What is technical analysis?

Technical analysis is the forecasting of market prices through the evaluation of historic price and, where available, volume data.

Recognised as an important part of most investment activity, one of the attractions of technical analysis is that its methods/techniques can be effective in any marketcommodities, cryptocurrencies, bonds, interest rates, equities and currencies. It can be applied to market timing, asset allocation and help limit risk.

The STA Technical Analysis Diploma Part 1 and Part 2 Courses draw upon the deep roots of theory, education, practice and application of technical analysis to give you evidence and justification/foresight for your investment decisions. Both courses are accredited by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI).

The Diploma Part 1 and Diploma Part 2 are internationally recognised professional qualifications which you undertake in a collaborative learning environment. The STA Diploma Part 1 Course is aimed at newcomers and the STA Diploma Part 2 Course is for experienced professionals. The online courses are taught by leading practitioners and authors in technical analysis. You will learn about the method and tools to help you make better informed trading and investment decisions in any asset class, anywhere in the world.

The course lectures are held ‘live’ via Zoom, so you can exchange views and ask questions as you would in a physical classroom. After reflecting on your lessons, you can post questions and observations on the STA Diploma Courses WhatsApp group.

Home Study Course

There is also a Home Study option with personal paced learning. It covers the content of the Part 1 and 2 Diploma courses in 15 subject units, with self-test exercises as well as examination preparation and report writing modules.

STA Diploma Part 1 Course

Introduction to the practice of technical analysis

Aimed at: anyone new or with little/no experience in technical analysis. Accredited for CPD by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) .

Programme at a glance

Introduction to technical analysis

Construction and interpretation of Line, Bar, Point and Figure and Candlestick charts; introduction to Heikin- Ashi, Three-Line Break, Renko and Kagi charts

Support and resistance, theory, identification, utilisation, breakouts

Trend and return lines, where and how to draw them

• Fibonacci numbers and retracements

• Reversal and continuation patterns, target projection from patterns

• Moving averages, different types and how to interpret them

• Momentum, indicators/oscillators, relative strength, sentiment measures; definition, interpretation and how to use them

• Dow Theory, introduction to Elliott Wave Theory - how to use technical analysis strategically

Course dates

The lectures will be held from 6.00pm-8.00pm on the following Wednesday evenings: 9 Oct; 16 Oct; 23 Oct; 30 Oct; 6 Nov; 13 Nov; 20 Nov. If you miss a lecture, you can catch up by watching a video recording on the topic. These videos are available for the duration of the course. The Part 1 exam will be held on Monday 2 Dec 2024

STA Diploma Part 2

Course

Advanced technical analysis skills and knowledge

Aimed at: Experienced technical analysts and practitioners. Accredited for CPD by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI).

Programme at a glance

• The practical application of support, resistance and price objectives by market professionals - how they build on the essential basics and add advanced techniques e.g. Fibonacci projections; working in different time frames

• Construction and advanced applications of Candlestick and Point and Figure charts, including Point and Figure moving averages and indicators

• Advanced moving average, momentum indicator and oscillator techniques; use of market breadth and sentiment measures

• The practical application by market professionals of Dow, Elliott Wave and Gann Theory; Ichimoku Charts; Market Profile®; Behavioural Finance; Risk Management - and much more

Course dates

The lectures will be held from 6.00pm-8.00pm on the following Wednesday evenings: 8 Jan; 15 Jan; 22 Jan; 29 Jan; 5 Feb; 12 Feb; 19 Feb; 26 Feb; 5 Mar; 12 Mar; 19 Mar; 26 Mar. If you miss a lecture, you can catch up by watching a video recording on the topic. These videos are available for the duration of the course.

The Part 2 exam will be held on Thursday 24 April. On 2 April there will be an optional extra session on building your own systematic trading strategy. This doesn’t come into the exam but demonstrates how you can apply your learnt technical analysis skills to build a systematic trading system.

Once you have successfully passed both examinations you will be awarded the STA Diploma in Technical Analysis and the right to use the designation MSTA (Member of the Society of Technical Analysts), regarded as the kite mark in technical analysis.

This qualification also allows you to obtain the International Federation of Technical Analysts (IFTA) CFTe certification and entitles you to certain exemptions from the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) examinations. Full MSTAs with 3+ years’ industry experience are invited to become full members (MCSI).
