“A house is made of walls and beams — a home is built with love and dreams.”
September in North Texas may not bring instant sweater weather, but it does spark the anticipation of cooler days and cozier living. The autumn shift might arrive later here than in other parts of the country, but it’s no less welcome. Cooler mornings and shorter evenings invite us to embrace the season. For me and many others, home is more than walls and windows. It’s a sacred space—a reflection of who we are and what we value most. This issue celebrates the idea of home as sanctuary.
The local landscaping company featured on our cover of this issue is helping homeowners reimagine their yards by turning problem spaces into stunning retreats—finally transforming these outdoor landscapes from challenges into beauty. Check out five of the past projects that James Landscaping has completed starting on page 22. It’s a reminder that, just like life, even the toughest terrain can become something extraordinary with the right vision and care.

Of course, autumn in Texas also means outdoor season. Patios come alive as families gather with friends, and neighbors connect under the soft glow of string lights and the first hints of fall air. To spark ideas for your own backyard haven, we’ve pulled together trends that blend comfort with style—think layered textures, cozy fire features, and spaces designed for connection (page 29). And, fashion follows suit. Luxe layers are making their way back into our wardrobes, with rich fabrics and tailored pieces that reflect the season’s spirit of warmth and elegance (page 34). Just as we refresh our homes, fall reminds us it’s time to refresh ourselves as well.
September also brings a chance to reflect on deeper matters. As National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Awareness Month, we are honored to highlight Strong Tower—a faith-based nonprofit where strength truly begins. Their work offers hope, healing and restoration for individuals and families facing some of life’s hardest battles (page 43). Their mission is a reminder that even in the darkest seasons, new life and renewed purpose can take root. Finally for those seeking fresh challenges, our ‘6 Questions About’ column dives into the ‘World Series of Fitness Racing’ with HYROX—the fastest-growing fitness sport in the world (page 46). Are you up to the challenge?
As you turn these pages, I hope that you’ll feel inspired to embrace this season fully— at home, outdoors, in style, and in spirit. May this season also remind us that we share Society Life: One Community. Your Stories.

“My name is Bill Daniel, I'm 78-years-old, and I consider myself pretty active for my age. Golf has always been a big part of my life, and I play three times a week. In addition to golf, I enjoy going to the gym, weight training and doing what I can to stay healthy and moving.
A few years ago, I began feeling this lifestyle I enjoy so much slipping away. Pain in my right knee had become such a problem that I couldn't even walk without a brace. As time went on the pain persisted and increased to the point that I was in pain every day. I could feel the grinding in the joint, and deep down I knew it was only going to get worse. My doctor told me a knee replacement was in my future. At first, I just accepted that. I thought, 'Well, this is what happens when you get older... it's surgery and then months of rehab.' But honestly, I dreaded it. I had seen friends go through knee replacements, and the recovery process looked brutal. The idea of being sidelined for months no golf, no gym, nothing—was not something I wanted.
That’s when I was introduced to PEMF Recovery Plus.
DISCOVERING PEMF I learned that ‘PEMF’ stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. It is a technology that uses electromagnetic waves to stimulate and recharge your body’s cells, helping them repair and recover faster. People use it for pain relief, reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and even accelerating healing. When I first heard about it, I was skeptical. ‘How is lying on a mat with a machine running going to fix my knee?’ I remember thinking. It just didn't make sense to me at first. But at the same time, I figured I had nothing to lose.
REAL RELIEF, RIGHT AWAY After my first 12 sessions with PEMF Recovery Plus, something amazing happened. The pain in my knee was gone. Not lessened, not dulled—gone. –————
“I took off my brace and realized I didn't need it anymore. For the first time in years, I could walk without pain.”
I continued using PEMF consistently, and the results held steady. I was back to playing golf without pain. I could get up and down stairs without wincing. At the gym, I could do exercises I hadn't been able to do in a long time.
BEYOND THE KNEE While I was amazed by the reduction in pain in my knee, I could not believe what it did for my feet. I've had neuropathy for years—numbness, tingling and discomfort that made walking unpleasant. After a few weeks of PEMF, the feeling in my feet started coming back. The tingling was less, the numbness improved, and I could tell something was really changing. It wasn’t just masking pain—it was helping my body heal and function better.
A SURGERY AVOIDED The biggest benefit of all? I never had the suggested knee replacement surgery. I’ve got friends who had it done. They all endured months of rehab, limited mobility, and struggled to get back to normal. I avoided all of that. Thanks to PEMF, I never had to go under the knife. At 78, that’s life-changing. I didn’t lose months of my life to recovery. I didn't have to stop doing the things I love. I just kept living my life—pain-free.
SHARING THE RESULTS People noticed the difference right away. Friends saw me walking without a brace and asked 'What did you do?' My answer is always the same: PEMF Recovery Plus. Even my doctor was surprised by how much my mobility had improved. The results I have achieved have been amazing and don’t hesitate to recommend it to everyone I meet. If you’re facing surgery or living with pain, give PEMF a try first. It might just change everything for you, the way it did for me.
LIVING PROOF Today, I’m still golfing three times a week and I'm still working out at the gym. I don’t wear a brace. I don’t think about knee pain. At my age, being able to keep moving means everything. PEMF gave me my life back. That’s why I keep sharing my story. Because if PEMF Recovery Plus can help someone else avoid surgery, avoid pain, and get back to living the way they want— it's worth telling again and again. I’m living proof that PEMF works.”
Home is more than four walls and a roof. It is the place where life unfolds, where laughter lingers in the air, where tears are shed and comfort is found. For people of faith, home carries an even deeper calling — it is the sanctuary where Christ is welcomed daily, not just on Sunday or in worship, but in every ordinary moment.
When Scripture says, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15), it reminds us that our faith is not confined to a church pew. It is lived out around the dinner table, in the quiet of morning prayers, and in the way we love those who walk through our doors. A Christcentered home doesn’t mean perfection— it means presence. The presence of God is invited, acknowledged and honored.
A PLACE OF PRAYER One of the simplest, yet most profound, ways to root a home in faith is through prayer. Whether whispered in solitude before the day begins or shared aloud with children before bedtime, prayer opens the heart and the household to God’s guidance. These rhythms of prayer create an atmosphere where peace is nurtured, even when the world outside feels uncertain.
A SPIRIT OF HOSPITALITY The Christian home also reflects Christ through hospitality. Welcoming others—neighbors, friends or even strangers—is a reflection of the open
arms of Jesus. Hospitality does not require a perfect house or a gourmet meal. It is about making space for others, offering warmth, listening well and sharing what God has provided. A pot of soup and a willing heart can preach the gospel more clearly than many words.
PASSING FAITH TO THE NEXT GENERATION Within the walls of home, faith is often caught more than taught. Children learn about God not only from Bible stories, but from watching their parents forgive quickly, serve humbly and trust God in difficulties. Even small traditions—a candle lit at Advent, Scripture read before school, a hymn sung together— plant seeds of faith that grow over a lifetime. These practices form spiritual habits that root children in the truth that God’s presence is with them wherever they go.
LIVING WITH INTEGRITY AND GRACE A Christian home is not free of conflict, but it is marked by grace. Mistakes are met with forgiveness, disagreements resolved with patience, and
daily routines carried out with honesty. In doing so, the household becomes a living testimony that Christ’s love is practical and transformative, not just theological.
LIGHT OF THE WORLD Ultimately, the Christian home is not meant to be a closed circle, but a beacon. Jesus calls His people the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), and that light often shines first from within our homes. When faith saturates daily life—meals, conversations, celebrations, even chores— the home becomes a living witness. Visitors sense something different—a peace not of this world, a joy not dependent on circumstances, and a love that points to Christ.
In the end, building a home rooted in Christian faith is less about design and more about devotion. It is less about what hangs on the walls and more about the Spirit who fills the rooms. A Christcentered home doesn’t just shelter a family—it shelters God’s love, radiating warmth to all who enter.

Author Emily Redondo’s forthcoming memoir titled Wife Mother Drunk: An Intergenerational Memoir of Loss and Love (release date Nov. 14, 2025) is a searingly honest and profoundly moving exploration of addiction, motherhood, and inherited trauma. The book, written with unflinching candor, traces not only the author’s own harrowing struggle with alcoholism, but also the deep ancestral roots of pain that stretch back to the pioneer days, when the seeds of generational trauma were first sown.
On the surface, Emily looked like every other suburban mom—managing dance bags, school schedules, and the rhythms of family life in a minivan. But behind closed doors, she was caught in a relentless battle with alcohol. Drinking from morning until night, stealing bottles from liquor stores, and even enduring a DUI arrest with her young child in the backseat, Emily’s reality was far removed from the one that she presented to the outside world. Her descent reached a devastating low when, after the birth of her fourth child, she entered rehab carrying both a breast pump and the weight of knowing her newborn was just five weeks old at home.
What makes “Wife Mother Drunk” so extraordinary is how it extends beyond
Emily’s personal account to confront the wider history of female addiction. With remarkable vulnerability, Emily Redondo investigates how generations of women in her family endured heartbreak and trauma while always placing their children first, often at the expense of their own well-being. By examining those dusty-earth roots, she reveals how her own addiction was not an isolated battle but the culmination of long-unresolved pain passed down through the women before her. Unlike much of the so-called “quit lit,” Emily’s story resists a tidy resolution. Sobriety didn’t come in a single epiphany for her, but through decades of relapse, 20 institutions, heartbreaking diagnoses, and the lasting neurological damage of alcohol use. She walks what she describes as an awkward, yet gentle road toward recovery—one filled with vulnerability, self-reckoning, and a fierce love for her children.
At its core, “Wife Mother Drunk” is both devastating and hopeful. It is a portrait of a woman wrestling with disease, but also of a mother determined to break the cycle of generational trauma for the sake of her family. Emily Redondo offers readers not just her story, but a vital reminder that recovery, though often imperfect, is possible—and that love can be the most powerful force of all.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Emily Redondo is a writer, bookworm, and proud mother of four whose articles on recovery and motherhood have been featured in Love What Matters, Genius Recovery, and Legacy Launchpad. Her interests include gardening, camping, collecting antique curiosities, and tinkering with her latest DIY project in her workshop. She lives with her husband, Pete, and their lively household in McKinney, Texas.

James Landscaping
North Texas homeowners know that a yard can present just as many challenges as it does possibilities. Steep slopes, stubborn shade, drainage issues, and patchy grass often leave outdoor spaces underused — or even worse, eyesores. But with the right expertise, those same yards can be transformed into functional, beautiful retreats. Here, we take a look at five local standout projects completed by the expert team at James Landscaping, where ordinary and even problem-plagued properties were reimagined and revitalized. From clever water management and hardscape solutions to thoughtful plantings that thrive in our extreme climate, these transformations showcase how a professional touch can solve real problems while also creating spaces that homeowners are proud to enjoy and call their own.
Our 1st featured property belongs to long-time James Landscaping clients who faced a familiar North Texas challenge — a heavily shaded yard. Their corner lot was graced with towering trees that kept the space cool even on the hottest afternoons, but beneath that canopy the lawn told a different story. Bare patches, soil erosion, and an overall drab appearance left the outdoor space both unattractive and underused. For years, the homeowners tried to grow grass in the shaded area without success. Turning eventually to James Landscaping to reclaim the lawn, and finally unlock its potential. As the homeowners shared: –
“We have had a rewarding relationship with James Landscaping for almost 20 years. Their work is creative, practical, and thoughtful, and the crews consistently help maintain our property as if it were their own.”
–
FROM DRAB TO FAB | The first step was to embrace the property’s best feature—the trees—and design around them. Rather than fighting nature, the team introduced ground cover that thrives in shade, stabilizing soil and preventing erosion. Shade-loving plants such as ferns, Japanese maples, redbuds, oakleaf hydrangeas and dogwoods added color, texture and depth to the once-barren ground. To make the space welcoming and functional, the team installed a winding flagstone walkway on decomposed granite, leading to a quiet sitting area anchored by a custom stone bench. A raised dry-stack stone bed creates a graceful buffer from the busy corner, while a meandering path encourages exploration. Together, elements draw visitors in, making it hard to imagine just lawn there now.
CULTIVATING TRUST | This project was built on trust developed over years of collaboration. The homeowners worked with James Landscaping on past projects and relied on their scheduled maintenance services. When the design was presented, the decision came easily. That trust was the result of long-standing relationships and a clear understanding of preferences and capabilities, which made the process seamless. The results speak for themselves—the once-struggling yard is now lush, low-maintenance and water-efficient. The trees once seen as a problem have become the natural centerpiece, beautifully framed by carefully chosen plantings.
SUSTAINED VALUE | This transformation didn’t just end with installation. James Landscaping continues to maintain the property with its signature bed maintenance service, ensuring plants are trimmed naturally, sprinklers work properly, weeds are controlled, and lighting remains in top form—all handled by one highly trained team. A key part of this ongoing care is MicroLife organic fertilizer. Free of chicken manure and packed with nutrients, MicroLife strengthens the soil, keeps plants healthy, and is safe for people and pets alike. The company’s philosophy is simple: the basis of any landscape is healthy soil, and nothing works as effectively as MicroLife.
Our 2nd featured project combined smart design, sustainable principles and the timeless elements of Japanese gardens — water, stone and greenery — within a small suburban yard. The homeowner of Japanese descent, envisioned a peaceful retreat that honored heritage while offering an escape. Though a steep slope and central swale posed challenges, the team embraced the natural contours to create a layered design rooted in traditional Japanese garden principles. The homeowner recalled:
“The beautiful pictures of James Landscaping's work caught my eye in Society Life. When it was time to renovate my yard, I contacted them and the results were fabulous. I told them I wanted a tranquil backyard, something beautiful. The design was amazing, and the result simply breathtaking. The next step was to transform my front yard into something that stood out in my subdivision. No more cookie cutter front yard! Everyone at James Landscaping is great to work with. They truly listen to their clients and really know their stuff. I am so glad I called them!”
MOUNTAIN VIEWS & FLOWING WATER | To mimic mountainous landscapes often seen in Japan, a moss boulder retaining wall was built at the upper level, complemented by patio holly trees. This borrowed-scenery effect gave the garden depth and dimension. Below, a dry creek bed meanders through the yard, managing stormwater while adding natural beauty. Two walkable bridges—a wooden arched bridge and a stone slab bridge—ensured safe passage while enhancing the garden’s charm. A boulder fountain became the focal point, offering both soothing sounds and a natural drinking spot for birds, bringing movement and life to the garden.
PRESERVING WHAT MATTERS | Thoughtful integration of existing features was key. A cherished Japanese maple remained a centerpiece, while a mature Chinese Pistache was encircled with a flagstone walkway joined with decomposed granite. This mortar-free design ensured a natural look and lasting durability. Evergreens and perennials were added for seasonal vibrancy, promising color and texture year-round.
PRACTICAL & SUSTAINABLE | Function was carefully balanced with beauty. Drip irrigation provides efficient watering in the two-level layout, avoiding overspray on walkways. Strategic lighting allows safe evening walks while highlighting garden features after dark. James Landscaping maintains the garden with organic fertilizers, careful trimming, seasonal color updates, and regular irrigation checks— an approach that nurtures soil microbes and eliminates harsh chemicals. With expert maintenance in place, the retreat will flourish for years, growing more beautiful as plantings mature. This project illustrates the power of blending cultural heritage, sustainability and creativity. For homeowners dreaming of their own backyard escape, James Landscaping proves that with vision and expertise, any outdoor space can become a sanctuary.
For our 3rd featured property transformation, James Landscaping transformed a steep, problematic yard into a lush retreat for gathering. By working in thoughtful phases, the team not only solved functional issues, but also created a landscape that has matured beautifully over the years. According to the homeowners:
“For years we had a long-standing drainage problem that on several occasions overwhelmed our existing drainage system and threatened to flood our house. With frequency of severe storms increasing, we contacted James Landscaping for a solution. They provided an innovative design that solved drainage problems and also provided an aesthetically pleasing environment. We spend much time now enjoying our yard. And when it really rains hard, we have a functional creek!”
SLIPPERY SLOPE | The property began with a serious challenge—a steeply sloped backyard that pitched from back to front and side to side. Constant soil erosion from heavy rains washed away nutrients and left unstable ground. A railroad tie retaining wall made the problem worse. Once considered practical, railroad ties are now known to leach toxic creosote into soil while offering little structural reliability. The solution started with a properly engineered stone retaining wall designed to withstand the hillside’s immense pressure. The team also re-graded the yard to redirect water safely across the property. With the ground stabilized, a flagstone patio and shade arbor add functionality—turning a hazardous slope into a usable space.
| A hallmark of James Landscaping’s work is their ability to build projects in thoughtful stages, ensuring landscapes adapt naturally to the way homeowners live. This yard is a textbook example. Phase one addressed the most pressing issues—erosion control with a retaining wall and improved usability with a patio. Phase two introduced a dry creek bed to manage water flow and plants that thrive beneath mature shade trees. Instead of a patchy lawn, the lower yard now has layered greenery that stays vibrant year-round. Over time, neighbors began gathering here, and eventually James Landscaping was hired to extend the design next door. Now, a charming flagstone path links the two homes, creating an easy connection between friends and a shared outdoor retreat.
CARE & GROOMING | Design and installation are only the first steps—long-term care is what allows landscapes to reach full potential. James Landscaping provides ongoing maintenance—from bed grooming and seasonal color to organic fertilization. Unlike synthetic products, organic fertilizers enrich the soil with beneficial microbes, strengthening plants against Texas’ extreme weather. With consistent care, the investment that these homeowners made in their property continues to thrive.
FROM PROBLEM TO PARADISE | What began as a dangerously unstable hillside is now a thriving neighborhood destination—a testament to smart design, patient planning and expert care, proving that even the toughest yards can be transformed into places where people love to live and connect. (SEE PROJECT #4 ON NEXT PAGE) BEFORE
With more than three decades of expertise, James Landscaping has built a reputation for creating landscapes that balance beauty, function and sustainability. Our 4th featured property is a shining example — a conventional grass lawn that was transformed into a vibrant, low maintenance retreat that delights the eye, while also supporting the environment. Homeowners Mike and Judy Parrish have worked with James Landscaping for over a decade, appreciating their creativity, professionalism and meticulous workmanship. The Parrish’s noted:
“James Landscaping is the perfect company to do business with. They are flexible, transparent and highly professional. And best of all, they listen to the customer's input.”
–
| These long-time clients envisioned a landscape that was both attractive and resource efficient. Working closely with James Landscaping’s design team, they reimagined their front yard with thoughtful hardscape features, including a circular driveway and a dry creek bed to direct rainwater while adding texture and movement. Everyday elements also got an upgrade—a custom stone mailbox and new flagstone walkway now provide convenience and curb appeal. The true artistry lies in the plant palette. The grass lawn was replaced with a carefully curated mix of native and highly adapted plants designed to thrive in our challenging climate. Seasonal perennials provide color throughout the year, while lantanas and sage draw butterflies, catmint attracts bees, and Turk’s Cap entices hummingbirds. These choices not only reduce maintenance, but also support vital pollinators and enrich the property’s biodiversity. The result is a lush, resilient landscape that works with nature instead of against it.
| For James Landscaping’s team, installation is only the beginning. Their signature horticultural care ensures landscapes continue to thrive year after year. Organic fertilization is tailored to each property’s soil and plant mix to strengthen roots, boost blooms and build resilience. Expert crews handle weeding, trimming and mulching to protect plant health, conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature. Recognizing the importance of efficient water use in North Texas, they also provide sprinkler inspections to prevent waste and ensure precise irrigation. Their care extends into the evening with lighting maintenance that keeps outdoor spaces safe, secure and beautifully illuminated after dark.
| Behind every transformation is a team with decades of experience. Many James Landscaping employees have been with the company for more than 20 years, bringing consistency, pride and unmatched skill to each project. Their professionalism and attention to detail reflect a culture where crews truly take ownership of their work, and clients can see that commitment in every finished design. This long-term experience allows the company to observe how landscapes evolve over time, adding to a deep knowledge base that informs each new project.
| North Texas homeowners know weather extremes often make landscaping here a challenge. James Landscaping stands out by embracing the environment in their designs instead of opposing it. Their projects aren’t temporary fixes— they’re enduring investments in beauty, property value and ecological health. What was once an ordinary lawn is a sustainable sanctuary— an outdoor space designed to flourish season after season.
When homeowners Dave and Lynda Kennedy moved into our 5th featured project, their side and back yards were more headache than haven. Poor drainage, bare patches and harsh glare made them unusable. James Landscaping solved problems while also creating beautiful, functional areas to enjoy. According to the Kennedys:
“The creativity of James Landscaping has provided us with a very beautiful and enjoyable outdoor space!”
SIDE YARD SHOWPIECE | Side yards often become neglected strips of land— left unaddressed they can create big problems. On this property, poor drainage was the culprit. On a zero-lot-line, water from the neighbor’s yard left the side yard soggy and lifeless with utilities in full view. Water has to go somewhere and if the soil isn’t stabilized, the water takes the soil with it. Their team built a dry-stack retaining wall to hold lush greenery, and a level walkway one tier below. Flagstones, river rock, and a French drain turned the path into both a garden walk and a creek bed that channels water away. Perennial plantings now bring color year-round.
BACKYARD RETREAT | A new creek bed fixed backyard drainage, capturing runoff redirecting it down the side. To tame heat and glare from a tall retaining wall, they planted magnolias, to cool the space and soften views. Plantings added texture and color, while a magnolia near the patio replaced a messy crape myrtle.
DESIGNED FOR LIVING | For James Landscaping, success means more than just curb appeal—it’s about creating spaces that work for the whole family. This once-problematic yard is now a pair of inviting retreats, proving that with the right vision, even neglected areas can become the highlight of a home.
Whether your yard suffers from stubborn bare spots, awkward layouts, or bigger issues like erosion and flooding, James Landscaping can turn it into a beautiful, functional retreat. Since 1989, their team’s been crafting personalized landscape designs that blend expert craftsmanship, sustainable practices, and thoughtful plant selection. From patios and walkways to ponds, water features, lighting, arbors, retaining walls, irrigation, and drainage solutions, they manage every detail to create outdoor spaces that are stunning and built to last. Their commitment goes beyond design — they ensure each landscape remains vibrant and healthy over time through organic fertilizers and attentive plant care. The result is a flourishing garden you’ll enjoy for years to come. Contact James Landscaping today and let their team transform your yard into a striking, functional landscape worthy of a magazine cover.

When the crisp air of autumn arrives, nothing draws people outdoors like the glow of a fire. In this season, homeowners are investing in fire pits, fire bowls, and full-scale outdoor fireplaces to extend their time outdoors. Portable propane models make it easy to bring warmth to patios, while custom-built stone fireplaces serve as a focal point for gatherings. Beyond ambiance, fire features encourage connection — whether roasting marshmallows with the kids or sipping wine with friends. For design lovers, sleek modern concrete bowls or rustic stacked stone pits can match any style while also turning cooler evenings into cherished outdoor moments.
Summer may get the credit for grilling season, but fall is when outdoor kitchens shine. With football tailgates, family gatherings and all the holiday feasts approaching, homeowners are turning to smokers, pizza ovens, and even built-in griddles to elevate outdoor cooking. Rich flavors of roasted root vegetables, woodfired pizzas, and slow-smoked meats make cooler Texas weather entertaining ideal. More outdoor kitchens now include prep stations, warming drawers, and covered seating, making sure the chef stays in the conversation. As dining shifts from indoors to out, the kitchen becomes the heartbeat of the patio — blending flavor, function and festivity into every meal.
3
4mix it up
Shorter days don’t have to mean shorter evenings outside. Thoughtful lighting design is a major trend this fall, with homeowners layering ambient, task, and accent lighting to create warmth and depth. String lights remain popular for their charm, but many are upgrading to weatherproof LED strands for durability. Lanterns and solar path lights add a welcoming glow, while uplighting trees and highlighting architectural features bring drama. Beyond aesthetics, good lighting enhances safety for family and guests. The result is an inviting atmosphere where we can linger well after sunset — and outdoor spaces that feel as usable at night as they do by day.
Fall outdoor living embraces comfort, and this year it’s all about texture. Designers are layering weather-resistant wicker furniture with reclaimed wood tables, wrought iron frames, and stone accents to create visual richness. Cozy textiles take center stage with chunky knit throws, sherpa cushions, and faux-fur pillows that add warmth and style while making patios feel like indoor living rooms. Neutral furniture palettes allow fall layers to pop in earthy rusts, golds and greens. This tactile mix transforms outdoor seating into an inviting retreat, encouraging gathering under stars as temperatures drop. Function meets fashion in this outdoor trend.
Summer blooms may fade, but fall planting brings its own rich beauty. Homeowners turn to seasonal container gardens to refresh patios, porches, and outdoor kitchens. Vibrant mums in shades of burgundy and gold, ornamental kale with ruffled purple leaves, and feathery grasses add dimension and drama. Planting in layered containers allows for easy swaps as the season changes, ensuring color through Thanksgiving. Strategically placed pots can define outdoor “rooms” or frame entryways for maximum impact. Combined with pumpkins, gourds and rustic baskets, these plantings celebrate the season and can seamlessly blend with both traditional and modern landscapes.
Autumn weather can be unpredictable—sunny afternoons quickly give way to chilly breezes. That’s why more homeowners are investing in covered patios, pergolas, and retractable shade systems. These structures create flexible, sheltered outdoor spaces ideal for year-round entertaining. Draped pergolas add intimacy, while screened porches protect against falling leaves and insects. Modern pergolas that have adjustable louvers even let you control sunlight and airflow with the push of a button. Beyond comfort, these additions boost property value and extend livability of a home. With the right cover, patios transform into four-season rooms, making fall gatherings doable in any weather.
Today’s outdoor spaces aren’t just patios— they’re destinations. The biggest trend this fall is designing yards with multiple zones for lounging, dining and recreation. A seating area with a fire pit becomes the conversation hub, while an outdoor dining space hosts family dinners under twinkle lights. Nearby, open areas allow for kids to play or adults to stretch out with yoga mats. Thoughtful pathways and landscaping connect spaces, encouraging flow and exploration. Layered environments transform the backyard into an extension of the home itself. By giving every family member a reason to be outside, the trend keeps everyone engaged longer.
Fall fashion isn’t the only place where earthy tones dominate. Outdoor living spaces are embracing palettes inspired by nature — rich rust, deep olive, mustard gold, and plum paired with warm wood, natural stone, and aged copper accents. Furniture finishes lean toward matte and weathered textures, while fabrics reflect the season with warm neutrals and jewel tones. Natural materials like liveedge wood tables, woven baskets, and stone planters create a grounded, organic feel. This design approach not only echoes the colors of autumn, but also ensures timeless style. By blending earthy tones and natural accents, spaces can feel both seasonal and enduring.
Autumn’s edit celebrates bold textures, refined silhouettes and statement pieces from curated brands including Diomi, Oo La La, Alberto, and Anatomie. From plush, reversible furs in a spectrum of unexpected colors to tailored menswear and womenswear, each look is designed to elevate autumn style with modern luxury and timeless appeal — all from XAR Clothier.
More than just a place of worship, Strong Tower Ministries in Hitchcock, Texas stands as a beacon of hope and transformation. Rooted in faith and guided by Christ's healing power, this non-profit organization embraces those battling life controlling issues, offering them not only a place of spiritual refuge — but a path to recovery.
Strong Tower Ministries offers a 12-month, faith-based residential program for men and women facing life-controlling struggles such as addiction, homelessness, and depression. Through a blend of daily classes, vocational training and shared worship, the ministry walks side by side with each student on the path to recovery. Their mission is not only to help individuals find freedom through Jesus Christ, but also to guide them toward lasting transformation as true disciples.
Strong Tower Ministries is a 501c3 non-profit exempt from state licensure under the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Why? Because its treatment and recovery services are purely religious. The ministry offers nonmedical recovery methods like prayer, spiritual counseling, moral guidance, and scriptural study rather than clinical interventions. It’s a faith-driven approach designed to lift those struggling with addiction, reminding them that with Christ, a brighter tomorrow is always within reach. Strong Tower is for many “Where Strength Begins.”
Strong Tower Ministries stands as a true beacon of hope, guiding both men and women who have faced the trials of drug addiction, alcohol abuse, homelessness, and the depths of depression. More than a shelter, it offers a transformative oneyear residential program designed to address the practical and spiritual needs of each individual. Through structured classes, vocational training, and a Christcentered community, their residents are equipped to rebuild their lives from the inside out. At the heart of Strong Tower
is an unshakable belief in the healing power of Jesus Christ—His love, His grace, and His ability to restore what was once broken. With faith as the foundation, every day becomes a step toward freedom, renewal and a brighter tomorrow.
At the heart of Strong Tower Ministries are its founders, Pastor Michael and Kendra, who launched the ministry in 2008 by opening their own home to a handful of people struggling with addiction. Now 16 years
later, their vision has grown into a thriving ministry that today helps and houses more than 150 individuals. Driven by a passion to see the lost be found, Michael and Kendra have dedicated their lives to serving those in need—whether battling homelessness, addiction, anxiety, or depression. The couple’s unwavering commitment to God’s call has touched thousands of lives. Together they share not only a thriving ministry, but also a close-knit family: two daughters, a son-in-law, and a beloved granddaughter. Today, their children all also serve in the
full-time ministry—walking faithfully in their parents’ footsteps.
The ministry is about nurturing faith and actively caring for the community that surrounds it. Two of Strong Tower’s standout initiatives exemplify this commitment:
• PARTY IN THE FIELD:
Every first Tuesday, Strong Tower hosts a family-friendly event featuring free food, games, prizes, and fellowship. It’s an open invitation to neighbors to gather, laugh, and find joy together.
• FOOD BANK SERVICE:
On the first and third Friday of each month, the ministry distributes around 150–200 food boxes to local families in need, offering sustenance and support.
Their community-building efforts demonstrate that their mission isn’t just about preaching—it’s about living out compassion and building community through service.
Strong Tower is designed to disciple and equip men of God to serve faithfully in the Lord’s Kingdom. Each day, the men participate in prayer and worship, Biblical classes, and vocational work that instill both spiritual discipline and practical skills. They are encouraged to develop a strong work ethic that will carry into their future. Much of their time is spent in the wood shop, where they design and create the beautiful wooden
crosses that are carried from community to community to help raise support for the ministry. In addition, the men have opportunities to put their God-given talents to work in other areas such as landscaping, carpentry, and mechanics. At the heart of it all, Strong Tower emphasizes true healing and restoration are found only through the power of God’s Word and His Spirit.
The goal of Strong Tower’s women’s program is to restore what the enemy has taken from the lives of those who enter. Through worship, prayer and counseling, participants are reminded that they are precious in the sight of God and deeply useful in His Kingdom. The ministry seeks restoration not only spiritually, but also relationally and mentally. Each morning begins with chores, devotionals, prayer, worship, and Biblical teaching, while afternoons are spent working in various areas of the campus to keep facilities clean and thriving. At the heart of this program is a desire for every woman to know she is loved, valued and cherished.
Here’s an example of what a day might look like: At sunrise, the women at Strong Tower begin their day not with the noise of chaos that once defined their lives, but with the quiet rhythm of restoration. Each morning starts with simple chores that give structure and purpose, followed by prayer, worship and devotionals. These moments remind them that they are not forgotten, but are
precious daughters of God with a place in His Kingdom. After a time of Biblical teaching, afternoons are dedicated to hands-on work around campus—gardening, cleaning, or assisting in projects that keep all of the facilities welcoming for those who come seeking refuge. Every task becomes a lesson in stewardship and service, reinforcing their value and capacity to contribute. But the heart of the program goes far deeper than schedules or assignments. Through counseling, prayer and community, these women are learning to reclaim what their addiction, depression and brokenness once stole. Here, restoration is holistic—spiritual, relational and mental. By the end of each day, they are not just building clean spaces, but rebuilding lives. And most importantly, they are reminded again and again of one truth—they are loved, cherished and useful in God’s Kingdom.
Above all, Strong Tower communicates a powerful message: “This is home.” Whether attending worship, entering recovery or joining community events, everyone is welcomed with openness, acceptance and warmth. The ministry offers a year-long residential journey of healing for those facing addiction, homelessness or despair, providing a safe place to recover and to rebuild. Strong Tower stands as a place of hope, healing, and restoration for all who come. Here, true strength begins.

I couldn’t be more in love with this Pumpkin Cake topped with dreamy cream cheese frosting. It’s so moist and packed with pumpkin flavor. This cake uses cinnamon and a bit of freshly grated nutmeg, not pumpkin spice. If you’re a pumpkin spice girlie, feel free to add 1 teaspoon here but I made this for all of the true pumpkin lovers like myself who don’t want cloves and allspice covering up the flavor of true pumpkin. Tip: use pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling. This cake is elegant enough for company, but easy enough to make all season. It’s also perfect for any Halloween party or Thanksgiving gathering — or just because it’s Fall Y’all!
INGREDIENTS
15 oz can pumpkin puree
4 large eggs
1.5 cups packed dark brown sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
2 Tbsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
Freshly grated nutmeg
Cream cheese frosting (below)
....................................................................
(1) Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease and flour two 9″ cake pans.
....................................................................
(2) Mix together pumpkin, eggs, brown sugar, vegetable oil, maple syrup, and vanilla extract in a stand mixer until uniform in color, scraping down the sides of the bowl a few times as you go. Measure dry ingredients right on top, mixing just until combined.
....................................................................
(3) Divide into prepared pans and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 23-28 minutes. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove and cool completely. Frost with cream cheese frosting and dust with a bit of cinnamon.

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
INGREDIENTS
12 oz cream cheese (full fat), at room temperature
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
....................................................................
(1) Beat frosting ingredients until smooth.

CraftWay Kitchen in Southlake has quickly become a local favorite for those locals seeking a perfect balance between elevated dining and approachable comfort. With its laid back atmosphere and a menu that delivers creativity alongside comfort food classics, the restaurant manages to feel both upscale and wonderfully unpretentious. Think white glove service, five star food, but in your favorite cozy leggings.
The cozy, casual vibe of CraftWay Kitchen is truly one of its greatest
strengths. From the moment you walk through the door, you are welcomed with an ambiance that feels like home, yet with enough polish to make a night out feel special. Dimmed lighting plus some comfortable seating and a friendly staff set the stage for an evening where the food truly shines.
The menu is packed with memorable dishes and the appetizers here are no exception. Their Reuben Eggrolls are a standout, and a perfect representation of CraftWay Kitchen’s style—familiar flavors reimagined with flair. Each bite offers the smoky richness of pastrami wrapped in a crispy wonton shell, paired with a slightly spicy Russian dressing dipping sauce to tie it all together. It’s a playful appetizer that quickly becomes a crowd favorite.
Another not-to-be missed starter here is the Crab Stuffed Mushrooms. Perfectly portioned and loaded with delicate crabmeat, these bite-sized starters deliver big on flavor. The mushrooms themselves are roasted to perfection, offering a savory earthiness that balances the sweetness of the crab. Finished with a touch of crispy broiled cheese, they’re the kind of appetizer that pairs effortlessly
with a craft cocktail while you settle in for the main course.
When it comes to entrées, CraftWay’s Beef Wellington is a showstopper. This old school dish is notoriously difficult to execute well, but the chefs here rise to the challenge. The beef is so tender and perfectly cooked, wrapped in a golden puff pastry that adds just the right amount of buttery crunch. A savory dark demi-glace cuts the richness, while the accompanying mashed potatoes round out the hearty dish. It’s indulgent, satisfying and a true testament to CraftWay’s culinary skill.
Of course, no evening at CraftWay Kitchen would be complete without exploring their cocktail menu. Their drinks are as inventive as their food, offering unique takes on classics alongside refreshing new creations. The Frozen Old Fashioned takes the beloved whiskey cocktail and gives it a chilled twist, making it a standout for anyone looking for something both familiar and fun. For those who prefer lighter, brighter flavors, the
Lime Ranch Water is crisp, refreshing and perfect for warm Texas evenings on CraftWay’s spacious patio. For a quick tropical geataway, a Pineapple Martini will balance sweetness and tang with a smooth finish that makes it hard to resist ordering a second round.
The food, drinks and atmosphere create a dining experience that feels both luxurious and approachable. CraftWay Kitchen has managed to carve out a unique niche—delivering gourmet dishes and cocktails in a space that feels like the perfect neighborhood spot. Whether stopping in for appetizers and drinks with friends or enjoying a full dinner with your kids, CraftWay Kitchen is where comfort always meets culinary craft.
