Hello AND Land and welcome to the biggest ever edition of The AND Guide. Yes we’re growing! Oh how I’d love to remember who the smart arse business consultant was that told me when I started that newspapers were dead. Clearly not.

The last two months have actually been stupidly busy. I’ve been persuaded now that the paper is established, to re-energise Southampton Ambassadors, the network that fuels The AND Guide... not sure my wife is totally enamoured, she was hoping I was going to put my feet up. Anyway you can read all about it towards the back of the paper.

We’ve also decided to sponsor a charity fundraising phenomenon of a girl in the form of the newly crowned Miss Southampton aka the very pretty Isobelle Cooper. She’s on page 10. There’s loads of other cool, hopefully useful, entertaining and occasionally witty stuff throughout including our preview of Common People which sees the return of our fave pop son Craig David. AND of course our famous Diary. Everyday for the next 2 months packed with anything we could find out about for you.

Anyway, this issue I decided to make a bit of a green point. Why? Because I’m worried frankly. This is the only known planet to support life and we’re doing our best to make it like the others. Dead. So I started to think about how much life has changed anyway ... I hope it makes you think.

I'm a bit unusual. A city boy that grew up on a farm. When I was young my mother spent a lot of time in hospital so I went to stay with my grandparents for long periods of time in the hills of Herefordshire. There I learned to milk a goat, skin a rabbit, wax a duck (yes really) for market and walk 2 miles to the weekly bus that would take me the other 3 miles listening to leathery faced women in hats. My grandparents didn't have a car, he'll they didn't even have a bike, electricity or hot water. They had a carthorse named Kitty, a calorgas account and an arga, which was pretty much on the whole time during the colder months and an outside loo which sadly the arga couldn't influence. I remember wetting myself, literally, when the candle blew out and left me sitting in the pitch black listening to the tin roof try its best to be a kite.

Most of what they ate they grew, often fresh out of the garden that day or alive at lunchtime... well, just before. The few items such as butter, flour, cereals and chocolate they didn't make themselves, they got from

the town or traded with a neighbour. My Nan was a fantastic baker, jam maker and preparer of poultry for the table, regularly winning prizes. It wasn't hard to swap any of her produce for something from another farm. We ate well, as the postman that tucked into a full English on his weekly visit will testify. That is when he wasn't wiping the tomato sauce off his uniform. Well, I was only 6 and told to give it a good shake!

The point I'm making is this isn't some scene from a period movie, this is within my lifetime! It concerns me that if we as a species can come so far in just a generation, what the hell is the world going to be like in another 50 years? The world was a much bigger place even just 10 years ago.

Everybody didn't relax, work and rely on technology to get through the day. My grandparents found out what was going in the world via Radio 4 at sunrise during milking and at night after supper. They had no phone bleeping every 50 seconds to tell them what an unknown person in Peru had bought his dog for Canine's Got Talent day.

They didn't have a phone at all. They had a bag of change and a mile hike up a very steep hill to press button B every 30 seconds or queue up for the privilege.

Anyway I just thought I’d say. It’s all too quick. Too quick is another phrase for not enough thinking. Please can we all do some while we can?

In the last issue of the Andguide we featured a new venue that was opening in the centre of Southampton.

Two days prior I received an unexpected email from one of the co-owners, Jo, asking if I could recommend anyone to fill in for a band that had pulled out of their Saturday night slot…being the musical mercenary that I am I volunteered Thinker and even more unexpectedly, they agreed to take us on…little did they know what they were letting themselves in for!

Upon arriving my first impressions were just how well placed and easy to find it is (despite our best efforts as ‘out of Towner’s’ to get lost) and inside there is a very laid back, homely and relaxed vibe, spacious without being too big and everything was set out nicely. Although we didn’t actually sample the cuisine, the menu did look very tantalising and the drinks were first class too.

The stage set up was also very impressive, plenty of room to move about and throw some John Travolta-esque shapes on (if that’s your kind of thing) and the sound system was brilliant too. As a band that uses percussion rather than a full drum kit, all we had to do was plug in, tune up and sound-check.

els etc.) was done for us, which certainly made was a refreshing change from other places we have played at. In fact throughout the whole night the sound levels were absolutely perfect, which is half the battle for any band…whether you could say the same about the sounds that were emerging out of our instruments is another matter entirely!

As we propelled into the first of 2 ramshackle hour long sets of our original and traditional folk rock repertoire (coupled with Johnny Cash and Levellers covers) there were instantly members of the staff dancing at the front. This is not something that usually happens but their enthusiasm was infectious as it seemed to encourage others there to follow suit. As any performer will tell you it is a great buzz to see people dancing to and generally enjoying your music.

It was a hugely enjoyable gig and the audience were very appreciative throughout and very obviously open minded and into their music, so from that perspective it was a very rewarding experience for us too. It was just a shame that we could only play for 2 hours, I would quite happily have carried on playing for longer….although we would probably quite quickly have run out of songs to play!

Afterwards all performers are requested to sign the grand white piano at the side of the stage and our scrawls now feature alongside Cat Eliza T’s Andguide favourite Ben Dlugokecki’s and other such luminaries who have performed there to date.

The next couple of months will see the likes of singer songwriter Steve Lowis, blues rockers Bad Dog, Irish folksters The Croppies, multi-instrumentalist She Makes War and covers bands Mista Messy and the M27s gracing the stage. There will also be the ‘Make a Note’ open mic night starting up on Wednesdays where you can bring your guitar along and have a go yourself. Take it from me, if you are a solo performer or are in a band this is a great place to play, the audience is enthusiastic, the sound is top notch and the staff were very affable and fervent about what they do…oh and we were given free drinks all night, that alone is enough to win Thinker over!

If you are someone who enjoys watching superb music in an easy-going and friendly atmosphere then I would also recommend it to you, but don’t just take it from me get down there and find out for yourself.

Thinker may not have hit all the right notes but Notes café are certainly doing all the right things to make their venue a success…here’s hoping that their success continues.

Steely Dan tribute play Hangar Farm Arts Centre Wednesday 18 May 9 - 11pm

CHARITY RACE NIGHT

GOLF DAY On 17th March Irish eyes were certainly smiling as 40 golfers met in Milan Restaurant for a full Irish breakfast with all the trimmings to fuel them for the day ahead.

After 18 holes, of which Bill Webb managed to join in (he's no spring chicken anymore!), Golfers and their partners donned their finest Emerald green outfits and hats to sit down to traditional Irish Stew and Colcanon served up beautifully by my wife Ann-Marie and Kate Mcrae who went back to their catering roots for the evening! Thank you both for your hard work. Thanks also to Bill for allowing them both to work from his kitchen, amazing what can come out of there !!!

After dinner there were prizes, a raffle and plenty of Irish tunes and Guinness!

The winner of the golf was Aj Lakhpuri and 2nd was John Crocombe who both played out of their skin I'd like to thank everyone that took part in the day, along with Roger Tomey from My time for the reduced green fees for the day and special thanks to both John Meacher £300 and David Pym £25 for their very generous donations towards the charity.

All in all the day was a great success and good craic!

We raised a grand total of £1,013 which was amazing so thank you all, the luck of the Irish was defiantly with us.

We are now well on our way to reaching our target of £5,000.00 to cover the cost of the refurbishment of the children's echo room at Southampton General Hospital which is fantastic.

More than just another ‘tribute’ band, Steely Scam is a showpiece for the cool, complex and intellectual music of Steely Dan. DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT STEELY DAN? Fagen and Becker were jazz fans who had no use for rock until they heard the Beatles. For Fagen, it was ‘Ticket to Ride’; for Becker, ‘No Reply.’ Becker still doesn’t like rock if there aren’t enough chord changes. Becker and Fagen met at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson in upstate New York. The school, and the town, served as the setting in ‘My Old School.’ Comedian Chevy Chase also attended Bard and played drums in Becker and Fagen’s band, the Leather Canary. When ‘Do It Again’ was released in 1972, it was credited on the sleeve as a traditional song even though it was written by Becker and Fagen. “You should never believe anything it ever says on a Steely Dan record,” says Fagen. “It’s mostly a bunch of lies and bulls— that we write just to confuse the listener.” ‘Pretzel Logic’ is about time travel. “When it says, ‘I stepped up on the platform / The man gave me the news,’ we conceived the platform as a teleportation device,” Fagen says. “And there are other key lines like ‘I’ve never met Napoleon but I plan to find the time.’ What we’re actually saying is I plan to find the time in that he lived in.” When Michael McDonald joined Steely Dan in 1975, providing background vocals and keyboards, Fagen voted to make him lead singer but was vetoed. Even Becker and Fagen don’t know what some of their obscure expressions mean. “Walter and I enjoy making up our own slang,” says Fagen. “In ‘Josie,’ a street gang uses a weapon called a ‘battle apple.’ I don’t know what that is, but it sounded better than anything else we could come up with.”

February 6th saw my second fundraining event - a race night held at Bowlers. Over 100 people gathered for a chance to try thier luck on the horses, whilst raising funds for the refurbishment of the children's Echo Room located on ward E1, Southampton General Hospital.

Peter Allen hosted the evening encouraging guests to part with their cash by backing their favourite horses by even naming a few of them after one or two of the golfers! Kate McRae was also on hand as Peter's trusty side kick!

It was great to see a packed clubhouse full of members, thier partners and guests alike all cheering on their horses. Over the course of the evening we enjoyed a total of eight races and an Auction lead by Bill Webb, where a total of £50.00 was raised on one item kindly donated by Kevin & Kate Bouault. The second item, a rocking horse, kindly donated by Patricia Whitlock (Dean Roles Mother) has been kept for re-auction on a future event.

After the races, auction, £2.00 charity donation per ticket sold and a final whip round with the charity bucket at the end of the evening, we raised a very generous total of £913.96!

A big thank you to all those who attended. I hope you will join me on the next event on 17th March as we celebrate St . Patricks day. Keep an eye out for the posters in the clubhouse . Bill has even agreed to discounted Guinness and beers!!

Why your marketing is like a heart attack waiting to happen I speak to many business owners whose cash flow is stretched to the limit. The cause is usually slow paying clients and they’re reluctant to take action against them. Their solution is to trade their way out their late payment problem, to focus on their marketing and winning new business.

But this strategy rarely works and in most cases it makes the situation worse.

LET ME EXPLAIN WHY. We’ve all heard the expression “cash flow is the lifeblood of a business” but have you ever stopped to think about what this really means?

All businesses need cash. Cash is needed to pay staff, suppliers and other overheads. Cash flows in and out of your business. Without it, your business stops. This is why it’s the lifeblood of a business and why you must do all you can to protect it.

BUT DO YOU? Let’s face it, when you’re in business you’re pulled in a hundred and one different directions. You deal with the issues that you think are most urgent, so you don’t give your credit control systems the priority they deserve. You don’t see the damage that’s building up on the inside.

When you try to fix the cash flow problems you do so by working harder. You focus your efforts on your marketing and winning new business and to start with, this appears to work. You get busier and busier and you’re sure this will generate the extra cash you need.

You may even need to take on more staff to cope with the extra demand but this increases your overheads. If the new clients don’t pay on time, or you’re doing more and more work for the slow payers in the hope that they will pay, your cash flow will be stretched to the limit.

It really is that simple - Isn't it?

Let's say you control a venue (A Pub, Theatre etc), And it's you that has to balance what you spend on entertainment - That means you're the guy that has to turn the amount of money you have into a bigger amount through the assets your gaff offers.

You sell beer, maybe food, and maybe even accommodation. You have an adequate space for entertainment (A further topic methinks) and your decor and furnishings are to your liking.

What you need is punters.

There are many, many ways to entice the general public to spend money over your counter - Sometimes it's as simple as being 'The New Kid On The Block' or blessed with a fantstic view from the beer garden, but more often than not it's about the taste and quality of what you sell - The beer being the right temperature, a good range of drinks to suit most palettes - a chef that really knows his way around a kitchen even - so why spoil it all by booking Malcolm and The Macaroons, with their guest singer Mary Hinge just because they're only £100 a night.

That creates a weak link in your chain of business.

If an act is cheap there is probably a reason for it, and no amount of reasoning can convince me that 'any entertainment' is better than 'no entertainment' - especially when you are booking someone who has failed at creating a good name for themselves.

You may even find that customers stay away to avoid beinjg embroiled in the embarrasment.

Ask your locals who they want to see - even a local friendly celeb might be up for a good intimate gig - and stump up the readies.

Your entertainment standard has shot up, The people who come to see the good acts will follow, and your pot of gold gets bigger, especially as some new customers now have you on their casual radar.

If you’re not getting paid for the work you’ve already done, your marketing is like a heart attack waiting to happen - and this could be fatal for your business.

A lack of cash can be the reason why a profitable business is forced to close, but equally, the ability to generate cash can be the reason why a loss making business is turned around.

When cash flow becomes tight, the automatic reaction of most business owners is to double their efforts on selling more. They think that focusing on their marketing and winning new business is the best use of their time.

But it’s not. Getting paid for the work you have already done is the best use of your time.

THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY As you provide your services and submit your invoices, some will be paid on time and some (probably most) wont. The clients that pay on time are good healthy clients for your business but the slow payers are like the burger and chips in your diet.

If your diet consists mainly of burger and chips (i.e, most of your clients don’t pay on time), you know you can never be healthy.

Your business will have some cash flowing through its systems but the late payments are like the fatty deposits and plaque that blocks your arteries and stops the blood flowing.

To start with you might not notice the effect the unpaid invoices are having on your business but gradually your cash flow will get tighter and tighter. Just like the bad diet when you start gaining a little excess

All of a sudden the heart attack strikes. You don’t have enough cash to pay your suppliers or to meet payroll and you’re left wondering what happened.

This is why you can’t trade your way out of a late payment problem.

Focusing on your marketing is like eating more and more fast food. Yes, there may be a bit more salad with it, but you’re not addressing the real problem.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? You need a fitness regime for your business. You need to put your business on a diet (stop taking on problem clients) and start clearing the blockages in your cash flow by improving your credit control procedures.

There are so many good reasons to go and see music live. Watching live music can not only be enjoyable, emotional, energetic, spirit lifting and stress relieving, it can also be extremely inspiring. Countless bands were formed on the back of seeing seminal shows by the likes of David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, The Sex Pistols, The Stone Roses, The Smiths and Led Zeppelin, to name just a few. Being at a gig however large or small, can make you feel like you are part of something special that you are sharing with other like-minded people. It will help you to appreciate the effort that artists put into their art and by going to their gigs you will be supporting them in that.

As New Zealand singer songwriter Gin Wigmore once quoted, 'It's easy listening to a record, but a live performance is so personal and real’… and there are many great opportunities, whatever your tastes, to go out and experience some 'personal and real' live performances in April and May.

Barry Upton Our resident pop guru Barry is a multi international hit songwriter/producer/performer. Initially a front singer with Brotherhood Of Man he’s worked with a multitude of household names including being creator of the lovable pop outfit STEPS, penning their massive hit 5678 and his mate and editor of this ‘ere paper previously co-hosting the AND Magazine Show on Radio Hampshire. He’s currently a TV & radio presenter and producer in Thailand and of course he’s still performing!

EUROpe – IN OR OUT? Every year in May there is a TV programme which has one of the biggest audiences of the year - worldwide!

Yes, it’s the Eurovision Song Contest which is a bit like Marmite, you either love it or hate it.

So how would you vote? Should the UK be IN or OUT? The contest has been broadcast every year for sixty years, since its inauguration in 1956, and is one of the longest-running television programmes in the world. It is also one of the most watched nonsporting events, with audience figures having been quoted in recent years as anything between 100 and 600 million internationally. Eurovision has also been broadcast outside Europe to several countries that do not compete, such as the USA and China. An exception was made in 2015, when Australia was allowed to compete as a guest entrant as part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the event. It seems those Aussies are massive fans of the event.

There have been a number of Eurovision artists and groups whose careers were directly launched into the spotlight following their win. Notable examples were ABBA, who won the contest for Sweden in 1974 with their song "Waterloo", and went on to become one of the most successful bands of all time, and the French Canadian singer Céline Dion, who won the contest for Switzerland in 1988 with "Ne partez pas sans moi", which subsequently helped

launch her international career.

Not to mention Brotherhood Of Man … (ok … later).

Ireland holds the record for the highest number of wins, having won the contest seven times - including four times in five years in ‘92, ‘93, ‘94 and ‘96. Sweden is second with six wins. France, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom are joint third with five wins.

The United Kingdom holds the record for the highest number of runner-up placings, coming in second on no less than 15 occasions as of 2015.

The last time the UK won it was nearly 20 years ago with Katrina and her Waves singing ‘Love Shine A Light’.

I myself have serious Eurovision credentials after being a member of Brotherhood Of Man who won in 1976 with the, to date, biggest ever selling winning song after topping the charts in 36 countries with ‘Save Your Kisses For Me’ and being a finalist personally as a writer in the Song For Europe ‘83.

I also musically directed 1982 winners Bucks Fizz for a short while.

Also, together with your illustrious editor, was invited to join as guest performers one night in a spoof Eurovision theatre show at the Mayflower called ‘Eurobeat’. I think Martin will join me in stating that it was one of the funniest shows ever with our appearance as

the UK judges er … memorable.

As far as the actual Eurovision, I’m in the ‘IN’ category as I love the spectacle of the event plus a chance to see how different countries approach the writing and presentation of their entries sometimes hilariously. AND it’s always fun to try to pick the winner. However, I can see why people would vote ‘OUT’ as after the early 80s and the advent of ‘gimmicks’, arguably started by Bucks Fizz, the actual song was not the most important ingredient to bring on a win.

In the old days, it was a thumping ‘Boom A Bang A Biff Boff’ style of song which titillated the senses of Europe, but in recent years it’s been lots of drums and dance rhythms that have been the most successful.

Love it or hate it, IN or OUT, the contest is a great way for a songwriter to earn some quick dosh with numerous plays on TV worldwide which will bring in large amounts of performance royalties plus a successful performing artist can gain so much from the exposure.

I learned from my Brotherhood of Man colleagues that the BBC TV producer, who was travelling to the Hague with them in ’76, stated that 2nd will do. Why? Because the winning country has to host the next years’ event costing far more than if the show is taken from another country’s broadcaster.

So, we all want to win, but the BBC does not.

This year they have been forced back into having a UK televised final with the public voting for this year’s entry "You're Not Alone" written by Matt Schwartz, Justin J. Benson and S. Kanes. The song, which will be performed by Joe and Jake, in my opinion is a well written one and if it was only about the song, could stand a great chance. However, with tactical and political voting by many countries, it probably won’t happen. No matter, it will be fun to watch as always.

Miss England the next step for fundraising supergirl!

Isabelle Cooper is an impressive young lady. At just 18 years the hairdresser and beauty therapist from Southampton is reaching for Miss England in a bid to raise awareness for local charities and improve her own self-confidence. With the Miss Southampton title under her belt already, she has a great chance of doing so.

In the last twelve months she’s raised an incredible £22,000 for local Southampton charities, and all before claiming the title of Miss Southampton. Even more impressively the fundraising was achieved through small events such as car washes, cake sales, race nights and other similar events. Now armed with her new title she is more determined than ever to raise even more money in the future.

Interestingly Isabelle’s sister was the one to find the competition and encourage her to give it a go. Keen to improve her self-confidence after suffering really bad anxiety as a child, she decided to enter.

Although her sister suggested it, Isobelle’s mum is her role model and the reason she entered. “Mum is extremely hard working”says Isabelle. “She inspires me to work hard and give commitment to my fundraising.”

Isabelle’s most important goal is to continue to raise money for good causes while creating new friendships with all types of people. If she is lucky enough to win Miss England, she hopes to have the opportunity to experience exciting new things while continuing to boost her self-belief.

“Being awarded Miss Southampton felt overwhelming ” she says. “I’m looking forward to using the title to be a positive role model for other local young women. If I can add Miss England I would hope to do the same across the country”.

Isabelle competes in the semifinal of Miss England in June. After speaking to her and seeing how much effort she has put in, I and everybody at The AND Guide wish her good luck!

As a lover of all things travel I love to attend as many training sessions, webinars and events as I can to improve my knowledge and help me to advise my lovely clients as best I can. So this week I pottered off to Cam’s Mill at Fareham and had a great session with my fellow local Travel Counsellors about luxury holidays to Mauritius. Now we all need some luxury in our life even if it’s just for a special occasion! So I thought I would send you off into the world of 5* food, service and facilities.

Mauritius is a beautifully diverse island dotted next to Madagascar in the gorgeous serene waters of the Indian Ocean. I have been lucky enough to be visit Mauritius and all I loved the fact that the island offered so much. The Island is 12 hours flight from the UK but due to its location only 4 hours ahead so no jetlag which is great for those who suffer! The official language is English but many residents speak French and Creole so you can imagine the culture is very diverse. The interior of the island is mountainous with a tropical climate whilst the coast is littered with white sandy beaches and aqua blue seas – from one extreme to another! The best time of year to visit is between March and June and September and December where the temperature will be at least 25 degrees and up; although our summer months of July and August are also great months with little rainfall but slightly cooler temperatures.

The lovely chap that was representing the luxury holiday company was so passionate and well versed about the island and the hotels they offer that it’s fair to say I was sold!! So I decided to talk about Mauritius will try to convey some of that passion and enthusiasm in my article and hopefully you guys may feel like I did!!!

The hotels on Mauritius are as truly stunning as the scenery and offer something for everyone. A few that I want to mention are the Shandrani which enjoys a great location on a private peninsular down on the South East coast and the Trou Aux Biches situated on the best beach in Mauritius on the North West coast. 7 MAGICAL THINGS TO TRY IN MAURITIOUS 1) TRY THE STREET FOOD Mauritian Street Food is amongst the best in the world! A unique mix of Creole, African, Indian, and Chinese influences, the dishes offer bursts of intricate flavours. Where else would you find a French bouillon laced with Indian spices?

2) HIRE A CAR AND DRIVE AROUND

3) VISIT TEA PLANTATIONS

Renting a car isn’t very popular in Mauritius. Most tourists prefer to move around. However we would suggest renting a car if you’re even a tad bit adventurous.

Just a word of caution - don’t rely GPS in Mauritius (unless you want to end up in a sugarcane field with a stray rabbit for company!). Ask for directions – English is widely understood and spoken and Mauritians are used to giving directions to tourists.

Try renting a car with a local Mauritian company to save money.

Imagine being the only people on a winding road surrounded by tea plantations and enveloped with fog. The miseen-scene at Bois Cheri Tea Plantations is indeed magical.

If you’re a tea enthusiast you could take a guided tour through the tea plantation. Make sure you dine at their terrace restaurant – it offers stunning panoramic views of inland Mauritius and an extensive variety of teas on the menu.

Le Mauricia which sits in a fab location on the North West tip of the island in the bustling village of Grand Baie.

The Shandrani is a fantastic hotel that offers guests an all-inclusive experience with four fantastic restaurants, a blissful Clarins Spa, Free kids club and even a sailing club!! The hotel has 3 beaches one of which is called ‘Wild Beach’ where the watersports are plentiful. The rooms are beautifully light and airy and many have a delightful beachfront setting.

Those with bigger families can enjoy space in the hotels 2 bedroom apartments. This hotel which is classed as a 4*+ has so much to offer guests that I’d love to go here myself!!

The other hotel I love is Trou Aux Biches (pronounced ‘trow-beesh’). This resort is renowned for its laid-back luxury with exceptional hospitality – so much so that the General manager Fatima will remember your name after meeting you only once! The beautiful hotel has 6 restaurants serving Creole and Mediterranean dishes as well as Indian and Thai food. The calm seas and white sandy beaches at Trou Aux Biches make it a truly romantic setting for weddings and honeymoons; plus with all-suite accommodation you can relax in the most amazing surroundings,

4) WALK THROUGH SUGARCANE FIELDS IN INLAND MAURITIUS Vast expanses of sugarcane fields are amongst the first things one notices about the island. They seem to go on miles and offer a stunning backdrop to drives on the island. Sugarcane has a long history in Mauritius. It was introduced to the country by Dutch colonisers, popularised by the French, and developed by the British as the primary crop in Mauritius during the nineteenth century.

MILBURYS CC April is here, and so too the cricket season at last!

After a winter spent hibernating, the summer cannot come too soon for our pub cricket team. We have been practicing every week since Christmas in the indoor nets at the Ageas Bowl (or Rosebowl to give it its proper name), and while the flat indoor nets are good, they are nothing compared to playing outside... on grass, sometimes.

This year we’ve had a brilliant turnout in the nets, regularly having ten or more people along to every session, which is obviously handy because it shows that we might have enough players to field a whole team come the first game! This level of enthusiasm is very important because, as the season goes on, it becomes harder and harder to find eleven people who want to play cricket on a Sunday afternoon or a midweek evening. The practicalities of life - be it families, holidays or not being able to swing another Sunday away from our dearest often take their toll on our numbers, and having an excess of available players in April and May soon turns into desperate struggles to field a side come August and September. Our squad numbers eighteen players this year, but once the summer holi-

day starts you can guarantee that we’ll be grateful to turn up to a match with ten, no matter their age or gender, and certainly regardless of whether they’ve ever played cricket before. Actual cricketing ability is low on the list of criteria for eligible players once we hit the holidays! It’s a captain’s worse nightmare to have to call the opposition and tell them that you’ve got to cancel because you haven’t been able to beg, borrow or bully enough people together to make a team.

So what does spring bring for our team?

Well if like me you are perennially frustrated with your ability to turn yourself from the cricketer you are into the cricketer you want to be, then it’s a time of hope and optimism.

The disappointments of the previous season are always washed away by the winter and replaced with renewed hope for the coming season; perhaps this might be the year that it all clicks into place? It hasn’t yet, but hope springs eternal!

money from their players to keep going. This is where a good treasurer is vital for a pub cricket team, and luckily we’ve got one of the best. Geoff has kept things running smoothly behind the scenes for years, making sure we’ve got enough money for balls, kit, pitch fees, tours and everything else that we need. He’s brilliant at raising funds for the club, some might even say ruthless, particularly those who have ended up with a load of raffle tickets they didn’t want or a Milburys umbrella they didn’t need, but somehow were convinced to buy them anyway! This year Geoff has been busy sorting out some lovely new shirts and we are very grateful to Bespoke Building and Restoration, The Southampton Arms and DBS Financial Services who have all kindly sponsored us. The support of these local businesses is very much appreciated.

Spring is also the time to finalise and send out the fixture list. This is normally the role of the fixtures secretary, but I’ve somehow been encumbered with this responsibility ever since the team started and have never managed to convince anybody else to take it on. We have a great set of games this year, at some lovely grounds around Winchester and Southampton, including Bishops Waltham, Droxford, Michelmersh & Timsbury, and Cheriton to name a few.

There really are some beautiful cricket grounds in Hampshire.

Lastly, there’s always a real sense of excitement in the team about the start of a new season, and this year is no exception.

In fact we’ve got a particularly good group of players and more importantly a great group of people, and I think there’s real potential for us to do well this year. We’ve welcomed a few newish players into the squad which has boosted our numbers, and the quality I’ve seen in the nets so far has been excellent. Even if I do so say myself… we’re looking good! I really hope we can translate that into some early season victories and make the most of all the energy and enthusiasm I’ve seen at practice. If we do, I’m sure I’ll have some great matches to tell you about next time. Oh yes and fines… the highlight of any match, of course I’ll be putting our camaraderie to the test by telling you about those too!

Do come and see us if the sun is shining and you really can’t face the garden. We play at the Holt, Salt Lane, Upham Nr Bishops Waltham and will happily break out one of our 4 deckchairs to take your mind of the cricket!

LEE "SCRATCH" PERRY AND MAD PROFESSOR The Brook 27 March 27 2016 The word legend gets bandied about a bit too much for me, but Lee Perry is one man who thoroughly deserves it, although he'd probably laugh it off and light another cigarette.

At 80 he can do what he likes ... and what he likes is playing music.

For two hours, this frail old man, this mighty lion, this originator of the entire dub scene, this unexpected singer held the audience in the palm of his hand at The Brook. A packed Brook too, I might add.

Emerging in a haze of smoke wearing an outfit Jimmy Savile would've thought twice about, this duppy conqueror rocked the joint, nimbly striding around the stage controlling proceedings as he skipped through a tiny percentage of his extraordinary back catalogue.

With a bejewelled baseball cap on his head, some of the weirdest trousers I've ever seen, a pair of the mightiest of boots - as he liked to remind us - and a strange microphone seemingly wrapped up in a 7Up can, Lee "Scratch" Perry sang about life, love, loss, smoking, Jah, Jesus, sex, the sun and the moon and everything else in between .. but mostly about sex. And Jesus.

I've never laughed so hard, so long at a music gig, but this one was actually funnier than a few stand-ups I've endured in the past.

Looking around the venue all I could see was joy on the face of everyone present and everyone I could see was dancing.

With the excellent Mad Professor's DJ set being a draw in itself - and it really could've been an allnighter on its own - this was a wonderfully uplifting night of reggae, dub and soul, true soul in every sense of the word.

The band was tighter than tight and the set-list like a greatest hits of Jamaica.

You could feel his influence on modern dance music as well as the likes of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.

The Brook's sound system also deserves a mention at this point : the bass was amazing, especially during the Mad Professor show. It had that hard-hitting quality where you feel it in your solar plexus as it almost literally pushes you to dance, poking you in the chest saying "Are you just gonna stand there ??"

The trademark vocal refrains of Mad P's sound - where it sounds like a voice is being hurled across the room were stunning live, with the singer sweeping around the sound system from left to right and front to back.

I love it as a venue anyway, but on nights like this it's hard to beat you're really THERE !

And they've got a pretty stellar line-up coming up in the next weeks and months too.

Highlights in April include ska heroes The Beat, award-winning folk act, 9Bach, and a Kate Bush tribute (Cloudbusting), while in May Paul Young and Midge Ure make welcome returns (not on the same night, I hasten to add) and there's the Bowie-tribute The Jean Genie, so you can expect that one to be a sell-out.

JOHN GRANT The 02 Southampton 4 February 2016 A bit like watching a football match as a neutral, sometimes it's good to go to a gig not really knowing what to expect.

Of course, it could be an unmitigated disaster if you don't like the genre, but thankfully I was invited to see John Grant by an old friend who'd also worked in record shops for many, many years. "Trust me - you'll love it!" were the immortal words as he thrust the ticket in my hand by way of a birthday present and strode on in to the 02 ... or The Guildhall as I shall forever call it.

I'd deliberately avoided doing the things any normal person would do beforehand, like look up some of his music online or read his wikipedia entry. To me, John Grant could've been standing next to me at the bar prior to walking on stage and I

never would've known. But his audience .. wow. They know him and they love him.

I've been to lots of gigs where people know the hits and the choruses and sing along, but only a few - Gary Numan springs to mind for some reason - where everyone knows every single line of every single song. This was one of them.

What little I did know was that Grant is a singer-songwriter and a bitter and twisted gay man. I expected a kind of maudlin, ballad-heavy set, maybe a bit of shoe-gazing from an introverted, thoughtful waspish dandy. What I got was a rousing, cavorting, energetic and eclectic set from a big, bearded bear of a man clearly high on life. Miserable ?

Not in the slightest. So he'd had a few bad break-ups ?

Who hasn't ? It didn't stop him from writing some brilliantly optimistic songs about it all ..

There were tender moments and a couple of songs solo on the piano, but for the most part, the set was synth-heavy, bordering on New Wave. There was a kind of dance ethos behind it all, but never in a Daft Punk kind of a way more Depeche Mode does disco on the bigger numbers.

There were elements of Bowie, The Human League, even Kraftwerk, but mostly I thought about The Associates and the tragic loss of Billy MacKenzie, another gay singer with a lot to say.

The link between them was the voice. Both are charismatic performers with an air of mystery and both had the ability to use their own unique voices as an instrument in itself.

While Billy Mac evoked another age of candlelit jazz singers like Billy Holiday and had a range to match, if not surpass, Freddie Mercury, Grant has a much deeper voice and boy, does he know how to use it.

There were moments when the band wasn't playing a note and it was just him, staring out at the crowd, rumbling the first few lines of a song as the words came thundering out from some place deep within him. It was like a kettle drum solo as he launched into another darkly humorous tale of lost love and missed opportunities.

The stand-out track for me was Disappointing with its haunting melody and the killer line "There's nothing more beautiful than your smile as it conquers your face".

Suffice to say I've bought a couple of his albums since and haven't been disappointed in any way. An excellent gig from a consumate showman.

BOOKS red & rit The rain is pelting down outside, the winds are howling through the trees and the clouds have kidnapped the skyline, yes you guessed its a scenario synonymous with the clocks going forward and the supposed end of winter.

So, before the search begins for the shorts and sun cream to enjoy the delights of the English climate take some time out to enjoy another intriguing, compelling and downright odd case courtesy of Christopher Fowler and

Bryant and May: Strange Tide (Doubleday £ 16.99). This

Christopher Hitchens, the prolific writer and essayist par excellence died in 2011, far too young but after a life well lived. Since his untimely death the majority of his life’s work has been republished in several celebratory tomes,

And Yet… Essays (Atlantic Books £ 20.00/ eBook £15.), there is more! The collection is billed as the last of the last of the uncollected essays, and there are some gems in this volume which are all driven by the force of his powerful personality. On any given subject, Hitchens argues, and almost batters the reader with opinion and that is no bad thing. His arguments are always eloquent, reasoned and written with such style, wit and passion that the reader comes away breathless at the strength of the written voice put across in spellbinding prose. In life we have lost Christopher Hitchens but he lives on in a body of work that will sit on

many a shelf evermore.

Continuing with the theme of great columnists, here is a memoir from one that is still around. A. A. Gill though, from reading by his own admission, a somewhat unreliable account of the year that signalled the end of his first marriage and when he gave up drinking; it wasn’t always certain he would or could survive. In Pour Me A

Life (Weidenfeld and Nicolson £ 20.00, eBook £10.99) the demon drink nearly takes him away for good. This tale is a story made up of fragments of memory and the strongest and most raw are Gill’s vivid recollections of the first days of rehab when he was denied the alcoholic’s comfort of the artificial oblivion that the emptying of a bottle of spirits or the sinking of a can of strong lager bring on.

Throughout this memoir the author is keen to stress that he has no message to give, no hope for the people who still struggle with various addictions. This is his story; he has come through the darkness and has stitched together the shreds of his life from that time and earlier.

The existence of the then 1970’s and early 1980’s Adrian Anthony Gill still haunt him and thirty years on is worried

he may one day bump into him again.

Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s, the word novelisation was very popular. It was used by publishing houses around the globe to describe a TV series or film the script/ screenplay which had turned into prose, a novel. They were incredibly popular, everything from The Professionals, Emmerdale Farm, to Crossroads (yes really!) got the prose treatment.

By far and away the most successful were the Star Trek and Doctor Who ones, the latter in their various forms as Target Books went on to sell over eight million copies in their original 21 year lifespan.

Along the way there were a few casualties. At one time Douglas Adams worked on Doctor Who as script editor and was responsible for scripting three TV stories. It was certainly thought at the time he would eventually novelise these to add to the ever growing range of titles. This was put on the backburner when Douglas took himself

by surprise and became a worldwide bestselling author with millionaire status thanks to the success of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The novelisations never materialised when it became clear that the advance that the publisher of the Doctor Who books could offer Douglas, didn’t scratch the surface of the money pot that was welcoming the royalties from the adventures of Arthur Dent and Marvin the Paranoid Android. Sadly, Adams died prematurely and suddenly aged 49 in 2001 so it looked like the Who tales would never see the light of day. In recent years all this has changed and the Adams estate has given permission for the stories to become novelised. The latest to hit the bookshelves is City of Death (BBC books £7.99) a glorious tale of stolen Mona Lisa’s, and an alien disguising himself as a suave Count. Mix in The Doctor and his assistant Romana, add a brave hearted Bulldog Drummond like detective, sprinkle with delightful humour, top and

tail with the bouquet of the Parisian Spring circa 1979 and you have a great story.

Author James Goss brings this much loved TV tale to life and the book fills in the much needed gap left in the childhood of the serial Doctor Who book collector. Back in the day we early adolescent fans were all alone in our bedrooms twiddling incessantly with our home made sonic screwdrivers mourning the lack of this story on our bookshelves. Now, Life the Universe and Everything is complete and my inner Geek has certainly been outed and is singing and dancing around the room to I Am what I Am. Actually there is still demand for the old Target books of old as BBC Books have just reissued seven more of the classic series titles all at £6.99. Good.

Film Review Paul Ridge

award There are filmmakers & there are filmmakers

KAJAKI Modern British war film set in Afghanistan, telling the true story of a group of squaddies stationed on a mine-infested hill-top overlooking a road through the desert.

As a nation largely defined by war, I find it strange that we rarely make films about them anymore. Apart from The Patrol and '71, I can't remember any from the last few years, which is perhaps why Kajaki feels so important. That, and the fact that it's a superbly crafted picture telling a very real and very moving story. If you thought Fury was an intense and claustrophobic tale of an American tank crew during the Second World War, Kajaki is even more visceral, putting you smack bang in the middle of a group of comrades in arms. Even though most of the story takes place outdoors on a path through the hills of Afghanistan, you feel trapped with nowhere to move, let alone run.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

The film opens with a glorious sequence of a man floating in a lake, shot from below. The water is clear and blue and the sun is shining above him and all is peaceful. It's like a trippy music video from the 90s ... and then the action begins and you're jolted back to reality.

It is a beautiful lake, but it's in a worn torn wilderness and the man is a soldier using the dip as much as a bath as a leisure activity.

Stationed on top of a hill overlooking Kajaki dam, the year is 2006, the man is called Tug and he's the doctor for this particular motley crew of soldiers, most of whom are from the provinces : there's a couple of Glaswegians, a northerner, a geordie and a Bristolian among what amounts to a typically assorted band of British brothers. Running desperately short of ammo and batteries for their communications system, the squad is rightly hacked off with the supply chain but pull together as a group. As a new signalman arrives bringing with him some precious supplies of water and mail from home, the fact he doesn't have what they really need only adds to the bitterness.

The banter flows, the sun shines, boredom reigns and the dust gets everywhere .. welcome to Kajaki, son.

Down in the valley a mile or two away is what appears to be a barn or storage building and during the night the local Taliban ferry in supplies of some kind : possibly munitions, more likely fuel. Just up the road they set up a blockade and begin extorting the few travelers on the dusty thoroughfare, demanding money to let them pass.

Communications again break down between the base and regional headquarters and the troops decide to take matters into their own hands. With civilians in proximity of the target, they can't use mortars so a trio of men are despatched to move closer to the checkpoint to take out the Taliban with sniper fire instead.

A plan is made and everyone is on alert as the three men move slowly down the hillside to their new location behind some rocks on the escarpment. There's no danger of mines on the actual slopes, but the Russian laid enough of the damned things anywhere flat so they know to be cautious as they approach a wadi leading down to the sniping spot.

And that's about all I am willing to divulge at this point for fear of spoilers.

Kajaki is a moving and immersive story with some beautiful cinematography, an excellent and hyper-real script, stellar performances from a largely - and deliberately - unknown cast and is about as far removed from a Hollywood war movie as is possible to be.

Everything that happens on the screen is true - the soldiers who actually went through it all were consultants for the film - and there's no glory-seeking heroics.

This is the plain and brutal truth of life in the army, of modern warfare and of a squaddy's lot in life, warts and all. It is not Pearl Harbour.

Some have compared it to American Sniper, which unfortunately was released at the same time and pretty much over-shadowed Kajaki. The Warner Bros. production blew more than $30m in three weeks on US TV advertising alone, so to say its marketing spend dwarfed the British film's entire production budget is a bit like brandishing a knife at a cruise missile. The Bradley Cooper film did go on to be the biggest American movie of 2014 and was in its own way a very good picture, and I hope our plucky British effort will get some more screentime across the pond following a re-brand to Kilo Two Bravo (it was felt a less "Taliban" name might help).

Over here, Kajaki is enjoying a little more success despite being tied to a limited theatrical run through a deal with the Vue cinema chain. The producers know it has a long shelf-life and are happy to allow it to grow through word of mouth, social media and critical acclaim and their aims will no doubt be more readily achieved now that the BBC have got on board by buying three screenings for British TV for 2016.

The DVD is already selling well and is available from Amazon for £5, with a small percentage of the proceeds going towards British servicemen's charities including The Royal British Legion. With the help of such organisations, Kajaki should reach a wider audience and I believe it deserves to, not only because it's a superb film but because it also acts as an homage to our brave men and women serving their country at home and abroad. No matter what your feelings are on the subject of war, the military or the politics behind either, as a nation we are united in our admiration and respect for what the people on the ground - or in the air or at sea go through every day in the name of our country.

The producer revealed that prior to the official premier of Kajaki, the original soldiers in the story were invited to a private screening in Leicester Square. Some of them hadn't seen each other since that fateful day, a few having left the army while others continued to serve. He went on to say that between them they bought a case of beer and shut the door to watch the movie together, once more as a unit. When they emerged with the production team and cast all on tenterhooks, they were relieved that to a man they felt it was an accurate and vivid portrayal of events that day.

It's not often that we cover a movie that's been out for a while but Kajaki is special in many ways and we want people to continue to spread the word.

Often hilarious, but at times harrowing, Kajaki is a strange combination of depressing and life-affirming at the same time. While it leaves you despairing for the world we live in, it is ultimately the most uplifting film I've seen for years and it is a great British film that needs to be seen.

Celluloid tales by our resident flick producer/director/writer/critic bloke I'm very proud to announce that my good friend and mentor Howard J Ford has just won the prestigious ‘Best Independent Film’ accolade at the National Film Awards for thriller ‘Never Let Go’.

Howard, a handsome debonair 40 year old, enigmatic, charming, suave, energetic yet seasoned filmmaker is destined for the big time, always was but took his time.

He cowrote and directed four previous features with the equally sophisticated Jon Ford, elder brother and the incredibly talented Director of Photography.

The first of their slate (Mainline Run) was the screen debut of Full Monty’s Hugo Speer. The film was underrepresented though, a dark ‘dayin-life-of’ edge of your seat journey, moving jaw-deep through the effluent dismal sludge of junkies willing to kill to get their fix. It wasn’t a feelgood factor flick- but it was raw and powerful and arty and twenty years ahead of its time.

Next came ‘Distant Shadow’... a highly polished more Hollywood styled, more grown-up spy thriller.

The cast was brilliant not least my own humble performance as Barry the Bastard a Hitman suffering a multitude of fearsome yet comedic assaults until his actual demise.

Howard found his feet here, casting well known and familiar television stars as well as more serious impacting theatricals, honing and polishing the script until perfect.

It was Shane Richie’s feature debut after appearing in Ian Cunningham’s comedy short of 'Dead Clean’ (directed by yours truly) where Richie played Greek Hitman Nikos Malmatakis. This time however Shane was portraying the fella on the other side of the crosshairs in Ford’s ‘Distant

Chris Barfoot was funded to shoot ‘Never Let Go’, his producer being the fabulous and beautiful Laura Jane Stephens.

This was Howard’s first solo project away from the team that had always been the Ford Bros. I guess it was Howard’s rite of passage, his coming of age. He’d shot a grown up movie that could compete in action land, thriller city and dramasville that centred upon a strong and beautiful female lead (Angela Dixon) and her character’s struggle to find and free her child from kidnappers in a foreign land. Yes, it has echoes of Neeson’s ‘Taken’ but so what it’s a genre piece... a tale of woe, anxiety, and strength in the face of absolute fear... the worst possible fear of every decent parent alive.

I won’t tell you the outcome, only that I beg your indulgence, and ask you to watch this great film. Howard J

Shadow’ - quite at home, it seems, playing the victim as happily as the villain.

Next came ‘The Dead’... a zombie film wrought and fraught with real life horrors - the crew were robbed at gunpoint by African militia and gangsters and threatened with death and worse - and that’s nothing to do with the movie!!! Somehow they survived hell, to bring us hell...

The Dead won critical acclaim and led to a roller coaster ride of a sequel... ‘The Dead II’, shot on location this time in India. It set Howard alight and now he

Ford will shortly become a household name, as easily recognised as Franny Coppola, Steve Spielberg and Ridders Scott. He’s versatile, a perfectionist and a fantastic storyteller.

Once you’ve selected the song you wish to record, the first thing to do is to make sure you have rehearsed it to perfection.

The recording studio is not the place to rehearse as you’ll eat into valuable studio time!

Practice singing your song with a metronome to avoid timing issues, especially if you are used to singing along live with instruments.

Vocalists should practice warm up and breathing techniques as studio microphones will pick up all nuances no matter how subtle. Guitarists should practice to avoid finger sliding squeak noises and drummers should always bring spare sticks!

Do you want the song to have backing vocals or any additional instruments? Deciding this before you visit the studio will make life easier for the producer if he knows everything in advance.

Try to keep the song length to no more than 3.5 minutes (the length of a standard pop song).

Make sure in rehearsals you tighten the song to the length required for the recorded version.

Make sure the song grabs you straight away with a catchy hook line (this can be an instrumental or vocal line). Most people will decide if they like a song or not within 30 seconds, so ask yourself questions like ‘is the intro too long?’ and ‘does the song show off my sound and abilities best?’.

A universal highlight of Bestival’s Summer of Love, Duran Duran took it to the next level on the Isle of Wight last year, so the Common People team couldn’t resist bringing them to wrap up their sophomore Southampton Common outing with a headline set on Sunday 29th May. One of UK pop music’s most successful and enduring bands, Duran Duran have provided the soundtrack to the lives of several generations, from their early days in Birmingham’s Rum Runner formulating the sound that would give us Planet Earth and Girls on Film to their latest acclaimed album, Paper Gods, that returned them to the top ten winning them a whole new audience in the process.

Of their headline performance, Duran Duran’s John Taylor said: “We are very honoured to be a part of this year’s Common People festival, we had such an incredible time at Bestival last year. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend! See you all there”.

Also playing on Saturday will be rock n roll survivors and indiedance icons Primal Scream, hip-hop powerhouse Public Enemy, erstwhile Supergrass frontman and burgeoning solo artiste Gaz Coombes, lyrical acrobat Ghostpoet, b-boy originators The Sugarhill Gang, glossy rockers Don Broco and super-talented theatre troupe West End Kids. Plus, we’ll have drum n bass big boys Hospitality taking over the Big Top for some sick beats and colossal bass action featuring Camo & Krooked, London Elektricity, Fred V & Grafix, Etherwood and Dynamite MC, Wrec, with 130bpm bomb selection by Amy Becker.

Flexing his all-encompassing musical muscles Rob da Bank has joined forces with acclaimed venue The Joiners in Southampton, to bring you the cream of the up-andcoming music scene on the Uncommon Stage, featuring some of the most exciting new and underground bands.

“The beating heart of all our festival adventures is getting people to discover new music and uncover new band”, says Rob da Bank on the Uncommon stage. “Our curator, Ricky from The Joiners in Southampton is an expert in these matters, so please be upstanding and make much noise for The Uncommon Stage.”

Sunday 28th May will also see sets from Katy B, Ed Sheeran’s protégé Jamie Lawson, Brentford’s premier pirate radio crew Kurupt FM, Los Hermanos Cubanos The Cuban Brothers, rockney big shots Chas & Dave and lycra’s leading light Mr Motivator. Big Top behaviour comes courtesy of one of reggae’s true greats as David Rodigan presents Ram Jam featuring My Nu Leng, DJ Zinc, Prince Fatty and Venum Sound, plus there will be bassline business from recent chart stars 99 Souls.

Bringing the spirit of The Joiners’ directly to Southampton Common, Saturday’s dazzling new sounds will come courtesy of much admired Cambridge five-piece Lonely the Brave and experimental Brightonians Tall Ships, with sets from singer-songwriter Sean Mcgowan, stadium-ready post rockers New Desert Blues and BBC 6 Music-supported Bel Esprit, all of whom hail from Southampton.

There will also be live music from the Isle of Wight’s math-pop fourpiece Signals and the home turf triumvirate of Our Hollow, Our Home, Elixir and Vicki Musselwhite, with the first of the soon to be announced I Want to Play at Common People winners also making an appearance.

Sunday will see NME-championed Palma Violets topping a bill that will include garage rockers Pretty Vicious, Portsmouth’s Kassassin Street, and a cavalcade of local heroes including Science of Eight Limbs, The Rising, Bigtopp, These Septic Stars and Cassava, with two more I Want to Play at Common People winners completing the line-up.

And as ever, there will be a world of wonder on offer with amazing venues, bars and food including scrumptious Street Food, the Bollywood Cocktail Bus, the Uncommon Stage presented by The Joiners, The People’s Front Room, the Knitting Tent, crafty haven Spinney Hollow, the Bigtopmania Circus, cocktails galore from The Jam Jar Bar and fantastic arts & crafts, an ace kids area, bouncy castles and more! So make sure you start the festival season in style and head to Common People for two days of fantastic music and fun.

With so many music events on this summer we asked the man behind THE ALL DAYER, Jim Mitchell, to explain why this event is one not to be missed.

“Well we’ve got some absolutley awesome bands and artists for a start and the ticket price is only £5 and if you arrive before 3pm you get your first pint or shot free. So really it’s virtually a free event,” says Jim. A good answer we thought. But how will this make money for the charity it’s supporting?

“The Wildern Opportunity Group is close to the hearts of many of the performers, so they’ve agreed not only to perform but to also to pick up half the cost of that first drink.

Another good answer and great to know that South Coast performers and venue owners have such a charitable streak. So what is going to make the event stand out?

“THE ALL DAYER started life as an idea to get a load of musician friends together early in the day with a view to playing and drinking until the evening or until it becomes impossible to play due to lack of co-

ordination! So basically the unique selling point is that both the audience and the bands will be smashed by the end of proceedings.”

That sounds like a whole lot of fun on paper but you have to worry that the event could descend into farce so you think the organisers might be concerned about this? Not a bit of it.

“It will be fine. Many of us are no strangers to a drink or three when playing and we’ve got a couple of fantastic DJs as back up just in case it gets too much. We’ve also got some great audience participation

lined up with sing-a-longs and a couple of special guests, so no, we’re not worried in the slightest.”

Reassuring words and let’s face it if the end of the evening was a complete shambles that would at least be a different experience to the often sterile performances churned out by corporate sponsored events and after all, it is all for charity. From 2pm on Sunday we’ll be celebrating the launch of Roam with a get together in the Butcher’s Hook on Bitterne Park Triangle which forms one end of the Arts Trail. Anyone is invited to come along and join.

The arts trail includes a range of different art in unusual locations from an outdoor photography exhibition to a mural, from a ceramic installation in a tree to banner alongside the river.

Meet the Southampton Ambassadors Martin Perry

Launched in 2012, Southampton Ambassadors is my project to encourage the city’s elite, big and small, to join together for mutual benefit and the good of the Southampton area.

AND its working!

Our aim is to inspire and galvanise business and pride within Southampton and interest from outside. Whatever you need, I recommend checking out a Southampton Ambassador first. This isn’t any of those ‘buy a badge’ to say how good you are. They are there because I am convinced they are very good at what they do. AND I value my reputation!

My, my, my... and all that, Tom Canning is, without doubt, the most accomplished Tom Jones tribute act in the world - the fact that he’s in demand across the globe is testament to that. From his home town of Southampton to places like Bangkok, Bangladesh and the USA, Tom’s worked with all the greats, appeared on TV in the first Stars in Your Eyes and is endorsed by people who should know, including entertainers like Roger Daltrey and Kenny Lynch.

The Big Debate Michael Kurn Hello and welcome to my latest piece for The AND Guide. Thanks again to Martin for allowing me to continue to share my journey with you (Blush. Ed) as we all look to put Southampton on the map and promote this great city.

So as always I have been a busy bee up down the UK presenting many sporting events, and I'm still loving every second . As I come to the end of my second full season presenting the Premier League, I'm already looking forward to the next one.

So what to share with you this time? Well one of the things I am very privileged to do with my career is to go into schools and businesses to talk about what I do - yes really. I talk about my journey so far, how I have got there and how I want to push on to the next level. I really enjoy it. My aim with the talks is to INSPIRE the people I am talking too. I want them to go away full of ideas of how they can push themselves to the next level, whether it be with their education and career or their company or project. (Bit like I've done with you Michael ... cough. Ed) Last month I was lucky enough to be invited back to my old school to talk to the year 8’s as part of their careers week. So I thought in this edition of AND Guide as we move into spring I would share one of my favourite parts of my talk that day which was about FAILURE. (I could offer an opinion there too Mike!)

In sport and life there is a fine line between success and failure, look at Leicester City. As we near the end of the season just one win could be the difference between one of the greatest Premier League stories ever and a 2nd place finish.

So how do you look at failure? Do you see the prospect as one more reason not to do it? One more NO closer to that YES? Or do you say "why am I bothering?" In my talk I discuss how to deal with failure, and I share some examples. I thought I would share some of those with you, you never know you could be the next famous failure.

MICHAEL JORDAN Dropped from his high school basketball team for not being skilful enough MARILYN MONROE Sacked after her first year in the movies business for not being beautiful enough STEVE JOBS Sacked from his own company aged 30 JK ROWLING Rejected by publishers left right and centre ALBERT EINSTEIN Expelled from school and told he wouldn't amount to much as he couldn't talk till he was four.

This list goes on. For me, I have had loads of failures. I have found out many times how quite not to do something, but it makes it even more rewarding when that door finally does open and you achieve that dream. (Nobody would give me a job Michael. That’s why I made up this one! Ed) Remember Nothing is impossible in life. In work and in sport, if you want it bad enough you can get it. If you follow me on social media you will notice I use the hash tag #DesireDreamVision, its how I live my life Desire something Dream about it and Visualise it.

So whatever you want to achieve don't be scared of failure go out there and make it happen.

Something a little different from me there, I do hope it may have given you something to think about moving in to the next few months. (Funnily enough Michael I do the same thing. Perhaps you could offer me a job? Ed)

In Europe. Out of Europe. Shake it all about Europe. Brexit. Bremain. Boris Johnson. Nigel Farage. Right that’s the politic out of the way, so lets get to the big question on Europe should Saints be in it next year?

Now the common view is that the Europa League is tiring and hits a club’s league form. But look at Spurs. A great run in Europe and the only team challenging Leicester to win the premier league. (I know, I know, it should have been us, could have been us - Morgan, Nathaniel, I'm Looking at you guys). So maybe being in Europe isn't so bad. Unless you are Man Utd, Liverpool or Arsenal - all of whom seem to have flopped in Europe and flopped at home. Of course, our early exit from Europe this season, rather than helping us in the league, seemed to drain us of confidence, a prelude to a season where we are either a top 4 form team or a bottom 4 form team. Oh for consistency. Well the good kind of consistency.

Looking back at the Europa League , the first round games of our European journey against Vitesse were wonderful, apart from the fact that I was away on holiday and missed both games. Grrr... I was back though for round two, the unpronounceable, Midtjylland. But I really wish I hadn't been.

So bad was our second leg against Midtyjylland I am sure it set our season back a month.

But poor as this season’s experience was, I think to kick on as a club we need Europe.

Mr Koeman will want to be a European manager and we've seen enough players leave in the hope of playing in Europe to know that’s what they want too. Big players want to play on big stages. Big managers also want to be on big stages. And as we saw with Midtjyland - we need all the practise we can get. But, has it always been that way?

SAINTS HIGHLIGHTS IN EUROPE Okay highlights might be an exaggeration but Saints have over the years had a few trips into European Football. Our first European tie was in the 1969–70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, along with fellow English clubs Newcastle United, Liverpool and eventual winners Arsenal. Southampton's started off against Norwegian side Rosenborg, losing 1–0 away but winning 2–0 win at home.

Even better the second leg put Southampton into a Second Round tie with Portuguese side Vitória de Guimarães where a 3–3 away draw was followed by a 5–1 home win which saw them through to the last 16. But we missed out on a quarter final place on away goals to … Newcastle.

Hmm… Newcastle. Away Goals. That might come up again.

In 1971-72 we made it to the EUFA cup, after finishing seventh in the league in the previous season, only to be knocked out in the he first round by Athletic Bilbao.

The 1974–75 season saw us relegated to Div 2 but entered into the Texaco Cup. Is Texaco petrol still around? This was a strange event, involving 16 English clubs fighting it out, the best four to play quarterfinal games against four Scottish clubs.

Saints actually reached the final, seeing off Rangers FC and Oldham to face …

Newcastle, who repeated their Inter Cities Fairs Cup trick of beating us, this time with 2 goals in extra time.

Having won the FA Cup in 1976, Southampton were in the 1976-77 European Cup Winners Cup. We beat Olympique Marseille, Carrick Rangers and then faced R.S.C. Anderlecht. After a poor away game, Saints levelled the aggregate score to 2-2 in the second leg at the Dell. The crowd were exuberant and in full voice. A popular song in those days was " Six foot two, eyes of blue, Jimmy Steel is after you". However, one clumsy back pass from the impenetrable Jim Steel and Southampton conceded late on, to be eliminated from the tournament.

On Away goals. Perhaps one of the most disappointing ends to a game ever.

Anderlecht though, did go on to reach the Final. Legend has it that Jim Steel’s mistake so upset McMenemy that he never picked him for Saints again. That's not quite true.

He featured in the next league game, which was to prove to be his last.

1981–82 saw Saints again in the UEFA Cup going out in the 2nd round to Lisbon.

The following season Saints once more qualified but didn’t get past the first round against well known European stalwarts IFK Norrköping … cough. After finishing second in the league in 1983/84, the following seasons EUFA Cup exit again came quickly in round 1 against Hamburg. Then, in spite of qualifying to play in Europe in 1985/86, events at the Liverpool game in Brussels led to English clubs facing a lengthy ban from European competitions. But not as along as Saints two decade wait for its next game across the channel.

And so, over 20 years later, Southampton qualified for the UEFA Cup in 2003/04 after finishing runners up in the 2003 FA Cup Final. It was the first time that St. Mary's Stadium had hosted a competitive European match. Following on from a 1–1 draw at home, Southampton conceded late on in Romania and found themselves eliminated from the First Round for the third time in a row, this time against FC Steaua Bucure?ti.

A long, intermittent and lacklustre European history by many clubs standards but our overall record show Saints have played 37 games in Europe, won 17, drawn 11 and lost 9, scoring 61 goals.

SAINTS BEST PLAYER FROM EUROPE Saints have acquired a few players from Europe but who is the best buy. Well its certainly not Gaston Ramirez, Daniel Osvaldo or Dejan Lovren. It could easily have been Van Dijk or Morgan Schneiderlin. But these two aren't my personal favourite.

For me, it has to be swashbuckling right back Ivan Golac. At 28 years of age, he was one of the first Yugoslavian players to be allowed to leave the country and play overseas. Saints bought him for £50,000 (about a weeks wages for a modern footballer). He was a tough tackler and a marauding attacking full back with a little bit of crazy in him. A real fan’s favourite. As part of the 1979 League Cup Final team, he was the first "foreigner" to play in a Wembley Cup Final, going on to play for Saints 197 times before drifting off to Pompey. Like so many Saints players did in those days. But I wont hold it against him … or Mick Channon.

On his days at Saints he once said “There was fire on the park. The Dell was always in flames and a lot of the opponents from London, Manchester and Liverpool just couldn't stand the heat.”

RONALD KOEMAN. ENOUGH SAID. What if come June we really do leave the European Union?

Free movement of people in the EU makes it very easy to sign players from Europe. And many South American players have dual passports with Spain and Italy, giving them easy access to the EU with no issues over work permits.

However, those with long memories will remember how hard it used to be to sign overseas players. If we leave the EU, the existing rules for granting work permits would have significant consequences.

For example there is no way Manchester Untied could have singed David De Gea. To automatically gain a work permit, you must have over the previous two years played in 30% of games played by top ten FIFA ranked countries, or 45% of matches for countries ranked 11-20, 60% for nations 21-30 and 75% for countries 31-50. He didn't qualify. And nor would, Lovren, Clasie, Gardos, Fonte, Romeu, Van Dijk, Juanmi, Stekelemburg, Boruc or Schniederlin.

Leaving the EU would also stop clubs recruiting youngsters from Europe. Most famously, Arsenals capture of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona as a 16 year old would be a thing of the past. This may not be the most important factor in how you vote for the upcoming referendum - but it may have a big impact on the Saints and the Premier League

JOHAN CRUYFF And last but definitely not least, one reason to play games in Europe is it means you get to see the world’s best players. I never saw Johan Cruyff play but I did see him as a manager for one game. The 1992 European Cup Final between Barcelona and Sampadoria. Sat among the Barcelona fans, I watched Ronald Koeman score the winning goal when he along with Cruyff effectively started Barcelona on the route to the greatness they have known over the last twenty years. The Joy and skill he brought to the game will be sadly missed.
