GOODBYE 25, HELLO 26 “Raise a glass to new memories waiting to be made. Cheers!”

As we turn the final pages of 2025, there’s a familiar mix of reflection and excitement in the air. The close of one year always invites us to pause remembering milestones, celebrations and moments that made us laugh, grow and connect—while the promise of a brand new year sparks anticipation for what’s ahead and brings Society Life Magazine to our 20 year milestone in print. We’re thrilled to help you say goodbye to 2025 and welcome 2026 in true North Texas style. Our cover story is all about ringing in the New Year with some of the most spectacular celebrations across DFW. From glamorous galas and rooftop countdowns to lively live-music parties and elegant dinners, the Metroplex knows how to celebrate big. Whether you’re toasting with champagne at midnight, dancing into the early hours, or enjoying a more intimate evening with friends, this issue is your guide to starting 2026 on a high note. But, the celebration season doesn’t end when the clock strikes midnight on December 31. There are still plenty of magical holiday experiences to enjoy well into early January. One of our favorites is the immersive SNOWDAY at Galleria Dallas, where winter wonder comes to life indoors—perfect for families, date nights and anyone looking to extend that festive feeling just a little longer. It’s a joyful reminder that the holidays are as much about experiences as they are about traditions. Equally enchanting is Lone Star Christmas at the Gaylord Texan Resort, a beloved holiday destination that continues to dazzle guests from near and far. This year’s highlights include the unforgettable ICE! experience featuring Buddy the Elf, where larger-than-life ice sculptures bring the beloved holiday story to life in spectacular fashion. It’s the kind of experience that creates lasting memories for all ages. And we can’t forget their New Year’s Eve Bash at the beautiful Glass Cactus overlooking Lake Grapevine. This annual celebration features Le Freak, bringing high-energy disco vibes, nonstop dancing and an unforgettable soundtrack to ring in the New Year in style, all set against stunning lakeside views and a festive midnight countdown. As we step into 2026, we do so with gratitude for our readers, our community and the vibrant spirit that makes North Texas such a remarkable place to live. From all of us at Society Life Magazine, we wish you a season filled with joy and meaningful moments. May your holidays be bright, your celebrations memorable, and your New Year filled with happiness, health and exciting new beginnings. Cheers to 2026—we can’t wait to share it all with you. The door completely transformed the look of my home and instantly elevated its curb appeal and value. The craftsmanship is exceptional—every detail of the hand-forged wrought iron feels solid, timeless and beautifully made. What impressed me most was the range of styles and the durability. My door isn’t just stunning to look at— it feels built to last. From the design process to installation, the experience was seamless, and the final result exceeded my expectations. Love That Door delivered a true statement piece, and I couldn’t be happier with the quality, beauty and lasting impact it’s brought to my home. It’s the perfect centerpiece that elevates the entire curb appeal. If you’re upgrading just one thing on your home, you’ll never regret choosing Love That Door!”

————————————————————————–———— FROM SANDY A.“It’s true—I love my new door! Love that Door has an amazing catalog of beautiful iron doors. They truly know their stuff and one of the best aspect of buying from them was that everything was included in the sale, i.e door handles, threshold, etc. So, there were no ‘gotchas’ after | purchased my door. Initially, | thought their price was higher than competitors until | priced out everything that needed to be included (which the competitors didn’t include in the sale price of the door). And, as I said... I love my door!” FROM JARRETT J. “I Love That Door! Beginning to end, the process was easy and the different employees we interacted with were very professional. With everything going on in the world it took a little longer than we originally thought to get our door installed, but it was well worth the wait! They have lots of designs to choose from or you can customize every detail. Our sales person guided us through the design process and they had a digital drawing of the door back to us in just a few days. When it came time for installation, the crew was very professional and did an outstanding job inside and out. These doors are heavy duty and leave an impression on everyone who visits our home.”

FROM LEANN P. “We absolutely love our new double iron doors! They were totally worth the wait to get exactly the style of doors that we wanted. Their team was immensely helpful during the initial sales process and contract. We were very impressed with installation at each step of the way—from the initial installation, to the completion of the brick work, to the final touch ups. The process was completed within a couple of weeks and we couldn’t be happier. Be warned though, once you install a new door, you may want to upgrade your lights!” FROM SANDRA S. “We love our new iron double doors! We replaced our old builder’s wood door that was over 20 years old. Their team was instrumental in helping us see the vision from the one-door entryway to two doors. I am happy they offered this option. The doors are good quality, nice and heavy. The glass is reflective so you can’t see in during the day. The installation went pretty quick, and the installers had it installed in less than a day. The painter did a great job also after the installation.” With Love That Door, you get more than a door—you get a centerpiece that transforms your home. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given.” — Isaiah 9:6

A Biblical Reflection

THE TRUE GIFT OF CHRISTMAS Twinkling lights, festive music and the joy of giving — Christmas is a season many of us cherish. Yet behind every ornament and every gift lies a story far greater than the celebration itself —the story of Jesus Christ, God’s gift to the world. The Bible reminds us that Christmas is not just a holiday — it is a divine invitation to hope, peace and love. FAITH IN THE UNEXPECTED The Christmas story begins with Mary, a young woman chosen by God to bear His Son. In Luke 1:31, the angel Gabriel tells her, “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.” Mary’s initial surprise and awe quickly give way to faith: “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38). Her humble surrender reminds us that Christmas calls us to trust God’s plans, even when life surprises us. A PROMISE FULFILLED Long before Jesus’ birth, prophets spoke of the Messiah’s arrival. Isaiah 9:6 declares, “And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Every Christmas, we celebrate not only a baby in a manger but also God’s faithfulness. His promises, centuries old, are still alive today. The lights and carols point us back to this eternal truth that God keeps His word. GOD’S LOVE IN HUMBLE PLACES Jesus’ birth in a stable, wrapped in simple cloths,

tells us something profound. Luke 2:7 notes, “She placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available.” God chose humility to show that His love reaches everyone, everywhere—rich or poor, strong or weak. Christmas reminds us that God comes near in the ordinary, messy moments of life. JOY FOR EVERYONE Shepherds were the first to hear the angelic announcement: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy… a Savior has been born” (Luke 2:10–11). God’s message of hope is for all people. Their eager journey to see the newborn King challenges us to respond with excitement and share Christ’s love with those around us. THE ULTIMATE GIFT Beyond the manger lies the mission of Christ’s life—salvation. John 3:16 reminds us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Every gift we wrap or receive can reflect the ultimate gift—Jesus

Himself. Christmas invites us to pause, reflect and rejoice in His presence. LIVING THE MESSAGE Romans 12:13 urges, “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” Christmas is a season not only of receiving but of giving— extending love and kindness to others. In doing so, we mirror the generosity of God, who gave His Son so that we might experience His peace and joy. CELEBRATING THIS SEASON Let us look beyond the sparkle and the present this Christmas. Let us celebrate Mary’s faith, the shepherds’ joy and the fulfillment of God’s promises. Most importantly, let us embrace the gift of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, whose light continues to shine in a dark world. In the midst of holiday busyness, may your heart pause to remember the true miracle of Christmas—God with us, offering hope, love and everlasting life. That is the gift worth celebrating this season—and every season. “Emmanuel—God with us.”

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS

Lioness of Punjab by author Anita Jari Kharbanda is a gripping and heartfelt retelling of the legendary Sikh warrior Mai Bhago, bringing her courage and conviction to the forefront in a way that feels both timeless and relevant. She opens the story with Bhag Bhari as a young woman living in a small Punjabi village in early 1700s, already restless under the weight of expectations. While women around her are encouraged to follow traditional roles, Bhag Bhari senses a different path—one calling her toward physical strength, purpose and service. Her desire to train as a warrior forms the emotional backbone of the novel, and Kharbanda captures that hunger for agency with clarity and empathy.

LIONESS

OF PUNJAB

The novel shines in the way it blends personal conflict with broader tensions of the era. As Mughal oppression intensifies and her community faces danger, Bhag Bhari’s internal determination evolves into bravery. Kharbanda’s battle scenes are vivid and suspenseful, giving readers a clear sense of what Mai Bhago risked to defend her people. Yet the author never allows the action to overshadow the emotional landscape. Bhag Bhari remains fully human as a daughter, a wife, a friend, and even as she grows into a warrior. Kharbanda’s world-building is one of the book’s greatest strengths. She immerses readers in 18th-century Sikh life through carefully chosen details—

the rhythms of village routines, role of faith, pressure of tradition, and the fierce loyalty that binds both the families and communities. For readers unfamiliar with Sikh history, Lioness of Punjab is both an engaging story and accessible introduction to a remarkable real-life figure. Themes of identity, empowerment and self-determination run throughout the narrative. Seeing Bhag Bhari push against gender expectations creates an inspiring message for young adults, especially girls who may also be navigating rigid cultural norms. The author also successfully illustrates that courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to move forward anyway. This is a message that resonates far beyond its historical setting. If some side characters feel lightly developed compared with the richness of Bhag Bhari’s journey, the novel still succeeds through its emotional depth and strong sense of purpose. Kharbanda’s writing is warm, clear and heartfelt, making the story accessible while honoring the gravity of its history. Ultimately, Lioness of Punjab is a stirring celebration of resilience and an overdue spotlight on a heroic woman determined to change the course of her community. Kharbanda delivers a powerful, engaging tribute that will inspire both young adults and adult readers alike looking for a story rooted in bravery, identity and hope.

A Strong Woman Who Becomes a Shining Inspiration for Women Everywhere Energetic coming-of-age young adult novel brings us closer to Mai Bhago — a woman revered in the Sikh community and beyond

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Anita Kharbanda is an Indian-American engineer by trade, and a storyteller by heart. She lives in North Texas with her loving husband and two sons. An avid lifelong reader of all kinds of fiction, she revels in seeing her children do the same. The healing power of letters filled with family history inspired Anita to start writing. She now writes the kinds of stories she’s devoured through the years, with one difference. She promised herself she’d write stories about the characters she dreamed of seeing in books growing up, and lift the voices of those who go unheard.

A SMALL PART OF A BIGGER STORY

TidBits ONE HUNDRED WOMEN – ONE BIG IMPACT

100 WOMEN WHO CARE – NORTHEAST TARRANT COUNTY

GREAT GALA ENCHANTED GARDEN

GCS MOMS LEAGUE The Grapevine Colleyville Southlake Moms League (GCSML) is thrilled to celebrate their 32nd year of community outreach with The 2026 Great Gala – Enchanted Garden. You’re invited to join them on April 17, 2026 to support The Stepping Stones Foundation of Keller. The GCSML's annual Great Gala has a rich history of community involvement and entertainment while also raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities. This year will be truly magical with the help of local supporters like you. Tickets, sponsorship opportunities and auction donations are available online. This signature event supports the Stepping Stones Foundation, a nonprofit helping youth in crisis across North Texas. With a goal to raise $100,000, The Great Gala brings our community together to celebrate generosity and create lasting change.

A powerful new giving circle is launching in Northeast Tarrant County, designed for women to create meaningful local impact without heavy time commitments. 100 Women Who Care – Northeast Tarrant County welcomes local women to take part in an effort that turns relatively small financial contributions into major support for area nonprofits. “Collective giving is a powerful force,” said local founder Jennifer Worrel. “Every woman I know wants to make a real difference in her community. The ‘100 Women’ model amplifies individual generosity into maximum results while acknowledging both the unique needs in our area and the hectic pace of our lives.” Members meet quarterly for just one hour, each pledging $100. Three non-profits will be randomly selected from member nominations, and the group will vote to determine a single recipient of pooled donations. Individually, it’s a small investment. But collectively, it streamlines into a $10,000+ infusion directly into a non-profit serving the Northeast Tarrant County area. The group’s inaugural event will take place this January 26, 2026, hosted by The Elmore Hotel. “As a new member of the Southlake community, we’re committed to being more than a place to stay,” shared Kalyana Krishnamoorthy, General Manager of The Elmore Hotel. “We’re honored to support the organizations that strengthen this region, and we’re excited for this event to be the first of many meaningful ways we contribute to the civic spirit of Northeast Tarrant County.” The 100 Women model started 20 years ago in Michigan and now has hundreds of chapters across the country. The Northeast Tarrant County group will focus on supporting community non-profits where the pooled donation has potential to move the needle for the mission of each organization. “By focusing philanthropy locally, we will generate immediate funding and catalyze tangible results right here where we live,” says Worrel. “I love a good charity gala, but they take a lot of work!” she jokes. “Nobody has time for a bake sale. 100 Women is a way to give back—in a big way—without adding to anyone’s to-do list.” While 100 women is the goal, it is by no means a limitation. Every interested woman is welcome to join. To learn more visit them on Facebook and Instagram. @100WomenWhoCareNETC

NEW THOUGHTFUL LEGACY PLANNING

PARTING STONE REDEFINES REMEMBRANCE A recent trend has more and more Americans rethinking how they want to be remembered, one thing is clear: personalization and peace-of-mind matter more than ever. With cremation now chosen by more than 60% of families nationwide, many people are now seeking alternatives to more traditional ashes that feel more meaningful, comforting and enduring. At the same time, nearly three-quarters of Americans have begun planning their own end-of-life arrangements. They’re motivated by a desire to reduce stress for loved ones and ensure their wishes are honored. This cultural shift has inspired a new offering from Parting Stone company known for transforming cremated remains into smooth, solid stones. Featured on Shark Tank, Parting Stone introduced Pre-Need Plans, allowing individuals to make arrangements in advance and choose solidified remains instead of ashes. The modern approach is reframing memorialization as something tangible and shareable— stones that can be held, displayed or divided among family members as lasting keepsakes. Parting Stone’s patented process transforms 100% of cremated remains into a collection of 40 to 80 or more stones, offering families a personal way to honor life stories. The new plans are designed to be simple and accessible, and completed entirely online. They provide reassurance that decisions have been made when the time comes. Founder and CEO Justin Crowe says advance planning offers more than logistics providing clarity and comfort. Families no longer wonder what to do or make decisions under pressure. Instead, they focus on remembering, celebrating and connecting. Since launching in 2019, Parting Stone has served over 12,000 families and partnered with more than 1,000 funeral homes. The company continues to reshape how families approach legacy—thoughtfully and intentionally. ————————————————————————–—— for more info, visit: partingstone.com

greater good SL When a cancer diagnosis steals the joy of the holidays, hope becomes more than a sentiment — it becomes the most meaningful gift of all. For many facing cancer, a season meant for warmth and celebration can suddenly feel cold, isolating and unbearably heavy. Mimi Tran, founder of the Me Squared Cancer Foundation, knows this reality all too well. After enduring a grueling battle with triple-negative breast cancer in 2018, she emerged with a mission to turn her pain into purpose. She created a lifeline for newly diagnosed adults across the Dallas–Fort Worth area, offering vital educational resources and financial assistance to ease their burden and restore a sense of possibility. What began as one woman’s fight to reclaim dignity and support during her darkest days has grown into an organization that lights the way for hundreds — delivering comfort, strength and the powerful promise of hope when it is needed most.

“I didn’t know what to do. I had to deal with everything on my own.” For countless people facing a new cancer diagnosis, those words echo the fear and isolation that arrive long before treatment begins. Me Squared Foundation exists to meet patients in that overwhelming moment, offering compassion and resources when they are needed most. Created to support newly diagnosed cancer patients, they step in with practical assistance and human connection. “I am very thankful and grateful for Me Squared. They are a foundation that cares and they are people who want to help,” one patient shared.

FIGHTING FOR OTHERS

Me Squared Foundation founder Mimi Tran’s journey did not begin in comfort. Born in Da Nang, Vietnam, she arrived in the United States at age six, fleeing war and hardship. Her family settled in New Orleans before eventually making their way to Texas—her father flew helicopters and her mother was raising their children under challenging circumstances. This immigrant story shaped her worldview that success carries responsibility, and privilege demands giving back. Mimi has built a successful career in banking,

Me Squared Cancer Foundation is a federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit with a singular mission to offer immediate financial relief and practical support to adults newly diagnosed with cancer across DFW. They focus on covering essential, treatment-related expenses like medical bills, diagnostic fees and transportation, also lodging and basic living needs so patients can concentrate on healing, rather than debt. Me Squared directs the vast majority of its funds directly to patient care. The foundation’s structure is intentionally lean, powered largely by volunteers, ensuring that each donation has maximum impact. Its mission is not only to reduce the financial burden of cancer, but also to restore dignity during the most vulnerable phase of a patient’s journey.

holding leadership roles at major banking institutions such as J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, Frost Bank, and currently Texas Regional Bank. She also immersed herself in community work from the Irving Healthcare Foundation to the Carroll Education Foundation. Then in 2018 came a diagnosis that changed everything: triple-negative breast cancer. Prolonged chemotherapy, surgery, radiation and the realization that surviving cancer is only the beginning. It was during one of those grueling chemo sessions that she asked the question that

would define her legacy: What about those who don’t have the means she had? Me Squared Cancer Foundation

LAUNCHING HOPE

In 2019, still in treatment, Mimi launched the Me Squared Cancer Foundation. Its mission is straightforward—help adults newly diagnosed with cancer in the DFW region by providing financial assistance for medical bills, transportation, lodging, and related needs, and educational resources so they can focus on healing. The structure

is intentionally lean with only one full-time executive director and a part-time project manager—the rest of the work relies on volunteers. This efficiency ensures that the lion’s share of donations go directly to those in need. According to the foundation, 84 % of every dollar spent last year went straight to patients’ medical bills or comforts during treatment.

ME SQUARED

Since its founding, the foundation has steadily expanded. In its first few years, Me Squared awarded grants to 391 patients, distributing nearly $922,000 in aid. In 2023 alone, the foundation provided over $200,000 in financial help. The impact goes beyond numbers. Testimonials from patients underscore the emotional and practical relief. On the foundation’s homepage, one recipient wrote, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude for your amazing contribution that zeroed out my hospital bill.” And another said simply: “...and because of Me Squared, and the financial assistance, I can move forward with my treatment plan.”

BUILDING COMMUNITY

What sets Me Squared apart is not just the financial aid, but the dignity it preserves. Payments are made directly to treatment providers, eliminating delays and ensuring patients don’t have to choose between care and everyday costs. The foundation doesn’t discriminate—it serves patients regardless of cancer type, insurance status, gender, race or background as long as their income hovers around 250% of the poverty level or below, and they live within its 11-county DFW service area. As a highly community-driven nonprofit, Me Squared relies heavily on partners and supporters. One recent example: the foundation’s

2025 “Blaze Award,” which recognizes individuals or organizations whose donations and support significantly further its mission. That award was presented by Mimi herself at the foundation’s Black & White Gala. In annual events like silent auctions and benefit galas, supporters gather to raise funds, not only providing immediate relief for patients but building a network of empathy and solidarity across the region. Me Squared Cancer Foundation

A PERSONAL MISSION

Mimi’s commitment is deeply personal. She often speaks of her family’s refugee beginnings, her parents’ sacrifice, and the gratitude she carries every day for the opportunities she’s been given. And, that gratitude fuels her dedication to Me Squared — and underscores each act of support. Now in remission, she continues her banking career (currently as Market President at Texas Regional Bank Southlake) while devoting significant energy to Me Squared, as well as other community organizations. On her own blog on the foundation’s site, she sometimes closes with “Live Laugh Love”—a simple motto that belies the depth of what she’s built.

BURDENS LIFTED

For patients just hearing the word “cancer,” treatment is only part of the battle. For many, the stress of medical debt, daily living and transportation costs becomes a secondary, but very real burden. Me Squared alleviates that burden, allowing people to focus on what matters most— healing. In a community as large and diverse as Dallas–Fort Worth, where tens of thousands of new cancer cases are diagnosed each year, support systems like Me Squared fill a crucial gap. The foundation’s

overhead remains low, their volunteers are the backbone, and almost every dollar donated goes toward patient care.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth,” Muhammad Ali once said, a sentiment that reflects the heart of Me Squared volunteers. These dedicated individuals are the backbone of the organization, giving time and talents to ensure patients feel seen, supported and cared for, while maximizing the impact of every donated dollar. Volunteer Kelly Rose, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, shares that giving back has become her purpose, as supporting newly diagnosed patients through one of life’s hardest journeys inspires her to work even harder. Me Squared Foundation welcomes compassionate volunteers who are ready to make a meaningful difference. Hope doesn’t come wrapped, but it can arrive when needed most. This season, when the world seems full of twinkling lights and festive cheer, spare a thought for those who may be far from that joy. For some wrestling with cancer and staggering medical bills, the holidays can feel like a cruel reminder of everything they’ve lost. That’s why the work of Mimi Tran and Me Squared Cancer Foundation is so vital. Through resilience born of personal hardship and driven by compassion, Mimi hasn’t just survived, she created a lifeline. Me Squared doesn’t hand out gifts under a tree. Instead, it offers something far more precious—hope, relief and dignity. And for those battling cancer, that might just be the greatest holiday gift of all. ————————————————–––—

Top Cabins in Texas For Your

WINTER GETAWAY When the chill of winter rolls around, there’s nothing I love more than escaping to a cozy cabin getaway. Texas has so many incredible options—from rustic retreats hidden in the woods to luxurious cabins with private hot tubs and breathtaking views. Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a family-friendly spot, or just a quiet place to recharge, there’s a cabin for everyone. Join me as I explore some of the top cabins in Texas to stay this winter and share why each one makes the season even sweeter.

When it comes to finding the perfect winter cabin, I like to focus on a few key things to make the experience unforgettable. Location is a big one—whether it’s tucked deep in the woods for total tranquility or close to attractions like scenic trails, charming small towns, or local wineries that add a little extra magic to the trip. Amenities matter too, from a cozy fireplace that sets the mood to a hot tub where I can unwind after a chilly day of exploring. I also always check customer reviews for honest insights about the space, the host, and the overall vibe, and of course, I keep my budget in mind so the getaway feels balanced and stress-free. Considering these factors helps ensure the cabin isn’t just a place to stay but a true winter haven where I can relax, recharge, and feel completely at home. HILL COUNTRY GETAWAY ——————————————————————————————————— Gratitude Glamping Cabin Located within the peaceful 13 Acres Wellness Center in Dripping Springs, Texas, the Gratitude Glamping Cabin feels like a true winter sanctuary to me. It’s the perfect spot to slow down, quiet my mind, and recharge my energy. Whether I’m craving a solo retreat or planning a romantic getaway, this place checks all the boxes. During the winter, the outdoor open-sky hot showers are such a magical experience—there’s something refreshing and invigorating about that contrast of crisp air and warm water. I love starting my mornings with a yoga class or a peaceful hike through the forest trails, followed by a steaming cup of coffee from the cozy on-site cafe. The breathtaking views, the butterfly garden, and even the unique handmade finds at the Tribe Market make every moment here feel special. Winter seems to add an extra layer of tranquility to the surroundings, making this cabin an ideal haven to relax and reconnect, either with yourself or someone you love.

Bohemian Hill Country Cottage Mosaic Farms’ Bohemian Hill Country Cottage is easily one of the most cheerful places I’ve stayed, and it’s perfect for brightening up the winter season. From the moment I saw the pink A-frame exterior, I knew this place was something special. Inside, the vibrant decor and quirky furniture instantly lift my spirits, making the cottage feel like a cozy, whimsical retreat. The unique staircase ladder leading to the upstairs bedroom adds such a fun touch, and with two bedrooms and a sofa bed in the living room, there’s plenty of space to relax. This cottage really turns winter into a season of color, flavor and joy. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s an experience that brings cheer to chilly days.

PET FRIENDLY CABINS ————————————————————————————————– Moonshiner Cabin The Moonshiner Cabin is one of the most unique Texas Hill Country cabins I’ve stayed in, and it feels like stepping into another time. Lovingly crafted by property owners Jennifer and Gregory, this retreat blends the intrigue of the Prohibition Era. Gregory hand-built the cabin, and it’s full of rustic charm while still offering all the modern comforts I could want— Wi-Fi, cable TV, and even an award-winning Casper mattress that will guarantee a good night’s sleep. What makes it such a perfect getaway in winter is the mix of cozy and cool. The hot tub is a perfect place to warm up on a chilly evening, and the fire pit invites me to relax under the stars with a blanket and a mug of something warm. It’s the ideal balance of quirky style, comfort and serenity. Log Cabin on Smith Creek The Log Cabin on Smith Creek is just a short drive from downtown Wimberley. This one-bedroom log cabin feels like stepping into a romantic, rustic retreat with all the modern comforts I could ask for. The cedar canopy bed, handcrafted by the owner, adds a special personal touch that makes the space feel even more inviting. What truly makes this cabin a perfect winter getaway for me is the cozy wood-burning stove, which creates a warm and intimate atmosphere when the temperatures drop. I love soaking in the hot tub on chilly nights, gazing up at the stars without a care in the world. Taking a crisp walk along Smith Creek, wrapped in winter’s calm, is also such a peaceful way to start the day. (continued)

TEXAS WOODLAND RETREATS ———————————————————————————— Caddo Shores Cabins If you’re looking for lakeside cabins then checkout Caddo Shores Cabins, nestled alongside the serene Caddo Lake. Each cabin offers a one-of-a-kind cabin experience, complete with modern comforts like AC, fully equipped kitchens, and Wi-Fi, making it easy to settle in and relax. My favorite is the Shipwreck, a unique two-deck houseboat transformed from a World War II transport boxcar. With its cozy vibe and lakeside views, it’s the perfect location for a quiet winter escape. The cooler weather makes canoeing on the lake, fishing from the pier, or exploring nearby nature trails even more refreshing. Naturalist Boudoir The Naturalist Boudoir Cabin has to be one of the most romantic and memorable places I’ve stayed. One of my favorite parts was the outdoor hot tub—it’s an absolute dream to soak in the warmth while surrounded by the cool stillness of nature. Inside the cabin, the abundance of windows floods the space with natural light, even on shorter winter days. The swinging bed itself is such a unique feature, and lying on it while staring out at the views made me feel completely relaxed and at ease. Even though the cabin gives off a rustic vibe, it’s packed with modern amenities like heating, air conditioning, an indoor restroom, and even an outdoor shower for those who don’t mind

a bit of brisk adventure. The lack of Wi-Fi was actually a blessing for me. It gave me and my partner the perfect chance to unplug, slow down, and enjoy uninterrupted time together. WEST TEXAS ESCAPES ———————————————————————————— Fossil Knob Ridge Fossil Knob Ridge in Terlingua is hands down one of the most memorable places I’ve stayed. The tiny home sits perched atop a cliff, and the experience of waking up to floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking that breathtaking landscape is beyond words. On chilly nights, I love curling up in bed while nature’s beauty unfolds right outside the glass. Winter here feels extra special. The crisp air makes the views even sharper and the nights perfect for stargazing. Despite its remote location, Fossil Knob Ridge doesn’t lack any modern comforts. They’ve got fast Wi-Fi and a fully equipped kitchen makes it easy to whip up a warm meal. There’s also always plenty of hot water, which is a lifesaver after a day of exploring nearby Terlingua. Boca de la Roca Private Mountain Lodge Boca de la Roca Mountain Lodge is tucked at the base of a 4,700-foot mountain in Big Bend National Park. What truly makes this place special for me is its commitment to sustainability. The cabin is completely off-grid, running entirely on

quaint charm, kayaked, and even tried tubing along the Guadalupe River, which added a bit of thrill to the trip. 7F Lodge 7F Lodge is one of those places that instantly captures your heart. This family-run retreat in College Station is all about fostering connection, which felt even more meaningful during the cooler months. Each of their uniquely themed cabins offers a cozy escape, perfect for curling up and enjoying time with loved ones. What really stood out to me was the intentional absence of TVs and Wi-Fi. At first, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it, but it turned out to be one of the best parts. Instead, we immersed ourselves in the simple joys of their indulgent jacuzzi tub, played board games, laughed over the thoughtful question cards, and flipped through the books stocked in the cabin. It’s rare to find a place so perfectly designed to help you slow down and reconnect for some family fun and quality time. ———————————————————————————–

Winter’s cooler temperatures will actually make the experience even better. Whether you’re enjoying the breathtaking views while bundled up with a hot drink or simply soaking in the stillness of the desert, everything feels so calm and invigorating. FAMILY-FRIENDLY CABINS ———————————————————————————— Bird Haus Farms Bird Haus Farms which is near San Antonio, is one of those special places I can’t wait to visit again, especially in the winter. Owned by Luke and Michelle, a friendly and welcoming couple, the farm has a personal touch, which makes it feel right at home, perfect for a family vacation. I stayed in Hummingbird Haus, and it was perfect. The modern farmhouse vibe is both stylish and cozy, featuring a full bath, a fully furnished kitchen where I could whip up hearty meals, and reliable Wi-Fi to stay connected when needed. The mix of wide-open spaces and charming accommodations creates the perfect backdrop for a quiet winter getaway with family members, friends, or even just myself. The farm’s ideal location also opened up plenty of opportunities for adventure. I spent evenings stargazing under a sky so clear it felt magical. I explored downtown Bulverde’s

Unplugged & Peaceful Many Texas cabins offer modern conveniences like Wi-Fi and TVs, but it’s important to know that not all of them do—some owners intentionally leave out digital amenities to promote a deeper sense of rest, reflection, and connection. These unplugged stays encourage guests to slow down, enjoy the quiet, and truly immerse themselves in the natural surroundings. Our handpicked cabins in Texas are the perfect escape to relax and reconnect with nature, whether you’re seeking a cozy hideaway to curl up in or a scenic base for hiking, stargazing, and other outdoor adventures. And while much of the state enjoys relatively mild winters, regions in West Texas and higher elevations can experience colder conditions, including occasional freezing nights, adding an extra layer of cozy charm to your winter cabin experience. ———————————————————————————– Seasonal Adventures in the Lone Star State Looking for even more ways to make the most of the winter season? SNOWDAY DALLAS AT GALLERIA DALLAS

schedule. Tickets sell fast, especially on weekends and in the weeks closest to Christmas. Bonus tip: There are designated “value days” with reduced admission if you’re looking to save. Perfect for those who want unforgettable memories without the premium price tag. ————————————————————————————————————————– WHY: So what makes SNOWDAY worth your holiday calendar space? In a city where actual snow is a rare treat, this immersive experience offers something almost better—a handcrafted season spectacle built for memories. For locals, it’s nostalgia and a chance to relive those early-year school closures and snowy fantasies from youth. For parents, it’s a chance to capture holiday portraits that feel magical, not staged. For influencers and creatives, it’s a playground of color, light and texture that begs to be photographed. Judges and travel writers have taken notice, too. SNOWDAY has been recognized among the top things to do in Dallas in December, earning accolades for its joyful holiday spirit and boundless creativity. At its core, the event transforms holiday tradition from something passive like hanging ornaments or watching holiday movies into something active, social and sharable. It turns a mall into a winter carnival for all ages. ————————————————————————————————————————– HOW: Getting to SNOWDAY is easy, but here’s how to make the most of your visit with our insider tips for visiting and enjoying SNOWDAY to its fullest potential: .......................................................................................................................................................... • RESERVE YOUR TICKETS ONLINE IN ADVANCE. The exhibit is timed and often sells out, especially closer to Christmas Eve. .......................................................................................................................................................... • ARRIVE EARLY IN YOUR TIMESLOT. Arriving about 15 minutes before your scheduled entry helps ease check-in and gets you into the magic faster. .......................................................................................................................................................... • BRING YOUR CAMERA (OR JUST YOUR PHONE). Photo ops are everywhere and professional images from integrated cameras are sent directly to your device for free. .......................................................................................................................................................... • CONSIDER COMBO TICKETS Consider combo tickets if you want to combine SNOWDAY with SANTALAND for a complete holiday experience, but SANTALAND closes after Christmas Eve. .......................................................................................................................................................... • VISIT ON WEEKDAYS OR VALUE DAYS To avoid heavy crowds and snag the best quiet moments for pictures we suggest a visit on a weekday or value day. .......................................................................................................................................................... • PLAN FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR Although the official walkthrough lasts about an hour, allow time for parking, browsing the gift shop and soaking up the entire experience. .......................................................................................................................................................... The bottom line is that SNOWDAY Dallas isn’t just another holiday event—it’s becoming one of North Texas’ most beloved seasonal traditions, the kind families pencil into their calendars long before the first ornament is hung. It’s where creativity meets nostalgia, where imagination takes center stage and where every turn offers a chance to freeze a moment you’ll want to frame later. Whether you’re chasing giggles from toddlers seeing “snow” for the first time or coaxing a smile out of grown-ups who still secretly believe in Santa, this immersive playground dishes out holiday magic with every step. From the glow of enchanted forests to whimsical photo portals and Santa’s cozy corner, SNOWDAY turns the simple act of taking pictures into a memory-making adventure. One snapshot at a time, it celebrates everything we love about the season—wonder, joy and just a little bit of make-believe. ————————————————————————————————————————– SNOWDAY Galleria Dallas | 13350 Dallas Pkwy., Dallas, Texas 75240 | snowdaydallas.com | (469) 759-9323 ————————————————————————————————————————–

SL WhereLocalsGo REVIEW BY JENNIFER SLOAN

SOHO

wine bar + restaurant SoHo Wine Bar + Kitchen quietly opened in late August, at 201 Town Center Lane, in the same space that housed FnG Eats for 12 years before it closed its doors earlier this year. Immediately, the arrival of SoHo was met with interest by many in Keller, a community in search of stylish, upscale dining options beyond the usual fast-casual fare. Coming from New York—the owners relocated from the Northeast—the vision for SoHo Wine Bar is intentionally ambitious: a “white tablecloth” atmosphere with a wait staff in all black, a curated wine list, seafood and Italian fare, all aiming to deliver elevated dining in a small-town-suburb setting. SoHo embraces a primarily Italian– inspired menu, but with a touch of “extra.” Think handcrafted pastas, pizzas, classics like Chicken Milanese and Parmigiana, alongside more sophisticated entrées like Braised Short Rib, Branzino Filet and a NY Strip. For starters and small bites, there are Italian-style offerings like Arancini and old-world style Nona’s Meatballs, but also a raw bar with oysters, shrimp, clams and crab—the owners’ nod to the Italian Coast. My not-to-be-missed appetizer is the Zucchini Flowers stuffed with cream cheese and crabmeat accompanied with a light tomato sauce. It’s just a bite of indulgence that prepares you for what’s to come. I also love options for vegetarians right off the bat. The Mozzarella di Burrata is creamy and light and served alongside a baby tomato confit, fresh herbs, pistachios in a surprising twist, and, of course, a drizzle of fine balsamic. If you’re after something more adventurous, the menu also features Asian-inspired

dishes such as mango-avocado Tuna Tower, Soba Noodles with a spicy peanut sauce and sesame-crusted Ahi Tuna with soy-ginger glaze. Diverse menu pairs well with a full bar that offers a global wine selection heavy on Tuscan reds, champagnes and ports, plus a hand crafted cocktail menu which shows off Soho’s ability to pay tribute to classics in a refreshing, modernized way. For the bourbon drinkers, the Game of Thrones is a take on a smoked old fashioned featuring a demerara syrup and cedar smoke. For the tequila savant, the Mexican Old Fashion is a sweet and spicy margarita with muddled jalapeno, fresh lime and orange juices and a dash of simple syrup to cut the heat—a smidge. My not-to-be-missed cocktail hails from the martini menu: the Fig Martini. Fig vodka is shaken with a balsamic reduction, house made sour mix and Saint Germain. It’s sweet and tangy, light and refreshing. Walking into SoHo Wine Bar, you quickly get the sense this is an attempt to deliver a cosmopolitan date-night vibe to Keller. The white-tablecloth, modestly upscale environment that’s paired with dim lighting and curated bar focus, gives it a more intentional energy than most of the local casual chains. For many locals, SoHo fills a void left when FnG Eats closed its doors—a loss that left Keller without a true “chef-driven” restaurant for the first time in more than a decade. SoHo’s arrival brings with it renewed hope, a refreshed sense of possibility, and—judging by the early buzz— proof that Keller was more than ready for its return to elevated dining.
