– PUBLISHER'S NOTE – Dear Reader: 2020 will forever be a year for the history books. Whichever way you slice it, the 10 months we’ve spent so far have been, for most Americans, some of the strangest of our entire lives. Some have been at home for more continuous weeks than ever before. Some haven’t seen loved ones since spring. Social unrest, a global pandemic, and a Presidential election have dominated the headlines. I’ve even spent a considerable amount of time wondering what hobbies my neighbors have learned in the past few months. If you were to look on any social media platform, it looks a lot like sourdough starters, backyard crafting, TikTok challenges, and random woodworking projects. In reality, what I’m realizing is that we’ve all learned that we contain an allotment of durability that we weren’t aware of before. If you’re one of the people who has taken up woodworking in your spare time, you might find that like others who have come before you, there are specific types of wood that work better than others: walnut, for example: extremely strong, stable, and shock resistant. Or ash, a carpenters favorite, for its toughness and flexibility. Traits that we’ve also come to see present in so many of our friends and neighbors, and especially my fellow small business owners. We’ve had to modify our entire lives over the better part of the last year, but the challenges have only served to highlight the way many of us already approach our respective industries. With resolve, courage, and the ability to pivot at a moment’s notice to adapt to a changing market or our customer’s demand. The very definition of flexibility resounds in my ears even as I consider the impact that COVID-19 has had on my community and those around me: ‘the ability to be easily modified to respond to altered circumstances or conditions’. We can’t open the doors? We’ll shop outside. We can’t serve inside? Al fresco it is. Online shop? Done. Curbside pickup? Check. Our resilience is what first made us small business owners. We peered into the market and saw that we were needed: our products, our services, our personalities and strengths. And our resilience is what will sustain us through this, and the next chapter to follow. Perhaps we’ll have some new hobbies to boast about as well. I hope you enjoy this edition and as always, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with any questions, comments or ways in which we may be of service.

Building a Secure Future Ken Earwood, Titan Financial & Insurance Services By Jody Robinson

In Greek Mythology, Titans ruled long before the gods existed. Behemoths, they opened the world for what was to come. Today, we know a varied few as true titans: of industry, literature, music, mathematics, sport.

K

it Marlowe, The Beatles, Einstein, Teemu Selanne (for the Orange County natives). Ken Earwood might not be on your shortlist yet, but as the President of Titan Financial and Insurance Services, his expertise is of the influence you’ll want when looking towards retirement. Sixteen years ago, Ken started Titan Financial & Insurance Services, Inc. in Huntington Beach and has operated in the ensuing years since in the same location. But the journey to opening his own firm began more than two decades ago, with simple work ethic. Much like the world-builders, “my parents taught me everything about starting from the ground up. My Dad was an electrical engineer, and worked for the same company for 48 years. My mom was an entrepreneur. Everything was earned.” A graduate from Long Beach State with a degree in Business Marketing, Ken jumped into the industry feet first, with a job at one of the nation’s largest brokerage firms. With his college sweetheart by his side, loving his day-to-day was easy, and remains so today. Without her support, we couldn’t have come this far. “Everyone remembers what it’s like not to have money. Like when you were a young married couple just starting out. We had nothing to begin with, but we had each other and our work ethic.” The work at Titan changes constantly, but their number one priority is ensuring that the biggest fear in financial planning never comes to fruition for any of their clients: that you outlive your money. “We make sure each person that comes to see us has a plan in place to ensure they have funds that will last the rest of their life," he says. “You don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck forever like when you were first married....you certainly don’t have end up back where you started in retirement.” Ken meets with his clients annually, keeping them on the right track, en-

suring each allocation is in the proper place, and that individual checklist items are taken care of: life insurance, investment taxes, retirement income planning, chronic care planning and Legacy/Wealth transfer planning with tax-free death benefits. At every stage, he is there to meet your needs. Getting started, accumulating wealth, getting ready to distribute it over your retired years, or even pass onto loved ones. There isn’t much they can’t cover, and the pride Ken takes in his client services shows. Most firms simply drill into accumulation, “they don’t bet on safety in retirement and distribution. Putting up numbers on the overall market is all well and good, but how do you make sure you’re not going to come up short in the long run?” “My kids are so important to me - and I want to leave them a legacy they’re proud of as well," says Ken. "I have two sons and a daughter, and it is incredibly valuable for them to see a balanced book in the making, so they have something to model.” The Titans were displaced, eventually. Their age ended, as will all of ours. But what, Ken would like to know, will be left after you’re gone? Going to church and having faith in Jesus Christ teaches us to give service, help in the well-being of others, our neighbors and community. All aspects of his personal and professional life that Ken hopes are communicated when clients put their financial futures in Titan’s hands. “I’ve been in this business for 28 years: I want my clients to trust the time I’ve put in, but also the man that I am. One who is looking towards the future with you. A secure, wellplanned, stress-free future.” Titan Financial & Insurance Services, Inc. 16531 Bolsa Chica St., Ste. 250 Huntington Beach (714) 840-9283 www.TitanFinancial.net

Boredomtunity Ways Boredom Makes Kids and Ourselves More Extraordinary! By Jeanne Huybrechts, Chief Academic Officer, Stratford School

“The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.” – Dorothy Parker

as intrinsically good, too often curating and scheduling activities to fill every minute of every day. To be sure, busy kids are happy kids, but our habit of overscheduling – for both children and adults – leaves little time for extended daydreaming. Children’s daily schedules, even on weekends, are often tightly scheduled with a myriad of activities and little unstructured time. Second, the onset of boredom is nearly always uncomfortable. Before one begins daydreaming, before that daydreaming leads to creative thinking, there is discomfort – and the very human instinct is to fill the gap with entertainment. When a moment or hour of boredom presents itself, it is too often replaced by a distraction – often an activity that emanates from a screen. The Internet offers a nearly infinite number of distractions to fill any moment of boredom, and the challenge is to resist the temptation to fill the momentary discomfort of “boredom” with the quick fixes to be found among YouTube and TikTok videos.

CREATING A BOREDOMTUNITY

THE BRAIN BENEFITS FROM BOREDOM

Parents interested in building their children’s creative capacities can start by ensuring time in each day and each week for unstructured play or structured activities that allow for simultaneous daydreaming. Walking, skating, bike-riding all come to mind. Arts and crafts, gardening, house chores all allow one to be physically busy, but with a reduced cognitive load that allows for daydreaming. I cannot tell you how many ideas I have had or problems I have solved while ironing, cooking, or sweeping the garage! Parents can free up some time for their children to become bored and then reduce the number of “shiny objects” – again, often a screen image – that kids will instinctively reach for in those first uncomfortable moments of boredom. Make space for boredom, and then resist the temptation to fill it! Not only is it good for you, but it just might be the best thing you can do for your kids!

Modern living presents a couple of impediments to boredom that makes space for creative daydreaming. First, we have come to value “busy-ness”

BOREDOM IMPROVES CREATIVITY

WHY ARE COGNITIVE VACATIONS IMPORTANT?

Before addressing questions about nurturing, navigating and/or mitigating boredom, I think it’s important to identify the state of mind we’re talking about. Too often we think of “boredom” as a passive deficit state – “nothing to do” or “not entertained” — when, in fact, we should flip that mindset and think of boredom as opportunity. Just as we look forward to weekends or holidays, when we don’t have to work or go to school and are more likely to have discretionary chunks of time, we should similarly see “boredom” as a respite, as free time for our minds. When presented with holiday or weekend “free time” we relax or pursue hobbies, which often revitalizes us for the next round of work or study. If we think of “boredom” as a break from the cognitive load of school or work and use the time for cognitive hobbies – daydreaming, imagining, or other creative thinking –we are revitalized in much the same way.

Prominent writers, poets, and artists have described profound creative leaps that originated with a quiet moment and nothing to do, epiphanies that emerged from extended periods of day-dreaming that began as “boredom.” Highly creative types often speak of inspiration or revelation that surfaced in quiet moments while walking, riding or waiting – all activities that could be regarded as unproductive and “boring” yet were anything but. Numerous psychologist-researchers have established that boredom can trigger mind-wandering which leads to creativity. Moments of boredom should be cherished, or at least recognized as opportunity!

CITY OF HOPE LAUNCHES LEADING-EDGE SCREENINGS AND PROGRAMS TO COUNTER LUNG CANCER Finding lung cancer at its earliest stage and having access to highly specialized cancer care experts gives Orange County patients their best shot for survival

D

elivering on its promise to bring lifesaving cancer care to Orange County, City of Hope is launching early detection and prevention programs to fight lung cancer –the second most common cancer in Orange County and the number one cause of OC cancer deaths.

lung cancer screenings, with screening taking place at Newport Diagnostic Center.

To meet the community’s pressing need for state-of-the-art lung cancer testing, a new low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening program has been launched at City of Hope’s Newport Beach location.

“Orange County deserves its best shot against lung cancer,” says Ravi Salgia, M.D., Ph.D., the Arthur & Rosalie Kaplan Chair in Medical Oncology at City of Hope, and one of the world’s leading experts on lung cancer treatment. “That’s why we are introducing a screening program that detects lung cancers earlier and greatly enhances the odds of survival. And this is just the latest addition to our many breakthrough lung cancer research and treatment capabilities, including City of Hope’s pioneering use of targeted therapies and personalized medicine to determine the best treatment path for each patient.”

The world-renowned cancer center is currently taking appointments for

age x-rays to produce images of the body from different points of view. The scan takes only seconds, and it doesn’t cause discomfort. The vast majority of lung cancers detected using LDCT can be cured. Research shows that LDCT does a better job finding lung tumors and saves more lives than a routine chest x-ray. In fact, it is the only lung cancer screening recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The USPSTF recommends LDCT for people age 50-80 who currently smoke or used to smoke. “One of the challenges with lung cancer is that it often doesn’t produce symptoms until it is well advanced,” says Dan J. Raz, M.D., M.A.S., a lung cancer surgeon and co-director of the lung cancer program at City of Hope. “However, we are highly encouraged

“Lung cancer screening saves lives. You want to find and fight lung cancer as early as possible, when it can be cured,” Dan Raz, M.D., M.A.S. because studies show that lung cancer detected by LDCT screening will be discovered at an early stage 64% to 85% of the time. It is cost-effective, causes no patient discomfort, and is highly reliable. These factors can make all the difference and lead to a much more positive prognosis for patients. That’s why we are raising awareness among both patients and primary care physicians about the efficacy and accessibility of this lifesaving test.” However, right now only around 15 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed early on, which means people are at risk of missing the opportunity to take their best shot against the disease. “With breakthroughs being made continually in lung cancer research and treatment, patients have more reason for hope than ever,” Raz said. “Lung cancer is serious, but people need to know that early detection with LDCT and early intervention

make lung cancer a curable disease.” Every LDCT is read and interpreted by a highly specialized City of Hope physician who is available to consult with the patient and their primary care physician on the results. The screening can also help identify other treatable smoking-related diseases like emphysema and heart disease. For those whose tests indicate cancer, there is immediate access to City of Hope’s world-renowned multispecialty team of lung cancer experts, along with outstanding compassionate care for patients and families. In another move to help Orange Countians reverse lung cancer incidence, City of Hope offers an innovative virtual smoking cessation program. This social support program is open to people who smoke now or in the past and can be combined with City of Hope’s tobacco dependency program that includes medications to overcome withdrawal symptoms and

You may qualify for a lung cancer screening if you are a high-risk current or former smoker. You may also qualify if you are outside the standard criteria or have additional risk factors. LDCT is recommended for people who are 50-80 years of age who have smoked the equivalent of a pack a day for 20 years and who currently smoke or have quit smoking within the last 15 years.

This non-invasive lifesaving screening is now available. Please call 626-535-3983 for more information or to schedule an appointment. behavioral strategies to break habits that trigger smoking. The emphasis is on getting better, not shaming or blaming those who have yet to rid cigarettes from their lives. People who smoke or used to smoke should talk to their doctors about lung cancer screenings or contact City of Hope to get screened, Raz said. “Lung cancer screening saves lives,” Raz said. “You want to find and fight lung cancer as early as possible, when it can be cured.” For more information about City of Hope Newport Beach, visit cityofhope.org/OC.

THE UROLIFT® SYSTEM… NEW OFFICE BASED TREATMENT OPTION TO TREAT BPH. By Yvette Manard, MPH

BPH, also known as an enlarged prostate, is a common condition that affects over 40 million men in the United States. Many mistakenly believe that BPH only affects older men, but men in their 40’s and 50’s may suffer with symptoms of BPH. BPH places pressure on the urethra and prevents the bladder from functioning normally and/or emptying completely. Symptoms can include frequent and urgent urination, weak urine flow, interrupted sleep from multiple trips to the bathroom, and diminished sexual activity. “BPH symptoms are more than a nuisance - many men find their quality of life is negatively impacted by ongoing symptoms,” says Dr. Robert Pugach, Medical Director of Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center, (PCUMC). Most men diagnosed with BPH are given medications to address their symptoms. However, these prescriptions often don’t provide adequate relief and may cause dizziness, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction. They

have also recently been shown to be a potential cause of dementia and depression. Many men were left with the only other option of surgery - that is until now. “We are thrilled with development of Urolift®. Now, for the first time, urologists have an effective solution to address BPH that avoids the complications and side effects of surgery or ineffective medications,” says Dr. Pugach. “The UroLift® System, offered at PCUMC, is a revolutionary, minimally invasive technology which relieves prostate obstruction instantly and opens the urethra without cutting, heating or removing prostate tissue.” The UroLift® System employs a delivery device to insert the UroLift® permanent implants which are placed during a minimally invasive, in-office procedure. Evans Tran, Physician Assistant at PCUMC explains to patients that “for men who are considered good candidates for Urolift®, the success rates are around 90%. There is minimal downtime and sexual function is preserved!”

16

Dr. Robert Pugach and Evans Tran have been using the Urolift® System with great success for over 2 years. In January of this year they were appointed to the prestigious Urolift® teaching faculty for Teleflex/NEOTRACT, the manufacturers of Urolift®. Pacific Coast Urology Medical Center is also both a National Center of Excellence and Teaching Center for Urolift®. “It is an honor to work with the NEOTRACT team to educate and train urologists, advanced healthcare professionals, and other doctors throughout the United States on this remarkable device,” says Dr. Pugach and Ms. Tran.

Mission Viejo Wigs:

Where Customers are “Family”

M

by Jody robinson

ission Viejo Wigs is truly a family business. Not in the traditional sense, where its owners and operators share the same genes. But rather in such a way that every person who has walked through Owner Betty Darroch’s doors in the 30+ years she has been in operation immediately felt like a member of Darroch’s extended family.

As a professional hair and wig stylist since 1962, Betty began her career at CBS where her résumé reads like a celebrity screenplay starring the coifs of a veritable “who’s who” of Hollywood: Ann Margaret, Carol Lawrence, the Midnight Specials and the Sonny & Cher Show. She went on to work for the Hallelujah Hollywood Show at the MGM Hotel in Las Vegas. But it wasn’t until she opened her own business in Mission Viejo that she felt as though she were “truly doing God’s work.” Her clients today include people who are experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions. Betty specializes in wigs, hairpieces and toupees for women, men and children and carries only the highest quality brands. Each wig or hairpiece is custom fit to the client for the most natural look and feel – no one will know you’re wearing a wig unless you tell them. “Hair loss, whether it is the result of illness, the aging process or heredity, can be a traumatic and emotionally draining experience,” says Betty. “We work with people on a daily basis who are facing the issue of hair loss for the first time. Our goal is to help you find the solution that works best for you and do so in a caring way that makes you realize that you are not alone.” There are wonderful testimonials from longtime customers on her web site (missionviejowigs. com), but for me, the best testament to Betty’s genuine, caring nature came from a source closer to home. When my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer six years ago, there were so many aspects of what she was facing - including the side effects associated wit chemotherapy treatment – that were out of our control. But my mother’s appearance was something she felt she could dictate. We knew she would lose her hair, but she was determined not to “look like a sick person.” From the moment my mother met Betty, she knew she had found the right place and more importantly, the right person to help her. Betty shared so many stories of survival – of longtime customers and friends who fought a similar battle and won. Her warm embrace and inspired hope and help steel her resolve to maintain a positive, fighting attitude when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The wig Betty selected was the perfect color and style for my mother’s face (and head) shape. The wig was so natural looking that my mother

received many compliments on her “new do” and no one was the wiser. It’s been over nine years since my mother completed treatment and is now leading a cancer-free life. Although her own hair has long since grown back, she still often prefers to wear Betty’s wigs on “bad hair days.” Thank you Betty!

Making the Right Connections with

Steve Carter Electric By Jody Robinson

The average American household has 45 lights in it. Cup lighting, recessed, portraiture; indoor, outdoor. Incandescent, CFL, LED. There are likely as many types of fixtures and functions in the residential electrical world as years Steve Carter Electric has been in business. we experienced the benefits for ourselves while visiting family friends in Northern California. With 10 minutes of turning the whole house fan on, all of the warm air had been evacuated from the home, replaced with the cooler ambient air from outside - dropping the temperature in the house by 10 degrees! He was sold. In researching local companies, we came across the Yelp 5-Star rated San Clemente-based family-owned Steve Carter Electric. We couldn’t be happier with the QuietCool whole house fan we had installed - and equally importantly, the service provided by Steve and his team of professionals and are now all set to make quick work of the warm air during our next “hot” spell.

A

staple in south Orange County for the last thirty years, it isn’t hard to imagine why someone might call in the professionals at Steve Carter Electric for help wiring and all things electrical. Dedicated to providing the best quality on every job, and investing in long-term service is the backbone of the business, and what Steve Carter himself carries into every job. “We know that your home is more than a tangle of wires: its not the fixtures, its the connections made inside and out.” Specializing in whole house fans, lighting and electrical upgrades, repairs, back-up power, panel upgrades, landscape lighting, E.V charger installs and general

troubleshooting, there isn’t a job too complex to take on. One of the perks of publishing South County Magazine is being able to give testimonials for local businesses that our family has personally utilized. As a San Juan Capistrano resident blessed to live in coastal OC, I realize it’s ridiculous to refer to the unseasonable warm weather we experienced in September and October as uncomfortably “hot.” But warm air rises and our bedrooms are upstairs where the temperature would get to the mid-80s, which would make it a little warmer than we’d like when trying to get to sleep at night. My husband had been hankering to have a whole house fan installed after

“I knew back in high school that I wanted to learn the trade and become an electrician,” says Steve. “My Dad taught me to take pride in my workmanship, and I’ve carried that through until today. We don’t cut corners because we’d like to be your electricians for life.”

The Proof is in the Paint with

ONE WAY PAINTING By Jody Robinson

Photography of Jeff McCabe by Lana Farfan, Caught in the Moment Photography

Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said “who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you’re saying.” Keeping this quote in mind has served me well over the years, particularly in choosing friends … and when seeking out the services of professionals. In my opinion, integrity isn’t a word heard often enough in the business world. Competitive, certainly.

B

ut unfortunately phrases like “bottom-line oriented,” “unscrupulous,” even “cutthroat” have cropped up in the vernacular when hearing home improvement gone wrong stories from fellow homeowners. That’s why it was so refreshing to come across Jeff McCabe and his Orange County-based One Way Painting. In business since 1976, Jeff and his team serve all of the OC and specialize in interior and exterior residential and commercial painting. They swear by the rules of professionalism: “no cutting corners. No cheap materials. We pay attention to every detail, and never call a job complete until the customer is completely satisfied.” Some might call it good Christian values. Others might say it’s simply good

business. But for the last 42 years, working from the heart has earned One Way Painting such a respected reputation in the industry that the vast majority of their work comes through repeat customers or referrals from repeat customers. The company’s success isn’t merely rooted in customer service though. Boasting a superior knowledge of available product on the market and hiring the most professional crews in the business also goes a long way. “Our reputation speaks for itself; but if it didn’t, we have 16 satisfied employees on our permanent payroll who would put a hand

24

up in defense of the standards we set,” says Jeff. Standards which were born and bred through a commitment to ethical business practices and hard work. In 2001, Jeff teamed up with seasoned professional Ron Bartz as a journeyman, then took over the company when Ron retired, and has been growing it ever since. In 2009, Jeff took the pair of three-man crews and expanded the operation to encompass six crews, two office staff, and a project manager who oversees jobs, right alongside the man with the plan himself. “We currently have four trucks on the road and I’d like a full fleet someday. I’d like to leave a legacy for my daughters, and that means more than just cans of paint and a warehouse full of equipment and materials.” To Jeff, it means taking care of his employees, taking care of his family: taking care of business. The hope is that One Way Painting becomes a household

name, for its quality of work and quality of values. My husband and I can happily attest to both. When we moved into our home in San Juan Capistrano five years ago, we acquired quotes for exterior painting from several contractors, but were particularly impressed with Jeff and his crew. Prior to starting work at our home, Jeff came by in person to go over what the job would entail and answered all of our questions. His team showed up right on

time the first day - and each subsequent day - and at the end of each day everything was cleaned up before they left. “We pride ourselves on working with a team of long-term employees - we do not hire off the street,” says Jeff. “We guarantee our work and do not require payment till the job is completed and the customer is completely pleased with our work.”

Jeff and his crew delivered on these promises and more than exceeded our expectations BEFORE - the result was outstanding work, a job completed on time and on budget and defined by unparalleled customer service (Kelly in his office was hyper-responsive to our inquiries during the estimating process and followed up immediately upon completion of the job to ensure that we were satisfied with the results and our overall experience of working with One Way Painting). We were so pleased with the work that when we decided to update AFTER our kitchen by painting our cabinets and adding hardware (the job is scheduled to start two weeks from the date of this writing so look for a future testimonial feature), we were confident that One Way Painting would be the one and only call we would need to make.

Their attention to detail is found from start to finish. For exterior projects, they begin by power washing to clean and remove any loose paint, mildew or mold. Then the patching: with stucco, trenching around the foundations and priming with an acrylic. They’ll treat your wood siding, eaves, fascia, windows. Main doors, garage doors, trim. Even wrought iron, or other specialty surfaces like patio covers and fences. Most work depends on the client’s preference: semi-gloss, hi-gloss enamel, acrylic, or oil finish. Inside walls see flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi, or hi-gloss. If you have natural wood cabinets and they need refinishing, One Way’s crew will see to it that they look new again. Also licensed and bonded as commercial painters, Jeff’s crew has been making businesses and their buildings look new again for 42 years. With a free on-site estimate, your custom needs are sure to have a custom solution. No deposits required, and “no surprises along the way,” Jeff is quick to add. “I think at the end of the day what sets us apart is taking our time with each and every customer that comes our way,” says Jeff. “We run a business like every person we interact with is family.” They may not be the cheapest out there, but then that wouldn’t fly in Emerson’s eyes, and not in Jeff’s either. “Our business is based on the Christian ethic of treating every customer with honesty and integrity. Every job is done ‘as unto the Lord.’ Does this mean we’re perfect? No. It does mean that we strive to do the best painting job possible.”

All my parents had to do was focus on moving.” Homes are sold to SHPP truly “as is” – clutter and all. There are no failed escrows, no commissions, no closing costs and no repair credits or seller concessions – it is a certain sale at a certain price, with a flexible closing date and access to a lease-back option.

The Missing Link: A Simple Solution to Senior Home Selling How does life look in the seventh, eighth or ninth decade? As one enters this period of life, adorned with wrinkles, heirlooms and too much yard work, there are countless concerns to consider. Selling your home, or relying on your adult children to do so- in a pandemic-painted world- shouldn’t be one of them.

R

ob Perkins and sister Corinne Ross, the folks behind San Diego-based Senior Home Purchase Program (SHPP), know this all too well. After a decade of residential real estate investing, their personal experience revealed what was missing in this marketplace: a safe, simple and straightforward home selling program for seniors and their families. “We watched our grandparents reach the point of no longer being able to live alone,” said Rob. “We also saw the effort it took from our entire family to support them through the transition of selling long-time homes and lining up new residences. It’s a hard period of life that calls on family to become overnight experts in real estate, organizing, cleaning and caretaking.” When you add in selling a home during a global pandemic, it’s no easy task. “We founded SHPP in 2015 with the mission of offering seniors a simple way to transition into senior living,”

said Perkins. “In 2020, safety has become paramount to our operations. COVID-19 has changed the way residential real estate is consumed, and our process frees sellers from many risks, including showing their home to strangers,” said Perkins. The duo created a three-step process that rivals the traditional home sales process. Most notably, using SHPP eliminates the need for real estate agents, home preparation costs, and showings. SHPP helped Camille, the adult daughter of transitioning parents in Encinitas, who shared: “We contacted SHPP about my parent’s home of 35 years, which was ready for a full remodel and had many unfinished projects. It was hard for my parents to take the leap to sell, but they were treated very well by the SHPP team. There was minimal disturbance to their daily life, and that was so helpful. It was a short, smooth escrow, and we were thrilled when everything Rob laid out in the purchase offer, went through as planned.

26

With a traditional listing, the home seller typically needs to prepare the home – from cleaning to completing updates, repairs and staging – which can cost tens of thousands of dollars. At SHPP, homes are purchased in their current condition and the company pays for 100 percent of costs associated with the sale. An initial home visit allows SHPP to gather necessary data about the home. SHPP then copiously does their homework on the property and the market. A second meeting is scheduled where SHPP presents their absolute best offer on the home. “When presenting our offer, we illustrate how it compares to the alternative of selling on the open market”, said Ross. “Once the costs/fees are deducted from the alternative, our offer often makes the most sense.” As the company, which receives the majority of its customers by referral, expands into Orange County and other areas, they will continue to deliver on their promise to serve seniors with integrity and transparency. “We are in the business of helping people pilot an emotional and financially important decision, and we do not take this lightly,” said Ross. “We encourage our customers to discuss our no-pressure process with family, friends and trusted advisors before they make a decision.”

Lead-Free, Leak-Free Pipe Protection By Jody Robinson

It is safe to say that I know nothing about pipes. I know a little about drywall, and some about framing; my husband has his general contractor’s license so I’ve picked up a few nuggets of knowledge over the years - albeit in conversation, not in practice.

P

ipes, however, are a complete mystery. I have family who live on the East Coast, where pipes seem to burst with some degree of frequency in the winter, but that is the extent of my experience via six degrees of separation. Since our family moved into our “new” home in San Juan Capistrano a few years ago, we have since become something of an expert on experts: those who do and don’t know anything about pipes. There are a bunch of things I can now catch you up on: leaks, sprinkler lines, lead testing. But truly, all you need to know is this: In many cases, ePIPE can have your pipes restored the same day without displacing you from your home. Topping my list of folks I’d call expert, ePIPE has been in business since 1999. With over 40 international and US-based patents, the company has contracts with the US Department of Defense, several counties across the States, schools, HOA’s, and thousands of individual homeowners nationwide. Jason Houck, National Sales Director notes “twenty years ago this process was developed to be more convenient, less destructive, longer lasting, and healthier. Now it’s a patented, proven process used around the globe.” Traditional systems wreak havoc on a home, tearing up floors, walls, and ceilings. To get to the pipe, you have to get everything else out of the way: and then to replace the pipe, you have to remove what is there. “Instead of re-piping, we restore pipes in place. Many homes can be completed in a day, with the water going back on in a number of hours.”

Pool piping, fire sprinkler systems, water lines - ePIPE deals with it all. They’ll even test for lead and remediate as a LeadSmart® Service provider. Any number of factors can lead to corrosion in a system, often in as little as two years after installation. Any number of factors can lead to pinhole or slab leaks. So what happens next? If your pipes were simply failing due to changing water chemistry, perhaps you’re wondering if there is a better pipe? Turns out the restoration of your pressurized system can be as simple as drying, cleaning and applying ePIPE's patented epoxy coating. “The cleaning process prepares the internal pipe surface for proper bonding,” says Jason. “A bit like sanding before you paint.” In researching what ePIPE has to offer in terms of the process, I don’t see the word drilling, or destruction, or demolition anywhere. Taking care of

a problem once it begins is one thing, but ensuring that you won’t have that problem for years down the road is entirely different. Restored piping protects against corroding and pitting, in turn reducing copper and lead leaching. “Because there is no need to destroy walls, ceilings, or floors, you save a significant amount of money in reconstruction costs,” says Jason. “I’ll keep saying it: we do the work without the mess and expense.” Ranked in the top 1% of over 300,000 California contractors, ePIPE is here to ensure your pipes deliver the way they were made to. That’s really all I need to know.

South Coast Shutter and Shades

O

perating honestly and with integrity has served as the foundation for the continued success of the Laguna Niguel-based South Coast Shutter and Shades for over 32 years. Owners Tom and Donna Schuster launched their own company after realizing that “on our own we would be able to offer quality products in an honest environment to our customers, as well as servicing the products we sell.”

Tom and Donna, credit their success to date to the quality of customer service they and their team give their customers, which in turn creates a wonderful repeat and referral business. “Although there may be providers of similar products, there is no one that can match our superior customer service – from showing up on time, making precise measurements and flawless installations - and with a professional ‘can do’ attitude,” says Donna.

Specializing in custom shutters, blinds (mini, faux, wood, vertical), cellular shades, woven woods, plantation and security shutters and everything in between, Tom and Donna offer free in-home consultations for design as well as measuring, they always include free professional installation and prefer to bring all of the samples to each client’s home to go over the assorted styles and many color options to suit each home’s interior and its homeowner’s unique lifestyle.

Tom adds that “our pricing with unbeatable discounts, sales support and the fact that we offer our customers an in-house design team at no additional charge is the first step in setting us apart from our competition. I am proud to say that we have built a reputation in the business for having the highest quality, best beauty, fit and finish and value available. All of our products come with a lifetime warranty.”

“We listen to you and then incorporate your ideas with ours to design your custom shutters, blinds or shades,” says Tom. “Our portfolios and samples are very extensive, so you will be able to envision how your windows are going to look when complete."

A 5-Star Yelp rated company, South Coast Shutter and Shades boasts scores of glowing testimonials online, including Debora R of Laguna Niguel who writes "Donna and Tom are amazing! Great products, great prices, great service.I've used them twice for two different businesses and I could not be happier. Donna makes suggestions based on what I tell her

30

my needs are and she has been spot on with her recommendations. Installations by Tom are quick and easy. Highly recommended!" Another reviewer, Doug W. of Mission Viejo posted that "From the first call, I knew I was dealing with a reputable, experienced, HONEST company. Donna and Tom are absolute PROS and obviously take pride in their work … Their price was very competitive. Also, what they quote is what you pay - keep that in mind when talking to the "other guys" whose price seems to go up and up. All appointments including install were FAST. The installation was flawless. I had a question later that evening about my motorized shades and they called me back IMMEDIATELY. My impression is that I could call them 5 or 10 years from now and they would just as helpful."

Life. Organized. By Jody Robinson Classy Closets’ unique, custom solutions for the home and office can instantly double or even triple your storage space.

C

loset organization is something of an oxymoron at my house. Same goes for my home office. I actually do know where everything is in the stacks of paper that perpetually reside atop my desk, but good luck having anyone else make rhyme or reason of my filing “system.”

a desire to have your mess aesthetically addressed, Classy Closets will customize your work/life space with made-toorder cabinetry and organization systems for your home office, garage, bedroom, laundry room, pantry, media centers, wallbeds and more.

I’m clearly a candidate for the handiwork of a company like Classy Closets – if it’s a matter of function or simply

Think you can’t afford to bring in the professionals? Classy Closets, which has served all of Orange County and

San Diego since 2003, offers organization options for virtually every budget – from basic white melanine to solid wood cabinetry. “Nothing we do is cookie cutter,” says Company CFO Gary Pavitt. “Although Classy Closets is a franchise, we’re not governed by the rules that typically dictate processes of typical franchise operations – particularly with regard to the materials and mounting systems we use. What works in terms of style and function at a home in Tucson, for instance, wouldn’t necessarily translate to a house in Huntington Beach. So we have the freedom to customize our work to our client’s specific needs and desires.” Another differentiator is that Gary and his team manufacture their products right here in Southern California, which affords them the ability to offer their clients a broader range of product options at a level of quality that is “second to none.” And because they are “hands-on” from design consultation to manufacture and installation, Gary and his staff pride themselves on providing unparalleled customer service. “What’s really fun is having the ability to create the products in-house,” says Gary. “I really enjoy introducing new ways to make things better, bringing in new products and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry. We go out of our way to keep our customers satisfied … that’s what makes it all worthwhile. As in any business, your customers are golden and we’ve been very fortunate that a large percentage of our business is in referrals.” Repeat customers Marta and Mike Fowler of San Diego say that Classy Closets is a “dream company - one that not only delivers beautiful craftsmanship, but also that elusive quality

32

of excellent service. Every good cliché regarding their work applies.” “This is our second home that Classy Closets has refined to meet all our storage needs, from closets to garage, from bathroom storage to entertainment center. And they never try to oversell, giving honest recommendations for products, charging fair prices within reach,” says Marta. “Their creative solutions and impeccable workmanship combine to make functional pieces we love living with. We have only one warning: Classy Closets is addictive, and you will find yourself wanting to spread the good news.” In a letter to Gary’s business partner Kate Monaghan, Carlsbad-based Interior Designer Karen Wirrig echoes the Fowler’s sentiment and adds that “my new master closet is beautiful and your attention to detail is evident. I also want to commend your installation crew. They were on time, tidy, polite, and did excellent work … I will wholeheartedly recommend your company to all my clients. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.” Classy Closets 23024 Lake Forest Drive, Suite K Laguna Hills (949) 249-5600 www.classyclosets.com

oxy coatings can also be removed during this same process. “Despite the fact that Coatings Industry requires concrete to at least be diamond ground before installing a new coating system, many of my competitors will install their coatings right over raw or pressure washed concrete just to save a few bucks - I will never do that” says Paul.

It’s Not Epoxy, It’s SpartaFlex!

F

or nearly 40 years, southern California homeowners have used Epoxy for garage and industrial floor coating projects despite its tendency to yellow, it’s soft and easy to scratch surface and it’s tendency to be permanently damaged by the hot, high performance tires found on most cars in the OC area. Today OC homeowners don’t have to settle for Epoxy and all of its flaws anymore. SpartaFlex is an advanced, next generation 100% solids polyaspartic floor coating that gives your garage a beautiful finish that is 3x harder than epoxy, resists yellowing while also resisting permanent damage from hot tires. Perhaps best of all, SpartaFlex comes with a much better warranty than Epoxy. Perkins Custom Coatings has been installing SpartaFlex on OC garage floors for nearly 14 years and has completed over 9,000 floors during that period of time. Its CEO and owner, Paul Frankel is considered by many to be the most knowledgeable contractor in the local market. “Unlike many of our competitors, we strive to do an onsite assessment including a moisture test for every floor coating project we install and instead of using the ‘one size fits all’ approach, we develop a coating solution that we believe will last for decades not just for a few years.” Perkins uses only the most advanced surface preparation methods available and will either diamond grind or shot blast every floor that he installs. Old, failing, yellowed ep-

Perkins also is known for its professional and unique approach to repairing concrete cracks. “Anyone can slap some crack repair paste to cosmetically fix a crack” says Paul. A year later, when the concrete moves again and damages their brand new floor coating, the devastated homeowner will learn that this damage is not covered by the typical Epoxy warranty. “We are the only company that I know of that uses a ‘structural crack repair’ technique to fix cracks. The process is so effective we can offer our customers a warranty that can cover future damage from cracks!” says Paul. After the surface prep is completed, a very effective moisture control primer is applied to the concrete. “This is extremely important” says Paul because for many homes built in Socal before 2005, elevated moisture vapor levels in the garage concrete can have a detrimental impact on floor coatings. Paul does a fast and non-destructive moisture test for every one of the pre-2005 homes he visits and develops a unique installation plan for each home. For newer homes, Paul and his crew can use a basic primer that dries a bit faster allowing installation of a garage floor in as little as one day! The color chips that give the Perkins floor its legendary appearance are sandwiched between this primer and finish coat. Perkins carries the widest selection of colors and sizes in the market and uses a ‘full chip broadcast’, not a partial sprinkling of chips like many of its competitors. “The full chip broadcast gives the floor a consistent appearance and makes the floor much more durable and helps hide dirt better than the partial broadcast finish” says Paul. Finally, Perkins installs the SpartaFlex polyaspartic finish coat and the finished garage comes to life. “Epoxy & SpartaFlex floor coatings are virtually identical in appearance when they are first installed” says Paul. “However, when you will really begin to appreciate a SpartaFlex floor is a few months down the road when you would typically start to see problems develop with an Epoxy floor. If there was a better material on the market, I would be selling it, but there isn’t and that is why we love selling SpartaFlex.”

For more information or to see for yourself the advantages of SpartaFlex over Epoxy, you can call Perkins Custom Coatings, at 866-330-1DAY (1329) or visit their informative website at www.perkinscustomcoatings.com.

How Women Can Prepare For Retirement A practical financial checklist for the future. Provided by Ken Earwood

When our parents retired, living to 75 amounted to a nice long life, and Social Security was often supplemented by a pension. The Social Security Administration estimates that today’s average 65-year-old woman will live to age 86½. Given these projections, it appears that a retirement of 20 years or longer might be in your future.1,2 Are you prepared for a 20-year retirement? How about a 30-year or even 40-year retirement? Don’t laugh; it could happen. The SSA projects that about 33% of today’s 65-year-olds will live past 90, with approximately 14% living to be older than 95.2 Start with good questions. How can you draw retirement income from what you’ve saved? How might you create other income streams to complement Social Security? And what are some ways you can protect your retirement savings and other financial assets? Enlist a financial professional. The right person can give you some good ideas, especially one who understands the challenges women face in saving for retirement. These may include income inequality or time out of the workforce due to childcare or eldercare. It could also mean helping you maintain financial equilibrium in the wake of divorce or death of a spouse.

Invest strategically. If you are in your fifties, you have less time to make back any big investment losses than you once did. So, protecting what you have may be a priority. At the same time, the possibility of a retirement lasting up to 30 or 40 years will likely require a growing retirement fund.

Consider extended care coverage. Women have longer average life expectancies than men and can require significant periods of eldercare. Medicare is no substitute for extended care insurance; it only covers a few weeks of nursing home care, and that may only apply under special circumstances. Extended care coverage can provide a huge financial relief if the need arises.1,3

Claim Social Security benefits carefully. If your career and health permit, delaying Social Security can be a wise move. If you wait until full retirement age to claim your benefits, you could receive larger Social Security payments as a result. For every year you wait to claim Social Security, your monthly payments get about 8% larger.4
