ATTENTION ALL MEDICARE ENROLLEES…….IMPORTANT TAX PLANNING NEEDED Being properly educated about Medicare is important …However, it is only part of planning to manage your healthcare costs.

T

he traditional approach is to focus on keeping your Medicare and out of pocket costs to a minimum. This approach, while important, overlooks probably the most important element which is tax planning to try to minimize your monthly Medicare Part B premium costs. This important step is never discussed and is overlooked by senior health agents who don’t have the training to deliver important tax savings. As you may know, you pay Medicare Part A and Part B premiums (which are typically deducted from your Social Security benefit check). The monthly premium cost can range from approximately $136 to $461 per month

based upon your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) which is your normal AGI plus any tax-exempt interest and other non-taxable income. At various income levels, the Medicare Part B premium costs are increased. Normally, premium costs will continue to rise since the government will adjust them for inflation. Your income number for tax year 2019 actually determines your Medicare Part B premium cost two years later for calendar year 2021. Prescott Tax & Wealth Management is offering a $99 tax planning session with Peter Prescott (CPA & Masters in Taxation) to the first 50 people who respond to this ad.

Peter will review your 2018 tax returns and estimate your 2019 income (MAGI) to assist with keeping your income below the annual income threshold levels in an effort to minimize your Medicare premium costs and tax bill.

Away at

College Redux

By Donald A. Hunsberger, Esq.

D

ecades ago we published a piece warning parents sending their kids to college for the first time to provide their children with more than what freshmen need to pack for their lives at school. Our article described materials the undergrads should leave at home with their parents, as well as take away to the university: every student who is over eighteen should (MUST), leave their parents with an Advance Health Care Directive, a Durable Power of Attorney for Property and Finances, and a very strongly drafted HIPAA form. We gave out reams of these articles to parents and students, but over time, for no particular reason, the distribution flow dried up. We stopped circulating the article, except to our own clients at the workplace whom we knew had children going off to school. Sadly, one fine young man of our acquaintance left to study on the East Coast, well equipped for his academics, but without any of the paperwork for his parents when he got sick. He went across the country, leaving his family in Orange without the tools to talk to doctors, hospitals, nurses, or any other health care provider when, as it tragically came to pass, he had a heart attack away from home. The result was too painful to fully relate. Just know that even after this wonderful fellow had passed on, his family was not able retrieve their son’s medical records to learn what precise10 October 2019

ly had taken their cherished child. Before he died, Mom and Dad could not discuss matters with the health care providers, who were simply following the law as provided by our Congress.

so. Access to medical information is worthless without the authority to tell the doctors what to do next.

We do not want this to ever happen again. Here is the paperwork you MUST have for your offspring before they go away for school, once they are eighteen:

DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR PROPERTY AND FINANCE: Gives you authority to talk and deal with your student’s bank, his dormitory, university, employer and other entities who can sometimes help in crisis situations.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act): a US law preventing your contact with health plans, doctors, hospitals and other health care providers without a HIPAA form. You CANNOT plan on talking to these people WITHOUT THE HIPAA FORM on file. If they do talk to you without a HIPAA authorization, they are putting themselves and their employer at risk

Each of these documents is indispensable. No parent should say goodbye without all of these forms on hand at home and in the files of the new scholar’s school. No exceptions to this rule: Keep originals of each in your files at home, and be sure that the school which he or she will be attending has copies on file so that they have been notified in advance of your preparations.

ADVANCE HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVE: While HIPAA forms allow you to talk to the Medical people, the Advance Health Care Directive gives you the authority to direct doctors and make decisions about the student’s care when your child is not able to do

Parents want college to be a time of learning and wonder. Nothing we have advised will detract from that experience; instead, proper planning will remove one worry from the lives of Mom and Dad as they send their future President off to the Ivy-covered halls.

“Aging-In”Gracefully

A Q & A with Stephanie Frisch, Insurance 101 Services Photography by Diana Schmitt, Accent Portraits by Diana

In the Medicare world there is a term used called “Aging-In.”

I

t means that somebody is turning 65 and transitioning their current health coverage to Medicare because that is the age when most people make that transition. That process of transitioning to Medicare can be routine or it can be very complex, or a combination of the two. Making a mistake during that initial enrollment period can cause financial, medical and stressful issues that no one wants to experience or deal with later.

come for you so when your time comes to “Age-In” you won’t need to worry about the consequences of making mistakes or uneducated decisions.

When dealing with your Medicare options, whether you’re new to Medicare or you have been on it for years, broker experience is everything. Everybody's situation is unique to them and the more individualized attention you get from the Medicare broker that you use, the better the out-

Q: Have you been helping people with their Medicare options for long?

12 2 October 2019

In the following interview, Stephanie Frisch (owner of the San Juan Capistrano-based Insurance 101 Services) addresses some frequently asked questions and recent trends in the industry.

A: I’ve been an insurance broker now for 14 years and specializing in Medicare options for 9 of those.

It’s interesting for me to think about when I first started helping people with Medicare, that process personally being a part of my life seemed so far in the future. Now, my husband Mitch is “Aging-In” to Medicare in just 6 months! We been discussing his options and he feels fortunate to have my experience and knowledge on his side as he makes his transition. Q: I know you specialize in helping those new to Medicare, but there are a lot of readers already on Medicare. What advice can you give them as the Medicare Annual Enrollment period begins this month? A: First off, keep an eye out for your “Annual Notice of Change.” You won’t receive this from your Medicare Supplement provider, because those benefits don’t change annually, but your Medicare Part D (RX) plans do, as well as Medicare Advantage plans if you’re enrolled in one of those instead of Medicare as your primary insurance. They get sent out the end of September to coincide with the start of the Annual Enrollment period (AEP) which begins October 1st. Any changes to your plan premium or benefits for the new year will be shown there, comparing your current year benefit with the upcoming year. If you decide to make any changes with these types of plans, you have between October 15th and December 7th to do so, with those changes taking effect on January 1st. Q: Isn’t AEP (Annual Enrollment Period) the same as OEP (Open Enrollment Period)? There seems to be some confusion over the two and whether they’re one in the same? A: Completely understandable because up until last year, pretty much everyone, myself included, used both terms to describe the period of time when Medicare beneficiaries could make changes to their coverage for the new year. But last year the government (who provides Medicare) decided to bring back an additional transition period that had been in place before, but it must have been a long time ago since I don’t remember it. So now, until further notice, only those Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can make a change to their current coverage during the Open Enrollment period which is January 1st through March 31st. Q: Why do you think Medicare brought back the Open Enrollment period? It seems the whole process of the Annual Enrollment period was confusing enough. A: Agreed! But I do always come across people who, even with all the TV ads and mailers, somehow missed their opportunity for change during AEP. So, I would imagine the government was getting some feedback on that. Q: You write an article for this publication every month to help Medicare beneficiaries understand their options and the processes involved with transitioning to Medicare and making changes to their current Medicare coverage.

My services are free, I get compensated by the insurance companies that I choose to contract with. I do make house calls to those unable to come to me, once again a free service. Because of that do a lot of people request an appointment with you throughout the year? A: Absolutely, many times people come in not only with a recent article that I wrote, but I’ve had clients come in with several articles, telling me they’ve been reading them in South County Magazine for years and now they’re turning 65 and looking to me to help them with the decisions they need to make. Over the years the number of people I help “Age-In” or transition from Group Health insurance if older than 65 to Medicare has grown considerably. I help about 200 people a year with this process. That exposure to so many varying situations is what gives me the experience to continue to grow my knowledge, especially with the very complex transition situations. Q: So, what do you feel most people are confused about when it comes to transitioning to Medicare? A: Surprisingly, for many it’s the first step of just activating their basic Medicare benefits with the government. Then it would be understanding what “IRMAA” is and how that can make an unexpected financial impact on them. Lastly, I would say how to go about transitioning to Medicare if they stayed on their large group health insurance plan past age 65. Q: Why would it be hard to activate Medicare, doesn’t that automatically happen at age 65? A: No, things have change since the increase in the age to be fully vested in social security benefits has increased. Now, the only people that just get to wait for the Medicare card in the mail about 3 months before their 65th birthday are those taking their Social Security benefits early. All the others turning 65 need to take steps to activate Medicare either online, over the phone or in person at their local Social Security office. Q: What is IRMAA and what does the acronym stand for? A: IRMAA stands for “Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount”. Especially here in Orange County we have a lot of higher wealth individuals. The government sets a benchmark of the AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) that a Medicare beneficiary can have to pay the standard Medicare Part B monthly premium. For an individual that’s currently $85K annually and $170K if married. There are 5 levels above the base premium; currently $135.50 a month. This is what “IRMAA” is referring to and it is based off of October 2019 13 3

Many people that meet with me had no idea that the options for Medicare Health plans were so rich in benefits and so low in premiums, or without a premium altogether! the AGI filed on their tax return 2 years earlier. If someone has IRMAA added to their Part B premium, they will also be assessed a monthly Part D IRMAA as well.

Q: So, I was under the impression that everyone has to go onto Medicare at age 65, why don’t some people have to? A: There is so much confusion on this. I’m told by many of my clients that dinner with friends turns into minor debates about whose right on this one. If someone has coverage by a group health insurance plan that is covering more than 20 or more employees, whether it’s their own employer or a spouse’s, they can choose to stay on that plan for as long as that person is employed by that company. If coverage ends, they need to transition to Medicare (Not COBRA, penalties will occur) quickly. Making a transition to Medicare from group coverage can also just occur whenever someone is ready to make the move. Many people that meet with me had no idea that the options for Medicare Health plans were so rich in benefits and so low in premiums, or without a premium altogether! Consequently, the benefits are much better than their group health insurance (nothing is lower than a $0 co-pay) and most times less for monthly premium as well. On the other hand, for those that make a high annual income, we have to look at the amount of IRMAA that would be incurred monthly vs. the monthly premium for their group coverage. Because of this factor, many times in this situation it makes sense to wait until their income reduces upon retirement to go onto Medicare. Q: So what should our readers know if they’d like to get in touch with you to set a time to meet with you or have a phone consultation? A: I have an office in San Juan Capistrano. Given today’s world of technology and online documents and web interface, it’s best to meet there by setting an appointment with me. My services are free, I get compensated by the insurance companies that I choose to contract with. I do make house calls to those unable to come to me, once again a free service. Many times it’s a good idea to set a time to talk in more detail about the current situation to see if it makes sense to set an appointment with me, or if the issues can be resolved or questions can be answered over the phone. This is my “very busy” season since the Annual Enrollment period is now upon us, so it’s best to call or email me to schedule a time sooner than later. My email is InsuranceEducation@att.net and my dedicated work cell number is 949-351-2443. 14 4 October 2019

Where’s the Party? By Jody Robinson

There are extroverts and introverts. There are loud personalities and reserved ones. Those who love dinner in with a few friends, or a real lollapalooza with everyone they know. The common ground between both types?

B

oth like a good party, no matter the size or shape. “At the center of all good gatherings is the sense of celebration,” notes Candy Hirte, owner of Costa Mesa’s Where’s The Party? store. Candy knows her way around a celebration. In business since 1990, she and a cadre of incredible ladies have been making every occasion special for their customers with everything from invites to home decor. “Customer service comes first, but that’s pretty simple when we all love the

idea of celebrating every holiday.” Nowadays the competition is building online, but even with expedited shipping, nothing really helps set the tone of a party like talking through a theme or decor details with an expert. “Each one of the wonderful women (there are 17 of them!) who work here can walk you through the process and share our etiquette gleaned from 29 years in business.” Paper goods, balloons, and home decor weren’t Candy’s original business plan. “I kind of stumbled into

the party,” she notes with a chuckle. “I met a darling girl at a class I was taking and she said she was interested in opening up a party store in Orange County! I jumped in with both feet, not knowing a darn thing about this business. Well, except that I do lo-ve parties.” Quickly growing to love chatting with each and every customer who walked in the doors, Candy soon realized that on a very personal level, the business was about the personal friendships she was developing, and the small and large moments that made up each

I could honestly spend hours wandering around the store looking at all the amazing hostess gifts, home decor and unique presents for weddings, baby showers, holidays and all of life’s other occasions. I’m already envisioning retro party ideas (think 80s, western, disco, Roaring 20s or other era-themed events where only a paper invitation will do).

Candy and her husband love their community, and often take the time to go out with their friends and family. “Obviously we love movies or relaxing with a good book, but giving back to those who surround us is so important to us. How Can I Tell If I Have Skin Cancer? By Kristy Fleming, MD

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Because each has many different appearances, it is important to know the early warning signs.

L

ook especially for change of any kind. Do not ignore a suspicious spot simply because it does not hurt. Skin cancers may be painless, but dangerous all the same. If you notice one or more of the warning signs, see a board-certified dermatologist right away, preferably one who specializes in diseases of the skin.

ACTINIC KERATOSIS

An actinic keratosis (AK) is a crusty, scaly growth caused by damage from exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. An AK is considered a precancer because if left alone, it could develop into a skin cancer. AKs are the product of a lifetime accumulation of UV damage and typically appear on areas most commonly exposed sun, such as the backs of the hands, forearms, face, neck, and scalp.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells arising in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. SCCs often look like scaly red patches, crusty bumps, warts, or elevated growths with a central depression. SCCs may appear suddenly and some forms are tender to touch. They can become disfiguring and sometimes deadly if allowed to grow. More than 1 million cases of SCC are diagnosed each year in the U.S., which translates to about 115 cases diagnosed every hour. Incidence has increased by 200 percent in the past three decades in the U.S., and more than 15,000 Americans die each year from this type of skin cancer. 22 October 2019

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequently occurring form of all cancers, with more than 4 million cases of diagnosed in the U.S. each year. BCCs may look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, or scars. Any skin lesion that doesn’t heal, or bleeds with even gentle trauma, such as drying with a towel, is concerning for a BCC.

MELANOMA

Melanoma is a very dangerous form of skin cancer. Melanoma is caused mainly by intense, occasional UV exposure (frequently leading to sunburn), especially in those who are genetically predisposed to the disease. An estimated 178,560 cases of melanoma are diagnosed in the U.S. each year and is fatal for an estimated 9,320 of these patients. Fortunately, if melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable.

WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

1. Everyone needs to perform a selfskin exam once a month. 2. Melanoma can appear anywhere on the skin, including the palms/soles, under your nails, and places...for most, have never seen the light of day (genitalia). For this reason, it is important to look everywhere. Lock the bathroom door, get out a hand mirror, and check, it could save your life. 3. What to look for: ABCDEs, and an ugly duckling A - Asymmetry: If I draw a line down the middle, do the sides match? B - Border: Is there a nice crisp border, or does the mole melt into the surrounding skin? C - Color: Moles should be one color, one shade of brown. Is there a variety of shades or additional colors, such as black, red, white, or blue? D - Diameter: Any mole larger than 6mm, ie the head of a pencil eraser, has a higher risk of becoming melanoma. E - Evolution: Has it changed? F - The Ugly Duckling Sign: Most people have a “signature mole,” their own personal mole appearance and architecture. Is there a mole that seems different from all the others? 4. Everyone needs a full body skin exam by a board-certified dermatologist once a year, more frequently if you have a family history of skin cancer, a personal history of skin cancer, or live in an area with substantial sunshine.

Meditation Does a Body Good!

By the Align Pilates Team

In the medical and science field, research is finding the act of meditating contains a multitude of health benefits. These studies are discovering that the many forms of meditation drastically offset the effects of stress and aging at a cellular level.

to be sitting in an awkward lotus position to start soaking in the positive vibes. There are many different forms of mediation backed by doctors and scientists like “Mindful Meditation” and “Transcendental Meditation.” These same doctors and scientists also recognize “mindful” movement like tai chi, Pilates, and yoga as a form of meditation. In the end, all types of meditation result in taking us beyond the noisy chatter of the mind into a place of stillness and silence. Meditation is where the brain and the body can connect, and begin to restore the body to create a better quality of life. Here are 3 simple ways to start meditating today... 1. Start the Day Slowly - Before jumping out of bed to frantically get on with your busy life, just a take a few minutes to calmly say or write 3 positive things that are happening in your life. Let this positivity guide you through the rest of your day. 2. Breathe! - At any point in the day just pause and notice how you are breathing. Focus on how your body reacts to inhaling and exhaling. Then go beyond noticing and start to breathe bigger. Take a full inhale, pause, then exhale all the air out and repeat this for a minute or so. Notice the difference and go on with your day.

S

o much so that some doctors and scientist are proclaiming meditation could be the future of medicine. For example, a study published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, looked at 201 people with coronary heart disease. And asked them to either take a health education class promoting better diet and exercise, or one on Transcendental Meditation. Researchers followed up with participants for the next five years and found that those who took the medi24 October 2019

tation class had a 48 percent reduction in their overall risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. Many more studies like these are being conducted and continue to prove the benefits of meditation. The best part is that mediation is easy! Anyone can do it. Any preconceived ideas about meditation should be forgotten. Meditation is a practice that helps us take a break from the hectic pace of everyday life. It doesn’t require a specific spiritual belief, even a few minutes of meditation helps, and you don’t even have

3. Join a Class - Find a studio that offers meditation classes. An instructor will be able to help you learn techniques in meditation. Plus, you are dedicating time to learn the practice. The more you do it, the easier, and healthier you will be. So come and combat aging, release stress and meditate with us at Align Pilates and Yoga Center. Align Pilates is located at 31896 Plaza Drive, Suite E6 in San Juan Capistrano. For info, call (949) 481-3577 or visit AlignPilatesCenter.com

Loaded Inheritance: Safe Gun Storage, Ownership and Disposal with California Gun Services By Ann Laurence

M

y grandparents owned a beautiful three bedroom casita in Solana Beach. Just up the road from the train station, their home was built in the twenties, and renovated completely when I was in high school. When my grandfather passed away, I moved in with my grandma, doing chores around the house for her and helping to maintain the garden. One day, I was looking for my grandfather’s whetstone, to sharpen an old pair of shears, and I stumbled across his Colt Python 357 Magnum. I had to look it up - I thought it might be a relic from one of the movies he worked on in the 50’s, but according to my grandma, it was just “one of those things your grandpa just insisted on having.” Jeff McCabe has gotten more of his fair share of calls from people like myself, who accidentally come across family firearms in their home and don’t have the first idea of what to do with them. The owner of California Gun Services, Jeff is in the business of safe gun storage, ownership and disposal. The first step? Following California gun laws. I had zero clue that by driving the Colt to the Army Navy to try and turn it in I’d be breaking a couple laws. According to Jeff there are laws restricting gifting or selling a gun, receiving a gun, borrowing a gun, transporting a gun, even storing guns. New laws come out every year, and it is almost impossible for anyone, even aficionados to keep up with them. Jeff and his team work closely with local law enforcement to ensure the process is easy and safe. 30 October 2019

My grandma hadn’t touched the revolver in years, though my grandfather had made sure she shot it at some canned tomatoes on a desert trip when they were younger. “I’m afraid the grandkids might find it,” she told me that day. “I’d feel safer without it.” A sentiment shared by Jeff’s friends, family and fellow church parishioners - many of whom have sought his assistance over the years to ensure the proper storage or disposal of firearms they found themselves in possession of upon the passing of a loved one.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

What initially started as a favor for a friend has grown into a bonafide side business as word has spread about Jeff’s particular skill set and confidence in handling firearms. As the owner of the Orange-based One Way Painting, Jeff often encountered situations whereby he would come across a firearm when moving furniture around for a client prior to starting a painting project. “Many times, the firearm belonged to my client’s father, grandfather or late husband and she never touched it because she was afraid of guns, but didn’t know how to get rid of it safely. So many times these guns are loaded and just stuck in a nightstand or stored under the bed.” Raised in a family that had firearms for hunting and sporting, Jeff was taught early on how to handle, be respectful and always be safe when handling firearms. I believe that we as Americans have a great privilege to be able to own

a firearm, but with that comes an even greater responsibility to not only protect ourselves legally by complying with Federal and State laws, but to protect ourselves, our neighbors and most importantly, our children from all possible dangers associated with firearms.” San Clemente resident Rhonda Murphy couldn’t agree more. “There are many things to deal with when a loved one dies. In 2010, when cleaning out my husband’s closet, I came across several of his guns. I didn’t want to keep them and was unsure of what to do with them. My daughters didn’t want the guns and I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of storing them as my grandkids are often at my house. A friend suggested I should call Jeff. He was very nice, easy to talk with, trustworthy and knowledgable. He came to my house, checked all the guns to make sure they were unloaded and removed them. Jeff also told me that one of the guns was a collector’s item and was able to sell it for me. One less thing to have to worry about. I can’t recommend Jeff enough.” As part of their auditing procedures, California Gun Services gives clients the option of a Voluntary Registration Form (in the case where the weapon was inherited). Many of Jeff’s clients are like my grandma who just prefers that the gun is destroyed. Jeff holds a Federal Firearm License and as such, is able to take possession of firearms without a Gun Transfer. He can also inspect firearms to ensure they are still in working order, and even tell you if the gun, or guns, you have are California Compliant. “Most people are unaware that firearms that were purchased legally from a gun shop just a year ago may now be illegal in California,” says Jeff. “If we find a firearm that is out of compliance with the law, you’ll receive solid advice on how to make it compliant, sell it out of state, or potentially dispose of it. Our process is approved and certified by local law enforcement, it’s legal, safe and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws. “Since firearms last more than a lifetime, families often have small and large collections of guns in their home. Knowing what you have and what to do with those firearms is important. Whether it’s from a death in the family, inheritance, or just a need for clearing out some that you know you will never use, we can help. Following California gun laws is essential. We come to you. It’s a safe, easy and professional process.”

California Gun Services’ processes are approved and certified by local law enforcement and adheres to all state and federal firearms laws for the following services:

GUN AUDIT

Jeff will come to you and inspect your firearms to make sure they are in proper working order and that they are California Compliant. If your firearm is not compliant with the California Law, you will receive solid advice on how to make it compliant or possibly dispose or sell it out of state.

GUN DISPOSAL

If a firearm is found to be unsafe to use, cannot be repaired and has no historical value. California Gun Services will permanently destroy it by torching the receiver or frame into three parts or cutting it with a saw into five parts. Jeff will document this with photos and log it for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and email you the proof of destruction.

GUN TRANSFERS

Private Party Transfers happen between two individuals and will need to take place at a Federal Firearm Licensed Dealer. Since this needs to be done at a Gun Shop, Jeff cannot offer this as an in-home service. If you have inherited or legally obtain a firearm, he can provide you with a Voluntary Registration form or you can download it from the California Department of Justice which is NOT required to do at a gun shop. California Gun Services has a Federal Firearm License and can legally come to you and take possession of a firearm without a Gun Transfer.

GUN PURCHASES OF UNWANTED FIREARMS OR COLLECTIONS

California Gun Services will come to you and appraise a single gun or an entire collection of any size. You will receive an explanation of how guns are legally sold and transferred. California Gun Services can then make you a fair market value offer and/or explain how a gun can be put up for sale on consignment.

AMMUNITION AUDIT To connect with Jeff directly, call (714) 639-9608 or for more information, visit CaliforniaGunServices.com.

California Gun Services will make sure you are using the right ammunition for the firearms that you have and that it is legal in the State of California. Jeff will inspect the ammunition to make sure that it has been stored correctly, is in good condition and will ensure that the ammunition is being stored properly, using the right type of container and stored in the right location in your home. Scott and Diana Schmitt

Ode to Joy Developing Memories with Accent Portraits by Diana and San Juan Photo & Digital By Jody Robinson I was at a retail store the other day, when a group of tourists asked me to take a photo of them in front of the window display - an incredible arch made solely out of the pages of reclaimed books from a library that had mostly burned down. An ode to what had been once. The photo? An ode to an ode. We’ve all heard the saying, “a picture is worth 1,000 words.” How many words are your memories worth? Diana and Scott Schmitt believe that those photos, 42 October 2019

those odes, are priceless. At the San Juan Capistrano-based Accent Portraits by Diana and San Juan Photo & Digital, the couple have devoted the last three decades to taking and developing memories for their customers. “People ask us all the time what we specialize in,” says Diana. “‘Life’ is what we respond with. We want to be there for you and your family every step of the way, from preschool portraits, to beach days, to weddings and pets. Private homes, debutante balls and birthdays for ages 1-101!” Giving clients the best quality covers much more than a simple photo. Using a lifetime of skills, Diana and Scott set out in 1989 to get each client the product they wanted. With each person’s shifting needs come the full range of services that Accent Portraits and San Juan Photo & Digital can provide: $30 specials, a birthday club, portrait memories in a fun, easy fashion. “We’re like a family here. We are taking photos now of kids whose parents came in to see me almost thirty years ago!” Thirty years ago, not many could predict that film photography would almost go extinct. The rise of the digital age overwhelmed analogue, nearly to the point of no

MAKE AN IMPACT

return. Yet, many amateur and professional photographers still swear by old-fashioned chemistry. The new problem? Almost nobody develops photos anymore. Short on your own dark room like the rest of us? Luckily, the wide range of services Diana and Scott offer covers everything from film to phones - and has been busy uniting the digital and analogue worlds for its customers in a fun, easy fashion. “We’re still the only lab that processes film,” says Scott, “and it’s making a huge comeback. Everyone has photos on their phones that would otherwise never be printed. San Juan Photo to the rescue!” The last man standing, as it were, Accent Portraits and San Juan Photo & Digital are out to change the photography game entirely. Not just film, or portraits, or product development. “It isn’t just better services: it’s better service.” Cheryl Wayland, long-time employee and staple of the South County shop, knows the name and story behind almost every client Scott and Diana have. “We take care of our own here,” says Diana. “That means free portraits for seniors at the community center each year, donated portrait certificates to each charity and school that asks, and free event coverage for animal rescue organizations. It’s good for everyone.” While Diana and Scott have plenty to do in their free time, from walking the family dog to riding horses, the real hobby lies in the time they dedicate to each client that walks in their doors. But being award-winning photographers and the developers of quality photos at an award winning custom lab isn’t where the fun stops with Diana and Scott. That joy you felt when you developed a roll of film after a family vacation? Could you describe that feeling, those memories with 1,000 words? You could certainly try. Doggie Dental Care Just like people, your furry friends need dental care to prevent tooth decay By Lynlee Fluent, DVM

J

ust like proper nutrition and regular exercise, dental hygiene is a key component to your pet’s overall health and well-being. Some people just expect their pets to have bad breath, but just like their owners, cats and dogs can suffer from periodontal disease, oral pain, and tooth loss as a result of poor (or nonexistent) dental care. From the American Veterinary Dental College: “Periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats, and is entirely preventable. By three years of age, most dogs and cats have some evidence of periodontal disease. Unfortunately, other than bad breath, there are few signs of the disease process evident to the owner, and professional dental cleaning and periodontal therapy often comes too late to prevent extensive disease or to save teeth. As a result, periodontal disease is usually under-treated, and may cause multiple problems in the oral cavity and may be associated with damage to internal organs in some patients as they age.” 46 October 2019

PREVENTING DENTAL DISEASE IN YOUR CAT OR DOG Tooth brushing and regular dental prophylaxis (ultrasonic scaling above and below the gumline, polishing and full-mouth x-rays under general anesthesia) are the best preventive measures. Brushing should be daily and should start with the puppy and kitten to create good habits, using a small pediatric toothbrush or a pet-specific toothbrush. Dental prophylaxis performed by a veterinary professional should be done regularly based on your vet’s recommended schedule, usually at least once a year once the pet reaches about 3 years of age. Home dental care in the form of dental chews and toys that mimic a toothbrush are recommended as well, of course always under the guidance of your veterinarian. Beware of “anesthesia-free” dental procedures that only address above the gumline, and not under the gums where most of the bacteria and disease lies.

REGULAR CHECKUPS AND PROFESSIONAL CARE Your vet will examine your pet’s teeth during routine exams, so visit your veterinarian every 6 to 12 months for a wellness check-up. As your pet ages, it may need more frequent dental care in the form of anesthetic dental prophylaxis and oral surgery as it becomes more susceptible to periodontal disease. Most surgical procedures can be performed right in your regular vet’s office, while some complicated procedures may require referral to a veterinary dental specialist. Catching and treating the disease early (and prevention!) greatly reduces the need for oral surgery for your pet. Lynlee Fluent, DVM is the co-owner of Ortega Animal Care Center located at 27341 Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano. For more information, visit www.oaccpets.com or call (949) 487-7600.

Pets of the Month Three year old Figgy is what you’d call a gentle soul. She has a sweet personality and enjoys being brushed and petted. Figgy prefers a quiet lifestyle and would make an ideal lap cap for someone looking for a goodnatured feline friend.

Cheetah may look like an exotic wildcat, but she definitely has the personality of a loving lap cat. Rather than sprinting through the savannah, she prefers to lounge by your side. Cheetah is three years old, gets along well with other kitties, and would make a great fit in just about any home.

Cosmo is a scruffy little guy that you can’t help but fall in love with. From his toothy grin to his loveable demeanor, he has all the makings of a great family dog. Cosmo is three years old, gets along with other dogs, and enjoys meeting new people. Could he be the one for you?

This happy puppy is Cash, a six month old shepherd mix who has come a long way. When initially brought to the shelter, Cash was very scared and mostly hairless due to skin infection and mange. After medical attention and a lot of love, he is growing up to be quite a handsome and healthy pup. Cash is now ready for adoption and can’t wait to find his forever family.

If you would like to know more about the animals listed here, please call the San Clemente/Dana Point Animal Shelter at (949)492-1617 or visit with them at 221 Avenida Fabricante, San Clemente.

The Law Firm of Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie:

BRINGING JUSTICE HOME

M

y sister was hit by a snowboarder when she was sixteen. On skis, just a couple of turns from the bottom of the hill - in plain sight of a SLOW sign. The snowboarder was young; not as young as my sister, but still, a young man. My parents, long-time skiers, contacted him directly, trying to see if they could get any results at all: any reparations for their high-school sophomore, laid up on the couch for innumerable weeks. There was nothing they could do. I remember feeling helpless as a child, watching the entire drama unfold. I can’t imagine what my parents must have felt. No one could help. No loopholes. No empathy, from anyone else involved. There is a longstanding joke in the mainstream media that all lawyers are snakes. The word attorney no longer brings to mind the grainy black and white image of Gregory Peck defending the downtrodden as Atticus Finch. Certainly, in some cases, the joke must contain some shred of truth. But at Allen, Flatt, Ballidis & Leslie, the welcoming, family-like environment they’ve curated isn’t too far off from the home ambience of the fictional Finch family. Folks who actually want to do good in the world. Right wrongs. Obtain real results. Suzanne Leslie is a managing partner and attorney at Allen Flatt for more than 30 years, and prides herself on 60 October 2019

the reputation they have built. “Our years of experience have given us more knowledge in the personal industry field than other law firms can claim. What sets us apart is exactly as our tagline says: experience, compassion, results.” As a firm, Allen Flatt have helped many families through the emotional trauma of a great many personal injury cases. Though they have attorneys that focus on estate planning, preparing wills, trusts, and contest matters, personal injury hits the closest to home. “We care about our clients, and our primary focus is to help them deal with the difficulties of being involved in an accident- be it pedestrian accident, automobile accident, slip and fall, or dog bite.” Handling the claims process for their clients lets them pursue their medical recoveries in peace, unlike my sister, or my parents. Fighting a losing cause often takes more energy than simply healing - or letting someone else rest, to do battle with their own body and take the necessary steps to get back to normal: whatever the new normal looks like. Offering a free consultation, with the promise that no recovery means no fee, attorneys like Suzanne offer their services on a personal level. “I started

out in the personal injury field to help people. I want to make sure my clients feel taken care of through every second of their claim.” Recognized by the American Institute of Personal Injury Attorneys and the National Association of Professional Women, Ms. Leslie has recovered millions of dollars for clients and thousands of settlements for clients. “Everyone in the firm shares compassion for the clients more than on a business level, and many of us have had first hand personal experience in what they may be going through,” she says. As a leader in her field, it is imperative to stay abreast of the newest strictures and developments in insurance law. The more she knows, the better her chances of winning your case. Atticus Finch would probably tell you that winning isn’t everything. But sometimes, to folks like my parents, to whom winning would mean seeing my sister get the reparations for her accident paid out, and letting her find her way back to walking again, winning is the only thing.

For more information on what Suzanne and her associates can do for you, call (949) 752-7474, or email contactus@allenflatt.com.

Subject of the Month: Medicare Annual Enrollment is Here!

I

t’s that time of year when Medicare Advantage plan members and Medicare Drug plan members can change from one plan to another, guaranteed issue. Applications can be submitted 10/15-12/7. Why someone may want to use this time (AEP) to make a change would be that there may be a HMO plan with zero monthly premium that they can enroll in without losing any of their current doctors. It also is a good time for people who haven’t been proactive about their health to now take steps to establish a relationship with a primary care physician and the medical network that they associate with. Many 2020 plans have wonderful benefits in addition to $0 copays for most medical services. The potential for savings vs. paying a monthly premium for a Medicare Supplement plan and a Medicare drug plan can be life changing! Everyone’s needs are unique to them. The “community meeting” setting has become outdated (in my opinion) in meeting the individual needs of those that attend. Many times, attendees leave feeling more confused than when they arrived, and frustrated over the time wasted. If you would like one on one time with me to help you understand your choices and help you make the right educated decision for 2020, call or email me soon to schedule your complimentary consultation at my local office.

A wig can make all the difference in helping you look good and feel better about hair loss. No matter what the cause - cancer, chemotherapy, alopecia, female pattern baldness or thinning hair ... Our goal is to help you look and feel your best!
