45 Weeks

By Becky Lomaka, MA, CT Director of Grief Support and Education O’Connor Mortuary I was driving to work one chilly February morning and the radio talk show host mentioned that there were only 45 weeks left in the year. The number struck me; we had just begun the new year yet 45 weeks seemed so short to me when I heard it.

t’s amazing how mindset changes our perspective on things. If the radio announcer had said there are 315 days left in the year, I would have continued my drive into the office and never given it another thought. 45 weeks! What would I change? How differently would I live my life if I knew I had only 45 weeks left? I like to believe that I would live more freely, more in the moment. I hope I’d be better at focusing on the here and now rather than worrying so much about the future holds for me. Over this past year COVID-19 has stolen so many moments, stolen our ability to be together, stolen our ability to be close to those we love. So many people are struggling with too many losses, struggling to make decisions, struggling to process so much that has been taken away from us. Through it all we’ve carried on and done what we can to alleviate the suffering. Yet, our resilience has come at a high price. Have we wished an entire year of our lives away? Have we lost 45 weeks? Have we sat im6

patiently waiting for our happiness to return yet ultimately sacrificing our wellbeing? Martin Seligman, a leading authority in the field of Positive Psychology, makes an important distinction between happiness and wellbeing. He says that those who live with the ideal of a happiness principle focus just on increasing happiness (satisfaction) while eliminating things that detract from it. He suggests, in a world filled with things we cannot control that may decrease happiness and satisfaction, that it is crucial that we look to our wellbeing. This is about our relationship with our thoughts and feelings. A sense of wellbeing, he says, is not just about having positive emotion. Rather, he says it is about a life that also includes engagement, relationships, meaning, purpose, and accomplishment. These things will not always be easy or bring us a sense of happiness. There will be moments of devastation and despair. But a strong sense of wellbeing will allow us to sit

with those emotions and have confidence that they are not a failure, but a part of life; they are storms we will weather, with faith in our ability to survive. Did we spend the last year searching for happiness in the midst of despair rather than focusing on our wellbeing despite it? 45 weeks gave me a better perspective on what is really important; engagement, relationships, meaning and purpose. It’s helped me realize that it’s time to focus less on what I should do and focus more on what I really want to do with the time I have. Thinking about death teaches us that life is a gift, a gift we need to give ourselves.

How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs. 8

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW 1. Everyone needs to perform a self-skin exam once a month.

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer.

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine. 9

How We’re Making Pharmacy Better

f you’ve ever been to a big-box pharmacy like Walgreens or CVS, you’re familiar with the all the normal frustrations. Long wait times, not having your prescription ready when promised, or service that makes you feel like a number instead of a valued customer.

in the clinic is one of our pharmacy kiosks. You can walk over to it, press the green start button, and someone from our staff comes on and greets you, just as if you were being greeted at any of the big box stores,” said Nina Hosseini, Pharmacist-in-Charge at the SpotRx Laguna Hills Pharmacy.

SpotRx is out to change that. In our mind, our kiosk (an innovative technology that dispenses your meds after you feed in your prescription) is a huge part of creating a pharmacy experience that people can actually enjoy.

If that sounds faster and easier than your typical pharmacy, that’s because it is.

“It’s fast, convenient, and easy. As you come out of the doctor’s office, 10

“We provide the same interaction, just much more quickly. Plus, you didn’t have to drive somewhere else, walk to the back of the big box store and stand in line, meaning no additional exposure”, says Hosseini.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still happening globally, it’s more important than ever to use a pharmacy that reduces your trips and exposure, which is all a part of staying healthy. If you’re concerned about this different, more technologically advanced form of pharmacy, rest assured: it’s a lot like the old pharmacy experience, only better! “Once you hit that start button, our team will greet you and figure out how we can help you. And if you’ve never been at the kiosk before, we’re walk you through the information that any pharmacy needs (medical history, allergies, address, phone number, insurance information), and then begin to process your prescription,” says Hosseini. One of the best parts about SpotRx is that it can function as a one-stopshop for all your pharmacy needs as well.

“We work with your doctor to make sure YOUR prescription is in the kiosk in the right amounts, process it through your insurance and collect payment at the machine. Just like at any other location, you get to talk to your pharmacist to get one-on-one counseling about your medication—it’s just done more quickly than going to a big box store,” Hosseini says.

SpotRx is also making it easier for your doctor as well. “Because our concern is taking care of the patients, it’s also benefiting your doctor. They are also concerned about you taking your medication, picking it up, or starting it. If for some reason you aren’t feeling well enough to stand in line, we’ve seen that patients are more likely apt to come to us because of the convenience,” says Hosseini.

There is Reason to Be Hopeful About Cancer Breakthroughs in 2021 BY EDWARD KIM, M.D., M.B.A., PHYSICIAN-IN-CHIEF, CITY OF HOPE ORANGE COUNTY

A recent report from the American Cancer Society finds that death rates from cancer have dropped by the biggest singleyear decline on record—encouraging news for us all. But one cancer death is one too many and we must keep pushing for breakthroughs.

ccording to the report, U.S. cancer deaths have dropped by 31 percent since 1991. The death rate from cancer in the U.S. dropped 2.4 percent from 2017 to 2018, a record-setting decline. More effective cancer treatments have helped push this notable trend, 12

particularly in lung cancer. Yet, while mortality from lung cancer—the most lethal form of cancer in the U.S.—is down, other forms have not declined as much. Prostate, breast, and colorectal cancers have not had the steady drops we hoped to see. In fact, breast cancer rates in Orange

County are still on the rise. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the country. How to go from good news to great? I’m betting on City of Hope to lead the way. Here’s why I accepted the role of physician-in-chief for City of Hope Orange County and why I believe this century-old esteemed institution can change the cancer outlook. • City of Hope is a nationally recognized cancer specialty hospital. It’s an institution powered

tion. Synthetic human insulin and numerous breakthrough cancer drugs were developed through technology pioneered by City of Hope. Today we are one of the few cancer centers globally with the ability to produce cellular, genetic and drug-based therapies to good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards for patients. In practical terms, that means we move discoveries from the lab to patients at breakthrough speed. • We improve upon today’s treatments and push to break new ground. While many of our patients receive well-known treatments such as chemotherapy, we fine-tune and improve these practices. For example, our scientists developed a precision medicine tool that bases chemotherapy not on demographic data but on the patient’s genetics to determine their tolerance. Similarly, City of Hope is advancing precision medicine such as CAR-T therapy that uses the patient’s own genetics to fight cancer—that means fewer side effects because treatment is 100 percent specific to the individual. by more than 1,000 highly specialized clinicians and scientists committed to providing safe and expert cancer care. This collective knowledge and dedication is the engine that pushes for improved treatment and cancer cures. It is estimated that 100 million people each year benefit from City of Hope discoveries. • Pioneering work starts here. City of Hope’s relentless pursuit of medical breakthroughs puts us at the birth of the biotech revolu-

• Although we focus on cancer, our influence is profound. Because our specialists have vast experience studying the human body, our work often branches into other endeavors, including current research on COHO451, a COVID-19 vaccine. City of Hope scientists focus on stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies that block the virus from entering cells and induce T-cell growth, which has the potential for long term protection against future outbreaks. This promising work was

conceived and developed in our labs and is being produced for clinical use at one of our clinicalgrade manufacturing facilities. • We redefine health care delivery. City of Hope’s expansion into Orange County will put these extraordinary capabilities squarely in the community it serves. This bold departure from the traditional academic setting means greater access to discoveries for those who need them today. Our first location in Newport Beach is the beginning of a county-wide network of cancer care and a cancer campus of the future in Irvine. I describe these capabilities because I believe that they have the power to profoundly change the way we treat and eventually eradicate cancer— and that’s good news for all of us.

Tips For Filing Your 2020 Individual & Business Tax Returns B ased upon recent tax & Covid law changes, I can’t think of a more important time to have your tax returns prepared professionally by a CPA. It is critical that you remove the guesswork when you prepare your tax returns. I am ready to help you review your unique situation to determine if any of the following tax planning ideas should be implemented.

INDIVIDUALS 1. Economic Impact Payments and Unemployment Benefits must be Reported. st nd If you didn’t receive the 1 or 2 round of stimulus payments, filing your tax return will get you these dollars in the form of a credit if you qualify. 2. IRA/Pension Plan withdrawals during 2020 up to $100k can take advantage of special tax provisions if the taxpayer was impacted by Covid. The taxpayer can spread the taxation over 3 years or avoid taxable income by repaying all or part of the distribution within 3 years. Withdrawals made before you are 59.5 years are penalty free. 3. Taxpayers age 70.5 or older can contribute to charities up to $100,000 directly out of their IRA. This reduces AGI and most likely will lower your tax bill. This is a huge tax savings if you are taking the Standard Deduction and no longer claiming charitable deductions. 4. If you had or will have a large capital gain, consider investing in a “Qualified Opportunity Zone” within 180 days of sale or exchange to defer and partially eliminate the initial capital gain in addition to having the potential of

eliminating taxation on appreciation on the new investment property. 5. California tax laws have little conformity to the new Federal tax laws. Due to the differences in Federal and California law, it is quite possible that you will take the Standard Deduction on your Federal Return and Itemize for your California Return. Note: If you are taking the Standard Deduction on your Federal return, you can claim an above the line deduction up to $300 for cash charity contributions for 2020. 6. Taxpayers can change the tax treatment on their IRA contributions as late as the extension deadline for determining if their timely contribution will be treated as Pre-Tax (Traditional), After-Tax (Roth IRA or Non-Deductible IRA). This is important to review prior to finalizing your returns. BUSINESSES 1. Taxpayers can still apply for the PPP Loan Program (1st Round) if they missed the first opportunity or

apply for a Supplemental (1st round) Loan if forgiveness has not been granted to report recent favorable tax law changes. Taxpayers can apply for another PPP Loan (2nd Round) if their income dropped 25% or more when comparing quarterly gross revenues between comparable 2019/2020 quarters (see rules). Forgiven PPP Loan and EIDL Grant amounts are NOT Federal taxable income and do Not impact the deductibility of applicable expenses. EIDL Grants do NOT reduce your PPP Loan Forgiveness. CA has NOT adopted similar tax treatments. Unless CA changes their mind, CA EIDL Grants are taxable income and PPP Loan expenses that were used for forgiveness must be reduced as lost deductions. Employer Paid Sick & Family Leave-Credits (Form 7202) can be claimed for eligible employers, including the self-employed sole proprietor. See www.irs.gov for Form 7202 instructions. Eligible Employers can qualify for the 40% Employee Retention Credit, even if they received PPP loan proceeds. Wages not used for PPP loan forgiveness can be used to calculate the credit. Section 199A: Taxpayers may deduct up to 20% of their domestic “Qualified Business Income (QBI)”. QBI includes income from S corporations, Partnerships, LLCs taxed as S corporations or partnerships, Schedule C businesses, Schedule F farming activities and self-employment income reported as other income. It is extremely important that you classify your business with an accurate Principal Business Code since this will be a determinant if you qualify for QBI deduction at certain income levels. Review to see if a 401k, SEP-IRA or Defined Benefit Plan is the most beneficial plan for saving pre or after tax. Plans and contributions can now be established/paid for Tax Year 2020 as late as the extended due date for your return in 2021. Important to review your Meals and Entertainment expenses in detail. For Federal purposes, Entertainment is no longer deductible (tickets and entertainment events). Business Meals, Travel Meals and Staff Meals for the Benefit of the Employer, are deductible at 50%. For California tax purposes, Entertainment expenses and Meals per above are deductible at 50%. Therefore, be sure to deduct Entertainment expense on your California return.

Treating the Whole Patient at La Paz Dentistry By Jody Robinson

lifetime of healthy smiles starts with regular preventive dental care. A necessity made all the more enjoyable by utilizing the services of seasoned professionals like Drs. Tanaka and Yang of La Paz Dentistry in Laguna Hills. They and their team pride themselves on offering the highest quality clinical expertise and personalized service in a warm, compassionate atmosphere. The core philosophy is simple: “a healthy body starts with a healthy mouth.” In fact, a disease-free mouth can drastically improve the quality of an individual’s health, and Dr. Yang sees it as his lifelong mission to educate patients on the connection. “It’s my duty as a healthcare provider.” A graduate from the University of California, Los Angeles Dental School, Dr. Tanaka used his hours of service and continuing education to build a dream team at La Paz. “We have educators, support staff, and cheerleaders here, not just dentists or dental hygienists,” he says. “We’re a family, and we’re here to ensure that you understand what pinnacle oral care looks like.” Reviewing the practice’s scope of services, it looks a lot like combining pre16

ventative care with general dentistry. Visiting the dentist every six months ensures each patient has the chance to talk with your doctor, and address any nagging questions you might have about your oral healthcare plan. Checking in on your teeth and gums for signs of decay, cavities, or difficult-to-see issues you might not be able to feel comes next. A thorough cleaning, rinse, and polish are the last up, performed with the utmost care and respect for your beautiful smile. Experts in all aspects of the field, Drs. Yang and Tanaka pride themselves on the intensely comfortable environment they’ve built, paired with the most modern and state-of-the-art equipment on the market. “Continuous training is the only way to perfect our skills, and our training is our number one responsibility.” Restorative and cosmetic dentistry, periodontal dentistry, oral surgery, endodontics, and Invisalign round out their impressive list of offerings. Crowns, bonding, fillings. Extraction, veneers, orthodontics. Each boast of a robust healthcare practice. “But what really sets us apart is the pride we take with each interaction between doctor, staff, and patient,” says Dr. Yang. “Treating each individual and forming long lasting relationships are

the most important part of our day.” Building trust with those you care for takes time, and delivering results for those who trust in your work is the chief outcome. Especially in a place where the attached stigma is so entrenched. “In dentistry, you get to treat the patient’s health, confidence, and fears every day. We have to use our whole mind and all our skills to come up with the most creative, cost-effective, and painless manner possible.”

DEAN TANAKA, DDS UCLA Dental School Graduate

Temple University Dental School Graduate

And beyond the office walls? Drs. Tanaka and Yang aren’t shy about taking their skills on the road. “Volunteering at organized special needs clinics or seeing impacted individuals directly are a vital to the overall success of our business. Caring for those who have the least, means the most in return.” One of the most recent endeavors was with a group supporting abused women, and ensuring pinnacle dental hygiene is a step on the road to total health. First, you pick the right toothpaste, then you change the way people take care of their mouths.

Making the Right Connections with

Steve Carter Electric By Jody Robinson

The average American household has 45 lights in it. Cup lighting, recessed, portraiture; indoor, outdoor. Incandescent, CFL, LED. There are likely as many types of fixtures and functions in the residential electrical world as years Steve Carter Electric has been in business. we experienced the benefits for ourselves while visiting family friends in Northern California. With 10 minutes of turning the whole house fan on, all of the warm air had been evacuated from the home, replaced with the cooler ambient air from outside - dropping the temperature in the house by 10 degrees! He was sold. In researching local companies, we came across the Yelp 5-Star rated San Clemente-based family-owned Steve Carter Electric. We couldn’t be happier with the QuietCool whole house fan we had installed - and equally importantly, the service provided by Steve and his team of professionals and are now all set to make quick work of the warm air during our next “hot” spell.

staple in south Orange County for the last thirty years, it isn’t hard to imagine why someone might call in the professionals at Steve Carter Electric for help wiring and all things electrical. Dedicated to providing the best quality on every job, and investing in long-term service is the backbone of the business, and what Steve Carter himself carries into every job. “We know that your home is more than a tangle of wires: its not the fixtures, its the connections made inside and out.” Specializing in whole house fans, lighting and electrical upgrades, repairs, back-up power, panel upgrades, landscape lighting, E.V charger installs and general 20

troubleshooting, there isn’t a job too complex to take on. One of the perks of publishing South County Magazine is being able to give testimonials for local businesses that our family has personally utilized. As a San Juan Capistrano resident blessed to live in coastal OC, I realize it’s ridiculous to refer to the unseasonable warm weather we experienced in September and October as uncomfortably “hot.” But warm air rises and our bedrooms are upstairs where the temperature would get to the mid-80s, which would make it a little warmer than we’d like when trying to get to sleep at night. My husband had been hankering to have a whole house fan installed after

“I knew back in high school that I wanted to learn the trade and become an electrician,” says Steve. “My Dad taught me to take pride in my workmanship, and I’ve carried that through until today. We don’t cut corners because we’d like to be your electricians for life.”

Action Duct

CLEANING COMPANY Helping Orange County Breathe Better Since 1978 By Jody Robinson

The space between custom and conventional is vast. Between thorough and cursory. Committed and inconsistent. Jim Jerling, owner of Action Duct Cleaning of Orange County has been around long enough to know that space well.

pecializing in commercial and residential duct cleaning services (including duct and vent cleaning, kitchen exhaust cleaning, HVAC cleaning and pressure washing), Jim is no stranger to hard work, or to the inherent need for clean business practices in a dirty industry. Handling the most challenging, demanding jobs with alacrity isn’t easy. But it’s become second nature for Jim and his team, and he’ll be the first to tell you why. “I wish I had an inspiring story about how I got into the industry. But I think the necessity of having this job just to pay the bills at first really clarified my mission,” he says. "Knowing what it was that I needed, and having no illusions about the work let me see what was best for our clients.” When it comes to serving industrial, commercial and residential clients’ duct cleaning needs, halfway isn’t good enough. Jim and his team pride themselves on being meticulous about the details, and providing the utmost in customer service. Offering fair prices is just the start. Offering peace of mind is the real goal. As members of the National Air Duct Cleaning Association (NADCA), Jim and his knowledgable team of service providers follow the “highest-level of industry practices. Our NADCA Air Systems Cleaning Specialist certification means we abide by the most 24

stringent standards and operate under a strict code of ethics.” As an essential business, Action Duct Cleaning is open and fully operational during this global pandemic - on the front lines to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses by sanitizing residential communities, schools, hospitals, manufacturing and commercial facilities, restaurants, hotels, gyms and more. “Everything went so smoothly working with Action Duct for the HVAC cleaning of our Laguna Hills store,”says Tamar M., facilities coordinator for Road Runner Sports. "They were very responsive, their quote was half the price of the other quote we received, and they made it as convenient as possible for us so it wouldn’t impact our business during store hours ...I would definitely use Action Duct again.”

Owners Jim and Tracie Jerling

Residential customer David C. agrees with Tamar’s assessment and adds “one of our family members having some asthma/allergy issues. So we wanted to try and make our home environment as pristine as possible. I contacted several air duct cleaners. Then we saw a documentary that said you should only work with those that are certified by the NADCA. That is where we found Action Duct Cleaning. That, plus the positive BBB, Yelp and Angie List ratings…” Company values play a huge role in executing a clean business plan. Action Duct believes their work improves the quality of life around each client, has an immeasurable passion to do better, a commitment to honesty, and a penchant for remarkable service and selfless teamwork. For Jim, “decades of experience and a remarkable safety record, was the least I could give my clients, and to repay my own leaders who taught me everything I know about duct cleaning.” Clean or not clean. Washed or unwashed. There isn’t a middle ground to greatness, and Jim and his team of tenured and conscientious technicians are taking action on your behalf every step of the way. A Royal Escape at The Lodge at Torrey Pines By Jody Robinson

he most recent season of Netflix’s revolutionary bio-drama The Crown follows Britain’s royal family to the Queen’s Scottish estate house, Balmoral. Views of verdant, rolling hills, and moody, dark skies await its guests. As a fan of the show and an avid traveler, I’d been dreaming about a family getaway. I couldn’t have been more excited when my husband and I planned a weekend retreat to La Jolla’s atmospheric the Lodge at Torrey Pines. I’d only seen photos of the sprawling expanse, and on the drive in felt utterly transported - just to the north of the property the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve showcases 1,750 sprawling acres of unspoiled land that protects its namesake - one of America’s rarest pine trees. By the time we pulled in under the Lodge’s porte-cochere and were greeted by doormen attired in traditional Scottish kilted dress, we knew we were in for an experience unlike any other. 36

With warmer, Craftsman detailing than you might find at the Queen’s residence, the AAA 5 Diamond rated resort boasts expansive public rooms with fireplaces, marble mantles, leather chairs, and unbeatable views of the Torrey Pines Golf Course. Beyond, you’ll find you’re looking at the Pacific, not the cool Atlantic - but to be honest, I knew I’d be hardpressed to be pulled away from the

cozy poolside cabana. The heated pool, especially during California’s winter months, was just what we all needed to unwind and relax. Understandably, travel looks decidedly different these days and as a family with two middle-school aged children, safety is a top priority. Transparent in its commitment to ensure the well-being of resort guests, The

Lodge’s Clean & Care Commitment protocols have earned the property a Clean + Safe Certification from the California Hotel & Lodging Association (see website for details).

ACCOMMODATION + AMENITIES It’s easy to see why Sunset Magazine rated The Lodge as the #1 Hotel in the West and described it as “one of the most beautiful hotels anywhere.” Our stunning guest accommodation featured the most luxurious Egyptian cotton linens, gorgeous oversized soaking bath, a cozy fireplace, spacious living quarters and breathtaking views of the world-renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course overlooking the California coastline.

yards with a par of 72. The North Course is 7,258 yards in length with a par of 72. The Lodge features a full-service spa and state-of-the-art fitness center. Although these may be closed due to state guidelines at the time of your visit, there’s no shortage of open-air recreational opportunities - from outdoor yoga and croquet to golf, guided hikes and of course, the gorgeous heated pool.

The Lodge’s signature restaurant, A.R. Valentien, highlights seasonal cuisine crafted from locally sourced ingredients - delicious dishes we enjoyed “outdoors” in an elegant, open air, timbered dining room. The metal-strap post-and-beam structure, hand-crafted wood framed windows and stained-glass lanterns all a nod to its Southern California heritage and Craftsman architecture and further enhanced by the panoramic views overlooking the 18th hole of the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

We chatted with a couple who raved about the 36-hole facility owned by the City of San Diego, originally designed by William F. Bell. The South Course was redesigned in 2001 by Rees Jones in preparation for the 2008 U.S. Open and is now 7,698

For starters, we sampled wonderfully fragrant and flavorful artisanal cheeses paired with spiced nuts and jam followed by a delectable crispy skin sablefish butternut squash tortellini, lobster consommé, pomegranate and preserved orange relish. During our stay, we also indulged in room service with wood-fired favorites (think chimney roasted chicken and wood-grilled tri-tip). My daughter and I are completely addicted to the charcoal bread avocado toast topped with smashed avocado, fennel, pickled and fresh vegetables, watercress and Everything seasoning and the wood roasted vegetable quinoa (our attempts to replicate the recipes at home came up a little short so she’s already angling for a return trip). My son would eat the Grill’s “Drugstore Hamburger” at every meal if you let him and my strictly meat-and-potatoes husband thoroughly enjoyed the cooked-to-perfection New York Strip paired with a glass of regional wine. An offshoot of the early 1900s Arts and Crafts Movement, the Lodge 38

boasts one of the loveliest examples of California Craftsman you can find. Clean lines, warm, open spaces, and naturally rough raw materials, like stone, wood, and plenty of natural light give beautiful complement to the deliberate and exceptional care the staff take to ensure each guest’s stay is comfortable and memorable. You’d think we were titled guests of the estate with the unprecedented service we received. The best part?

You don’t have to claim a royal lineage to stay.

The Proof is in the Paint with

Photography of Jeff McCabe by Lana Farfan, Caught in the Moment Photography

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

ut unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting. In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.” Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most professional crews in the business also goes a long way. “Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand

up in defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since. In 2009, Jeff took the pair of three-man crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.” To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household

name, for its quality of work and quality of values. My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on

time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left. “We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”

Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations BEFORE - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting). We were so pleased with the work that when we decided to update AFTER our kitchen by painting our cabinets and adding hardware (the job is scheduled to start two weeks from the date of this writing so look for a future testimonial feature), we were confident that One Way Painting would be the one and only call we would need to make.

Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia, windows. Main doors, garage doors, trim. Even wrought iron, or other specialty surfaces like patio covers and fences. Most work depends on the client’s preference: semi-gloss, hi-gloss enamel, acrylic, or oil finish. Inside walls see flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi, or hi-gloss. If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add. “I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn’t fly in Emerson’s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

Pets of the Month One year old Newman is a fun-loving guy with lots of energy. He loves to run and play and would likely make a great jogging or hiking buddy. With liveliness to spare, Newman also probably wouldn’t mind having a similarly active dog as a playmate. He would do best in an active home with experienced adopters who can continue with his training.

Seven year old Arthur is just about as sweet as they come. He is very sociable and loves to hang out in your lap. He also seems to get along well with other small dogs. Arthur doesn’t like to be left alone for long periods of time but would be wonderful for someone who wants a constant companion.

Lindsey is a playful kitten who loves attention. She happily runs right over to greet you when you enter the room. Left to her own devices, Lindsey occupies her time by hunting down toys or a napping peacefully in the sun. Lindsey gets along with other cats, but can be a bit of a diva and would prefer not having to share.

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services By Ann Laurence

y grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.” Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe. 48

My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.” Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsi-

bility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.” San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.” As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant. “Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws. “Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

AMMUNITION AUDIT To connect with Jeff directly, call (714) 639-9608 or for more information, visit CaliforniaGunServices.com.

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home. 49

Pacific Paradise Pools Creating Outdoor Living that Complement Your Family’s Lifestyle & Home’s Personality By Jody Robinson

f you’re anything like the rest of us, you may have spent an unexpectedly large amount of time at home this year. Maybe you even spent time in your backyard dreaming up new ideas for your space. And if you’ve ever considered building a swimming pool, now might be a great time to take the plunge! Let’s talk about reasons to install a new pool or update a tired and outdated backyard. I don’t just mean how incredible swimming pools are for increas50

ing the value of your home or in the case of updating your pool, for energy and cost savings … I’m talking about a certain kind of admiration from your kids, grandkids and loved ones. I’m talking about a vanity-free, personalized outdoor entertainment space everyone will enjoy. Think of the unlimited possibilities – all because you make the decision to turn your own backyard into the kind of relaxing resort that you may have only dreamed of. The fantasy is easy enough - but where do you begin? How do you know where to start?

ries for a lifetime all while staying at home,” says Rich. “I am very proud that we have been able to continue to provide safe and serene spaces for homeowners in the midst of a year that brought many new challenges. I also feel tremendously lucky that we have some of the most professional, talented, experienced and polite staff in the pool and spa industry.”

They’re not the bragging type, but the truth is this Huntington Beach-founded business is an award - winning company and has been honored on numerous occasions from industry associations and a variety of professional trade platforms. Pacific Paradise Pools won one of only four Pinnacle Awards from Luxury Pools and many other industry awards from their peers for design excellence.

Our mission is to help homeowners enjoy their pools, maximize their fun and create memories for a lifetime, while staying at home."

If you’ve got an existing swimming pool that has been neglected as much as our beach bodies seem to get, don’t worry, they also do major pool and spa renovations. Rich and the Pacific Paradise Pools Team strive very hard to go above and beyond to ensure their customers are satisfied at every turn. They have an in-house staff of designers and work with Interior Designers, Landscape Architects and other Trade Professionals to ensure you get the full HGTV effect. “We aim to please and make sure that we develop an outdoor living space that will complement your family’s lifestyle and home’s personality as well as provide years of out-

While they appreciate the accolades and feel the awards “validate our hard work and business strategy,” their team is even more grateful for “the referrals from loyal, happy customers that truly prove our clients endorse what we do.” The fact of the matter is, these projects don’t just provide you with beautiful backyard entertainment, they give you endless relaxing weekends and evenings after a long day at the office or after the kids and grandkids sports games. Rich and their team may not be there to serve you drinks poolside, but then again, with their 5-star customer service, maybe you just need to ask (although, rumor has it they help you

That’s where Rich Tonti, owner and founder of Pacific Paradise Pools, comes in. He’s been transforming people’s lives and backyards for over 35 years, right here in Orange County. His team does every pool style: cleanlines mid-century, formal elegant designs, tropical rockscapes and any other at-home resort. It almost makes you want to charge admission for your own family and friends to take a dip. “Our mission is to help homeowners enjoy their pools, maximize their fun in their backyard and create memo51

Pacific Paradise Pools works its magic quickly, safely and efficiently when executing a project, just let their team know how they can help you during this exciting process. We’d hate to make him blush, but we’ve got to get the word out about what Rich does when he isn’t creating backyard memories for his clients. Currently he volunteers an average of 10 or more hours a week on projects and spends a couple weeks every year volunteering overseas. Since 1994, he has been a part of “Men and Women of Action,” a volunteer construction and disaster relief organization. Rich’s last project was in “The Bush,” outside Mozambique’s capitol city where his team partnered with locals to expand their community with small homes, school classrooms and an afterschool mentor and feeding program, which ministers to 350 kids, 5 days a week. “This gives life meaning, and couples my skills as a builder and my passion to assist those in need of a helping hand,” says Rich, who also often completes projects a little closer to home. These have included a multiple school building roof project in Fresno, a church hall in Bakersfield, a drywall project, in Simi Valley, for a senior citizen and a dozen homes in Tijuana, Mexico, with a Santa Ana based group named Corazon. There, the recipients of the homes are worthy candidates who have performed hundreds of hours of communi-

ty service and are nominated by their neighbors to receive, their first home, using funds generated through donations here in the states. “Raised right here in Huntington Beach and a graduate from HBHS, it’s always especially nice when we have the opportunity to give back in our own community as well.” Learn more about Men and Women of Action by visiting www.mwoa.ngo or Corazon at www.corazon.org

The Benefits of Diabetic Socks By Livia De Los Rios

he primary purpose of diabetic socks is to keep your feet dry, decrease your risk for foot injury and avoid preventing or slowing blood circulation. The difference between diabetic socks and regular cotton socks is that they are usually are made of materials that wick away moisture, are fitted, padded and are non-binding. Because people with diabetes are at higher risk of foot injuries and infection due to damage to their circulatory and nervous

systems caused by high blood sugar levels, they would benefit from wearing diabetic socks. Nerve damage, or neuropathy, decreases sensation and increases risk of injury, particularly on the bottom of the feet and can also cause people with diabetes to be unaware of an injury and delay treatment. Circulatory problems also make it harder for wounds to heal. For these reasons and more, proper foot care is critically important for people with diabetes and diabetic socks are designed with these specific issues in mind.

Award-Winning CBD for Pain Relief, Skin Conditioning and Sexual Pleasure

“Our need will be the real creator,” Plato famously wrote in his Socratic dialogue, Republic. In layman’s terms? Necessity is the mother of invention. Crystal Rae, Certified Clinical Herbalist and Co-owner of FEED CBD: living proof. A long-time sufferer of eczema, she began experimenting with homemade tinctures and balms early on. Finding her way into cannabis culture wasn’t a far reach, as the herb has well-known healing properties, like many other medicinal plants. Now, as a self-proclaimed “huge advocate” of skin-based education, Crystal combines medicinal herbs for maximum synergy and potency. After suffering from the side effects of cortisone creams and prednisone, Crystal took to infusing herbs and cannabis into olive oil and apply-

ing it to her skin. With great results. Transferring her success into crafting custom formula massage creams and other skin care products for her clients from plants she grew and harvested herself, Crystal found herself on the path to becoming a Certified Clinical Herbalist. A couple winning turns in the Emerald’s Cup Topical category later, she and a business partner began Feed CBD. “Your skin is incredibly important to total body health,” she says. “What goes on, goes in.” Since your skin clocks in at the largest organ in the human body, Crystal will be the first to tell you that your hair and body products should bolster your endocannabinoid system. “That’s why we call our brand FeedCBD: our products feed your skin.” Follow

Using only culinary grade ingredients, Feed’s core philosophy leads them to crafting safe, sustainable, organic, non-toxic creams that “cause no harm to people or the planet. We use old-world alchemy methods, and unrefined, organic plant oils to harness the healing power of medicinal herbs. Transforming CBD hemp flowers into 4 different extracts is no small feat, but it is our pleasure to combine them into healing remedies for your body and soul.” For pain, for your skin, or for your sexual pleasure, Feed’s products stimulate blood flow, soothe pain, take care of swelling, help to repair damaged skin, heal cracks, rashes, and even cold sores. Immortelle, Tumescence, Vitality, Radiance, Euphoria. Feed calls it like it is: and more, like it should be.

Bare Bunny Aesthetics Baring Your Best Self at Surf’s City’s Premier Wellness Spa

By Alysse Valiante

The work and sacrifice that goes into being a mother is invaluable; but often when we look in the mirror the meter at which we measure falls short.

otherhood begins a journey that is unlike any other. From the tiny miracle of life that begins inside the womb, to the day they enter the world and cling in utter dependence; a woman endures and gives at every capacity. The physical and emotional changes that come along with the gestational months and years of raising babies, are both beautiful and challenging. As a mom of two littles under two, I look in the mirror and see a body that has birthed two babies. A body that now chases them around, carries them, teaches them, and invests in them. A body that craves the same care and attention that it gives out. 58

Did you know that more than 50 million Americans are affected by symptoms of bladder control? In fact, it is one of the most common health issues that women face. While many people may think that the condition only affects older wo men, the truth is that women of all ages may have symptoms related to incontinence (bladder leakage) or overactive bladder. These symptoms are much more than a nuisance! They are not only embarrassing, but can sig nificantly impact a woman’s life, and in some women can be debilitating. There is no need to suffer in silence as there are solutions! The first step is to identify the type of bladder problem you have. Here are some questions to consider: 1. Are you experiencing leakage with coughing, sneezing, lifting heavy items, exercising or even just walk ing? 2. Have you been avoiding sexual activity because you are afraid you might leak? 3. Are you having voiding symptoms such as urinary frequency, uncon trollable urges or nighttime void ing? Are you worried that you won’t make it to the bathroom in time? 4. Are these symptoms disrupting your life? 5. Have you sought treatment op tions or have you not because you fear that surgery is the only option? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, The Women’s Blad 60

Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

by Jody robinson

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.” Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them. “Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser. It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.” Thank you Betty!
