As we reflect on the past year, our gratitude for your continued support remains constant. We saw a significant increase in new individuals reaching out for our services, with over 200 new intakes coming to us from a wider geographic reach and new referral sources. Our professional and effective program team was able to meet each of them where they were in their journey and initiate immediate care.
You will see many references throughout this report on those we served and our engaged community of volunteers and donors who are the foundation of our mission. This is crucial support that allows us to provide our distinctive, individualized care to each client. Our increasing number of new intakes are growing in conjunction with our overall client group, many who remain active from previous years. We may start with a client when they are initially diagnosed but our services are available to them always.
We built on the success of our first Half Marathon & 5K, and added a survivor tent for our second annual, and even more successful race, offering a special area available for those impacted by cancer either personally or as a caregiver. This focus, along with great weather and a shared commitment to raising awareness of our organization, enhanced our engagement with those participating in honor or memory of a loved one.
Expanding our impact and connecting people with our mission is a focus every single day. In January, we held a special fundraiser “A Night to Support SOUL RYEDERS” and filled the room with long-time supporters and many new faces who joined us to hear more about our important work. We have highlighted this fabulous evening within these pages, including a link to our new mission impact video on the back page. We hope you will take a few moments to view it and feel the transformative power of our collective work.
Looking ahead, we are energized and hopeful for the year to come. With your continued support, our leadership team and board of directors, we will keep building on our foundation and find more innovative ways to engage with those we serve.
Thank you for believing in us. We hope you enjoy reading about the many ways SOUL RYEDERS has served the community and supported individuals dealing with cancer and its impact—all made possible because of you.
With gratitude,
Brian Smith

Whether you are newly diagnosed, experiencing a recurrence or are in remission, we are here to support you. Every one of our clients is a person first and one size does not fit all. Clients are defined at SOUL RYEDERS as anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer. SOUL RYEDERS will help ensure that you are surrounded by community and supported by those who understand each phase — from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

As a caregiver, paying attention to your own health and well-being is imperative. Caregivers are frequently overlooked and usually stretched to capacity. Being there for your loved one means taking care of yourself too. SOUL RYEDERS provides an empathetic ear during what can be a turbulent time. In the moments when you feel overwhelmed, our team is here for you, providing coping strategies and information on how to be an effective and impactful caregiver.
Our dedicated volunteers are the core of SOUL RYEDERS. All of our volunteer opportunities are client-focused; involving both direct and indirect support. We could not provide our wide range of services without this tireless team that continually goes above and beyond. Volunteers of all ages contribute their time and energy in a myriad of ways, and we strive to collaborate with them to find the most meaningful direction for their volunteer time.
SOUL RYEDERS would not exist without the generosity of people willing to share their resources in order to help our clients and caregivers. Many donors have been touched by cancer, either directly or indirectly. Our unique and personalized services make giving to SOUL RYEDERS a very tangible investment. Donors not only help others but experience personal fulfillment knowing what a difference they are making in our greater community.

We are deeply connected to the community we serve making a real difference in the lives of individuals and families in need. We provided assistance and guidance to OVER 360 CLIENTS AND CAREGIVERS during these challenging times.
Offering wigs and advice to individuals facing hair loss due to medical treatments is a remarkable service we provide. OVER 130 WIGS were provided to our clients as well as donations of 60 INTERNATIONALLY to Wigs without Borders and 492 to other domestic locations in need.
We had 1061 VOLUNTEERS contribute to 2791 ENGAGEMENT HOURS supporting our programs, community engagements and administrative efforts.

The program has continued to expand since it’s launch matching 10 CLIENTS WITH 8 PEER MENTORS.
SOUL RYEDERS was such a lifeline to me following my diagnosis. The support I received helped me and my family feel less alone and overwhelmed.
A shout out to all the teams and team captains who pulled together these amazing groups to participate in the race while fundraising to support SOUL RYEDERS.

Building a strong, sustainable future for our organization is always top of mind and we are always excited to find new ways to engage with our community. This past January, we decided to hold a special fundraiser, “A Night to Support SOUL RYEDERS,” to expand our impact and connect with more people who may want to learn more about our important work.
We are incredibly grateful to our current donors who believe in our cause and invited them to spread the word about our mission with friends, family and colleagues and join us for an evening of food, fun and festivities. Over 200 guests filled the room and experienced an environment bursting with energy, purpose and community spirit.
Embedded in our base of longtime supporters are several members with incredible talent and perform in a band called “Night Owl.” We are grateful to Mark and MaryEllen Doran for coordinating the band’s involvement in our event as they were the hit of the evening with set after set of fantastic music. Mike Guarnieri, the band’s talented drummer and avid SOUL RYEDERS supporter, enthusiastically involved his company, Evolution Credit Partners, as a sponsor for our event! We were thrilled to welcome over 20 of their employees to join us for the evening of fun.
The highlight of the night was the premier of our new organizational impact video. It had been years since SOUL RYEDERS had a professional video to showcase our work and we have longed for the resources to create something to share with our community that expresses the heart and soul of what we do. Thanks to the time and talent of our Giving Circle member Caroline Walker, our long-cherished hope came true. Caroline enlisted the help of Steve Lackey and Colin Knapp from their company Broadview Films and formed
a project team to bring this video to life. The care and professionalism this team exhibited was exceptional from beginning to end. Their passion to capture the emotion and life changing impact of our work resulted in the production of a short yet powerful film that we can use to pave the way for deeper connections and our fundraising efforts.
With barely a dry eye in the room, the crowd stood in awe as they watched, hearing the stories from those we serve and learning about the breadth of our mission. After the completion of the video, we held a coin raise to ask for donations; big or small, every dollar helps us grow and reach more people. Raising nearly $90,000 for our programming, this fundraiser surpassed our expectations as did the overwhelming generosity in this community. We’re delighted to receive such incredible support from both familiar faces and new ones!
The evening continued with music, dancing, connections and people feeling part of something special. •
Our leadership team is laser focused on making a difference every day for those we serve. Recognizing that our mission is only as strong as the people behind it, we strengthened our commitment to staff development to ensure our team has the necessary skills to be successful. After completing a brief survey on particular areas of interest, Roseanne Braiotta, Program Manager, developed a quarterly in-service workshop plan with some common areas of focus.
This year, our team participated in a “Spheres of Influence” training which is a concept that encourages a proactive and balanced approach to job responsibilities encouraging a focus on the most critical, impactful items in our “sphere” while still working together on shared projects, initiatives and tasks. Thanks to Meg Byfield, Senior Director, Strategy and Data Insights at The Shade Store, who kindly provided complementary training to our team. We have adapted the Spheres model into our staff planning and meet regularly to review any important developments.
Maximizing impact with limited resources is a challenge that is often faced by many non-profits. Staying organized and improving time management is critical to the teams’ success so finding tips on strategies to be more effective is always welcome. We were thrilled to have Risa Seelenfreund, President of Diligencia Talent Consulting, provide our staff with an in-kind training on valuable time management skills. In a flexible workplace environment, it is important to align employee/employer guidelines and interests. Effective planning and prioritization can help with the balancing of responsibilities and we learned some useful tips to incorporate into our roles.
Our team works together and to support each other, building a stronger, more connected group. Team bonding is important to us and we find unique ways to learn more about each other. At the start of every team meeting, we have a “pick one” poll where you choose your favorite of two options; for example, creamy or chunky peanut butter. Prior to our annual strategic planning meeting, we kicked off the day with a casual team nature walk at a local conservancy to clear our minds and take in the beautiful scenery. We gathered at the end and engaged in a brief writing exercise about our natural surroundings we then read aloud to each other — an inspiring way to start the day of planning for the coming year. Investing in our team is essential to the long term growth and success of our programs and services. Empowering the team with the essential skills and leadership abilities provides the tools needed to help fulfill our mission. •
The breadth of our impact would not be possible without the enthusiastic contribution of time and talent from our volunteers. Their incredible efforts make such a tangible contribution to our organization in a variety of ways. We would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge and thank them whenever we can. We have chosen a few special ones to highlight for this fiscal year:
Every year, we are grateful to connect with Maria Siano at the Osborn Home in Rye for volunteer opportunities for both the staff and residents. This past October, Maria and a group of staff members from the Osborn Home donated an assortment of amazing comfort items such as fuzzy socks, candles, hand painted rocks, hot cocoa and mugs. Along with lovely handwritten notes, these thoughtful gifts were assembled in beautiful gift bags for SOUL RYEDERS to share with our clients and caregivers.
We are so thankful to everyone at The Osborn Home who donated and helped make this happen. The recipients were thrilled as they unpacked all the goodies from their bags!
Several times a year, we hold Stitch & Sip sessions in our office where we invite our community to join us in our office to work on different handmade projects for our clients and caregivers while connecting with others and enjoying some light snacks and drinks. A group of lovely women from the St Regis in Rye wanted to pull together a philanthropic activity for their residents and they kindly thought of SOUL RYEDERS. So we thought why not just bring Stitch & Sip to them! For over 2 hours, this group made no-sew fleece blankets and paper flowers to augment our SOUL Lifting kits and care packages. We also received several generous donations and requests to do this again!
Thank you very much for the wonderful care package you sent me. Your kindness and generosity truly brightened my day and provided comfort during this challenging time. Every item was chosen with such thoughtfulness, and it reminded me that I’m not alone in this journey. I am incredibly grateful for the work you do to bring hope and encouragement to patients like me.
As mentioned, we have our S&S sessions scheduled throughout the year where old and new faces gather to chat and connect while working on our various projects. Understanding that school, homework and sports make it hard for our local students to join us during the week, a few times a year we offer a weekend day session for teens who have service hours to complete or simply want to be involved in giving back. Not only has the attendance been phenomenal with teens representing over 10 different local schools, but the enthusiasm and attention to detail for each of our projects has been remarkable.
SOUL RYEDERS has become a favorite organization for community service days and other similar opportunities organized by many of our local schools. We love the opportunity to get children involved in volunteering, to learn from a young age what it means to give back and help someone in need. For the last several years, Midland School in Rye and FE Bellows in Rye Neck invited us to be a part of their service days to work on their beloved project of decorating autograph bags for the campers at Camp Kesem; a partner organization of SOUL RYEDERS. For the first time, we were honored to host a group of girls from the Whitby School for
their school service initiative. It is heartwarming to watch as they all so carefully craft each one of the bags while learning about what it means to volunteer and do something special to help others.
A member of our Board of Directors, Erika Unger, a social worker at The Mamaroneck Avenue School in White Plains, began a club for a group of students. They meet for lunch once a week and work on a special project. For over 2 years, this club has made dozens of special bracelets with a handmade note for all of our clients and caregivers who receive our care package. We are enamored by their spirit and creativity!
We are deeply grateful for each and every one of our volunteers. Your passion and commitment to our organization is not only felt by us but most especially by those we serve. We look forward to your continued support for years to come.
