NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Origins. After these thirteen years in which SorsiCorti has seen the way of making, seeing and interpreting Cinema evolve, we go back to the Origins. This complex term, that brings always new stories (the Myths of the Origin), takes us back to the primary interest of the Festival: short films. About ten years ago, when the Festival was just beginning, several distinguished film critics and experts, told me about the death of the short film. A type of cinema with no future (it reminds me of something …), a genre without a market and, dulcis in fundo, a format without reliable distributions. They invited us to focus on video clip, web series, or look for mixed forms between cinema, virtual reality, augmented reality … And we did it with great interest and curiosity from the audience and videomakers. But in the meantime, small masterpieces of short cinema flourished, unscrupulous directors were born devoted to the God of moving images, producers and distributors were born all over the world proud of the short film 5
NOTA DEL DIRETTORE ARTISTICO Origini. Dopo questi tredici anni in cui SorsiCorti ha visto evolversi il modo di fare Cinema, vederlo e interpretarlo, si torna alle Origini. Tale termine complesso e foriero di sempre nuove storie (i Miti dell’Origine), ci riporta al primario interesse del Festival: i cortometraggi. Circa dieci anni fa, quando il Festival era appena all’inizio, mi capitava di parlare con esimi critici ed esperti cinematografici, i quali mi dicevano che il cortometraggio era finito, o quanto meno morente. Un tipo di cinema che non aveva futuro (mi ricorda qualcosa…), un genere senza mercato e, dulcis in fundo, un formato privo di distribuzioni serie. “Puntate sul videoclip, sulle web series, oppure cercate forme di mescolanza tra cinema, realtà virtuale, realtà aumentata…” E lo abbiamo fatto con grande interesse e con discreti curiosità del pubblico e dei videomakers. Ma accanto a noi, fiorivano piccoli capolavori del cinema breve, nascevano registi spregiudicati devoti al Dio delle immagini in movimento, sorgevano produttori e

People who invested in a cinema “without market”. Extraordinary works and a reassuring freedom of expression made us fall in love a second time. After several “escapades” with new productions, our old friend, His Majesty “The Short Movie”, showed us that it was not dead. While we were looking for new languages, innovative multimedia forms of use, fashionable online platforms and captivating stories of docu-sci-fi-fiction-biotic-distopic-serial-interactive, we rediscovered the beauty of a simple story, of a well cared photograph, with careful and well-motivated images, the beauty of the commitment to put on a well-structured film set, with an authorial ambition, honest, humble, made of field work. On that field, never been as flourishing and fruitful as today, represented by the short film. So we are waiting for you on 10-11-12 May from 18.00 to 23.00 at Palazzo Steri for the XIII edition of SorsiCorti. Origins. 6
distributori in tutto il mondo fieri del corto che proponevano, a noi di SorsiCorti, intere liste di produzioni nuovissime e di alta qualità. Inizialmente dalla Russia, dalla Spagna, dalla Francia, poi dall’Asia, dall’Africa, dal Sud America. Gente che investiva in un cinema “senza mercato”. Opere straordinarie e di una rassicurante libertà espressiva ci hanno fatto innamorare una seconda volta. Dopo varie “scappatelle” con produzioni nuove, il nostro antico compagno di sempre, Sua Maestà il Corto, ci ha fatto vedere che non era morto. Mentre noi cercavamo nuovi linguaggi, innovative forme multimediali di fruizione, piattaforme on line alla moda e accattivanti storie che erano docu-sci-fi-fiction-biotic-distopic-serial-interattivi, abbiamo riscoperto la bellezza di una storia semplice, di un fotografia ben curata, di immagini attente e ben motivate, la bellezza dell’impegno di mettere su un set cinematografico ben strutturato, con una velleità autoriale, termine oggi forse un po’ desueto o peggio facilmente inflazionato, onesta, umile, fatta di lavoro sul campo. Su quel campo, mai stato così florido e fecondo come oggi, rappresentato dal cortometraggio. Per cui vi aspettiamo nei giorni 10-11-12 maggio dalle 18,00 alle 23,00 a Palazzo Steri per la XIII edizione di SorsiCorti. Origini.

Upon entering room 12, occupied by three sisters, she discovers that one of them has just turned one-hundred years old: there must be a birthday present somewhere… that will change their lives forever.

È una notte di luna piena. Un’infermiera cinica e brutale si aggira nei corridoi di una vecchia casa di riposo. Distribuisce i medicinali della buonanotte mentre arrotonda lo stipendio preparando bustine di pasticche da spacciare e rubando ai pazienti più indifesi. Odia quel lavoro, i vecchi, la vecchiaia. Quando entra nella stanza n.12, occupata da tre anziane sorelle, scopre che una delle tre ha compiuto cent’anni. Da qualche parte ci deve essere un regalo di compleanno. Solo su una cosa il suo cinismo le darà ragione: non esistono i buoni, solo i meno cattivi.

Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, hundreds of kilometres away from the mainland, Lampedusa has become the symbolic centre of the current Mediterranean migration ‘crisis’. While dealing with the ethical challenges of this global ‘crisis’, the islanders must also find responses to the local struggles of their isolated community at the periphery of Europe. CCÀ SEMU, "siamo qui", è il modo in cui gli abitanti di Lampedusa parlano del loro posto nel mondo con orgoglio e rassegnazione. Circondata dal Mar Mediterraneo, a centinaia di chilometri dalla terraferma, Lampedusa è diventata il centro simbolico dell'attuale crisi migratoria mediterranea. Despite of them walking deep into the wild, they can’t find any animals to hunt. Exhausted by the boorish demands of his traveling companion, Miguel enters the forest during the night, finding a strange monster that dwells there. The boy decides not to reveal the episode and hide the fear he begins to experience. Miguel is torn between his deepest fears and the desire to be a “real man” as dictated by his father, putting his own identity and nature in question. Sono stati diversi giorni di trekking per Miguel e suo padre. Nonostante camminino in profondità nella natura, non riescono a trovare animali da cacciare. Iku Manieva by Isaac Ruiz Gastélum Mexico | 2017 | Documentary | 7’30” ‘Iku Manieva’ is a short documentary filmed in the Sinaloa sierra, a mythical territory in Northwest Mexico historically controlled by the drug cartels and whose violent dispute has transformed entire communities into ghost towns. Narrated through the hopeful look of two children from the Sinaloa highlands – where the film unfolds – the story takes us into an idyllic landscape wrapped in a rare atmosphere of peace that constrasts deepply with the threatening presence of the narcos.

'Iku Manieva' è un breve documentario girato nella sinatraa sierra, un territorio mitico nel nordovest del Messico, storicamente controllato dai cartelli della droga e la cui violenta disputa ha trasformato intere comunità in città fantasma. Narrato dallo sguardo speranzoso di due bambini degli altopiani di Sinaloa – dove il film si svolge – la storia ci porta in un paesaggio idilliaco avvolto in una rara atmosfera di pace che contrasta con la presenza minacciosa dei narcos.

In Full Bloom by Maegan Houang USA | 2017 | Fiction | 10’39” In Full Bloom is a surrealist short film about overcoming the loss of a partner within the parameters of living as a female Vietnamese immigrant. After her husband’s death, Cecile becomes an agoraphobic hoarder, paradoxically practicing what she loves – gardening – indoors without the help of direct sunlight. She orders worms to grow a rare flower. Though they help the flower grow, the development comes at a price when the worms create a black hole that absorbs everything she cherishes. In Full Bloom è un cortometraggio surrealista sul superamento della perdita di un partner all'interno dei parametri di vita di una donna vietnamita immigrata. Dopo la morte di suo marito, Cecile diventa un accaparratore agorafobico, praticando paradossalmente ciò che ama – il giardinaggio – in casa senza l'aiuto della luce solare diretta. Ordina ai vermi di coltivare un fiore raro. Sebbene aiutino il fiore a crescere, lo sviluppo ha un prezzo quando i vermi creano un buco nero che assorbe tutto ciò che ama. 27

Prende in prestito la costosa giacca del suo amico e si avvicina a lei, offrendo di mostrarle la strada. Si conoscono, e Amina invita Camilo alla festa. Alla fine un tizio alla festa scambia la giacca di Camilo per la sua... 28

The intrusion of the faraway, unknown space into our immediate reality inevitably leads to friction between the "inner" and the "outer", private and public, intimate and foreign. This encounter creates the chaotic, fragmented reality; the space we inhabit sometimes becomes our enemy space, uninhabitable. Disoriented, deterritorialized, we become strangers at home, a guest in our household. L'intrusione dello spazio lontano e sconosciuto nella nostra realtà immediata porta inevitabilmente all'attrito tra "interiore" e "esterno", privato e pubblico, intimo e straniero. Questo incontro crea la realtà caotica e frammentata; lo spazio che abitiamo a volte diventa il nostro spazio nemico, inabitabile. Disorientati, deterritorializzati, diventiamo estranei in casa, ospiti nella nostra famiglia.

After hours of walking, the stretcher-bearers Pellecchia and Duccio mutiny for the tiredness and force the leader Armando Mastrosimone and the manager Ciccio Frangipane to stop in a house nearby to try to rest. But just as he’s officiating the funeral of the deceased, the group is surprised by a strange couple of individuals...

KIMUAK The KIMUAK program, supported by the Basque Government's Department of Culture through Etxepare Basque Institute, and the Basque Film Archive, was created in 1998 with the aim of promoting and distributing Basque short films internationally. Every year Kimuak selects the best short films shot in Basque and having the collaboration of Basque technicians and actors. The selected shorts are gathered in a catalogue published on the label Kimuak, in order to promote and distribute them. The catalogue is sent to the major festivals and audiovisual events, so the new selection is accessible to an international audience. SorsiCorti has had the good fortune to meet Kimuak since the first editions and SorsiCorti 13 offers out of competition a selection from the 2017 and 2018 catalogue. 56

Andrea Grasselli was born in Brescia in 1986; he live and work between Turin, Milan, Bologna, Rome and Brescia. Andrea studied Cinema at the Bologna's DAMS, where he learned the theories of Cinema and he followed workshops on the technics and languages of Audiovisual. At the same time he begun to work in shortmovies, documentaries, videoclip and commercials productions. In 2011 he moved to Piemonte and he graduated as "Technician for Audiovisual Production", than he moved to Turin, where he keeps working for many Italian and international movies, documentaries and commercials. Meanwhile, he developed and produced many documentary of his own. 63 Andrea Grasselli è nato a Brescia nel 1986, vive e lavora tra Torino, Milano, Bologna, Roma e Brescia. Inizia a studiare Cinema al DAMS di Bologna, formandosi dal punto di vista teorico e critico; segue inoltre numerosi corsi e laboratori sui linguaggi e sulle tecniche audiovisive, tra cui presso la scuola Organica di Cinematografia. Parallelamente inizia a intraprendere un percorso pratico e professionale delle tecniche cinematografiche lavorando in numerosi set di cortometraggi, documentari, videoclip e pubblicità. Nel 2011 si trasferisce in Piemonte. Dopo il Diploma di specializzazione in “Tecnico di produzione Audio Video” presso l'APM di Saluzzo (Cuneo), inizia un importante percorso professionale a Torino che gli permette di lavorare in progetti cinematografici, pubblicitari e documentari di carattere nazionale e di collaborare con alcuni dei principali esponenti del cinema contemporaneo italiano e internazionale. Parallelamente lavora come video-maker, conducendo una ricerca personale teorica e pratica sui linguaggi degli audiovisivi, producendo e realizzando numerosi documentari, pubblicità, video d'arte, e videoclip. Nel 2013 fonda Oṃ Video, con Giorgio Affanni co-autore e co-produttore. Oṃ Video attraverso la realizzazione di documentari è particolarmente interessata al rapporto dell'uomo con la natura, con le sue radici culturali

He practices the profession of psychologist, trainer and psychotherapist. He has made several documentaries including "The man who looked like a taxi" (2012) documentary on the life of a rickshaw driver in Madagascar - winner of the first prize "mobile shorts" at the Siciliambiente Festival, in competition at the "SoleLuna festival. And "Effatà Road" (2018) which describes the migratory phenomenon in an unusual and alternative form. 4 migrants Martino Lo Cascio è nato nel 1966 a Palermo, dove vive. Autore e regista di documentari e opere teatrali – per cui è stato più volte premiato. Esercita la professione di psicologo, formatore e psicoterapeuta. Ha realizzato vari documentari tra cui “L’uomo che sembrava un taxi” (2012), documentario sulla vita di un guidatore di risciò in Madagascar – vincitore del primo premio “corti mobili” al Festival Siciliambiente, in concorso al “SoleLuna festival. Published - the novel "The Garden of Remembrance - The 779 days of the seizure of Matteo" (Mesogea 2017). From the book a monologue has been extracted which was represented at the Teatro Biondo in Palermo and a puppet show. With the novel he won the Targa Prestigiacomo in the "Arenella Award - City of Palermo" and "The Leopard of Legality 2018". He is a founding member and President of the cultural association "Nottedoro" which organized the first international lullabies festival and tries to harmonize social work and artistic languages.

Dal libro è stato estratto un monologo che è stato rappresentato al Teatro Biondo di Palermo e uno spettacolo di pupi. Tatiana Lo Iacono has a degree in architecture and has a ten-year experience in the field of organization and cultural enhancement, having obtained a master's degree from the Faculty of Architecture of Palermo in Communication of Cultural Heritage, Museum and Territory. She has worked in the world of contemporary art and since the first edition she has been part of the Sicilia Queer filmfest team as programmer, curator of the international Queer Short competition, organizational director (from the second edition) and president (from the third edition). She has worked internationally (Brussels – Argos / Center for Art & Media; Venice – Gallery A + A / Slovenian Public Center for Contemporary Art; Bordeaux – TNT Théâtre) and collaborated with the National Film Foundation Tatiana Lo Iacono è laureata in architettura e vanta un’esperienza decennale nell’ambito dell’organizzazione e della valorizzazione culturale, avendo conseguito un master presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Palermo in Comunicazione dei Beni Culturali, Museali e del Territorio. She has been managing the SudTitles association since its birth as directress and manageress of the cultural projects. She has worked with Doc.it in the promotion of IDS held in Palermo in May 2014, in September 2015 and 2016. From February to July 2015 she collaborated with the Experimental Center of Cinematography, National Film School based in Palermo. She was chairwoman of the Coordination of Film Festivals of the Sicilian Region, from 2014 to 2016. He collaborated with the Goethe-Institut in the two-year period 2017-2018, in the development and management of the project – The Country of Festivals – which has aimed at involving some cultural festivals (cinema, literature, street art, electronic music, street theater) that take place in southern Italy, with the purpose of exchanging and building a network. From 2017 to 2018 he attended the Course for Cultural Project Managers - CRPC - at the Fitzcarraldo Foundation in Turin. Today she collaborates with two other film festivals: Efebo D’Oro and Salina Doc Fest. 68

Ha ricoperto l’incarico di presidente del Coordinamento dei Festival del Cinema della Regione Sicilia, dal 2014 al 2016. Ha collaborato con il Goethe-Institut nel biennio 2017-2018, nello sviluppo e nella gestione del progetto – Il Paese dei Festival – che ha avuto lo scopo di coinvolgere alcuni Festival culturali (cinematografici, letterari, di street art, musica elettronica, teatro di strada) che hanno luogo nel sud Italia, con finalità di scambio e costruzione di una rete. Dal 2017 al 2018 ha seguito il Corso per Responsabili di Progetti Culturali – CRPC – presso la Fondazione Fitzcarraldo di Torino. Ad oggi collabora con altri due festival cinematografici: Efebo D’Oro e Salina Doc Fest.

Maryam tries to save him, but she just decides to stop helping and stand and watch her husband’s death. After she makes sure her husband is dead, gathered her stuff and goes out with her child. During the day, she pretends her husband is got disappeared and she does not have any news.

In un angolo della casa, il marito di Maryam fa sollevamento pesi. All’improvviso, il peso cade sulla sua gola e lo mette tra la vita e la morte. Maryam tenta di salvarlo, ma decide solo di smettere di aiutarlo e stare in piedi a guardare il marito morire. Dopo essersi assicurata che suo marito sia morto, raccoglie le sue cose e se ne va con suo figlio. Durante la giornata, lei finge che suo marito sia scomparso e lei non ne abbia notizie.

In Malonno, Camonica Valley, the assembly of the Triduo machine is still taking place today. Original of 1771, the machine is composed of wooden elements and candles. Today religious value has almost completely replaced by social and cultural value. The film returns the intricate work performed by machine builders with an observational approach. The ritual is characterized by a “concrete” part of the construction of the machine, with scaffolding, innocent pipes, ropes, pulleys, stairs and on the other it has a contemplative aspect of the machine and memorial of the dead.

A Malonno, in Valle Camonica, ancora oggi avviene il rito del montaggio della macchina del Triduo. Originale del 1771 la macchina è composta da elementi lignei e candele. Oggi al valore religioso, si è quasi interamente sostituito il valore sociale e culturale. Il film restituisce l’intricato lavoro eseguito dai montatori della macchina con un approccio osservativo. ll rituale è caratterizzato da una parte “concreta” di costruzione della macchina, con ponteggi, tubi innocenti, funi, carrucole, scale e dall’altra possiede un aspetto contemplativo della macchina e commemorativo dei defunti.
