SOUL RYEDERS MISSION

2023-2024 LETTER

TO OUR SOUL RYEDERS COMMUNITY

Dear Friends,

At SOUL RYEDERS, we believe in the power of collective effort to accomplish our mission. Over the past fiscal year (April 2023-March 2024), we have achieved some remarkable milestones because of the generosity and commitment of everyone involved with our organization.

Last year, we were able to transform an aspiration into a reality - creating our own half marathon & 5K walk/run event! Watching our vision come to life as 1100+ participants along with countless spectators and volunteers gathered at Playland Park in Rye on May 21, 2023 for our inaugural event was truly powerful. Most of those in attendance had been impacted by cancer in some way and being part of this event, no matter what role they played, helped them feel connected to SOUL RYEDERS and the profound work that we do. We highlight this inaugural celebration of coming together within these pages.

We also feature our annual Giving Circle event and the incredible founding members of our board of directors. These 8 individuals worked tirelessly to ensure the future of this organization from its beginning. Honoring them and announcing the creation of our Founders Advisory Council, was truly inspirational. We hope you too are moved by their dedication and heartfelt connection to this work.

As always, we like to keep you well informed about the progress of the projects you have so generously supported. In the fall of 2023, after our initial internal research and program setup, we launched our Peer Support Program! We believe this is a vital resource for our clients, connecting them with someone who has already experienced cancer themselves. You will read about some of the amazing individuals who were part of our first peer mentor training group, who now actively volunteer their time paired with new clients, providing an added level of depth and connection to our offerings.

You all play an integral role in our journey and your unwavering support fuels our determination to strive for ways to improve and enhance everything that we do in our organization and for those we serve. We hope you enjoy reading about all of our accomplishments this past year and feel the same excitement we do about these achievements.

With gratitude,

“The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.”

CLIENTS

Whether you are newly diagnosed, experiencing a recurrence or are in remission, we are here to support you. Every one of our clients is a person first and one size does not fit all. Clients are defined at SOUL RYEDERS as anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer. SOUL RYEDERS will help ensure that you are surrounded by community and supported by those who understand each phase — from diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

CAREGIVERS

As a caregiver, paying attention to your own health and wellbeing is imperative. Caregivers are frequently overlooked and usually stretched to capacity. Being there for your loved one means taking care of yourself too. SOUL RYEDERS provides an empathetic ear during what can be a turbulent time. In the moments when you feel overwhelmed, our team is here for you, providing coping strategies and information on how to be an effective and impactful caregiver.

VOLUNTEERS

Our dedicated volunteers are the core of SOUL RYEDERS. All of our volunteer opportunities are client-focused; involving both direct and indirect support. We could not provide our wide range of services without this tireless team that continually goes above and beyond. Volunteers of all ages contribute their time and energy in a myriad of ways, and we strive to collaborate with them to find the most meaningful direction for their volunteer time.

DONORS

SOUL RYEDERS would not exist without the generosity of people willing to share their resources in order to help our clients and caregivers. Many donors have been touched by cancer, either directly or indirectly. Our unique and personalized services make giving to SOUL RYEDERS a very tangible investment. Donors not only help others but experience personal fulfillment knowing what a difference they are making in our greater community.

This past February 2024, we held our annual Giving Circle “Get Together to Give Together” event but this one had an extra special touch. Not only did we celebrate our current members and welcome some new friends; we joined together to honor the founding Board of Directors members who invested years in fortifying our organization. The passion and commitment of these visionary individuals laid the foundation for the success of SOUL RYEDERS. “Their tireless efforts and selfless dedication have enabled us to touch the lives of countless individuals and families affected by cancer, offering hope, support, and a sense of community during some of life’s most challenging moments,” said Heidi Kitlas, SOUL RYEDERS Executive Director.

During the evening’s program, the honorees had the opportunity to reflect on the profound impact SOUL RYEDERS’ has had on them. Dawn Ewing, a current SOUL RYEDERS Board Member and Founding Board Member reflected, “The most amazing thing about SOUL RYEDERS is this really incredible community of people. You can’t walk into a SOUL RYEDERS event without thinking you are part of something special. You just feel connected.”

Brian Smith, the current Chairman of the Board, shared a recent resolution to form a Founders Advisory Council. He officially announced the formation of the council to include founding board members who

had served a minimum of one term on the board and contributed to the success of the organization. Enthusiastically, Smith declared that Laura DeVita, Mark Doran, Dawn Ewing, Pati Holmes, Bill Miller, Sandy Samberg, Emily Sharko and Kerri Winderman agreed to join the council to provide their expertise and strategic advice as an ongoing commitment to SOUL RYEDERS.

As the evening drew to a close, guests were invited to join the Giving Circle, an opportunity to pledge a minimum of $1,000 a year over three years, and become a part of a larger collective effort to provide long term growth for the organization. Through their contributions, Giving Circle Members affirm their commitment to empowering individuals affected by cancer and ensuring that no one faces their journey alone.

The evening exuded a warm and special feeling, reflecting the deep bonds and sense of purpose that unite our organization and its supporters. We were honored to bring together this community of enthusiastic philanthropists who create the sustainability of SOUL RYEDERS so that we may continue our mission to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

“SOUL RYEDERS is not going to cure cancer, it’s not going to make it go away. But what it is going to do is change the way people live with cancer,” ~ Bill Miller, former Chairman and Founding Board Member

U R N ED INTO A REALITY

TWe are a small organization that does BIG things and we knew that we could count on the support of our community to make this happen. The event fit with SOUL RYEDERS’ mission to educate our community about cancer and how A D R E A M

The idea of organizing our own fitness event was, for many years, a distant thought that was often discussed but the timing never seemed right. The history of our organization began in 2007 with a team of women from Rye participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in New York City. Our commitment to these types of events continued as we encouraged our community to participate in similar local fundraising walks and races.

In 2020, during the pandemic, SOUL RYEDERS board member and local Rye father Adrian Deen, created a his own half marathon called “April’s Run” in memory of his late wife, April, as a way to honor her memory and to raise awareness and funds for SOUL RYEDERS. April and her family were supported throughout their cancer experience by SOUL RYEDERS. Throughout his training and run, Adrian heard interest from many who would like to join him. This sparked the conversation that led to the creation of our Half Marathon & 5K.

fitness is good for general health and a powerful tool to use during and after cancer treatment. We also know the potential this event has for increased growth and expansion year after year due to its compelling message, its connection to SOUL RYEDERS’ beginnings through the Avon Walk, and ease of participation. The goal of the event was to raise awareness of our organization’s personalized support and resources, and attract participants, volunteers and spectators from well beyond our local borders.

From securing sponsorships to mapping out the breathtaking route, every detail of our inaugural event was meticulously planned. Banners and signs adorned with vibrant colors were displayed all across Rye, our neighboring towns and social media inviting runners of all ages and abilities to participate in the race for such a great cause.

After years in the making, on the beautiful Sunday morning of May 21, 2023 at Playland Park in Rye, NY our inaugural half marathon & 5K event took place. Over 1,100 participants gathered at the starting line; there were seasoned athletes, first-time runners, families pushing strollers, and, most importantly, those who have been impacted by cancer.

As a runner, I know how much goes into these events, and this inaugural race was flawless. Your team is incredible! I bet you have heard this a million times since Sundaywe all can’t wait to do it again!

Just wanted to write a quick thank you for all of your tireless work preparing for today’s event. It was truly an amazing day and a HUGE success. I heard over and over again from friends and neighbors how fun, well run, organized and impressive the event was. It was an honor to be a part of the “team.” At one point one of the fantastic policemen who was with me said, “Wow this must be a really close knit community.” He nailed it!

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR RACES SPONSORS!

“We ran today for all our loved ones fighting cancer and in memory of those who fought.”

Each one had their own reason for being there, but they were all united in their desire to support SOUL RYEDERS and the incredible work we do. Serenaded with the National Anthem by a local A cappella group, Rhythm on Rye, as the American Flag was hoisted, the crowd of thousands cheered as the horn blew to start the race.

We turned a dream into a reality. The awe-inspiring community support and overwhelming participation was incredibly uplifting and shared by everyone in attendance. We raised over $150K that went directly to funding our programs and personalized service for our clients and caregivers and ensure we can be there for them through some of the most difficult and challenging times of their lives.

We would like to thank our amazing co-chairs Emily Borell, Adrian Deen, Michelle Weiss, Libby Wildes and Milan Yokuty for all of their hard work and support.

“Congratulations on your inaugural race! All of the runners on our team who participated thought it was a huge success and hope to see many more years of your lovely race in Rye.”

A special shout out to the staff at White Plains Hospital for all of their amazing support in keeping our runners and walkers safe!

Peer Support Program

At SOUL RYEDERS, we continue to strive to find ways to refine and enhance how we connect with our clients. In our annual report last year, we shared with you the celebration of the 10 year anniversary of The Wig Exchange program, a service provided to those who are dealing with hair loss due to cancer treatment. Our volunteer Wig Advisors, who are cancer survivors themselves, approach each client with empathy, understanding and offer insight providing a truly invaluable experience.

As our overall programming expanded, we realized that not everyone who comes to us is in need of a wig and therefore would not have that same important component of experiential empathy, generally beyond the scope of what they receive from their health professionals, as they personally understand what is involved in dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Through our continued strategic planning efforts, the idea of a peer support initiative became our focus. We started researching other similar type programs and connected with Carolyn Taylor of Global Focus on Cancer. Her work in the area of Peer Mentorship focuses mainly on underserved communities in other countries but we were all excited to adapt this program and tailor it to our SOUL RYEDERS community.

Through the thoughtfulness and generosity of our incredible donors, we were able to secure the funds needed to make this vision a reality and the process to develop the program began. Meetings, trainings and surveys were conducted and after an extensive search, 8 volunteer peer mentors were selected and a pilot was launched.

Our goals for this initiative include:

y Supporting our clients emotional and mental well-being (anxiety, depression, & stress) as well as social functioning

y Helping clients to decrease feelings of isolation, encourage positive emotional states, and improve coping responses and behavior to improve general mental health

y Providing interactions to those

with similar experiences offering experiential empathy beyond the scope of health professionals

y Benefiting peer mentors themselves with enhanced feelings of competence and personal value

y Delivering emotional support and mentoring, provide advice and support by our staff clinical social worker, responsible for overseeing the program

We are grateful to Carolyn who has been a steadfast partner in getting this program off the ground and continues to be able to provide research and logistical insight since our launch.

We asked our volunteer peer mentors to share their thoughts on why they wanted to get involved. Here are their heart-warming stories:

Having gone through cancer myself and learning the necessity of support motivated me to want to give back and volunteer for the Peer Support Program. Being matched with a client has been a blessing and I am grateful to be able to offer support, hope and kindness to someone else during a challenging time in their lives.

I wanted to become a Peer Mentor because I am so grateful for my cancer survivorship, recognize the need, and want to give back a service that I did not have when I was diagnosed. It is so fulfilling to have a Mentee, as I experience in real-time the absolute need and positive impact peer mentorship has for an active cancer patient. The team at SOUL RYEDERS is so special and creating this opportunity for patients and survivors is just another example!

- Susan Romeo

SOUL RYEDERS was such a lifeline to me following my diagnosis. Whether I was taking a Yoga for Cancer class, enjoying a delicious hand-delivered meal, or connecting with a survivor, the support I received helped me and my family to feel less alone and overwhelmed. There is nothing quite like connecting with someone who has walked the path, and it’s awesome to be a part of a new offering that will help drive positive outcomes for others.
