Bit special this issue. We’re getting carried away and sponsoring stuff! It’s in Mettricks new Bargate cafe . I’m a bit concerned for the bloke that’s been asked to present a showcase there on Sunday 25th October (4-6pm) though. I reckon he’s vastly unprepared. In fact his wife continues to ask the question ‘why do you get yourself into these situations, when you don’t know what you’re doing?”. She has a point to be fair. But Nobody (Well not many) expected The AND Guide to now be galloping towards the end of its second year and it is. Like a runaway train Barry Upton calls it!

Talking about being vastly unprepared I had said last issue that I’d do my editors bit ... this bit, before I’d been up all night trying to squeeze the latest technology out of my wood burning mac.

But ... I’ve failed. Again.

So much so that I haven’t even got time to do much rambling at all. (Hurrah! I hear a chorus) Not even got time to chuck my spilling!

But I do hope you enjoy the issue. I reckon its a cracker. What do you reckon to the friont cover? I think I’d had too much coffee personally, but I quite like whatever it was I was trying to achieve.

I had to put this picture in, particularly this issue promoting Southampton’s first festival of words. Henry Blowfeld is a huge hero of mine, as he is to all fans of Test Match Special with his splendid descriptions of buses, seagulls, hats and er... cricket. I was so thrilled to be introduced to him at the recent England game at The Ageas Bowl. Thank you Stephanie Houghton, it absolutely made my day ... well, more than that to be fair. I will wear my sporting nickname with pride for ever more!

I told you the dear old government was reveiwing its green power incentives and Solar Power likely to be top of its hit list. Well it was and it has. Yes its still possible to benefit from favourable Solar Power deals but for ther next couple of months only. January 1st is for all intensive purposes likely to be the end. So if you’re intersted (and who wouldn’t be?) DO IT NOW! Right now.

I’ve badgered my good friend and solar energy expert Paul Hambridge of LED Energy Management to come back with a special deal which you can see alongside. So call him now before tinsel and mulled wine get the better of you.

Is the Government’s change of direction a good idea? I can’t see it myself. But then again I don’t see how a fraudulent MP is making a mistake while you and I would be criminals?

But I’ll let you be the judge. Check out the fuss that’s been caused with the revelations. Heres’ some background and response.

SOLAR ENERGY CARROT TO END The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is proposing to cut the feed-in tariff rates for solar PV installations by as much as 87%.

In addition to the swingeing cuts to the tariff rate, DECC is also looking to enforce default degression each quarter which would see FiT support for some scales of solar end on 1 January 2019.

DECC will still implement a contingent degression mechanism that could degress tariff rates by a further 10% depending on deployment.

DECC is also proposing to change the indexation of the feed-in tariff scheme, moving it away from retail price index (RPI) to consumer price index (CPI). The department argues that CPI is a more appropriate way of compensating investors for inflation.

The government has also noted a number of concerns about the structure of the export tariff under the FiT, most notably the gap between the export tariff and market prices for FiT installations. DECC has outlined a number of proposed changes such as removing the export tariff for >50kW projects, lowering the export tariff and annually reviewing the export tariff. However, it does not intend to make any changes to the export tariff yet and is seeking feedback on its proposals first.

The government’s accompanying Impact Assessment document admits that the proposed changes to the feed-in tariff rates would wipe 6GW off UK renewable generation capacity by 2020/21. DECC states: “There is a risk that these changes – combined with the separate consultation proposals to remove preaccreditation – may result in significantly reduced rates of deployment...However, industry has proven resilient to previous significant changes to FITs, and has been able to adapt to previous tariff reductions and the introduction of degression. The risk of reduced deployment has to be seen in the context of this and of the need to have more robust controls on spend to

enable the FiTs scheme to continue. More broadly, it should be seen in the light of most of the technologies in the scheme having already deployed more now than had been expected by 2020.”

FORMER ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE SECRETARY SAYS CHANGES ARE “BONKERS” The economics behind George Osborne’s decision to make cuts to a series of green policies are “bonkers”, former energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey has told the Guardian.

In his first interview since losing his seat at the election, Davey said he struggled to comprehend the logic behind cuts to energy efficiency programmes and renewable energy incentives.

“What is frightening is that, despite all that success in low-carbon energy infrastructure, [Osborne] is prepared to send those disastrous signals. It was bad enough in the coalition when they were sending mixed signals but now there is no 'mixed' about it,” he told the paper.

“This is another thing I don’t get about Osborne’s economics," he said. "They are really bonkers. The vast majority of this investment is private sector. Compare that with roads or railways or flood defences where it’s always the taxpayer.

“We battled every day. There were some Conservatives who were supportive like Greg Barker and Charles Hendry but they were a minority and the push was against the green agenda,” he added.

Since the majority Conservative government came to power cuts have been made to largescale solar support and onshore wind incentives, the Green Deal has been scrapped and the Zero Carbon Homes policy severely hamstrung. Proposals to slash the feed-in tariff for solar by 87% have been described as "unnecessary, unjustifiable, unmanageable and ultimately destructive”.

How to avoid a cash flow crisis this Christmas Christmas is well on its way and now we have a 2 year old daughter, I’m looking forward to it even more than ever!

However, whilst I’ll be taking some time off to enjoy the festivities with my family, it’s a really busy time for me as a solicitor and there’s no doubt I’ll be putting some extra hours in at the office.

Traditionally one of the busiest shopping periods of the year, Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for many business owners.

This is because busy doesn’t necessarily mean profitable and this can cause an increased strain on cash flow that takes months to recover from. In some cases it can be the final straw that forces them to close in the New Year!

However, the good news is, it doesn’t have to be this way.

With a little thought and forward planning, you can avoid creating a cash flow crisis this Christmas.

The first thing to do is look at your strategy for sales promotions.

Next, let’s look at late payments.

Late payments aren’t usually a problem for retail businesses but for service providers, they can be even more of a problem at Christmas. This is because it provides clients with a convenient excuse for delaying payments even further.

How many times have you heard the excuse “Sorry, the person who authorises payments is away on holiday at the moment”?

It happens all the time so you need to be prepared for it.

If you hear this excuse, you first need to establish how long they’re going to be away. If it’s just a shortterm absence, you can clarify that there are no other issues preventing payment from being made and that payment will be made as soon as they return.

No business should be left without someone in complete control for very long. So, if the person responsible for making the payment is going to be away for any longer than a week, someone else should be available to deal with this in their absence.

If they cannot physically make the payment, they should at least be able to make a commitment to the

So why might you want to hold a sale?

If you’re a retail business, you might want to clear out old stock to make way for the new. This is a good reason to offer a discount because old stock takes up valuable space. If it’s out of season or if fashions are likely to change for next season, you don’t want to hang on to this stock because it represents cash that is tied up and cannot be used for other things.

However, if your products are not seasonal or not likely to go out of fashion, think carefully before discounting them, or discounting them too much.

Cutting margins too far or even selling at a loss just to generate turnover and entice customers through the door could lead to longer-term problems and by adopting this strategy, you may find you have to work even harder during the rest of the year just to make up the shortfall.

New Monthly Jazz Club comes to Hampshire A new monthly Jazz club is heading to Sarisbury Green Community Centre from November 2015, bringing some of the country’s best JazzMusicians to the heart of Hampshire.

Each month Jazz on the Green will see a live band grace the stage for two hours of Traditional Jazz and Swing music.

The venue boasts a licenced bar available throughout the evening, along with seating at tables and space permitting - a dance floor at the rear of the hall.

Each month will also see a raffle in the interval.

Founded by local Jazz enthusiast Barry Quantrill, Jazz on the Green is a nonprofit making venture which aims to bring a new style of jazz club to the South Coast, with the highest quality bands available playing, covered and dressed tables and limited ticket numbers to ensure the whole audience enjoys their evening. Rod Stewart has announced an eight date UK stadium tour which will include a concert at Southampton’s Ageas Bowl, on Friday June 10.

The news comes after his triumphant Hyde Park Radio 2 show where he played to more than 50,000 people, and is on the eve of releasing a brand new studio album ’Another Country’, Rod Bransgrove, Hampshire Cricket Chairman, said: “We are delighted to be able to add Rod Stewart to the string of great artists who have performed here at the Ageas Bowl.

In this day and age there are many ways to access and listen to music but nothing compares with the excitement, enjoyment, energy and endearing realism of live music. New Orleans jazz musician Chris Edmunds once quoted 'you can't download a live musical experience' and he would surely be impressed at the quality and variation of upcoming attractions in the local region over the next two months.

The big guns are out at the Guildhall in Southampton with luminaries such as the fiery Bullet for my Valentine, reformed 24 hour party people The Happy Mondays (who recently appeared on reality TV show ‘Singing in the Rainforest’), Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls and the iconic Mr Bob Dylan all treading the boards.

THE 1865 hosts the compelling Panic Room, Mercury Prize nominated Ghostpoet and proto-punk RnB rockers Dr Feelgood, whilst the STAGE DOOR stages the theatrical vocal talents of Kerry Ellis and Velma Celli and over at Southampton’s ‘metal central’ THE FIREHOUSE there appears to be a best band name competition going on with both Dethonator and Evil Scarecrow amongst the front runners.

THE CONCORDE in Eastleigh’s focal points include one-time tartan teen sensations The Bay City Rollers, USA soul troupers The Stylistics, Shoreham’s finest Leo Sayer (plugging his recent album Restless Years) and award winning singer-songwriter Lemar. There is also a healthy smattering of Jazz (Savannah Jazz Band, Sussex Jazz Kings, and Digby Fairweather's Dirty Dozen) and tribute acts (Eagles, George Michael, Whitney Huston, Blondie and Frank Sinatra) on show.

Over at Winchesters premier venue THE RAILWAY there is a contrasting collection of enchantments including ground-breaking dub bassman Jah Wobble (who was once a member of the aforementioned Public Image Ltd) with his invaders of the heart, folk rock two piece The Rails (featuring Kami Thomson and Pogues touring guitarist James Walborne),old school metallers Wolfsbane, one time Alarm guitarist and all round nice guy Dave Sharp (who once had the dubious honour of being interviewed/interrogated by the Davis Brothers for And Magazine a few years ago!), the soulful Simi Stone and Ruam Joseph, who has been referred to by Paulo Nutini as a 'Modern Cat Stevens'.

Finally, saving the best to last, you can witness the boss doing what he does best with some marvellous musical virtuosity courtesy of his band the aformentioned PS_Perrystone Hill at ARTY’S AT THE COACH HOUSE in Gosport [You are clearly creeping now Mr Davis! Still getting a P45] Oh... anyway ... further afield at THE POISON APPLE in Bournemouth my band Thinker will be causing mayhem. It would be great to see you at either of those gigs if you can come along.

It’s frustrating that I (Ed) keep coming across people who after nearly 2 years of flooding the area are only just discovering The AND Guide.

But we’re young, its to be expected sadly. But I must say I was shocked when a friend of mine and music lover, told me he’d never been to The Brook? What?! It’s like living in Delhi and not visiting the Taj Mahal. He got a short response and a good measure of heckling I can tell you. I just couldn’t beleive it.

Festival of Remembrance 1 NOVEMBER 2015

This special event commemorates and honours all those who have lost their lives in conflicts, and is both a moving and enjoyable evening.

SAMANTHA FISH

This years event is booked for the 1st November 7pm till 10pm in the presence of Her Serene Highness Princess Sophie Von Hohenberg, great granddaughter of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Countess Sophia who were assassinated at the beginning of WW1.

HSH will be giving a reading. The Lord Lieutenant will also be in attendance with BBC's Sally Taylor the compere for the evening.

Confirmed bands include The Rifles, Queen Division, and Adjutant General Corps Band plus a 150 chorus from the Southampton Philharmonic and Southampton University Philharmonic Choir.

There will be an Act of Remembrance with poppy petals falling similar to that at the Royal Albert Hall. All money raised will go to the Poppy Appeal.

‘THEY'RE GOING TO PUT ME IN THE MOVIES' Summer had some memorable moments and one of them was the New Forest Folk Festival and now mid Autumn Ratty and Mole find themselves part of a movie in the making. Well Mole wasn't actually featured but her handiwork was. First things first, a visit to the New Forest Folk Festival out Plaitford way one afternoon in August.

When most of summer seems to littered with jam packed festivals, it was a delight to find a festival you could breathe in.

Ratty pushed the boat out bought Mole a beer and then a henna fairy tattoo from long time friend Donna McGhee's face painting ad powertex stall. The music that afternoon was lazy and summery. “Perfict,” said Mole looking down at her tattoo, sipping her beer.

The following day Ratty was working supporting a young disabled man in a wheelchair who loves music. What better way to spend some of his day but a friendly well organised music festival. He has warm memories of an artist saying goodbye as he left the stage after his last song and a fridge magnet souvenir to remind him of his time there.

Debbie who put on his wrist band, organisers Nick and Keith Curtis, the ice cream lady, made him welcome, made him smile.

That meant a lot to him and to me. Thankyou.

DEAD FRED THE MOVIE . . .

And now cut to a sleepy nook in Hampshire and how Ratty and Mole ended up in a movie. Some while back Ratty announced to Mole he was going to play the part of a dead man found amongst the fish fingers in a freezer. Mole couldn't stop laughing and wondered if Ratty was having her on.

Thence as autumn came around Ratty joined a crew and cast of sixteen on the set of Dead Fred a 90 minute movie directed and produced by friends Deanna and Terry

The actors were national names, the crew, make up, wardrobe, camera folks all sourced from Hampshire including Southampton media and make up courses.

Ratty spent over four hours in make up, completed by young Amelia from Southampton's Solent University who considered him the canvas on which to paint a frozen scene consisting of face paints, latex and salt. For a final scene Amelia applied the shotgun wound to Ratty's back.

After the filming Ratty went and knocked on Mole's door late that night and her first words were “You look awful,” and poured him a beer.

That weekend Ratty and Mole returned to the film set. Ratty was needed to reshoot a simple scene with Sandra Dickinson in which she would extract shotgun pellets into a bowl from Ratty's back. Mole volunteered to weld the knife, the monkey.

So wrapped up in the idea of a movie Mole was soon in the swing of things welding a knife to make a sandwich for a scene being shot in the garden that afternoon. If you perchance see the movie look out for said sandwich and the frozen chap hauled out of the freezer.

Dead Fred the movie is planned for release in the spring of 2016.

Initially a front singer with Brotherhood Of Man he’s worked with a multitude of household names including being creator of the lovable pop outfit STEPS, penning their massive hit 5678 and his mate and editor of this ‘ere paper previously co-hosting the AND Magazine Show on Radio Hampshire. He’s currently a TV & radio presenter and producer in Thailand and of course he’s still performing!

your axe, it’s a babe magnet Forget after shave, flowers, expensive dinners, a night out at the theatre. Any fully fledged riffer will tell you, the guitar is a female magnet. For the last 50 years, the best male accessory for luring a women into his life, world or even boudoir, has been the electric guitar.

Armed with a phallicly shaped, highly strung piece of wood accross your body, with your fingers running up and down a fretboard while showing emotional dedication to the artful manipulation of your chosen one, is the fast lane to a girl's heart. Drummers don’t do badly either. Must be the energy they exert that gets the chicks salivating. Strange thing is that girls actually look sexy playing guitars as well. (Er, where are you going with this Bazza? Ed) PAUSE But as this apparently is a music industry toolkit column ... yep that's what Martin told me ... back on track with the music industry toolkit stuff! (Thank you. Ed) So...

WHAT guitar should you be playing? To help why don't I also tell you what some of the stars use?

Might even drop in a line or two about drummers. [ER... why? Ed] Because it's a music industry column and I promise not to say anything else about women. [Okay. Ed) Electric guitars come in many different shapes and designs but the big three are the Fender Stratocaster, the Gibson Les Paul and the Fender Telecaster.

The Gibson Les Paul is a solid body electric guitar originally developed in the early 1950s. The Les Paul was designed by Ted McCarty in collaboration with popular 50s guitarist Les Paul, whom Gibson enlisted to endorse the new model.

Les Paul was a respected innovator who had been experimenting with guitar design for years to ben-

efit his own music. In fact, he had hand-built a solid-body prototype called "The Log". A design widely considered the first solid-body Spanish guitar ever built, as opposed to the "Hawaiian", or lapsteel guitar. His guitar is known as "The Log" because the solid core is a pine block whose width and depth are a little more than the width of the fretboard. In 1951, it was agreed that the new Les Paul guitar was to be an expensive, well-made instrument in Gibson's tradition.

The Les Paul guitar line was originally conceived to include two models, the regular model (nicknamed the Goldtop), and the Custom model, which offered upgraded hardware and a more formal black finish. However, advancements in pickup, body, and hardware designs allowed the Les Paul to become a long-term series of electric solid-body guitars that targeted every price-point and market level.

Exponents of the classic Les Paul guitar include Jimmy Page, Slash, Gary Moore, John Fogerty, Frank Zappa, Bob Marley, Peter Frampton ... and myself.

The Fender Telecaster, colloquially known as the Tele, is typically a dual-pickup, solid-body electric guitar made by Fender. Its simple yet effective design and revolutionary sound, broke ground and set trends in electric guitar manufacturing, influencing popular music.

It’s known for its ability to produce both bright, rich, cutting tones or mellow, warm, bluesy ones depending on the selected pickup, respectively "bridge" pickup or "neck" pickup.

The Telecaster was important in the evolution of country, electric blues, funk, rock and roll and other forms of popular music, because its solid construction allowed the guitar to be played loudly as a lead instrument, with long sustain if desired, and with less of the whistling 'hard' feedback that hollow bodied instruments tended to produce at volume.

Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones has composed many classic riffs on his battered "Micawber" Tele although up against himself, it looks smooth and untouched.

With endurance to match that of his guitar, Bruce Springsteen has given many energetic performances with his Fender Esquire Strat.

Iconic Tele’s are also the wornoff green and respectively white Telecasters of the two frontmen of Status Quo, Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt.

George Harrison used a custombuilt rosewood Telecaster during the recording sessions for The Beatles' Let It Be album (including the famous rooftop concert).

Of all my guitars, my personal favourite is my American made sunburst Fender Telecaster and it’s the one that I played for my contribution to ‘great guitar riffs of our time’, namely the riff on ‘5,6,7,8’. (no wonder I love it).

The baritone guitar is a variation on the standard guitar, with a longer scale length that allows it to be tuned to a lower range. The Danelectro Company was the first to introduce the electric baritone guitar in the late 1950s but it was not originally popular with players or listeners. However, the instrument began to appear in surf music, as well as background music for many movie soundtracks, especially spaghetti westerns.

Some baritones may also have the capacity to be used as a bass guitar if strung correctly.

Baritone guitars have larger bodies than standard guitars, especially in the case of acoustic instruments, and have longer scale lengths which allow the strings to be tuned lower while remaining close to or at normal tension.

Brian Wilson often included baritone guitars in his arrangements for The Beach Boys records, such as in "Dance, Dance, Dance" or "Caroline, No".

Other examples of the unique sound are from Duane Eddy’s early hits, on many of Glen Campbells records including ‘Witchita Lineman’ and the theme song from the TV series ‘Twin Peaks’.

A friend of mine, original ‘Shadows’ member, now the late Jet Harris MBE, introduced me to this instrument which he used on some of his early 60s recordings.

With its extreme ‘twang’ and unusual low but clear tone, it’s sound is unmistakable.

All guitarists will have their favourite kind of guitar but for me, you cannot beat a good Strat, Tele or Les Paul to win a ladies hand of an evening. Nuff said. ENJOY. [PS... you did it again!. Ed]

Welcome to The AND Guide’s travel page. Each issue I attempt to bring you news, features and travel guides to the latest hot (and cold) spots around the world. I’ve been a travel nut for years now and I love talking about holidays. My job is to spend time creating perfect holidays for clients. I’m open to suggestions so if you want to find out more about somewhere let me know and I’ll try to make it a feature. But for now its snow!

So the kids have gone back to school, X-Factor and Strictly have returned for our Saturday night TV viewing pleasure and the nights are growing in, there’s only one thing for it … it’s time to book a ski holiday!!

FAMILY FRIENDLY SLOPES OF ALPE D'HUEZ (COULDN’T FIND A PIC OF ANY CHAPS IN SPEEDOS) Now, skiing is not everyone’s thing but I am a self-confessed snow junkie – I even met my husband on the slopes so talking about skiing is one of my favourite things! I think what I love most is it’s completely different to anything you do in your normal day-to-day life. I mean putting on uncomfortable boots and attaching two long planks of wood (or one long board if that’s your thing!) to said boots and then hurling yourself down a massive hill, oh and then repeating that about 10 times until you can’t stand up anymore ...hey what’s not to love! Due to cost it used to be the domain of fashionable elite, but now, thanks to the wide variety of ski companies it’s much more affordable to the rest of us.

But where to start with such a huge topic? Well, I thought I’d give my top tips on choosing the right holiday for you, starting with what about how easy it is to get there.

Nowadays quite a few companies fly from Southampton to Chambery in France, Geneva in Switzerland and Innsbruck in Austria. And from those airports the ski areas you can transfer to are endless. Flying from Southampton makes a huge difference to the overall trip as more often than not the transfer from airport to mountain can be up to 3 hours depending on how high up you’re going. But don’t let that put you off as there are many resorts that are around 1 ? hours transfer so that’s a bit more doable!!

When choosing a resort it helps to have a think about a few things: what level skiing/boarding you’re looking for, who is travelling and what everyone wants from their holiday? I’ve been a few times now and with different sets of people; from my girlfriends (that’s when I met my hubby!), to my family including my 60 year old parents and then my own little family

AND a little shout out for India (Ed) I recently popped over to India for a week - as you do - all I can say is put it on your bucket list. There simply is nowhere like the place. It’s totally nuts.

The best way to sum it up is a spectacular rubbish tip. The people are lovely. As long as you are brutal with your bartering mind, they call it cheating. Seriously.

The traffic is a just a moving roadblock.

Somehow it works. Despite the most

ridiculous wildlife being carried 5 abreast on a pushbike across the alleged fastlane of a motorway. And all the time NOISE. Serious head crunching NOISE! There are just too many people in India, not enough tigers and way, way too much rubbish. No offence to any of my many Indian friends but what ever system the country is employing to keep the place nice. Make that the first thing you bin because it isn’t working.

But I really do urge you to go. I went with good friends Geoff and Giuliette,

when my son was only 2! Lots of resorts offer great après ski action such as Val D’Isere in France, Pas de la Casa in Andorra and Verbier in Switzerland, with plenty of pubs and bars offering to ease your aches and pains with copious amounts of gluhwein!!

If you’re looking for a great family resort, it’s best to see what there is on offer off the slopes too as little ones can only handle so much slope time. I’d recommend Alpe D’Huez as the slopes are set right behind the town so lots of ski-in and skiout accommodation and there’s lots going on in the town including a large communal pool – however a word of warning apparently men HAVE to wear Speedo’s to swim in it! The other resort I would recommend is Alpbach in Austria, this pretty little village in the Tirol mountain range is compact and has some lovely sunny nursery slopes for the little beginners.

It also has an ice rink and communal swimming pool for some fun off the slopes.

For serious skiers and boarders who are looking for height and great off-piste actions there’s lots of great resorts and one I’d recommend is St Anton in Austria; catch the cable car above the main area and from here a five-man gondola carries you the last few hundred metres to expert-only terrain and the notorious Valluga Nord off-the-back descent to Zurs. (This all sounds scary to me but my “expert” hubby assures me it’s awesome!)

The other thing to consider when looking for the perfect ski holiday is the type of accommodation you’re after. Some people like the flexibility of self-catering which is usually the cheapest option from a booking perspective but depending on resort it can be very expensive to eat out; Switzerland and

originally to watch cricket for Geoff’s birthday. Unfortunately they moved the match! So the closest we got was to pose outside the gates. But I am so glad we went. The trip was awesome. Saw the Taj Mahal ... and yep it is stunning.

Peculiarly and pleasantly uncommercialised. To be fair we’d have ruined it.

Visited Mumbai and Delhi, avoided the tummy, but finding a top restaurant was even harder than finding a seat on a train ... which we didn’t manage btw.

AND the Delhi market should go down as

one of the wonders of the world. Good grief! Youtube it now! We just loved it.

For a couple of hours anyway. Got ourselves a lovely guide, a one legged bloke we couldn't escape from (I told you it was crazy) but fortunately him and his crutch turned out to be a top team and helped us through most of the sites ... and the cheating.

A word too for our Hotels I recommend them both. And a major tip is to get a good hotel. We usually go cheap using it simply as B&B. Boy am I glad

Norway in particular. The other options are half board hotels, where you get breakfast and dinner included, or my favourite: the catered chalet. Going for this option is great especially with kids as you are in smaller accommodation so perhaps lodges holding between 8-16 people and you have a chalet host at your beck and call! They make you a hearty breakfast, put on a splendid afternoon tea for the well-deserved postslope sugar rush and then cook a 4-course dinner where wine is generally free flowing! The chalet host usually has one day off in the week which allows you to go out and enjoy one of the many restaurants the resort has to offer.

So there you are, choosing a ski holiday in a nut-shell! But seriously if you are thinking of planning your ski holiday for 2016 now is a great time to do it. (AND no ... I have nothing to do with the pictures!)

THE AND GUIDE: You've been playing the working musician in blues for over 30 years now. Did you ever have a full-time job apart from being a musician ?

one in particular, but like all musicians, I have been influenced and inspired by others. As regards my playing on electric guitar that means the Blues greats such as B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Magic Sam and T-Bone Walker.

But my biggest influence, instrumentally and vocally, is definitely Otis Rush. He was a big influence on Clapton and Peter Green also. He unfortunately had a stroke about ten years ago and no longer performs, but when he was on form in my opinion there was no one to touch him. The feeling and intensity of some of his live recordings is just awesome! Among contemporary players I really rate Jimmie Vaughan, Anson Funderburgh, Junior Watson and Alex Schultz, all very tasteful Blues (as opposed to Blues-Rock) guitarists.So my playing style is an amalgam of all these influences, but I hope is recognisably my own.

Can I just add though that lead guitar playing is only one facet of what I try to do. For me, rhythm guitar is just as important. It's a very underrated skill these days, but I think that being a sympathetic accompanist, knowing how to listen to and interact with the other musicians in the band and how to support the singer are essential elements of being a wellrounded band guitarist. To be honest I have always thought of myself as a singer who plays guitar rather than a guitarist who also happens to sing.

I know our editor, Martin, will understand where you're coming from .. he plays regularly with a virtuoso guitarist alongside him!

Your appearances range from more intimate duos and trios right up to the fullblown All Stars line-up with horns which really allows you to flex your blues muscles and presumably to play a more varied range of material. Is there any form of the genre you prefer playing over others ?

I love having the variety which the different lineups. The R&B All Stars is a great band to play in, with some excellent musicians. Paul Tasker for me is one of the best sax players around, with wonderful technique and feel, and of course keyboard players don't come much better than Ray Drury. I feel very privileged that these guys want to be in my band!

At the moment though I must admit I am getting a lot of fun and satisfaction from playing with my trio, which features myself on acoustic guitar and vocals, Jeradine Hume on vocals and percussion and Jon Vaughan on

We are all very different in our backgrounds and influences, Jeradine and Jon are both much younger than me, but the three elements just blend so well together to make a very tight unit that is a joy to play in. One of the things I really enjoy in the trio is the fact that Jeradine's voice and mine work so well together, and we do a lot of two-part harmonies, which is great fun! Jon's harmonica playing is exceptional with great Blues tone and phrasing, and I'm really enjoying playing the pre-war Blues and Ragtime guitar styles.

It certainly shows on your face, believe me !

Jeradine adds a different dimension to the sound of the band and lends it a more jazztinged flavour, especially given her retro image. How did she come to be in the group ? Did you discover her yourself ?

Yes, you could say I "discovered" Jeradine!

For many years my band has been playing gigs at the Wheatsheaf in Shedfield, where Jeradine used to work as barmaid. We were chatting after a gig there a couple of years ago when she happened to mention she had just graduated from Southampton Solent with a performing arts degree, which included an element of singing, along with acting and dancing. I suggested she might like to sit in with the band sometime. She was very reluctant at first, as she had never sung with a band before, and needed a lot of cajoling and encouragement, but was eventually persuaded and made her debut at the Wheatsheaf on New Year's Eve 2013 with two songs. She was very nervous, but I could see there was a lot of potential there and invited her to sit in on a couple more gigs. Each time she grew in confidence and it wasn't long before I asked her if she would like to join the band. Over the past two years she has developed immensely as a singer and performer and adds greatly to the band's image and impact with her soulful vocals and glamorous retro image. She also has a great sense of rhythm and has become an excellent (self-taught!) washboard player in the trio. Jeradine is a young lady of many talents who now wishes to make singing her career. I am delighted and very proud of the progress she has made in such a short time and I believe that with the right breaks she could go far!

I really like that you take time out between songs to talk about the music. Do you feel it's your duty as a bluesman to keep the music alive or do you feel like it'll live on anyway ?

I do think it's important to give a little bit of background to the songs, especially when performing to a "non-Blues" public. It's all part of engaging with the audience, which in my opinion is such an important part of a per-

formance. Blues will always live on in some form; it is after all the mother of Jazz and Rock. For me, being a Blues musician has always been an extension of being a fan. If in some small way I can pass on my love and enthusiasm for this great music and help to inspire others to listen to it and/or perform it then I'm well pleased!

Which brings us nicely to our last question - do you have any tips for budding blues singers and musicians ?

Yes, I would encourage them to go back and discover the original black Blues artists the roots go much deeper than Stevie Ray Vaughan, great guitarist though he was. I was fortunate to see live such great Bluesmen as John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Mississippi Fred McDowell, J. B. Lenoir, Junior Wells, etc. most of them dead now, of course, but there is so much great Blues available on Youtube. Anyone who wants to discover real Blues music nowadays has an almost limitless library of resources to draw from on the internet, way beyond the wildest dreams of the Blues fans of my youth, when the arrival of a new Blues LP at the local record store was an event! I would also encourage them to get out to gigs and jam sessions. We have some fine musicians in this area. Go and watch them and learn from them at gigs and interact with them at jam sessions. It's a great way to improve and develop.

There must be something in the water down south because ever since The AND Guide's launch we've been regularly reviewing folk-rock artists and Mikey Ball is the latest to come to our attention.

With a jangly, upbeat take on the genre and a cracking set of pipes on him, Mikey is relentlessly cheerful, hellbent on putting the fun back into folk. His signature sound is actually a cunning blend of Americana, rock and folk and the latest album, Castaway, showcases both that voice and his impressive song-writing talents.

From the opening rocker, Common Ground, the minialbum takes you on a journey through the heavier, electricguitar led Runaway, the Celtic-tinged Castaway, and the acoustic ballad Leaving In Her Eyes, before returning to a more mainstream number in Our Lives - which evoked Bryan Adams' Summer Of 69 and finally the closing Rain, a riffy sign-off to a strong collection of songs.

There's more than a little Frank Turner in this release and for that reason alone I think Mikey Ball will be a name we'll be hearing more of, but he's also got his own voice and - most importantly something to say.

If you went to the Voice FM bandstand event in Palmerston Park during the

summer, you would have seen them tearing things up on the acoustic front with their rockin' singer/guitar sets.

Their first official video was also released on YouTube in September - search for "Kinesis 4 Come With Me" to check it out, with lead singer, Okpar, looking all mean and moody, hair blowing in the wind, on what appears to be the site of the old TVS studios, various rocky beaches and a grafitti-riddled industrial estate. Actually, Christmas is a very busy time for Delicious Sounds as Fiona explains : “In this country there is an astonishingly rich tradition of carols and folk songs which herald the turning of the year.

Delicious Sounds Choir do sing the occasional traditional carol. However, we like to mainly breathe life into songs from all around the world and from a variety of ancient and modern sources. As a Community Choir our emphasis is on experiencing the joy that singing with other people can bring, in a relaxed, informal and fun environment.

Many people associate singing with competitions such as the X Factor... at Delicious Sounds Choir our emphasis is on creating harmony with others.

We are anchored firmly into the fabric of Southampton, and really enjoy taking our songs out into city, performing at lots of different events.”

These include Southampton Art Gallery on Saturday 19th December at 1pm and The Hanger Farm Arts Centre on Sunday 20th December at 4pm.

1976, a very good year Not being a sports fan, I don’t refer to the match which was the reason for many of my colleagues at Plessey, Titchfield, losing their voices, nope, I mean the record breaking summer, the drought of 76.

My then girlfriend and I spent two weeks camping in Cornwall, we took her 650cc BSA because it had a more friendly saddle than mine and panniers could be attached.

The holiday was perfect, no waterproofs needed to be packed and my leather jacket was never worn, I just lived in a t-shirt and denim cut off.

I try not to recall that the camp site we used had no showers or toilets, campers climbed over the wall to the public toilets and personal washing was a pan of hot water in the tent, but it was alright, the prevailing scent of ‘Brute’ and ‘Charlie’ perfume covered so much. Euch!

One day we rode over to Looe where we saw an Ariel two stroke twin with another cylinder grafted on the side making it a unique, and skilfully engineered, triple.

I was puzzled by the tatty gifts bearing the image of some chap giving the thumbs up and saying “cool”, I didn’t watch a lot of TV so I that was my introduction to the

Fonze (Henry Winkler) one of the main stars of ‘Happy Days’.

Printed images on mirrors had just become popular and, for some spirit of the seventies reason, I bought one with him sat on a Triumph TR5 wearing his trademark leather jacket.

One of his bikes is now expected to reach £100K at auction and one of his jackets could go for £30K, ‘Happy Days’ was that big a deal.

The TV series, set in the 50s and 60s, ran from 1974 to 1984 and came about (to my thinking) because of the iconic movie ‘American Graffiti’ which was released in ‘74, I saw it and still have the double album of the soundtrack.

Ron Howard was co-lead in the film and co-starred in the ‘Happy Days’ TV show, his girlfriend in the film, Cindy Williams, featured in the TV show and went on to the spin off ‘Laverne and Shirley’.

Fonzie was initially a bad but misunderstood chap with strong ethics and morals, his character eventually overshadowed the other actors and he appeared in both series.

The late, much lamented, Robin Williams first gained public awareness by appearing as the alien, Mork, in both shows.

Now, Fonzie wasn’t allowed to wear a leather jacket in the first series of ‘Happy Days’ because the garment gave the wrong image, it wasn’t nice, it portrayed an antisocial image so Winkler started out in a nylon jacket (yuk).

The producers got around that by having a bike in Fonzies’ scenes so he had to wear the protective leather jacket.

Anti-social? Wrong, thuggish, image?

That jacket wasn’t even what we regard as proper biker leather, it was brown, straight zipped and had a knitted waistline!

One of his jackets now resides in the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC as do the cocktail glasses from the TV version of MASH.

In Mash BJ Hunnicutt grows a rebellious (for the military) moustache and gets an Indian motorcycle which he rides out of shot in the final episode.

Actor, Tom Selleck, another well known ‘tache wearer appeared in Friends along with Courtney Cox, who acted in the movie, Scream, as did Winkler.

Selleck was the first choice for Indiana Jones, who wore a leather jacket which was included in many publicity shots because the leather, unlike Fonzies, was seen as a strong and positive aspect of the hero – how opinions change.

We now see biker jackets as a never ending fashion item as were and will be again, Engineer boots which Fonz also wore.

Harrison Ford took that hero to world record levels, in the last film he acquired an unknown son who rode a Harley and wore an honest-to-goodness biker leather – think Brando in ‘The Wild One’ style, the film that was seen as a threat to society.

The pre-stardom Harrison Ford had a bit part in ‘American Graffiti’ and before ‘Star Wars’ he acted alongside Henry Winkler in the movie ‘Heroes’.

Fonzie's view of equal rights and other social issues mirrored the actors own interests, in one episode the Fonz learnt sign language to communicate with a deaf character, good for him in promoting something I’ve got great interest in as my wife is deaf.

Winkler, is dyslexic and appeared in a few episodes of ‘Sesame Street’ to engage youngsters in learning.

The thought that sparked this ramble off was that Fonzie originally rode a HarleyDavidson Knucklehead, not a Triumph, and didn’t in fact ride any of the bikes he was seen with as he wasn’t able to master bike riding.

The crew would push him into shot and the lighter Brit bike made that easier.

But Winkler was in good company, Suzi Quatro appeared with him as a stunt rider but wasn’t seen to actually ride, although she was allowed to wear leathers – I wonder why the producers thought that her being clad in leather was acceptable?

I once held a door open for Ms Quatro at Fleet Services, I recall she was wearing jeans, but I doubt she remembers me.

Harley-Davidson hosts wedding SINCE SOUTHAMPTON’s Harley-Davidson dealership opened I’ve been to many, varied, events.

The coldest would have to be the ‘We Don’t Do Winter’ party held, naturally, in the depth of winter.

Despite the sleet and freezing temperatures I rode my bike to prove I’m no fair weather biker, soon as I got there I bought fuel additive to stop my carb icing up. I should have taken the car, all I proved was that my jacket was far from waterproof and remind myself that road salt and water eats shiny metal.

There’s been numerous bike and custom shows, dealership parties, the ‘Bob’s Back Bash’, many, many, charity events and ride outs and even the launch of a local musician’s new single hosted at Soton H-D ... but only one wedding.

Craig and Ann-Marie decided to have their wedding blessed at the dealership and I have to say it was a lot more enjoyable than most weddings I’ve been to.

The End MC turned out in grand style to support the ceremony and they, family members, staff and casual visitors got into the spirit of the day.

Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Sobbrook, we wish them both a happy future.

So, who’s next to prefer a sea of bikes to some warm beach abroad as the backdrop to wedding pics?

THE MARTIAN Sci-fi epic from Ridley Scott, starring Matt Damon, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig and Jessica Chastain.

Ridley Scott knows sci-fi - Blade Runner, Alien, Prometheus Ridley Scott knows how to make a statement movie - Gladiator, Blackhawk Down, Exodus Ridley Scott knows a good story Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep ?, Hannibal, Child 44 He's also one of my favourite directors, while I'll happily watch Matt Damon in anything and have seen everything he's ever done.

I'm also a massive sci-fi fan.

To say I had high hopes for The Martian is an understatement.

All the ingredients were there: a strong story from an original novel, a great cast and director, the full backing of a major studio.

What could possibly go wrong?

The plot focuses on a six-strong manned mission to Mars and - unless you've been on the moon yourself - you'll probably know by now that something goes wrong, leaving botanist Mark Watney (Damon) stranded on the planet. With little in the way of resources and rapidly declining food stocks, he realises he'll have to "science the s**t" out of his situation if he's to stand any hope of surviving. That's all before he realises he can't actually get in touch with earth either.

So far, so Robinson Crusoe, right ?

Well, if anyone should get stranded on a desert island, sorry, planet, it's a botanist. At least he can grow stuff ... can't he ?

And that's about as far as I'm willing to go with the story because anything more will just spoil your enjoyment of the film.

Suffice to say it's a grim scenario and he was more accurate than he could possibly know when he described it to his video log. The movie switches between Watney recording his thoughts and theories for posterity, scenes of him actually doing "science" and what's happening back on earth and on the returning ship with the rest of the crew.

It's well-paced, allowing the story to unfold naturally while at the same time giving the audience chance to absorb

the jargon and physics involved, and gradually builds momentum over a surprising 141 minutes (it felt like much less) to a gripping denouement.

Visually, the movie is flawless. I've never seen the red planet depicted in such detail, with the soaring mountainscapes, the desolate dusty plains and the devastating storms all shown in glorious 3D that's a little too real at times.

With the wind howling and just a roll of gaffer tape for protection, Mars is a very lonely planet. And yet, something was missing.

I may be nitpicking, but this was a relentlessly upbeat saga.

There's some genuine laugh-out-loud moments from Watney when he's alone in particular, one which cleverly uses the planet's atmosphere to make the gag work - and yet there's not much in the way of gallows humour ... of Tom Hanks losing the plot and christening a football, say. In fact, I'd go so far to say as there's little in the way of any kind of psychological study of Watney or the crew members as they discover the fate of their friend and colleague.

Maybe it's just a British thing, but nobody could be that cheerful about a situation like that, could they ? Stiff upper lip, chaps. We'd be determined but we'd also be weeping into our potato tea every now and again, wouldn't we?

Another thing I found slightly odd was the casting of both Daniels and Wiig as senior NASA staff members. I kept expecting the former to make a fart gag and the latter to snort with laughter as he did so. I'm not sure if that says more about me or their abilities as actors to own a comedy role, to be honest.

The Martian is a work of art, despite my hypercritical observations above.

Matt Damon is the everyman allAmerican hero that you can't help rooting for and follows in a long, distinguished line of great screen actors from James Stewart and Henry Fonda, through Ed Harris and Hanks himself, right up to Damon, Ed Norton and Sam Rockwell in the modern era. I would be amazed if he isn't nominated for an oscar for this performance - you'll see why when you watch it - and had it not been for Tom Hardy's dual lead in Legend I would even expect him to win it. That, and the fact he already has one of course.

This is an epic picture and deserves to be seen on the big screen, 3D glasses or no. It's up to you, but see it at the cinema. Soon.

Welcome to Mars. Hollywood style.

LEGEND Starring Tom Hardy in dual lead roles, with Emily Browning, David Thewlis and Christopher Eccleston.

Gritty sixties biopic set in the back streets of east London Legend is a fantasy, let's get that straight from the off.

It plays extremely fast and loose with the truth, deifies two brutal and extremely psychopathic nutters who briefly rose to notoriety in the sixties and shamefacedly ignores large chunks of the real story, with no real explanation as to why the twins turned out the way they did.

It's set largely around the time Reggie met and eventually married Frances Shea and focuses on the impact that relationship had on the brothers themselves as well as their close-knit family, the "firm" and on Frances herself.

The movie is intermittently narrated by the hapless wife who desperately wants to settle down into some kind of normal life with Reggie, believing she can turn him into an honest businessman and move somewhere more

Film Reviews Paul Ridge movie starring the Kemp brothers was much closer to the truth : both Krays were bisexual psycopaths and neither could keep a lid on the other, while the mother, Violet, played a big part in The Firm and she's barely even in Legend.

Legend does glamorise the Kray twins in the same way Straight Outta Compton made NWA's members look like angels, but then history is written by the winners, isn't it ?

Even this review is biased to what I think of the movie.

Go and see it for yourselves and make your own minds up ...

STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON respectable to raise a family of her own.

Ronnie is the black sheep of the family, teetering on the edge of madness and tiptoeing the line between rage and paranoia on a daily basis, occasionally stepping into both territories to wreak havoc on everything and everyone around him.

Reggie seems almost normal by comparison.

And that's kind of the point. In the beginning, Frances has a chance. She can see the promised land and can almost touch the velour curtains. The brothers open a nightclub casino which is doing very nicely, thank you, and things are looking up: they're making serious money without really needing to enforce their protection racket on anybody. She even persuades Reggie to take a break and go for a holiday on the south coast ... which is when it all starts to unravel.

Left alone and unchecked, Ronnie is having a ball with the club and by the time Reggie comes back it's too late everything they worked for has been destroyed by his psychotic sibling, hellbent on destruction almost to spite his brother.

Almost? Most definitely in the eyes of the film-maker.

From then on, it's a tug-of-war between the twins and the wife ...

On the face of it, this is a stylish and gripping drama that keeps you riveted till the end. Hardy gives phenomenal performances in both lead roles, the seething menace of Reggie as he tries to keep it together while Ronnie is going berserk beside him are both portrayed with just the right level of sneering malevolence and utter disdain. The visuals are seamless too, but then we're decades away from "looking for the join" in anything like this.

The period details are impeccable too, from the decadent American cars, the finely tailored suits and dresses, the music played throughout, as well as less obvious things like advertising hoardings and chalk boards outside shops.

This is sixties London: you're there.

If you only take Legend on those terms it's a fine movie. Everyone in the star-studded cast does a good job and the story itself is believable .. unless you know more about what the Krays were really like, of course.

There's too many differences between the fantasy and the grim reality to go into here and in that respect the previous

Biopic of west coast rap group NWA. Dr Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E and the gang that grew into the infamous 80s hip hop outfit, Niggaz With Attitude (NWA), are all here in a somewhat fluffy version of events that avoids many of the real controversies surrounding these talented, visionary but deeply flawed characters. Given that the band themselves sanctioned the movie and produced it themselves, it's no wonder this is a sanitized story, focusing on the genius production of Dre, the prolific lyrical ability of Cube and the incendiary business nous of E. There's little in the way of character development for anyone not in the band apart from their manager, Jerry Heller, played with just the right balance of industry experience and fear of what he's getting into by Paul Giamatti and there's not a single female in the movie who isn't a biatch or a ho ... but then this is a film about NWA. Fans of the group will lap it up and the gig shows along with some of the studio and recording session scenes are very well done, but ultimately this is just like so many other bland bio's. To make it worse, I just couldn't stop thinking about the opening to their hit single, Express Yourself: "Yo man there's a lot of brothers out there flakin' and perpatratin' who scared to kick reality ..."

It would've been a much better and way more involving movie had they gone for the warts and all approach taken with the James Brown film, Get On Up, which is infinitely superior to this sugar-coated confection.

BOOKS red & rit Frederick Forsyth in his memoir THE OUTSIDER: MY LIFE IN INTRIGUE (Bantam Press £20.00) tells the story of how in his early thirties he found himself jobless and flat broke and needing to make some money, decided to write a novel. The result was The Day of the Jackal. Money made, and ten million copies later it is still regarded as a groundbreaking novel in the thriller fast paced story telling arena.

His memoir is also fast paced and full of surprises as he regales us with stories of life as a foreign correspondent working for Reuters and the BBC. Yes, it is amusing and at times rather frightening as to what the world can sometimes do and show.

However it is also extremely moving as Mr. Forsyth does indeed come to understand the futility of war. Compelling.

In the 1980’s and early 1990’s I had a career running pubs and nightclubs and used to enjoy the occasional all day drinking session, usually on a cold winters day, safe in the warm glow of a welcoming pub , drinks poured, the comforting colour of a glistening pint reflected in the wood glowing fire.

Gosh, I’m getting a little poetic about those days with convivial friends and the laughter in those smoke filled rooms. Long gone, rather like the rose tinted years of Soho and the drinking dens such as The Colony Room and The Coach and Horses which have been widely written about , the legendary drinkers who held court, John Deakin, Daniel Farson and who could forget Jeffrey Bernard who was quite often thanks to Sally Smirnoff, unwell. Certainly not the painter Francis Bacon, who spent many an hour propping up the bars of Soho, and is now the subject of the recollections of Michael Peppiatt.

FRANCIS BACON IN YOUR BLOOD: A MEMOIR (Bloomsbury Circus £17.99) It is a thirty year story of a friendship that began with a lunch of Oysters and Chablis after Peppiatt had approached Francis for an interview for a student maga-

zine he was editing. The lunch marked the beginning of the three decade friendship which over the years has given the author enough material for five other books on his subject including a fulsome biography published just a few years after Bacon’s death. However this time we are presented with a memoir and Peppiatt proves to be a first class raconteur in bringing the painter back to life and perhaps for the first time there is a glimpse of the inner Bacon before he is sliced up along the years in various documentaries and profiles. You feel like an eavesdropper in a drunken all day Colony Room conversation, with champagne flowing. Francis’ paintings tended to reflect the bleakness of the world as he perceived it and there is the argument that perhaps the artist focussed on the seedier, sadistic side of life when confronting the canvas, concentrating on the stuff of nightmares instead of expanding the emotional range. Great works of art but not drawing room material for the emotionally sensitive.

However you come away from this memoir with a sense of the person hidden in the pictures, the bon viveur, shameless, brilliant and waspish, with a taste for good food and above all excellent champagne.

We seem to be onto a sort of pattern here as attention is turned to Gore Vidal who, in his long life could certainly be described as waspish. It is difficult to categorise Vidal who since the late 1940’s when his career really got going, liked to be the centre of attention. The writer Jay Parini got to know the polymath in the 1980’s when he discovered he was a neighbour when living in southern Italy. The result of that friendship is the thoroughly readable and enthralling account subtly titled EVERY TIME A FRIEND SUCCEEDS SOMETHING INSIDE ME DIES: THE LIFE OF GORE VIDAL (Little Brown £25.00). There is no doubt that for a large part of the latter half of the twentieth century Vidal was at the centre it seemed of all of America’s social glitterati, his

wit, his writing, friendships with the rich, the famous, the politicians are all chronicled here. What comes across though more than anything is Vidal’s need to be at the centre…of everything, have the last word, be on hand to provide the wittiest remark, the biting put down, an Oscar Wilde reborn. He was also famous for his feuds with the likes of Truman Capote and Norman Mailer. It is sad that a man who was so bright and so clever spent his last years in paranoid isolation especially after the death of his long term partner Howard Austin in 2003. Parini relates the story of an elderly Vidal waking in a panic convinced that he was the victim of radioactivity that had made its way from Italy to Chernobyl. In reality, he had a bad hangover.

Time for some light relief, time for a little Supermarionation. INTO THUNDERBIRDS: THE VAULT (Virgin Books £25.00). Discover the history of the TV series that is arguably the most well known creation from the fertile imagination of Gerry

Anderson. Everyone has their memories of this series that premiered in September 1965. This illustrious tome complied by researcher and historian extraordinaire Marcus Hearn, contains everything you need to know, all thirty two episodes are examined. To describe this book as a coffee table favourite would be doing it an injustice as this beautifully illustrated and informative guide will answer all the questions and queries that have been festering over the last fifty years. Actually, I have a question. I want to know why live crocodiles were used in one of the most memorable episodes that was called Attack of the Alligators”! Also there is no discussion of the unresolved and unspoken sexual tension between Lady Penelope and ever loyal Parker. Oh, just me is it, that huge pink Rolls Royce was just that? Okay.

This edition: Southampton singer/songwriter STEVE LOWIS. When did your musical journey begin?

I started playing acoustic guitar when I was 12. My dad played guitar when he was a lad and had his old “Eko” guitar in the house which I used to learn on. I grew up listening to a lot of artists such as Johnny Cash, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Buddy Holly and Don Williams. I met a friend who played lead guitar and we formed a duo called “The Copy Cats”. We wrote some basic songs together, but mainly covered songs by Oasis and learnt bar chords from Green Day’s music. We recorded them on a 4 track tape deck.

Those were fun times. I think I still have an old tape or two kicking around somewhere.

Describe your musical style.

A very good friend of mine, an actress called Gillian Tully was so disappointed with the lacklustre efforts of the region’s filmmakers to network and form alliances that she decided to take the bull by the horns and present the south of England’s first ever exhibition of talent and film services.

Gillian- the founder and C.E.O of FILM EXPO SOUTH (F.E.S) has organised for the event to be held at Southampton’s Ageas Bowl intending to not only link the area’s skillset but promote new filmmakers and assist in producing and nurturing careers- both new and old.

I asked Gill to define the event- ‘It’s about raising awareness of what’s happening and who’s doing it’ she said- ‘It’s about collaboration… it’s about bringing together filmmakers and the talent and services necessary to create and sustain production- along the south coast.’

Why do we need to create a forum here, what’s wrong with utilising London- it is after all the longstanding hub? ‘London is very expensive, overcrowded and too condensed. The industry is bigger than London but nobody realised the potential for networking here… it was very disjointed- so we needed a platform to shout from- F.E.S was designed to let the world know what’s happening, shake things up.’

What’s your background?“Ha, I’m an actress, but was a late starter- usual thing- the school play aged nine- got the bug but didn’t let it free until I was 26, that’s when I finally pushed forward and studied performing arts and theatre studies at Southampton’s City College.” She went on to star in television and film productions and even trod the

boards in ‘The woman who cooked her husband’- directed

by Debbie Issitt- in London’s West End- at the Ambassador Theatre- playing the lead of Laura… and received great reviews before returning to Southampton and a few other roles which eventually dried up due to the desertscape industry here in the south… “I was amazed that so much potential was at hand and yet nobody was really taking advantage of it… I was stunned by the poor networking approach of artists and auteurs and decided to give the industry a shake by the tail.” She is fast becoming an icon, a bright shining light in the dank dark depths that is the British film industrychampioning filmmakers of all background and demographic in the south of England. Gill has campaigned for change and unification of the local industry and will be presenting FILM EXPO SOUTH at the Ageas Bowl in West End in Southampton on the 4th of Feb 2016. It is the movie industry’s premier event in the south of England, and should later become one of the diary-noted primary exhibitions in Europe… watch this space… Be there.

One of the productions that Gillian is promoting is currently shooting in the New Forest.

It’s all a bit hush hush at the moment but I did get the chance to chat with the director (Deanna Dewey) and the film’s headlining actress (Sandra Dickinson).

It didn’t start well though…

“Hello Barbara” I began… “I remember when you were on The Golden Shot with Bob Monkhouse…” the petit blonde actress and star of stage, screen and television looked at me stoney-faced and replied- “I’m Sandra and no, I wasn’t on The Golden Shot…” we laughed… she doesn’t take herself too seriously and she continued to take the proverbial wee out of me all day toowhich of course was well deserved. Sandra’s career has

been varied and long serving.

Born Sandra Searles in Washington- U.S; the American-British actress trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London and has often played the archetypal dumb blonde in the UK– notably commencing with a Birds-Eye Beefburger TV ad’ directed by Alan Parker, in the 1970’s.

She married the British actor Peter Davison on 26 December 1978, divorcing in 1994. They composed and performed the theme tune to the 1980s children's programme Button Moon but Sandra is possibly best noted for the character of Trillion in The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy and an appearance in Superman III. She was a regular on The Des O’Connor Show in the mid Seventies and has continued to work in all areas of production ever since… she certainly isn’t the dizzy blonde she portrayed for decades… indeed a bright and beautiful shining light… even today at age 66, there’s just no stopping this girl.

Director Deanna Dewey is tightlipped about the story they’re shooting, it’s a comedy called Dead Fred (could be a take on Drop Dead Fred?) but I’m pretty certain it’s SHERRIE KELLEY'S DARK COMEDY OF ‘DEAD FRED’Featuring three women in their sixties who are tasked with disposing of a body that their sick friend has kept in her basement freezer for four years.

It’s to be released next year but they don’t have a sales agent in place yet.

Deanna has been directing for five years and is really pleased with the shoot so far, she’s a talented multi-award winning writer and we will hear much from her in the future.

It’s mainly alternative folk/country sound, but I like to feel I bring subtle influences from other genres. I love Motown and soul, pop and rock, so try to write catchy lyrics that mean something and are written from the heart. I’m currently recording a new album “Chapters” with my band The Lowis Lanes.

What inspires your writing?

As a qualified psychiatric nurse I meet many people in this field of work. Over the years I have been inspired by the strength of people who struggle with the effects of mental illness. It has helped me to see life from a different perspective and has opened my eyes to the challenges people face and overcome. I try to capture these experiences in some of my songs and lyrics, whilst maintaining a hopeful message throughout.

Which venues have you played in Southampton?

I’ve played many of the popular venues, including The Joiners, Talking Heads, The Brook, The Hobbit and recently the Engine Rooms for the Future Music Songwriting competition which I won this year. I also love playing in some of Southampton’s historic venues as part of the annual Music in the City festival in October.

Tell us about some of the events you organise.

I helped to arrange a free music festival in Mayflower Park “The Access Fest”, for five years. It helped to raise money for a local homelessness charity: Society of St James, and featured artists who have gone on to be one of Southampton’s most successful and awesome bands - Band of Skulls. My longest running event, now in its 6th year, raises money for The Art House, where we hold “Three Monkeys”, featuring three acts on the 3rd Friday of each month.

SOUTHAMPTON’S 1ST FESTIVAL OF WORDS 23rd October to 1st November SO: To Speak hits Southampton for 10 days in late October, when the city comes alive with its first Word Festival. Writers, poets, , speakers, singers, thespians, and storytellers will be appearing at various venues to showcase the literary culture we have in the city.

A host of passionate organisations and people, led by Southampton Festivals, have put together a great programme of events and entertainment, classes, new publications, competitions and exhibitions for this new city event. Between 23rd October and 1st November SO: To Speak will celebrate both Southampton’s heritage and the great array of talent that we have in the city now.

The Shakesperts will be performing ‘Kings in a Car Park’ a brand new quickfire adaptation of five plays to show that whatever Leicester can do, Southampton can top it. The theatrical element of the Festival is bolstered by a new promenade production by the Sarah Siddons Fan Club.

The Square will also be the festival hub with an office and Blackwell’s pop-up bookshop.

SO: To Speak is also about bringing out the writer in all of us, and supporting the writers of the future.

From book signings on Ferries to Shakespeare in a car park, it is clear this festival has a lot to offer – there is something for everyone, and lots for many. It’s long overdue and just what we needed.

That time again all ready, and what an exciting and busy few months it has been. August saw me heading to Germany for the FEI European Equestrian Championships before jetting back to London for the Euro Hockey Championships.

Then September culminated in my Charity Ball at the Grand Harbour Hotel.

Life is all a bit of whirlwind at the moment, but I'm loving it! I have been picking up new sports to host including work on the equestrian, continuing my work on the Premier League and I have recently found out I'm off to Rio for the IOC in November to help them put together and try out the sports presentation for the hockey at next year's Olympics. Yep it's a hard life but "don't fie wishing!" as our editor told me, often.

This season I have an amazing opportunity with the Premier League with my studio show going really well. It's still nice to be out on the road pitch side though and it's been great to be at St Mary's for lots of games. Despite being out of Europe I get the feeling Southampton are going to have a good year. A great win v MK Dons in the Capital One Cup and three points versus Swansea to end September seems to have kick started the season. A strong performance against Manchester United which we were unlucky to loose, plus a great relationship between Pelle, Tadic and Mane all shows the right signs that the might Red and White are on the right track for a fruitful season in the Premier League.

Yes Michael ... very good, bless.Ed] let's have a word on the cricket, as you all probably know by now, I'm part of the match day presentation team at Hampshire Cricket and it was a pleasure for me to host the end of Season awards this year with BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James. What a season it was for Hampshire, a 6th consecutive T20 Finals day and the only side to reach the latter stages of both the T20 and One Day competitions, and not forgetting the Great Escape with the securing of Championship Cricket for another season at the Ageas Bowl! Hopefully the 2016 Season will bring even more success. Congratulations goes to Gareth Berg who won Players Player and Fans Player and also to Mason Crane for Breakthrough Player of the Year, Fidel Edwards for Bowler of the Year, Michael Carberry Batsman of the Year and Sean Ervine Club Man of the Year.

I have also been lucky over the last few months to have presented a few charity nights across Southampton. So much effort goes in to putting on these events and the money that is raised supports such valuable work. So hats off to a name many of you will know, Rufus Stone's Malc Eyers and his wife Heather, hosted a night at the Concorde for Wessex Heartbeat back in September. It was a real pleasure to present it, with superb live music from The Love Soul Choir, Strapped for Cash and of course Rufus Stone.

And of course talking of charity, a massive thank you to everyone who supported my charity ball on the 26th September. It was a fantastic night, which Elton and his Live Band getting everyone on their feet. I must also thank Colin Phillips my fellow AND Guide contributor and cousin [Cousin?

That explains a lot! Ed] for coming along to entertain the crowd with his magic. Valuable funds were raised for FIVE local causes, Rose Road, Dare2Express, Countess Mountbatten Hospice, DSA and Bens Hero's Trust. Thank you all for your fantastic support!

There are three reasons for his inclusion.

Firstly, he built the ground for which we had waited many a year and which formed the basis of all other successes we have had. Secondly, his vision was to start and lay the foundations for the current Saints academy, which has benefited us so much on the pitch and financially. Finally, without his stewardship we would never have gone into administration and thus never had the chance to see Marcus Liebher take over the running of our club and the unprecedented success we have had over recent years.

MARCUS LIEBHERR. 98 (painful, very painful) days after going into administration Marcus Liebherr bought Southampton Football Club. And, if reports are to be believed, for about half the price Liverpool paid for Dejan Lovren. In his brief spell at the head of our club he brought joy and success back to the Saints - and brought a big beaming smile to every face, including his own, that was at Wembley to win the Johnstone Paint Trophy. Five months later he tragically passed away and the reigns of the club went on to his daughter, Katharina Liebherr. A chip off the block, in terms of nurturing our football club, she famously said “Let me say this. I will ensure that all decisions made about the future of the club will be in the best interests of its staff, players, management and fans and will be taken with the prime objective of honouring

He didn’t leave Liverpool in very good condition as their manager and when he managed us, those in the know always said we avoided relegation, in his one season because of Terry Copper’s late season interventions. But he is best remembered, not just be Saint’s fans but by the footballing world as a whole, not just for signing Senegalese player Ali Dia, but that on the day he played his only game in the Premier League, he replaced as a substitute the great Matt Le Tissier, and played so poorly, was substituted after only 20 minutes on the field. Matt Le Tissier recalled the story in a television interview saying that Dia spent only a weekend at the club. He first came down to train with the team on Friday morning; according to Le Tissier he "didn't look very good" and the players thought that they would "never see him again", but the next day Dia was surprisingly named on the bench. His performance on the field after he came on to replace Le Tissier "was unbelievable. He ran around the pitch like Bambi on ice, it was very very embarrassing to watch. Thanks Graham!

RONALD KOEMAN To be honest I always found Pochettino a bit dour. Devastated at the time when he left but had I known who would take his place. I genuinely think Ronald Koeman is my favourite Saints manager ever. So imagine my joy on hearing a recent interview of his - which suggests he may be staying a long time.

It is reported that “Koeman is Happy At St Mary's And Wants A Trophy Before He leaves “ Well, if you exclude the Johnston paint trophy, which we can’t win any way now, its 40 years since we won a trophy. On this basis, hew could become our longest serving manager.

Which is much better than the prospect of him leaving at the end of next season.

FANZINES There was a time before the internet, smart phones, The premier league, rolling Sky Sports and Daily Newspaper football pull outs, when us fans really knew very little about what was going on in the world of football. We knew who played for who. Who was top or bottom of the league. And that Frank Saul wasn’t much compensation for Martin Chivers. The papers back pages had the odd rumour and then there was the Pink. One of only two Saturday football specials left in the UK. But it was all sanistised. Then suddenly Fanzines appeared. Written and produced by fans for fans, there was humour, bitting criticism and most importantly insight.

Suddently we were finding out about who owned our club, what their motives were, what they did well and what was a bit underhand. We had Red Stripe, On the March and the Ugly Inside and probably some more I cant recall. Saints fanzines gained notoriety when “On The March”, featured an Ian Branfoot cover with the tag “Hope you die soon”. Bad as Branfoot was as a manager, that was a step too far, without doubt that got our fanzine into the national press.

Unlike saints, that particular fanzine didn’t march on and never appeared again.

The Ugly Inside is the only current survivor, operating online now, as an internet site and on social media. It has made its creator, Nick Illingsworth, a firm favourite with radio and Tv stations for a fans view of events and I note he recently appeared on Match of the day 2, in their feature on Southampton.

Alongside him was one of the cities great six-a-side centre halves - Dave Webster.

Of course the best thing about Saints, as ever, is what happens next.
