Hello AND land! Can’t believe its the 2nd issue already. I can tell you, I’ve been busier than a mole’s plumber since February. Can I pick a fortnight to deliver newspapers or what? Strangely, almost liked my wife planned it, but it stopped raining the moment I stopped delivering, unlike her advice which has blessed me the whole time. But I know she has my best interests at heart, although I don’t know what that rubber hose was all about?

But the fact is I am actually having the time of my life once again. Delivering The AND Guide and getting the reaction has been er... overwhelming to be honest.

Pretty much everywhere as well.

(Although a couple of estate agents in a certain street in Winchester wont be seeing me again, “Crikey get over yourselves!” Lucky for them I didn’t have the rubber hose on me!) Everywhere else though it’s been as if I was delivering keys for handcuffs. I’ve had cups of coffee, cakes, kisses, life stories and even a full on embrace in front of applauding customers at a hairdressors in Portswood. Reading between very large lines it would appear that most of you share my opinion that the old place needs a bit of a shake up.

Nobody seems to know what’s going on generally. Most people think that nothings happening whereas, you can see from our humungous 9 page diary, there are actually

zillions of things to get involved in and many are free. So go for it! The more of us that attend these things, the more likely they’ll be repeated.

Anyway enough prattling from me (can’t you tell its the last bit and 3:47am?). I do hope you enjoy this edition. I’ve poured my heart and soul into it, supported by some very talented folk that share my passion for this sleepy old city (and of course you too Winchester... well mostly).

The first time I ever saw The Commitments I remember thinking how great it would be to be in a band like that.

Loads of talented musicians and singers playing music that everybody knows, loves and can dance to … it couldn’t get any better than that, could it?

Soul music cuts across all barriers and it brings joy to the lives of millions of people so when I heard of a new local band promising something along the lines of The Commitments I couldn’t wait to find out more. The fact that I used to be in a rock band with the drummer made it even more interesting on a personal level.

So I did. And they were great.

You’d never have known it was a debut gig and they had people up and dancing from the opening bars of the Bar Kays’ classic, Soul Finger.

The rest of the set included cracking versions of Otis Redding’s Hard To Handle and Try A Little Tenderness, Jackie Wilson’s Higher and Higher, Gimme Some Lovin’ from the Blues Brothers and the Northern Soul stomper, The Snake, originally by Al Wilson but belted out by lead singer Antony. There was an authentically tight rendition of the (mostly) instrumental stormer Pick Up The Pieces by the Average White Band, while the girls got in on the solo action with Jodi singing Wilson Pickett’s anthem, In The Midnight Hour, and Vanessa ripping up Dusty’s Son Of A Preacher Man.

Dan Stedman was just a baby when he first picked up the sticks and started drumming, his dad having been in groups for as long as he can remember. He was only 17 when we were in that band together when the rest of us were in our thirties …

Fast forward to today and Dan’s about to turn 30 and is now drummer for Strumpet Town, a ten-piece soul revue based in Southampton and Eastleigh. Combining members of previous local soul, ska and indie outfits like Bad Toad, 2Toned and Remote Control, their leader and trumpet maestro, Steve Moody, explained that the mission is “To blow the bloody roof off!”

With a clearly defined image and a well-honed sound, you can tell they mean business and the years of experience come across when you hear them live: they’re tight, they’re together and … well, they blow the bloody roof off !

There’s actually a sprinkling of youth in there too, with the youngest member, Jodi Bore being 20, while the most “mature” member is (only) 50, namely sax player, Jim Cutts.

There were months of rehearsals ahead of their first gig at The Progressive Club in Eastleigh on 8 March, many of them filmed and uploaded to YouTube. That shows a certain degree of not just confidence but also professionalism, as if throw-

I’d like to see them on a bigger stage, both figuratively and literally.

Not only do I think they would be perfect for anything from a grand wedding to a corporate awards night, but I also think they actually need more room to move. The singers Antony, Jodi and Vanessa were bursting to let rip at the Pro and you get the impression the horns want to be swinging in time to the rhythm and blues they’re playing too.

Somewhere like Talking Heads or The Brook would be good, but a proper theatre would be even better.

TRIBUTE TO A TRIBUTE

CALL ME BLONDIE There are tribute bands and there are tribute bands. Currently being a tribute to famous soundsters is one of the safest ways to carve a living as a musician or singer. It's also one of the easiest. Jimmy average the pub crooner that can't get a gig to a sober audience for the price of a second hand CD, dons a white suit and a charity shop wig and miraculously he's Elvis commanding the dubious attention of the musically deaf at toffs balls "In't 'e good... hic" with Michael Kackedson, Stung and Murder and the Umbrellas.

On the other side of the stage are the real thing, preferring to play their self penned tunes, the result of a lifetime's dedication and hard work, but aware that the noises most likely to regularly bring enough money to pay the bills are familiar ones.

Yes of course its market forces and musicians are used to that. In my short lifetime as a working musician I've had to endure the challenges of Disco, the all encompassing synth groups, followed by the dreaded karaoke and now a mixture of backing tracks and tributes which more often than not are the same thing.

It's pretty much karaoke again but in fancy dress.

So... having slagged off one side of the tribute market let me now endorse the other by introducing Southampton tribute band Call Me Blondie. This is a band of the highest quality formed from some of the most experienced and talented players in the region. A group of musicians so tight that true live music connoisseurs would travel to see them anyway. Too poor to attend

toffs balls and hopefully not musically deaf - me not them - they also deliver the main thing I want from a tribute... a true taste of the original artist. Not just the same songs, I want to feel the passion, the stage presence, hear and see the music played skillfully... and live! CMB deliver on all counts. Of course its not the real Blondie, but shut your eyes and it could be. Open your eyes and yeah its not Debbie Harry, but damn she's good! Within minutes you'll be challenging your senses that the show isn't every bit as great as the band itself. By the end you'll be wondering if they're actually better? And the best bit for me? The band are all Blondie fans. They love the music... clearly.

Blondie is actually a great subject for a proper band, flirting as it does between disco, pop, rap and reggae while retaining a basic style as a new wave band. And with a set list that includes 17 UK top 20 hits and just as well known album tracks it's hard to imagine a night where CMB isn't the perfect combination for music fan or the harmonically challenged.

So forgive me if I started with a bit of a rant, but a distinction had to be made between the Loada Vandross and Call Me Blondie's of this world. I’ve seen and worked with a lot of tributes and its fair to say I avoid more than I see. At the beginning I said “one of the easiest”. Well it is, to be poor. These guys work hard to be this good... and it shows!

THE RAILWAY is Winchester’s only music pub but it punches way above its weight as a small venue in a small city.

It’s the place where you can get really close to your musical heroes. But now, whether by chance or intention, it seems to have homed in on a unique specialty: people who used to be in famous bands. I’m guessing there may be a lot of factors in play here. It’s probably expensive to take full bands on the road nowadays. There’s almost certainly more money in it for an individual to perform the hits on his / her own. Maybe they need the occasional break from colleagues. And solo acoustic music is back in vogue. Whatever the reason, it’s little venues like the Railway that benefit.

I remember, just a few months ago, being completely star struck to find myself inches away from Grant Hart, drummer of the great Hüsker Dü. He was playing an acoustic guitar and was gratifyingly excellent. It was in the Attic, the Railway’s acoustic room, and there were maybe twenty people there. And there are plenty more moments like that coming up, some of them frankly surreal.

After Martin Stevenson (Daintees) and Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab) comes Roddy Woomble of Idlewild on April 23.

But wait! The very next day advertises The Birthday Suit (exIdlewild guitarist, it says). Let’s hope they’re still friends - we wouldn’t want any car park confrontations. April and May see Dan Stuart (Green On Red), Johnny Bramwell (I Am Kloot) and Colin Vearncombe (Black).

And then it gets a bit crazy as the Americans pile in. May 26 features Marc Ford of the Black Crowes and then, most shockingly of all, comes Nick Oliveri of Queens Of The Stone Age (June 5). In your local pub! You couldn’t make it up.

I’m a bit of an oldie, so my biggest thrill will be on JULY 6, which features Ian McLagan, ex of the Small Faces, The Faces and The Rolling Stones. Stadium rock and mega festivals, forget them. Up close and personal is where it’s at. www.railwaylive.co.uk

Low interest rates might be great news for borrowers but they can have a devastating effect on savers’ long term wealth.

Furthermore, with inflation tending to run in excess of interest rates, the buying power of your money is being eroded, even though the value of your capital might appear safe.

Therefore, you need to keep a close eye on the interest you are earning.

Nowhere is this more apparent than with cash Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs).

According to Moneyfacts, the average long term fixed rate cash ISA offered a rate of 2.41% in April 2013, compared with 3.58% in April 2012.

However, available rates of around 3% available suggest consumers are not taking the time to shop around.

It is good practice to retain some cash in an easy access deposit account to ensure you can cover unforeseen emergencies and short term necessities. However, there is no reason to tie up all your cash holdings in this type of account. Research by Skipton Building Society, for example, found more than 75% of pensioners with an ISA never withdraw money from their account, and interest rates can be significantly higher for those willing to sacrifice some flexibility.

Life’s hectic and it is all too easy to forget about your ISAs until the end of the tax year is looming. Rather than waiting until the eleventh hour, however, take the time to shop around now for the best possible home for your money.

TAX EFFICIENT OPTIONS As life expectancy in the UK continues to increase, you may be considering how best to save for your retirement.

Pensions are often considered the principal solution yet ISAs can be useful additional tool. Pensions and ISAs are taxed differently – pension payments will qualify for upfront tax rebates at your highest rate of income tax, but the income you receive is taxable. ISA contributions

come from taxed income but withdrawals are tax free.

The question is often not whether an ISA or pension is better, but how to structure a portfolio using both.

2013/14 LIMITS FOR ISAS Allowances for Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) have continued to rise for the current tax year, providing a welcome additional incentive for UK savers. During the 2013/14 tax year, investors can save up to £11,520 in an ISA, which represents a rise of 2.2% over the previous year.

The maximum ISA contribution of £11,520 can be invested entirely in a stocks & shares ISA. Up to half the total amount – £5,760 – can be saved in a cash only ISA. Investors who choose to put less than that amount in their cash ISA can invest the balance of their allowance in a stocks & shares ISA. According to the Investment Management Association, net ISA inflows in the 12 months to April 2013 reached £1.1bn although research by the trade body has suggested investors would save more money in ISAs if the allowance were increased. Meanwhile, according to HM Revenue & Customs, around 14.6 million individuals subscribed to ISAs in the last tax year, some-

POSTSCRIPT Chancellor George Osborne unveiled a "dramatic" change in the ISA system in the recent Budget.

During his Budget speech, Mr Osborne said the annual Isa allowance will be increased from £11,520 to £15,000 1 July.

The increased limit will apply to a single Isa, which combines the current Cash and Stocks & Shares wrappers.

This improvement means that cash and other investments can be effectively managed under the one tax advantageous regime of the ISA and we expect increased investment through these vehicles.

TOM CANNING What’s New Pussycat?

My, my, my and all that, Tom Canning is, without doubt, the most accomplished Tom Jones tribute act in the world - the fact that he’s in demand across the globe is testament to that. From his home town of Southampton to places like Bangkok, Bangladesh and the USA, Tom’s worked with all the greats, appeared on TV in the first Stars in Your Eyes and is endorsed by people who should know, including entertainers like Roger Daltrey and Kenny Lynch.

Football’s Andy Gray and Lawrie McMenemy have described him as ‘an absolutely brilliant act’, while actors Dennis Waterman and Warren Clarke, considers him ‘simply the best’. Of course, meeting the man himself at the Bournemouth International Centre and getting his seal of approval tops all the plaudits and makes Tom the pussycat to be reckoned with in the Tribute business.

Tom’s currently shuttling between stages in Spain and Cyprus, but will be heading back to the green, green grass of Southampton when he plays at the Botleigh Grange Hotel on 20th June.

Southampton Hospital Charity aims to enhance the world class facilities provided at Southampton General Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).

UHS provides services to some 1.3 million people living in Southampton and South Hampshire plus specialist services including neurosciences, cardiac services and children’s intensive care to more than three million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands.

Providing these services costs a jaw dropping £1.16 million per day!

Donations allow the hospital to buy equipment, fund research and provide better facilities that would otherwise be unaffordable under the NHS. Through public support, the charity funds projects large and small across all wards and departments to improve patient care.

25 April: Gourmet dinner by chef Lenny Carr-Roberts Join Southampton Hospital Charity for a very special gourmet dinner at the Bugle Inn in Twyford thanks for chef-patron Lenny CarrRoberts Tickets for this exclusive dinner are £140 a head for the evening which will include a fabulous seven course taster meal starting with champagne/canapés and finishing with cheese/port.

The menu has been specifically devised for the evening and is based on one of Lenny’s award dinning Michelin star menus. The ticket price includes appropriately selected wine with each course.

Along with Lenny kindly donating his entire restaurant and time, most of the ingredients have also been generously donated by Lenny’s local suppliers including Jody Schecker’s Laverstoke Park Farm, Premier Fish, Lyburn Farmhouse Cheese Makers, Chef’s Delight, Danebury Vineyard and

Molson Coors and so the vast majority of the proceeds will go toward the Percy’s Pals fund of Southampton Hospital Charity.

17 MAY: New Forest Rotary Club Horse or Cycle Ride Join the PLANETS Charity team (helping people affected by Pancreatic Liver and Neuroendocrine Tumours) for the New Forest Rotary Club horse and cycle ride starting in Burley Park, Burley at 10am adjacent to Queens Head.

A fun day out for all the family either on horseback, as a cyclist, or on foot.

Routes are mainly off-road through open forest; horses and walkers about 8 miles, cyclists a choice of about 8 or 16 miles.

MAKE A WILL FORTNIGHT CMH Charity is holding it’s second Make a Will Fortnight which will run from 19th - 30th May 2014. During this time, local solicitors have agreed to waive their fees for writing a limited number of basic wills in return for a donation to the hospice.

Suggested minimum donations are £75 for a single will and £100 for a pair of mirror wills. More detailed wills

may incur an additional charge so please discuss this with your solicitor before your will is completed.

LOCAL ARTIST RELEASES Barry Upton Our resident pop guru Barry is a multi international hit songwriter/ producer/performer. Initially a front singer with chart toppers Brotherhood Of Man, and then working with a multitude of household names including being a creator of the lovable pop outfit STEPS, penning their massive hit 5678.

Barry is a former co-host with Martin Perry of the AND Magazine Show on Radio Hampshire and currently a TV & radio presenter and producer.

PROTECTION & MP FREES If you are going to become an ‘Artiste’ and produce a product to sell, be it yourself or a creation/production or even just an original song, the first thing you must do is PROTECT your intellectual property. Now, this doesn’t need to be so intellectual (God knows I’ve written some rubbish that’s gone on to be hits) but it does need to be original and will not infringe anyone else’s original property.

What I’m trying to say is, why spend all that time and effort creating something new when someone else can come along and nick it. You might as well throw your hard earned money at them because that’s what it comes down to.

This is what’s known as COPYRIGHT and don’t listen to those who say they can ‘copy all right’ as another term for this is piracy.

Now hands up all of you who have illegally downloaded an Mp3, video, film or otherwise for free? Own up... I’m waiting? There ya go… ALL OF YOU! Shame on society for ruining the way we used to pay for our music and suchlike so that the original creator got paid correctly for his/her work. The internet and clever computers are partly to blame but moreso the user, who disgracefully steals an original work for their own personal entertainment.

Copyright is a legal concept, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, with the intention of enabling the creator of the intellectual property (e.g. the writer of a song or the musicians on a record) to receive compensation for their work for financial gain.

Even though the world, and his wife are illegally downloading original works for free, there are still many ways of obtaining paid for royalties from the many companies and

non profit making organisations around the world who will collect monies owed to you from TV, radio, film licenses etc. etc.

The best way to protect your intellectual property from being stolen is to register each title with a publisher who will go to the ends of the earth to make sure every penny that can be possibly collected will arrive in your grubby hands, less their commission or agreed percentage. The big rule of thumb here is 50% of something is far better than 100% of nothing. This doesn’t mean you have to give away 50% but you get the idea.

In my case I did give 50% away to a film placement company in Los Angeles after they licensed one of my songs in a low budget film.

However , this film ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ went on to become a double Oscar winning film and became a big ‘box office’ success globally.

Without that publisher I would have received zilch, but over 7 years on I’m still receiving royalties from DVD sales and pay per view TV. If a publisher is going to ‘exploit’ your material for financial gain, then give away a reasonable percentage as they are earning you money so give them an incentive.

If, on the other hand, they are just a collector for you, as is the case with my sub publisher who administers my own publishing company which owns nearly all of my original works, then 10% is a fair remuneration for their skill in tracking down what you may be owed worldwide.

If you do sign a publishing agreement, always put a time limit on the deal as I did with Pete Waterman’s ‘All Boys Music’ and my STEPS hit 5678 which was to last for 10 years.

Therefore in 2007, the song reverted back to me for 100% and now my sub publisher collects the ongoing royalties and licenses for me.

If you feel you just want to protect your creation without finding a publisher, just save it on your computer or upload it to You Tube. It will become date stamped so you can prove you came up with the idea first in a court of law.

So, enjoy your creatabilty and always remember wherever necessary USE PROTECTION!

COAST - TURNING STONE Coast are a Southamptonbased celtic rock band with an interesting and unique sound. To be fair should really be under the heading ‘world famous local artists’ as the group have worldwide fanbase and constantly tour the globe playing to audiences of many thousands. That said, band leader Paul Eastham hails from Southampton as does drummer Steve Lawrence, bassist Al Stone, and percussionist Chris Barnes so here goes.

Not normally a fan of the genre, the first thing I noticed was the scale of the music.

This isn't a pub band with penny whistles and a violin: they're much grander than that and create soundscapes that are as big as a Scottish sky on a clear day and as lush as the rolling green hills of Ireland.

With elements of stadium rock, classical, prog, serious pop and Americana, Coast are part Runrig, part Saw Doctors,

part Pink Floyd, part Coldplay ... but all heart. Their songs are dramatic and original, the production is rich and powerful - yet restrained when needed - and the result is simply wonderful.

For me, rock music is all about getting the balance right. It's easy to sound like bands from the past and absolutely inevitable given the limitations of the format, so to be successful there needs to be something different, something to tell you apart from the rest. Coast have the knack and use just enough piano, just enough strings, just enough of the traditional celtic instruments to let you know where their roots lie, but have enough about them to borrow from the genre, but ultimately sound only like Coast all the time, and that's an incredibly hard trick to pull off.

ately-titled song, again starting off gently but rising in force until it sounds like a celtic take on Boston, with plenty of driving guitar and Hammond organ FIELDS OF BLOOD is simply magnificent, with soaring harmonic vocals and brilliant guitar work again Locals will love THE DOCKS OF MY HOME TOWN, a mournful lament for times gone by when we actually had docks we could be proud of - there's strong elements of Big Country in there too, which lift the song to "lighters in the air" level THE RECKLESS ENGINEER is - astonishingly - about Brunel. An odd choice

Here at The And Guide we’re occasionally sent a snippet of information about a local artist or a link to a clip from someone saying “You’ve got to hear this!” Well, this is one of those times and as I write this it’s almost a “Stop Press” moment: Farehambased vocalist DiElle has brought out her first single, Fearless, ahead of an April album release … and that’s about all I know at this point.

The single is on soundcloud, so just search for the title and you’ll find it.

It’s an interesting song: ostensibly it’s a piano ballad, rather like a couple of songs I reviewed in the last issue, but when you listen more closely you’ll see there’s a lot more to it than that. Rather fittingly for this month's issue of The And Guide, there’s a strong classical element running through Fearless, with a cello featuring quite high up in the mix.

for a song you might think, but it works.

I've seen some of their performances on YouTube and been very impressed so I'm hoping to catch them live soon and funnily enough, they're playing The Bugle in Botley on 31 May. Yes really.

It's a fave pub of front man Paul Eastham where they've become friendly with the music lovin' landlords Derek and Dave and a certain well known trio from these parts (who are there every 3rd Wednesday). It's a free gig and I'm definitely going ... see you there !

The lyrics are heartfelt and honest as DiElle looks at how inspirational the subject of the song is to her and the strings play nicely against that, creating a strangely uplifting sound rather than the more typically mournful tones evoked by that particular instrument.

The vocals reminded me of Jennifer Rush singing her big hit, The Power Of Love.

Though not quite as powerful, there’s a fantastic tremolo quality evident when DiElle really lets rip which gives her a rather unique style, especially for this genre. The song itself is strong with a good melody and the vocal coupled with the strings really make it memorable.

I’d like to hear more of DiElle’s material and hopefully carry out a full review of the album for the next edition of The And Guide.

BREAKING INTERNATIONAL ARTIST

NATALIA POSNOVA she’s a kind of magic

Classical music has long been something of a niche genre, despite several attempts to commercialise it over the years.

Not since the mid-twentieth century has it been anywhere near the mainstream, typically only resonating with the general public when specific pieces are used in advertising and on tv shows.

Think Morse and his love of Opera, or Frasier Crane’s snobby attitude to anything that wasn't classical. Of course, that’s part of the problem right there. The fact that many people think it’s too highbrow or that they won’t understand it or simply that it sounds, odd. To younger ears, anything without guitars or electronic beats sounds remarkably different. Then there’s the fact that most pieces are at least several minutes (or in the case of Wagner, hours) long, apart from Chopin's Minute Waltz, of course. You’ll most probably know that particular work as the theme tune to BBC Radio 4’s longrunning “Just A Minute” show, even if you don’t think you know it by name, which brings us neatly to another problem suffered by classical music: with such an enormous catalogue going back centuries, there are so many composers, so many songs, sonatas and symphonies that it’s difficult to know where to start.

Having worked in record shops for many years, I know first-hand how daunting it can be for anyone to dip a toe in the water of the classics.

And yet we all know and love some classical music, even if it’s just a movie soundtrack or something from an old advert.

How about those 70s Old Spice ads with the sea crashing into the beach ?

That’s Orff’s Carmina Burana.

Or Bach’s Air On A G-String used in the Hamlet campaign from the same period ?

Everyone knows the Hovis advert with the lad struggling down the cobbled hill, but did you know that’s an extract from Dvorak’s Symphony No.9 ?

One of the most famous examples of classical crossing over into mainstream culture is perhaps The Three Tenors singing Puccini’s Nessun Dorma for the Italia ’90 World Cup. For a while, the world fell back in love with the genre and soon opera was everywhere, and in fact it led to a massive uptake in interest of the entire classical canon throughout the nineties and beyond. You only have to think about the likes of Bryn Terfel, Russell Watson and Katherine Jenkins to see how the trend has continued to the present day, albeit on a slightly lesser scale.

There have been some very successful attempts to meld rock music with classical over the past forty years, too. Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds was a phenomenal triumph not only of music but also in taking a literary giant in HG Wells and bringing his work to a whole new audience. More recently, Metallica released an album entitled “S & M” in which the band played along with a full orchestra. Rick Wakeman’s never been afraid to experiment with anything, be it music, fashion or comedy and he not only dabbled with the legend of King Arthur, but also created a classical show based on the Jules Verne masterpiece, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth. Many years later, his some-time band, Yes, actually went on tour with a forty-piece orchestra simply because Wakeman himself couldn’t commit to the shows in person. What better way to replace one person than with forty others ?

I actually went and was blown away hearing the band’s already classicallyinfluenced back catalogue really come to life with the extra instrumentation. In truth, it was 41 musicians to replace the one, as Yes hired a session keyboard player anyway just to be on the safe side.

Another rock group clearly influenced by classical music was Queen. Given the astonishing vocal

ranges both Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor were blessed with, it was no surprise as the band evolved to hear them become ever more theatrical in their sound.

Which leads us seamlessly towards the present day and the work of Russian pianist extraordinaire, Natalia Posnova.

As one of the pre-eminent classical musicians in Europe, Ms Posnova holds the post of docent at the Hochshule für Musik in Dresden, Germany where she studied following her initial schooling at the Rimsky-Korsakoff Conservatory in St.Petersburg. As well as achieving astonishing results at university, Natalia has also won several international awards and garnered a wealth of positive press and industry interest throughout her career … which is about to take a very different direction. Rather than concentrating on the works of Mozart, Beethoven and Prokofiev, Ms Posnova had turned her attentions to messrs Mercury, May, Taylor and Deacon. While they may sound like a suburban solicitors, they are collectively known of course as Queen, the grandest of the grand when it comes to rock music.

As one of the greatest rock bands of all time, their music lends itself particularly well to classical reinterpretation not only because of Freddie Mercury’s long-held interest in the genre, but also because Brian May – like many worldclass guitarists - was classically trained on piano as well as the acoustic sixstring. Like Yes, there are strong elements of progressive rock in their sound, too. Unlike Yes, they didn’t focus solely on the short-lived subgenre, but the layering of melodies and arrangements is something which is evident throughout their career and that makes it easier to “pick apart” for anyone looking to remodel their songs.

Natalia Posnova has already created quite a storm in Europe with her stunning takes on some lesser-known Queen numbers, such as Don’t Try So Hard and Stone Cold Crazy, which has recently enjoyed a high-profile video release to much acclaim. Initially it was her covers of Who Wants To Live Forever? And Flash that caught people’s attention.

One person in particular - Brian May himself - was so impressed he went on record by stating:

“I have seriously, in all these years, never seen or heard anything like this. To see this amount of beauty, talent, innovation and pure bravura in one shot is astounding. You all have to see her interpretation of FLASH.” Brian May Natalia is now working on a complete album of Queen covers, even to the extent of enlisting the help of Freddie Mercury’s long-standing PA and confidant, Peter Freestone. Given the blessing of two of the most important people in and around the band itself, this augers well for the prospects of the album and for Posnova’s own career, which already stellar could yet go stratospheric at this rate.

There’s a real bravado about her playing that elevates it from the usual, more “mechanical” classicalby-numbers style you sometimes hear. It’s a signature sound, one that you instantly know is her before you even catch sight of the appropriately outlandish heeled boots, revealing outfits and glamour make-up once you notice her for the first time, rather than the music she’s playing.

Brian loves it and I’m sure Freddie would’ve done too I can only imagine how good it would’ve been to see the three of them on stage together, performing extended

versions of Queen’s greatest hits as they riffed off one another.

One can dream. In the meantime, you can enjoy the songs in a whole new way when the album comes out.

When asked what her immediate plans are for the future?

“Having just completed two new arrangements, I am working on getting the orchestral parts written.” says Natalia.

“I am also in the preliminary stages of planning a tour to start early 2015 and Southampton is definitely on the agenda. Your editor Martin showed me a little while we were on my recent tour with Casio," playfully adding "I don’t think he would forgive me if I didn’t try to organise a concert there.”

Rosalind Fountain talks to 17 year old Pammie Moore about her journey from talent contestant to supporting act for Sinitta.

When did you decide you wanted to become a singer?

As a small child I was lively and assured and used to pretend I was a pop star, but around the age of 11 I lost all my confidence. When I was 14 my mother suggested I enter a talent contest to help my confidence. I was very reluctant, but decided to give it a go. I'm so glad I did, because that's when everything changed.

And in a very short time you went from talent contestant to being selected as a support artist for 80's pop diva Sinitta.

That was an amazing experience. I had a brilliant time and Sinitta was very complimentary about my singing, which was a huge boost.

What sort of songs do you like to sing?

I like to be versatile. I've been told Adele and Amy Winehouse type songs suit me, but I listen to and learn from every genre, including Frank Sinatra, Jake Bugg, Lil Wayne, The Beatles, Nirvana, One Direction - very varied.

How do you see your future in music?

I'd like to continue writing and singing. My sister Catherine and I write together - she writes lyrics and I create the music on my piano.

And you've just recorded your first E.P.?

I've been recording at River Studios in Southampton, the biggest recording studio outside London. They've produced many successful artists including Birdy, Mark Hill, Yazz and many others, so it has been very exciting.

What do you do in your leisure time, apart from your music?

I'm a bit of an internet nerd. I carry out research into aliens and the supernatural, which I find fascinating. I do believe aliens may exist, and if they have music I imagine it might have an other-wordy harp-like sound.

So, back to earth - where would you like to perform locally?

There are some great venues in Southampton, and I'd like to perform in all of them. But the Concorde Club has a special place in my heart as that's where it all started.

With recent controversy over young stars behaving badly, do you think they have a responsibility to be role models, or is it just about the music?

If the target audience is very young, then yes I do think you have a responsibility, but parents should also ensure children are not exposed to anything unsuitable.

So we are not likely to see you "Twerking" in your music video?

Anyone who has seen me attempting those moves will know there's no chance of that!

Well, you’d better be connected or you’ll be waiting tables till you’re old and grey.

It all seemed so easy twenty years ago. Shoot a few good shorts (which I did), win a bunch of awards (which I did), sell to broadcasters (which I did), then direct features (which I didn’t), make a few million, buy an island, three or four native concubines and a dozen kids racing around… and then, then… all too soon; it’s all too late, ‘real’ life gets in the way.

My problem was lust I think. I took my eye off of the Oscar and gave up my Hollywood quest for more down-to-earth pursuits which meant seeking regular employment. You can’t have a social-life ‘and’ write ‘and’ make movies, there’s just no time. So, I erected steel for the major oil companies, sold advertising space for Southern Newspapers Plc and regional magazines (writing advertorial when the opportunity arose). I riggedup CCTV systems, became the installation manager, then the head of customer care before running the international sales team. That was a great job, 40K, bonuses, company sports car, etc and I gave it up at the turn of the century to produce one short for Meridian Broadcasting (and I’d do it again today, cos it’s fun, it’s what I did best, it’s all I want to do)…

A year of solid filmmaking followed and then things started to trail off. Meridian had been sold to Carlton and that was the end of our facilities. I became a copywriter and irked out a good living for a while, scribing for high profile music industry professionals before writing for ‘And’ Magazine in the mid ‘Noughties’ and later driving a lorry for DHL Argos (very badly I must add). I shot a few commercials- one for Pepsi, that was cool-fizzin’ and then I had major knee surgery and drifted out to convalesce in the US.

It was while in America during 2010/11 that I took a punt and blew my last $50 on entering one of my old screenplays (Hell’s Gate – The Risen) for competition at the L.A Film Festival. Thing is, I won! Well, I won a prize… this led to serious interest and promises of big bucks again and suddenly I was back in the game. The problem was that the ‘big bucks’ were more like casino chips… not worth a damn outside the building! We had interest from a good sales agent (distributor) thoughbut they wanted us to drop the budget from £3.5M to £2.8M and that’s when the bogus money evaporated leaving us in peril.

You will be able to get a job at the BBC. 2. You will decide that archaeology is more appealing and go and dig holes for a living.

I should’ve been down I guess- but I wasn’t, I’m not upset at all- after all, ‘they’re’ gonna back me (smiley face)…

This is when the Universe usually creeps up behind me and I get a sucker-punch that sends me flying back into a great big pile of obscurity… we’ll see. I’m 47, if I do this right I could still make pictures for another thirty years and that’s the kind of attitude one has to have or simply just lay down and die.

When I set out on this mad adventure I didn’t know anybody. It was daunting, sometimes Hell but mostly the most exciting and amazing time of my life.

My advice to you- oh inspired and aspiring young filmmakers… this is an age where experience counts for little it seems, HR department girls are like doubleheaded serpents- their twofaces guard the door… only the educated may enter. I

to be a ‘runner’ which is literally at the bottom of the bizbut where better than to learn the trade and most importantly- make contacts?

Keep your mouth shut, do whatever you’re told, don’t be late, learn a few commonly used phrases, avoid drugs (you won’t be able to afford them), sleeping with the producer is a bad idea- they won’t want you on the next shoot… seriously- keep your nose clean and maybe you’ll be invited onto the next gig… eventually you’ll be the Production Coordinator or an Assistant Director and you’re then on track to produce… otherwise- there are incredibly well paid jobs in all departments. Cameraperson and Cinematographer are very well paid, as are SPFX Supervisors, Gaffers, Sound Recordists, even the Sparks (electricians) can get serious wedges…

If you can make it happenit is the greatest job on the planet… and that applies to any role in any department… the competition is high- you want it?

BOOKS ... red & rit Isn’t it great to have The AND Guide back? Isn’t it great to have some books red and rit about again?

I’ll take that as a yes as we begin with yet another double. This time writer Christopher Fowler, please step forward with your offerings. First up comes the eleventh novel in the hugely Bryant and May mystery series. THE BLEEDING HEART (Bantam Press £16.99) is a tale steeped in the history of London.

Bodysnatchers, a funeral parlour to make you wish it was daylight twenty four hours a day, all investigated to try and discover the legend of The Bleeding Heart. To cap it all the seven famous ravens from the secure fortress of the Tower of London have disappeared, stolen? You know what they say if its goodbye to the ravens, the nation falls. This tale and the ten other books in the series are wonderful page turners.

from the smart phone and curl up with a Peculiar Crimes Unit mystery.

When Bryant and May were just brand names covering small cardboard boxes housing matches, Christopher Fowler worked in the British film industry which was, when he started in the late 1970’s situated almost solely in Wardour Street. Passionate about film he arrives with high ideals and big ideas but soon discovers the cold grubby rain soaked light of day very quickly. The Industry is on its knees financially and creatively and doesn’t look like standing up and smelling the muddy instant coffee anytime soon. What to do? To find out I recommend that you read FILM FREAK (Bantam £7.99). Fowler’s journey though his decades in the business is to be cherished, bringing back the low budget lifestyle of the young and the

desperate. Fowler’s career blossoms when he joins forces with good friend Jim Sturgeon to form the film advertising agency The Creative Partnership which is still going great guns today.

It was a partnership that eventually made it to Cannes and Los Angeles. However it is the early years that imprint the book and the love Fowler has for the genre that forms the backbone for this delightfully spicy memoir as he creates a B movie world for all to love. To conclude, I will certainly look at Alien in a different light now. When Fowler was working as a copywriter, he wrote the now world famous tagline “In Space, no one can here you scream.” Perhaps he had just seen Carry on Emmanuel?!

David Sedaris is a humorist par excellence.

Don’t take my word for it, just check out his latest collection of writings, LET’S EXPLORE DIABETES WITH OWLS (Abacus £8.99) a curious title if ever there was one. These essays follow the similar autobiographical anecdotal style of previous volumes as one follows Mr. Sedaris on his travels through life with a savagely humorous bent covering health (mostly his), politics, having dental work done not to mention a

very witty piece on living with your Greek Grandmother after she has been hit by a truck. For this he takes us back to his childhood where I sense he is at his most comfortable, as if to purge some of the more painful ghosts of the past especially the tricky and uncompromising relationship with his father. Despite the spectres of the past, there are many laughs to be had from this collection, one word of warning, best not to dispose of any lucozade bottles or crisp packets in hedgerows especially if you are travelling Suffolk way.

Depression is an illness. It is an illness that is treated in sound bites by the media, only usually referred to or discussed when a well known personality refers to “their struggles”. For those precious few minutes Depression becomes the most important thing in the world, the illness

is taken very seriously until the next commercial break leading into important news about the latest reality show.

Then all forgotten, until the next time. Two fine ambassadors of the illness who have never shirked from their often life threatening battles with this crippling disease of the mind are Stephen Fry and Alastair Campbell. However, one person determined to be heard and will not let even the most insipid of interviewers detract her from the forcefulness and passion of her message is Ruby Wax; a sufferer from depression herself which over time, has seen her being institutionalised because of the severity of the breakdown. She began with a Stage Show Out of Her Mind, now renamed and revamped as SANE NEW WORLD which coincidentally is the title of her book (Hodder & Stoughton £8.99). In between

she obtained a masters degree from Oxford University in Mindfulness- based Cognitive Therapy. Well enough of the background, what about the book? Just buy it and read it. One in four of us have mentally unravelled. Depression is the latest taboo that has people turning away often uttering the phrase “pull yourself together.” Ruby has gone on record as saying she is not the face of depression, she wants to communicate what is wrong with all of us. Be mindful and not too busy… Read this book, we need to understand.

Mango Thai Tapas Bar & Restaurant 27 PORTSWOOD ROAD, SOUTHAMPTON SO17 2ES The first few days after the clocks go forward is always a time for celebration, Spring is definitely in the air and we are all hopefully springing forward with extra spring in our individual steps enjoying the daylight hours that are hanging around that little bit longer slowly but surely guiding us to the delights of summertime.

What better way to celebrate the end of winter than a meal out! Sure, it was a Monday and technically a school night but with homework done Cook junior and I went off for a drive to explore, not knowing where we would end up. Sometimes it is good to get slightly away from the city. In the centre of Southampton you can get virtually anything you want culinary wise but sometimes it is good to go slightly off the beat and track and as we were driving though Portswood, a little place caught our eye.

The first thing that strikes about Mango on the Portswood Road is the outside, the main entrance is almost church like and once through the wooden doors you are greeted by a cosy intimate atmosphere with the walls displaying a collage of colours and textures in traditional Thai style. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11.am until late and we arrived at 5.pm traditionally a quiet time of day so we had the choice of tables and as we hadn’t booked that was an unexpected bonus. We tucked ourselves into a corner by the window having been immediately welcomed and given the food and drinks menus.

As we looked through the colourful menus I had to bear in mind that I was with Cook junior who is in the full fresh burst of adolescence experiencing the hormonal growth spurts that could leave any passing restaurateur quivering in fear when appetite expectations are discussed.

Clearly a starter was the first order of the evening! Mango prides itself on offering variety of them and heavily promotes their Thai Tapas as being served in “the traditional way” emphasising the use of fresh ingredients to get the balance of tastes right which was certainly an intriguing little bit of menu speak that greeted us as we began to make our selections. This was helped by the already delivered freshly cooked prawn crackers. Oh yes, plenty of choice and I can never resist a little bit of Dim Sum when the opportunity arises so I was soon tucking in to the homemade minced pork and prawn dumplings with chilli and garlic sauce. Cook junior looked enviously at my starter as he got to grips with his spicy fishcakes this time with a sweet and spicy sauce. Envy is a tricky thing to overcome but I usually find that emotion is easily quashed with the sentence “Would you like to try a little bit?” One dumpling and one fish cake swapped plates.

dles, fish, steaks all waiting to be served in that traditional Thai way with the ever present bowl of noodles or rice waiting in the wings.

Cook junior was in curry mode and opted for the Massaman curry, you know the one, slow cooked lamb, richly spiced but mild. He wanted me to try the Jungle Curry which was described as being made with jungle paste and also rather bluntly as Fiercely Hot. Despite the recent heavy rain I don’t think there was enough water in the reservoirs of Southampton to cope with my battle with the Jungle Ingredients so not wanting to cause a scene by suddenly bursting into flames in the intimate atmosphere of Mango Portswood, I went for the Spicy Thai salad. The hot chilli dressing was fine accompanying the vegetables, slices of grilled beef and sumptuous King Prawns.

Plates and bowls cleared, I was certainly happy, the service had been prompt and courteous, and Cook junior chatted with the friendly member of staff about school and the up and coming Easter holidays as he selected a sweet from the dessert menu.

What better dish to keep a curry company than banana fritters that are drizzled in honey and for good measure, served with mixed fruits and a generous dollop of fresh ice cream? Ask Cook Junior, he of only leaving empty plates and bowls!

Throughout the ninety minutes we were there the restaurant slowly began to fill up and the phone was almost constantly ringing clearly showing the popularity of the restaurant but at times causing a few problems for the member of staff, trying to take orders, distribute the dishes and take bookings at the same time. Also it must have been a little difficult to hear the callers as the music for such a small front area of Mango was a little intrusive at times, when we arrived we were treated to a few heavy disco tracks which is a little disconcerting for a late Monday afternoon although the music did mellow after a while.

So, if you are looking for an cosy intimate atmosphere with a delightfully varied Thai menu I would recommend the Portswood Mango, there is also a fully licensed bar offering a great selection of beers, spirits and wine, something can be found to suite all tastes. Traditional Thai just off the beat and track, give it a go.

Matt Black Hi, I'm Matt Black, Some of you may have heard my name and some of those will have seen it on the side of a pot of paint! I am a pianist, comedian songwriter, record producer and er columnist (see below... cough).

This issue I felt it was appropriate to follow on from last time's article about Open Mic Nights by scratching the leather of the subject of actually negotiating and attracting fully paid gigs of one's own!

As you, Dear reader, may imagine this is a huge subject - and with an infinite number of solutions and methods, but in my not so meagre experience I feel I have some words to the wise. To break down the requirements you need: • To have an entertaining act - (essential!)

• To be contactable and discoverable • To agree on a fee/deal that both the engager and the engaged are mutually happy • To be able to transport that act and necessary equipment to the venue in which it is to be held An important factor that eludes many acts when they ask 'Why won't they give me a gig?' is the 'Me' word - What are you? Are you and your act different and talented enough to warrant an audience?

A harsh question, I am aware, but a necessary one. I have encountered thousands of souls with immense talents in all disciplines, but the holy grail is a combination of talents, presentation, and personality in an aesthetic package that the public can relate to. By achieving this basic requirement the people who organise gigs will strive to find you, you should not have to go to them unless you feel the need to bring their attention to your charms.

Do ask other entertainers (tactfully) about their rates. Anyone worth their salt will not be scared of other acts (the more class acts around the more venues there will be), also it's a good idea to have your prime rate in your mind and be willing to discount to your acceptable rate, e.g. if you aim to work three times a week for £200, but you NEED to earn £150 then all well and good, even £100 a night if the venue is smaller than usual, and maybe their budget isn't there ... remember that when you are playing, you are earning, never a bad thing.

Sometimes a venue will play hard ball and want you to play your first gig for less or even free! DO NOT. You don't gain anything from that. Your price is your price, just like their wares. If that happens, Look them in the eye and say “Tell you what ... Call a plumber, ask him how much it'll be for him to spend 4 hours on your premises between 7 and 11pm ... I'll do it for half that!”

Mr Tein It wasn’t so long ago, that we football punters were all being sold the line, that the only person who could save The England football team was Harry Rednapp.

The ground swell of English Football fans, according to most newspapers anyway, told us unless ‘Arry was the next England manager the England team was doomed. That was being said even though many of the clubs Harry managed have become doomed following his departure. However, it now appears the papers really did get it seriously

put other England players to shame. Lallana, in particular, took his hokey cokey style of football straight in to the England team: you know, he puts his left leg in, his left leg out, turns it all around and chips the ball delicately into the box for England’s winning goal. My own guess is Lallana will definitely go to Brazil. But for cruel fate so I’m sure would have Rodriquez. I honestly believe Lambert should too - although many people in football still favour £35 million pound Liverpool misfit and horse impersonator, Andy Caroll. With Mr Rednapp being dumped by Spurs and struggling to lead QPR back to the Premiership at the first chance ( sound familiar Saints fans?!) it turns out the real saviours of England Football are in fact Southampton Football Club, whose status grows as each new English player joins one of the many England set ups.

March saw James Ward-Prowse making his seventh appearance for the Under-21s, academy stars Callum Chambers, Harrison Reed, Matt Targett and Sam Gallagher all turned out for England under 19’s in their 3-0 win over Turkey, and for the first time ever four Saints named in the full England squad Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriquez and Luke Shaw. Although only two of them made it on to the pitch, the confidence that both internationally inexperienced players showed on the ball and their enthusiasm to take the play forward,

Bob Charles Sadly the Saints lost two legends since the last issue. Both goalkeepers, each within a week., both had been struggling with illness.

John Christie (26 Sep 1929 - 9 Mar 2014, a Saint 51-59) and Robert John Charles 72 (26 Dec 1941 - 7 Mar 2014 a Saint 59-60) AND though as a paper we mourn them both, as an editor I mourn for the big, loud man that was my fiercest supporter and known to me almost my entire life as Uncle Bob. So my apologies to the friends and family of Mr Christie, but I only have space for one.

AND there is no better use of that space than with the eulogy given at Bob’s packed funeral by his close friend and ex-Saint David Hughes.

AS REMEMBERED BY EX SAINT DAVID HUGHES I first met Bob 23 years ago. I had no idea how big a part of my life would become.

I had moved to Southampton to play football and was living with a host family. I was not happy in my digs and maybe it was fate that my friend Marc drove past one day and pulled over. We had known each other through football. During the conversation it came out that I wasn't happy where I was living.

Marc invited me to his, so with that I jumped in and headed up to Hill Lane.

Marc introduced me to his dad who was laid on the floor, a favourite position of his, as I would discover over the years.

Marc told him that I played for Saints, at which point he left me in no uncertain doubt that we would get relegated and that our goalkeeper was useless. Again something that I would hear time and time again over the years.

Marc explained to Bob my living situation and after 20 minutes of him telling me how bad a player I must be if I couldn't get into that Saints

Historically, prior to Rickie Lambert’s recent England debut, you have to go back ten years to have a current Saints player pull on the England shirt and that was James Beattie. Then, going back even further, did you know that in 1982, Southampton FC fielded 7 former or future England captains in their side? That’s right 7! I will give you till the end of this column to figure out who they were - six are easy, one is tricky. Then back even further, 114 years ago in fact, we had the wonderful C B Fry, who not only played for Saints in an FA Cup Final but also won England international caps at Football and Cricket

Side, Bob said I was welcome to move in. As we left for Marc to drop me off, I felt as if I had come out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Marc laughed and said "that's my dad you get used to him".

As I discovered over the next 20 years that was indeed Bob’s personality... loud, funny, opinionated, loyal, generous, kind.

A larger than life character you knew if Bob was around.

He had an opinion on anything and everything and was his happiest if it was the opposite to yours. They were great times at Hill Lane, Maureen (Bob’s wife), Marc and his family welcomed myself into theirs. My brothers too became a part of their family and in later years my wife and children.

It took me a while to work more about that when I did I realised he had a heart of gold hidden underneath his opinionated exterior. A perfect example of this was when he would come and watch me play at the Dell. It always followed the same pattern. I would leave him a couple of tickets. He would leave before the end of the game. When I arrived back at the house afterwards he would look at me with utter disdain ... "Don't tell me you think you played well. What a bad team you are, your certainties for relegation, don't

Back to the current side, I guess we are all pondering of how many of our three England hopefuls from Lambert, Lallana, and Shaw make it to Brazil. But there is a fifth player who in this seasons form could be a dark horse for Roy Hodgson to select.

Our French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has played at all age-levels in the France youth set-up from under-16 to under-21, but has yet to make his full debut for France . Having lived in England for five years, he could quite sensibly decide to switch allegiance and possibly be eligible for Hodgson's squad on account of the residency rule. It brings to mind the debate over Mathew Le Tissier, who due to his channel Island origins was eligible to play for France but held out for his dream to play for England.

Hand on heart, England winning the World Cup this year is as unlikely as the Harry Rednapp/Rupert Low dream team returning to St Mary’s . But having some players in the squad and maybe the team would be as good as a win for Saints fans.

And let’s not forget, the only time England won the World Cup there was a Saints player, a certain Terry Paine, in the Squad.

Oh and who were the seven captains?

It was of course: Alan Ball, Mike Channon, Kevin Keegan, Mick Mills, Dave Watson, Peter Shilton, and the one you might not have got … Mark Wright. #COYE #COYR’s!

I would argue back defending my corner. An hour later Marc would call, "Dad said you play well today".

That was Bob. He would say what you liked about me but low and behold anybody else saying it. He would defend you to the hilt.

Bob was great fun. I particularly loved the way he would never get anybody's name right ... ever. Not completely wrong, just his version. I gave up correcting him a long time ago, developing a skill of working out who he was actually talking about.

From people he saw every day, to Saints latest signings, he just made them up.

Food was always a topic close to Bob’s Heart. He would delight in telling me how much he hasd paid for something in the reduced aisle at the supermarket. He had it down to a fine art.

Around Christmas time he would go into overdrive. if you rang him five times, he would be in a different supermarket each time! Boxing day was an institution, Bob's birthday and enough food to sink a battleship.

He would go to my brother’s coffee shop ... the girls would ask Bob if he wanted anything? “No, glass of water please”. As the water arrived Bob would say “Stick a cou-

ple of slices of toast in please”. As the toast was being buttered he’d say “Just stick a fried egg on that please”. A few moments before the eggs were ready he would casually add “Maybe a bit of bacon?” and so on... by the time his plate arrived he would have the full English. I never saw him drink the water either.

I saw Bob every Monday, as he would join Marc and I to collect the rent money. He always asked how I was doing what football I'd seen how the kids were. He would tell me about his weekend's weekly visit to Phil Channon’s fruit and veg shop where he helped himself. He would tell me how the Saints needed a new keeper ... after I deciphered which one he was talking about. He hated my driving always telling me to slow down! He was great with the tenants though sometimes bad for business, taking pity on the ones that didn't have the money. He brought toys for the young children. Big Bob. Big heart.

He didn’t come with me on the last Monday before he passed as he was struggling with a bad back. I went up to see him in bed... told him how lazy he was and that we had work to do! We laughed.

That's how I will remember him.'
