The lazier days of summer are behind us. All three of my kids started school yesterday—which means I now have to manage three hectic schedules on top of my own. My morning drop-offs and afternoon pick-ups are a mix of a well-rehearsed dance and a chaotic juggling act. Yet, somehow, everyone gets where they need to be. I chalk it up to preparation.
As a planner by nature, but also a single mom, I have a knack for resolving dilemmas— such as delivering three kids to three different places who all have to be there at the same time. Some might call it ‘Mom Magic’— I still chalk it up to preparation.
Really, when it comes down to it, that’s what this issue is about—preparation. It brings together two themes: expertise and back-to-school. The importance of preparation resonates in both, whether it’s for the start of a new school year or navigating the many facets of life that demand our attention. In this issue, we’re bringing together the best of both worlds with a focus on expert advice and a special section dedicated to kids going back to school.

The ‘Expert Advice’ special section (starting on page 18) features answers to some of the most common questions heard by these local business owners. Our community is home to an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience, and we’ve tapped into that resource to bring you valuable insights across various fields—from health and wellness, to legal, financial, home improvement, and more—these local experts offer practical tips and guidance to help you navigate these choices with confidence. At the same time, we know that this time of year is all about getting the kids ready for another school year. And in sticking with our theme, the start of a new academic year is a time of excitement, growth, and of course, preparation. In our quarterly section ‘Society Kids,’ you will find parenting topics, advice for getting them schoolready, funny stories, family-friendly travel and recipes for cookie cravings (starting on page 46).
The theme that ties these sections together is preparation. Whether you’re seeking expert guidance on navigating life’s challenges or getting your children ready for a successful school year, preparation is the key to feeling confident and empowered. Just as our local businesses stand ready to offer their expertise to help you succeed in various aspects of your life, we also want to support families in preparing for a successful school year. Both of these elements are rooted in community—the connections we share, the support we offer one another, and the collective wisdom that helps us all thrive. As you read through this issue, I hope you feel inspired by the sense of community that runs through our pages. Our goal is to provide you with tools and insights that not only inform, but also empower you to make the most of every season.

When we think of an expert, we think of a person who is extremely skilled and knowledgeable in their trade. A specialist, a professional... a genius. However, not everyone who claims to be an “expert” has top-notch credibility. Initials behind a name (or in front) do not ensure that person possesses sound advice.
Let’s be real! There are countless, selfproclaimed individuals with minimal to no experience that exaggerate their competence. An ordinary person might accept counsel from someone claiming to be an expert, especially if that “expert” has a handful of social media followers. But those of us who trust God know the importance of seeking His guidance in all things. As Believers, it is our responsibility to discern who is legitimately qualified to provide us with admissible wisdom. We accomplish this by looking to God for guidance. 2 Timothy 3:16 teaches us that “All scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness and thoroughly furnishes us to do good work.” And since the Bible is referred to as the Basic Instruction Book for Living on Earth, I believe it offers the best advice regarding every situation we will face in our lifetime.
In 1 Samuel 2:3, we learn that God is called the ”God of Knowledge.” He is Omniscient— all knowing. He knows when we sit down and when we rise up; He discerns our thoughts from afar. Even before a word is on our tongue, the Lord knows it altogether (Psalms 139:2, 4). He knows our secrets (Psalms 44:21). He knows the number of hairs on our head (Matthew 10:30). He knows the plans He has for each of us, for
our future (Jeremiah 29:11). And more importantly, our Father knows what we need before we ask Him (Matthew 6:8). Ladies and gentlemen, we serve a God Who is a “know-it-all.”
Because our concerns are His concerns, He will always provide the perfect answer, advice, or outcome for our situation (Psalms 138:8). However, we have a notable part to play. God is not going to distribute unsolicited advice. James 1:5 reminds us that “when we lack wisdom, we should ask God, Who gives generously to all without finding fault.” Neither will He force us down a pathway we refuse to follow. In order to lay hold of the best advice, we must be willing to allow God to direct our steps (Proverbs 16:9).
Truth be told, our ability to make decisions, though well-intended, are not always aligned with His will. Therefore, we must learn to “Trust in the LORD with all our
“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
— Proverbs 31:30
heart and lean not on our own understanding; in all our ways submit to Him and allow Him to direct our paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
To be honest, there will be times when we “miss the mark.” Times when we question if it is actually God directing us, or if we’re being led by our own desires. For this reason, we must avoid acting hastily (Proverbs 19:2). Making a decision with partial knowledge is certain to ajar the floodgates of the enemy (Isaiah 59:19), permitting him to torrent our thoughts with doubt and anxiety. Philippians 4:6 says that we are to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God.” In 1 Peter 5:7, God beckons us to “cast all our anxieties on Him, because He cares for us.” The Bible is God’s written handbook for the Believer. Those of us who are “true” Believers trust the Author and its contents. Psalms 18:30 promises that every Word of God is perfect. Assuring each of us that His advice is reliable and irrefutable.
With so much uncertainty in the world today, some of us have a lot of questions. And while there is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking professional advice, the ultimate decision should align with God’s Word. Because after all is said and done, it is His judgment that matters most. Right? — Be blessed!

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS BY SANDY LOWE
It’s a long way from stripping for a living to working in full-time church ministry. Polly Wright-Hamp shares her harrowing journey in Cherished: Shattered Innocence. Restored Hope.
One of the things that makes this book feel so authentic is Polly’s willingness to open her heart and her life story to her readers. The subject matter can be brutal and includes sexual abuse. Having lived this life, she finds herself in a mental healthcare facility as a young woman. Because she had tried to take her own life, she was not allowed to be alone, even to go to the bathroom. This “suicide watch” allowed her time to process some of her issues, but not to completely leave her difficult life behind.
As she continues to live and grow, God leads Polly on a path to peace, acceptance and finally, ministry to those whose hurts she understands so well.
While the subject matter may seem bleak, Polly never loses sight of her ultimate goal—to share the love of God with others. This emphasis makes the story very readable and helps the reader relate to Polly’s pain. Because Polly holds nothing back it helps the
reader sympathize with all of her experiences and apply these lessons to the obstacles we all face.
Because of her gift for storytelling one of the highlights of the book is the parable Polly tells about the Artist and one of his creations. While the jar he creates slips away from him and is broken, it eventually returns to him piece-by-piece to be reformed into a new, even more beautiful work of art.
At the end of each chapter Polly includes a study guide. The guide begins with Polly’s prayer for the reader and overview of the previous chapter. The questions follow a chronological arrangement covering What was (the past), What is (present) and What is to come (the future.)
For readers or group leaders who are looking for more discussion, Polly has added a section called “Cherished Conversations” at the end of the book. More material can be found on: tdacad.com/pollyhamp.com
These study aids fold in perfectly with the book’s theme of accepting our painful past experiences in order to leave them behind and become the people God intended for us to be.
It’s a story of healing, truth and discovery — a story of God’s voice and of a woman becoming all she was created to be.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Polly Wright-Hamp was born in Dallas, Texas. She spent most of her life trying to live “normally,” hiding the turmoil that raged inside her as a result of the abuse she experienced as a child. She eventually met her husband, had children and continued trying to live a ‘good’ life until God told her to share her story. Not just part of it, but all of it. Since then she founded We Are Cherished, a non-profit ministry that reaches out to women in the sex industry. Today, she speaks throughout the country teaching men and women that they have a voice, they have a purpose and they have value regardless of what they have been through. Her book is available at Amazon.com.

Guests of all ages are encouraged to attend. You may also tour the Nash Farmhouse from 9am until 5pm. Nash Farm is located at 626 Ball Street in Grapevine 76051. The admission to the car show is free! The purpose of The Italian Car Club of North Texas is to preserve and promote Italian automobiles, promote goodwill for the club and members, and to provide both social and recreational activities associated with our cars. The club was founded in 2002 as the Fiat Club of North Texas. But more meetings were held, the group grew and a wide variety of marques and their owners attended Italian CarFest. Many of these people joined the club, so it only seemed appropriate to change the club name to be less marque-specific and to reflect the broadening range of the membership base. Thus the “Italian Car Club of North Texas.” To register your car or motorcycle for the Italian Carfest, please visit their Registration form you can find online at: tinyurl.com/ItalianCarfest

The aviation industry is growing, and Galleria Dallas is partnering with Texas Woman’s University to bring attention to education and career opportunities in the aviation industry. It is estimated that over the next 20 years, the aviation industry will need to hire and train approximately three million recruits to fulfill the needs of the industry. Texas Woman’s University is breaking barriers with its new educational exhibit on Galleria Dallas’ Gallery Wall on Level 1 next to Apple from August 2nd through 31st.
The new Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences at Texas Woman’s University aims to increase the number of women in commercial piloting and aviation management, thus strengthening the talent pipeline of aviation professionals and addressing the consistent under representation of women in aviation fields. In 2023, TWU announced a $15 million grant from the Doswell Foundation to support the new aeronautical sciences program. The gift, the university’s largest from a foundation, will support faculty, equipment and scholarships.
Flight training is costly. However, TWU is consistently one of the most affordable fouryear universities in Texas, and the Doswell school intends to offer one of the most affordable flight programs in the region. Students in the Bachelor of Sciences in Aviation Science program are eligible for all traditional forms of financial aid and scholarships as in any other collegiate program. “Every day, TWU students and graduates break barriers around the globe, harnessing their potential, purpose and perseverance to realize their dreams and contribute to their communities,” said J. Clinton Grant, TWU director of Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences. “We believe the Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences will offer TWU students the opportunity to do the same in the world of aviation.”
Texas Woman’s University (TWU) is the nation’s largest university system focused on women. Texas Woman’s offers degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences, nursing, health sciences, business and education. Campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston are joined by an e-learning campus offering innovative online degree programs.
On Saturday, Aug. 24, Galleria Dallas will celebrate TWU Day from 1-3 pm. Grant will join students and faculty at the exhibit. They’ll not only share information about the program, but they’ll also have fun aviation swag and hands-on kids’ activities. TWU’s student athletes will also be on hand to greet guests and read to children on Level 3. “Galleria Dallas has long been a passionate supporter for educational causes in North Texas,” said Galleria Dallas Director of Marketing Megan Townsend. “It is an exciting time to celebrate the Doswell School of Aviation and the career possibilities this exceptional STEM program will provide to our community.” The Galleria Dallas is located at 13350 Dallas Parkway in Dallas, Texas 75240.

COVER STORY EXPERT ADVICE
Everyone deserves a roofing contractor they can trust, but unfortunately, that's often the exception rather than the rule. Enter Jennifer and David Martin, the powerhouse duo behind David Martin & Son Roofing. Since 1996, they’ve been committed to providing quality roofing services grounded in integrity — believing that you should be able to rely on a roofing company who delivers excellence without compromise.
This commitment goes beyond just fixing roofs — they are truly dedicated to providing you with peace-of-mind, knowing that your property is safe and secure.
David Martin & Son Roofing has become a trusted name in the community, known for top quality work with a personal touch. Their hands-on approach, combined with deep expertise, means each and every project is treated with the utmost care and attention. They take pride in their work, strive to always exceed expectations and leave a lasting impact. For Jennifer and David, it’s not just about roofing — it’s about being there for their community, protecting homes, and making sure every family feels safe under their roof.
With every job, they’re proving real heroes don’t wear capes — they carry tool belts and work to keep their communities strong.
Q: How can I tell if I need a new roof? You can tell you need a new roof when yours is leaking, housing animals, has a hole, or is missing a few shingles. That said, you also might need a roof replacement when you notice that your roof sounds rickety or needs a lot of repairs. In our experience, it might also be time for a new roof if the current one is over 12 years old. Most roofs don’t normally last much longer without developing significant problems. If yours has flashing missing, curling shingles, broken ice dams, or discoloration on the walls and ceilings, it might be time to get a new roof. We always recommend having your roof checked by an expert roofer for damage after a hail or wind storm.
Q: What’s the difference between licensed roofing contractors and those without a license? Surprisingly, roofers don’t have to be licensed in Texas. Anyone can claim to be a roofing contractor in Texas and operate as a legitimate business without insurance. As a result, scams and disappointed consumers are prevalent. According to information by the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, only about 10% of roofing contractors in Texas obtain a roofing license. This can make it difficult for homeowners to determine whether the roofer they've chosen will do what they say they're going to do, or that the roofing work meets code requirements.
Q: How long does a composition roof last in Texas? The longevity of your composition roof depends on the materials used. Climate also has an impact on how long your roof will last. A roof will need replacement sooner when exposed to harsh weather such as severe humidity, snow and hail. In our expert experience, general lifespan of composition roofs is around 12-20 years. You might need to replace your roof faster if it develops any problems like water damage, sagging, and loose or cracked shingles. You can also call your roofer after an especially harsh winter to determine if everything is still in good shape.
THE DRIVING FORCE | Jennifer Huynh Martin brings over two decades of diverse professional experience to the table. As co-owner of David Martin & Son Roofing, she’s been instrumental in the company’s growth, specializing in everything from ventilation improvements and roof replacements to gutter systems, commercial roofing and emergency repairs. Jennifer's role involves managing daily operations, overseeing material shipments and job sites, contracting new clients, and handling the financial aspects of the business. Impressively, 95% of their customers are either referrals or repeat clients—a testament to the strong relationships Jennifer has built over the years.
A WOMAN OF
| Jennifer’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. She’s been recognized as one of the Top Women in Business by Marquis Who’s Who Publications and Society Life Magazine, as well as other notable publications. Under her leadership, David Martin & Son Roofing has been named the Best Roofing Company in Tarrant County for two consecutive years. The company has also earned the title of Best Roofer in Colleyville for seven years running, and in Fort Worth for four years. Additionally, Society Life readers have honored them as the top roofing company in Tarrant County for four years straight, with the "Tops in Tarrant" award from 2021 to 2024.
Admittedly, one of Jennifer’s most remarkable skills is her ability to diagnose complex roofing issues simply by speaking with clients over the phone, even if she’s never met them in person. This talent, combined with her love for customer interaction, has allowed her to build a thriving business with her husband David that caters to clients of all ages and backgrounds. Jennifer honed her work ethic early on by managing her parents' gas station, convenience store, and commercial property business, while also working as a dental assistant and office manager. She credits much of her success to the values instilled by her parents, particularly her father’s advice. Jennifer hopes to inspire other aspiring entrepreneurs, especially Asian women like herself. As a first-
generation immigrant from Vietnam, she has navigated and succeeded in male-dominated industries and believes there are many paths to a fulfilling career and life. David Martin, on the other hand, attributes his successes to the strong moral values and work ethic imparted to him by his grandmother and grandfather, who raised him from the age of 12. The core values of trust, quality, and integrity that form the foundation of David Martin & Son Roofing are deeply ingrained in both of them.
KEEPING HOMES
| David Martin & Son Roofing is dedicated to safeguarding homeowners from the challenges posed by roofing problems, including damage from wind, hail and lightning. With a deep commitment to quality and customer care, they offer comprehensive roofing solutions that ensure homes remain secure and well-maintained. By focusing on durability and long-term value, the Martins personally help homeowners protect their properties from elements, giving them peace-of-mind knowing that their homes are in capable hands. Whether you are dealing with the aftermath of a storm or planning a major renovation, local homeowners trust David Martin & Son Roofing to deliver topnotch results and exceptional service.
HOMETOWN HEROES | With over 27 years of experience, their experts deliver quality work done right the first time. You can trust them to repair your roof swiftly and restore your home’s protection. Their commitment to community service is equally strong, contributing to many local nonprofits, city, chamber, sports and schools organizations. Most recently, a local high school needed to rebuild their baseball field, so David Martin & Son Roofing stepped in with a $20k donation to help them reach their goal. They’ve also been sponsors of the school’s basketball summer camp for the last 12 years. As long-time Colleyville residents, they’re deeply rooted in the community and will always be here when you need them. Unlike those fly-by-night roofing companies that chase storms and leave homeowners high-and-dry, they’re a trusted local presence you can count on.
with DIANA & STEWART SCOTHORN
Founder, Diana Scothorn and her husband/CEO Stewart Scothorn, ultimately decided on the name “The Benefit Link” because they desired to be the link between seniors and their insurance. They want clients to know they have a constant support system. They are always here to make sure they’re taken care of and to be their Medicare advocates.
The Benefit Link provides the objective guidance that you need to make an educated decision about Medicare Supplement. There’s never any charge to their clients for their services and they’re available on a direct basis every day for people in all 50 states.
Q: What does The Benefit Link offer? The Benefit Link specializes in helping our clients obtain the best coverage possible regarding Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), and Life Insurance, as well as cancer, dental and vision plans. We are licensed insurance agents with more than 30 years experience. We advocate on behalf of our clients to help find the best suited plan for their specific circumstances. Get your no cost consultation and learn how to avoid high Medicare medical bills.
Q: Is Medicare just for seniors? No. Most people think of Medicare as just a health insurance program for senior citizens. While it’s true that most Medicare participants are over the age of 65, there are multiple ways to qualify for Medicare. At The Benefit Link, working with mature adults is our specialty, but we’re able to guide anyone through the Medicare process and what their options are—at any age. If you are interested in learning more about what makes someone eligible for Medicare, reach out to us today. Our experts will make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and enroll on time.
Q: How much does your service cost? There is absolutely no charge to clients for our services and we are available on a direct basis every day. Medicare supplement plans are standardized by federal government, so there will be no difference in coverage from one carrier to another. The difference is cost, stability, and service.
Q: Are you connected to any one specific insurance agency? Because we are now, and always have been, totally independent representatives and not captive employees of any particular carrier, we can analyze and
compare plans along with providing you access to many different carriers. We have access to virtually every major insurance company and their plans. We’re dedicated to knowing everything we can by tracking premiums, rate increase history, and trends across all companies so you are able to make an educated decision about your healthcare. We take pride in the hundreds of testimonies on the service we provide throughout the United States—and our services are always totally free of charge.
Q: Why should we choose The Benefit Link over another benefits coordinator?
We provide guidance and support that’s 100% objective and in the best interest of our clients. The heart of what we do at The Benefit Link, is to serve with a level of excellence that has been lost in recent generations. We develop personal, oneon-one relationships, as well as provide our clients trusted guidance for all of their Medicare needs.
Q: How have you taken standardized Medicare and made it personal? This is a very personal experience, but it doesn’t feel like insurance companies understand that. Although Medicare is standardized, there are different plans, supplements and options you might not know about or are overwhelmed by. We understand your needs and provide information required to make the best choice for yourself.
Q: Why Medicare advocacy? Diana’s passion has been fueled by her personal life story. At the tender age of seven, Diana’s sister was diagnosed with diabetes. Due to the severity of the disease, she had a kidney transplant by the time she was 20. By 23, she was on Medicare. Diana’s sister lost her life to the disease at 35-years-old. Diana also assisted both of her parents before they passed away as they faced COPD and cancer—both were on Medicare. Diana is not only passionate about providing clients with Medicare insurance, but she understands that providing peace-of-mind during the transition is of utmost importance. She wants to make sure everyone has the very best coverage! Her heart is to serve.
Q: Is The Benefit Link something clients only use to sign up for Medicare? No. We provide constant, lifelong support. Most clients call us initially for help guiding them through the Medicare maze and get the right plan, however we specialize in assisting people across the United States with health and life insurance needs as well.
Q: What makes you different? There’s an overwhelming need in today’s marketplace to have those who genuinely care to stand in the gap, and someone who understands a fixed budget... this is where The Benefit Link comes in. Healthcare is not one-sizefits-all. We can help you find the best plan that fits your unique medical needs.
with DR. GREG GIST & DR. CARTER HAYES
For over 40 years, this superior dental practice has been a fixture in Southlake, consistently delivering unparalleled dental care. Their commitment to excellence has cultivated a loyal base of patients who demand the highest quality of care. Patients from across the United States and beyond seek out their clinical expertise and world class dentistry.
This practice does not subscribe to any managed care philosophies. They believe relationship-driven healthcare is the gold standard. They take time to understand you and your unique needs—offering a level of care rarely found.
Q: How long have you been in business? We have been privileged to treat patients from all over the country at this same location in Southlake for over 40 years. Our restorative studio was constructed around the way I love to practice. It was built with large oversized operatories and panoramic ceiling-to-floor windows that bring a sense of art and extreme views of the beautiful property that our office has been on for all these years! Together with the most amazing dental team in America, we aim to be a blessing to every patient we meet.
Q: I hide my smile, but I’m afraid fixing it will hurt, what options do I have? If you have been hiding your smile, putting up with pain or putting off going to the dentist—we offer patients our safe sedation dental techniques which means you can have years of dental treatments done quickly and with little to no discomfort at all! I confidently guarantee you the finest, safest and most comfortable care in dentistry. All of our cases can be accomplished with oral sedation, so that we can be efficient with our patient’s busy schedules, as well as to be able to put our most anxious patients at ease. Sedation is your answer.
Q: Is it really important to get my teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months? Preventive dental care is very important throughout your life, no matter what your age! By practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular cleanings you can help keep your smile bright and healthy for many years to come. Our hygiene staff looks for early signs of gum disease and other issues that might plague the mouth and your overall health.
Q: Do you offer your patients financing options? Yes we do! My practice offers a 3-year 0% interest financing option for our patients who need comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry. You can now finance that beautiful smile with First Financial Bank—who is our preferred lender and my local bank for four decades. We will also accept Care Credit. Care Credit that’s accepted by over 150,000 providers and is the nation’s leading patient financing program. They can help make the dental health procedures you want possible today! We also extend a New Patient Offer to those new to our practice. You can receive a complimentary diagnostic appointment valued at $500 which includes x-rays and a comprehensive exam. It does not include your hygiene appointment and you must mention this offer when you schedule your first appointment.
Q: Is it true my failing dentistry could be making me sick? Yes, it is possible and that’s why I only uses biocompatible and time-tested materials that support your systemic, periodontal and aesthetic health. It’s important to understand that dental biofilm—the recurring bacteria that forms daily in your mouth and under failing dentistry—affects your systemic health. Bacterial growth referred to as ‘sepsis’ leaks into your blood system through periodontal ligaments and the pulp chambers of all teeth. This bacterial invasion
effects the gums, making them bleed, opening up more entry portals for further bacteria infiltration. If these bacteria infect your blood, they are instantly in every organ of your body. This is why studies emerge each year connecting dental and/or periodontal infections with a vast array of systemic disease—like cardiovascular and cerebrovascular pathology, lung infections, and new research shows a link to certain cancers. I advise that patients seek out a dental professional that has a firm handle on the concept of dental sepsis as it relates to any restorative procedures. Using infection-free materials and aggressive control of this dental sepsis is a radically different approach than many patients have been exposed to in the past and one that’s making them healthier now and into their future!
Q: Why don’t you accept insurance? We believe that a patient should have the final say as to the level of care that they want to pursue. Decisions made by insurance companies tend to best serve insurance companies. This is why my dental practice has no managed care philosophies in place. Being relationship driven, we know patients by name, not insurance coverage! We believe fee for service and relationship driven healthcare is the gold standard of quality for our patients. We want to get to know you and your specific needs. We invite you to experience The Gist Way!

with PHOTOGRAPHER, ALYCIA SAVAGE
Photographer Alycia Savage has just celebrated 23 years in business this month. She’s well known for shooting seniors, babies, families, maternity, newborns, kiddos, and even pets and boudoir-style photos. She captures memories and moments to be preserved and cherished for years to come.
In addition to creating beautiful portraits, Alycia Savage is also an international award winner, print competition judge and educational speaker—teaching thousands of photographers from across the world every year.
Q: What type of photography do you specialize in? I own a commercial, fine art photography studio in Keller Town Center. Savage Studio is a product-based boutique providing clients a luxury experience and premium art pieces including, custom heirloom albums, canvas gallery wraps, hand torn art, acrylic blocks, metal masterpieces and custom frames. We cater to families, high school seniors, corporate professionals, beauty and portrait sessions. I have always had a passion for photography and now I get to share that with my clients!
Q: I get nervous in front of the camera, how do you make clients comfortable? I have been told that I have an out-going and silly personality which helps put my subjects at ease in front of the camera and makes my sessions lots of fun! My boutique studio is a safe space where my clients feel calm and secure. I will guide you on posing so you never feel anxious about what to do.
Q: What’s the best part about your job? After becoming a mother, I realized how quickly my children changed right before my very eyes. Relentlessly, I started to document their little lives through countless photographs—knowing they would capture a glimpse of the person they were at each particular moment in their life. That’s the best part of my job. I get to capture those priceless memories and milestones that might otherwise be forgotten! And now with over 23 years as a full time professional photographer, I have been so fortunate to be able to capture these special moments officially since 2001.
Q: How do you define your success? True success comes from knowing I’m creating family heirlooms by preserving once in a lifetime memories for generations to come. The excitement, smiles, and tears of happiness on my clients’ faces is one of the most rewarding feelings I experience. When I began my career as a professional photographer, my priority was to provide relaxing and fun experiences with amazing art products. I am honored to be able to say that I still photograph almost all of my very first clients after 22 years in business. It’s an amazing feeling to get to photograph a high school senior that I have been photographing since their mother’s maternity session!
Q: How should I prepare for my session? It depends on the type of portrait, but here are suggestions that will be helpful for most sessions. Schedule appointments—haircuts, manicures, pedicures … whatever touchups you’re planning, make sure to get on your stylist’s calendar early. If you plan on a haircut or color, do so at least one week in advance. Be sure to shave the day of your appointment too (especially guys). Brows need to be waxed/plucked/shaped how you want them. No heavy tanning or spray tanning before the shoot! Tanning in excess can look unnatural and can throw your skin tone off. If you do plan spray or self tan, be sure the ankles, knees, armpits, hands and wrists are not blotchy. Don’t forget nails!
Your hands will end up in some of your favorite poses, so be sure to take time to make them presentable. Have your nails manicured and pedicured a day or two before your session. We will always suggest neutral colors to keep the overall look soft. Nude, blush, cream, ivory or french tips will finish off your look perfectly. Bright or really dark colors can distract from the overall creamy tones of the portraits. Most importantly, be as relaxed as possible. I give full direction on poses and expressions so you don’t have to worry. Arrive to your session with a great attitude and be ready to have fun creating heirlooms that you and your family will treasure for a lifetime.
Q: How much do you charge? This is an investment in preserving your memories. My fees include the photographer’s time and talent, custom editing of images and an In-Person Ordering Session at my Keller studio within two weeks after your session. Prints, files and products are purchased separately from the session fee. Portrait sessions can be either in studio or on location in the DFW metroplex. Due to high demand and to ensure I maintain a superior level of service, I have a $500 minimum investment for every session. Most clients invest between $1500-$5000 on their custom photography. I also offer clients a 0% interest financing plan. You can follow me on social media and join my email list for seasonal sales and specials.

Sexual Wellness Centers of Texas is a leading authority in sexual health, dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by sexual dysfunction. The stateof-the-art medical clinic’s mission is to rejuvenate your body, boost your confidence, amplify energy, and help you enjoy sexuality as late in life as you desire. Live fully and feel like you again!
With a strong commitment to innovation and effective treatment options, Sexual Wellness Centers is proud to offer a non-invasive and highly successful cure for ED, as well as other options to support your health and wellness like reversing hair loss and balancing hormone levels.
Q: Sexual dysfunction is a very personal matter I am hesitant to talk about. Our team is committed to total restoration and regeneration of each individual’s sexual function performed with discretion, integrity, dignity and professionalism. I personally founded Sexual Welless Centers after my own experience with ED. I woke up as a healthy 40-year-old man who could not perform. I shared the very same feelings of hopelessness, shame and worthlessness with the over 30 million men in just the U.S. who also experience erectile dysfunction. I refused to accept that this was how it was going to be for the rest of my life. So, I started a personal quest—not just for some answers, but for a cure. This journey led me to develop the REGENmax Protocol we use at the Center. I know it can be difficult, but seeking ED treatment not only addresses physical aspects, but also contributes to your overall emotional and relational wellbeing, thus promoting a more fulfilling and satisfying lifestyle. It will be life-changing.
Q: Why should I choose SWC over the other options? Over the last 15 years and a significant investment in both scientific and clinical studies, a team of SWC MDs and PhDs have diligently researched and optimized our REGENmax protocol. Having successfully treated countless patients, SWC conducted a formal clinical study of over 250 patients and employed the REGENmax protocol. Results showed that 97.2% had reversed their ED after a oneyear follow-up—an astounding success rate. Sexual Wellness Centers holds the world’s first Erectile Dysfunction global trademark patent for its REGENmax Protocol.
Q: I don’t want another medication, how is this different? It is important to understand that this is not a pill. It’s not a temporary fix. It is a painless and patent protected procedure with a 97% success rate and quick results. Specifically, it’s a treatment process called REGENmax and it completely reverse erectile dysfunction. You heard right... a revolutionary treatment that completely reverses ED. It is a cure.
Q: What can I expect? A physical exam and a blood analysis will be performed during your consultation to help our team determine what may be the underlying cause of your sexual issues. A treatment plan will be tailored to meet your unique needs. We understand that what works for one person may not work for another, which is why we offer multiple treatment options.
Q: Are your services just for men? No, we treat both men and women. Whether you are seeking to boost your libido due to childbirth, aging, or any other reason that has lowered your confidence or your performance, we offer women a variety of innovative treatment options that may be right for you. You also do not have to be experiencing uncomfortable symptoms to take back control of your sex life and enjoy your sexuality again—regardless of your age. Call our office to be connected with a team member to find out how we can help you live and love to the fullest.
Q: How do you reverse thinning hair in men and women? Unlike other programs using a single faceted approach, SWC uses a multi-dimensional approach to reverse hair loss and stimulate new growth called REGENhair. First, we determine the root cause of your hair loss. We use a special combination of Tissue Regenerative Fluid therapy and REGENlase laser treatments to synergistically create hair rejuvenation by addressing multiple aspects of hair health and growth. The result is hair you will love.
Q: What services do you offer? SWC offers a wide range of treatments, utilizing the latest technologies to improve sexual performance, combat hormone imbalance and treat hair loss with new growth.

Founded in 1986 in Colleyville, Unique Landscaping has been a local leader in designing and installing gorgeous, horticulture-based landscapes across Northeast Tarrant County. Ever since its founders graduated with horticulture degrees from Tarleton State University, they have poured their skills and expertise into beautifying our communities.
Homeowners transform their property into a private oasis with Unique Landscaping’s horticulturists and landscape design experts. For almost four decades, they’ve provided time-tested, Texas-proven garden designs and landscaping services, all backed with an exceptional guarantee.
Q: Why should we choose to work with you? For over 35 years, we have strived to approach each landscaping project from an untraditional angle that makes our services unlike any other. Every step of our design and construction process is infused with a deep knowledge of horticulture that takes your property’s unique soil, water, sun and shade into consideration. This helps to ensure your final product stays durable and healthy even in the toughest Texas weather. In addition to our profound understanding of local horticulture, your landscaping experience will be revolutionized by our strong company culture of professionalism, accountability and fairness. You’ll never have to worry about our contractors arriving late, and our line-itemized proposals will show you exactly how we’ll put your hard-earned money to good use. Even after we wrap up construction, our 1-year warranty including periodic check-ups will ensure that our quality continues to exceed all of your expectations. Our customers are always impressed with the level of customer service and attention-to-detail we provide. When you hire Unique Landscaping, we are focused on getting your work completed and done right.
Q: Do you use sustainable practices and materials? Yes, and in many ways we are working with our environment and leaving it better than when we arrived. We are unique in that we prefer to use native and adaptive plant materials. Using natives helps with water conservation and longevity in the landscape. Water conservation is so important. We also have our own tree lot, many of the Oaks are grown from acorns and sold throughout the area. We try to preserve what we can and only remove something if it really will better the environment around it.
Q: What can I expect? We have a 5-step process starting with a free consultation. At your on-site visit, the designer will listen to your concerns and requests, then answer questions. All installations always start with a detailed design proposal. The designer and drafter revisit the site to do a property analysis that accounts for your yard’s unique features. Then, you will get to meet with your designer to review your design that will bring your dreams to fruition. This is when you can finalize the design and make any revisions. Finally construction begins and you watch the magical transformation!
Q: Are there any guarantees? We do offer a 1-year warranty on plant material. We want you to have the best experience with the plants and learn to care for them. That is why we have a horticulturist check the landscape at 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year. We provide a report of what we saw, offer any advice or let you know about any replacements we will be doing on material that is not making it. Things can happen, but we want you to feel confident in your landscape as it continues to establish itself.
Q: Do you offer maintenance? We have a limited number of maintenances that we handle each year. We send out maintenance proposals with the yearly amount and scope explained, and the client has the choice to sign up. First come, first served—once we max out our number of maintenance hours
for the year, you can get on our waiting list to be notified when we have availability.
Q: What services do you offer? Our team blends together diverse skills—from horticulture to hardscaping—to create the optimal landscape for your home. The garden, outdoor living space, or patio of your dreams requires intricate knowledge of the local climate and what it takes to design a landscape that will thrive for years to come. When you partner with our local landscape company, you’ll enjoy a process based around honesty, fairness and integrity—with an experienced team with deep knowledge about Texas-tested plants. We offer these services to clients. –

NOW THRU SEPT 16 • Art and War in the Renaissance • Kimbell Art Museum hosts the exhibit: Art and War in the Renaissance: The Battle of Pavia Tapestrie. It marks the first time that this entire cycle of seven large-scale tapestries—some of the most awe-inspiring examples of often-overlooked art form—has been on view in the United States. The tremendous images, each about 27 feet wide by 14 feet high, commemorate Emperor Charles V’s decisive victory over French King Francis I that ended the 16th century Italian Wars. Designed by court artist Bernard van Orley, the tapestries were woven in Brussels by Willem and Jan Dermoyen in deeply saturated hues and exquisite detail, luxuriously highlighted with gold. Each composition is packed with figures including richly adorned military leaders, horsemen, and mercenary foot soldiers armed with swords, pikes, and firearms, all inhabiting beautifully undulating landscapes dotted with hills, towns, and forests. The immersive scale draws viewers into the world of Renaissance history, military technology, and fashion and will be complemented by impressive examples of arms and armor from the period. The Kimbell Art Museum is located at 3333 Camp Bowie Boulevard in Fort Worth 76107. For details, please visit: kimbellart.org/art-and-war-renaissance

Society Life’s Quarterly Family, Parenting and Child-focused section promises content for parents by parents, Healthy Kids and Moms, Momilies and Fatherhood You can submit the achievements of your amazing kids to our editorial team to be considered for a feature in Society Kids.
WATCH FOR EACH QUARTERLY SECTION FEBRUARY, MAY, AUGUST AND NOVEMBER
We’ve bought the desired backpack or lunch box, purchased the needed clothes and shoes, reviewed class schedules and lists with a fine-toothed comb. As parents and caregivers, so much organization goes into getting things ready for going back to school. Each of my girls has a different priority— how many classes do they have with a friend, if they made it into the class they hoped for, if they got the teacher they wanted, and do they get the activity that was their top choice. As we prepare kids for a return to school, it can be easy to get caught up in all the supplies, schedules and activities. However, prepping our kids for the character traits they need this year and throughout life is also very important.
All of our priorities collide and we forget the most important priority is who we are in the midst of all of these things. If I focus on just the year in front of me, I can get a little overwhelmed with the extras and forget that my kids’ integrity matters most. Their character, in terms of their kindness, gratitude, honesty, and making good choices, will carry them further than any other detail of the year.
Kindness Kindness is not the easiest choice all the time. It takes work and fortitude Choosing kindness is intentional and as an adult, I need reminders and help to choose kindness when others are not. Our kids need even more help with this. They need ideas and help processing exactly what kindness looks like when they really don’t feel kind toward someone. Sharing with someone who never shares, helping the person that doesn’t help you, responding softly when others use their words to hurt—all of these things and more are hard, but effective, in the long game of life. This is not something that comes naturally. It is important to remind our kids that we don’t know everyone’s story or even all of their story. We want to be people and raise people that leave a positive mark on others’ lives. So, while we aren’t wanting to kill anyone with kindness, we can be certain that kindness will overshadow meanness every time.
Gratitude I have said, “Name 10 things you are thankful for!” about a million times in my parenting journey. The minute their world is falling apart and nothing is going their way, I am giving them a speech about everything that is good. I found years ago, though, that having my kids list the things that they are grateful for made a bigger difference than my lecture. And just like kindness, gratitude is also not always easy. Some days I can barely come up with three things for my list when the reality is that I truly have a thousand things a day to be grateful for. Again, our kids need help. It has been researched and studied for decades, but what we know is true is that gratitude changes our perspective and ultimately the atmosphere around us. You put a bunch of ungrateful kids in a classroom together and you have a classroom full of complainers that cannot be happy. You add one grateful kid into the mix and they can change the group. Help your kiddos be the grateful kids. One way I often see parents help their kids practice this is through highs and lows at the end of the day or as one of my friends calls it “roses and thorns.” Have your kids name their top three good things and the top three hard things about each day. I also recommend having your kids say three things (or 10) they are grateful for on the way to school before the day starts. This helps set the tone for the day.
Child Life Specialist Shares Back-to-School Reminder: Pack the Kindness, Gratitude and Honesty
Honesty Honesty can come with some weight. If you don’t choose the honest way, then your words become meaningless to those around you. To be a person of your word comes with consequences, but it also builds you into a trustworthy person. I find that honesty can be difficult for a lot of kids because they are more fearful of the consequences of their honesty than they are about lying. This is often because they can’t see how lies pile up and that they will have to lie to keep their first lie intact. It’s our job as parents to help them make the hard choice to tell the truth—even if there is going to be shortterm consequences. Years ago, one of my precious daughters drew on her teacher’s couch and then lied about it saying she didn’t do it. While she wasn’t the only one, she was one of the artists. She had to write a note apologizing for not telling the truth, look her teacher in the eyes, and tell her she lied—and then I joined her for a lunch hour to try all the options for cleaning ballpoint pen off of a faux leather white couch. She still remembers this! –
Good Choices As my kids head out of the car every day, I say, “Be kind. Make good choices.” I was reading another mom’s encouragement the other day: “You (and everyone you know) are just one decision from falling off a cliff.” It is the truth. One bad choice can change the course of a whole day, week, month, year or even someone’s life. My husband always says that he wants our kids to know how to think. Being able to stop and think through your next move and decision is incredibly important. This is also something all of our kids need help with. As parents and caregivers, we want to provide a safe space to think through decisions. We want our kids to learn how to stop and think before impulsively moving into a choice. If we can remind them and help them to be mindful, we can help them establish their moral compass that will last them a lifetime. Good choices account for yourself, for others, and for the future. As you blaze into this next school year, try to remember that your kids character matters the most in the long game. It doesn’t mean that we don’t focus on the schedules, activities and supplies, but we prioritize their character and the attention it needs and deserves. Also, don’t forget, we are all in this together!

There’s a seven-letter word weighing heavy on most families right now—savings. And with good reason. According to a Bankrate study, 56% of Americans wouldn’t be able to pay for an emergency expense of $1,000 or more from their savings account. People tend to think of saving as a daunting and headache-inducing process, but it can be fun and rewarding with the right system in place that works for your family.
Today’s modern families are learning to save the lazy way with money saving tips from Chartered Accountant (CA) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Maya Corbic CPA. She is the author of From Piggy Banks to Stocks: The Ultimate Guide for Young Investors. Here you will find some feasible and interactive ways to save and grow your family’s wealth together—while also learning valuable financial skills.
Save the Extras: It’s all about the little things when it comes to saving. For instance, put the money you save when you get a discount at the store directly into your savings account or save the money you would have otherwise spent (for example on things like borrowed sports gear for youth sports vs. buying new). And if you are lucky to land a raise at work, move your pay raise into savings as you are already used to living on your old income.
The 365-Day Nickle Challenge: This challenge can result in saving $3,339.75 in one year and it only involves nickels! The challenge goes as so, on Day 1, you transfer 5 cents into your savings account. Day 2, transfer 5 cents plus another 5 cents or nickel to your savings account. Day 3, transfer 10 cents plus another 5 cents or nickel to your savings account. Repeat the process until the last day of the year and you’ll be looking at a nice extra chunk of change.
This challenge is similar to the nickel challenge, but with dollars. Starting on Monday, save $1. Then on Tuesday, save $2. This process continues until you get to Sunday and save $7. You will save $1,456 in one year with this easy method.
Start by grabbing 100 envelopes, which you can find at most dollar stores, and write a number from 1-100 on each one. Then, shuffle the envelopes and put them into a bag/container. For the next 100 days, daily draw an envelope from the bag. The number written on the selected envelope will instruct you how much money to put into that envelope. For example, if you draw the number 20, you place $20 into that envelope. By the end of the 100 days, you will save $5,050.
This challenge will have you counting backwards! On Day 1, transfer $45 into your savings account. Day 2, transfer $44 and then day 3 transfer $43, repeat the process until you hit 45 days. By the end of this challenge, you can save $1,035 in just one year.
Begin the challenge by saving $1 in week 1. Week 2, save $2 and so on. In week 52, the last week of the year, save $52. This will result in saving $1,378 by the end of the year!

Our neighborhood recently participated in a garbage disposal trial. We weren’t offered the opportunity to opt-out, so we optedin. Our city, in partnership with a local waste removal company, provided us with a free-of-charge, bright-blue, 96-gallon garbage can. As with most free things, the big blue monster excited me. It was a monster truck of waste receptacles. It was rated to half-a-ton, molded from the finest plastic, and was equipped with a pair of all-terrain wheels. It was designed to meet all our household waste disposal needs. It came with an owner’s manual which, rather than reading, I fed into the can’s cavernous bowel. I didn’t need the owner’s manual. My 13-yearold daughter, owns garbage day. So, when I introduced Revi to her new can she reminded me, in mobster-like fashion, that I pay her an allowance for the privilege of taking out the garbage on her behalf.
I couldn’t wait to take our new can on a testdrive. When garbage day arrived, I fed trash bag after trash bag into the behemoth. As I dragged the can to the curb, I learned that the handling left a lot to be desired. It drove like a 1984 Cadillac Brougham without power steering. Halfway to the curb, to improve performance, I removed half of its contents and continued my journey. At the curb, I put the can in “park” and placed the garbage bags I removed next to the can, rather than putting them back into the can. Later in the day when I went to the curb to collect the can, the can was empty, but the garbage next to the can remained. A sticky note was placed on the can. The note directed me to put “ALL” garbage into the can. The note was signed with a smiley face.
Next garbage day, under Revi’s watchful eyes, my wife and I loaded the garbage can to the brim. Given its absurd weight and smell, we drove it quickly and as closely to the curb as possible. It wasn’t close enough. That evening when I yanked on what I thought was an empty garbage can to retrieve it from the
curb, I dislocated my shoulder. The can had not been emptied. Another sticky note was placed on the can. It directed me to put the can within one inch from the curb. It was signed with a befuddled face.
The following week, with the help of a neighbor, my wife, and daughter’s watchful eyes, we dragged the fly-swarmed, larvae-embalmed, garbage can that was full of two-week’s worth of household decay to the curb. The excess garbage that didn’t fit into the can was placed on top of the can. A few hours later, I heard the hydraulic hum of the garbage truck’s mechanical arms grasp our can. I looked out the window just in time to watch the truck’s arms, in a tantrum rage, repeatedly slam the can onto the street until the bags that were placed on top of the can fell onto the street. Afraid, I hid until I could no longer hear the hum. Then I walked to the curb. The can was empty, but the contents of the bags that were placed upon the can were strewn all over the street and covered with tread marks. On the can was a sticky note reminding me “ALL” contents must be loaded into the can. It was signed by a sad face. Taped under the sticky note was a copy of the owner’s manual and a customer satisfaction survey. I completed the survey to express my dissatisfaction.
The next garbage day, we checked and crosschecked every detail of garbage-day protocol as described within the owner’s manual. The weeks’ worth of garbage that didn’t fit within the can was disposed of in other creative ways throughout our neighborhood. To our dismay, the garbage again was not picked up. Another customer satisfaction survey was taped to the can with a handwritten note. It was signed by a smiley face that had one grotesquely large eye. No doubt, it was a jab at survey anonymity. The note encouraged us to improve our level of satisfaction to improve the quality of service. Begrudgingly, I reconsidered our level of satisfaction. I gave our waste disposal concierge a rave review. It seemed to do the trick. Our garbage is now picked up most weeks while my daughter continues to get her allowance every week.

In this issue of Society Life’s Mom’s column, we asked local Nurse
Anesthetist (CRNA) Megan Carter to answer 20 questions about her experiences both in becoming and being a mom. Megan has two children: Jeffry is 8 and Nash is 5. Megan lives with her husband, Will and their dog, Rocka, in Colleyville. Here’s what she had to say…
SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? MEGAN CARTER: In Germany when I was about five years old, I remember her working at her desk. She put a small desk next to hers and I always loved when we would “work” together. She also had a long commute to work, and we listened to my music on the way there and her music on the way back. I love that my earliest memories with her are of just the two of us.
SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? MC: That it’s black and white. We say things before having kids, like, “I would never... give them that, say that, let them do this.” Motherhood/parenting is so gray! I feel like nobody talks about having to parent your kids differently. Nobody talks about having that second kid and how different they are. You just think, wash, rinse, repeat. But nope, each sibling has a different upbringing and their own little personalities. You really have to learn to adapt every step of the way.
SL: What’s something you always wanted to do but didn’t... and why didn’t you? MC: I always wanted to live in Europe, especially London. I traveled a lot as a young child with my parents, but then stayed in the local/regional area, attending Grapevine High School and Texas A&M University. Once I started a career, had a family and made community ties that dream dissipated.
SL: Was there something your Mom did when you were a kid you swore you’d never do as a parent? MC: Honestly, no. My mom was always supportive, loving and nurturing. As a working mom, I looked up to her and was amazed she was able to “do it all!” I know now that she was able to do it all because real mom life does take a village. Circling back many times on this question, I finally thought of something I swore I’d never do. I always thought I would not be as “attached” to my kids. I felt like she loved me so much and was attached to me. I thought it because I was her only child. Now as a mom, I understand the “attachment” mentality.
SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? MC: A veterinarian. We had all kinds of pets—dogs, hamsters, rats, rabbits, etc. We would “play vet” and take care of our stuffed animals. That was my dream until I had to help say goodbye to many pets. That dream quickly faded away.
SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? MC: Many of them have, ha most of them! It’s funny trying to think back on what I thought it would be like to be a mom. My mom was always upfront with me about having kids. Sometimes I questioned if I wanted any and she would tell me, “Just remember you can never take it back, once you’re a mom you are always a mom.” I think that’s the biggest thing I’m realizing now. Even when I have adult kids, I’m still their mom. Even when they have their own kids, I’m still their mom. The impact of becoming a mom and being one forever is something that holds so much gravity.
SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? MC: I’m shocked to say Disney World. Will and I had never really done Disney and didn’t know what to expect. We went just the four of us and had the absolute best week. The boys still say it was the Best. Day. Ever! I think because it was just our family and in a place that was magical and different, it really impacted us. We have the most wonderful memories from that trip.
SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood MC: If you asked me a year ago, I’d have said my youngest being in the NICU. I had a high-risk pregnancy with Nash. He was 32 weeks and spent a month in the Parkland NICU. He had four blood transfusions within 24 hours of birth. Even being a nurse it was such a difficult experience. However, now I would say it was an event that happened somewhat recently with losing our house in a fire. It radically changed our lives. I realized just how strong I’d have to be for my young kids. Of course, this is something that has greatly affected all of us, but it has made me realize that I really do have to put myself last. I must show my kids how to persevere and that positive things can come from something so terrible. I want to see them living normal lives—going to school, seeing their friends, playing sports, swimming, traveling and being able to just be kids. I’m still learning through this process and trying to focus a lot of my energy on them and their happiness.
SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? MC: After I felt settled in my career and my husband’s business was stable. My husband and I met when I was 18 years old. We have been together through all my schooling and a total of five universities. He
knew how important my career would be and during this time he decided to start his own home theater/electrical business. We both had career goals, so of course we wanted to be financially ready. We also wanted to travel and enjoy married life before kids. I wouldn’t say I was ever “ready” to have kids. We just figured it was officially time. I got pregnant easily and suffered a miscarriage. After going through that I knew I really wanted a baby and that’s when I knew I was really ready.
SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? MC: During Christmas season, there’s a mistletoe booth in downtown Grapevine. I first took the picture with Jeffry when he was seven months old. We recreate that picture every year. Then I started with Nash when he was only two months old. It’s so special for me to do with them every year and I love getting to compare these pictures and how fast they have grown.
SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? MC: New, rocky, fun, exhausting and just the best. I mean if you ask any first-time mom during their first year how it’s going.—I feel like most would say they are confused and tired. I look back on it now and it already seems foggy. I remember loving all the little things Jeffry did and I documented so much of it. I was still in a newer position at work and did a lot more call shifts than I would like. But it made me be truly present when I was with him. I will always cherish those baby snuggles on my post-call days.
SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? MC: Happiness and lives filled with lots of laughter. I’d love for them to be in a career or field that they love and enjoy. Obviously, I want them to be comfortable in their lives, but ultimately happy.
SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? MC: Reminding myself to be present! I’m such a perfectionist with OCD, and a planner. I really struggle with living in the moment. I’m present for my boys, but I’m always thinking about what’s next. This year I have really tried to enjoy every single day to the fullest.
SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it MC: That’s a loaded question to me. Perfect day as a mom? With friends? By myself? As a family? I could give so many answers. It also depends on my mood and what’s going on in my life. I love getting to relax with the boys, like really relax. Maybe hang in the pool or go see a newly released cute movie. I feel like I hardly ever just relax so that would be generally a perfect day.
SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? MC: Goodnight Irene. My mom used to sing this to me and honestly forgot about it until I heard one of our favorite bands warming up and playing it. Jeffry was nine months old, and I remember coming home the very next night and singing it to him. I basically sing it every night to both my boys and they call it the “mama song.”
SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? MC: Be present! It’s hard when people say, “enjoy every moment, it goes so fast.” We know it does. But also, we must live our own lives and you’re dealing with all the juggling. I think just being more prepared in knowing that would help. Know that you’re going to have a hard time trying to do it all, but when you’re with your kids just be present. Get on the floor and play with them more instead of worrying about the mess. Tickle, laugh and hug them more. Play the games they ask you to play. Just know that you’re not going to be able to do it all.
SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? MC: “…And she loved a little boy very, very much—even more than she loves herself.” -Shel Silverstein. I wouldn’t say I live by the quote, but I think about it sometimes when I feel like my life is on the back burner. I feel like the quote and the concept of “The Giving Tree” really speaks volumes for many moms. No, I don’t want to give my everything away, but I sure find it hard to put myself first sometimes.
SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? MC: Anne Boylen or her daughter, Queen Elizabeth I. I’m half British and have been obsessed with British royal history. Even growing up, I loved all things Tudors. I’ve read a lot about both women. I couldn’t even imagine talking to these women and what they went through, but I think it would be cool to listen to their stories.
SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? MC: Kate Middleton. Again, with my British royal obsession, I’ve followed Kate since she started dating William. I’ve loved watching her become a mother. British moms can sometimes be very distant and, in their culture, you’re seen as more prestigious if you’re nanny is more the role of mom. Usually British moms are very removed, especially as a royal. I love that she has broken this mold. She used to face a lot of criticism for it, but she didn’t care. I love how involved she is with her children, she gets down on their level, she holds their hands and loves on them.
SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? MC: That’s a hard one. I feel like I want to answer it like a ‘social media my life is perfect’ post. But really, I’m trying to do something with the boys before bedtime—running around getting things ready for the next day. For me, to relax usually means stretching, watching 20 minutes of some mindless tv show and maybe a glass of wine. I strive to take a bath or focus more on reading a book, but I always fall short. I know my kids are not super little anymore, and I say I will have more time for myself as they grow up. It will be interesting to see if that’s true!

Joanne Cacciatore, PhD, Founder visit: missfoundation.org
MISS Foundation, established in 1996 by Dr. Joanne Cacciatore, is an international nonprofit, volunteer-based organization providing C.A.R.E. [Counseling, Advocacy, Research, and Education] services to any families experiencing the death of a child.
The MISS Foundation’s vision is that no one has to walk alone in traumatic grief. This necessitates a compassionate community where grief and love, pain and beauty intersect.
Individuals experiencing unparalleled trauma and grief, such as the loss of a child, need the most compassionate support available. MISS Foundation provides this through local support groups, skilled counseling, advocacy, education, peersupport mentoring, a therapeutic carefarm program, among other things. The values and philosophy play a vital role in every-
thing they do. Organizational values include:
...........................................................................
• To recognize that the death of a child at any age is one of life’s most tragic experiences
...........................................................................
• To honor the sacredness of every member of the family
...........................................................................
• To value integrity, kindness and respect in all they do
...........................................................................
• To provide mindful, compassionate and respectful care of others and themselves
...........................................................................
• To embrace the commitment of lifelong care in the aftermath of a child’s death
...........................................................................
• To foster a healing environment in which individuals, families and communities may, when ready, experience a sense of hope for the future
...........................................................................
• To recognize the potential in human beings to emerge from their suffering, transformed, ready to help another
...........................................................................
• To promote a non-medicalized, community-based approach to grief including equine therapy with rescue horses, eco therapies through retreats and activities in nature, and mindfulness practices such as meditation and yoga.
More specialized care is sometimes necessary to help families cope with the overwhelming experience of loss. The founder, Dr. Cacciatore, created the Selah Carefarm and guest house as a safe place for the traumatically bereaved to feel, to remember, and to connect to a community. Despite the high incidence of traumatic grief in communities around the world, there is no place like this anywhere. It provides a different approach than traditional Western treatment facilities that focus on diagnosing and medicating people who are deeply grieving. Their approach is simple, safe and focuses on three restorative areas of support—carefarming, contemplative practices and physical wellbeing. When a traumatic death occurs, such as the death of a child, not just any counselor, physician, nurse, clergy, or therapist will understand the complexities and challenges of grieving family members.
It is critical to find a provider who specializes in traumatic grief. An effective provider will walk with you, help you connect with your feelings, and help you discover ways to cope with the overwhelming sense of loss.
Formal counseling isn’t always necessary but for some it can be helpful, particularly when the provider has been well-trained in traumatic grief. This training, however, is exceedingly rare. Organizations like the MISS Foundation, Parents of Murdered Children, CASPER, and Compassionate Friends can provide a support network for you and your family. Note that support groups, however, are not therapeutic groups. Traumatic grief can be so debilitating that supportive and loving counseling by trained providers may help change lives.
Many people seek counseling and therapy to help them balance their ongoing lives in the aftermath and chaos of traumatic grief. Social support through family, friends, and support groups (online or in person), plus exercise, sunshine, in addition to contemplative practices (prayer or meditation) may be very effective in helping you and your family.
A provider Certified in Compassionate Bereavement Care®, however, may help at a much deeper level, addressing trauma specifically, interpersonal relationships, the feelings of guilt, shame, or self-blame, and can even help with past events that negatively affect daily functioning and further add to the trauma of your Beloved’s death.
Many who are traumatically bereaved, over their two decades of existence, have come to MISS Foundation, asking for help in finding a safe, well-educated, compassionate provider. Sadly, many providers were not getting sufficiently specialized training to prepare them for helping the traumatically bereaved. In an effort to correct this situation, the Center for Loss and Trauma, a partnership between the MISS and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Foundations—two leading organizations in bereavement support and education—now offer thorough training and certification to providers who work with those who are traumatically bereaved. If you or someone you know needs their support, please share this contact information to help.

1 tsp vanilla
8 oz cream cheese, at room temperature (for heaven’s sake, don’t get nonfat)
(1) Beat together sugar, whipping cream, and vanilla until soft peaks form.
...............................................................
(2) Cut cream cheese into cubes and slowly beat in. Don’t panic if it looks like cottage cheese at first—keep beating until smooth.
Sweet and chewy and oh so cinnamony, if you’re looking for perfect classic Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, you found them. You will need to chill the dough for one hour so plan accordingly ,but I promise it’s worth it. The texture of these cookies is absolutely perfect thanks to one little teaspoon of molasses. You can’t taste it, but it gives it that perfect chewiness that you want in an oatmeal raisin cookie.
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
cups
2 tsp vanilla extract
cups raisins
(1) Beat butter for one minute until smooth. Cream together butter and sugars, about 2-3 minutes.
(2) Whisk egg, molasses, and vanilla together in a small bowl, then add to butter-sugar mixture. Mix on medium speed until combined. Measure flour, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda on top and mix well.
.................................................................................................................................................
(3) Stir in oats and raisins, then cover dough and chill in the fridge for one hour.
.................................................................................................................................................
(4) Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Portion dough to about 30-36 good sized cookies and set about 2″ apart on baking sheets. Bake for 8-12 minutes or until the edges are brown but the centers are slightly wet. Remove from oven and let cool on the baking sheets for five minutes before removing to a cooling rack.
(makes 24)
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 large eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 tsp Mexican vanilla extract
1 tsp sea salt
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Sea salt for sprinkling on top Edible gold
(1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees. ...........................................................................................................................
(2) Whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and sea salt in a small bowl.
(3) Cream together butter and sugars in a stand mixer until combined.
(4) Scrape down sides of mixer. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
(5) Slowly mix in dry ingredients until combined. Stir in dark chocolate chips.
(6) Roll cookie dough into large balls — exactly 24 — and place twelve on two cookie sheets. Sprinkle each cookie with sea salt. ...........................................................................................................................
(7) Bake for about 8-10 minutes. Pull them out when they are browning on the edges but still slightly wet in the middle. Let cool completely on the cookie sheets, about 15 minutes.
(8) When cool, use chopsticks or toothpicks to carefully transfer edible gold sheets or flakes to cookies and decorate as desired.
...........................................................................................................................
These cookies never get old. If you bake them you’re in for a treat! It’s no secret that I love playing with edible gold. It just looks so fancy! It’s the perfect way to jazz up a dish for a special occasion... or in this case a special occasion cookie. Is gold really edible? Yes, but make sure it’s pure 24K gold with no filler metals. Be careful when you’re purchasing it that you are buying food grade, edible gold and not something that’s meant to be used on crafts. I love the brand Barnabas Blattgold available on Amazon. What does edible gold taste like? Edible gold is tasteless and odorless and passes through your system without being absorbed so it’s used purely for looks — but oh doesn’t it look incredible?
FOR THE COOKIES:
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
FOR THE TOPPING:
8 oz semi-sweet baking chocolate bars
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup roasted salted pistachios, chopped
(1) In a large bowl or stand mixer, cream together butter and sugar on high. Mix in egg and vanilla. Add flour, baking powder, and salt and mix just until combined.
.............................................................................................................
(2) Divide dough in half and flatten into disks. Wrap each disk with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1-2 hours.
(3) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a floured surface, roll portions of dough out to about 1/4″ thickness. Use a large round cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 8-10 minutes, let cool for one minute on the cookie sheet, then remove from sheet and cool completely.
(4) To make ganache, chop the chocolate and set in a heat-proof bowl. Heat cream in a small saucepan until it’s bubbling around the edges, then pour over chopped chocolate and let stand for 2-3 minutes before whisking until smooth. Spoon a bit of ganache in the center of each cookies, letting it ooze towards the edges.
(5) Sprinkle with chopped pistachios, then refrigerate the cookies for 10-15 minutes to set the ganache. Store at room temperature.
................................................................
Photos don’t even do these cookies justice. It’s cookie perfection: salty, sweet, chocolatey. The perfect combination! This just might be my new favorite cookie recipe. Here, buttery sugar cookies are topped with some rich dark chocolate ganache and topped with crunchy salted pistachios. Pure bliss!

REVIEW BY JENNIFER SLOAN
I very much want to “gate keep” this local spot. For now, it’s a quiet and unassumingly BBQ joint housed in a former Golden Corral along 377. You can walk in at lunch and easily find a seat in the expansive space. There’s no lining up before the doors open, hoping you’ll get in before they run out of food. The word hasn’t gotten out on this one yet and selfishly, I’m not ready for it to.
Outpost 36 is not your typical BBQ joint. And truthfully, if it was, I would not be writing about it now. Don’t boo me out of Texas, but it takes a lot for me to want to go out for barbeque. Maybe because I’ve been exposed to it so much in my Southern lifetime. I had just gotten to the point where I felt that if you have seen one brisket, you have seen them all. And same goes for brisket’s best friends potato salad or mac and cheese. However, Outpost 36 changed all that for me. They offer a truly unique experience that combines the best of classic Southern barbeque with the sophistication of a high-end dining establishment. Don’t get me wrong—it has all the necessary and nostalgic components of your classic Texas barbeque house with cozy booths, neon signs and sing-a-long country music. Yet the food itself is 10 steps ahead of its competitors—even those famous across state lines.
Outpost 36 pride themselves on creating true Texas BBQ meaning they use locally grown ingredients, including cattle and pigs from their ranch in Sulphur Springs. It truly is a difference you can detect. Every item on the menu, down to the sliced bread, tastes fresh out of the oven or smoker.
Among Outpost 36’s many meat offerings, the smoked filet mignon stands out as the signature dish that embodies the restaurant’s excellence. This delicately smoked cut of beef is a revelation, with a perfect balance of smokiness and tenderness that melts in your mouth. It’s a testament to the artistry and expertise of their chef and pitmaster Dwight Dowell, who has mastered the delicate process of smoking meats to enhance their natural flavors without overpowering them. Other unexpected meat options include the Bacon Burnt Ends and the Dino Beef Rib (available on Friday and Saturday only).
While the meats at Outpost 36 are undoubtedly the stars of the show, the sides are not to be overlooked. Each dish is carefully crafted to provide the perfect accompaniment to the savory smoked meats. Options like creamy
mac and cheese, tangy coleslaw and smoky green beans are prepared with the same level of care and attention to detail as the main courses. These sides are more than just afterthoughts— they’re well thought out, integral components of the meal, offering balance to the robust flavors of the barbecue.
For bourbon enthusiasts, the bar at Outpost 36 boasts an extensive collection of bourbons, ranging from rare finds to classic favorites, ensuring there’s something for every palate. This impressive selection is curated by Outpost 36 General Manager Trevor Wyatt, who is passionate about bourbon and eager to help guests explore the rich flavors and history behind each bottle. Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado or a curious newcomer, the bar at Outpost 36 promises an unforgettable experience. Enjoy your drink neat, on the rocks or expertly mixed into a craft cocktail, such as their Lone Star Sipper—a blend of bourbon, fresh peach puree, sweet tea, lemon and ginger.
Another defining feature is Outpost 76 in-house butcher shop and meat market tucked inside of Outpost 36—elevating its reputation for quality and freshness. Patrons witness skilled butchers at work, selecting and preparing the finest cuts of meat—offering a wide selection of beef, pork, chicken, seafood and more. Transparency in preparation ensures
only the freshest, highest-quality meats make their way to your plate. Whether it’s brisket, ribs, or their renowned smoked filet mignon, every bite is a testament to their dedication to true Texas BBQ. For those who prefer to take the experience home, the butcher shop offers a selection of premium cuts to cook and enjoy at your leisure.
Outpost 36 isn’t just a BBQ joint, it’s a gathering place. A warm, inviting spot for family dinners and friendly gettogethers. Whether local or visiting, Outpost 36 promises a meal capturing the essence of Southern comfort served with a side of sophistication.
