What is your go-to order on the Sópers menu?
For me, I would have to say my go-to food is avocado, smoked salmon and eggs on toast. Yes it is nothing fancy, but it’s very tasty and sustains my energy levels for a long time. I am also prone to a cheese and ham panini.
What does a typical day in the life at Sópers look like to you?
It varies. The great thing about working at Sópers is half the time it doesn’t feel like I’m stuck in a workplace. I will be either training my clients in the gym, running group exercise classes in the studios or setting up workout plans for my clients. I also do the general gym maintenance such as cleaning, tidying and checking for faulty equipment.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Maybe I should be Prime Minister. Surely I can’t make things worse than they have been. Haha! Seriously, it’s difficult to say. I love what I do, but I know there is a natural evolution from being a PT as I get older. Maybe I’ll look into doing physiotherapy. I honestly don’t know yet. One step at a time I guess. As my old mentor said, “learn to walk before you run.”
When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a police officer. I actually did achieve that dream a couple of years ago, but realised dreams aren’t always as good as they seem.
Whats the best place you have travelled to?
Vietnam. Just an incredible country full of amazing scenery, lovely people and incredible history. Also Ho Chi Minh.
Whats the most exciting part of my job?
Hearing a client of mine tell me what a positive impact my service has made on their life.
Where did you work before Sópers House?
I worked at the Gym Group in Tottenham Hale for 3 months, but before that I was a Police officer in the Metropolitan Police for 2 years.
MADELINE IS CHASING ARTWORK
How do you relax and unwind after work?
I’m a bit of a gamer, so I usually get home and play some video games. I also keep up with the current TV show trends.
What app do you use the most on your phone?
What is your biggest accomplishment this month?
Seeing one of my clients achieve something that they thought was impossible and, in fact, far surpassing this barrier they had.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced this month?
Dealing with school holidays as a PT is always tough, as clients go on holiday, etc. So maintaining a consistent workload during a half term/term holiday period is a challenge.
Youtube. I’m an addict! I’ll watch anything that revolves around Tottenham, news and the Ukraine war. I am well up to date because of Youtube.
What habit are you trying to get into (or get out of)?
I probably need to get off my PC. Would I say I’ve tried? No! Because I love it!

MEET:
MarkFORMER INTERNATIONAL ATHLETE MARK FINDLAY JOINS US FOR A BRIEF Q&A...
Regularly seen in the gym here at Sópers House, training his clients hard, Mark Findlay has had an amazing track and field career and has represented England. He now coaches elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts and has clients in TV and radio too. Here he is talking with Digital Marketing Assistant, Madeline Wells.
Who were your idols growing up?
My idol growing up was Linford Christie (Olympic champion) who ended up coaching me in 2008.

What would you consider to be the greatest achievement in your career?
Greatest achievement to date would be being ranked Top 3 in Europe over 60 metres and being selected for my first Senior major championship the World Indoor Championships in Moscow, 2006. Winning European medals through u17/u20 and u23 level are all special to me, as well as being a multi-national finalist and medalist.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
My biggest inspirations are Micheal Jordan, Tim Grover who was his Strength and Conditioning coach, as well as the late Kobe Bryant, who I actually named my son after. All three of these guys taught me about having a winner’s mindset and the sacrifices that have to be made to be a success. Daily Thompson was a massive inspiration to me also, as he was the first Athlete, I knew of that won every single championship going.
It’s every kids dream to represent their country. What is it like representing England?
Representing your country is an honour and a main aim for most athletes. I represented England and Great Britain from 16/17 years old and it was that experience that made me realise that track and f ield was the career I wanted to pursue.
Top: Dane Scarlett, Spurs.

Centre: Karlan Grant, West Brom, Nathanial Chalobah, Fulham, Trevoh Chalobah, Chelsea
Bottom: Kano and Bashy, both are rappers and actors, appearing in the Netflix show Top Boy.

What habit are you trying to get into (or get out of)?
Habits I’m trying to get out of is being so bloody competitive! I’m getting old I must let it go now… I mean it could be anything, bowling – anything, it’s like I have to win (and I’m sore loser, I’ll be the first to admit!).
How do you like to relax and unwind after your workday?
After a long workday I would say, in an ideal world I would like to relax, chill out, listen to a podcast or watch a film or the football, but having 6-year-old twins waiting at home means that doesn’t happen a lot of the time!!
What app do you use the most on your phone?
The app I use the most I would have to say is Instagram. I’m actually trying to not use it as much, (when not for work purposes) as sometimes I end up scrolling through and looking at complete nonsense!
What is it that you do now?
After retiring from track and field in 2012 I started my own performance and personal training company (Findlays Fitness & Performance). Working with elite sports people and fitness enthusiasts. My clientele ranges from footballers, boxers, mixed martial artists, track and field athletes, to clients from TV and radio, music artists, actors and actresses.

Over the last few months, I’ve based myself here at Sópers House and I have to say it’s been a dream. I’m really enjoying my time here and most of all my clients are loving it here too.
I love my job and I love helping people to achieve their goals and objectives. I have a few more projects in the pipeline, one being a new company to help more people achieve greatness – so look out for that!
What do you like to do outside work?
My son plays academy football, so watching him play I gotta say, is one of my favourite things to do away from work – as well as spending time with my young twins.
Also, I love boxing. I found it late in life, but fell in love with it to the point I even had a couple of white collar fights, which luckily I won!
Training for me is a lifestyle also, so I try to train 4–5 days a week.

Ladies’
Alex is a yoga and mindfulness teacher (some of you may even recognise Alex as a yoga teacher at Sópers Studios). She is trained in mindfulness and also works as a busy City lawyer for a large bank where she co-leads a Mindfulness and Meditation Community. She provides daily mindfulness and meditation sessions to employees, as well as introductory mindfulness sessions for teams.

Alex’s talk is ‘Introduction to Mindfulness and Meditation’. This will cover:
• What mindfulness and meditation is all about
• Benefits of a consistent mindfulness meditation practice that can reduce stress and improve concentration, self-awareness and creativity
• Some of the misconceptions around mindfulness and meditation, including those, which typically put people off trying (or sticking with) meditation
• Common challenges that you may experience and advice on how to overcome these.
Plus there will be a chance to experience mindfulness for yourself with a short guided practice!
To book a ticket for our next networking event, please contact events@sopershouse.co.uk
For those who are interested in learning more after this talk, Alex will also be offering a 4 week mindfulness-based course here at Sópers House on Monday evenings in January. The course will include a variety of different meditations, as well as tips for leading a more mindful life. With the intention of supporting you to establish a consistent mindfulness habit, to help you to become more present in your life and work, rather
than overly caught up in your thoughts. The course will also incorporate some calming breathwork techniques to support relaxation and aid sleep.

There are limited places available on the January course, so book early to avoid disappointment. For further information or to book your place, please contact Alex on omandoms@gmail.com or via Instagram @om_and_oms

BED TIME TALKING
Andrew Doody talks sleeping positions, beds, matresses and how these can affect your back.

People spend about a third of their lives in bed, so it’s vitally important to get it right when it comes to back health. Let’s split this into two sections, sleeping position, and beds themselves.
So firstly sleeping position, and before I even start suggesting positions themselves, let’s address a couple of things. Firstly, I want you to be comfortable, a good night’s sleep, waking up feeling relaxed and not in pain is the most important thing. If any of these positions cause issues don’t persevere, let me know and we’ll suggest something else.
Secondly, I know it’s not always possible to control what position you get into once you go to sleep. However this is where perseverance does come in, if you keep trying, you do tend to start to adapt over a week or two. Pillows are always a good ally, to stop you rolling one way or the other.
So here’s some positional tips that can help:
1. The classic, lying on your back. Everything is aligned and the weight is evenly distributed left and right. This doesn’t suit everyone though, some people don’t feel as ‘nested’ as other positions so struggle to get to sleep on their backs. Also snorers may find this exacerbates the problem.
For people that do like back sleeping though it’s definitely worth adding a pillow under your knees. It loosens the hamstrings a little and takes some pressure off the lumbar lordosis.
2. The foetal position. Lying on your side with your knees up a little. This is a fairly intuitive position to get into if your have lumbar disc issues as it slightly flexes the low back and opens up the gaps in the facet joints.
Again, a good tip in this position is to use a pillow, however this time put it in between your knees. This stop your top leg
‘PEOPLE SPEND ABOUT A THIRD OF THEIR LIVES IN BED, SO IT’S VITALLY IMPORTANT TO GET IT RIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO BACK HEALTH’
dropping forward and rotating the low back. It also aligns your hips and pelvis better, and feels more comfortable on the upper knee.
Try and swap sides from time to time if lying in the foetal position.
3. Face down. I normally tell people to avoid this position if at all possible, it’s usually quite problematic for the neck as well as the low back, but if absolutely nothing else is possible, reach for that extra pillow again and put it under your low stomach and upper pelvis to take the pressure off the low back. This is a good idea if you’re having a massage too. Front lying needs a much flatter pillow (or even no pillow) under the head too.
Secondly then, the beds themselves, and goodness me, where to start? Theres so many different opinions, so here’s mine. Spend some time and effort (and dare I say money) choosing a bed/ mattress. People seem happy to spend

thirty times or more on a car than a mattress, remember, a third of your life!
It’s really difficult to choose a mattress on a twenty minute trip to the bed store, so really take your time, spend an afternoon there, take your shoes off, try different sleeping positions, not just lying on your back! Do your research before you go, but make sure the review sites you look at aren’t secretly run by a bed company, or affiliated to one.
Try not to be seduced by softness. Lots of people jot down the name of a mattress they’ve found comfortable in a hotel, and while this can sometimes be a good indicator, remember hotels buy mattresses to give you a couple of nights feeling like you were sleeping on a cloud, but these mattresses are usually not supportive enough to be using full time, especially if you have low back issues, which can be aggravated over weeks and months. Often the mattress in a bigger hotel chain is not available to buy for the public anyway as they are specifically manufactured to different standards for hotels.
A fairly firm mattress is usually a good idea, perhaps with a shallow inbuilt topper. This can give you the support you need for your low back while the topper takes the pressure off bony prominences and allows shoulders and hips of side sleepers to sink in a little. I suggested a built in topper as they are usually better segmented and don’t allow stuffing to move around and bunch up as much. However removable toppers do give you more scope to adapt by removing it if needed, and also allow you to flip the mattress.
Mattresses that are fully stuffed as well as sprung are good and supportive, and price can be a good indicator, about £1500 for a king size mattress is not excessive. While we’re talking about price, beware of anything that seems too good to be true. ‘Winning awards’ as a mattress needs carification as to which award, and who’s giving it!
Memory foam mattresses seem to split opinion lots in my experience, some patients swear by them, quite a few more seem not to get on with them. What I will come back to though is price, if you’re set on a memory foam mattress you need the better quality, so it doesn’t start to develop a permanent dip where you lie. It’s all about density which is measured in pounds of pressure per cubic square foot. More is normally more expensive and better quality, but is also more supportive and feels harder.
There can be a problem with memory foam mattresses feeling too hot as well, although many of the better brands have addressed this somewhat, and many memory foam mattresses have become hybrids anyway so not just 100% foam any more.
Mattresses should be changed about every 8 years, but you can keep the same bed base of course as long as its not damaged. Divans especially can have pretty thin wood tops which can crack or bow so check it carefully.
Speaking of bases, my opinion is always that the mattress is there to provide the
give/support so a platform base is best. If the base is sprung, the whole mattress will start to fold which is usually not what they’re designed to do. A slatted base is slightly better than a fully sprung one, but still not as good as a solid base.
Finally I should mention pillows, and this is even more subjective to the person, and especially to any neck/upper back/ shoulder girdle conditions they may have. As a rule of thumb (and this is painting with a very broad brush) people seem to usually have too much pillow depth more often than too little. One medium depth pillow is usually best if you don’t have any specific issues. I find feather works well as you can punch and mould it to the right height and shape, so there is some support under your neck too which is important, but that’s very much a personal preference. I rarely see anyone who gets on well with memory foam pillows (there are the odd one or two) or sprung pillows.
The price of a good feather pillow is probably about £50, but as I said right at the start, I want you to not only be in a good position, but also comfortable and pain free during the night and the next day, so if the £5 pillow works that’s fine. Don’t forget most pillows can be laundered regularly which may give (especially feather pillows) some of their volume back.
If you are experiencing neck pain though, get your neck examined and treated first and ask your osteopath what pillow they would suggest for you specifically, going forward.
