2022-2023 LETTER TO OUR SOUL RYEDERS COMMUNITY Dear Friends, Each and every day, we are inspired by the connections we are fortunate to make with all of you who donate, volunteer or come to us for our services. Our ability to create an extraordinary community of hope and support for those impacted by cancer is only possible because of your outreach and generosity. We have a lot of great activity to share about our 2022-2023 fiscal year starting with celebrating our 10th anniversary of The Wig Exchange! Providing wigs to those who are dealing with hair loss due to cancer treatment is a service we have provided through the remarkable efforts of our volunteer Wig Advisors, who we are thrilled to highlight in this report. Through their own words, you will understand what it means for them to connect with our clients after once experiencing a cancer diagnosis themselves. You will also learn of the impact of their “super powers” from the clients they have supported. We hope you are inspired by everything they had to say as well as the amazing financial support we received to help fund the creation of a new online inventory system to manage this impactful program. After 2 years, we were able to bring back our in person Stitch & Sip sessions! The office was filled with volunteers of all ages who shared their time and talent with us working on handmade projects for client care packages and SOUL Lifting kits. Featured on the cover of this years’ annual report are “Kindness Rocks” that were crafted during our special teen sessions and truly reflect the care and compassion that all of our volunteers put into everything they do for our clients and caregivers. For our clients and caregivers, we have continued to focus on enhancing our online programming including yoga, meditation and monthly workshops since that has enabled us to broaden our geographic reach throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and remain accessible for those who need that flexibility. As we continue to watch our new client numbers increase, we are diligently focused on our strategic plan to address their needs and increasing support. We continue to review our internal processes to ensure that we accommodate clients with the individualized connections and depth of resources they need. This calendar year we were thrilled to hold our inaugural half marathon & 5k event and thank everyone involved for their tireless efforts to make this an experience that will become an annual event for us. The planning for this meaningful endeavor began prior to this fiscal year and our vision came to life May 21, 2023. We recognize the importance of individual well-being and physical activity as a powerful tool during and after cancer treatments as well as coming together as a committed community of support for all those impacted by a cancer diagnosis. Save the date for May 19, 2024 to participate next year! We are so proud of the things we have been able to accomplish and hope you feel it too as you read about the thoughtfulness of every person who connects with us to ensure that SOUL RYEDERS is available to support anyone in our community affected by cancer. Our thanks to everyone who believes in us and the work we do.

With gratitude,

Bill Miller Chair, Board of Directors

Heidi Kitlas

Executive Director

CLIENTS

VOLUNTEERS

Whether you are newly diagnosed, experiencing a recurrence or are in remission, we are here to support you. Every one of our clients is a person first and one size does not fit all. Clients are defined at SOUL RYEDERS as anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer. SOUL RYEDERS will help ensure that you are surrounded by community and supported by those who understand each phase — from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

Our dedicated volunteers are the core of SOUL RYEDERS. All of our volunteer opportunities are client-focused; involving both direct and indirect support. We could not provide our wide range of services without this tireless team that continually goes above and beyond. Volunteers of all ages contribute their time and energy in a myriad of ways, and we strive to collaborate with them to find the most meaningful direction for their volunteer time.

CAREGIVERS

DONORS

As a caregiver, paying attention to your own health and wellbeing is imperative. Caregivers are frequently overlooked and usually stretched to capacity. Being there for your loved one means taking care of yourself too. SOUL RYEDERS provides an empathetic ear during what can be a turbulent time. In the moments when you feel overwhelmed, our team is here for you, providing coping strategies and information on how to be an effective and impactful caregiver.

SOUL RYEDERS would not exist without the generosity of people willing to share their resources in order to help our clients and caregivers. Many donors have been touched by cancer, either directly or indirectly. Our unique and personalized services make giving to SOUL RYEDERS a very tangible investment. Donors not only help others but experience personal fulfillment knowing what a difference they are making in our greater community.

EVENT HIGHLIGHT

Get Together to Give Together

What is a Giving Circle? To ensure the long-term sustainability of our programs and services, SOUL RYEDERS launched a formal Giving Circle in 2015 with three-year pledge commitments from each member. The Giving Circle offers a more predictable and sustainable fundraising model that helps us better support our organization’s growing ambition to offer robust programs and services to those in need. Current contributions range from $1,000 to $50,000 a year. All Giving Circle members have the opportunity to help shape and guide SOUL RYEDERS’ mission by volunteering their time and expertise. The Giving Circle also provides a social network, leadership development, personal engagement, learning opportunities, and philanthropic role modeling for others — including the next generation.

In January 2023, we held our Get Together to Give Together event which brought together current Giving Circle members and welcomed many who have been interested in learning more about SOUL RYEDERS. We were honored to have special guest and two-time cancer survivor, Ethan Zohn, share his story of personal perseverance in the face of his cancer diagnosis and how experiencing the impact of philanthropy as a donor and recipient, amplified his view on the transformative value of nonprofit organizations. Ethan won the reality TV show Survivor Africa and his $1 million prize was the springboard for over two decades of fascinating experiences with entrepreneurship, social purpose and advocacy. Ethan is a former professional soccer player, a two-time cancer survivor, sports broadcaster, TV personality, author, and Co-Founder of Grassroot Soccer (GRS). In 2011, after surviving a rare form of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and two bone marrow transplants, Ethan ran

the NYC and Boston marathons. He has since been named a global ambassador for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, StandUp2Cancer, Lymphoma Research Foundation, and AKTIV Against Cancer. Brian Smith, SOUL RYEDERS Board Member, shared his own cancer experience with having Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Brian knew of Ethan from his appearance on Survivor and had been following his public cancer experience. Remarkably, Brian correlated his own specific symptoms to those Ethan had conveyed which led to his diagnosis. It was extraordinary to connect both of them together at this event. Ethan and Brian both described how peer support, family and community connections at certain junctures helped throughout their cancer journey as they faced treatment and post-treatment life. It was inspiring to hear their stories and learn how the collective impact of the Giving Circle is the foundation for maintaining the personalized level of support for our clients that makes SOUL RYEDERS unique.

‘The key here is to do more than just show up today. It’s to leave here MOTIVATED. Motivated to make a difference IN YOURSELF by making a difference IN OTHERS.’ - Ethan Zohn 5

DONOR PROFILE

We would like to acknowledge two incredible fundraising events that took place this fiscal year.

Our New Wig Gallery An often overlooked part of our work is the behind the scenes technology used that allow our team to stay focused on the interpersonal aspect of our mission — direct contact and care of our clients. In 2012, The Wig Exchange program began with the loaning of wigs through word of mouth. Shortly after, we created a website to showcase our wig inventory. This site, while providing a broader reach, was not giving our clients the user experience they really needed. We identified a number of improvements to upgrade the online wig selection process, interviewed web designers to find the right fit and created a budget inline with our goals.

We were beyond amazed at the generosity of those of you who donated and allowed us to surpass our goal, allowing us to add a few extra features to the site! It was heartwarming to see people who have never donated to us before jump in to support this campaign!

To help us fund this project, we launched a “31 Days to Raise $5,000” campaign in honor of the 10th anniversary of The Wig Exchange. We were fortunate to have matching funds so every dollar raised enabled us to cover the $10,000 cost of the upgrade.

We are proud to be providing our clients a new, more flexible online platform for selecting their wigs and help to ease the stress of hair loss during their cancer experience. We could not have done this without your kindness and generosity.

The new Wig Gallery site which was launched in February 2023 provides our clients with: • an ease of accessibility during a vulnerable time • additional search features to preview the 1,000 plus wigs by color, length and style • a comparison tool to narrow down the search • increased connection and follow up with the SOUL RYEDERS team and Wig Advisor

DO WHAT MAKES YOUR SOUL SHINE Spotlight on Wig Advisor Sandy Chittenden The SOUL RYEDERS Do What Makes Your SOUL Shine team was formed to give YOU a chance to do a physical fitness challenge that inspires you and raise funds for our organization. Sandy Chittenden, one of our truly amazing Wig Advisor volunteers, took on the Making Strides Walk as her challenge and raised over $5,000 for SOUL RYEDERS! We appreciate everyone who donated to her fundraising efforts. We could not be more grateful to Sandy for helping increase the awareness of SOUL RYEDERS and doing the walk that made her SOUL shine. We are thankful to ALL of our donors to everyone who keeps SOUL RYEDERS in their hearts when thinking about donating! We can’t do this without you.

CELEBRATING THE 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE WIG EXCHANGE! The Wig Exchange loaned out our first wig over 10 years ago in January of 2012. This was the first program SOUL RYEDERS developed and it has continued to grow with the help of many amazing volunteers, especially our incredible Wig Advisors. Our primary mission is to provide individuals undergoing chemotherapy with high quality wigs and tips for managing the issues with cancer-related hair loss. We do this in a caring and confidential environment connecting each individual with one of our experienced Wig Advisors. The photo above is Susan Marynowski, the Director of The Wig Exchange, along with several members of the team. Our Wig Advisors are volunteers who are cancer survivors themselves and provide empathy, valuable information and insight — feeling that emotional support from someone who has been there, is truly an invaluable experience. What also makes The Wig Exchange special to our community is how we provide a meaningful way for wigs to be donated to us when someone has completed treatment and no longer needs their wig. Over the last 10 years, we have received an overwhelming amount of wig donations that have come to us from 38 states and 2 countries! Of the nearly 900 wigs we have inventoried, many are brand new with the tags still on them and for those that are gently used, we have them professionally cleaned by a licensed hair stylist in New York State. The experience of cancer can be so isolating and coping with loss of hair can add an additional toll on one’s well-being. With more than 1,400 wigs loaned out over the past 10 years, we have provided a program so those who come to us for a wig know they are not alone. We are here to offer support and compassion through The Wig Exchange and all our programming, resources and personalized services.

MEET OUR WIG ADVISORS Our volunteer Wig Advisors provide an invaluable service to us and our clients. We asked them to share their thoughts about what it means to them to be part of this program.

Kim Haas (4 years)

Jackie Mazzilli (10 years)

I love helping people who are feeling down about this daunting experience. Losing your hair is truly one of the hardest parts of having cancer. Being an advisor is a way to pay it forward. There is nothing better than putting a smile on someone’s face after finding a wig that makes them look like they did before their hair loss.

Having a strong family history of breast cancer, I knew I wanted to volunteer and do what I could to support others affected by cancer. Right after my own breast cancer diagnosis in 2013, I reached out to SOUL RYEDERS and asked to be involved in The Wig Exchange since they were such a big part of my journey helping me find my own wig. I also became part of the volunteer group for Mondays with SOUL RYEDERS helping clients apply makeup and eyebrows. It was a great experience being part of making so many women feel normal and pretty! While the client is trying on wigs, we have great conversations and even laugh about the ones that go in the “NO” pile…it lightens the experience and helps us open up, connect and develop a relationship.

Sandy Chittenden (12 years)

My first introduction to The Wig Exchange and SOUL RYEDERS was when I donated my own wig. A few months later, a friend of mine was in need of a wig, so I accompanied her, and I’ll never forget the feeling I experienced that day; listening to her, making her feel OK with the journey ahead, assisting her with tips of adjusting the wig and offering my honest opinion on how she looked. The entire process was so powerful and rewarding, I just knew I wanted to help so later that year, I became a Client Coordinator (now called Wig Advisor). What is most inspiring is observing an often very anxious, emotional client upon their arrival, to witnessing a more relaxed and beyond grateful client as they are departing. It is incredibly fulfilling knowing that I can help ease some worries, share my first hand experiences and really just be that someone that they can trust during the most turbulent time of their journey with cancer and hair loss. I continue to feel so privileged to help women affected by hair loss and honored to be part of such an amazing team and organization. I’ve made some wonderful friends, learned more about myself, some strengths and weaknesses and at the same time continue to heal.

There are so many things we could write about The Wig Exchange and its impact on our clients, but sharing actual quotes is so much more meaningful.

Janet Muller (10 years)

My journey with SOUL RYEDERS began with yoga and with the donation of my wig for the newly developed Wig Exchange program back in 2012. While I knew I wanted to be more involved, I wanted to be passionate about whatever it was. Becoming a Wig Advisor for The Wig Exchange program in 2013 became true perfection. I am able to provide women not only with high quality wigs, but emotional support. The Wig Exchange is special in many ways, offering ease, accessibility, minimal cost, all of which is a gift in itself. The Wig Advisors are cancer survivors and provide a different perspective. The personal connection created between the two is indescribable. Speaking with someone who has been there and survived is inspiring, hopeful and therapeutic for both.

Thank you for all you did to help me find a wig. It was a pleasure meeting my Client Coordinator. Her warmth and personality helped melt away any anxiety as I power through this difficult but common journey.”

Being diagnosed with cancer is scary and overwhelming but it is so incredibly touching to have people and organizations like yours that are caring and supporting you along the way. ”

“ “ “

I was looking for a wig but ended up with a lifeline” You have another ‘soul’ in your SOUL RYEDERS fan club!”

Thank you for this wonderful service that offers humanity and compassion during an otherwise horrible time. Thank you for the work you have done and the many miles you have walked to make this happen!”

Debbie Nye (10 years)

Sally Joyce (9 years)

I was introduced to SOUL RYEDERS many years ago and was so inspired by these women who, at the time, were participating in the Avon Walk and I learned about the new Wig Exchange program that was in development. My wig was one of the first donations! I wanted to help others as my own hair loss-wig experience when going through chemo was quite traumatic so I jumped in as a Wig Advisor.

I am so proud to work as a Wig Exchange Wig Advisor with SOUL RYEDERS. Cancer was difficult, but there were so many people there to help and encourage me along my journey, and I see this work as an opportunity to recreate that act of kindness for others.

Everyone does their best to make sure our clients have the best experience possible during one of the most difficult times in their lives. The comfort of the community, all the staff and volunteers involved, from that first phone call or email,to the client walking out the door with a wig, is beyond measure. The SOUL RYEDERS office where we meet is not just a building but a home that welcomes with open arms! When I walk out of a wig appointment with a client, I’m lifted in spirit and feel like there was just no better way to have spent that previous hour!

Mary Ciampi (10 years)

I got involved with The Wig Exchange after donating my own wig. I read an article about how The Wig Exchange was expanding, so I offered to volunteer. It warms my heart to see women leave with a beautiful wig and an even more beautiful smile on their face! Being part of The Wig Exchange allows me to reach out to other women who are going through this difficult journey and offer them some hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Patricia Alarcon Cavalie (5 years)

My thanks to SOUL RYEDERS for their support and the strength they gave me. They helped smooth the process of navigating the uncharted waters of this challenging disease for me. They are an amazing organization and I am so happy to be a Wig Advisor for our Spanish speaking client community.

Devina O’Reilly (8 years)

In 2013, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and my world turned upside down. At that time, I did not reach out to SOUL RYEDERS and regret it. I had underestimated the trauma of losing my hair and the effect it would have on my world. I joined The Wig Exchange a year after my treatment was completed. I make a different and special connection with each “warrior” I meet. We sometimes laugh, cry, rant, or all of the above and my intention is to offer as much comfort and support to the brave soul who I’m helping find a wig. Being a Wig Advisor has been as healing for me as it is helpful to our clients. I’m honored and proud to be part of such a wonderful and unique team!

Thank you for all of your love, support and kindness to cancer patients in the area. My sister needed a safety blanket and that came to her in the shape of a wig.”

My Wig Advisor was patient, informative and friendly. Now I feel confident that when I’m well enough, I can go out with my hair looking good.”

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, top and everything in between. I am feeling overwhelmed but not by the info you shared with me. You brought me calm. Knowing now that there are programs available designed to bring one peace, clarity, and support is such an incredible gift. ”

Your smile, kindness and positivity today makes me want to live.”

Keep up the inspiring, supporting and encouraging work you are all doing — it is life changing!!!”

I did not know what to expect the wig trying on experience would be. It far surpassed my expectations. I felt so comfortable and as you said was even laughing at times; making the best of a situation that I never imagined myself in.”

I have been so honored to volunteer as a Wig Advisor for SOUL RYEDERS. Helping women find a wig that makes them feel confident and guide them through this part of their journey is a very rewarding experience.

Being a Wig Advisor has changed my life. I always said I was going to volunteer when I retired but I didn’t realize it would be so rewarding. Meeting with women in need of a wig and helping them make a choice is amazing. I’m honored to be able to help women facing such a hard time in their lives. The look on their faces when they’ve found the perfect wig is PRICELESS!!

Sandy Fizzinoglia (5 years)

I first became familiar with SOUL RYEDERS as a client. My oncology nurse told me about SOUL RYEDERS while I was going through active treatment for breast cancer in 2017. I met the most amazing, selfless, and caring volunteers through this phenomenal organization. I also met other women going through the same thing as me – diagnosis, treatment, and all the emotional (and physical) roller coaster side effects that come with a cancer diagnosis. When I completed my active treatment and my surgeries were behind me, I vowed to pay it forward. I wanted to help other women who were faced with a cancer diagnosis feel special and know that they were not alone. I wanted to help others feel special so I became a Wig Advisor for SOUL RYEDERS. I treasure the time I spend with my clients and their families as they enter the SOUL RYEDERS’ door. It is one of my life’s most fulfilling and life changing experiences.

Sara Miller (10 years)

SOUL RYEDERS embodies a selflessness and spirit of community for me. I am fortunate to be a Wig Advisor and connected to this group which continues to find new ways to raise money to support those with cancer and seek new ways to make the lives of those fighting the disease a little easier.

Kim Veber (5 years)

It was an enormous shock when I was diagnosed in 2017 with breast cancer at the age of 50. In one day, I went from a volunteer at SOUL RYEDERS to a client. On the day of my diagnosis one of my first calls was to SOUL RYEDERS and I am forever grateful that they helped guide me throughout my entire journey. Nothing prepares you for how difficult it is to lose your hair. SOUL RYEDERS connected me with women who had gone through this experience and were on the other side and this was such an enormous help to me. My personal experience impelled me to begin volunteering for The Wig Exchange as an advisor, helping other women find their own wigs and speaking to them about my own cancer journey. It is such a unique experience to have a woman who has gone through this be the person to help you select your wig. Working as a Wig Advisor has been such a healing part of my own story. I feel forever fortunate to SOUL RYEDERS not only for supporting me through my own cancer journey but for giving me the opportunity to assist and empower other women who are facing treatment.

Thank You! The Board of Directors, Race Co-Chairs and Leadership Team, thank our community, sponsors and partners — listed here— for believing in SOUL RYEDERS and supporting our inaugural Half Marathon & 5K on May 21, 2023. We were thrilled to congratulate over 1,100 finishers with the help of over 200 volunteers! Each and every person who participated, volunteered, sponsored and cheered helped us raise over $100,000 for our programs and services for anyone with any type of cancer in the Tri-State area. We are beyond grateful for the support we received from our entire community. YOU made this an incredible event to honor all those who have faced a cancer diagnosis. See you next year on May 19, 2024!
