Now nine, Nate, along with his scientist and educator guests, explores everything from chemistry and climate change to the human brain and bat biology. Nate truly does a fantastic job and if your child is curious about science, then this show is well worth a listen!

Tumble

Described as a “kid-friendly Radiolab,” Tumble explores a variety of science topics, from outer space and bacteria to dinosaurs and the human body, interviewing experts in the field. Tumble is hosted by Lindsay, a science journalist, and Marshall, a teacher. Most episodes run from 10 to 20 minutes long and can be enjoyed by kids of all ages, as well as their parents.

Wow in the World

Produced by NPR, Wow in the World delves into topics involving space, technology, and the human brain in each 20 to 30 minute episode. Tech geeks will love episodes that explore 3D printing and artificial intelligence, and space lovers can learn all about black holes and alien asteroids. There are also plenty of other topics sure to interest listeners of all ages: What makes chili peppers hot? Can we make ice cream melt more slowly? 60-Second Science

Even shorter, but no less entertaining and engaging, 60-Second Science is hosted by the award-winning magazine Scientific American. Every episode is not quite a mere one minute;

Host Eric Molinsky interviews writers, artists, filmmakers, and game designers about how they create fictional worlds and why fans love them. Molinsky takes on topics in half-hourlong episodes such as, food in science fiction worlds, the plight of androids, fictional languages, and more.

SCIENCE PODCASTS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Star Talk

Astrophysicist and pop culture icon Neil deGrasse Tyson discusses astronomy, physics, and life in the universe with a new co-host each week. Co-hosts run the gamut from celebrities (Katy Perry, Kevin Smith) to fellow scientists (Alan Alda, Bill Nye) and everyone in between. Each episode is about 50 minutes to an hour long and great for the whole family to listen to at home or on a road trip.

Science Friday

Science Friday (or “SciFri”) is a call-in talk show that typically broadcasts on public radio stations every Friday, and is also available to listen to in podcast form. Science journalist and host Ira Flatow discusses current news on science, nature, and technology. Each episode is composed of two hour-long segments, and topics are as varied as can be: voting, how genetics affect your sleep, theories on dark matter, and a week devoted to cephalopod science.

Mindful Behavior Modification for Beginners

What is behavior modification in the context of mindfulness?

For many of us, behavior modification involves changing the way we act in order to live more authentic and enriching lives. But this definition, while somewhat helpful, does not capture the full scope of mindful behavior modification.

The process of changing our behaviors is a scientifically studied technique — one that involves positive or negative reinforcement to achieve the desired outcome. By introducing a reward and punishment system to our everyday behaviors, we can systematically increase the amount of good, mindful behaviors we engage in and reduce the amount of anti-mindfulness actions we take.

This is great news for adults and children alike trying to change their lifestyle habits. If you are a parent looking for a way to reduce the amount of TV your kids watch, or a spouse who wants to reinforce the amount of support your husband or wife gives you, behavior modification can help you do exactly that.

BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION DEFINED

Before we go over behavior modification techniques, it is important to understand exactly what behavior modification is and does. The process of changing behavior is a standard therapeutic treatment used by many mental health professionals to

reinforce good habits and break old ones.

Based on this, behavior modification uses operant conditioning to change existing behaviors by replacing them with others. With this definition, it becomes possible to start modifying our behavior in pursuit of a specific goal.

The following are three different types of behavior modification tactics you can use to improve your everyday wellbeing and become more mindful.

MODIFICATION METHOD NUMBER ONE: POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Positive reinforcement is probably the most commonly understood form of behavior modification. This involves encouraging desired activities through a reward-based initiative.

What does this mean in a real-life context? For adults, this might involve drafting a predetermined contract between the person trying to modify their behavior and the one holding them accountable. So, if you are trying to become more mindful — such

as wanting to appreciate and spend more quality time with your spouse — you would agree with your spouse to write up a list of behaviors that qualify as quality time and engage in positive reinforcement every time you correctly display those behaviors.

Positive reinforcement could mean receiving compliments from your husband or wife every time you spend quality time together unprompted. Or, it could take the shape of a weekly reward — a night out on the town or a movie date — if you successfully engage in mindful behavior with your spouse that week.

For children, the process becomes more rudimentary: if you want your child to be more mindful, you might give them a treat or celebrate their behavior every time they engage in the behavior you outlined for them. This might be drawing more, spending more time outside, or even making new friends at school.

MODIFICATION METHOD NUMBER TWO: NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT

When it comes to behavior modification, the opposite of positive reinforcement is negative reinforcement. And while many adults think that negative reinforcement involves punishment, the process simply means removing an unwanted enforcer upon successfully engaging in the desired behavior.

For example, until you become more mindful, you might commit yourself to exercising heavily every day — an exhausting process that you do not particularly enjoy. Your incentive is to stop exercising so heavily, and so to remove this negative reinforcer you spend more time with your spouse. This is negative reinforcement in a nutshell: taking away unwanted stimuli once your behavior consistently changes.

A negative reinforcer for children might be taking away additional afterschool teaching once they have successfully learned a subject or im-

proved their grades. The goal here is not to punish the person whose behavior you are trying to modify — with negative reinforcement, the objective is simply to remove an external factor once behaviors have changed.

MODIFICATION METHOD NUMBER THREE: PUNISHMENT

While positive reinforcement means introducing rewards and negative reinforcement deals with removing stimuli, punishment involves instating something specifically unpleasant as a result of the unwanted behavior. This is the kind of behavior modification most parents are intimately familiar with — factors such as verbal reprimands and early bedtimes are a key part of teaching children that inappropriate behavior is not tolerated.

For adults, punishment is more nuanced. You cannot exactly send your spouse to bed early for their bad behavior. But, if both parties mutually agree upon the principle, you can work together with your spouse to develop a list of potential punishments that can be applied if one of you fails to change their behavior. The most important part of this method is that the punishment should not be done out of spite, anger, or resentment — doing so can undermine the behavior modification. After all, a spiteful child or spouse is not the best recipient of mindful instruction.

Another important thing to remember is that punishment should not be the first behavior modification method you rely on when trying to change your behavior or the behavior of others. Having new tools in your mindfulness toolbelt — such as positive and negative reinforcement — means you have other ways to modify behavior before automatically resorting to punishment.

BECOMING MORE MINDFUL THROUGH BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION

It makes sense that mindfulness and behavior modification go hand in hand. After all, mindfulness starts with modifying your behavior to be more present, aware, and appreciative. Introducing reinforcements to encourage that mindset can be a radically transformative way to quickly become more mindful.

The next time you or a close family member is engaging in unwanted actions, consider the prospect of behavior modification — you may just find it helpful. Alternatively, if you want more ways to increase your mindfulness or the mindfulness of others, check out the following books: The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, Atomic Habits by James Clear, and The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.

Diane Silverstein had never heard of the show “Absolutely Fabulous” when she named her aptly-titled gifts and décor boutique in central Huntington Beach. But the fun-loving, irreverent, blonde, champagne-promoting show does give a glimpse into what makes Absolutely Fabulous such a treasure. Absolutely Fabulous is not your runof-the-mill, Hallmark-style gift shop; they are as fun and irreverent as the show they share a name with. “We’re like family here,” glows Diane. “I give my regulars a 10% discount on everything, and we often know what they’re looking for before they do.”

A Promise Fulfilled in Orange County

Patients across the region gain increased access to advanced cancer care

When City of Hope unveiled its bold vision to bring its lifesaving care and pioneering research to Orange County, it was in response to a pressing need in the community.

Nearly 20% of patients with cancer left the region for advanced care, which created a burden on patients and their families. Additionally, cancer rates are expected to grow in Orange County by nearly 20% in by 2028.

City of Hope Newport Beach, the first phase of City of Hope Orange County’s expansion, opened in January 2020 and a comprehensive cancer campus is opening in Irvine next year. With the addition of the Pacific Shores Medical Group locations, City of Hope Orange County now has four locations in Orange County providing highly specialized cancer care for patients and their families.

The Orange County locations are in Huntington Beach, Irvine Sand Canyon and two locations in Newport Beach (Fashion Island and Lido).

With 1 in 3 Americans receiving a cancer diagnosis and with everyone impacted by cancer in some way, that’s good news.

City of Hope is investing $1 billion to develop and operate a cancer campus of the future and network of advanced cancer care in Orange County. Lennar Foundation Cancer Center will open in the summer of 2022, followed by the county’s only specialty hospital exclusively focused on treating and curing cancer scheduled to open in 2025.

“This expansion means that we’ve quadrupled outreach in the county,” Walker said. “As we look to the fu-

ture and open the Irvine campus, we will have a comprehensive network of cancer care established, with breakthrough treatments and expert cancer care within reach throughout Orange County.”

Pacific Shores’ 14 physicians, 11 nurse practitioners and physicians and more than 200 staff became part of City of Hope on Aug. 6.

Established in 1986, Pacific Shores Medical Group has locations across Los Angeles and Orange counties. Did you know you may be able to take your 401(k), 403(b), or 457 plan and roll it into another type of retirement account while you are still working? Let’s look at how these rollovers can happen and the pros and cons of making them.

To start, some basics. Distributions from 401(k) plans and most other employer-sponsored retirement plans are taxed as ordinary income, and if you take one before age 59½, a 10% federal income tax penalty commonly applies. In addition, 20% of the withdrawn amount is withheld for tax purposes. Generally, once you reach age 72, you must begin taking required minimum distributions.1

Now, the fine print. You may be able to take a distribution from your qualified, employer-sponsored retirement plan while still working, via an in-service non-hardship withdrawal. This is done by arranging a direct rollover of these assets to an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) in order to potentially avoid both the 10% penalty and the 20% tax withholding in the process. It’s important to note that this option is only available if allowed by your employer.2

It may be smart to speak to your financial professional before making any changes.

Generally, distributions from traditional IRAs must begin once you reach age 72. The money distributed to you is taxed as ordinary income. When such distributions are taken before age 59½, they may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.

The criteria for making in-service non-hardship withdrawals can vary. Some workplace retirement plans simply prohibit them. Others permit them when you have been on the job for at least five years or when assets in your plan have accumulated for at least two years or you are 100% vested in your account.2

Weigh the pros and cons. Who knows if your reinvested assets will perform better in an IRA than they did in your

company’s retirement plan? Only time will tell. Right now, you can put up to $7,000 into an IRA, annually, if you are 50 or older. The limit on annual additions, however, is much more impressive at $58,000 for 2021. Lastly, if your employer matches your retirement plan contributions, getting out of the plan may mean losing future matches.3

I was in middle school at my best friend’s house when her Dad got a call one afternoon. If you’re currently on Medicare this applies to you if you have a Medicare drug plan or if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan (HMO or PPO). This does NOT apply to your Medicare Supplement plans; such as Plan F, G, N etc.

The Annual Notice of Change is a document you receive in the mail (or online if you signed up for that) that explains the changes that your Medicare plan may have made for the upcoming year. Some changes that you would see on your ANOC are increases or decreases in your monthly premium, changes to your co-pays, deductibles, the annual out of pocket maximum and the plan’s drug formulary. (the prescription drugs that the plan gives you access to at a set copay or co-insurance amount)

You will receive your Annual Notice of Change every year around the end of September. It’s not a fancy envelope with bright red letters reading, “Open Me, I’m Important to Read” rather it’s generally printed on an inexpensive paper resembling a newspaper, and it usually reads and looks like a pamphlet. All plans have some type of change for the upcoming year. An ANOC will list 2 columns, one is what your benefit is for the current year, the other column will show what it will change to in the new year. Sometimes the change is good; a lower premium,

deductible, co-pay or maximum out of pocket known as a MOOP (see, there’s another acronym for you!)

What you want to make sure of is that you are aware and informed when the change is not good news; a higher deductible, higher co-pays or premium or MOOP. At that point, you can decide if it’s going to affect you enough to want to look at making a change to your coverage for the new year.

In the Medicare Advantage plan world, the HMO plans seem to have positive changes for the most part, but the few PPO’s out there in Orange County not so much.

The biggest offender of changes prompting people to look elsewhere is the “Stand Alone Medicare RX plans” that people who use Medicare as their primary insurance coupled with a Medicare supplement plan pay for. These plans seem to always be giving an increase to their deductible, premium and co-pay amounts. Unfortunately knowing how to go about finding the right Medicare drug plan on their own isn’t something most Medicare beneficiaries know how to do.

Complication Rates After Surgery for BPH

A very important large clinical study was presented at the European Association of Urology 2021 Annual Meeting (EAU 2021).
