FRANK TURNER to HEADLINE WICKHAM FESTIVAL THURSDAY 1 - SUNDAY 4 AUGUST Hollywood legend Kiefer Sutherland, Frank Turner and Graham Nash are the star names in the Wickham Festival’s best ever line-up. FRANK TURNER AND THE SLEEPING SOULS will top the bill on Saturday August 3 in what is a major coup for organisers who have long wanted to secure the Wessex Boy who grew up in Winchester and is now one of the biggest names on the festival circuit having played at the Opening Ceremony for the London 2012 Olympics. One of the hardest-working artists around with more than 2,300 gigs to his name, he has just concluded a sell-out nationwide tour including the 6,000-capacity Bournemouth International Centre and his appearance at Wickham has sent ticket sales soaring. The following night KIEFER SUTHERLAND is bringing his country band to the picturesque Hampshire village near Fareham. He is sure to draw a big crowd to the Village Stage alongside ALABAMA 3 while GILBERT O’SULLIVAN and RALPH MCTELL headline the Valley Stage. There are so many big-name performers this year that for the first time both stages will have equal size and billing in order to accommodate them all. The event kicks off in style on Thursday August 1 with the PROCLAIMERS and SKINNY LISTER (See Music Reviews) on one stage while the other hosts JUDY COLLINS and rock icon GRAHAM NASH, one of only a handful of artists to have been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He will be playing hits from his time with the Hollies and with Crosby, Still, Nash and Young as well as his solo material while his close friend Judy Collins is best known for her hit Send in the Clowns. Friday sees Isle of Wight chart-toppers LEVEL 42 take the spotlight along with DREADZONE and four-time Grammny nominated guitarist STANLEY JORDAN. Saturday will see a foot-stomping evening with the MEN THEY COULDN’T HANG preceding FRANK TURNER along with GRACE PETRIE and AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM. And Sunday will see a fantastic finale as KIEFER SUTHERLAND is joined by Grammy winning singer LUCINDA WILLIAMS and ALABAMA 3.

Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “This is definitely the best line-up we have ever had - and ticket sales are reflecting that. The way things are going, all four days could see out which would be fantastic. “We are absolutely thrilled to have got Frank Turner at long last; we have been chasing him for years but the dates never quite matched. “We are delighted that he is able to slot us in between festivals in Austria and Slovenia and I know he will be hugely popular with our fans. He is an incredible live act. “His recent concert in Bournemouth was sensational with many there saying it was the best they had ever seen him and I know our crowd are in for an amazing night. “We have had a huge amount of interest too in Kiefer Sutherland. His music is a perfect fit for us but it is quite amazing to think that such a global superstar will be coming to such a quaint rural setting. It has really put Wickham on the map worldwide. “But it is not just the headliners which is attracting fans; we have a very solid bill across all four stages including Stanley Jordan who is my little treat to myself. He is such a talented guitarist I had just had to book him for a rare UK appearance. “The line-up is pretty well finished now; I’m not sure we could fit any more superstars in! This is definitely the strongest array of artists we have ever had. It is just as well we have extended the Village Stage to give it equal billing with the Valley Stage. “We have already sold a lot of weekend tickets even before we unveiled the headliners because people know the unique atmosphere will remain the same – but now sales will really soar. “Even though we can now accommodate 7,000 people, the festival still has a real familyfriendly feel with plenty to entertain young children as well as a great range of food, drink and craft stalls plus four days of fantastic music. “There is plenty for children to do and they can roam the site unattended while parents enjoy top-class food and drink, tour the many stalls or just listen to the excellent music – or late-night comedy shows. The family-friendly, chilled atmosphere is the secret of our success and advance tickets sales are reflecting that. It is looking like a bumper crowd so fans are advised to buy early.” WEEKEND TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE at just £150 per adult or £75 for each Under 16 with Under 10's admitted completely free. Adult day tickets are £40 for August 1 and £55 for each of the other three days; children aged 1016 are half price. Weekend camping can be booked at £30 per tent or caravan/motorhome. Tickets are on sale via website along with details of all artists confirmed for the 2019 festival which runs from August 1-4.

Launched in 2012, Southampton Ambassadors is my project to encourage the city’s elite, big and small, to join together for mutual benefit and the good of the Southampton area. AND its working! Our aim is to inspire and galvanise business and pride within Southampton and interest from outside. Whatever you need, I recommend checking out a Southampton Ambassador first. This isn’t any of those ‘buy a badge’ to say how good you are. Southampton Ambassadors are looking to politely (sometimes) kick our fantastic but lethargic city up the backside!

If you’re interested in joining? To qualify you need to be emotionally sympathetic or connected to Southampton, proposed by an existing Ambassador, seconded by another, agreed by me and pay the fee. Oh and of course, you and whatever you do, needs to be proven as recommendable. Which is why I personally vouch for all the people and business on the right (and left!).

Want to help us? You can do as little as LIKING our Facebook page at: Facebook.com/Southamptoncity or visiting southamptonambassadors.com

Poetry Strip Anxious I walk and day dream, along a chalk stream A place so calm and tranquil, No talk, serene, reflected sunbeam; A place that leaves me thankful Crystal clear, downstream it sweeps; Babbling, riffling, dancing Lend your ear and it will speak, Entrancing whilst advancing See through like gin and cold to dip, A looking glass down to its bed So trees grow down, to take a sip And a thousand words are said The currents make, the weed fronds snake Seductive and beguiling, Seen through opaque, like a dancers shake, The reason why I’m smiling Dappled light, on a changing sight The flow means, no scene the same Birdsong delight, makes things seem right; A picture to grace any frame Light and dark green and all in between Woven around this meander Sights that I’ve scene, reflect on this sheen, Make me a privileged bystander Life lived in slow paces, underwater oasis This bank the best seat to observe, One of nature’s best places, where wildlife embraces Must do all we can to conserve

Love Love gives everything and asks for nothing. Love is all consuming, love does not count. Love gives everything and asks for nothing. It is when you are nothing you experience love. Love is a state of nothing, as nothing matters but your love. Your very being becomes all consuming as love gives everything and asks for nothing. Can you give yourself to love and ask for nothing? It is when you have nothing that counts as when you have nothing your true self appears. I am nothing in your eyes beloved, I give myself to you. There is no me but just you. Love gives everything and asks for nothing. When love becomes all consuming there is nothing but love and everything becomes nothing. We come from nothing and we will end up with nothing, but today we think we are something. Something we are for sure but truly if you stand back and witness what you are, you are nothing. Love gives everything and asks for nothing. I give you my love and ask for nothing. Love is love and only when you have loved can you understand love.

STRETCHED AND RADICAL, ANOTHER STYLE OF SCOOTER CUSTOMISING.

Scooters are like individual portions of Stilton cheese …. no! not small and smelly, shame on you for thinking that …. but something not liked by all. When I was young and living in Brighton a fact was writ large in stone ‘motorcycle riders don’t like scooters’. Scooterists had a similar lump of rock saying vice versa. Both tribes worshiped different music, clothing and didn’t mix, unless it was to trade insults along with occasional blows. Time passed, old animosities eased and one hectic 1970s Saturday night at The White Swan in Mansbridge (the mecca biker pub of its day) two skin-

heads pulled in on scooters, walked up to the DJ and complained about the music – too much rock! Response was to put “Sweet Home Alabama” on the turntable and the scooter riders left in disgust, but there was no unpleasantness. Some years later I begrudgingly test rode scooters, including an early electric one, and discovered that I enjoyed the experience, I even wrote enthusiastically about a 50cc model. Who’d have thought it? Scooters are loved by so many folk in countries all round the world for practical reasons. The small wheeled machines provide economical transport with decent weather protection and most models have lockable storage under the seat along with bag hooks on the leg shields– what’s not to like? And let’s not overlook the aprons that can be fitted to cover the rider’s lower half with gaps for feet to be put down at

SCOOTER RALLIES HAVEN’T CHANGED MUCH SINCE THE 50’S AND 60’S, MUSIC AND CLOTHING ACCEPTED. THE MAIN THEME IS, AS ALWAYS, GET TOGETHER AND ENJOY.

(below) London may have a monument to Nelson, I think this superb artwork is more fitting. As well as ships of the line and engraved cases Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton adorn the other side of this scooter.

(below) Taken at a Brighton reunion, someone who is proud to have been there ‘in the day’ - so was I, young and watching through a window.

stops. The aprons allow ‘nice clothes’, suits etc to be worn, just watch traffic in Paris for examples. Which brings me to the groups of scooter I regularly see out on rides, no matter what the weather is (that protection must work). The groups meet up, go places and make me feel guilty for being in a car because it’s cold (tendon damage in my right leg, you know). And yes, many are wearing Mod-style Parkas and some look the age to have worn them in the sixties. But there’s more to scooters than practicality. For a start, they can be performance tuned for racing as I found out when a tatty looking 200cc Lambretta left my 650cc Triumph in the dust. And to follow last issues custom theme, scooters are featuring some of the best custom work to be seen, often the side panels are taken off to reveal top-rate artwork and intricately engraved chrome engine cases. For a long time I was ignorant of the custom scooter scene because I simply didn’t go and look. So the lesson is, don’t dislike something until you’ve found out why you don’t like it – in other words, blind prejudice is (as always) a bad thing. Apart from Marmite, that’s just wrong.

“WRITE ABOUT ANYTHING” he said! Well that narrows it down? I think I’ll write about er ... me. Hi, I'm Matt Black, Some of you may have heard my name (and some will have seen it on the side of a pot of paint!), but most will have not. I am a pianist/ comedian/ songwriter/record producer/radio host / columnist ... (see below).

I’ll have something original please … A quick thought: Do you love music? Do you love live bands? Do you admire those gifted artists you hear on the radio? (Now the catch) Are you one of those admirers that’s actually making it harder for us to discover any new ones? AND BEFORE YOU THINK ME AND FELLOW COLUMNIS BARRY UPTON HAVE LOST THE PLOT ... IT WORKED FOR ROY ROGERS!

I have been in the music industry now for about 27 years and during that time I have worked with a range of different artists, both at live music events as well as through my recording studio Hangover Hill. I have watched artists develop their material from bare bones to an incredible song. I've seen them start out on their music careers at a very young age, find their feet and grow comfortably into their chosen genre. The excitement and nerves as they settle into the world of live performance in the pubs around their local area and further afield. Then the inevitable often happens. They settle into a routine, they are popular, the venues and punters love them and after the hundredth time of someone shouting “play Wonderwall” they stop and they think. Let's face it people love to hear covers they can sing and dance to on a night out but sometimes it seems, that's all the music scene is about. The fact is it isn't. There are some incredibly talented singer/songwriters out there and they've written amazing original songs. Songs that deserve to be heard and not just one or two thrown into a set if they can get away with it, but an entire set of material that shows the audience who they are as an artist. That's the plight of the artist but how about the venue? They are also in a difficult position. They have to keep the customers happy, happy customers means plenty of money spent on food and drink and plenty of money makes for a happy brewery. I watch as some venues try desperately to keep live music alive however we are losing so many a year now that are having to

close their doors. There are a few venues who promote artists and their live music and this is great to see, however it's a shame there are not more of them.

SO WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP ORIGINAL ARTISTS? Well this is where you, the customer, the audience come in. Next time you are out and about having a good time and you encounter some live music you can do a very simple thing. Instead of requesting something you already know and have heard a thousand times, go to the artist and ask them if they write their own material. If they do then ask them could they play one. It seems like a very simple thing but the more of us that do it the more hope we have of changing things for the

But seriously: Q: There are two tubaplayers sitting in a car. Who's driving? A: The policeman Q: What's the range of a tuba? A: Twenty yards, if you've got a good arm. Tuba Player: “Did you hear my last recital?” Friend: “I hope so.” Q: How many tuba players does it take to change a light bulb? A: Three: one to hold the bulb and two to drink until the room spins. Q: What's a "tuba for"? A: 1 1/2" by 3 1/2", unless you request a "full cut." Q: How do you fix a broken tuba? A: With a "tuba glue." Q: How can you tell the trumpet player's kids at the playground? A: They're the ones who can't swing.

And there is always: Jaggs at 119, The Royal Albert, Thatchers, The Jolly Sailor, Edge

CHAPLIN’S CELLAR BAR opens its doors to ‘Set in Stone’, the quirky surf garage influenced ‘Palooka 5’, acoustic songstress ‘Krista Green’ and folky fusionists ‘The Fox and the Owl’ and finally over at The Lighthouse in Poole ivory tinkler ‘Ben Waters’, the funky ‘James Taylor Quartet’ and folk minstrel ‘Chris Wood’ are amongst the temptations. Many years ago I was a runner, just for a short while. I had a friend Sue who was planning on joining the Royal Navy and was involved in many exciting projects that had already catapulted her into the realms of superhero fitness.

After a lot of persuading she got me to join her in a short run. I was adamant I wouldn’t enjoy it, cycling was my thing, I went everywhere by pushbike, feet pedalling not pounding. However I did go out on a crisp winter’s Sunday afternoon, Sue guiding my way through the country paths of St. Albans where I lived at the time. Let’s just say we ran, not far but we moved! The next week a little further and soon we were covering not just a few hundred yards but miles. I felt the buzz that had befriended the endorphins which were clamouring for attention. The Royal Navy called and Sue sailed away and I stopped running. Reading Jog On: How Running Saved My Life (William Collins £12.99) has made me reconsider my decades old decision to stop. As Bella Mackie sat on her sofa on the verge of a divorce after husband walked out on her, the crippling anxiety and depression were doing their best to stop her moving forward in life. The last thing on her mind was exercise. One day fighting against the dark voice of her inner demons she pulled on a pair of trainers and went for a run, she did the same the next day and soon every day. With time, the clouds of dark stormy moods lifted as fresh air and the outdoors took the place of staying inside hiding from life. This book is not just Bella’s story; she is very brave at confronting her past to break through to living more in the present; it’s also

a helpful guide as to how pushing the boundaries can forge a path into a healthier world both physically and mentally. This is an inspirational book that will make you laugh, cry and above all have you looking out of your own personal window to see the opportunities beyond that comfort zone.

free, it wasn’t an easy journey and she will inspire many with this book.

Dry January is over; many of us give up the booze for those thirty one days in the annual attempt to flush out the system. We all feel better for it until the 1st February when the sound of corks being popped and cans being opened is well known to drown out the sound of rush hour traffic. Clare Pooley had a reason to give up alcohol, she needed to, and she had become dependant, a bottle of wine a night, perhaps more. She drank alone, a mother of young children, trying to keep her drinking secret from them and the rest of her family. In March 2015 she confronted her problem, quit drinking and started a blog Mummy was a Secret Drinker under the pseudonym Sober Mummy. She discovered from the followers her blog developed that she wasn’t alone. The Sober Diaries (Coronet £7.99) is Claire’s story of that first year sober, a year that became even more challenging as she was diagnosed with breast cancer. When she announced this on her blog her million plus followers came forward with their support. Today’s Claire is alcohol and cancer

Tracey Thorn’s first memoir 2013’s Bedsit Disco Queen (Virago £8.99) was a look back at her time in the music business focussing on her years as the frontwoman of Everything But the Girl. Six years later and Tracey is back with Another Planet (Canongate £14.99) in which she reflects often with the use of her diaries, on teenage life in the Hertfordshire village Brookmans Parks. In the first chapter she writes about the way a diary can remind you of what actually happened as opposed to what you think happened? “They never fail to shock” reflects Tracey. Perhaps the shock is reflected as to what isn’t achieved in an average day, shopping trips where nothing is bought, trips to Libraries that are shut, or dances with boys at discos that turned out to be rather boring. Don’t let this put you off, this skilfully written tale hinges on the diaries creating a suburban childhood intertwined with a return to the village thirty years since she lived there. Mixing childhood dreams with the reality of the past and present Tracey visits the suburban greenbelt

with poetic verve and produces a scenario of a world that lives on well beyond its 1970’s setting. Delightful. Beware Scratchman, the all encompassing Devilish Bogeyman! In the mid 1970’s Tom Baker and one of his costars Ian Marter in their early months working on Doctor Who, decided to write a screenplay with the idea of getting a film off the ground. As is often the case with the majority of movie pitches the film failed to materialise and all copies of the script were thought lost. A few years back a copy of the script came to light and the ideas have regenerated into prose. Tom with the help of writer James Goss has reworked the original film treatment into a stylishly scary adventure featuring the fourth Doctor and his companions Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan. Doctor Who. Scratchman (BBC Books £16.99) is an eloquently

creepy tale of living scarecrows, nightmare worlds and devilish traps. The narrative rattles with the atmosphere of the television series that dominated the Saturday winter night TV schedules of the 1970’s and is told in the first person by The Doctor, or is it Tom Baker? The two these days seem one and the same. There is also an audio book available (BBC Physical Audio £26.50) and this is a real treat, Doctor Tom is given free reign to have fun and produces a spine tingling reading of the battles with Scratchman. I listened to it in the car, and driving down those country lanes at night, a glance out of the window, the branches of the trees swaying in the wind, they are trees aren’t they… not scarecrows? (To travel back in time a to a previous incarnation of The AND Guide, AND Magazine, visit my blog at www.therewriteman.wordpress.com and check out the entry From New Milton to Soho for an interview with Tom Baker.) REVOLVER. (FROM LEFT) JAMES THURLING, RHYS KIBBLE & WILL OLIVER

NEW single REVOLVERS True Love EP RELEASE DATE: 20 FEBRUARY 2019 Revolvers are the classic rock four-piece with two guitars, a bass and drums and everyone on vocals. With that, you might be thinking “So far, so John, Paul, George and Ringo ” right ? Well, not quite : James, Will, Steve and Rhys doesn’t quite have the same ring although they do have a 60s beat band influence, along with shades of BritPop and more modern groups like Arctic Monkeys. The title track of their new EP is a driving slab of jangly rawk that reminded me most of Smashing Pumpkins in their pomp. Think of their hit song 1979 speeded up about a third but with the same bassline and a remarkably similar vocal and you’ll be in the right ball park. Chuck in a couple of Noelesque riffs and some throwaway Liam stylings and the track lifts itself to become an anthemically memorable opener for this, their new EP for 2019. Confusing Times is an altogether much punkier outing with layered

guitars and an angry opening riff that matches the subject matter as they sing of politicians and getting “plastered at Wetherspoons”. Rubbing Shoulders With The Devil is up next and sees the boys slowing things down a touch with a grungier, heavier take complete with fuzzy riffs and falsetto harmonies. This is a chugging rocker but it’s still very evidently Revolvers : the vocals come through loud and clear and the production across the record is commendable, while the chorus is instantly singable and the solo two-thirds of the way through showcases another weapon in their armoury. Come Again is a bit like a collaboration between PIL and early 70s Rolling Stones and is an absolute stormer to close out with. I’d imagine their live set would be more expansive and look forward to seeing them soon. e Revolvers are: James Thurling (singer and lead guitar), Rhys Kibble (drums and backing vocals), Will Oliver (guitar and backing vocals) and Steve Morrison (bass and backing vocals). Why isn’t Steve in the picture? That’s Rock’n Roll nip ... as they say. What do you get when you get 3 Londoners and a Southampton lad on drums? Revolvers. Highly recommended! SKINNY LISTER The Story Is … SEE THEM LIVE 1st March at The 1865 The first time I heard about Skinny Lister was when a friend asked if he could stay at my place if he got me a ticket for the gig they were playing down here. Living in the remotest depths of Wiltshire, he’d venture to the civilised world every once in a while to take in some proper culture and usually his choices were on the money and so it was with this utterly unique band. A six-piece with a female singer, featuring a stand-up bass and unusual instruments like ukuleles, mandolins, concertinas and stomp boxes, Skinny Lister are essentially rock and roll but have been labelled everything from punk to folk since first forming a decade ago. This, their sixth long-player, is something of a concept album in nature but given their quirky status and their flip-flopping of styles, I’d describe it more as a snapshot of where they’re at right now given the fact by their own admission it’s a collection of musical vignettes based on their thoughts and observations on life in the modern world. Three singles have already been released with the album itself being officially launched on 1 March 2019, while the band play our very own 1865 the very next night, Friday 2 March. I can thoroughly recommend seeing them live as they’re superb on stage and something of a throwback to an era when it really was something to put on a show. Singer Lorna Thomas is a livewire and she bounces off the band as she leads us all on a merry song and dance – and I mean that quite literally. It’s a good idea to leave the car at home for this lot and if you’re not dancing at some point during the proceedings then you really should just give up going out altogether … The latest single is called My Distraction and is about as poppy as they get, with a sing-a-long chorus

reminiscent of the B-52s and if you watch the video you’ll see what I mean about Lorna, although she’s actually quite restrained in it. The irony of filming a video I’m sure is deliberate given the subject matter – it’s about our obsession with technology – and she has a lot of fun running around with a TV remote in her hand. Inadvertently, it reminds me of the character in The Fast Show who would be rapidly edited from one location to another while continuing a monologue about how great cheesy peas are, but I think that says more about me than Skinny Lister .. or maybe not because tongue is firmly in cheek on the title track - another single - with Dan Heptinstall taking over on vocals for a sly but reverential dig at 80s power ballads. They are one of the funniest bands around and a mickey take is never far from their minds, the cover of this album itself being a twisted take-off of an Oasis record, while a lot of their lyrics are deliberately playful. If there’s shades of a Smithsera Morrissey in that sense, their musical influences are far too broad to list but take in Irish folk, Jamaican ska, punk, new wave, indie rock and ... well, you get the point. I think the main thing to consider is if you’re a music fan rather than a fan of certain types of music you should be able to dig what they’re doing. If you’re open-minded and enjoy a live show regardless of whether it’s your favourite band or not, then they’re worth checking out. Elsewhere on the album, My Life, My Architecture is pure Blondie, for example, while Diesel Vehicle evokes Pulp or John Grant. Rattle Roar is a Poguesy jangler which would go down well with a welloiled crowd, while Artist Arsonist is a kind of fusion between a Billy Bragg styled vocal and a Joe Jackson-esque melody. Just in case you’re getting exhausted by the obvious energy emitted by the band, they do occasionally take their foot off the gas and never more so than on the beautiful ballad Stop Breathe, an acoustic double-vocal anthem that sees a more serious side emerge. Skinny Lister have depth. We know they have breadth given all the artists and genres I’ve already men-

tioned, but they really are a substantial outfit and quite different to most bands touring in the twentyfirst century. This kind of music needs to be seen live so give them a go at The 1865 - you will not be disappointed.

JACKIE CHARLES Future Fantasies

Norwegian singer-songwriter Kaja Bremnes releases her debut album, Future Fantasies, in the guise of her band/alter ego Jackie Charles on 19 April 2019. Billed as splitting her time between Berlin and a fishing boat somewhere in the fjords of her homeland, Kaja/Jackie has been described as a mixture of The Cure, Alvvays and Ariel Pink but on first listen I instantly thought only of Bjork. Having lived with the album for a while I stand by that mainly because of the vocal stylings, but appreciate the sound is more ethereal than anything created by the bonkers Icelandic songstress. There’s a smidge of Nico in there too, but over time I found myself forgetting about comparisons and just listening to Jackie Charles instead. Steve Lamacq has been banging the drum for a while now and I can see why because Future Fantasies is a grower that does get under your skin the more times you play it. Dominika’s Song is a good place to start as it’s the first song the band created a video for and it sums up what they’re all about. Ostensibly, it’s a breezy slice of indie driven by a relentless guitar

riff overlaid with a cheery vocal, yet when you listen to the lyrics you discover it’s more of a mantra, like a self-help manual wrapped up in a three minute pop song : “So go on, go ahead. It’s just life, don’t be shy, get a grip and just do it, just do it, just do it ..” Time Travel is a Cocteau Twinsesque daydream about escaping the real world and going back to the innocence of youth, while Greedy is a slightly cynical downtempo number examining the frailties of the human condition. Birthday Song continues the trippy window-gazing and you can almost feel the way Kaja’s mind works by this point as the music races on while the words float off, seemingly in another direction. Jackie Charles are an unusual artist and the album is quite hard to describe yet it remains easy to listen to throughout and I think it’ll only get better over time. In essence, it’s dreamy art-pop but there’s an earthy reality to a lot of the subject matter, despite the spaced-out delivery. Midnight Sun is a case in point : plinky synths and a bright 80s guitar line, fronted by an almost twee vocal : “We swim in the light, but we spit in the shade”. But I like that : I like the fact that at every turn, Jackie Charles contradicts everything, turning a cheery song from summery pop into something much, much darker when you really listen to it, while their slow burners are actually the opposite and quite positive underneath the grey, overcast musicality. Unusual, but like Skinny Lister, the more you play the album, the more revealing it becomes.

NOTICE If you think your band might be worth covering, head to our Facebook page:

THE MUSIC BIZ according to Barry Upton

WITH SONIA - BACK IN THE DAY

Barry Upton Our resident pop guru Barry is a multi international hit songwriter/producer/performer. Initially a front singer with Brotherhood Of Man he’s worked with a multitude of household names including being creator of the lovable pop outfit STEPS, penning their massive hit 5678 and with his mate and editor of this ‘ere paper, previously co-hosting the AND Magazine Show on Radio Hampshire. He’s currently a TV & radio presenter and producer in Thailand, still performing and a double #1 Chart buster in 2018 ... twice!

PAYING TRIBUTE TO THE GREATS Suddenly every major act in the Universe from Madonna (Mad-OnHer) to Oasis (No-Way-Sis) to Fleetwood Mac (Fleetwood Back) were being copied and audiences were paying good money to see what some people termed imposters. Holiday resorts like Benidorm in Spain, are now flooded with all kinds of tribute acts.

For many years now there has been a growing number of ‘tribute’ acts in the entertainment field. It started with ‘The Bootleg Beatles’ and ‘Bjorn Again’, an Australian Abba look and sound-alike band plus there has always been a glut of ‘Elvis’ impersonators.

Recently in Pattaya, Thailand, we have been entertained by the likes of Pink Floyd, Freddie Mercury and Queen, Elton John, Rod Stewart, The Beatles and The Beach Boys, the last two led by myself. As a big fan of both of these legendary bands, I sometimes enjoy putting on my John Lennon Sgt. Peppers outfit or a Hawaiian shirt and pump out the hits I grew up with. In my opinion, the strength of a tribute act is down to the quality of the catalogue of material on offer and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of singing those 60s favourites. In the Southampton area, I know very well of my former band Wild At Heart singer Kelly's successful tribute band Paramore (or less) and her new Chic tribute band with the accent more on the great music than the look (could at least one member have dreadlocks?). For the ‘serious’ musician, it’s appalling how the public are happy to watch ‘pretenders’ rather than the real deal. I believe there is a big place in the entertainment spectrum for originality and entertaining musicianship so long as the audience opens up their minds to hear something new. Before copy acts appeared, the likes of Jimi Hendryx, Keith Emerson, David Bowie and such like, pioneered the music scene and influenced the progression of popular music. All were highly entertaining in their own way without feeling the need to replicate or copy what had gone before. As a music songwriter and producer for the best part of my professional career, I have always stood on the fence between these two extremes. On one hand, I am influenced heavily by my

favourite artists and can admit on more than a few occasions to rearranging sequences of songs or doing my own take on a musical idea which would benefit my own material without copying not for note to avoid direct plagurism, but have always tried to be original as possible in my creativity. For a long period in the music business, it was almost impossible to be totally original as record company executives wanted only what was commercial and similar to the successful hits of the day, especially from the 80s onwards when the executives in charge of labels were more concerned with profit margins and trends rather than the quality of the original musical output. I think recently the tide has turned somewhat with the advent of the download and the subsequent lower incomes to be derived. With You Tube and streaming, it’s much easier to find a diverse range of styles from all over the world. Therefore it must be up to the young generation to try to be original, to offer up something fresh and new, if only for the love of it. Until that happens, the old songs will always be the best and it’s a tribute to the great songwriters of the 50s, 60s and 70s, for their songs to still sound as fresh today as when they were first released. Maybe the fact that technology was nowhere near as advanced as it is now, reflects in the quality of the writing and innovative production techniques used in those days. So, let’s all enjoy the mass of great material and variety of entertainment available to us from the last six decades or so, while appreciating that not everyone will opt for the same thing. Paying tribute to the greats should not only be respectful, but a reminder of how to be so original that it prompts others to copy your work, the most sincerest form of flattery.

Above: Me in my fave Sgt Pepper Suit, (belew) my Thailand Beach Boys and Beatles tribute party bands. Oh and on the left The Flab Four! The night I suprised Martin at his 60th Birthday bash, ending up in a impromptu Hard Day’s Night. Don’t think Lou and Tony of PS Perrystone Hill were big on the wigs. Sorry boys. :)

So a huge thank you to the many that have listened in, via the website or downloaded the App. It would.d appear that our very simple formula of playing just great music with no adverts is proving to be a hit!

The only disappointment so far has sadly been from my beloved Southampton live music scene. Guys this is a never been offered before opportunity to get your tracks on a playlist. Not just the occasional play on a speciality ‘local’ show or ‘feature’ to satisfy a licence obligation. Yep there’s a cost if accepted ... a massive one off £25! I’ve had a few grumpy comments about charging when there are so many places on the net that will put it on for free. I mean, who doesn’t think being heard in Bolivia is a much better idea? I ask you ... if I’d forked out and built a 5-aside pitch and you wanted to play, wouldn’t you expect to pay? I’ve built this for all of us, but I’m not a Lotto winner and a little support from those that could benefit the most would be nice. We have made some great music here guys and I really want people to hear it so ... over to you. :)

UB40 FEATURING:

ALI, ASTRO & MICKEY ‘A REAL LABOUR OF LOVE 40TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR’ 2019

MARCH 25TH BOURNEMOUTH INTERNATIONAL CENTRE NEW DATES ADDED IN HULL, MANCHESTER, NOTTINGHAM AND SHEFFIELD

UB40 Featuring Ali, Astro & Mickey have announced further dates for their epic 2019 ‘A Real Labour Of Love and 40th Anniversary Tour’. The new dates include Hull City Hall (March 27th), Manchester O2 Apollo (March 31st), Nottingham Royal Concert Hall (April 1st) and Sheffield City Hall (April 3rd). Earlier this year the band released ‘A Real Labour Of Love’, their most successful album for 25 years, which debuted at No.2 in the Official Album Chart. With 2019 marking 40 years since UB40 formed, the legendary reggae band will be celebrating with a greatest hit set that features global smashes including ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘Rat In Mi Kitchen’ and ‘Kingston Town’. Ali, Astro & Mickey will be joined onstage by their incredible eight-piece reggae band. As founding members of Britain’s biggest reggae band UB40, singer Ali Campbell, second vocalist Astro and keyboardist Mickey Virtue topped the UK singles chart on three occasions and sold 70 million records as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe. Between 1983 and 1998 UB40 produced three ‘Labour Of Love’ albums, bringing hits such as Eric

Donaldson’s ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, Lord Creator’s ‘Kingston Town’ and Johnny Osbourne’s ‘Come Back Darling’ to a new, global audience. They also topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with their reggae cover of Neil Diamond’s ‘Red Red Wine’. Now with ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ they give us a fresh take on the legendary series of albums, putting the focus primarily on reggae tracks from the 1980s. New album ‘A Real Labour Of Love’ was produced by Ali, whose instantly recognisable voice is augmented by the ‘sing-jay’ vocal style of Astro. The latter takes the lead on six of the album’s 16 tracks, placing the two singers at the helm of an 11-piece band.

New Southampton music festival - Friday 15th to Sunday 24th March.

Jasmine Hodge

Southampton has a brilliant music scene. It can also be said that music is central to Southampton’s cultural revitalisation. To support this concept, SO:Music City has been devised by a combined force of Solent University, University of Southampton, SoNG*, venues, studios and promoters to organise on-going activities to build it’s music mojo. So ... if you are a venue, promoter or band - GET IN TOUCH NOW. They want to hear from you!

In a similar ilk to Sofar Sounds**, the acts will remain disclosed however, a promise of multi-genre music has been confirmed, inspiring appeal to a wide audience.

the main ones covered. However, this is usually with one-off gigs, the occasional day festivals and in part the recently deceased Common People. It can be overlooked however, that these music events have lesser impact for the local music industries beyond the event and night itself. With hopefully the combined involvement of music lovers all over the city, SO:Music City is pushing for sturdiness and a musical future.

The 23rd will consist of a Day of Art, with art galleries and artist-led workshops throughout the city. This will include, NST City hosting Umbrella Arts Festival which explores the ways health and wellbeing can be transformed by music and creativity; plus, Shop Creative UK will be holding a pop-up craft maker’s fair in the ground floor of West Quay.

PFM, Premiata Forneria Marconi nasce nel 1970. È il gruppo rock italiano più famoso al mondo, l’unico ad avere scalato la classifica “Billboard” negli Stati Uniti. Only kidding … but yep they’re Italian. Awesome and Italian. For the nonItalian speaking here’s it in English. PFM Premiata Forneria Marconi is the most famous italian rock band in the world, and the only one ever to chart US Billboard. PFM started as Quelli, a beat band of the ‘60s featuring Franz Di Cioccio on drums, Giorgio Piazza on electric bass, Franco Mussida on guitars, Flavio Premoli on keyboards. At the end of 1970 the polyinstrumentistalist Mauro Pagani joined, and Premiata Forneria Marconi (later abbreviated PFM) started. Their debut was in 1971 at the Teatro Lirico of Milan as a support act to Yes on their first Italian tour. PFM performed excellent covers of avant-garde bands of the time, such as King Crimson, Jethro Tull, etc. This was an opportunity to demonstrate their great talent; they had already on their second appearance, as a support act for Deep Purple, been hugely popular with both audience and critics.

MILBURYS CC

Good news readers, the Milburys don’t appear to be the worst cricket team on the planet! Having watched England’s efforts in the first two Tests in the Caribbean, I reckon we could have lost equally as badly. The England batsman’s inability to protect their stumps is something I’ve not seen since Milburys middle order last season ... (or the ones before to be fair). We would have had just as much fun though, in the Rum bars of Barbados as it seems the professionals of England have had! Speaking of drinking it would appear that we all did our share of that over Christmas, meaning none of us were looking forward to our

BA in his prize jacket, with Rob (left) and our beloved Milbury’s landlord Martin. (Below) Nets are proving really popular! avoid nets for a couple of months. He insists it wasn’t to avoid exercise, but to make his guts more tolerable to the beer served at the Milburys! He’s making a speedy recovery and even turned up to watch a net session. Says it was the longest hour of his life. So things are shaping up as normal. I’m sure we’ll be ready for the season that seems ages away, but we are defiantly going to need the practise. Until next time, when I may have some news of some early season exciting Milburys exploits… or not.

There is no doubting the commitment of the usual Milburys stalwarts. BA still making it to nets, even though he’d been a complete dick and left the keys in his car and got it nicked! winter nets starting the first week in January. Our Prayers were answered when the Rose Bowl cancelled our first session because of staffing issues. Pussummably they couldn’t find anyone that wanted to watch us piss about and struggle to look like cricketers for an hour. Luckily also for the Southampton Arms, they got an extra hours drinking out of us. Numbers are down at nets, and as a result the youth section has been drafted in. As if we didn’t know we were bad enough, we are now getting our confidence shot to pieces getting bowled by Jim ‘lovely 4’ Skinns son and Allys nipper. As skipper they are already the first names on team sheet. Well they have to be, we can’t even get 11 bodies together for an hours practice and a couple of pints. I’m sure numbers will rise as the weather gets better. Yours truly only just having made his nets debut this week so I’m can’t moan too much. Well it has been bl**dy freezing and none of my cricket stuff fits me after an extra indulgent December, November oh and January! We might even get an appearance from the editor when he stops pissing about with his new software. There is no doubting the commitment of the usual Milburys stalwarts. BA still making it, even though he’d been a complete dick and left the keys in his car and got it nicked. Sadly the thieves taking his prized Jacket, the one he uses when he is doing celebrity appearances as Jethro. Dunc still an ever-present, finding time to make nets appearances in between his constant bleating on about Brexit. I think he’s going to have to take on an assistant to update his Facebook whilst he’s playing cricket this summer. Let’s just hope that if we have a vote for a new captain he’s on the winning side, or he’ll moan about the result for the next 18 months! Geoffers is settling into full retirement and scraping by on the last of the Milburys coffers. Poor Faz has gone through the trouble of having some part of his insides taken out to

The adventures of our cheeky smiling durley boy

Visit andradio.co.uk now for your FREE Apps! and for the next 24 hours all thoughts are on the transfer window. With our club left in such a dismal position when Ralph took over, one may have expected the him to significantly bolster his squad in January. However, he has explained, he simply has not needed to. "The team have shown that they have more potential in them than people thought," he told the press. "We didn't have to immediately bring new players in. The more important thing in this transfer period is to give players away, to have a committed group that is not too big. If it is too big, I cannot give every player the feeling that he is important for me. That is what I want to do.” This has seen players either sold or go out on loan with a view to sell. It’s a big clear out and risky when we still sit on the relegation zone. But in Ralph we must trust. It does look like Ralph is returning to the philoposhy we had in the Pochettino years, where the right mindset and the right attitude are as important as footballing skills. There has also been much talk of his “rules”. Those rules include keeping the dressing room tidy - something that Hasenhuttl himself checks every day - and if rules are broken, they must complete a fine, which can include creating training sessions for youth players or working in the saints shop. He expanded on this in interviews as follows, "If you want to be a part of a team I manage, it is important to put your ego to one side," he added. "To work for the team and for the success of the team. That is more important than one ego. It was important that we put a few rules together, if you stay here in this building and spend the whole time here, it is important to have good discipline on and off the pitch. We show a player every good thing he does for the team, but if he makes a bad thing for the

The adventure continues ... Well 2019 is well and truly underway way and already it’s provided some interesting opportunities and some very exciting doors have opened. As I sit here writing this, I’m just sorting out an outfit to attend the BAFTA’s. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine little old me from Southampton would be off to the biggest awards night in film this country hosts. I would love to tell you all about it but Martin and his deadlines means you will have to wait for the gossip. If you can’t wait you can always check out my instagram below. This year is certainly providing challenges, but a positive one's at that. First up I’m back on the stage in March after a 8 year break. My last musical was back in 2011 with Southampton Musical Society, playing Roddy O’Neil in Boogie Nights, before a one night show in the West End in 2012. It was something I stepped back from to focus on the presenting career but the time now feels right to get one foot back into the world of entertainment and musical theatre. So 5 - 9 March I’m treading the boards again, this time in Grease at the King’s Theatre, Portsmouth. I’m part of a hugely talented cast and lucky enough to be playing Kenickie. Rehearsals are going well. I wanted to see if I still had it in the locker and so far the signs are good. If you fancy coming along tickets are on sale now via the King’s Theatre Southsea Box Office www.kingsportsmouth.co.uk 2019 is also the year my Desire Dream Vision finally come to fruition. I have been working on the philosophy and concept for several year’s now and the first part, the book, is released on the 26th March. (On Pre Order from the 26th Feb via Amazon). I can’t wait to finally share it with you all. (Nor can we! Or have got to buy a copy to give Russel for review? Ed) I am a big believer that anyone can achieve their goals in life no matter how big or small (Not sure Shane Long would agree with you. Ed) and DDV is all about inspiring people to go for it and not to let themselves confine those dream to their imagination. We have printed 500 limited first editions so if you want to get you hands on the first copies make sure you sign up for the pre order in February (Ah… now I get it. You want me to come to a signing session. Sneaky. Ed). This is just the first step for DDV, later in the year after the book release we will be hosting our first DDV Live event. The event will have some fantastic key note speakers and will be something that will really make a difference to everyone who attends. If you want to find out more you can visit DesireDreamVision.com With all this excitement the world of football is still spinning in my life and its been a busy month or so after a hectic Christmas period. Despite some disappointing results of late I really do believe we are on the right footing at St Marys and our beloved Saints will be once again back higher up the table instead of flirting with relegation. Its also great to see Eastleigh doing well in the Conference and if you haven’t been down to the Silverlake for a game I would very much recommend it. I have been lucky enough to take in a lot of non League recently and I would also like to wish Sholing all the best for their rest of their campaign in the FA Vase. Well here’s to a busy few months ... till next time ...

Welcome Ralph Hasenhuttl Mr Tein Six years after signing the talented Mauricio Pochettino, Saints finally and almost literally pull a managerial rabbit out of the hat by signing Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuttl. Although six years back most fans were disappointed to see the parting of the ways with Nigel Adkins I think there was a sigh of relief this time around when Hughes was finally sacked. And what a breath of fresh air Ralph has been sweeping though the club with his new broom, turning over stones and refusing to let sleeping dogs lie. Not since Koeman have I truly liked a Saints manager but Ralph makes me smile. Before we knew anything about him we found out his name meant rabbit hutch. Ralph makes me laugh. His passion on the touchlines, forgetting to shake the opposing managers hand those little memes on twitter of him pressing the badge all fill me with joy. Ralph makes me ecstatic. That glorious home win against arsenal, fans punching the air and staying on after the final whistle singing and celebrating like we had won the FA Cup. Finally a manager to unite the fans and the club - hopefully! It does seem that finally, the club have woken up to the fact that we need a manager who has a real footballing philosophy, that can translate to the premier league and which the players and fans can identify with. With Pelegrino and Hughes players and fans alike seemed to struggle with quite was meant to be happening on the pitch and

what was actually happening was increasingly depressing and hard to watch. Now if Ralph can keep up the initial on and off pitch momentum he has created it is time for the club to provide some stability, at the very least in terms of managers. Between 1955 and 1991, a period of 36 years, Saints appointed only 3 managers, Ted Bates, Lawrie McMenemey and Chris Nichol. In the following 27 seasons we have appointed 23 first team managers (excluding 6 or 7 caretaker managers) not many of whom are still necessarily held in high esteem and some who did more harm than good. Here is the list:

Saints managers since Nichol.

Who are your favourites? Branfoot Ball Merrington Souness Jones Hoddle Gray Strachan Sturrock Wigley Redknapp Burley Pearson

Poortvliet Wotte Pardew Adkins Pochettino Koeman Puel Pellegrino Hughes Hasenhuttl

At time of writing, Ralph has won 4 games out of ten compared with three wins in 22 top-flight games for Mark Hughes when he was as dismissed in December. Tonight, snow allowing, we are set to Play Crystal Palace

team, he will also hear about that, in front of the other players. It doesn't matter who the player is, if it's the captain or someone else, it's not about how big he is for the team, every one player has to learn. The dressing room has to be clean. I put a picture on the wall. I take a picture because I am the mainly the last guy leaving this building in the evening so if I go through the dressing room and find some boots in the way - yeah.” I have to admit that so seamless was our improvement under the four coaches from Pardew to Koeman that I started to believe the coach was not so important. The club structure and recruitment was so good that any half decent coach would adopt the Southampton way and the journey would continue unabated. At least that is what I thought but the next 3 managers not only sabotaged our journey but the subsequent arrival of Mr Hasenhuttl has shown the coach makes a massive difference and is vital. It is quite clear too that he has an eye for a player. He quickly dispensed with Hoedt, where others had regularly picked him and brought Bardenek in from the cold and who is proving to be our best centre half. It is also exciting to see that Redmond, who stagnated for so long finally under previous managers is turning into the player that Pep Guardiola thought he should be. Remember that touching coaching after our game in Manchester? I’ve read that Hasenhuttl is a keen piano player and is awaiting the delivery of his own piano from Germany. Maybe its time for a Shane Long and Hasenhuttl performance of When the Saints to appear on you tube! And just maybe for the first time in 3 years, we do March on...
