An eleventh edition inspired by the Magritte’s pipe that is not a pipe, challenging the common way of looking at reality and anticipating new artistic instances. In this XI edition, SorsiCorti investigates what is no longer cinema, what has never been and what may become. The new forms of fruition and production of audiovisuals will be hosted at the Festival and will find the attention we think they deserve: machinima, video-installation, augmented reality (AD), digital-storytelling ... In addition to the usual projection of international short films in competition, and to the consolidated projection of feature films “out of competition” we will host and promote experimental attempts (sometime a little bit con-fused) to bring the noncinema to cinema ... Una undicesima edizione ispirata alla pipa che non è una pipa di Magritte, che sfida il modo comune di guardare la realtà e anticipa nuove istanze artistiche. In questa XI edizione SorsiCorti indaga su cosa non è più cinema, cosa non lo è mai stato e cosa forse lo diventerà da grande. Le nuove forme di fruizione e di produzione degli audiovisivi saranno ospitate nel Festival e troveranno quella cittadinanza che noi pensiamo meritino: machinima, videoinstallazioni, realtà aumentata, digital-storytelling… Oltre alla consueta proiezione dei cortometraggi internazionali in concorso, alla ormai consolidata proiezione di lungometraggi fuori concorso, ospiteremo e promuoveremo tentativi sperimentali (anche un po’ con-fusi di media) di portare al cinema il non-cinema…

I asked my teeth if they’ll withstand a drink, says the main character in “20 Kicks”. He lives in a world, in which exchange system is slaps and fists. In this way the film is raising the question of the price we pay for the small pleasures, and the sacrifices we make, to attain true happiness. Ho chiesto ai miei denti se sopportano una bevanda, dice il personaggio principale di “20 Kicks”, che vive in un mondo in cui il sistema di scambio è schiaffi e pugni, in questo modo il film solleva la questione del prezzo che paghiamo per piccoli piaceri e i sacrifici che facciamo, per ottenere una vera felicità. 12

aranceri : Battle of oranges by Erasmus Talbot Sweden | 2016 | Documetario | 22’47” | section Irvos | May 18 The “Battle of the Oranges” is a unique event that is part of a yearly historic carnival taking place in Ivrea, north Italy. Celebrating the 12th Century revolt of the people against a local tyrant, for three days the main squares in the old town become a temporary battleground for thousands of participants representing two opposing sides. The Aranceri (orange throwers), represent the townspeople, against the Aranceri Carri da Getto (orange throwers on carts), who represent the tyrant’s guards. The film follows three people from Ivrea. The protagonists were chosen for their unique personalities, stories and their love for the orange battle.

La “Battaglia delle Arance” è un evento unico che fa parte d’annuale festività di carnevale che si svolge a Ivrea, nel nord Italia. Celebra la rivolta del XII secolo contro un tiranno locale e per tre giorni le piazze principali del centro storico diventano un campo di battaglia per migliaia di partecipanti in rappresentanza delle due opposte fazioni. Gli Aranceri (raccoglitori di arance) rappresentano i cittadini, contro gli Aranceri su Carri da Getto che rappresentano le guardie del tiranno. Il film segue tre persone provenienti da Ivrea. I protagonisti sono stati scelti per le loro personalità uniche, storie e la loro passione per la battaglia delle arance.

In a waiting room of an emergency room, he is waiting for his mother who is getting examined some facial injuries. With some candy in his hands and a terrible idea in his mind, Gionatan decide to run away. His home is in the Ponte di Nona’s area, a particular suburb of Rome, where the bright colours of the buildings, contrast with the discomfort around them, where the little Gionatan find Secco, a slaker criminal, and he persuades him to follow him, sayng that he saw some men beating up his little brother. Gionatan ha nove anni e gli occhi di un adulto. In una sala d’aspetto di un pronto soccorso, attende che sua madre si faccia medicare delle vecchie ferite al volto. Di nascosto, la sente mentire su come se le è procurate. Con delle caramelle in mano ed una terribile idea in testa in testa, Gionatan decide di scappare.

Despite of her eighty years, Aimée, French-born Sicilian by adoption, has been fighting for years for a right waste management at Stromboli. In this very small island near Sicily, it’s clear as the goodwill of the citizens could permit to realize a proper waste separation and home composting, instead of expensive shipping. On the contrary, the local government prefers creating the waste problem for rising funds. Her little local story becomes emblematic for the rest of Italy: garbage crisis, hampered environmentalists, corrupted politicians. Nonostante i suoi ottant’anni, Aimée, francese di nascita, siciliana d’adozione, si batte da anni per una corretta gestione dei rifiuti a Stromboli. In questa piccola isola siciliana è chiaro come la buona volontà dei cittadini potrebbe permettere di realizzare una raccolta differenziata e il corretto compostaggio domestico, abbattendo i costi del trasporto. Al contrario, l’amministrazione locale preferisce creare il problema dei rifiuti per ottenere più fondi. La sua piccola storia locale diventa emblematica per il resto d’Italia: l’emergenza rifiuti, la denuncia da parte degli ambientalisti, la corruzione dei politici.

Si può rubare la giovinezza a una ragazza? Hind è una ragazza marocchina di 20 che lavora presso la casa di un’anziana signora. L’idea tematica del cortometraggio è quella di raccontare una realtà sociale, la comunità delle ragazze straniere, residenti in Italia, che lavorano, spesso, come badanti presso le case delle persone anziane. Queste ragazze, talvolta molto giovani, restando a contatto con le persone molto avanti d’età, assimilano gli stessi ritmi, svolgono le stesse funzioni, perdendo così la loro giovinezza.

The "foam-beater" (boaster) Hanspeter throws an eye after an addleheaded Annemarie, but she just "shows him the bird" (indicates that he is chuckoo). So he has to "jump over his shadow" (take the plunge) and get a foot in her door. Amusement for all proverb fans who love to make whoopee, gaze into the pale blue yonder, or get to the point. Le espressioni idiomatiche guarniscono la nostra lingua, ma spesso sono difficili da tradurre. Questa comedy ci aiuta a comprenderle e ci racconta la storia di due vicini che si innamorano. Il “frullino” (fanfarone) Hanspeter lancia un’occhiata a Annemarie dal cervello di gallina, ma lei gli mostra l’uccello (significa che a lui manca una rotella). Così lui finisce per “saltare sopra la sua ombra” (fare il grande passo) e mette piede in casa sua. Wirrwarr is a one minute, one second and one frame celebration of one hundred years of Dada. Animated sequences are linked through key words with emphasis on the historical and philosophical background of Dada as a rebellious art movement. Sign language is used to communicate the letters d and a while the open hand gesture towards the end of the film signals triumph. The main focus in this production lies on automatic, spontaneous and arbitrary approaches in experimental filmmaking. Wirrwarr è la celebrazione in un minuto, un secondo e un frame dei cento anni di Dada. Le sequenze animate sono collegate tramite parole chiave con l’accento sullo sfondo storico e filosofico di Dada come movimento artistico di ribellione. Il linguaggio dei segni è usato per comunicare le lettere “d” e “a” mentre verso la fine del film il gesto a mano aperta diviene un segno di trionfo. L’obiettivo principale di questa produzione è l’approccio automatico, spontaneo e arbitrario del cinema sperimentale.

Creating a bridge between Psychology and Medicine and Cinema is the main objective of this day dedicated to the screening of the Spanish animated drama film Arrugas (Wrinkles), directed by Ignacio Ferreras and based on the graphic novel with the same title by Paco Roca. Worlds that can talk to each other. The background is the drama of Alzheimer’s disease and the whole universe that revolves around it. The round table, which precedes the film, will propose to the public a dialogue between subjects involved in this drama. They will deal with the symbolic, clinical, psychological and social aspects of Alzheimer’s, always with an eye directed at the cinema and what this film wants to say poetically, letting science be positively infected by the suggestion that Cinema offers. The film presents old age as an inevitable stage of life and tells of deep tricks, adventurous exploits and memories sculpted in such vivid memories that we have been abducted in the contemplation of this evocative beauty. Creare un ponte tra la Psicologia e la Medicina e il Cinema è l’obiettivo principale di questa giornata dedicata alla proiezione del film Arrugas / Rughe di I. Ferreres, tratto dall’omonimo graphic novel di Paco Roca. Mondi che possono dialogare. Lo sfondo è quello del dramma del morbo di Alzheimer e di tutto l’universo che intorno ad adesso ruota. La tavola rotonda, che anticipa il film, proporrà al pubblico un dialogo tra soggetti che di questo dramma si occupano. Essi affronteranno gli aspetti simbolici, clinici, psicologici e sociali dell’Alzheimer sempre con un occhio indirizzato al cinema e a ciò che questo film vuole poeticamente narrare, lasciando che la scienza venga positivamente contagiata dal suggerimento che il Cinema offre. Il film che presenta la vecchiaia come fase della vita inevitabile, racconta di profondi struggimenti, exploit avventurosi e ricordi scolpiti nella memoria talmente vividi da lasciare rapiti nella contemplazione di tale bellezza evocativa.

Arrugas tells the adventures of Emilio and Miguel, two elderly people who are friends in a geriatric residence. Emilio, who arrives in an early state of Alzheimer’s, will be helped by Miguel and other comrades not to end up at the much-feared top floor of the institute, where he is recruited who has lost the reason and can no longer provide for himself. Their piano suffers from comedy and big tendencies of tenderness to the otherwise tedious daily life of the residence, where for many the life seems to be over, but for them it is starting again. 76

Arrugas – Rughe narra le avventure di Emilio e Miguel, due anziani che stringono amicizia in una residenza geriatrica. Emilio, che arriva in uno stato iniziale di Alzheimer, verrà aiutato da Miguel e altri compagni a non finire al tanto temuto ultimo piano dell’istituto, dove viene recluso chi ha perso la ragione e non può più provvedere a se stesso. Il loro piano tinge di commedia e grandi dosi di tenerezza la quotidianità altrimenti tediosa della residenza, dove per molti la vita sembra ormai finita, ma per loro invece sta iniziando di nuovo. 77

Chiara Agnello was born in Palermo, after having attained an honors degree in a “History and criticism” in 1998 at the University of Siena, she began working in the audio visual industry covering a variety of roles in that field, always as part of the directing department. In 2001 she moved to Rome and after a few years, she began his career as a casting director for film and television dramas, while simultaneously continuing her path as a director making short films, commercials and music videos.
Chiara Agnello è nata a Palermo, dopo aver conseguito la laurea in “Storia e critica” nel 1998 all’Università di Siena, ha iniziato a lavorare con diverse mansioni di dirigenza nell’industria audiovisiva. Nel 2001 si trasferisce a Roma per intraprendere la carriera di regista di casting per film e fiction televisive e continuare il suo percorso come regista di cortometraggi, spot e video musicali.

george todria New Visions Award Jury
George Todria, a Georgian American film-maker, was born in 1982. He grew up and studied in New York and later graduated film school at N.U.C.T in Cinecittà Studios in Rome, Italy. Since then he has worked as an assistant director on various American and European projects. So far he has directed three short films, the last of which, Lost Village, has won the 2016 edition of SorsiCorti and was in competition at Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and a winner of awards in various film festivals around the world. In 2013, along with three Georgian filmmakers, he founded the production company Archanda Films. Lost Village won in 2016 the festival SorsiCorti as best experimental short film 82

George Todria è un regista georgiano-americano, nato nel 1982. È cresciuto e ha studiato a New York per poi frequentare a Roma la scuola di cinema N.U.C.T negli studi di Cinecittà. Da allora ha lavorato come assistente alla regia su vari progetti americani ed europei. Finora ha diretto tre cortometraggi, l’ultimo dei quali, Lost Village, ha vinto l’edizione 2016 di SorsiCorti ed è stato in concorso al Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival e vincitore di premi in diversi festival cinematografici in tutto il mondo. Nel 2013, insieme a tre registi georgiani, fonda la società di produzione Archanda Films. Con il corto Lost Village ha vinto l’edizione 2016 di SorsiCorti come miglior corto sperimentale.

Dario Di Bernardi, agronomo ed enologo, lavora da oltre 25 anni presso l’Istituto della Vite e del Vino di Sicilia. Ha cominciato lavorando tra i vivai, i vigneti e la cantina sperimentale. Nel 2007 cura la Guida dei Vini di Sicilia che associa le etichette del vino a un racconto del territorio inteso nella sua ricchezza culturale e antropologica. Ha collaborato alla realizzazione della “Carta dei Territori dei Vini di Sicilia” in cui venivano accostati attrattori agroalimentari con beni culturali e paesaggistici della Sicilia. Da alcuni anni si occupa di valorizzazione dei territori dei vini di Sicilia, di sviluppo rurale e di tutoraggio per start up e formazione di guide nell’ambito enoturistico. 83
Dario Di Bernardi, agronomist and oenologist, has been working for over 25 years at the Institute of Viticulture and Wine in Sicily (irvos). He started working among the nurseries, the vineyards and the experimental wine cellar. In 2007 he cares for the Sicilia Wine Guide that associates the wine labels with a land narrative in its cultural and anthropological wealth. He collaborated on the creation of the “Sicily’s Wines Land Register”, where agro-food attractants with cultural and landscape heritage in Sicily were approached. For some years he has been working on taking value to the Sicilian wine territories, rural development and tutoring for start-up and training guides on wine tourism.

At school he serves as “assistant to the autonomy and communication”. He also carries out free-lance activities by carrying out social integration efforts and enhancing autonomy for autistic people.

If he had no dialogues he managed to compose an eloquent mosaic of images, lights and sounds with a strong emotional and narrative impact. Lost Village trasporta lo spettatore all’interno di un’atmosfera rarefatta utilizzando un linguaggio essenziale ma ricco di tensione. Se pur privo di dialoghi è riuscito a comporre un eloquente mosaico di immagini, luci e suoni dal forte impatto emotivo e narrativo.
