SL EditorTalk AUTUMN ARRIVAL I think it was the end of August when I saw a candle in the store marketed as “Pumpkin Spice.” This was the first occurence and a common signal to Pumpkin Spice Lovers that autumn is coming... but in August? I don’t have anything against Pumpkin Spice myself, but there is a very heated debate that exists over either your love of it or hate for it. Even though I will remain neutral, there is an undeniable relief in North Texas once the triple-digits subside, and fall-like weather arrives. As a proud native Texan, the arrival of Big Tex at The State Fair of Texas always alerts me to the fact that autumn is arriving—with Fletcher’s corny dogs and fried everything to sample! And speaking of delectible delights, don’t miss our Where Locals Go review of Sugar Llamas (page 80). Think of it as your favorite donut shop, coffee house and ice cream parlor—all in one location. Each year, October also always means the arrival of our “Who’s Who in Business” issue. This is our 17th annual “Who’s Who” section and I am proud to recognize and showcase 17 local businesses and individuals who have made significant contributions to their respective fields and our local community (page 30). Being included in Society Life’s “Who’s Who” has become a mark of honor and credibility within our community. We have delved into the stories of entrepreneurs who are not only achieving remarkable success in their own ventures, but also redefining what it means to be a leader in business today. From entrepreneurs pushing boundaries to those committed to sustainability, there’s a diverse range of talent in our local business landscape. Around my house, autumn means decorating for Halloween and planning my kids’ costumes. It means pulling out the hoodies for high school football games watching my twins play, and more time outdoors walking our dogs, and playing in the yard as we welcome the changing leaves and the cooler air. There is something magical about the arrival of autumn. The pumpkins everywhere, cozy sweaters, sipping warm apple cider, and the aroma of pumpkin spice filling the air are all signals of the beginning of this new season. I think my favorite part about autumn is that it means the holidays are on the horizon. I can't help but anticipate the holiday season ahead. It's a time for gratitude and togetherness—and as my kids are getting older those meaningful moments with our loved ones that can happen more often during the holidays get fewer and further between. Sweater weather is better together— and autumn’s arrival means that time is near. ELENA ELLIS Publisher / Editorial Director elena@societylifemagazine.com let’s get social @ SocietyLifeMag

Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” — Matthew 16:13 Jesus presented this question to His disciples in Matthew 16:13-16. Not because He had an identity crisis, and certainly not due to amnesia. He wanted to make sure they knew Who He was.

“And they said, ‘Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.’ He saith unto them, ‘But whom say ye that I am?’ And Simon Peter answered and said, ‘Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.’” What’s interesting about the disciples’ responses—each had a different answer. They all had (personal) experiences with Jesus. He was someone different to each of them—as He is to every Believer now. Psalms 46:1 informs us that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. This means He is whatever, and whoever, we need Him to be. He initially takes the stage in Genesis 1:1 where He identifies Himself as Elohim, our Creator, The Mighty One, Sovereign Ruler, and Judge over all. Supreme in all of His ways (1 Corinthians 8:6, Psalms 95:3, 97:9), He is Yahweh, the Only one God that exists. He is El Shaddai, God Almighty. In Ezekiel 48:35, God shows up as Jehovah Shamma, “the Lord is there”; an everabiding presence Who will never leave or forsake us. The final words of the Book of Ezekiel serve as a reminder that no matter where we are or what we’re doing, God is present. That’s great news! Especially in a time when our country is facing much adversity and uncertainty. We can all be thankful that God is Jehovah Nissi, Lord our banner.

In Exodus 17:15, He makes His presence known by assuring us that He will always have our back when we face battles. Vowing to be with us, to strengthen us and to help us with His righteous right hand (Isaiah 41:10). But it’s important to remember that God will only cause us to triumph when our confidence is placed in Him (2 Corinthians 2:14a). Not only does God protect us, but He is also an awesome provider. In Genesis 22:14, God reveals Himself as Jehovah Jireh, Our Provider. Here we see Abraham’s ability to trust God become as tremendous as the promise God made (Genesis 15:5). Abraham was an exemplar of faith. His reliance on God serves as a template for every Believer, that God will supply every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Even during economic hardships, God is able to make all grace abound toward us so that we always have what we “need” (2 Corinthians 9:8). He will not withhold anything good from those who walk uprightly (Psalms 84:11). Lastly, God is Jehovah Shalom, God our Peace: encouraging each of us to call upon Him during times of personal and social chaos. It is His desire that we live at peace with all men and not forget His

promise to “keep us in perfect peace when we keep our mind stayed on Him (Romans 22:18, Isaiah 26:3).

Malachi 3:6 proclaims that He never changes. However, His name does. And while James 1:17 indicates there is no variation in God, we find variations of His name throughout the Bible, each representing great significance and assuring us that He is the Ultimate “Who’s Who.” Many of us are aware of powerful people with raggedy reputations. Those the world classifies as the “best of the best,” lauded by fans and followers, but lacking true dignity and integrity. A god in their own mind and sadly in the minds of others. Thankfully, we know the One True God Who does not depend on “clicks” to confirm His importance. He has the ability to “confirm” Who He is through His Word: All knowing, All powerful, Always present. He is Who He is. And more importantly, He is all we will ever need to live a life of fulfillment. He knows each of us by name (Exodus 33:17). Therefore, we ought to familiarize ourselves with all His names. Who do you say God is? He’s all that… and a bag of chips! (lol) — Y’all be blessed!

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS BY SANDY LOWE

Books can take us on journeys we would never have known without them. Traveling along with the adventurer, experiencing new places and meeting new people can make for a great read. Beyond the Veil by Yvonne Allen recounts a different kind of journey. Growing up in Bombay, Yvonne lived in a one-bedroom apartment with her parents and two sisters. The Catholic Church served as the hub for her family. In spite of the fact that Yvonne and her sisters attended Catholic school and were highly involved in the church’s many activities, Yvonne still felt a lack in her life.

Beyond the Veil

When family came from Canada for a visit, Yvonne realized that her cousins lived on a higher level materially than her family did. The discomfort she felt prodded her to seek God on her own for the first time. This honest, two-way conversation with God started Yvonne on a life-long journey of seeking greater intimacy with Him. Yvonne’s family later immigrated to Canada when she was in her early

teens. She and her sisters entered a public school where all their classes were taught in French. Children from more than 60 nations attended there, but Yvonne excelled in her classes. Yvonne and her family worked for her aunt and uncle in their boutique and warehouse. After a year Yvonne moved on to a job at McDonald’s where she quickly worked her way up to the position of crew trainer. Soon Yvonne’s mother Philomena sensed a greater need in her life for a connection to God. She began to search for an evangelical church. Even though this created tension with their father, Yvonne and her sisters joined their mother. In this way, Yvonne took another step in growing closer to God. The rest of her book takes the reader along on Yvonne’s journey deeper and deeper into the heart of God. As she excels in the banking industry, meets her future husband, marries and has children, the growth in her spiritual life keeps pace with all she is living through and learning. Her hope for the book is that it will help others do the same.

Takes readers on a journey of discovery into the depths of intimacy with Christ. The Bridegroom King is calling you. He knows everything about you, and He wants you to know Him — Father God, Son Jesus, and Holy Spirit — deeply and intimately. Answer the invitation.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Yvonne Allen is an accomplished Christian businesswoman with a diverse background. With over two-and-a-half decades of experience in mortgage lending, Yvonne has positively impacted numerous lives through her expertise in finance. She holds the position of Chief Financial Officer at AFT Commercial, where she continues to excel in her field. Yvonne resides in Southlake, Texas with her husband Paul. SUMMER SANTA SUCCESS 400 VOLUNTEERS & SPONSORS

VISIT AVIATION DISCOVERY FEST THIS NOVEMBER 10-12

The summer of 2023 was an extremely busy time for the dedicated Summer Santa elves. Over 700 families were gifted with children’s clothing or a camp experience through summer enrichment programs. Summer projects serviced more families than in the past. Diligent camp placement team provided over 160 scholarships for Northeast Tarrant kids in DFW area camps. Summer Santa also provided 325 families with Camp in a Box. This fun-filled box contained multi-age enrichment activities that offered repeat experiences over the summer. Summer Santa ended summer with two Back to School Shopping days at Southlake Kohl’s for 235 children. With a volunteer shopping chaperone each child was allocated $150 to spend for school clothes. One little boy was so excited about his new clothes that he decided to wear them. When he was ready to check out at the register, the cashier did some creative thinking on scanning price tags on his clothes. She put him on the checkout table and scanned price tags on clothing items. He left Kohl’s one happy shopper! Upon completing their shopping spree, each child received a backpack loaded with school supplies. Final treat of the day was visiting Summer Santa’s library tables and selecting two books for fun reading. Cooperative efforts of over 400 volunteers and generous sponsors were instrumental in successfully creating many smiling kids. Summer Santa is grateful to all of the help from the contributors and organizations who helped make Summer Santa such a success! Summer Santa invites you to be one of our supporters for their annual Movie Afternoon for families in November.

COMMEMORATIVE AIR FORCE AT DALLAS EXECUTIVE AIRPORT

This year, the Dallas-based nonprofit hosts an amazing array of historically significant and beautiful World War II-era airplanes will be on display at the Aviation Discovery Fest, many of which can be booked for private rides. For true American history buffs, these airplane rides serve as bucket-list memories, but for the volunteers who maintain the aircraft, they are much more important. Funds generated from providing rides helps maintain and preserve these flying pieces of history. However, even those airplanes not giving rides offer tours and hands-on experiences. But the Aviation Discovery Fest offers much more than just these historic warbirds. Families will enjoy one of the largest Living History experiences available in the country, with re-enactors and military vehicles. These expertly staffed interactive displays bring the wartime experience to life for guests of all ages. Kids will love the chance to hop on a ride in a half-track or other military transport vehicle. Inside the Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center (NAEC), visitors will find the Aviation Discovery Zone. This highly interactive area includes dozens of educational experiences, live performances, and more. Throughout the weekend, veterans will share their experiences, often in front of the airplanes that were historically significant during the campaigns in which they served. New this year is a hands-on simulator in the cockpit of an actual C-47 that is based on an aircraft recovered and restored by the CAF, which led the main aerial Allied invasion on D-Day. Guests can strap into the cockpit and experience what it was like to fly teams of paratroopers into hostile territory as the Allies invaded Europe. A classic car show will also be displayed at the event featuring restored vehicles from the 1930s through 1950s. “There is no place in Texas better to spend Veteran’s Day weekend than the Aviation Discovery Fest,” said Henry “Hank” Coates, President/CEO of the Commemorative Air Force. “American veterans are celebrated in every aspect of this event, and their stories will come to life in ways that families cannot experience anywhere else.” Tickets for the Aviation Discovery Fest start at just $5. A family pass, which includes two adult tickets and up to four children’s tickets, is available for $45, which reflects a $15 savings. Aviation Discovery Fest hours on Friday, Nov. 10 are 9am-3pm, then Saturday, Nov. 11 from 9am-4pm, and Sunday, Nov. 12 from 9am-4pm.

She attended and then graduated from Clemson University. She then went on to graduate Magma Cum Laude from the Medical College of Georgia in the Physician Assistant Program. Ashley initially started out practicing Nephrology—focusing on the health of kidneys and Dialysis care. However, she later came to realize that her dream job was a career in Dermatology. Ashley shifted her focus and then excelled as a Dermatology Physician Assistant for 12 years. She specializes in skin care, dermatology, medical aesthetics, and cosmetic injections/procedures. In 2016, Ashley decided to open her own practice in Fort Worth’s prestigious Clearfork area. DFW Dental Implant Center

Combining Art + Science to Create Beautiful Smiles Prosthodontist Steven Branberg, DDS Specialty | With other dentists, if a patient needs help with multiple missing or decayed teeth, they usually have to bounce between different dental offices to get everything they need. With The DFW Dental Implant Center, however, even the most complicated dental cases can all be handled in just one convenient location. Dr. Steven Branberg is a general dentist and prosthodontic expert, meaning he has extensive knowledge and experience repairing and replacing teeth using the most advanced techniques and materials available today. He’s able to perform the entire dental implant procedure from start to finish. His goal for every patient is for them to have a smile that looks great, feels even better, and can be trusted to last a lifetime. After Dr. Branberg rehabs someone’s smile, he and the rest of his team are also able to provide ongoing preventive care to ensure their patients enjoy optimal oral health for decades to come. Why Choose a Prosthodontist | Patients choose a Prosthodontist because of their advanced education and training, efficiency, and expertise with advanced technology. Prosthodontists are extensively trained in state-of-the-art techniques and procedures for treating complex dental conditions and restoring optimum function and esthetics. The term “prostho” actually means replacement and “dontist” means dealing with teeth. Essentially, Prosthodontists are the recognized experts when anything needs to be replaced in your mouth. This can range from a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth and gums in the mouth. While many other dentists can do some of these treatments, Prosthodontists are the specialists dedicated to this type of care, and why so many trust their expertise. What Clients Can Expect | Unlike dentures or dental bridges, getting dental implants is a multi-step process that spans the course of several months. While this may seem like quite a while, it’s this thorough and unique placement that ensures the results are comfortable and long-lasting. In fact, dental implants have the potential to last a lifetime! During your consultation, Dr. Branberg will walk you through your entire treatment plan step-by-step. What Sets Us Apart | What sets Dr. Branberg apart from other dentists and prosthodontists is that he completes every stage of the dental implant treat-

ment himself—including both the surgical placement and the restoration. He’s also given numerous presentations to general dentists on various aspects of prosthodontics, including lectures titled A Systematic Approach to Complete Dentures, Removable Partial Dentures for the General Practitioner, and Implant and Tooth-borne Full-Mouth Reconstructions. He believes that sharing his knowledge and experience with other dental colleagues only helps to improve every patient’s results! Dental Implant Difference | The reason dental implants are so special is that they are the only restoration that brings back an entire tooth both above and below the gumline. Compared to traditional tooth replacements, dental implants provide a stable foundation by replacing the missing roots and fusing directly to the jawbone. With dental implants, your replacement teeth are bonded securely, so you can enjoy a truly lifelike smile. This is why dental implants have become the gold standard in the dentistry field for missing or failing teeth. Improving Lives | Dr. Branberg (also known as “Dr. B”) started practicing here in Texas in 2011, and he’s proud to be a dedicated Colleyville dentist and prosthodontist—helping countless patients achieve incredible smile transformations. He not only improves their dental health, but also helps them feel more outgoing and confident in their everyday life. You Should Know | Thanks to his prosthodontic training, Dr. Branberg knows a thing or two about replacing missing teeth, having rebuilt countless smiles over the course of his career. Whenever someone comes to see him wanting to replace their missing teeth, his first recommendation is always dental implants. Why? Because they offer the best of everything in a single treatment—unmatched aesthetics, supreme functionality, and sturdy construction that can last for decades. When you are ready to enjoy a full and confident smile again, dental implants are your best answer—and you can get them at The DFW Dental Implant Center in Colleyville. Is your smile in need of some serious help? If so, Dr. Steven Branberg is ready to provide everything you need at the highest possible level. To learn more schedule your free one-on-one consultation today.

David Martin & Son Roofing

OCTOBER 2023

SocietyLifeMag.com

Protecting Your Biggest Investment Since 1996 Elevating the Roofing Industry Specialty | David Martin & Son Roofing repairs or replaces residential or commercial roofing projects— no matter how small the roof repair or how large the replacement contract. We’re focused on building long-term relationships—one roof at a time. Why Choose Us | We truly love our community and helping our neighbors protect their biggest investment—their homes. And David Martin & Son Roofing has been doing exactly that with honesty and integrity since 1996. When our clients have any roofing needs, they know who to call—and they know that we will always be there to help! What Sets Us Apart | Even if our clients don’t know the first thing about roofing, they will rely on the truth—and the truth always has a sweet sound to it. They’ll remember that we always tell the truth. Credibility | Our commitment to integrity has also caught the attention of insurance carriers. We are frequently called on by insurance companies to evaluate disputed or bogus claims. They trust our word about whether a job needs to be done or not, and in turn, we work hard to earn that trust. Carriers share information and talk to each other. They look you up to decide if you are credible. We’re at a point now that we’re seeing less and less claim denials because insurance carriers see us differently. Defining Success | We define our success by being able to help and serve others. We are driven by a philosophy that our success will ultimately be determined more by the number of people we help, rather than the amount of roofs we install. Giving Back | Paramount to us is relationshipbuilding and this carries over into our community involvement. Supporting children in their sporting programs in our local school districts is particularly important to us, in addition to also contributing to our local community police departments. Most of all, we support our U.S. soldiers who lay down their lives for us and our country is of utmost importance. Greatest Professional Accomplishment | It is an honor to be recognized in the industry as one of

the top roofing companies in the area. We’re proud to have been designated as a ‘Best’ and ‘Top’ roofer consistently within Tarrant County by the community and local publications. We have been voted the Top Roofing Company in Tarrant County by Society Life Magazine for three consecutive years—2021, 2022 and 2023. In addition, we’re honored to be inductees into Marquis Who’s Who in America—David was in 2021 and I was inducted last year in 2022. Client Testimonials | “I highly recommend David Martin & Son Roofing—it’s a family firm you can depend on! I have done re-roofing three times before. One always wonders about skill, quality, costs and job management. Nothing to wonder about here. David and Jennifer Martin are experienced and personable. Great discussions to answer all your questions before, during, and follow-up after the job. They know shingle brands, problems to look for in your existing roof, and the management of the high quality roofers they employ. They’re committed to a trouble-free new roof. Hire them and let these very particular professionals do it right!” ...................................................................................... “We have been a client of David Martin & Son Roofing for over 20 years. We are the original owners of our home and they’ve been the only roofing company that we have used. We recently had an issue with our insurance company and both David and Jennifer helped us resolve the issue in a very timely manner.” ...................................................................................... “The Martins are all about the customer. They work extremely hard to make sure you receive a first-class product and first-class experience. I highly recommend David Martin & Son Roofing— they are loyal and hard working people!” You Should Know | We fight dishonesty with honesty. We know that a handful of dishonest contractors can tarnish the reputation of the greater roofing industry. And while we can’t control how those bad operators run their businesses, we stand on integrity, trust and strong personal relationships to build goodwill for our company. What gets us through challenges is knowing that we are able to give hope to others during difficult seasons as we encourage them. We pray for our clients and remind them God has a good plan for their life. My Why | Looking back, I realize this is what I was destined to do. I had a seven-year-old sister diagnosed with diabetes who went on Medicare at only 23. I was in my 20s, which is a pretty young age to be exposed to Medicare, and our family wasn’t prepared to handle it. I remember my mother spending so much time and energy trying to find resources to help us through an already tough time. That is when a seed was planted within me. I realized that by giving people on Medicare all the information they need, as well as support, counseling and guidance—we could truly make a difference in people’s lives. That is why I formed The Benefit Link. Greatest Professional Accomplishment | It’s an honor to have been recognized in the

industry as one of the top producers in the United States for over 20 consecutive years—and also to have served on advisory boards for some of the largest insurance carriers in the United States. What Clients Can Expect | We are proud to work independently, and we have access to virtually every major insurance company and their plans. We are dedicated to knowing everything we can by tracking premiums, rate increase history and trends across all companies so we can provide as much information as possible—and at no cost to you! Making A Difference | By knowing your specific needs, we can help you make the right decisions that will benefit you in an industry that can typically be impersonal. Providing peace-ofmind is something you just can’t put a price on.

James Landscaping, Inc. Rhonda James OWNER / FOUNDER Specialty | Since 1989, James Landscaping, Inc. has specialized in Landscape Design and Installation of residential properties, including patios, landscape lighting, irrigation (LI 5159), drainage, water features, organic fertilizer and bed maintenance. What Clients Can Expect | During an initial appointment at a client’s home, my job is to listen to concerns about and vision for their yard. I then formulate possible solutions for problem areas and offer a quote for the design fee if it’s needed. Strong Foundation | We are a full-service contracting company, capable of arranging all aspects of your outdoor living space. At James Landscaping, we offer integrated plans for phased work or future installation to make the project manageable. A commitment to quality work and customer satisfaction is our cornerstone.

What Set Us Apart | 1) First and foremost, we listen to our clients’ wishes and visions. We provide custom-designed, CAD-generated landscapes and outdoor living spaces without compromising the environment. 2) Secondly, our hard-working, experienced crews strive to be the best out there. 3) Lastly, we prioritize staying educated about the latest research on plant health and encourage organic fertilizing. Environmentally Friendly | We strongly urge our clients to use organic fertilizers. The science behind the need for organics has grown exponentially in the last few years. Our staff regularly attends conferences to educate ourselves about these new developments which we then pass along to our clients. We include organic fertilizer in all of our soil preparation. We also offer an annual organic fertilizer program that includes application in the Spring, Summer and Fall. Organic fertilizer will ensure the soil microbes in your garden are rich and happy. After three years of using organic fertilizer, it is possible to reduce watering up to 25%.

Characteristics For Success | Having employees that treat my business like it is their own, makes for a powerful team of people that all strive to do work we can be proud of. We do our best to follow through and do what we say we are going to do and show up when we say we will. The result is steady growth of repeat clientele, year after year, and we are grateful to serve them. Setting the Standard | James Landscaping’s work stands the test of time and the harsh North Texas elements. This lasting beauty also provides a relaxing environment for the homeowners, and in the end, adds monetary value to the property. Olivia Wedel, PhD LPC, NCC, LCDC, PMH-C Specialty | I specialize in serving women and mothers through their various life transitions with focus around prenatal, perinatal and maternal mental health. I work primarily with postpartum depression, anxiety and rage. In addition to the provision of therapeutic services, I provide a variety of non-clinical support services to help mothers, families and the community. My goal is to help women feel hopeful with a renewed sense of purpose and joy by providing specialized services in prenatal and perinatal mental health and planning for postpartum care. Experience | I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and a National Certified Counselor. I obtained my Ph.D. from TCU in 2017. I also completed training and certification through Postpartum Support International in Perinatal Mental Health, which allows me to provide specialized services for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. I work with community agencies and organizations to train employers on postpartum mental health and supporting families. I also offer training to professionals such as chiropractors, massage therapists, doulas, pelvic floor physical therapists, and other birth workers on recognizing signs and symptoms of perinatal distress. Being able to screen and support mothers during the postpartum time frame prevents prolonged distress and can save lives. I feel strongly about having conversations to reduce the stigma around our mental health and promote access to care. Mental Health and Birth | Mental health must be included in your birth plan, but most of the time it’s left out entirely. Then moms are caught off guard and unprepared when they start to experience symptoms after having a baby. Having a realistic plan for sleep and nutrition is essential. I work with moms and dads to develop flexible, but sustainable postpartum plans tailored to their individual needs. These plans are done anywhere from one to three sessions and also may be done either virtually or in person. Defining Success | Success is being able to arrange my schedule so that I can take my son to school, spend time with him in the evenings, and occasionally take a nap with him during the day. Success is being able to set my hours in a way that allows me time where I am intentional with my clients, but also intentional with my family outside of the office—able to do things that replenish my spirit and bring me joy, because that in turn helps me better serve my clients. You Should Know | You can feel better, think more clearly, and move forward with focus and intention. When you’re ready to talk, I will be here for you.

what to do. I give full direction on poses and expressions so you don’t have to worry. Check out my advice in the next section to prepare before your shoot day to be camera-ready. Then, arrive to your session with a great attitude and be ready to have fun creating heirlooms that you and your family will treasure for a lifetime! Best Advice | It depends on the type of portrait, but here are suggestions that will be helpful for most sessions. Schedule appointments—haircuts, manicures, pedicures … whatever touch-ups you’re planning. Make sure to get on your stylist’s calendar early. If you plan on a haircut or color, do so at least one week in advance. Be sure to shave the day of your appointment too (especially guys). Brows need to be waxed/plucked/shaped how you want them. No heavy tanning or spray tanning before the shoot! Tanning in excess can look unnatural and can throw your skin tone off. If you do plan spray or self tan, be sure the knees, ankles, armpits, hands and wrists are not blotchy. Don’t forget nails! Your hands will end up in some of your favorite poses, so be sure to take time to make them presentable. Have your nails mani-

cured and pedicured a day or two before your session. We will always suggest neutral colors to keep the overall look soft. Nude, blush, cream, ivory or french tips will finish off your look perfectly. Bright or really dark colors can distract from the overall creamy tones of the portraits. Honors / Awards | In addition to creating beautiful portraits, I am also an international award winner, print competition judge and educational speaker—teaching thousands of photographers from across the world every year. Greatest Professional Accomplishment | I am very honored that I still photograph almost all of my first clients after 22 years in business. It’s an amazing feeling to get to photograph a high school senior that I’ve been photographing since their mother’s maternity session!

SOUTHLAKE MARKET PRESIDENT PRIVATE BANKING DIRECTOR Specialty | Texas Regional Bank offers our clients full capabilities—including banking, insurance and wealth management. We provide exceptional personal banking products and services with unmatched customer service and experience. I’m dedicated to helping families plan for life’s events—such as credit facilitation and wealth management, as well as business succession, retirement and insurance planning. Defining Success | I work very hard for my clients. I’m consistent and I will not compromise while helping them reach their goals. Things always come together when I do the right thing to help our clients succeed. Giving Back | I take pride in contributing my time and resources to make our community great. It’s the Texas Regional Bank mission to be the ‘People You Know’ in the communities we serve. After going through breast cancer treatments in 2019, I was changed. People often say that once you have had cancer, you change, and I did. I felt so alone during that time—even though I had a great support system and the financial means to cover my medical expenses. However, I realized there were other cancer patients who felt alone and could not pay for their medical care. Thus, I founded the Me Squared Cancer Foundation which helps adults with newly diagnosed cancer in DFW with their financial and emotional journey. We take care of men and women with all types of cancer. I am also very proud to be an active member of our chambers, and I’m proud to support our local school districts. I believe in giving back to the community that I live and work in—this is further supported through the Rotary and its motto I live by “Service Before Self.” Greatest Professional Accomplishment | I am constantly present in the community, volunteering my time with numerous organizations. Never did I think that I would be named “2021 Citizen of the Year” from the Southlake Chamber of Commerce. I am humbled and will forever appreciate the recognition! Defining Qualities | Texas Regional Bank builds relationships through loyalty, trust and hard work. We live by the highest moral and ethical standards. In everything that we do—we are open, honest and respectful. You’re invited to experience what real ‘Relationship Banking’ looks like. This is banking Texas—one relationship at a time.

SL greater good

THE BACKSTORY: JANUARY 12, 2010. A 7.0 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE SHAKES PORT-AU-PRINCE. IN MOMENTS, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS WERE INJURED, BUILDINGS AND INFRASTRUCTURE WERE DESTROYED, COUNTLESS WERE MADE HOMELESS. In the days following, many traditional aid organizations were slow to establish relief efforts, citing dangerous and unstable working conditions. Troubled by the scenes in Port-au-Prince and the lack of proper aid, two Marines, Jake Wood and William McNulty, decided to act. Gathering supplies and volunteers, the small group of veterans, first responders, and medical professionals deployed to Haiti in the days following the earthquake.

TEAM RUBICON is a 501c3 veteran-led humanitarian organization that serves global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises. Founded in 2010 with the expressed goal of quickly responding to large-scale disasters, Team Rubicon has deployed thousands of volunteers across the United States and world to provide relief to communities in need. WHY THE NAME RUBICON? When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon at the head of his legions and marched on Rome, it marked a point of no return. The phrase “crossing the Rubicon” has since survived in reference to any group committing itself to a risky course of action. Back in 2010 crossing over the Artibonite River, the natural border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the small team of eight volunteers called themselves

“Team Rubicon” in reference to Rubicon River in Rome—by crossing their Rubicon, the team acknowledged they were irrevocably committed to their task of helping those in need. The small group focused on populations overlooked or underserved by traditional aid organizations. By applying medical and leadership skills honed by years of military service, Team Rubicon provided aid to thousands of survivors of the Haiti Earthquake. From this initial mission, a larger organization grew.

TEAM RUBICON IS A VOLUNTEER-RUN ORGANIZATION. WITH OVER 65,000 MEMBERS, A DEDICATED GROUP OF 500+ VOLUNTEER LEADERS MAKE THE ORGANIZATION TICK. EVERY YEAR, COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND THE WORLD ARE STRUCK BY DISASTERS AND HUMANITARIAN CRISES CAUSING WIDESPREAD DAMAGE AND IMPACTING THE MOST VULNERABLE. THERE ARE OVER 22 MILLION MILITARY VETERANS LIVING IN THE U.S. THEIR UNIQUE SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND PASSION FOR SERVING OTHERS MAKE THEM AMERICA’S GREATEST NATIONAL RESOURCE. WHETHER YOU ARE A SKILLED CIVILIAN OR MILITARY VETERAN, TEAM RUBICON ASKS YOU TO STEP UP TO HELP THOSE IN NEED.

SERVING THE UNDERSERVED

MISSION FIRST, GREYSHIRTS ALWAYS

Service is the driving principle of Team Rubicon operations and its members. While the initial damage and trauma of natural disasters will impact any population regardless of socio-economic factors, the financial burden of recovery and rebuilding has dramatic and long-lasting repercussions on many rural and urban populations lacking proper insurance and public and private resources. This is why Team Rubicon focuses much of their attention on serving vulnerable and at-risk populations affected by disasters. Team Rubicon’s mission is providing relief to those affected by disaster or crises, no matter when or where they strike. By pairing the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders, medical professionals, and technology solutions, Team Rubicon aims to provide the greatest service and impact possible.

Anyone joining Team Rubicon must understand that their mission to provide disaster response comes first. But it is the volunteer members (who wear their signature ‘grey shirts’ on response operations) who make that mission possible. The leaders serve the members, and in doing so enable members to serve their communities. Team Rubicon needs leaders who aren’t afraid to dare to be great. They’re not interested in those who stand outside the arena lobbing in criticism—they look for the bold soul who despite the threat of failure, steps inside to pursue greatness. Through continued service, Team Rubicon seeks to provide our veterans with three things they lose after leaving the military—a purpose gained through disaster relief; a community built by serving with others; and an identity from recognizing the impact one individual can make. Along with leadership development and other opportunities, Team Rubicon looks to help veterans transition from military to civilian life.

Team Rubicon services are provided free of charge. In 2016, 62 percent of all homes Team Rubicon serviced did not have home insurance. An American Progress report noted that the most extreme weather events typically harmed counties with household incomes below the U.S. median annual income of $51,941. Wildfires, tornadoes, and severe thunderstorms devastated areas with households that earned on average three percent less than the U.S. median income. It is easy to imagine the positive, long-term impact Team Rubicon’s free assistance provided to these families.

JOIN THE TEAM There are over 22 million military veterans living in the United States. Their unique skills, experience, and passion for serving others make them America’s greatest national resource. Team Rubicon unites skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy Emergency Response Teams. For many men and women of our Armed Forces, the desire to serve their country and fellow man does not diminish once they take off the uniform. Team Rubicon provides an opportunity for our veterans to continue serving through disaster response. These veterans possess many of the skills and experiences that define an excellent responder—leadership skills, experience in austere environments, and the ability to work with limited resources. Through continued service, many veterans find a new purpose, community and identity—three intangibles that are often lacking while transitioning to civilian life.

Team Rubicon strictly forbids dueling, but they don’t forbid much else. They strive to treat team members like adults. Want a beer after a long day? Just be smart. Need a few days off? Cool, just let them know. As long as they act like adults, they’ll be treated like adults. Like military service, committing to becoming the best disaster response organization in the world can be mentally, physically and emotionally grueling. They take care of themselves and each other so they are best equipped to serve those in the greatest need.

SUPPORT THE SQUAD Behind every successful operation is a group of individuals committed to supporting Team Rubicon’s mission of serving global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises. They call them the Support Squad. The Support Squad fuels Team Rubicon’s Ready Reserve Fund— unlocking a full spectrum of capabilities and enabling our veteran-led response teams to provide relief to multiple at-risk communities. Team Rubicon’sReady Reserve Fund is essential to maintaining the core of their capabilities—including trainings, volunteer engagements, “low-attention” disaster response operations and Rebuild Program. Whether you are a military veteran or a skilled civilian, it’s time to step up to help communities in need. They hope you will consider joining or donating to support Team Rubicon teams in the field. —————————————————–— TeamRubiconUSA.org

SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? RACHEL BYONE: One of my earliest memories of my mom was her love for family and her desire to travel. I grew up in the Texas Panhandle and my mother was a stay-at-home mom for much of my childhood. Every summer my mother would take us on road trips throughout the country. My mom also had a deep love for family. As a child, I have several fond memories of spending time with my mom, dad, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and close family friends. SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? RB: I thought motherhood would come effortlessly. Although I had a vision of what motherhood meant to me, I underestimated how each of individual personalities would intertwine and how each piece of the puzzle would fit together. I lead by example, and I am intentional on being a positive influence in every encounter with my daughter. Often times, we put a lot of pressure on children to be perfect rather than just being reassuring as a parent. I encourage Lauren to have more good days than not and inspire her to grow from her mistakes. SL: What’s something you always wanted to do but didn’t... and why didn’t you? RB: I always wanted to study abroad. Growing up in West Texas, I never researched it due to the inherent unfamiliarity of residing in a foreign country. As an adult, I am not ruling out becoming an expatriate later in life. There are so many beautiful places to see and visit, and I am not opposed to living abroad. SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid that you swore you’d never do as a parent? RB: My mom was a very straight forward, and a nononsense woman. As a result, I cannot think of one thing that my mother did that I swore I would never do as a parent. I could not ask for a better mother. I often try to emulate how I might perceive she would react given certain situations. SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? RB: When I was much younger, I wanted to be a teacher. I loved math and was an A-honor roll student throughout school. I took my first accounting course in high school and decided to major in accounting. Fast forward, and I have been in the accounting industry for 18 years and

have held various management roles in accounting and financial planning and analysis. SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? RB: With each phase of life, I have developed a greater understanding of what it means to be a mom. From parenting a child who is now a preteen, I have learned to be more adaptive to my daughter’s needs while remaining steadfast in my beliefs. Social media and online bullying are two obstacles that many parents in my generation were fortunate to never encounter as a child. Growing up, I never paid much attention to external factors and hope that my daughter will uphold the same perseverance. SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? RB: I am not sure that this qualifies as a vacation, but my husband and I had a small destination wedding and married in Niagara Falls. Our family bonded as we ventured out and explored the falls. Aside from exchanging our wedding vows, one of the most memorable moments from our trip was the fact that my dad was adamant that we walk to Three Sisters Island to get a view of the falls from a different angle. This was meaningful in the sense that I have two older sisters and along the way we metaphorically joked that we were walking to Three Sisters Island. For our 10-year anniversary, my husband and I traveled back to Niagara Falls with our daughter and recreated several candid photos from our first visit to the falls. My daughter and I stood in several poses as I once stood with my niece at our wedding—and my husband and daughter stood as my niece and father once stood. This memory is special to me in that it symbolically tied the past with the present. SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? RB: Unfortunately, over the last two years, I experienced the loss of both of my parents who were relatively young. Being part of the “sandwich generation” and simultaneously caring for my parents, young daughter, and family was a moment that radically changed how I saw motherhood. Many preconceived notions about motherhood solely focus on what it means to be a mother in order to care for, nurture, and raise a child. Caring for my parents jolted me in a position to extend the same kindness, love, and compassion that they instilled in me during a time in which they needed me the most. This moment in time boldly illustrated

that a child’s love is just as important as the love a parent shares with their child. SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? RB: This question is quite interesting! I initially thought I was ready to have a child a couple of years after my husband and I married. Our plans later changed, and we waited almost a decade before having a child. During that time, we decided to check things off our bucket list while traveling and attending concerts and major sporting events. Since our daughter was born, she has been the pride and joy of my life. We absolutely love and adore her. In her spare time, she is a competitive gymnast and is entering her fourth year of competition. SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? RB: Looking back over the years, there are so many family photos to choose from! Some of my favorite family pictures include the younger photos that I took with my parents and older sisters, as well as pictures that my daughter has taken with my parents. These moments are priceless and remind me that love transcends generations. SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? RB: My first year of motherhood was filled with gratitude. It was a pivotal moment of bringing a child into the world and being more intentional on what my husband and I desired in life. My first year of motherhood allowed me to openly pour love into my daughter’s life because so many of our early years as a couple were tailored around just the two of us. SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? RB: What I hope most for Lauren is that she extends kindness and compassion towards others. I also hope that as she matures into her teenage and adult years that she stands true to herself and never quiets her inner self to appease others. SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? RB: My biggest struggle as a working mom is obtaining a work-life balance in order to balance my career with family life. Planning and time management are crucial because there just never seem to be enough hours in the day! SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? RB: I grew up in a household, where music was everything! My mother loved all genres of music, and my father was a radio DJ during his early years in college. I cannot count the number of vinyl records and cassette tapes that my parents owned prior to Apple Music and Spotify. I am not sure that I can narrow it down to one song, but if I could choose two songs, I would choose Fortunate by Maxwell since that was my wedding song and Dance with my Father by Luther Vandross as it took on a new meaning after my father’s passing.

SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it. RB: It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day grind. The perfect day off would be a day of complete rest, tranquility, and relaxation. In the morning, I would meditate peacefully without all the external stressors, followed by a late brunch with my husband and daughter. We would then spend the rest of the afternoon socializing with each other and enjoying our favorite pastimes at home. SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? RB: Find time to make lasting memories! Time passes by so fast when children are younger. Spend time wisely and cherish all the moments. As a mother, you may not always have the right answer at the right time, but lean on your faith and it will see you through. SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? RB: One of my favorite scriptures that I choose to live by is Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Due to technological advances and the abundance of social media platforms, children in today’s society endure a considerable amount of pressure to fit in and adhere to new social norms. This scripture reassures us that despite what our surroundings or situation may bear, we are able to refocus our mindset on what is pleasing to God’s will. SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? RB: If I could share a meal with any woman past, present, or future, I would share another meal with my mom who passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. After I relocated to DFW, my mother made countless trips to visit throughout the years to attend family celebrations no matter how big or small. My mother would often tease others by saying she resided six months of the year in DFW and the remaining six months in the Texas Panhandle. I would choose to share a meal with my mom because we were very close, and I feel that our time on this side of eternity was far too short. SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? RB: I may be slightly partial, but I admire my mom the most! She had such an impact on my life. I am thankful for the relationship we built and how it evolved throughout the years. SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? RB: At the end of a long day, I like to relax by having lighthearted conversations with my daughter. It is always interesting to reflect on our day and view life from her perspective. Scary Stories

To Tell Dads in the Dark It was snowing. They told him when he took the job – taking care of the resort during the winter season – that it’d be a lot of snow. A hell of a lot of snow. “I don’t mind,” he chuckled, “Don’t gotta mow the lawn at least!” Shoveling the front walk was a bitch, though. He stamped his boots on the mat in the front hallway, carefully propping the shovel up against the corner where Sally had laid down the tarp. Tossing his gloves and boots in the corner, he pulled his phone out and texted Sally the coffee emoji. Jen had taught him that recently. Before hitting “send,” he added a blue heart.

Hopeful that coffee was on its way, he made his way to the area of the front lobby they’d taken to using as a makeshift living room. He heard the fire roaring and Jen and Kelly’s giggles above it. He entered the room, and noticed the two girls cuddled up in an armchair—his armchair, the comfiest armchair, the one he always sat in—engrossed in the iPad. “Now, what are you two troublemakers doing over there, sittin’ in your dad’s chair?” The giggling stopped. The iPad too, seemed to stop, a frozen reflection of red and blue and green glows on his daughters’ faces. After a moment that might have been a temporary stoppage of spacetime, they stared up at him blankly. Their voices had the howling winter wind deep within them as they tonelessly recited in perfect monotonous harmony, “This is our chair. We have always sat in this chair. We will always sit in this chair.” The nagging sensation that something was different started in the shower. Heading downstairs, Bob cut through the kitchen to the living room and grabbed the remote. “Bob,” Mary’s voice called from behind him, “Come on, no TV during breakfast. It’s Sunday.” I just… I had a feeling something was up. “Well, it’ll still be up after church,” she said. Bob ruffled his son Patrick’s hair and plopped down beside him at the kitchen table. Mary had a point, as always. But church only aroused Bob’s suspicions further. Pastor John seemed distracted, drifting off during the sermon. Peter, usually ready with an enthusiastic handshake and predictions for the day’s football games during the exchange of greetings, had a stretched grin that appeared to be glued on. Bob could practically hear Mark’s teeth grinding six pews back. As he looked around, Bob noticed all of the dads seemed tense. Maybe that running back, the one that was on a hot streak, got injured and couldn’t play in today’s game. Guys might’ve had money on that game.

Bob thought he’d reassured himself, but he found himself trotting out to the car after the service, cranking the engine, and turning on the radio. The hourly news brief was just winding down, and all seemed normal. “Well that’s the news for the hour,” the DJ wrapped up, “Gonna be a great game on a beautiful Sunday, so let’s enjoy some of those great tunes we all remember,” The instantly familiar intro to “Layla” began playing. Bob sighed, relieved. Mary gave him a look and chuckled softly. He shifted the car into reverse. Patrick waved out the window at one of his school friends. Wait. Bob frowned. “Layla”… the guitar part. The guitar was wrong. The guitar was bad. It hit him. That feeling, all day, the strained faces of the men at church… it all made sense, suddenly and horribly. He felt nauseated, like the fundamental physics of the world had changed and he would never regain a feeling of equilibrium. He pulled up the emergency brake, opened the car door, and retched. Vaguely he sensed other men doing the same, a soft backing track of “Layla” wafting from rolled-down car windows. Eric Clapton is not the greatest guitar player in history. A flash of lightning across my eyelids careens me into consciousness. No alarm clock glow. The power’s out. A tree outside groans dangerously... dang storm. “Daddy?” “I’m coming, sweetie,” I swing my legs over the side of the bed and bang my knee on the nightstand, of course! I get to the door and I think I see her silhouette at the end of the hall, outside her bedroom door. I stumble towards her but she suddenly turns left—like she’s going downstairs. “Where are you going?” I call after her, “Be careful, the power’s out.”

|

B Y J E S S I E G U Y- RYA N

“Daddy?” “Just head to the kitchen, hon, I’ll get you a snack.” Milk might go bad anyway, a bowl of cereal might get her back to sleep. “Daddy?” Her voice sounds different. Louder… maybe even deeper? Maybe it’s the power outage. Stuff always sounds different in the dark. I take the stairs slowly, the dog’s always leaving bones and toys and the last thing I need is to take a spill in the middle of a near-hurricane, with God knows how many lines down around town. “Daddy?” Her voice is definitely different. Not a little girl’s voice. More confident… older. Like her mom, but her mom’s out of town. She’s just scared, storms always freaked her out. Even when she was real little, any time it rained she’d keep us up half the night. I take the last few steps two at a time and quicken my pace into the kitchen. It’s real dark. Darker than it should be. I see her in front of me, I think, a vague outline of my little girl. But she’s… different. “Daddy. Daddy. Daddydaddydaddydad. Dad.” Suddenly she’s right here, right in front of me. Her breath is cold and she is different. Her hands grip my head and I can’t move. I’m so scared and I can’t move and I don’t know if it’s because I’m so scared or that she’s so strong. Why is she so strong? She’s my little girl. She couldn’t even reel a fish in on her own. Why... her face is centimeters away from mine. I recognize her... but I don’t. “Daaaddddd” she rasps. “Your little girl is growing up.”

JOHN WAYNE GRIT SERIES The John Wayne Cancer Foundation Offers Courage, Strength & Grit to those Battling Cancer

Everyone knows who John Wayne is. Who could forget his rugged good looks, straight-shooting manner or loyalty to American conservatism? Known as The Duke, Wayne got his nickname because of his love for his Airedale Terrier, Duke, who was always by his side. In his 50-year career, Wayne made over 200 movies and won the Oscar for portraying Rooster Cogburn in the 1969 Western blockbuster True Grit. What you may not remember is how John Wayne died. After having lung cancer, which he managed to lick, he was later diagnosed with stomach cancer, which took his life on July 11, 1979. During that difficult time, he became passionate about helping others fight this terrible disease. To honor his memory, his family created The John Wayne Cancer Foundation to bring courage, strength, and grit to the fight against cancer. Another incredible fact you may not know is that there is a place in the stockyards dedicated to keeping Wayne's True Grit alive. John Wayne: An American Experience is in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards. Featuring over 400 pieces of personal and professional memorabilia, the exhibit will take you through John Wayne's life and how he achieved the ultimate American dream through hard work and determination. Its mission is to preserve and protect the name, image, and likeness of John Wayne by associating the John Wayne brand with quality and timeless products and experiences that embody the spirit of John Wayne and give back to the community. This gallery is centered around John Wayne's life off-screen, which was much more important to him in many ways. He firmly believed in the idea of a "more perfect union" and did his best to manifest this through his actions throughout his life. At John Wayne: An American Experience, they have a great view of 16 of John Wayne's favorite hats—from Stetsons to fedoras—and can step into three of his scenes to pose with him to create new images you can share via social media. Sprawling over 10,000 square feet, this exhibit is structured to give you an intimate tour of the life of John Wayne. Starting with his early childhood and career, each room highlights an aspect of The Duke's legacy. For the film aficionados, an extensive gallery called the "Life on Screen" highlights the most iconic film props and costumes. In the "America, Why I Love Her" gallery, you can immerse in patriotism through Grammy-nominated original poems recited by John Wayne—as never-before-seen family photos and correspondences. There is also a retail space with limited-edition items, including apparel, fine art, western accessories and photography. Enjoy a beverage in the Lounge featuring Duke Bourbon. Notable display pieces include the screenplay and Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1969 movie True Grit. ———————————————————–———————————————————————— John Wayne: An American Experience is also home to an ongoing calendar of fun events that help raise money to fight cancer. Their next big fundraiser is The John Wayne True Grit Series Run to Fight Cancer, held on Saturday, November 11, at the historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Show your grit in the fight against cancer by running or walking through iconic John Wayne movie locations and rugged Western landscapes. John Wayne Grit Series events benefit the John Wayne Cancer Foundation, so every step you take advances the fight against cancer through pioneering research and programs. This 5k course weaves through the historic Fort Worth Stockyards and along the Trinity Trail, where you'll take in the views of the downtown Fort Worth skyline. Participants can race, run, or walk. My friend invited me over for a fall kickoff dinner and made the most amazing pumpkin pastries out of her love for the Harry Potter ‘pasties.’ She served savory pastries for an appetizer and sweet for dessert. I think sweet pastries are more common, but the savory ones blew me away. The combination of sharp cheddar, rosemary and garlic had me swooning!

SAVORY PUMPKIN - INGREDIENTS: 7.5 oz of Pumpkin Purée (½ a Can) Refrigerated Pie Dough Flour for Dusting 1 Tbsp Butter 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic ⅓ Cup Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese ⅓ Cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese 1 Tsp Rosemary 1 Tsp Thyme ¼ Tsp Salt ½ Tsp Black Pepper 4 Hearty Shakes of 21 Seasoning Salute from Trader Joe’s 1 Tbsp Melted Butter for Brushing ...............................................................................................

(1) Thaw pie dough in refrigerator overnight.

...............................................................................................

(2) Preheat oven to 400 F. Place parchment paper or tin foil on two baking sheets.

...............................................................................................

(3) Mix pumpkin puree with room temperature butter and all listed seasonings in a large bowl.

...............................................................................................

(4) Dust your rolling pin with flour, and roll your pie crust out to 1/8 inch thick. Make sure it isn’t too thick! I made that mistake the first time. Cut the dough into 4-inch circles or into pumpkin shapes with a cookie cutter.

...............................................................................................

(5) Spoon out about a teaspoon of the pumpkin mixture onto one side of your dough circles then fold them over to create half-moons. If you’re using a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter, spoon the mixture onto one pumpkin cut out and place another on top. Crimp the edges of your pastry closed. Cut two tiny slits into the top of each to vent.

...............................................................................................

(6) Transfer pastries to baking sheets, and brush each with melted butter.

SL WhereLocalsGo PHOTOS BY LORRAINE HAAN-STEWART REVIEW BY JENNIFER SLOAN

SUGAR LLAMAS Sugar Llamas, a Tulsa-based treat shop chain, opened its debut DFW location right in the heart of Keller in August. This delightful haven of sweet indulgence features custom-blended coffee drinks, ice cream and a wide variety of mini doughnuts made fresh to order and served hot. Sugar Llamas—with its whimsical name and irresistible creations—has already become a beloved institution among locals. Walking through their doors, you’ll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors, that intoxicating “fresh baked” aroma and a life-size llama statue lovingly referred to as “Llarry.” That’s Larry with two L’s and he’s named after the reallife llama belonging to Sugar Llamas’ owners Mallory and Chris D’Aliso. “Outside of Sugar Llamas, we love to spend time at our farm where our very own llama, Llarry, and six goats reside,” says Mallory. Chris would later divulge that Llarry’s job is more than donut poster child. He’s the guardian of the goats and isn’t afraid to chase off a coyote to save his appointed herd. Make sure you snap a selfie with the likeness of this brave llama hero.

At the heart of Sugar Llamas’ charm are their donuts—truly works of art that are almost too pretty to eat. Each donut is a masterpiece, lovingly crafted with attention-to-detail. It’s more than just a place to satisfy your sweet tooth; it’s a portal to a world of imagination and creativity. Patrons can customize their doughnut selection with dozens of drizzles and toppings or pick from a menu featuring over 20 suggested combinations. Fan favorites include the “Flintstone” with its vanilla drizzle and Fruity Pebbles. If you’re looking for traditional breakfast flavors, you can’t go wrong with the “Blueberry Pancake” featuring powdered sugar, blueberries and a good smathering of maple syrup. I’ve personally fallen in love with the “Sopapilla” that comes served with cinnamon sugar and honey. The simplicity of it lets the freshness of the dough take spotlight. Bottom line—whether you are a donut purist or boast an eclectic palate—there’s a donut here for you. While the donuts are the stars of the show, Sugar Llamas also takes its coffee seriously. Pairing a freshly brewed cup of java with a warm donut is a match made in heaven. From espresso-based

drinks to iced coffees, the shop offers a variety of options to complement your sweet choice. The “Fall Latte Lineup” features flavors such as Brown Sugar Cinnamon, Pumpkin Spice and White Chocolate Macadamia Nut. I suggest pairing any of those with their Banana Bread donut creation for ultimate cozy sweater weather vibes. So you’re not a coffee lover (for shame), there’s also an extensive menu of caffeinated concoctions featuring Red Bull as a base. The Bahama Llama adds in the flavors of coconut, peach and strawberry and tastes exactly like being on a beach somewhere. If you’re a fan of the pink starburst, the Starburst is the liquid version of just that—by combining Red Bull with white chocolate and strawberry. If you’re going fully-unleaded, caffeine-free libations

include fully customizable Italian Sodas and Shakes and Malts made with any of their delectable ice cream flavors. Sugar Llamas is more than just a place to grab a sweet treat—it’s a community hub. “Interacting with the community and developing relationships with our regulars has been the best part of owning Sugar Llamas,” admits Mallory. Sugar Llamas has carved a special place in the hearts of local residents. A welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff make it a place where everyone feels at home. With its one-of-a-kind offerings, commitment to quality and dedication to the community, it has become more than just a donut shop. It’s where families gather on weekend mornings, old friends catch up over coffee, and celebrations come to life with a box of colorful donuts.
