Hi AND Land and welcome to another fabo edition of The AND Guide.

It seems a long time ago I was wishing the England football team the best of luck, while also pleading with you all to take us out of Europe. What I didn’t expect was the debacle that followed both.

For BREXIT I’d been inspired to pen my rant after the lack of information bun fight that had developed amongst our apparent leaders. Whichever side you supported, it was just shocking.

But without going on about the pro’s and cons of IN or OUT which is done and dusted now, or it should be, what struck me afterwards was that none of the 3 main party leaders who all voted IN were in tune with the majority of the people. How is that possible? No wonder so many young people don’t see any point in voting. It’s clear that politicians aren’t listening. AND talking about not listening... clearly too many intelligent people don’t know how the country is run. I’m talking about the ‘promises’ made by the OUT campaign. They weren’t promises. They weren’t promises because they couldn’t be. The OUT campaign was not the government, it wasn’t even a party. Those kind of spending promises can only be carried out by the Chancellor in a budget. I thought everybody knew that? The NHS funding etc was ... and I’ve trawled through pages of boring research to try find that ‘promise’ an option for spending the money that currently goes to the EU.

Despite having made a racket in this fair city and beyond for many years, I’ve been asked several times by the younger generation “Are you a musician?”. To which I reply “I hope so”. Although it does of course depend on your deaf- inition (get it?).

Anyway for anyone curious enough to want to check me out I’ll be performing once again at Southampton’s fabo Music In The City festival October 1st (p15), with my two awesomely talented buddies Tony Wright and Lou Stonehill (below). Neither of whom I’ll bet has ever been asked that same question. A far better question would be be “Tony, why did George Michael buy you a bracelet?”.

It seems to me that there are 2 things that need changing: the way politics is taught - or clearly not taught - at school, and the way we do politics itself. For the first time every vote counted. I don’t think its any coincidence that it resulted in one the biggest turnouts for a national vote ever. To reconnect people with politics we’ve got to be able to trust the worth of our vote. Personally I’d have a list on a voting slip. It would have 10 things that the party stands for and we could tick the ones that were important. Then we could hold the politicians to account. No more voting in a party because they’re big on some hot topic of the day such as school meals front page of their manifesto and then decide to put their energies and funds into lawnmowers from China which was hidden somewhere on page 199. “It was in our manifesto and you voted us in on it”. No we didn’t. The country voted that school meals was the most important, so sort it out and take the lawn mowers back. Well you get what I mean.

I’ve been so cross it’s almost inspired me to stand for election. (I said almost).

Re the other euros... the footie. I can honestly say that I’ve only ever been ashamed watching football twice. The last 2 competitions. And never have I actually cheered on the other team as I did Iceland. “Huh, huh, huh, huh, huh, huuuuuuuuuh!” (If that’s not in a song soon I’ll eat my hat) I’m actually embarrassed to wear my EURO 16 t-shirt outside the house. After 2 appaling previous competitions I was confident in the knowledge that although our manager was useless - not a single win in his previous 2 tournaments in charge - our players were at least good enough to beat Wales, and surely Iceland. Clearly not. But Woy Hodgeson did at least preserve his record and is now remembered as the only England manager who went to 3 tournaments and didn’t win a single game... while being paid - and I’ll say this slowly - fourteen million pounds apparently. Or roughly £3.5 million a year! I’m not absolutely certain as I keep reading different figures but the most conservative guess would be enough money to build a state of the art psychiatric hospital to help him understand why he was asked to attend a press conference after England had been put back on the bus. “Honestly I don’t know why I’m here? I’ve resigned”. He muttered. At which moment every England fan in the country jumped up and screamed “Because you were in charge of the most shameful exhibition of English football in our history and we want you to explain yourself... you prat!”

It does seem to me that we seem to be devoid of leaders at the moment. Is Theresa May up to the job? I thought she was a little er... non-committal lets say for BREXIT. Perhaps she was being a politician and waiting to see which side off the fence to climb over? But in fairness I have been tremendously encouraged by her surprise, but in my mind absolutely correct decision to ‘pause for thought’ Hinkley nuclear power plant in Somerset. French EDF funded by the Chinese Nuclear Power Corporation what could possibly be wrong with that? Can I just mention the words Nuclear and Somerset again? Oh and Chernobyl ... and Fukishima. Actually I’ll just throw in the word Somerset again. You can read a bit more on page 19 ish.

Anyway, enough of all that its meant to be a guide for stuff to do. AND it is so go do it. As ever the biggest diary in the South of England is in the back (page 23) - so no excuses! Go fun yourself!

If you’ve always wanted to paint with watercolours and also love animals, you’re in for a treat. Local artist Joanna Rose Tidey (work pictured above) is holding two watercolour painting days at New Forest Wildlife Park this summer and places can now be reserved.

Joanna will help participants capture some of the park’s most popular animals, such as otters, deer, lynx, owls, wallabies, foxes and wolves, or lesser known animals such as mouflon (a type of wild sheep), polecats, pine martens, ferrets, wild boar, European bison and others.

The workshops take place on Thursday 18th August and on Thursday 1st September from 10am to 4pm. The cost is £55 per person per session and includes all day admission to the park, lunch and painting materials. Booking is essential. The workshops are suitable for both beginners and improvers or people entirely new to painting with watercolours.

Joanna has been working with New Forest Wildlife Park for over a year, producing a series of paintings of the park’s animals and running workshops for children.

Her colourful prints are also on sale in the NFWP gift shop.

Joanna completed a Degree in Fine Art at the University of East London in 2010 and her vibrant, bright and colourful paintings reflect her enthusiasm for wildlife and nature. She teachers art classes, including watercolour painting, and co-runs the ORB contemporary art gallery in Southampton.

There will be other exciting activities taking place at New Forest Wildlife Park over the summer holidays too, including nature quizzes, animal encounters, keeper talks and animal feeding sessions. The Tropical Butterfly House is open over the summer, with scores of beautifully coloured butterflies fluttering among the exotic plants and foliage in a specially constructed hothouse and new pupae hatching out every week.

The park has several species of otters, including the endangered giant otter, and North American river otters, Asian short-clawed otters and Eurasian otters too. There are red, roe, fallow and sika deer as well as Scottish wildcats, hedhehogs, harvest mice, several species of owls and some reptiles.

Set in 25 acres of lovely New Forest woodland, the animals can be seen in treelined enclosures in a beautiful natural setting. There’s a well-stocked gift shop and Forest Kitchen restaurant and the ever popular Go Wild Adventure playgrounds, where children and adults of all ages can let off steam on the swings, ropes, zip wires and climbing frames.

It is protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

FUN FACT: No-one has ever been able to tame a Scottish Wildcat not even when handreared from a kitten. They are a truly WILD cat.

In or out? That has been the big question on everyone's lips recently. It is also a decision that music lovers in the local area may find they are making over the next couple of months. Thankfully, unlike the other in/out issue, this will not be something which causes heated debate, division or controversy. It is quite simply the rather endearing choice of whether to watch live music 'indoors' at some of the celebrated local venues or outdoors at some of the fabulous forthcoming festivals in the region.

For the 'In' side there is a sumptuous feast of delights on offer. At ‘up and coming band central’ The Joiners attentive power trio 'Listener', ex Union Girls vocalist ‘Cassie Ramone’, Toronto’s 'Pup' (which apparently stands for Pathetic use of Potential!), L7 influenced female rockers 'The Kut', satirical Yorkshire rapper McDevvo and the massive sound of Chicago punk elders 'The Dwarves', a band described as 'one of the last true bastions of the genre', are just some of the allures.

Endless streams of talent are once again flowing into the Brook including the Balkan flavoured sounds of 'Transylvania', local soul mainstays 'Rufus Stone', re-emerging Psychedelic Grebo heroes 'Gaye Bykers on Acid' and influential New wave of British Heavy metal gems 'Diamond Head', a band

once touted as the new Led Zeppelin and who have had no less than four of their songs covered by Metal kings Metallica. On the subject of royalty, expect to hear plenty of great stories about the King himself, when one-time Elvis guitarist ‘James Burton’ takes to the stage. There is also plenty to revel in with a dream ticket of homages to Guns N Roses, Level 42, Madness, U2, Meat Loaf, ZZ Top, Beatles, David Bowie, Oasis, ELO, Led Zeppelin, T-Rex, Fleetwood Mac, Thin Lizzy and Simon and Garfunkel.

Blood vessel busting ska troupers ‘Bad Manners’, metalcore noise merchants 'Asking Alexandria and ‘Don Broco's’ intriguing mix of Brit rock riffs, sarcastic lyrical content and jovial pop sensibilities can be found revving into action over at the Engine Rooms whilst over at the newly situated Talking Heads progressive medieval folksters 'Gryphon', blues conglomeration 'DVL', 'Sharks' (featuring Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook and one time producer Chris Spedding), ‘Simon Spilletts Jazz Quartet’ and Gary Barlow impersonator ‘Dan Hadfield’ will all be doing their thing...not at the same time unfortunately!

The 1865's assorted highlights range from Trad folk festival favourites 'Manran' and clown princes of punk 'The Dickies' to ex-specials/Fun Boy Three livewire Neville Staple and the marvellous ‘Big Country’ who will be celebrating their pivotal 30 year old hit album 'The Seer' by playing it in its entirety...if you want ‘One Great Thing’ to go and see, I'd thoroughly recommend this.

Over at The Guildhall you can behold the magnificent melodious tones of renowned Punjabi singer ‘Naseebo Lal’ and if you take a short journey across town and enter the Stage door you'll be taken on a musical journey with 'Timeless and Friends, a trip back in time with Dire Straits replica’s Dire Straits UK and on an uplifting high with gospel choir 'One Achord'.

The charmingly christened 'Internal Suffering' and 'New Device' will be amongst the metal bands wigging out at The Firehouse whilst rockabilly rogues 'Ruby and the Roughcuts' and the 'Junco Shakers' will be just some of the acts entertaining the punters at The Platform Tavern.

Saving the best two until last , Portsmouth's fantastic and ever expand-

If you get into your ‘cars’ and take a short drive down the motorway to Portsmouth you can experience some new wave synth classics with Gary Numan at the Pyramids and at the Guildhall Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists 'The Jive Aces', 'The Johnny Cash Roadshow' and the ‘Royal Marines

also relive the sheer brilliance of Buddy Holly in 'Buddy'.

Portsmouth’s other main theatre The New Theatre Royal’s big drawers are 'Edana Minghella' revisiting the songs of the legendary Billie Holliday and the ‘Rhythm and Blues big band’ interpreting James Bond songs (in their ‘Big Bond’ evening...again, see what they did there!)

The city also has plenty of great smaller venues worth checking out for some great live entertainment including The Jolly Sailor, The Auckland, The Old House at Home, The Bold Forrester, The Golden Eagle, The Fat Fox, The Admiral Drake, The Northcote, The Tap, The Eldon Arms, The RMA Tavern, The Phoenix, The Edge of the Wedge, Little Johnny Russells, The Drift and the Barley Mow. And so on to the 'Outdoors' choice...there are no less than 6 major festivals in the region in August and September with some magnificent and diverse line ups on show.

The Wickham Festival boasts a line up including Spandau Ballet crooner ‘Tony Hadley’, ex Fairground attraction starlet ‘Eddie Reader’, punk stalwarts ‘The Stranglers’, Spike Edney’s ‘SAS Band’, ‘Lindisfarne’ cockney legends ‘Chas n Dave’, ‘Steeleye Span’ and the

ing Victorious festival (held on Southsea seafront) features a host of top names with ‘Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds’, Wales’s second best band ‘The Manic St Preachers’, ‘Travis’, ‘The Coral’, Brighton folk punks ‘The Levellers’, Radio 1’s ‘Annie Mac’, ‘Echo and the Bunnymen’ and a DJ set from ‘Mark Ronson’..oh and you may also want to check out the compelling ‘Urban Voodoo Machine’, ‘The Silhouettes’ and entertaining M27's guitarist ‘Jonny Bell’.

Last but by no means least, Winchesters Boomtown festival features quite simply one of the best line ups I’ve seen in a long time (I counted around 30 bands that I’d definitely go and watch)..the brilliant ‘Asian Dub Foundation’, New York gangsters ‘Fun Lovin Criminals’, ‘The Selecter’, the ongoing and ageless ska pop phenomena that is ‘Madness’, ‘the Mad Caddies’, ‘Ms Dynamiteee’, ‘Ferocious Dog’, ‘The Orb’, ‘Tankus the Henge’, BBc's best Part time band ‘Bombskare’ and the truly awe inspiring ‘King Blues’ are just some of the many mouth-watering attractions.

So there you have it...plenty of enticing options on both the ‘in’ and ‘out’ music manifestos...which will you choose?

Maybe you'll just go for both. Whatever you do, it's a win win situation.

Should I register my brand as a trade mark?

It’s an interesting question because there’s not a definitive “yes” or “no” answer and before answering, you need to ask yourself two further questions.

First is, can I register my brand as a trade mark?

Not everything is registerable. For example, if your brand isn’t distinctive enough, or it’s descriptive of what you do or sell your application wont be accepted. Next, if it’s the same or confusingly similar to any existing trade marks the owner of those trade marks my object to your application.

There are a few more restrictions you will have to consider too. For example, you need to make sure that your brand contains nothing misleading (so you couldn’t use the word

from the enormous reputation they already have.

You will have to pay a hefty fee to use their trade marks but you know this would be well worth the investment because the strength of their brand will draw in the crowds.

Registering a trade mark also acts as a deterrent against other people copying your brand without permission. Using the same example, you wouldn’t dare open a fast food restaurant with the famous golden arches outside your door unless you had permission to do so. This is because you know McDonald’s lawyers will close you down before the first burger you serve has had a chance to be eaten!

One disadvantage of registered trade marks is that they are territorial. Your band is only protected in the countries in which the trade mark is registered. If your business is solely based in the UK you can register in the UK only at a relatively low cost.

However, if your business is international, it can become very expensive to register trade marks all over the world.

If your trade mark is registerable are you prepared to defend it? “organic” if the food you were selling wasn’t organic).

The second question to answer is, if you do register a trade mark, are you prepared to defend it?

If someone copies you brand or tries to register another brand as a trade mark and it’s too similar to yours, are you prepared to take legal action to defend it?

If you don’t, you may lose it and the time and money you invested in making the application will be wasted.

So, if your trade mark is registerable and you are prepared to defend it, should you register it? Let’s look at a couple of pro’s and con’s.

A registered trade mark can become a valuable asset (often the most valuable asset your business will own) and you can use it to generate additional income. If you have a strong brand and are well known for the products and services you sell, you could allow someone else to use your trade marks for their business in exchange for paying you a fee (a royalty).

This is effectively how a franchise works and many famous brands operate on this model. If you wanted to open a burger bar on your local high street you could spend time and money developing your own brand.

Alternatively, you could open a McDonald’s franchise and benefit

Another disadvantage of registered trade marks is that they can’t be up dated. Once registered, a trade mark is set in stone. So if, for example, you re-brand your business and want to update your logo you will have to register a new trade mark and pay all of the fees again.

So, is applying to register your brand as a trade mark a good investment for your business?

My view is that if your brand is registerable and you want to grow your business, then yes you should register it.

Businesses invest a huge amount of time and effort into building a strong brand but they often overlook the simple steps that can be taken to protect it.

My girlfriend, Mel, is a Teacher's Assistant at a school in Bournemouth, and I've always openly admired anyone who can handle the psychological and physical demands that that role demands - very akin to nurses (not forgetting many other professions too).

The age that she is working with are at the moment the youngest (‘Reception’ it's called today for anyone who had 5th year' as their last class before A levels - remember those?) and hence the most formative … and although every parent believes that their own cherub is the most gifted and intelligent in the school (you never hear them saying 'Oh he's the thickest in the class' when picking them up) there are some pupils who demonstrate signs of finding the world difficult. There are many, many reasons for this. Some of them will go on and have good jobs and safe homes etc. but some will find themselves on different paths unfortunately.

Recently a couple of teachers from slightly older years were moving to other schools and an assembly was being prepared for them comprising elements of projects that they had worked on over the past years. Mel asked my good friend Si Genaro to write a song about 'Space' as they couldn't find any suitable music for that part of the assembly. He came up with Dogs In Space (Search Youtube 'Si Genaro Dogs In Space').

I love bass players A double bass player arrived a few minutes late for the first rehearsal of the local choral society's annual performance of Handel's Messiah. He picked up his instrument and bow, and turned his attention to the conductor. The conductor asked, "Would you like a moment to tune?"

The bass player replied with some surprise, "Why? Isn't it the same as last year?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------Two bass players were engaged for a run of Carmen. After a couple of weeks, they agreed each to take an afternoon off in turn to go and watch the matinee performance from the front of house.

Joe duly took his break; back in the pit that evening, Moe asked how it was. "Great," says Joe. "You know that bit where the music goes `BOOM Boom Boom Boom'--well there are some guys up top singing a terrific song about a Toreador at the same time!" (Might need to ask a bass player to explain that one ... wink, wink)

We recorded it at my studio and went to the school one morning to practise the track with the classes involved. And that's when it happened! The kids heard the song and took to it like ducks to water (or even dogs to space). They wrote letters of thanks, drew hundreds of pictures of various dogs with helmets on, planets, comets, rockets etc. and best of all one of the lads who had learning difficulties even developed a little dance to it which the other kids adopted. Apparently nothing interests this little boy, but music did. Music got through!

We made a little video using the pictures that they had drawn and it's a huge hit amongst them. But what got me was … I wonder if this has helped any of them to find a path that doesn't lead them to peril? Barry Upton Our resident pop guru Barry is a multi international hit songwriter/producer/performer. Initially a front singer with Brotherhood Of Man he’s worked with a multitude of household names including being creator of the lovable pop outfit STEPS, penning their massive hit 5678 and his mate and editor of this ‘ere paper previously co-hosting the AND Magazine Show on Radio Hampshire. He’s currently a TV & radio presenter and producer in Thailand and of course he’s still performing!

‘Late’ Musicians When a musician dies it’s always sad. No matter what they were like in their personal lives, their music probably helped at least one person get through a hard time.

Because of this, we often feel very close to our favorite musicians and our heart breaks when we hear of the spate of recent music related passings.

I myself, as a Southampton When we hear about the recent losses of older musicians, it feels strange because you think of them as forever being the age that they were when you first heard their music. Lately, when getting on Twitter, Facebook, etc., there’s always the thought of “What musician have we lost today?” and you hope to not see your favorite in the trending topics.

Musician and pop related deaths can be some of the most heartbreaking casualties that we face all year. After all, music is one of the few things that can transcend emotion, and help us overcome our own personal tragedies. It’s certainly ironic that the music of a singer that just died can actually help us get through their passing and find a place of peace. Because of the taxing life of a rock star, there are more ‘late’ musicians than any other kind of celebrity. But in that place some call ‘heaven’, think of the amazing talent that’s jamming together up there now.

I’m sure everyone over a certain age can remember the announcement on radio and TV of John Lennon being killed? ‘How could this possibly happen?’ we were all asking. He’s a Beatle and therefore immortal.

My first experience of a rock god leaving this planet far too early was the great Jimi Hendrix. For me he was just getting started. Who knows what innovative material he could have produced in the 70s? His death however, inspired me to listen even more deeply to the music and spirit he had left behind.

Today I appreciate it even more than when he was actually living.

Then came my teenage idol Marc Bolan. The complete ‘star’ and such an inspiration to many artists. Elvis left, not only a deep hole in his innumerous fan’s hearts, but a legacy of music which is still being re-mixed and re-arranged!

This year, the loss of amazing artists like David Bowie and Prince have been even more shocking to me because of their originality and how their music has touched so many peoples lives for so many years.

When you grow up with an artist’s music, it’s part of the soundtrack to your own life and so, when they are ‘no more’, it’s like something has been wrenched from your own existence.

What a fantastic way of contributing to the world though, to leave behind a legacy which can be played for eternity.

It’s also true that an artist such as Michael Jackson will often attain his or her highest sales of records/DVDs/downloads/etc. on leaving this mortal coil. In some ways its a shame but on the other hand, the perfect way for the world to pay tribute.

Even Hendrix had to wait until he died to get his first U.K. number 1 with Voodoo Chile!

The positive side to all this is often the amazing amount of material left behind … which can mean so much to so many and available forever, delighting, even inspiring future generations.

My point is that musicians, pop stars and artists of all shapes and genres, have a gift that they can share with the world, a gift that can be enjoyed long after they have gone. This is why being such a creative human and being able to reach out and touch so many people with emotion is an amazing attribute.

We should all be inspired by the legends that have gone before us to do or create something that will leave our mark on others and enhance their lives the way our rock and pop heroes have done for us.

So let’s raise a glass or two to Buddy, Hank, Lemmy, Amy, Bowie, Prince, M.J., Elvis, Freddie, Bolan, Hendryx, Lennon, Harrison … the list is extensive (not forgetting the wonderous 5th Beatle, George Martin) … and thank them for making us all realise that it’s possible for an artist to live on with the music they leave behind.

As 2016 rolls on, so shall the inevitable yoke of time, pulling along more musicians to that land beyond consciousness. Turn the volume up to 11 and remember … great artists are never ‘late’ (see what I did there?)

Well said Bazza and while we’re raising glasses lets not forget our local heroes including my dear and missed mates Stevie Ellis, Martin (Cuddles) Smith, Mick Fletcher, Rick and Burnsey Brown, Ray Graves, Bruce Roberts and Roger Pope ... (and my most sincere apologies to all the other fantastic players my fuddled brain can’t think of at the moment.) If I relax enough I can still hear them! Cheers boys!

Worldwide Sporting Events GO SEE THEM!

This summer sees the worlds’ best athletes coming together to compete in the Olympics being held in the culturally diverse city Rio de Janeiro in the South American country of Brazil.

Now Rio hasn’t been without its problems what with cash flow issues meaning the infrastructure of the stadiums has been delayed and with some athletes refusing to compete due to the ongoing threat of the Zika virus.

But thankfully the Games seem to be on track and look set to be an enthralling few weeks for sports fans around the globe!

It got me thinking about all the amazing sporting events around the world that British fans can travel to and enjoy whilst taking in the sights and sounds of the cities and countries hosting the events. There’s the obvious biggies such as the glamourous Grand Prix, the Ryder Cup and the Australian Open Tennis but what about some of the other

THINKING OF TURKEY? After the failed military coup in Turkey in July and also numerous other incidents in Istanbul and Ankara, consumers are understandably feeling cautious about travelling to the Turkish holiday resorts in the South.

However, reports from Travel Counsellors’ customers are that it is mainly ‘business as usual’ in many of the beautiful resorts such as Kalkan, Icmeler, Olu Deniz and Side. Turkey is a vast

In August the Olympic Rowers won’t see much down time as the World Rowing Championships take place straight after Rio in Rotterdam. The city with Europe’s largest seaport is cosmopolitan and compact and home to 170 nationalities. With great nightlife and fantastic new hotels, Lonely Planet describes Rotterdam as “one of the most happening cities in Europe right now.”

If you’re a fan of horse racing and have some time to spare you can attend the Melbourne Cup in Victoria. This iconic race meeting is held at Flemington Racecourse just North of Melbourne at the start of November and draws in huge crowds of around 120,000 with Sponsorship from big names such as Emirates Airlines. With a population of 4.5 million, Melbourne is fast becoming as popular as Sydney due to its cosmopolitan vibe, worldclass arts and cultural heritage. With amazing restaurants serving up everything from Mexicana, Spanish tapas and Chinatown delights there’s something for everyone. Oh and if you like wine there’s the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula wineries just on the doorstep. November is a great time to

Rugby is one of those sports that has diehard fans who love to travel the world getting their fix of their international teams. Between 3rd June and 18th July 2017 New Zealand will host the British and Irish Lions Tour, playing 10 matches on their tour of NZ including 3 test matches against the 2015 World Cup Champions, the All Blacks. One of those matches will be in Auckland on 24th June 2017 which would be a great start for a camper van tour of the North Island taking in the natural thermal region of the Bay of Plenty where you can watch the geysers erupting. Then head to Rotorua for a relaxing stay followed by a visit to Lake Taupo which was formed as a result of one of the greatest ever volcanic eruptions ever recorded.

For those cricket fans looking for something way more relaxed why not follow the England team whilst they tour the West Indies in February 2017. Starting in the beautiful island of St Kitts, then moving to Antigua and finally finishing in Barbados which is hugely famous for its cricket, where at Kensington Oval, the Mecca for Windies cricket, it all began back in

1882. Now the ground holds 28,000 fans and hosts many International matches. February is a great time of year to visit the Caribbean with temperatures in the mid-late 20’s and with only an 8 hour flight it’s not too far to head to follow your favourite sport!

And finally for something a bit different, what about visiting Houston in Texas for the 51st Superbowl to be held in February 2017?

This world-renowned American Football event is watched by millions around the world with the ‘Half Time Show’ being a concert in its own right. The event has a 10 day festival in the lead-up to the main game on the Sunday evening and officials in Houston are expecting around 500,000 visitors to the city including 1200 from the media and 20,000 volunteers. It seems to be a slightly bigger affair than the FA cup!

The night got underway thanks to the fantastic Mark Bulley who was the compere for the evening who had the room in the palm of his hands during the Auctions helping us to raise a fantastic amount!

Judith Stephens from Southampton Hospital Charity was also on hand to speak to the guests about the wonderful work that the charity does, and how much of difference it will make to E1 ward with the money we are raising.

After enjoying a 4 course dinner with a table Magician wowing us with his magic tricks, there was plenty of dancing to the sounds of Groovejuice who had everyone up on their feet!

It was a fantastic night, and I'm pleased to say that we raised an enormous amount between £8-9,000!!

Still waiting on some funds to come in and then we will do the final figure.

And I would like to say a big thank you to my team Ann-Marie Dhanda and Kate Mcrae, without their help I could not have put this together.

THIS ISSUE SEES US SPOTLIGHTING TWO YOUNG AND VERY DIFFERENT LOCAL BANDS, THE VILLANOVAS AND TEMPLES OF YOUTH.

Temples Of Youth One of the most interesting bands of recent years has been ethereal electro outfit London Grammar and I was immediately reminded of them when I heard the first few bars of Temples Of Youth's Churches. The beautiful, emotive vocals and the crystal clear guitar shine through and lift the listener to another place. This is music to get lost in and I love it.

The Cocteau Twins also spring to mind, as do Massive Attack, but delve a bit deeper and you find Temples Of Youth have a very distinctive style all of their own.

Paul Gumma and Jo Carson have been honing theat sound with the live environment in mind and will be playing our very own Joiners Arms on 10 August and again on 30 September at The Notes Cafe. With Jo on percussion, Paul on guitars, and synths and samplers backing them up, it should make for an interesting experience.

As with The Villanovas, there's definitely something retro about Temples Of Youth despite the hi-tech wizardry and modern, minimalist grooves.

Whether it's the purity of the lyrics, the clarity of the musicianship or just that the electronic music has been around since for forty years, there's something timeless about what they do.

Their beautiful ballad, AM, for example, could have been released as a Motown slow-groove in another era, or even as a jazz standard sung by candlelight. Enso brings them firmly back to the 80s, with a 4AD-meets Human League vibe all of its own.

I'm hoping for an album release at some point, preferably on vinyl too as their eye for design is as clean as their sound, and I can imagine a double gatefold on a glossy white 12" sleeve. More please! www.templesofyouth.co.uk and Soundcloud.com/templesofyouth

THE VILLANOVAS: LIVE IN MEXICO RECENTLY (DO YOU GET THE TITLE NOW? AH... CLEVER EH?)

The Villanovas Championed by The Frog & Frigate and often seen there and The Joiners The Villanovas are a fourpiece blues rock band hailing from Bournemouth and London.

With a driving sound and a classic style, they name The Rolling Stones, Led Zep and Humble Pie among their influences along with more modern acts like The Strypes and Artic Monkeys, and claimed both the Larmer Tree Breakthrough and Blues Magazine's Band To Watch awards in 2015.

Their current single, Honest Man, is available now for download at the usual online outlets along with previous release The Villanovas EP featuring the lead song, Burning Planes.

With a name taken from a Jimi Hendrix song title, as you might expect they do love a good riff.

Honest Man actually brings to mind a mash-up between early 70s-Stones and The Stone Roses, with lots of harmonised backing vocals and wah-wah underpinning a blinding

solo and a crowd-friendly chugger of a tune. There's even a hint of Paul Weller at his heaviest in there too, with a nice dollop of soul in the mix. I don't mean Barry White when I say that : I mean emotion, raw and bleeding ..

The five-track EP really sets the tone for The Villanovas and you can clearly hear what shaped them as a band, with elements of late-era Beatles' McCartney in Ounce Of Pity and Lennon in Talking To Strangers.

What I like about the band is their ability to not just straddle genres, but also to appeal to both classic rock fans and a younger audience simultaneously. It's obvious they spent a lot of time going through their parents' record collections and that they're proper musos and know the weight of everything that came before them.

They've got the knack of being both current and retro at the same time, which isn't as easy as it sounds. The balancing act between using vintage equipment but still

sounding relevant is tricky and it's not achieved by recording in a garage on an old four-track then bunging something out on Soundcloud. It's more nuanced than that. Think Lenny Kravitz, The Foo Fighters and Mark Ronson and you'll know what I mean. ... or The Rolling Stones themselves. They've been doing it for nearly sixty years, after all.

Having just come back from a tour of Mexico, The Villanovas are about to embark on a festival circuit across Canada and have - stop press - just been named Richer Unsigned Band Of The Week by Richer Sounds.

BOOKS red & rit This issue it’s nice to include a book by a Southampton lad done good. Chris Grayson is the brains and driving force behind some of the country’s most successful music competitions including Open Mic UK and Live and Unsigned (despite using our esteemed editor as a judge). He can also claim to have discovered Birdy, Jahméne Douglas and Lucy Spraggan, so is perfectedly placed to pen his book The Secret To Success In The Music Buisiness ... but more of that later.

If you were asked to write about your father, what would you say? This is the tagline to My Old

Man: Tales of Our Fathers (Canongate £14.99 EBook £12.99). You never appreciate your parents until it is often too late and it only struck me when I was a walking talking fully functioning adult with batteries included, that my parents were also human beings, I know, bit of a shock eh?

This anthology edited by Ted Kessler collects a selection of essays from a real pot pourri of the famous and infamous from all corners of the social spectrum and produces moving, funny, poignant and bittersweet accounts of fatherly relationships from siblings who are speaking from the heart, often decades after.

Food for thought and time to revisit relationships bonded in time. The book thankfully steers clear of sugary smoltz, no need to dig out well worn copies of the Luther Vandross ditty, Dance with My Father a song not to be listened to without a convenient bucket nearby.

Mid summer is not the season for ghost stories but there is a new study of the Paranormal that is worth a look, Ghosts from

the Past (Ebury Press £9.99) written by Eric Gilbert and Abby L. Yates who also feature quite heavily in the new Ghostbusters movie, I

agree I can’t quite believe it either! With all the ghostly shenanigans going on, how did they have time to write a ghost busting manual? We are all easily spooked and if this is the case, pick up a copy of the book to find out what to do if a fiendish poltergeist pops up out of the cistern at an inopportune moment.

Steer clear of that sudden and unexpected ectoplasm embarrassment and avoid the fear of a confrontation with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Who are you going to call? I’m dialling now.

Life Lost in Music (Sphere £18.99) Sylvia Patterson recalls her glory years as a music journalist. Beginning in Dundee, working for DC Thompson on an eclectic range of magazine titles she answers an add for staff writer on Smash Hits, gets the job and moves to London. From early beginnings, Sylvia’s memoir is an honest, funny and raw account of living through the plastic pop of the 1980’s through to the more intense Brit Pop years of the mid 1990’s and beyond.

She encounters the famous

and infamous along the way and what stands out in this electric memoir of a life really well lived is the prose itself. As each page is turned, Sylvia’s story takes you over and her turn of phrase plus electric way with words draws you in. Rather like a theatre play that destroys the forth wall you are living this life with her. Superb.

This year I celebrated a milestone birthday and waking up to discover I’m in my sixth decade is a little disconcerting. Miranda Sawyer mentions in her book on midlife Out of

Time (4th Estate £12.99) how in her twenties going out could lead to a life of infinite possibilities, that glorious first drink leading to waking two days later in a skip in an unspecified location. Those were the days! Forward to the present day and she’s driving an estate car on her way to buy some storage boxes and a balance bike.

found that she was falling out of love with herself.

Last time she checked she was in her twenties and now all the things that had seemed remote during those years, responsibilities, marriage, children, and death were now at the forefront of her thoughts.

This book confronts midlife from someone who has reached the second half and now five years on from that early forties awakening, gains a perspective that could benefit all of us.

A mid life re-evaluation, a sports car or Harley aren’t needed, just time to think and realise you don’t miss those hangovers, disastrous love affairs or a waistline that matches your age when you were a lot younger. Not sure about the last one. A set of storage boxes is fine, for now.

As story-tellers go, Roald Dahl's not had a bad run at the cinema.

The original adaptation of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory was one of the greatest family movies of all time, Gene Wilder skilfully tiptoeing between fun-loving eccentric and menacing controlfreak and just about keeping Willy Wonka the right side of sanity. Jonny Depp's version was great, if a lot darker, while James And The Giant Peach was a surreal nightmare wrapped up in Tim Burton-style stop-motion magic. Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda and The Witches were all lovingly and faithfully brought to the big screen, such is the reverence in which Dahl is held by Hollywood.

But what of one of his last great tales, The Big Friendly Giant ?

Well, going into this one more familiar with the serialised newspaper cartoon strip than the original novel, I didn't really know what to expect. The trailers had been running for months and Mark Rylance seemed to be this year's hottest property as a character actor, having deservedly won the Oscar for his role as the Russian agent in the superb Bridge Of Spies. There was a visual nod of respect to Spielberg's own ET with the little girl's hand grabbing the finger of the BFG in the poster, but apart from that I knew very little of the actual story.

London. Anytime in the last century. Morris Minors and orphanages. Puddled streets and a troubled child.

The BFG opens gently, almost like a dream, as we meet Sophie - played to perfection by Ruby Barnhill - a bright, curious girl who seems to have suffered no illeffects of losing her parents other than to be bored and highly imaginative both at the same time.

Already outsmarting the staff of the children's home, she stays up late at night, stalking the corridors, waiting patiently for something to happen .. or someone.

She knows. She knows something. Maybe she's seen or heard it .. or maybe it's just in those books she likes to read. But she knows something happens at night, when the world sleeps.

And so she keeps watch. Watching and waiting.

Waiting for The BFG.

ANYONE LIKE TO HAZARD A GUESS AS TO WHERE THIS PICTURESQUE CHILDREN’S HANGOUT IS? From the timeless, meandering first act, the story propels the viewer through the next two or three chapters as Sophie finds herself bundled up by her new acquaintance - not yet a friend - and hurtling across the land at breakneck speed as the giant heads for home, back to Giant country.

Living in an organic cave-tree-house kind of a dwelling full of Heath Robinson-esque gadgetry, Sophie's new world is revealed. There's plenty of danger, plenty of enemies, but all the while there's the BFG, there to protect her and hide her from the other, less friendly and much bigger giants.

There are secrets, both in what the BFG does and what he has done.

He shares some with Sophie, but others she finds out for herself.

Then there's the little matter of meeting the Queen played by Penelope Wilton - and of averting an international crisis. Only then is the story really dated (and only then by Nancy Reagan and Boris Yeltsin) but it doesn't matter because this isn't just Giant country, this is Dahl country so you know everything's going to be fine.

If you feel I'm being deliberately vague, it's for a reason : I actually saw the final trailer after I saw the movie and I felt let down that one of the best gags was ruined by it, so - as usual - there'll be no spoilers from me.

This is a proper British film with a proper British script and proper British actors set in Britain with British values and British jokes and it's bloody Britishly funny and brilliant and is absolutely perfect for the whole family. There's no smut or split level gags that work for mums and dads but not kids - it's all just good, clean, original fun.

Rylance is amazing as the BFG, with just the right level of humble country-bumpkin mixed with common sense and decency. The accent is spot-on : I always expected the giant to sound like he hailed from Bristol, but maybe that's just me. He's also nailed the script, which is no mean feat given there's more gobbledegook in evidence here than a Stanley Unwin one-man-show.

The look of the picture is also perfect, being a mix of Spielbergian utopia and Quentin Blake madness. There are no flaws in the effect, either - it's seamless in just about every conceivable way.

Wilton as the Queen? I wasn't too sure initially, but once she slipped on the glasses and a dressing gown (!) she was every inch Liz II. Ruby Barnhill is one to watch : Sophie is often scared, determined, dauntless and inquisitive all in the same scene, but she holds her own against the rest of the cast.

The music is by none other than John "Star Wars" Williams himself, while the script was written by Melissa Mathison, who wrote ET. This is a Spielberg picture, in case you'd forgotten. In short, The BFG is a marvellous movie that everyone should watch and I can't praise it highly enough.

What are you waiting for ?

Greenpeace has always fought - and will continue to fight thank God - vigorously against nuclear power because it is an unacceptable risk to the environment and to humanity. The only solution is to halt the expansion of all nuclear power, and for the shutdown of existing plants.

A BRIEF GUIDE: We need an energy system that can fight climate change, based on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Nuclear power already delivers less energy globally than renewable energy, and the share will continue to decrease in the coming years.

Despite what the nuclear industry tells us, building enough nuclear power stations to make a meaningful reduction in greenhouse gas emissions would cost trillions of dollars, create tens of thousands of tons of lethal high-level radioactive waste, contribute to further proliferation of nuclear weapons materials, and result in a Chernobyl-scale accident once every decade. Perhaps most significantly, it will squander the resources necessary to implement meaningful climate change solutions.

The Nuclear Age began in July 1945 when the US tested their first nuclear bomb near Alamogordo, New Mexico. A few years later, in 1953, President Eisenhower launched his "Atoms for Peace" Programme at the UN amid a wave of unbridled atomic optimism.

But as we know there is nothing "peaceful" about all things nuclear. More than half a century after Eisenhower's speech the planet is left with the legacy of nuclear waste. This legacy is beginning to be recognised for what it truly is.

Things are moving slowly in the right direction. In November 2000 the world recognised nuclear power as a dirty, dangerous and unnecessary technology by refusing to give it greenhouse gas credits during the UN Climate Change talks in The Hague. Nuclear power was dealt a further blow when a UN Sustainable Development Conference refused to label nuclear a sustainable technology in April 2001.

The risks from nuclear energy are real, inherent and ever-lasting. Oh and did I mention the Chinese financiers?

NOTES CAFE? IT’s GOT THE LOT, go visit!

Recently I had the pleasure of doing a debut gig with my band PS_PERRYSTONE HILL at one of Southampton’s newest venues Notes. I knew I liked the people, they’ve been advertising with me and a positive joy. (Hence little freebies like this. Ed) As a music venue though I’m a little more fussy.

Fussy some say. I’ve been a musician my entire adult life and lost count of the apparently professional venues where access is across an old WW2 minefield situated up 3 flights of stairs to a shoebox of a stage with a single electric socket the wrong side of a door. Not so Notes. The ‘get-in’ is a parking spot 10 feet from a stage you could fit Rufus Stone on, with more plugs than WAVE 105 give anyone that pays them. On top of that the PA is perfect. Certainly in the opinions of my PS buddies and muso geeks Lou Stonehill and Tony Wright who turn fussy into a whole new universe. 5 minutes it took for our soundcheck. Director James is a fellow musi-

cian and in his words “I just put everything in I wanted” and he has. Together with fellow Director Jo they’re pouring much love into what could and should be a special little corner of the city centre just a stone throw down the hill from the Bargate.

Certainly the feedback I’m getting from bands is great. NOTES just needs to establish itself on the venue circuit as far as you the music loving public are concerned. All venues, particularly new small venues need support. They need customers. This one is certainly worth your investment. And also doubling as a cafe and a bar you can pretty much enjoy any craving musical culinary or liquidwise you might have. Go visit!

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE THEN I’M A STEAK AND EGGS KINDA GUY

Y’know, before I was a filmmaker, I was a vocalist in various wee bands, not the best in the world, but I loved it.

Later, I managed a group called ‘Perfectly Frank’, they really were brilliant, a pop band- playing the then current chart music and they were most impressive. I then went to Highbury College in Portsmouth on a Media Communications B-TEC before becoming a professional actor and finally writer/director. On my travels- Cannes in this case, I met a couple of guys who were sales agents for one of the biggest

organisations in the world. They went independent, forming their own business and we have been firm friends for nearly twenty years since. One of these fellows, Mark Vennis, also plays in a band… ‘A Different Place’… so this interview is about a guy whose vocation is film and whose passion is music.

Mark Vennis and A Different Place are a four-piece from Petersfield in Hampshire. They played at two Strummerfests, at Guilfest, supported the Alabama 3, played at the Cannes Film Festival 2016 and at the Dingle Film Festival in Ireland as well as Music in the City, (where they will hopefully be again this year) in Southampton amongst many others.

In fact, Mark and the band are playing Wickham Festival in August, same bill as ‘The Stranglers’, it promises to be a fantastic event. ‘Mark and A Different Place’ played there last year but I missed the gig … I’ll be there this year.

Breaking the habit of a lifetime I thought I’d let someone else get a word in for you. Well it is summer!

Who were your early influences Mark?

Well, I was excited by bands like The Jam and the album Sandinista by ‘The Clash’. Then it was Bruce Springsteen and that powerful energy, a big sound but also lyrically poignant.

Johnny Cash and BB King also were massive influences and I guess that’s why we write story-based songs, about the ordinary and extraordinary.

How then would you describe your actual sound?

Roots rock with attitude. It’s a fusion of blues and rock, reggae too, in fact there’s probably a bit of everything in there- certainly our work appeals to a wide audience.

So you write or produce your own material?

Sure, of course, covers are great if you want to be a tribute band but if you want to be noticed and build a following, then of course ya need to produce unique material. I started writing songs in my teens, most serious musicians do.

But I have to say, I think I only started to believe in myself at about thirty years old, that’s when ‘I knew’ I was good.

You have to get to a certain age before you’ve experienced life… it’s those rich and diverse screw-ups and upsets, unrequited love, political unrest, coming of age and starting to feel old, ha, that gives a song its soul. I was confident and comfortable with the sound I was creating. I’m not interested in mindless pop, y’know, I have things to say.

Who are the other creatives in the band?

It’s a really good line-up, but we are the band of strange surnames… on bass we have Dave Sweetenham, Daniel Hunnisett on guitar and the drummer is Brian Gee. These are the core members of the band. They are brilliant musicians.

You took ten years out, why?

I was putting a lot of energy into the business and there just wasn’t time for the band as well, it’s a big commitment.

I have a family and they are important to me, it’s easy to get lost out there on the road somewhere. I’m not a kid, I don’t have great big financial aspirations, it’s not about that, it’s about the music, and like I said- the stories, it’s a transformative creative outlet, I’m for joining people, bringing them together with us, in a kind of unity, where we all are involved in the experience, simultaneously, it’s about connection. What the Hell, I live to perform.

Every rehearsal room comes fully equipped with a high standard of gear, complete with a PA, vocal mics and stands, drum kit and guitar and bass amps. They are also fully air conditioned, and have large comfy sofas.

The Wickham Festival organisers look set to achieve their “impossible dream” by topping last year’s awardwinning event.

The hugely-popular four-day fiesta was voted Best Festival (Under 15,000 capacity) at last year’s Live UK Music Business awards posing the problem of how to make it even better.

But with Tony Hadley, The Stranglers, Lindisfarne and the SAS Band featuring Roger Taylor of Queen confirmed as this year’s headliners and ticket sales soaring, organiser Peter Chegwyn is confident this will be the best event yet.

He said: “We were absolutely delighted to win that prestigious award but it did present us with a massive challenge to keep improving. It was hugely successful so how do you top perfection?

“It was tough but we have secured a fantastic line-up this year. There is an amazing array of musicians which has been reflected in ticket sales and I really believe this will be even better than last year.

“Unfortunately we are not allowed to enter the awards again this year but our success has really put Wickham on the map and the great thing is that we no longer have to approach bands – they are coming to us!

“We have had so many artists asking to play here that it was tough to whittle the list down.

But I think we have a fantastic array of bands who will provide wonderful entertainment.

“And of course we have the usual array of craft and clothing stalls as well as a big variety of high quality food outlets and a wide range of activities for children who can roam safely.”

Spandau Ballet frontman Hadley tops the bill on the opening night on August 4 with the Stranglers and Bruce Foxton’s From the Jam as the main attractions 24 hours later.

Headlining on Saturday will be Spike’s All Stars Band with a line-up which will include Queen drummer Roger Taylor, former Marillion lead singer Fish, Madeline Bell and solo artist/actress Toyah Willcox with a chance of other top names also making a guest appearance.

They will be supported by the Trevor Horn Band who are likely to perform a range of hits produced by the legendary frontman who worked closely with Frankie Goes To Hollywood as well as Yes and Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas. Also on the bill are Oysterband plus Chas & Dave.

Lindisfarne close the four-day event on Sunday August 7 with strong back-up from Steeleye Span, Hayseed Dixie and festival favourites the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

In addition to the three regular stages, there will now be a fourth platform where local and unsigned bands can perform with a view to possibly landing themselves a contract or at least gaining further exposure.

Chegwyn added: “We pride ourselves on our family-friendly reputation and tickets are already selling well with sales up on last year’s record-breaking event.

“There is a real feelgood factor about this event which reflects our rapidly-growing reputation locally, nationally and internationally with fans coming from the USA, Canada and even Australia.

“Parents can enjoy the music knowing their youngsters are being well entertained.

The atmosphere is very chilled and relaxed which is why so many people book to come back year after year, even before the line-up is announced.

“But with so many top names now confirmed we are looking forward to this being our biggest and best event yet.”

Weekend tickets are £160 or £80 for Under 16’s with Under 10’s admitted free. Day tickets for Friday, Saturday or Sunday can be bought for £60 (£30 Under 16’s) while evening tickets (after 6pm) are £40 (£20).

MILBURYS CC The highlight of the cricket season is undoubtedly our annual tour, which this year was again a trip to Shoreham-BySea in Sussex to stay at the Crabtree Inn. Three days, two games, lots of beer and lots of singing. To quote one member of our party, “This is like a stag do, but with cricket!”

We filled up a minibus and headed down on the Friday afternoon, stopping off in a few pubs in Arundel (lovely place) on the way, then spent the evening at the pubs in Shoreham. On Saturday we played a match against Gemini Print (which we won) and on Sunday we played the Jamaica Inn Pirates (which we lost, but not by much). The rest of the time was spent eating, drinking and behaving exactly as you’d expect a group of men would do when allowed away for the weekend without their other halves.

QUACK QUACK The cricket sometimes takes a back seat while on tour but there were some important matters to settle as two of our members went into the first match with two ducks in a row to their name. If you aren’t familiar with a cricketing duck then it means that you didn’t score any runs, and so in this case we had two people who hadn’t managed a single run in both of our previous two matches. Unfortunately one of the people in question was me, and the other shall remain nameless but he has more than a little hand in the publication of this paper On that basis I’m sure that this will be edited out, (Thought about it. But thanks for bigging me up last issue. I’ve not scored a run since. No one likes a creep Skip! Clearly not the cricket gods! Ed) but I’m glad to report that I managed the required run to get “off my duck” but my teammate wasn’t so lucky and now becomes the second player in our history to win the much talked about Triple Duck award. To pile on further misery he then managed to stop the ball with his face on the Sunday and suitably injured never got a chance to finally score that elusive run. The wait goes on… (I’m thinking about it again! Didn’t mention my 1 for 5 bowling I notice?(

Oh dear, you appeared to have dropped a catch, misfielded the ball or completed some other action that I deem to be fine-worthy.

Commiserations, but also I hope you’ve brought your wallet.

“THAT WERE FOOKIN’ PLUMB” My dearest umpire, sir. The ball has hit the batsman’s legs vaguely in line with the stumps, and I believe I have a valid claim for LBW. I’ve been bowling for 20 minutes and I’m knackered now so can you please just give him out so we can all get to the pub?

CENTURION Finally I just want to say hats off and many congratulations to my vice-captain Jim Skinn for his record breaking 116 in one of our tour matches, the highest ever individual score for the Milburys. It was great to see the whole team rooting for him as he approached the landmark, and to see the celebrations afterwards despite coming in a losing cause. Cricket is often noted as a game of glorious uncertainty – it can all change in a flash – so hopefully his innings will serve as an inspiration to those of us at the other end of the achievement scale, and today’s triple duck will soon become tomorrow’s hundred. (Ah... you’re doing it again Skipper. Ed)

Also on tour, our wicket keeper Jim gamely agreed - while drunk - to shave off half his moustache to raise money for ovarian cancer charities. Nobody wanted to know how the owner of the Indian restaurant we were in at the time managed to find the razor, but he got one from somewhere, and “Mad Mark” set about Jim’s face with gusto. He would have had an eyebrow off as well if Mark had had his way, but to the disappointment of many it was just half the moustache. A quick whip around the table produced £140 for a cause which is close to Jim’s heart, so well done Jim.

The boy from ipenema So four years ago I found myself sat on the sofa post knee op watching one of great shows on earth come go London, of course it was that glorious summer of 2012 when Olympic fever gripped the nation. Watching the flurry of gold come to team GB that year I sat there thinking how can I get to the Olympics? One of the the pinnacles of sport. Now I'm nowhere near as fast as Usain Bolt, I certainly can't throw a javelin and let's not even attempt rhythm gymnastics Phew! Ed). But surely there had to be a way?

Well luckily for me the Olympic Games needs presenters and I made it. I'm off to Rio and off to an Olympic Games! I will be presenting the Hockey. I am also fortunate to be heading over for the Paralympic Games to present the Wheelchair Tennis. An amazing opportunity which I can't wait for! By the time you read this I will be on Brazilian soil and if you want to keep up to date with my adventure please follow me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook @michaelkurn. Hopefully I will be able to give you a behind the scenes look at the greatest show on earth.

This time of year also sees the return of the Premier League and I’m very excited and pleased to be back presenting the world feed for my 3rd season. I will be back in the studio at PL HQ presenting Fanzone plus resuming my pitch side duties up and down the UK. This season will be interesting to see how our Saints get on? After seven progressive seasons, and with another new manager, once again a new set of challenges awaits. European football and so much more... can this season be another record breaker? I think securing some key players on long term deals is a good move for the club and a couple of exciting new additions have certainly added to what the side offers. I also think Puel is a great signing as manager. It will interesting to see how he attempts to take the side to the next level.

Another local side looking to do well will be Eastleigh. Manager Chris Todd has certainly assembled a great side to take on their title challenge. With a new development at the ground also approved its going to be a big year at the Silverlake. Can they go further in the FA Cup? Can they win the National League?

Still plenty of other sport going on as well which is always great to see. Local leagues will be getting underway and best of luck to you all.

I know Martin will be keeping a keen eye on his beloved Hedge End Rangers (Life Vice President nip COYB! Ed).

Another Season. Another Manager.

Although you can never rely on the weather in an English summer, you can rely on weeks of turmoil and change at Southampton Football Club. This summer started with Sunny outbreaks (finishing 6th), thunderstorms (Everton want Koeman) clearing later (Koeman says he’s going nowhere) followed by torrential floods ( of players and a manager leaving the club). Currently, as I write, we are in the midst of a brief heat wave (bought two new players and a new manager) but the outlook is uncertain (are they any good). That said, we are looking forward to an Indian summer (top at the end of September) and a mild winter (no big name sales in the winter transfer window. Still top four) with the odd Hurricane (30 goals for Long).

As usual, when last season ended, we saw Southampton in its new role as tinder for the Premier League. This is where ambitious players nobody has heard of sign up to Saints, in the hope of that lasting liaison with a fading top 4 club like Liverpool or Spurs. Well not all of them.

Some of them decide to stay at the club and then go on to win a medal in Europe. Fonte and Cedric champions of Europe! Who would have thought it? Outperforming even the might ex Saints Gareth Bale and Adam Lallana. And was it just me disappointed that Lallana escaped being badly tarnished by the England teams embarrassing exit to “Huh! Huh! Huh! Huh! Huh! Huuuuuh!”

Iceland. Imagine being an attacking midfielder and not being good enough to get into that side?!

For the third year running, the Liverpool transfer committee had their annual visit to Southampton. Dropping the wives off at West Quay for some big money spending while they nip across to Staplewood for some even bigger money spending. Mane from £8m million to £38 million in two years. That’s 475% return on the clubs investment! Had I put £8m million in my bank I would have made about £300k! That said, on his day Mane can be the world’s best player.

But as we know from his erratic performances, that day is a bit like February 29th. It doesn’t come around too often. Can’t be long either before a bid comes in from Klopp for the Marwell Zebra at St Marys! £25 million maybe?

While Liverpool have a record of buying our better players, albeit at inflated prices, Everton seemed to have latched onto the same concept.

But under Koeman they are coming in for our “broken biscuit” players. Ronald’s one and only signing so far is Maarten Stekelenburg, which must have the Everton fans wondering about the Koeman revolution. The only other signing on the horizon is the rumour he is possibly looking to buy our right back Martina. Liverpool soon will be the Southampton of the north and with Ronald pulling the strings on these masterful transfers at Everton I guess it’s a good time to reflect on his time at Saints.

THE KOEMAN EFFECT One minute he was walking on water, loyal and successful, then one Sunday we all read a blog, based on information seemingly “leaked” from the club, that was suggesting a different man behind the scenes. Events do seem to suggest that Ronald was prepared to see out his contract but was unlikely to sign for any longer than that one season. The Southampton board obviously wanted more commitment than that

THE FRENCH CONNECTION Having gone Dutch for the last two seasons, Saints have broken the lorry blockade at Calais and brought over a rare French import. Checking the record books, Saints and France don’t have much history. Prior to the arrival of Claude Puel, we have only seen 11 French players on our books … ever! The most prominent being Morgan Schneiderlin but I guess Patrick Colleter and Fabrice Fernandes are worthy of mention. But here’s a question for you. Why does Claude Puel only have one egg for breakfast? Because one egg is an oeuff! Enough… Egg… Its French for egg… ? Okay my coat’s on its way!

and also probably weren’t happy on one key part of his management style. That is his aversion to youngsters. If you look back at the stats over his two years, with the exception of Matt Target’s forced entry into the team due to injury to Betrand, no youngsters were getting first team appearances. In two years the likes of Harrison Reed, Sam Gallagher Lloyd Isgrove etc. never made a first team start. In fact in two years apart from Matty only Jake Hesketh made a league start… and just the once. For the Saints Academy conveyor belt this was obviously unacceptable. Certainly, off the record stories I have been told suggest Ronald had no interest in the youngsters, didn’t talk to them and certainly had no intention of playing them.

Add to that his rigid tactical structure, his weird decisions - Yoshida at right back kept failing, kept happening, and persisting with Pelle in spite of poor form and tiredness - are just two of many examples. For a while I thought Koeman was going to be my favourite Southampton manager. Sadly, he’s now dropped down to the Branfoot category of former managers. (Sorry Mr T no one not even Woy Hodgeson can drop that far.

Okay bad example. Branfoot might actually be better than “I don’t know why I’m here?” Woy. Ed)

WHAT NEXT… There is certainly an interesting season ahead.

There are ten clubs starting this season’s with aspirations of a top 4 Champions League finish.

Five of those clubs with new managers, including us. And surely, one big name manager is going to flop, fail and flee either voluntarily or via the sack. Last season it was Mourinho but this season who will it be? Klopp and Koeman are top of my list.

But hopefully, fingers crossed, don’t tempt fate, not Claude Puel. We lead off with another manager new to the Premiership plus we start the season having lost two players who gave us 44 goals over the last two seasons. The goals may be hard to replace but I am sure we won’t miss Wanyama’s collection of red cards anywhere near as much. Tactically, we look set to start the season with either the classic diamond shape or a 43-3. With no Pelle or like styled replacement a false number 9 seems to be the way we will go.

Could be Long or Redmond but I hope we can expect a more fluid pressing team this season.

And after a few seasons of players not resigning contracts it’s a great relief seeing players signing new long term contracts. It’s a great vote of confidence in the club and a great boost for the fans, as it really is time we had a group of players who really want to be at the club, ‘A La Fonte’ Style.

It is said Saints players - like the titanic shouldn’t leave Southampton. Ricky lambert, Lovren, Shaw, Chambers, Morgan etc… have not fared well since leaving the club. One player though, Nathaniel Clyne, seemed to be doing just fine. Regular for Liverpool, called up for England … it now seems the curse has struck. He has contacted the police, claiming his reputation is being smeared by the revelation of an online tape of some - not meant for general consumption - off field performances. Apparently filmed while he was single lad at Southampton it is only since leaving somebody decided to embarrass our former star. Should’ve stayed!

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR IN 16 / 17 If I am wary of anything, it’s the fact that we now have to do the new manager/replace key players media thing for the third season in a row.

Two years ago they had us destined for meltdown and relegation. Now though we all expect to just carry on from where we left off. But even newly promoted Middlesbrough have bought nearly a whole new team there is so much money about and as a long-time fan you always fear the worst.

On the plus side I hope to see an explosion of younger players breaking into the first team arena. Harrison Reed will want to put the last two years behind him and I think he could be the surprise breakthrough player of the year. But he won’t be alone. Our youngsters careers have stood still for two years and they will be bursting to make a point. Plus, Charlie Austin and Jay Rodriquez have careers to get back on course too.

THE KIT Ah yes, the kit. I can’t really say I am a big fan of the new design, especially when my daughter showed me a picture of somebody wearing an old Saints shirt with a white bra over it which bore more than a striking resemblance to our new design. Still it could be worse. Go and check out the new Norwich 3rd Kit which looks like you need 3D glasses to see what it really looks like. And anyway why does any team need a third kit?

LES REED Finally, a big word of thanks to the cool and unassuming Les Reed. Once voted in an on-line poll, “The worst manager of all time” he has throughout all the turmoil of the last few years, following the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, been a rock for us. Having lost 2 Premiership managers and a full team of players, which would kill off most clubs, we seem to thrive. “Thanks Les.” (“AND so say all of us!” Ed)

Oh and apparently I’ve also got to wish Hedge End Rangers ‘Good luck’. Which of course I do.
