As I sit at my alleged desk drinking unhealthy amounts of coffee to get me to the end of another artwork marathon, I’m at pains to remind myself not to leave my editor bit thing till last, when I can hardly speak any English let alone wite it ... zzzz

For instance if you feel strongly about Europe and vote in someone to champion your cause, they then claim a mandate to push for more sultanas in Granny loaf because 65% of the public voted for them.

Only kiddin. I’m at my random best when I’m er... hyper. One random thing I was going to include in this issue actually was a nod in the direction of the forthcoming election. Bit dangerous for a ‘What’s On Guide’ I suppose but it is an event in theory. Sadl;y its becoming a bit of a non event with a mere 65% of the population taking part.

Which means getting on for 40% couldn’t be bothered to make the effort.

I feel pretty strongly about voting and in particular excercising the freedom our men and women have struggled and died to give us. (Pretty heavy this for a Guide I know. but stick with me I’m on a roll).

I think the reason many people don’t vote, particularly young people, is that they think its a waste of time. Their vote won’t change anything. The rowdy old politicians will just carry on as normal and do their usual gig despite any opinion other than those that might see them lose their lucrative little earner.

Well that can’t be right? So I suggest the voting slips get a bit more savvy. Namely they have a list of the things candidates stand for so we tick them or cross them off.

A computer tots it all up and the country can then catagorically show what it feels is important and what is not. I can’t see how that would be any more technical to sort out than the lottery?

Anyway I ran out of space, even though I’ve printed an extra 4 pages, so I didn’t bother!

I hope you like the AND Guide? I hope you like what its trying to achieve? We live in an area rich in talent and resources but we are singularly rubbish at banging a drum and promoting things. How many times have you said "Oh I'd like'd to have gone to that", "When was that then?" or "What shall we do today?" and so on ...

You can help me change that. Rather than moan about the state of things from my sofa, I’ve put my money where my mouth is and brought out The AND Guide. But it needs your support. There is no pot of gold behind it. Not even a pot of coffee most of the time. If it doesn't bring in the advertising it stops. Simple as that. broadcast Stu’s personal live music highlights Michael Kurn Well here we go again and 2015 is already flying by. January was as busy as ever for me as the Indoor Hockey Season got in to full swing. I found myself darting all over the UK culminating at Wembley Arena a few weekends ago. I have been lucky enough to present at Wembley a few times and its always as magical as ever.

2015 is shaping up to be another full year as I hopefully continue to climb the presenting ladder. My reporting work for the Premier League is going from strength to strength and I am looking forward to being at St Mary’s on the 11th Feb for the home match v West Ham. Its my first time reporting from there so as a fan its going to be a very special evening for me. Lets hope the good run of form continues and its another three points for the Saints!

And what a season it has been, at the time of writing this, Frazer Forster has the most clean sheets in the league (10), Southampton have the best defensive record in the league and we has a good hold on a top 4 spot. What an achievement finishing in the top 6 would be! Its a bit of a dream at the moment but the thought of teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich gracing the St Mary’s turf brings a smile to many a Southampton fan's face. Here's to a great finish to the season for Keoman and the boys in Red and White. COYR's!

Locally its good to see Eastleigh FC doing so well. Stuart Donald and his team on and off the pitch, are doing a fantastic job and the new McKoy Community Stand looks fantastic. Its great to see the investment being made into not only the club but in a venue for the whole community. Its amazing to see the journey the club has made since the club was set up by Derek Brooks.

Oliver Gray AS THE AND GUIDE’S token old g**, I am happy to admit that I use my free bus pass with alacrity.

Indeed, just the other day, I travelled from Twyford to Bosham just because I felt like it. It took three hours each way and also involved a lot of healthy walking.

The tranquility of beautiful Bosham was slightly marred by the frightening posters on every lamppost calling in the local males for DNA tests in the wake of a brutal murder there.

Shudder.

We sixties flower children used to go on lots of demos, and just recently, I went on one again, probably my first for several decades. I joined the March For Winchester because I agree with the main thrust, which is that the current proposal for redeveloping the city centre is not what its citizens actually want. But I have another major objection. They promised us a bus station and now they have taken it away.

Winchester’s bus station is a genial dump, but at least it sort of works, in that most buses actually start and finish there and transferring from one to the other is simple. What they propose to replace it with is an “on street” bus “interchange”. I have bitter experience of these systems. Salisbury has recently replaced its similarly crumbling bus station with an “on street” system of such chaos that no one has the faintest idea where to go to connect to their bus. The pavements are full of confused people, angering the shoppers who are trying to get past them.

It’s a similar story in Southampton. There is a range of bus stops arrayed along Portland Terrace, but it’s hard to identify which bus is likely to stop where.

This is exacerbated by a new rule which allows drivers to simply sail past if no one puts out a hand, plus the crazy, Thatcher-induced plethora of random bus companies competing against each other.

Should you have the nerve to want to change to another bus, you have to negotiate the maze of the Marlands Centre and emerge, if you are lucky, in Above Bar to begin your search among the myriad bus stops there.

There is actually a serious point to this. Almost all the people who use buses in the UK are pensioners, attracted by the free transport. Most others are prevented from using buses by the outrageously high prices. Now I am a pretty nimble pensioner (for now) and can jog between bus stops in search of connections. Anyone a bit frail is in trouble.

It’s a shame, but that’s why I waved my banner. Don’t ditch the bus station. Or in the words of Fuzzbox: “I’ve Got A Bus Pass And I’m Gonna Use It”.

National Award for CMHC ‘s Pam Bates Congratulations to Pam Bates, of one of The AND Guide’s supported cahrities Countess Mountbatton Hospice Charity. Fund Raising Manager Pam was the national winner of the prestigious Lifetime of Achievement Award at the recent Venus Awards.

The award, sponsored regionally by Condor Office Solutions, was decided after the judges had sifted through a massive 13,225 nominations and applications as well as 34,066 votes to arrive at the eventual 220 finalists and ultimately Pam as overall winner.

A mother of four - positive 'can do',

adventurous, motivational and business savvy, Pam has proven time and again to be the girl for any challenge, with an impressive CV of successful projects including, MD of one of Southampton’s most succesful modelling agencies Seymour Models, scouting for Storm Models in London, restoring and converting an Italian farm into a hotel, columnist for Italia Magazine as well as lecturing, mentoring while passionately fundraising throughout.

Well done too to Katy HandleyQuint the only other Southampton woman to win a natonal title in 2014, for her Children’s. Her The New Business of the Year category was sponsored by Rothmans LLP. After a bustling career in finance Katy launched her own children’s clothing label PINKS opening her first family run boutique in Southampton last year.

International singing stars comE to Southampton for charity Karen England and Rebecca Knight are better known as The OperaBabes.

On Sunday 22nd February 3:00pm at Turner Sims, the critically acclaimed, No. 1 classical act perform a charity concert in aid of Barrett’s Wessex.

The OperaBabes rise to fame began in 2001 when, after being spotted busking in Covent Garden, they were asked to sing at the FA Cup Final and subsequently offered 5 major record deals. They signed to Sony and have since then performed all over the world from Las Vegas, where they made history by becoming the first classical act to appear at the legendary Stardust Casino, to Los Angeles Opera where they appeared alongside Placido Domingo.

They have sung for the Queen on three occasions and with all the major orchestras in the UK and abroad. Selling in excess of 1.5 million albums and topping the charts worldwide,

OperaBabes recently signed to Warner Classics and released their third album entitled Silent Noon. They are currently working on album four.

Barrett's Wessex, the charity whose principal aim is to reduce the number of deaths to oesophageal cancer through raising awareness of its predominant pre-cancerous lesion, Barrett's Oesophagus, in Southampton, Wessex and beyond, are delighted they are providing a gala concert to help raise funds for potentially life-saving equipment.

The concert will come at the end of a month long national campaign by Public Health England to raise awareness of oesophageal cancer under their Be Clear On Cancer banner.

Previously Barrett's Wessex has provided Southampton General Hospital with a Radio Frequency Ablation machine that is saving lives by preventing advanced stages of Barrett's Oesophagus progressing to oesophageal cancer – the fifth greatest cancer killer in the UK claiming the lives of one person an hour on average.

Presently they are saving for a Fine Bore endoscope that may help detect pre-cancerous changes early enough for the life-saving treatment.

“There may be up to one million people in the UK with Barrett's Oesophagus,” explains their chairman, Chris Robinson, “though only 10% know it. They will receive medication and regular surveillance to ensure their Barrett's doesn't progress to cancer.”

“It is excellent news these distinguished singers are donating their time and performance fees to our charity.”

Additional Seating Released for 2015 Ageas Bowl ODI’s

Due to high demand, the Ageas Bowl have released additional seating for England’s two Royal London One-Day Internationals at the home of Hampshire Cricket in 2015.

A limited number of additional seats have been released for England’s Royal London One-Day International against New Zealand on Sunday 14 June.

In addition to this, more seats are being made available for England’s Royal London One-Day International against Australia on Thursday 3rd September, priced at £60 for adults and £10 for Under 17’s. This comes after a number of additional seats were released in December, but which have already sold out.

The Ageas Bowl Commercial Director, Stuart Robertson said: “The fact we

have now released additional seating for the New Zealand match and a second phase of extra seats for Australia shows there is a huge interest in international cricket from people in the South. There’s still a buzz around the ground since the success of the Test Match last year and we envisage these additional seats to go quickly.”

The two ODIs will also be the first International matches to be played in-front of the completed Hilton Hotel at the northern end of the ground, which is scheduled to be finished at the beginning of May.

Situated an hour or less away from London, Brighton, Portsmouth and Reading, the Ageas Bowl is easily accessible for anyone living in the South of England. With excellent transport links from all major stations in the area, as well as a Park & Ride Scheme, it couldn’t be easier to get to and from the ground.

THE LEGENDARY WASHBOARD DAVE One Friday night at the Platform Tavern Ben Gunn and the Junkyard Angels were blowing the froth off a couple of sherbets in the break. Ben not his real name shurely, the Elvis Aron Presley of Southampton's rockabilly thrash skiffle leans over to catch a question from a mate on the front table. “You seen anything of Washboard Dave lately?” He shook his head.

Mole sat behind them could answer that and did. The girl who loves banjo's was jamming with 'Washy' the night before in a country pub in the company of a bunch of scoundrels including Ratty. Only a week later Washboard Dave ambles into the Platform Tavern with his jocular grin and his battered to bits washboard.

Setting up in front of Ratty and Mole's table are JC and Angelina Grimshaw in on the night tide from the diamond Wight island. For a good few moons Washboard Dave has been jamming with them here and there when he can.

Barry Upton Our resident pop guru Barry is a multi international hit songwriter/producer/performer. Initially a front singer with chart toppers Brotherhood Of Man before working with a multitude of household names inc’ Sonia (above), he was also creator of the lovable pop outfit STEPS, penning their massive hit 5678.

Barry is also a former co-host with our Editor Martin of the AND Magazine Show on Radio Hampshire and currently a TV & radio presenter and producer in Thailand. AND of course he’s still performing!

So, you’ve used all your artistic prowess to compose, record and produce your next hit. You’ve rehearsed and got your act together to inflict on an unsuspecting public who you hope will be rushing to their computer to download and get a piece of emotionally charged instinctive purchase. The one missing link which will enable all of this to happen is ‘publicity.’ otherwise how is the world to know of your original and vital assault on it’s senses?

Washboard is a busy man, a veritable will of the wisp with a beaten about laundry bag for his washboard and endless stories about music and his life and times around the Southampton area. He's the kind of fellah had he been an Irishman living in Galway he would have been a national treasure by now. He's a to Ratty and Mole anyway. The night before he'd given Mole a late Christmas present Banjo for Dummies and waxed lyrical about a new record store in Romsey. Washboard Dave is an endless source of information on the mysteries of life including ufo's and Romsey girls (the subject of one of Dave's songs).

Tonight though he's here to shoot the breeze with our table of friends all glued to the prestigious talents of JC and his sister Angelina. JC the master string man and he's on searing form tonight. He's brought harmonicas, a guitar, slide, mandolin and a banjo ukulele gifted to him by an eighty year old who wanted the instrument to go to a good home. Angelina brings her voice, part Bessie Smith swagger, part Billie Holiday swoon. It's all she needs really that and her sure as a racing cert rhythm she makes on the guitar.

It's a night brimming with their own songs, jazz, Mississippi blues classics and that mountain hollering Applacian back porch swing they kick into. Into a brew as good as the Platform's home made beer saunters Washboard Dave for a couple of numbers in each set.

Washboard sounds like the tappets to the duo's pistons and blows a long railway horn salute here and there to blow off steam. The highlight of many all evening was the closer before the encore. Old Jack Lightning with Washy on board along with Mole on triangle. Kicked off by JC's crashing mandolin chords it proceeds at a pace. Washboard takes a beguiling solo tapping and firiing all over his beaten old instrument like the tail gunner in a B52. Mole is delierious as during her solo she and JC and her have ended on the same double note.

By the end of the evening the Platform rocked to the rafter's settles down a notch. Mole hands JC back his triangle. Washboard Dave puts his washboard back in his laundry bag. JC and Angelina packed away their instruments before slipping away into the rain filled night headed for the ferry to the diamond.

Mole puts her arms around Washboard Dave and hugs him.

JUST ANOTHER SHOPPING TRIP DOWN PATTAYA HIGH STREET

Public relations (PR) is the practice of managing the spread of information between an individual or group and the public. Public relations is required for a product or individual needing to gain exposure to their audience. This differentiates it from advertising as a form of marketing communications. The aim of public relations is to inform the public of the product and ultimately persuade them to love it so much, they may just spend their hard earned cash on it.

Public relations specialists establish and maintain relationships with the target audience and the media.

Common activities include designing communications campaigns, writing news releases and other content for news and feature articles, working with the press, arranging interviews plus writing website and social media content Success in the field of public relations requires a deep understanding of the public and media’s fickle needs. The public relations professional must know how to effectively address these concerns using the most powerful tool of the public relations trade, which is publicity.

It’s all very fine putting your masterful works up onto iTunes or similar, but who, apart from your close friends and family is to know your latest offering’s available and actually exists?

A ‘P.R. Guru’ is not inexpensive but unless you already have the correct avenues to publicize your product, then they are vital.

TV appearances, radio play, press headlines, magazine articles, live shows etc.. do not magically happen and it can take a skilled industry professional who has developed and maintained good contacts with the right

people to enable all of this to happen, sometimes by dastardly means.

I remember a meeting at Jive Records when the band I created ‘Steps’ were to release their second album. The first had charted in the top 20 for over a year but that was not enough for newspapers and the rest of the media to sit up and take any interest in the new product. So a plan was offered up by the P.R. department to put out a rumour that the guys in the band were being paid more than the girls, something sure to stir up controversy. It worked spectacularly with all news agencies running the story, even Sky News, whilst publicly decrying the disgusting act of gender inequality, mentioning the new album which was due for release. A week later Steps announced the ‘rumour’ was not true but the publicity had already been achieved.

I also remember Gerri Halliwell from The Spice Girls and Robbie Williams were headline news for having a brief ‘affair’ together. Even though it was obviously a publicity generating story, the media loved it and both released their next single simultaneously.

Lady Ga Ga had a field day with the tabloids at one point clammering for a daily press release from her P.R. person from whether or not she was a man to her fashionably dressing up in meat. She sold millions of records.

The media thrives on stories like this so the trick is, even if you are the most boring band or individual in the world, then invent something that will be of interest to help promote what it is you want the public to know about.

The P.R. Guru should be an expert at achieving these goals and any worth their salt will know how to

maximize the public’s awareness of your product… oops, sorry... art.

Another aspect of an industry professional’s expert guidance is timing.

It’s no good doing all this constructive manipulation if something is going to beat you to the headlines and diminish the affectiveness of your campaign.

When I had the top ten hit with Sonia (above), Simon Cowell, who then in ’91 was his own P.R. man for BMG, managed to get her on TV ten times in one week… result... HIT. However, I remember a few years ago when I was producing the Cheeky Girls and our new single The Cheeky Flamenco was about to be promoted. The P.R. man from the record company changed the release date putting it back a few weeks so as not to clash with a few high profile new releases by artists more major than the Cheekys. Their Cheeky Mum, who had a lot of say in the Cheeky goings on, decided to book them in for a mass of TV appearances herself. But these were around the original release date. So when broadcast, the single wasn’t available, eventually losing us around 40 chart positions. Spectacular FAIL. This highlights the need to have one P.R. person organizing the timing and strategic placing of a product with joined up thinking.

My latest project, the world’s first international English singing Ladyboy band, are now in the studio with me working on the album wot I’m producing. The aim is to strategically release a single as soon as their Sky Living documentary is aired later this year, maximizing exposure on TV programmes such as The Graham Norton Show, Good Morning etc, then finally release the album just before next Christmas.

I am working closely with a very successful P.R. man who will co-ordinate all this and ensure their will be enough publicity via press and magazine articles to create enough awareness of the product… damn…I mean ‘piece of art’.

Chapel Sessions is a community led, not for profit occasional music series hosted by Sonja and John Davison in the acoustically acclaimed Victorian Chapel in Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley.

Volunteers are crucial to the success of the Sessions and it’s one of the only venues you can get to suggest your favourite artist or band and possibly even end up providing hospitality for them!

Past artists have included musicians from far and wide including May 2013 from New York -Nell Bryden plus Sam Bradley and Herbie Armstrong; November 2013 from Nashville -Jenn Bostic with Emma Stevens, Daisy Chapman, Jack Omer; April 2014 from Portland Oregon –Tony Furtado, Benji Kirkpatrick and Nigel Stephens; May 2014 from Sussex Richard Durrant who has just completed a 30+ gig ‘Cycling-Music’ tour of UK raising funds for a Big C’ Cancer therapy Centre; July 2014 Americana with Wood Wire and Words and the Papertrains; and most recently the return of Daisy Chapman to headline with Duo Lily and Meg providing support. In addition, in October, the skills and expertise of ‘Chapel Sessions’ helped to make the Jubilee Sailing Trust Autumn Pumpkin Festival music stage a great success.

The overall aim is to put on music sessions from all genres to appeal to a wide ranging audience.

It’s important to Chapel Sessions hosts and creators John and Sonja Davison, that these artists come as audience recommendations and leave as friends who believe in the ethos of the Chapel Sessions - to bring the venue to life whilst respecting it’s past. “We were delighted that during the intervals so many people were socialising, chatting, talking about the concept whilst enjoying the quality music, discussing the venue itself and

interacting with one another. So many music venues you go to and either stand like sardines for ages before it starts or sit in a row, and often don’t even have an interval and then you leave. Not exactly a social interaction!

LOCALly connected RELEASES Paul Ridge

I’d Rather Go Blind BROOKE NICKERSON

Time to Run THINKER Since The And Guide started I've been quite surprised at the number of bands and singers playing either Celtic or folk - or indeed Celtic folk - in the area. Next in line is three-piece Thinker, who blend additional elements of punk and indie into their own particular sound, along with a dash of politics. Their second album - Time To Run - sees them mixing heartfelt love songs with more edgy material railing against the injustices of the modern world.

Kind of like an Irish version of The Jam but with a fiddle ...

Singer-songwriter Chris Bateman is the Paul Weller of the group, having released a number of successful solo projects under his own name, with Chris Edwards (violin) and Mark Chadwick (bass) accompanying. The group already have quite a following, playing roots events like the Watchett and Maker festivals in the west country, as well as in local venues like The Joiners and Pompey's Wedgewood Rooms.

Their mission is to bring folk music back to the people and now seems as good a time as any given the national success enjoyed by Frank Turner as well as the recent upsurge in popularity of the genre across the south.

For the album, the trio's signature sound is fleshed out with drums and harmonised vocals into something more like their typical live lineup. The production is sparse and for someone more used to a rock or soul sound it might seem a bit lightweight at first but the more I listen to this kind of music the more I "get it".

Charlie's voice is naturally quite high in terms of his singing range but it goes well with a violin accompaniment, something which is showcased on Holding On, Holding Out. It actually eliminates the need for the more usual backing vocalist or two that you'd get on a more mainstream recording.

The more upbeat side to their music is best heard on Hate, an impassioned hippy call to arms asking everyone to "spread the love" for "if you hate, you're the one to blame" after all.

Another stand out is Isolation, the melancholy ballad of a broken man at the end of his tether.

The simple guitar/bass/fiddle is really to the fore on this one, along with Chris' excellent lyrics and a tender vocal to match. Tell Me Ma is a fun foot-stomper with a sing-a-long feel: "She is handsome, she is pretty, she is the belle of Belfast city" that would get people rockin' in the old country.

Perhaps my favourite track on the album, the excellent Time To Run kicks off with a subtle instrumental intro before kicking into proper Celtic rock mode, complete with what sounds to my (untrained) ear very much like a bodhran.

I could see this as a set closer, with everyone up and dancing, and that's the key to folk music: listening to an album at home is one thing, but it's only half the experience. For this kind of band they need to be seen live ... so what are you waiting for ?

I first reviewed Brooke Nickerson several months ago following the release of her first UK single, Broken Seams, a bold ballad with a simple refrain and a purity that seemed unusual in these days of over-production. There were another couple of songs from her out at about the same time, a slow-burning country rocker, Take These Chains, and another mid-tempo pop number in the form of Shaky Ground.

The latest project sees Brooke team up with a band to really beef up her sound and give it a richer, fuller quality more in keeping with what you might expect in a live performance. The plinking piano - somewhat of a signature for Ms Nickerson - remains, but this ain't Coldplay, no sir. This is a much grittier American sound with lashings of slide guitar and a touch of southern Boogie. Think of a chilled-out ZZ Top with a girl singer and you're about there ...

The new versions of the old songs work really well, particularly the excellent Take These Chains, which I liked first time round, but love now.

The new single is a cover of the eternal standard, I'd Rather Go Blind, originally a hit for Etta James but subsequently covered by everyone from Rod Stewart to Beyoncé. At first, when I saw the title I wondered if it would be a

good choice for a singer who tends to breathe life into a song rather than strangle the hell out of it, but the effect is surprisingly tender and uplifting. They keep it simple, without rocking out too much almost as a teaser for what's to come with their other new material, and it's a very effective reworking of an old classic.

Too Little Too Late reminds me a lot of early Heart, with some harmonised vocals and that sleazy guitar over the top plus lyrics about the levee breaking. Shadows builds from a chugging, bluesy-rock vibe into a three-way fight for supremacy between Brooke's voice, the bass and the lead guitar with the latter having the last word. Why features a fat slice of organ, adding another layer of 70s nostalgia, and the balance is spot on between all the various elements of the band, making it a great closing track. There's a touch of Boston, a smidge of Allman Brothers and Brooke's sweet vocals always as the counterpoint, focusing everything and bringing it all together seamlessly.

What I love about Brooke's music is that it takes me away to some dusty, dirt track in Tennessee, driving a pickup with the window down a match between my teeth, sunglasses on, the radio at full blast ... driving nowhere in particular without a care in the world.

Anything that makes me feel like that is alright in my book.

Giving Shelter VARIOUS ARTISTS Giving Shelter is an American charity album project, founded by Jeff Millar-Sax, who lost his wife Janine after a year-long battle with lung cancer. During that time, the couple were living out of hotels in southern California as she received her treatment 100 miles from the family home, such is the way health insurance is structured in the US. Given the emotional, physical and financial hardships they had to endure, Jeff decided to set up a fund in his wife's honour to help out other people in similar situations ... the result is this album. With a target of $1m, they still have a long, long way to go - they've currently raised about £1500 - but it's early days and anything we can do to help promote this good cause is a step in the right direction.

Local drummer and friend of The AND Guide, Roger Pope - he of Elton John, Rod Stewart and Hall & Oates fame, no less - was due to play on the record but unfortunately he himself passed away just over a year ago. Both Roger and his widow, Sue, are credited in the sleevenotes of the CD, which you can buy online either in physical format or as a download. They also have a facebook page for the charity itself both are easy to find with the usual internet searches - with proceeds going towards Janine's fund, which you can keep track of on givingshelter.net.

The album itself is a highly polished collection of AOR numbers, varying in style from straight rock through blues, RnB and soul with a massive number of contributing artists. It reminds me a lot of a Jools Holland release or perhaps a more recent Santana offering, with a range of singers taking front and centre while a strong collective of musicians plays on behind them. Typically American sounding, most of the songs sound quite retro by modern standards but the production values throughout are extremely high - this is not a throwntogether mish-mash: there's a lot of talent packed into the project, not least Jeff MillarSax himself. He's lead vocalist on a few tracks, including the excellent Going Nowhere and I immediately found myself scrabbling around on Google, trying to look up the name of Supertramp's singer (Rick Davies, if you're interested) because he sounds exactly like him !

Elsewhere, there's strong gospel elements on Magic, old school stadium rock on Old Dreams and proper spine-tingling soul on The Crazy Things I Say. All in all, it's a very strong set of songs and that's without even mentioning the sublime latin instrumental, Theme To A Never-Ending Love Story, which is "dedicated to Roger and Sue Pope". A fitting and apt testament to a local legend, I think you'll agree ... www.givingshelter.net

This issue: Sam Gledhill. Lead singer with his Lee-On-Solent band Fat Kat. Sam, when did your interest in performing begin?

What are your views on the UK music scene?

I grew up in a household full of good music. At family parties I would play air guitar along to Rolling Stones and AC/DC tracks. What really broke the ice for me was listening to Green Day. Their music really influenced my formative years.

It's very competitive and you really have to stand out from the crowd to be noticed and taken seriously.

Social media is your secret weapon.

It's all about keeping the fan base updated and happy and enjoying what you do. I used to enjoy the days when you went in person to venues and promoters, selling your sound and proving you could fill a venue. Now they are swamped with people sending mp3's, but what matters is how you cut it live and get a crowd going.

What other interests do you have?

I'm a big classic car fan and own a 1970 VW Beetle - it will even feature in one of our upcoming photo shoots! Also scooters, Lambretta, Vespa, anything retro and old school.

Are there any Southampton venues where you'd like to perform?

We are an Indie/Rock band, although Indie is a loose term. We love a bit of offbeat and you'll hear some Ska in our music.

So you write your own songs?

Yes, and my years in the Mod and scooter scene have rubbed off on my writing style. 2015 could see an album's worth of new songs.

Who are your musical influences?

Arctic Monkeys, Pigeon Detectives, The Kooks. I listen to a lot of older music such as The Jam, Paul Weller, also The Who and The Kinks who, in my opinion, set the bar for many bands and genres.

I've always wanted to play at The Brook. I've heard such good things about the venue, and it would be great to add it to our 2015 gigs list.

What advice would you give to musicians who are starting out?

You have to live and breathe music as a career. For every day your social media stays quiet with no posts it's another day someone else will take your limelight. Be true to yourself and believe in your music.

Recently- fiction, satirical humour and reality merged and the promise of retribution resulted and the murder of many. Why? In the wake of last year’s North Korean insidious cyberattack against Sony, many arguments have surfaced, but the one I’m interested in, iswho actually walks the moral high-ground here...

Hackers violated supposedly secure private data with a view to blackmail executives- in order to supress the completion and release of Sony’s latest $40M fictional comedy feature of ‘The Interview’. Starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, the movie’s narrative centred on the assassination of North Korea’s current leader Kim Jong-un, recent successor of notorious dictator Kim Jong-il. The farcical parody caused disparity and offense and set in motion the paddy pounding iron fists of the N.K government.

To us in the West, it seemed a silly thing to get pissy about.

Our satirical sense of humour often targets political icons, it’s the basis of our most envied and prized and often abused democratic platforms- freedom of speech.

China and Japan have been mardy with each other for centuries culminating in skirmishes and cultural political slanging matches. North Korea is of course a closely protected ally of China and a dig at Kim (and China by proxy) kinda reinforces the continuing difficulties between them.

As for Hollywood - it was quite remarkable to watch the unfolding cowardice. Scratch the surface and the glitz loses its sparkle and sheen... I don’t blame the cineplexes for initially refusing to play the movie in light of bomb threats- but it revealed a terrible and embarrassing weakness... the national policy of never giving in to terrorism became little more than lip-service as America fell shaking to its knees...

On the other side of the world, terrorists murdered eleven employees and visitors at the satirist paper ‘Charlie Hebdo’ in Paris, France. It was a cold, inhuman, disgraceful cowardly attack, as is the nature of terrorism. In defiance - the paper published caricature images of the Prophet

the damning quest for profit.

We cannot and will not allow terrorism to destroy our way of life yet to move forward we must not inflict a broad revenge that will outrage and cause harm to the innocent. We, as a people, do not deserve these atrocities against us, but must acknowledge that the West invaded Arabian territories with a view to control foreign farmed oil in the name of ‘selfpreservation’ in the early Nineties.

I spoke to a young soldier recently, just back from a recent tour of Afghanistan, a lovely kid, a young Christian (not that religion has a bearing on an old Cheers Tim.like He was handsome Agnostic me)a who had rogue, no but the gentlest of giants. Loved by all x idea, no knowledge that we hit

Our government must thank our brave soldiers for their unquestioning devout service.

They must apologise also to the families of the dead... on all sides of this impossible two decade conflict and resolve our differences. If we do not do this‘hate’ will devour us, ‘fear’ will become a way of life and our shrinking ‘freedoms’ will eventually be completely denied to us all- in the name of antiterror, in the name of our homeland security.

BOOKS red & rit Newsflash! 2015 will be my year of if not perhaps living dangerously then certainly reading dangerously.

To help me in my quest Andy Miller’s account of doing just that is published under the not too subtle title of THE YEAR OF READING DANGEROUSLY (FOURTH ESTATE £12.99). The author goes on a quest to read the

books that we all, in moments of social desperation, have claimed to have read. He gives himself 365 days to do so. His list of books is surprising if not altogether inspiring. The jokes that usually do the rounds about classics that we should read usually involve Dickens or Tolstoy. In this book Andy Miller throw us a few curveballs. For instance it has never been an ambition of mine to read The Communist Manifesto; Miller does and in the same timeframe as reading The Da Vinci Code! Yep like life, this tome is full of some rather delightful surprises from a writer who grew up very sensibly voraciously reading Douglas Adams which coincidentally leads me into a rather fun novel from the fertile stable of BBC Books. As part of THE HISTORY COLLECTION, THE ENGLISH WAY OF DEATH (£7.99) involves Tom Baker’s fourth Doctor and his trusty Time Lady Romana aiming for a holiday in 1930’s London. Writer Gareth Roberts is paying homage to the Douglas Adams era of Who script editing and writ-

ing and has produced a mystery, a very witty and captivating mystery at that, in the glorious style of PG Wodehouse and E.F Benson. You really can’t go wrong with a secret society run by someone with the name of Percy Closed.

Chuck in a villain Hepworth Stackhouse, the Doctor’s robot dog K9 and the sweltering London of times past is brought to life with rich dialogue and a deliciously fun romp. Jeeves, Wooster, Mapp and Lucia would approve wholeheartedly, afternoon tea permitting of course! Just keep an eye out for any suspicious extremely dangerous green vapour!

Staying in the time travel vein Ben Elton is back with a new novel. TIME AND TIME AGAIN (BANTAM PRESS £ 18.99) is also set in the early part of the twentieth century.

In recent years Ben Elton’s writing style has calmed down from the rat a tat style of his early novels which were delivered in a prose style delivered at the bullet pace of his early stand up comedy. In his new novel Elton presents

the reader with a conundrum.

Should history be changed?

Will life be all the better for it if the suicidal madness of the First World War never happens? The war began with a single bullet that determined the fate and life of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. On 1st June 1914 ex soldier Hugh Stanton faces a choice. He battles his own personal demons as he has been given the opportunity to travel back in time to prevent a war. Surely he will be doing the best thing? One new bullet counters another.

The moral dilemma is inevitable and fascinating in this vibrant page turning socially aware thriller.

WITH SEIZE THE DAY (BITEBACK PUBLISHING £20.00) you have to admire the author’s perseverance in getting the story told. Mike Read had finished the first draft of his jolly tale when he had his laptop stolen. He hadn’t backed it up and had to start from scratch. It is not a chronological tale as the author has clearly written it in the moment skipping down his timeline corridor and open-

ing doors along the way. All aspects of his life and career are touched upon some in more detail than others beginning with his stint on I’m a Celebrity… in 2004. From Radio One through to the TV highlights of Saturday Superstore all the anecdotes are here. However it is when discussing a love of poetry and his own writing that the prose really comes alive though one business venture the musical Oscar, which closed in just eight days is best forgotten. It’s a happy tale and worth the 400 page journey. These days memoirs of former Radio One DJ’s are not that common. Most seem to be busy tending to their gardens trying to prevent the burgeoning crop of Yew trees….

Last year Clive James retired from public appearances due to his ongoing battle with leukaemia and emphysema. He continues to write and his latest work is POETRY NOTEBOOK 2006-2014 (PICADOR £14.99). Over the decades James has gone on record many times siting

Poetry as his first love. This work brings poetry to life, something that isn’t easy. If approached in the wrong way then Poetry and the appreciation of it can be forever alienated. Remember old GCE’s and studying English Literature? The exam boards seemed determined to make it as painful process as possible especially for us young students studying Shakespeare with no real knowledge of the language or how it worked.

Taught without the passion or insight. Imagine if you had been taught by Clive James, we would all be poets now.

James the poet lives on, therefore his first love lives on and in this exemplary though provoking analysis Clive James is nothing short of majestic in his critical ability to nurture and weave thoughts and opinions into spun gold. Long may he do so.

NEW VENUE!

The Dancing Man Town Quay The old Maritime Museum ... it’s been 600 years in the making but its all singin and dancing now!

As many of you will know. I have been pretty critical about the way Southampton has and is being allowed to develop over the last 50 years. Often casting an envious eye at our noisy cousins down the road, as they regularly get so many things right. with public and private sectors seeming to work enthusiastically together for a common goal.

So its with absolute pleasure I’m able to report an occasion when Southampton entrepreneurs and council have successfully pulled together to achieve what I think is one of the most exciting leisure projects for many a year; namely the transformation of the old Maritime Museum at Town Quay into a brewery, bar, restaurant and venue.

It’s stunning!

Back in 2011 Platform Tavern legends - husband and wife team Stewart Cross and Mandy LaceyCross successfully started an in house brewery with brewer Aidan Lavin. So successfully that Stewart began to dream… bigger premises, showpiece building, archeological... and an obvious choice was the iconic

In keeping with the historical theme, great care has been taken to

the slate from a snooker table, the floor a mixture of recycled railway carriages and the existing parquet, while the bar’s spirit fixings are crafted from iron girders.

“This building is part of Southampton’s heritage,” says Stewart. “We’re really chuffed to have been able to restore it and will be delighted to show it to anyone that wants a look, regardless of them buying a beer. Just come in and take pictures of this beautiful building. In fact we are going to have guide and tourist information permanently available and will even be an official starting point for Southampton Guided Walks.”

For art lovers there will also be a regularly changing exhibition of the best local work as chosen by Mandy, adorning the walls. Plus the dear old council pitched in again by offering a changing selection of some of the city’s most interesting artifacts to be viewed. Worth a visit on its own in my book.

One of the features of The Dancing Man will be the open brewery which can be seen through the bar and large windows to the side.

Passionate brewer Aidan will produce 6 in-house beers to sit alongside a healthy range of real ales, lagers, wines and other mouthwatering beverages including a regular selection

use recycled materials wherever possible. The bar has been made out of a mixture of wood from a Kentucky racecourse, a Scottish distillery and

of seasonal and world beers.

At the top of a sweeping spiral staircase an open kitchen will serve modern British cuisine and encour-

and sadly neglected Maritime Museum 500 yards down the road. A quick reccy though and the team were hosing down Stewarts plans as a trifle ambitious. To bring the old Woolhouse back to life as a venue while maintaining its authenticity as a 14th century building would be a huge and expensive project and after much soul searching… dissmissed.

Southampton City Council though had other plans. They loved the idea and championed by Simon Letts and Cllr John Noon they persuaded the intrepid Platformers that with the council’s help it could be become one of the first landmark projects in the city’s redevelopment of the Town Quay area.

“I simply can’t praise the council highly enough” said Stewart. “If it wasn’t for their support we would have pulled out of this many times years ago”.

The Dancing Man is due to open late February. With 2 floors plus outside seating the beautifully restored building will certainly grab your attention as you crawl past in traffic.

My advice would be check it out.

Even if its just for a look inside one of Southampton’s iconic structures.

A growing UK trend Stewart wants The Dancing Man to be at the heart of beer-pairing in Southampton.

“There is a revolution going on with beer and food. Microbreweries have doubled in the past few years with a return to the original ‘Public House’ where landlords brewed their own beer. We’re even going to brew a champagne beer for weddings, where the happy couple can have their own recipe and brew it specifically for the day.”

DRESS DOWN, IT’S BACK! According to a zillion posts on Facebook currently, the way to get Southampton folk excited is to take them to a place that’s replaced the carpets with spit and sawdust, invite them to jump up on tables and start dancing while drinking copious amounts of real ale!

Certainly that seems to have been the case with the announcement of the reopening of the iconic Frog and Frigate pub, near Ocean Village.

Since it was rumoured it was returning under the stewardship of former hosts Derek and Lorraine Gardener there have been posts from no less than four continents! Some even wanting to make a return trip just for the reopening!

The three opening nights caused such a fuss that my hard pressed ticket selling colleagues at Southampton Music, not used to a frenzy (“Southampton? Frenzy?

You’re avin a larf?” … “Yep Frenzy!”) sold out in under 3 minutes (see... frenzy), leaving a disappointed crowd of would-be-Froggers to pass into Frog history as the now famous ‘Unlucky 52’.

What made the Frog and Frigate so special? It's hard to put a finger on it, but let's just say if you don't like making friends and you're more comfortable wearing a tie, it isn't the pub for you.

And for all the battle hardened Froggers, before you ask, yes the legendary Derek will once again be playing guitar … same songs probably!

So for a truly memorable Southampton night out, young or old, posh or can’t find a brush… get yourself along. It’s open 3 days a week from 7pm - Thursday till late and Friday & Saturday till 1pm.

And for those that are still Frog virgins... expect to grin... a lot.

Mustang Sally, Gimme Some Lovin', Take Me To The River, I Feel Good, Move On Up, Higher And Higher, Superstition, Knock On Wood ... the list goes on. The music goes on. The band goes on.

To help celebrate their 30th anniversary, The And Guide caught up with founding member and lead singer, Malc Eyers, to find out just what thirty years feels like ...

Paul Ridge Off the top of my head, there's only a handful of bands in the world that have been continuously performing for longer: The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Kiss, U2, Rush, The Cure, ZZ Top and The Stranglers. Nine. Too many fingers!

There may be more, it depends on how you classify "continuous" - lineup changes, extended sabbaticals, splinter projects .. anyway you look at it though, their run has been very impressive.

The term "legend" gets bandied about a bit too much for my liking, but in this case it's well deserved: the legendary Rufus Stone. It has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? Maybe they should change their name?? Nah, they're much too modest for that.

Anyone who's been in and around Southampton for a while and who likes live music will be familiar with the band and know that they're not in it for the fame and fortune: they do it because they love music. Sweet, soul music, no less.

Like a living incarnation of The Committments before Roddy Doyle even thought the idea up (maybe he saw them live back in the day?)

Rufus Stone are a party band, but thankfully without all the drama.

THE AND GUIDE: 30 years together. That's longer than most marriages and you get less for murder these days. How did you get together in the first place?

MALC EYERS: Henry Wright had moved to Southampton from Scotland. He'd formerly been the drummer for Lulu and her band, The Lovers, and had also played with the likes of Frankie Miller and Maggie Bell among others.

He met Solly Read (Rufus Stone's bass player) while playing with Steve Ellis and Martin Perry (yep same one [I was very young. Ed]) in the Terry Dene comback band in 1984.

It turns out, Henry had always wanted to have his own soul band so, with Solly's help, Henry hand-picked myself, guitarist Freddie Read, keyboardist Ray Drury and sax players Paul Young and Mark Barber and with that, Rufus Stone were born.

We played our first show just over thirty years ago.

When you started out, how long did you think you'd be going or didn't you even think about it?

Honestly, we never thought about it really, but our popularity grew fairly quickly after forming.

One thing I've always wondered about is the band name? Is it just because you're local or is it also a nod to the American funk band who played with Chaka Khan?

No, we're named after the place in the New Forest. We saw the road sign

one day and it just sort of sounded right.

Can you remember the first gig you ever played? Where and when was that?

Yes, it was New Year's Eve, 1984, and we were supporting the great Bob Pearce at the Onslow Pub in Bevois Valley.

How many gigs do you think you've played since then?

Oh, I honestly couldn't say - I'd only be guessing. But quite a few over the 30 years, obviously.

By my reckoning, if you performed once a month across 30 years, that's 360, so add in a few others here and there and you must be pushing 400 by now. Are their any favourite shows that stand out during that time?

Oh yes: The Royal Albert Hall with Gloria Gaynor.

Wow! How did that come about?

Well, an agent in London had seen us live and they got in touch and booked us for the show with her.

They must have been impressed and you must have been bowled over! How about nightmare gigs?

Any that you'd rather forget?

Yeah, we once played a show in Eastleigh and were actually asked to stop because we were too loud!

What's the biggest crowd you've ever played?

That would be an open air gig at Ocean Village one year, during the Round The World Yacht Race. They say there were 8,000 plus on the day. ... and the smallest?

Around thirty people in the building that is now the Maple Leaf club.

That was early 1985, and before we took off.

Mick Jagger must be sick of singing "Satisfaction" every night ... do you have any songs you ALWAYS play?

Mustang Sally.

Do you have a set list for each gig or can you just wing it after so long?

Well, we have a catalogue of over 120 songs we can chose from ...

Some bands only ever have one line-up and stay that way forever - U2

being the most famous example while there seem to be about seven or eight incarnations of The Four Tops on the circuit at any given time ... how many line-up changes or band members have you been through over the years?

Not too many at all. Over the thirty years, I'd say we've had about three major line-up changes, with the odd member coming and going along the way.

How does your current set list differ from one you might have played fifteen years ago?

We've developed as players now so we've introduced a few more adventurous tunes to keep us on our toes down the years.

The music industry has changed a lot during your time together. Do you have any advice for anyone starting out now?

Write good tunes and don't be impatient. Get some gigs under your belt even if you don't get paid.

Experience is invaluable ....

Apart from your obvious musical talents, do you have any other party pieces you'd like to share with us?

I do a good Deputy Dawg impersonation! As a kid, I was in a comedy double act with a brilliant mimic, comedian Mike Osman.

What? Deputy Dawg? I used to love that cartoon when I was young.

Explain!

Well, I used to do singing impressions, you know, Elvis, Cliff, etc. and I also did a mean Deputy Dawg .. but it was just a bit of fun.

Next time I see you live, I wanna hear it!

“WRITE ABOUT ANYTHING” He said! Well that narrows it down! I'd better start with me

Matt Black Hi, I'm Matt Black, Some of you may have heard my name (and some of those will have seen it on the side of a pot of paint!), but most will have not. I am a pianist/comedian/songwriter/record producer/ columnist (see below).

"Where were you last issue?" I hear you cry! "We looked for your column and couldn't find you!" The crowd rings out! It's a lovely feeling to be missed, thank you.

In truth I was having the busiest time of my life, running the recording studio "Hangover Hill", while trekking up and down our islands, and overseas, fulfilling many engagements on many stages. It's just started to calm down now - not that I'm complaining!

Good news that The Frog & Frigate is returning! I’ve been told that apparrently me and that mob PS Perrystone Hill are on the desired guest artist list. I do love the word desired, sounds all sort of dark and exciting... bit like me. Yep count me in. I understand landlady Loraine is an avid reader of my column so a quick question to her. “Same piano... or shall I bring one with a full scale?”

Getting back to the column one gripe as a performing musician however, is aimed at a very shadowy, slightly schizophrenic animal that could be named - "The Mic Grabber".

He or she lives a normal life, eating, sleeping, etc. Until they get to a live gig, and in the euphoria of the moment are convinced that it is they who should be performing in place of the booked artist. Worse than that, they forget to even inform anyone, least of all the tidy three piece that suddenly find themselves transformed in the blink of an eye into a fearsome foursome. And guess what? This cousin of a friend that once sang with George Michael's singing teacher's pen pal while on a free sun holiday to Ibiza... doesn't know the words, the tune, or have any manners.

Translate this situation into say the Army? Or a hospital?

Or the Red Arrows? What hilarity! Pity George’s teacher, pen pal bloke thingy doesn’t go to the House of Commons to do his thang... he might actually be of use there, not to mention welcome. Although it might be hard to tell which one is the imposter having heard some of their... correction... all of their gigs... cough... debates.

But from the point of view of those of us that are meant to be entertaining, one day... and I swear this to you all... if anyone does it again I will find their place of work, push them out of their chair and fiddle with the nuclear reactor controls, cause I think I can do it better!

See you in jail then. Oh and vote Black. I’ve no policies I just like the colour “Hear, hear! Pssst... wake up... the turns about to come on to deliver the budget”.

Three of the UK’s top singer-songwriters are coming together to visit Winchester Discovery Centre on 12 February. Performing in a unique “in the round” format, this is bound to be a warm and atmospheric evening.

PETER BRUNTNELL, although hailing from Devon, has a strong following in Winchester. Last year saw the release of his highly-praised career-spanning album “Retrospective”.

DANNY GEORGE WILSON is well known as the leader of Grand Drive and, more recently, Danny And The Champions Of The World, hailed as on of the UK’s most exciting live bands. Solo performances such as this one from Danny are rare.

Even more rare is a solo performance from Neil Halstead, leader of seminal shoegazing band Slowdive, who had a spectacularly successful reunion in 2014, selling out arenas all over the world.

Winchester Americana promoters sc4m were faced with a dilemma about their show on 19 February. They were offered Austin Lucas, the

Indianan who brought the house down when he played at the Railway this time last year. But on the same night, they were also offered Frontier Ruckus (from Michigan). For both artists, it was the only tour date available, so, with their co-operation, it was decided to “double up” and create a unique double bill. Detroit quartet Frontier Ruckus feature Matthew Milia, who spins tales of romantic failure, exorcises engrained bitterness, expresses vulnerability and wonders what became of his youth.

There are no grand statements, but the bandmates

have a moving way of delving into the minutiae of the dayto-day. Austin Lucas (pictured in 2014 at the Railway) was born into a folk and bluegrass lineage. Learning to harmonize before learning to read, Lucas rebelled against his upbringing, leaving his Americana roots for the catharsis of punk rock. After the better part of a decade spent criss-crossing the globe with a series of bands in broken-down vans, Lucas hit a musical glass-ceiling, eventually finding respite for his ringing ears in the delicacy of traditional songcraft.

It’s a strange time to be a Saints fan!

I keep trying to write our chances off this season and yet aside from our two cup exits and an injury list bigger than many team's squads things seem to be going swimmingly well. So far.

AND how bizarre is it that after Saturday's game, you look at the league table and lose interest after 5th place?

Well that’s not totally true. Seeing Bournemouth at the top of the Championship means we can maybe look forward to a new south coast rival to face in a local derby or two next season. It is especially enjoyable looking further down the league beause if we look the other way along the south coast there is now a staggering 83 places between ourselves and the Pompey Hordes. That’s out of 92 clubs!

And isn’t it Good to see that under the new supporters trust model, their fans - the best fans in the world according to some are still calling for the manager to be sacked! And he's a Pompey legend as well!

Even more amazing is Eastleigh, in the Premier Conference now sit only 12 places below Pompey. If the Portsmouth slide continues they could be playing Eastleigh in nonleague football next year - or if the Spitfires win their games in hand and keep their momentum going they could leap frog a relegated Pompey up into the football league.

And then for us, all we have to maybe look forward is Champions League football.

A strange season indeed!

NOSTALGIA... IT ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE But in spite of all this joy and excitement I still hanker nostalgically for the old days and really miss how football used to be. Here are just some of the things that I miss.* THE DELL. I know it was a dump... but the memories. Mike Channon’s Testimonial.

STANDING. Even though my joints are starting to creak a bit, I still feel the proper way to watch a game is on your feet; more fun and more atmosphere. When Saints scored you could find yourself 20 yards away from where you were stood when the goal went in. Plus you don’t have find yourself sat next to the fan from hell for a whole season. Even Standing... at the Dell... in the pouring rain... with no cover as your shoes filled with water... was fun.

Real football!

LINESMEN BEING CALLED LINESMEN. Although refs were still called … ( sorry it’s a family paper - ED ) LOYALTY THE OLD SONGS HALF TIME POLICE DOG DISPLAYS THE MILK CUP. Obviously, we still have the league cup, but one season for the milk cup at half time the Milk marketing board decided to give away free cartons of milk. One or two were drunk but most were being hurled back onto the pitch.

When the police steeped in to bring back order, the fans instead tried to use the cartoons to dislodge the coppers hats.

CHEER LEADERS (once, anyway) WAGON WHEELS PLAYERS WITH SOCKS AROUND THEIR ANKLES TELLING WHERE IN THE SEASON YOU WERE by the lack of grass on the pitch WHEN A SNEAKY ELBOW OF REVENGE BROUGHT DELIGHT. (rather than a foul and outrage) POMPEY BELOW US IN THE LEAGUE. Oh... they still are.

RATTLES. Proper rattles not baby rattles CRATES FOR KIDS. In those days you would see dads walking to the ground with a kid in one hand and a milk crate in the other.

MANAGERS WHO STAYED LONGER THAN THE PLAYERS. Yes there was a time. Chris Nicholl 6 years in charge. Lawrie (legend) McMenemy 12 years as a boss. Ted (immortal) Bates 18 years in charge as manager. 3 managers in 36 years. Compare that to the 24 years since Nicholl went when we have had a total of 24 managers!

WHAT I REALLY DON’T MISS are the events of last summer.

27TH JUNE 2014: The rest of Lovren joins his head at Liverpool. His signing on fee was used to transport his collection of Kinder Egg toys to Liverpool. (Yes, he really does collect Kinder Egg toys). Turns out he is better at organising Toys than the Liverpool defence. Brendon tells him he is sitting on the bench every game. In fact it’s the naughty step.

AUGUST 2014: Tea lady leaves Saints for Liverpool, she said “ The chance to make a cup of tea and put the milk in first as they do “up North” was too hard to resist.”

THE SUMMER 2014: Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, and Callum Chambers leave Southampton. Media constantly cracks jokes about 6-a-side league for Saints. Les Reed is suddenly presented with wheelbarrows full of fivers. About 20 million of them in fact. Media Fact: In a fire sale you sell at knockdown prices not premium prices!

NOVEMBER 2014:. In spite of spending virtually the whole season in the top 4 it seems the pundits had spotted we hadn’t played the big teams. When we did, we drew with Chelsea and beat Arsenal and Manchester United. I think by big teams they must have meant Burnley and Sheffield United. *Well maybe not the standing in the pouring rain for 90 minutes!
