PROFICIENCY
I remember the first time that I used the word proficient to describe myself on my resume. Being a humble person who views life as a continual learning process, it felt odd for me to admit that I was actually proficient at something because I truly feel like I’m always learning more. I heard a quote that says, “An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made in a narrow field.” And I tend to agree. Proficiency normally comes from one’s own expert status being the result of a lengthy battle of trial and error where you’ve exhausted all of the options for failure— ultimately resulting in success. To become an expert (or be considered an expert) takes years of deliberate practice involving goal setting, consistent feedback, and countless drills to improve your skills with an eye on mastery. It does not happen by accident, and takes dedication to build.
That said, the significance of expertise and wisdom in business cannot be overstated. That’s why in this issue we have put together a compilation of invaluable insights and expert advice from local authorities across various industries. The advice provided by our experts finds its roots in their practical experience. From visionary entrepreneurs to seasoned executives, their responses to our questions offer a guide when considering someone from their field—be it a medical expert or home professional, financial advisor, mortgage lender, counselor, insurance advocate, fine art photographer, or travel connoisseur. Our expert contributors share their wealth of knowledge on an array of topics. My hope is that their guidance will provide you with a valuable perspective and strategy to help you choose the right expert from their various specialties (see “Expert Advice Q&A’ starting on page 20). Learning from the experiences of those who have come before us—and who have honed their craft well enough to be called expert—is a powerful tool to make the best decision.
I appreciate the invaluable wisdom of business experts, the excitement of kids returning to school, and the journey of lifelong learning. Just as seasoned business leaders share their insights with us to navigate their industries, students are embarking on another year in their educational journeys—arming themselves with knowledge. As students embrace new subjects, professionals must also embrace new skills to stay relative in a changing world. Proficiency is not permanent. Without lifelong learning the skills required to be called an expert will expire.

STRENGTHEN
BY TRISHA MITCHELLYOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND LIVE A FULFILLING, FAITHFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE LET THE LORD LEAD YOU
Typically, when we seek advice, we search for the best in that respective field—those with excellent credentials, strong recommendations, the highest customer satisfaction rating, or the newest state-of-the-art equipment. And although it’s important to seek professional advice, Matthew 23:9 (msg) states “Do not set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do.”
Such was the case in 1 Kings, Chapter 12. Rehoboam became the king of Israel once Solomon, his father, died. The people, afraid that they would be treated with cruelty, asked Jeroboam, an administrator, to speak with Rehoboam. The king agreed. He approached Rehoboam and asserted, “your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore lighten the hard service and the heavy yoke your father (Solomon) put upon us, and we will serve you.” Unable to give a swift answer, Rehoboam instructed them to “return” in three days and he would reveal his decision. King Rehoboam then consulted the elders who had served during his father’s lifetime.
“How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked. They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.” But Rehoboam was displeased with the answer he received and rejected the advice of the elders. He then consulted men serving him with whom he had grown up. “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?” The young men replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’” Convinced by his comrades, Rehoboam reached a resolution. He would upstage his father by treating the people significantly worse (verse 14). Though Rehoboam received wise counsel in verses 5-7, that wisdom quickly turned into foolishness in verses 8-14. The result led to division, rebellion, and consequential death (verses 15-18).
If Rehoboam had taken time to pray, perhaps he would have discerned godly advice (verse 15) and prevented the uprising. If he had any doubts regarding the old men’s counsel, there was ample time (three days) to think about what to do, waiting for a response from the Lord. But he made his decision in haste and was influenced by his “homeboys.” Rehoboam proved Proverbs 13:20 true: “he who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” This story teaches us the importance of pursuing godly wisdom in every area of our lives. While it’s perfectly okay to get different opinions and recommendations (Proverbs 11:14), the final decision should always depend on God’s expertise (Proverbs 16:33).
— Proverbs 19:20
Recently, I found myself in a similar situation when seeking a home addition specialist. After searching Google, I narrowed my choices down to four different contractors, and scheduled the appointments. Yet, I was baffled when a plethora of companies showed up to my house without an appointment. How did they obtain my contact information? They were all “registered” as experts, though their lack of professionalism proved otherwise. Even more irksome were the two overly aggressive guys who harassed me for so long, I considered contacting the police to get them removed from my property. It was quite daunting. Overwhelmed and unimpressed with what I experienced, I prayed and waited for directions from the Lord. Without much hesitation, He instructed me to search my old emails for the company who remodeled my home in 2017. And that’s exactly what I did.
Seeking expert advice should not be arduous. However, the world uses a totally different set of rules and guidelines when determining who is best (1 John 2:16). Although there are people who think it’s unnecessary to seek God, those of us who trust Him recognize the importance of prudence, praying about everything (Philippians 4:6). Sadly, we live in a society where God is no longer viewed as an expert. The world has gone from trusting God to trusting Google—relying on “reviews” rather than reaching for the Bible.
As far as my home project goes, I’m overjoyed with the outcome. I started with Google, but I ended with God. There is no doubt that I would have been unhappy with any other contractor other than the one God chose. I’d like to think I observed the right expert—but I didn’t. Thankfully, I made the decision to trust the One (expert) Who referred me to the right one.
Y’all be blessed!
“Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”

My Cu†e Daughter
At the height of summer’s swimsuit season, who couldn’t use a reminder that our bodies are each one of a kind, perfectly designed by our Creator? Pat Noble has published a combination workbook and study guide to address this very issue. It’s called a Devotional Diary and it is titled “My Cu†e Daughter.“ “Cute” stands for “Covered Until The End.”
Inspiration for the book came from Pat’s dad. After the loss of her first baby, Pat felt herself sinking into depression, weighed down by the painful questions that follow the death of a child. She put her questions into a letter to her father. He sent back three pages filled with love and understanding. Pat credits that letter as starting her on a path to healing. She wrote this book to bring that same encouragement to others.
The book contains 52 devotionals to be shared with a young woman aged 14 or older. Pat suggests that a parent or mentor can use it effectively
with a younger person. Then three discussion questions accompany each devotional to spark conversation and sharing. This book would also benefit a person of faith of any age.
According to page four “If you wear a size 0-6, have a certain hair texture and skin tone, you are somehow destined to be beautiful, successful, and happy, But these standards represent lies our culture wants you to believe.” The early part of the book focuses on managing this pressure to conform to cultural standards of beauty, but later devotionals cover various aspects of life we all face.
The “Leap of Faith” page encourages taking risks to enjoy the adventure of life. “Be Adaptable” promotes flexibility, being prepared to change with an open heart and a curiosity about the unfamiliar. Near the end of the book “Enjoy Life, Take Time to Play and Have Fun” leads the reader to delight in God’s creation and celebrate the joys He provides.
Devotional diary of 52 weekly devotionals to be shared with a young lady or woman age 14+
The expectations of this world confuses so many young ladies. Who am I? How am I supposed to behave? How can I be successful?
My Cute Daughter aims to help answer these and other questions from a Biblical point of view.

Otsukimi, or “moon-viewing,” is a Japanese practice believed to have begun in the Heian Period (794–1185) that refers to the tradition of viewing and honoring the annual harvest moon. Historically, Otsukimi was an opportunity to express gratitude for a good harvest and share hope for similar bounty in the future. A full moon is considered auspicious and a clear symbol of abundance. On Otsukimi, it is traditional to gather in a place where the moon can be seen clearly, usually on a date in September, which historic Japanese writings identify as the time of year with the best opportunity to see the moon at its brightest. This is an outdoor festival, weather permitting, it will take place rain or shine. In case of rain, all programs will move indoors. tickets: tinyurl.com/modernOtsukimi

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA MOBILE EDUCATION EXHIBIT MOBILE MUSEUM TOUR HONORING OUR VETERANS
In 2018, Wreaths Across America (WAA) rolled out its Mobile Education Exhibit (MEE). This museum on wheels was designed to share the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach in local communities across the country. Since that time the program and reach has travelled so much further than WAA could have ever anticipated—in 2023 alone, the MEE has visited nine states, joined 83 community events, had 8,495 visitors on board, welcomed home 1,575 Vietnam veterans, and officially thanked 113 military families for their sacrifices. The MEE has seen almost 100k visitors in total since it first hit the road in 2018!
“The goal of the Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit is to bring communities together and teach about the organization’s mission while also remembering the service and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes,” said Trish Gardner, MEE Manager. “The exhibit serves as a mobile museum, educating visitors about the service and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes, as well as serving as an official ‘welcome home’ station for our nation’s Vietnam Veterans. We are always overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from the communities we visit.” When the MEE pulls into your area, all veterans, active-duty military, their families, and the local community members are invited and encouraged to visit, take a tour, and speak with WAA Ambassadors and volunteers. The public tour stops for the MEE are free and open to the public. Since its introduction, the MEE has traveled “coast–to–coast” several times, logging in countless hours and miles visiting communities across our nation.
As a Commemorative Partner of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration (VWC) since 2017, the MEE has enabled WAA to welcome home over 6,000 of the more than estimated six million Vietnam War veterans living in this country, helping to connect them and share their stories with members of their community and teach the next generation about their sacrifices and duty. According to the VWC, since 2011 the Commemorative and its partners have officially welcomed home 3.7 million Vietnam veterans with a pinning ceremony that includes a signed proclamation from the President of the United States. You can view a full list of the Commemorative partners by visiting tinyurl.com/VW50listing. There are over two million Vietnam veterans across the United States that have yet to be officially welcomed home. The MEE will be in Maryland and Delaware in the month of August, then traveling to CT, NJ, GA, MA, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT before joining the “Escort to Arlington” in December to help deliver veterans’ wreaths as part of National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, December 16, 2023. To learn more about the MEE or submit a request for it to come to your community visit the website below.

VISIT THE KELLER FARMER’S MARKET EVERY SATURDAY NOW THROUGH OCTOBER 28TH PLUS CHRISTMAS MARKET
The Keller Farmers Market is a casual, open air, seasonal market located by the creek in beautiful Bear Creek Park that offers fresh Texas produce, meats, tamales, baked goods, artisan bread, cheese, salsa, pasta, pickles, jellies and jams, honey, baked goods, prepared foods, pet products and crafts—all from the state of Texas or within 150 miles. KFM is a convenient and safe place for the whole family. After your market visit, enjoy the relaxing walking trails and large parks surrounding the area. The market offers something different—whether it’s the freshest produce, live music, chef demonstrations, or health and wellness presentations—making it is as much a center of commerce as it is for the community to reconnect. KFM is open rain or shine, but may close without prior notice during extreme weather conditions in order to maintain the safety of shoppers and vendors. It’s a great place to bring the kids, throw a Frisbee, and pick up great local food products. Come experience the market. Learn from the farmers and wellness providers. Talk with local artisans. Make your own statement in support of local food!
The Keller Farmers Market, a nonprofit, non-governmental 501c3 organization, is the weekly local food source for our community. KFM operates with a vision of impacting the community’s health and well being. The mission of KFM is to enhance the lives of the community by creating reliable access to healthy and fresh locally grown food, delivering consistent wellness education, and generating much-needed income and support for local farmers, food producers and artisans by providing programs that foster social gathering. It doesn’t get any better than this! Produce at our market was often picked within 24 hours of sale. It cannot get any fresher than if you grew and picked it yourselves. Farmers are still the “salt of the earth” –very long, hard hours – they love bringing their goodness to Keller. When allowed to ripen on the vine, produce develops the full flavor nature intended. Produce starts losing nutritional value soon after harvest, so fresh, farmers market foods still retain nutrients. Many members of our community have discovered just how spectacular their Saturdays can be at KFM. Building relationships with vendors and neighbors, enjoying the beautiful music, fresh air, great food, pet days, artisan days, farm to table dinners – walking their dogs and watching their children have fun with face painting, story time, making healthy food choices, and getting to know the local chefs through the Chef Series makes for many enjoying our Keller community.
Vendors sell Texas-made products and original art items. All vendors meeting KFM criteria are welcome. Every Saturday from March to end of October, and their Christmas Market on the 9th of December. However, no markets on March 25th and April 1st. The Keller Farmers Market is conveniently located near the creek at the beautiful Bear Creek Park at 400 Bear Creek Parkway in Keller, Texas 76248.

SL COVER STORY
Most of us have spent more time at home over the last few years and it’s changed the way we view our spaces — both aesthetically and functionally. While white kitchens and minimalist walls had their moment, interior designers have noticed a shift towards more personalized spaces that include our favorite colors and patterns – even if they aren’t on trend at the moment. From bold paint to textured walls to layered textiles and funky tile, now is the time to create a space that makes you smile. Any home redesign project comes with a lot of moving parts. It can be a daunting task to undertake on your own — but it doesn’t have to be. One person who can assist you with the bulk of the process is interior designer Susan Semmelmann. Together with her team at Semmelmann Interiors, Susan looks at the big picture and all the little details to design a beautiful, yet highly functional, space that reflects your personal style. Using training and expertise in space planning and stylistic design, they transform your space into not only a place, but an experience. With services ranging from remodeling your existing house to guiding customers through their new build from the ground up, Semmelmann Interiors has every facet of design and construction covered. Afterall, their style is your style — and that’s why they’ve seen so much success.
“I fully believe that if we don’t give back, then what are we working for — it is helping others that makes this world a better place.”

It’s important to me that we’re authentic and relational with our clients, with each other, and with our business partners Our mission is and, always will be, “The spirit of living is in the giving.” Life is not about what you get, it is about what you give... DESIGN WITH YOU IN MIND
Semmelmann Interiors combines innovation and creativity with classic design traditions which in turn make the spaces not just beautiful, but also livable. To create an interior design, you need to consider your favorite color schemes, textures, materials and even the heights of your existing and future pieces. The different combinations of these furnishings can change the feel in the room dramatically. These are details that can be overlooked when taking on a big home project on your own. But it’s these small details that make a big difference on how people experience their surroundings. “Our heart-centered approach focuses on excellence, down to the very smallest detail,” admits Susan. “I want to give you what you want in design so that you will get back the experiences and memories of knowing it was designed around you and what you see for yourself and those you want to share with.” The company leverages the experience with custom-crafted furnishing and accessories bringing your vision to life. Whether it’s residential or commercial, Susan and her team strive to maintain uniqueness in every project.

THE 2023 DREAM STREET
THE SPIRIT OF LIVING IS IN THE GIVING
Semmelmann Interiors has built a reputation around being passionate about bringing their clients’ dreams to life. Apart from her passion for designing homes, Susan is also driven by her charitable work. “The Spirit of Living is in the Giving” is the motto for Semmelmann Interiors. Susan says it summarizes her purpose in life for doing what she does. “I live to share my heart and talents with the world around me. One core value within my company is we all have a giver’s heart—it is amazing the power that comes from a giving spirit.” Susan’s attitude of gratitude was born out of a trying time in her family’s life. In 2010, Susan’s husband Marc was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. At the time, Susan was working a full-time job. She then carried over the operations of Marc’s business, all while caring for her children and making back and forth trips to MD Anderson. During Marc’s stay at MD Anderson, Susan came across a charitable organization called Raquel’s Wings for Life, which flew her back and forth throughout his treatment. Susan and Marc pledged to pay forward this kindness. Soon after Marc’s recovery, he received his pilot’s license and now flies patients and their families to and from MD Anderson several days a week. Holding true herself to the pledge, Susan surprised the non-profit organization Wish with Wings with a complete custom makeover of their office lobby. Susan continues this tradition with the Semmelmann Interiors Foundation, which provides charitable makeovers for one charity each year. “I live and work to give back to those around me. The more you give the more you get back, and what you get back is a full heart to share joy and passion with others.”

3:16 ROOFING
3:16 Roofing & Construction exists to change the perception of their industry by glorifying God in all they do and running their company with honesty and integrity. They’ve built a strong reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and commitment to customer satisfaction. If you’re looking for a reputable, local roofing company, look no further.
AND CONSTRUCTION
3:16 Roofing & Construction is a locally-run, faith-based, family-owned general contracting company. Owners Marcos and Rachel Garza strive for complete customer satisfaction and are honored to have the opportunity to give back to their community. Numerous 5-Star reviews and “Best Roofing Company” accolades support their mission to treat your home or business like their own. Their licensed roofing contractors can provide you with a free residential or commercial roof inspection and photo report. Get a clean bill of health or replacement/repair options if needed.
Q: How can I be certain I choose the best roofing company? It is essential to consider the following factors: Reputation—check the reviews, ask for references, and consult with friends or neighbors to ensure the company has a good reputation. Experience—find a company that has extensive experience. Licensing and insurance—ensure they are properly licensed and insured to avoid any potential liabilities. Warranty—make sure they offer a comprehensive warranty on both the materials and their workmanship.
Q: What defines your company success? We have been in the roofing industry for over 10 years and ran another successful roofing company prior to this one. That is actually part of our success story—we wanted to start a Christian-based roofing company where we could hold Bible studies and share the Gospel. We trust the Lord with our business and are grateful to be able to have a company where our foundation is firm in our beliefs!
Q: How do you help protect my property? We understand the importance of keeping your property protected—we want the same done for us! We start by sending you a list of what you can do to help us protect valuables you wouldn’t have thought about, like the pictures and paintings on the walls inside your home, your expensive grill that sits on your back porch, etc. We protect landscaping and windows by using tarps and OSB boards. Our goal is to have your home look like we were never even there!
Q: Is there going to be someone on-site with whom I can communicate? Every client of ours works with a dedicated Project Manager that assists them with their job from beginning to end. On the day of install, your Project Manager will be on-site and in communication during the entire project.
SL exper t advice Q&A
Q: More than my roof was damaged in the recent storms, can you help? While roof damage is a common problem that homeowners face during extreme weather conditions, it’s not all that gets damaged. We specialize in storm damage restoration, roof repairs and installation services—plus we can help you to repair/replace gutters, windows, and fencing, as well as interior and exterior painting.
Q: Do you provide roofing products, colors and choices for us to pick from? Replacing your roof should be a fun process. We have all the different types of shingles and colors. You can come into our office and choose shingles from our showroom, or choose from a larger selection online. Your personal Project Manager will guide you through the process of choosing what will work best for you and your home.
Q: Do you work with my HOA? Making sure you are compliant with your HOA is paramount and we are very familiar with what local HOAs approve and disapprove.
Q: Will you work with my insurance company to get my roof covered? Filing a claim can be one of the most stressful processes as a homeowner. Our top priority is to guide you from start to finish to ensure it all goes as smoothly as possible.
Q: What happens if I need a new roof and I have solar panels? No problem! We can coordinate directly with your solar installer to have panels detached and reinstalled. If they’re unavailable to provide service or you wish to use a new company, we’re happy to take care of repairs. We suggest making sure it doesn’t void the warranty prior to us performing repairs. If you’re looking to add solar to your home, we can help! The perfect time to explore Green options is when your roof is being replaced.
Q: What’s the warranty on my new roof? We offer a 5-year labor warranty—meaning if any installation errors occurred, we cover the cost of repairing your roof. We are also Select Shingle Master Certified through CertainTeed which allows us to offer a 5Star 50-year warranty when you use their full roofing system. You receive a ‘Certificate of Completion’ with your warranty details.
Q: Can you provide me with references? We love when customers ask for references, because we know that they are looking for the best—not necessarily the cheapest.
Q: Do you stand behind your work? We strive for perfection, however unforeseen circumstances can arise. Your satisfaction is our top priority and we work diligently to ensure you’re more than satisfied with 3:16!
with MARCOS & RACHEL GARZA, OWNERS OF 3:16 ROOFING & CONSTRUCTIONTHE BENEFIT LINK
Founder, Diana Scothorn and her husband/CEO Stewart Scothorn, ultimately decided on the name
“The Benefit Link” because they desired to be the link between seniors and their insurance. They want clients to know they have a constant support system—that they are always here to make sure they’re taken care of in the best way possible advocating for them.
MEDICARE ADVOCATES
The Benefit Link provides objective guidance seniors need in order to make an educated decision about their Medicare supplement plans. There is no charge to their clients for services and they’re available on a direct basis every day for all 50 states. Connect with a Medicare advocate who will help you navigate the challenges of getting the best coverage possible. The Benefit Link is passionate about providing you with peace-of-mind.
Q: What does The Benefit Link offer? The Benefit Link specializes in helping seniors obtain the best coverage possible regarding Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), and Life Insurance, as well as cancer, dental and vision plans. We are licensed insurance agents with more then 30 years experience. Healthcare is not one-size-fits-all, so we help you find the best plan to suit your unique needs. Our clients save over $500 per year on average and get Medicare co-pays/co-insurance covered. Get your no cost consultation and learn how to avoid high Medicare medical bills.
Q: Is Medicare just for seniors? No. Most people think of Medicare as just a health insurance program for senior citizens. While it’s true that most Medicare participants are over the age of 65, there are multiple ways to qualify for Medicare. At The Benefit Link, working with seniors is our specialty, but we’re able to guide anyone through the Medicare process and what their options are—at any age. If you are interested in learning more about what makes someone eligible for Medicare, reach out to us today. Our experts will make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and enroll on time.
Q: How much does your service cost?
There is absolutely no charge to clients for our services and we are available on a direct basis every day. Medicare supplement plans are standardized by federal government, so there will be no difference in coverage from one carrier to another. The difference is cost, stability, and service.
Q: Are you connected to any one specific insurance agency? We have always been, and will continue to remain, independent of any insurance company so that we may objectively advise and provide guidance to those who need to acquire Medicare Supple-

ment healthcare coverage. We have access to virtually every major insurance carrier and their plans. We’re dedicated to knowing everything we can by tracking premiums, rate increase history, and trends across all companies so we can give you as much information as possible. Our services are always completely free of charge.
Q: Why should we choose The Benefit Link over another benefits coordinator? We provide guidance and support that’s 100% objective and in the best interest of our clients. We’re dedicated to forming lifelong relationships with our clients—we pray for them daily, we’re available on a direct basis every day, and our primary purpose is to do what’s best for them.
Q: How have you taken standardized Medicare and made it personal? This is a very personal experience, but it doesn’t feel like insurance companies understand that. Although Medicare is standardized, there are different plans, supplements and options you might not know about or are overwhelmed by. We understand your needs and provide information required to make the best choice for yourself.
Q: Why Medicare advocacy? Diana’s passion has been fueled by her personal life story. At the tender age of seven, Diana’s sister was diagnosed with diabetes. Due to the severity of the disease, she had a kidney
transplant by the time she was 20. By 23, she was on Medicare. Diana’s sister lost her life to the disease at 35 years old. Diana also assisted both of her parents before they passed away as they faced COPD and cancer—both were on Medicare. Diana is not only passionate about providing seniors with Medicare insurance, but she understands that providing peace of mind during the transition is of utmost importance. She wants to make sure that every client has the very best coverage!
Q: Is The Benefit Link something clients only use to sign up for Medicare? No. We provide constant, lifelong support. Most call us initially to help with guiding them through the Medicare maze and getting on the right plan. Our clients know they can call any time they have a question. We specialize in assisting seniors, however we help people across the U.S. with health and life insurance needs. With rising costs in healthcare for people under 65, more seek cancer, heart attack or stroke policies for lower premium critical care coverage.
Q: When can I sign up for Medicare? You become eligible for Medicare when you turn 65, however you are eligible to sign up for your medicare supplemental insurance six months before your 65th birthday. We advise seniors to sign up as soon as possible. If you sign up after you turn 65, there could be penalties incurred.
BUCKINGHAM
Bryan Clintsman, CFP® has over 30 years of experience helping families achieve their financial goals. Bryan founded Clintsman Financial Planning in 2002 which recently became part of the Buckingham Strategic Wealth group this year. This merger provided even more nationwide resources to clients from the same local Southlake office.
STRATEGIC WEALTH
Q: The last year or so has seemed hard on our economy. Financially, what should I be doing? Discussions of inflation and even a recession can be scary, but the good news is they do not necessarily change your financial actions. The U.S. economy is one of the strongest in the world and has not only survived but thrived through 17 recessions in the last 100 years, including world wars, political unrest, inflationary periods, etc. So the best financial strategies remain the same: think carefully about large discretionary purchases if possible, try to maintain a goal of six months of cash reserves, and find ways to make yourself occupationally indispensable. Furthermore, if it has been a long time since you have looked at your monthly spending in detail now would be a good time to do that, as well as prepare a backup plan budget in case of a loss of income. Remember, keeping an appropriate level of cash is still critical to being able to be proactive instead of reactive to financial curveballs.
Q: The stock market seems especially volatile. Should I be invested in stocks right now? Similar to the resiliency of our economy, the U.S. stock market has produced a robust 10.5% annualized return over the past 100 years – the same time period of our country’s history dotted with wars, recessions, and political infighting. In fact, just so far this year while many are still contemplating whether or not to invest in the U.S. stock market, it has quietly produced gains of about 17%. But investors only received those strong historical returns by staying invested through all the years— good and bad. Investment brokers often want you to frequently move in and out of stocks providing them with added commis-
The Buckingham Strategic Wealth Southlake office remains one of the largest Fee-Only, independent, faith-based offices in the area whose advisors also hold the prestigious CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM designation. They are proud to be working solely for client’s interests in their journey to make the best financial decisions possible.
sions, but this strategy has been longproven to be inferior to our evidencedbased investment strategy. Given that the U.S. stock market has historically been up 75% of the last 100 individual calendar years and it has been proven almost impossible to consistently and accurately predict the direction of the markets, this is the main reason this “stay in your seat” strategy has been so rewarding to longterm investors.
Q: What is the value the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM designation? In the U.S. only about 29% of financial advisors are CFPs®. The CFP® designation is one of the most prestigious designations in the financial planning industry, requiring years of coursework, industry experience and includes one of the highest regarded ethical and fiduciary standards. And since a CFP® professional focuses on creating an actual financial plan for your future, this provides a better chance of reaching your financial goals.
Q: With all the automated financial resources available today, do I really need an actual financial plan? Nobody seems to mind the plane flying on autopilot until there is an aircraft emergency, at which point they want a pilot with critical wisdom, experience, and judgement to take over. Statistics show
a much higher success rate of reaching your retirement goals by working with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM. This is no different than choosing to hire a personal trainer to lose weight versus crafting a diet/workout program on your own. The main reason to have an actual financial plan and work with a CFP ® is that financial plans cover a lifetime, during which continual adjustments are needed as your life unfolds.
Q: How do I choose the right financial expert for my needs? After decades in this industry, here is what I have learned. Everyone goes through financial seasons in their lives. Earlier in your life financial issues may have been simpler than they are now, so most people “graduate” to needing a financial expert as they get closer to (and in) retirement. Remember, it is harder to keep wealth than to build wealth. Also, since most financial advisors are “captive” in the financial products they can recommend, consider using an independent fiduciary advisor who can recommend investment and other products that are actually best for the client instead of the advisors own pocketbook. And finally, consider a comprehensive financial planner who can focus on not just investments, but also critical areas such as tax and estate planning, insurance, college funding, and retirement planning.

Dr. Greg L. Gist’s dental practice has sat in the same location in Southlake for over 40 years. His uncompromising style of dental care has grown a loyal following of quality conscious patients who have chosen clinical excellence and world class dentistry.
GIST & HAYES DENTISTRY
RESTORATIVE / COSMETIC
Along with his junior partner and protégé, Dr. Carter Hayes, Dr. Gist and their amazing dental team are truly in a league all their own. You will find no managed care philosophy’s in this practice. They believe relationship driven health care is the gold standard of quality. They know their patients by their names and their unique life experiences—not their insurance number and co-pay. They are very proud to offer a level of care that is extremely unique in the marketplace today.
Q: How long have you been in business? We have been privileged to treat patients from all over the country at this same location in Southlake for 40 years. Our restorative studio was constructed around the way I love to practice. It was built with large oversized operatories and panoramic ceiling-to-floor windows that bring a sense of art and extreme views of the beautiful property that our office has been on for all these years! Together with the most amazing dental team in America, we always aim to be a blessing to every patient who enters our practice.
Q: I hide my smile, but I’m afraid fixing it will hurt, what options do I have? If you have been hiding your smile, putting up with pain or putting off going to the dentist—we offer patients our safe sedation dental techniques which means you can have years of dental treatments done quickly and with little or no discomfort at all! I confidently guarantee you the finest, safest and most comfortable care in dentistry. All of our cases can be accomplished with oral sedation, so that we can be efficient with our patient’s busy schedules, as well as to be able to put our most anxious patients at ease. Sedation is your answer.
Q: Is it really important to get my teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months? Preventive dental care is very important throughout your life, no matter what your age! By practicing good oral hygiene at home and scheduling regular cleanings you can help keep your smile bright and healthy for many years to come. Our hygiene staff looks for early signs of gum disease and other issues that might plague the mouth and your overall health.
Q: Is it true my failing dentistry could be making me sick? Yes, it is possible and that’s why I only uses biocompatible and
SL exper t advice Q&A
time-tested materials that support systemic, periodontal and aesthetic health. It’s important to understand that dental biofilm—the recurring bacteria that forms daily in your mouth and under failing dentistry—affects your systemic health. This bacterial growth referred to as ‘sepsis’ leaks into your blood system through periodontal ligaments and the pulp chambers of all teeth. This bacterial invasion effects the gums, making them bleed, opening up more entry portals for further bacteria infiltration. If these bacteria infect your blood, they’re instantly in every organ of your body. This is why studies emerge each year connecting dental and/or periodontal infections with a vast array of systemic disease—like cardiovascular and cerebrovascular pathology, lung infections, and new research shows a link to certain cancers. I advise that patients seek out a dental professional that has a firm handle on the concept of dental sepsis as it relates to any restorative procedures. Using infection-free materials and aggressive control of this dental sepsis is a radically different approach than many patients have been exposed to in the past and one that’s making patients healthier now and into their future!
Q: Do you offer your patients financing options? Yes we do! My practice offers
a 3-year 0% interest financing option for our patients who need comprehensive restorative and cosmetic dentistry. You can now finance that beautiful smile with First Financial Bank—who is our preferred lender and my local bank for four decades. We will also accept Care Credit. Care Credit that’s accepted by over 150,000 providers and is the nation’s leading patient financing program. They can help make the dental health procedures you want possible today! We also extend a New Patient Offer to those new to our practice. You can receive a complimentary diagnostic appointment valued at $500 which includes x-rays and a comprehensive exam. It does not include your hygiene appointment and you must mention this offer when you schedule your first appointment.
Q: Why don’t you accept insurance? We believe that a patient should have the final say as to the level of care that they want to pursue. Decisions made by insurance companies tend to best serve insurance companies. This is why my dental practice has no managed care philosophies in place. Being relationship driven, we know patients by name, not insurance coverage! We believe that fee for service and relationship driven healthcare is the gold standard of quality for our patients. We invite you to experience The Gist Way!

Rhonda James, founder of James Landscaping, Inc., and her team are dedicated to expanding the beauty of North Texas while working with nature to preserve and protect resources. They use native Texas plants and welladapted plants that are droughttolerant, insect-resistant, hearty and manageable. A commitment to quality work and customer satisfaction is their cornerstone.
JAMES LANDSCAPING, INC.
James Landscaping, Inc. offers landscape renovation, new design, and installation for residential and commercial properties specializing in low-maintenance designs with a natural look. They are a full-service contracting company, capable of arranging all aspects of your outdoor living space with integrated plans for phased work or future installation. The team’s experience allows them to design your outdoor space to match your preferences and the light, the soil, and the water conditions of your property. Discover naturally beautiful landscapes that are designed just for your lifestyle.
Q: What is the James Landscaping Design and installation process? It is a deliberately and carefully planned process that will result in reinventing, repurposing or revitalizing your personal surroundings. From the time you set an appointment to the completion of your installation, you can expect the process to take approximately 6 months.
Q: What is my first step? You will start by setting an appointment. Typically, we schedule appointments several weeks out. Our design process begins when you make a call to set an appointment—after which you will receive a new client questionnaire. It is similar to new patient paperwork at the doctor’s office. Your answers to this questionnaire will help our sales representative prepare for the site visit and also help our designers understand any concerns or design aesthetic you prefer. Please know that we require a property survey before we visit in order to complete the evaluation as accurately as possible. Next is a site visit.
Q: What can I expect at my site visit? You should know that at the site visit, you (the client) are only required for the first hour— reps can be there much longer! During the site visit, our sales rep will meet with you to discuss your landscape issues and wishes. We will decide together if a full-color, CAD landscape design is needed or if it is possible to make a proposal without a design. During the visit, our sales representatives will take detailed notes, evaluate any issues, take photos, and even film a short video to describe your existing landscape and design requirements.
Q: How long will it be before I can see our proposed design ? During the site visit, you would have signed a design agree-
ment that details the price of the design, the scope and the design timeline. Our designers will then review the site notes, photos and videos and create your new custom landscape on a full color, CADgenerated design. The design will be ready to present to you in about 12-15 weeks, possibly sooner.
Q: How will my new landscape design be presented? A few days before the ZOOM presentation, we deliver a folder including your design, installation proposal, plant photos, and a lighting catalog. We give you this time to review the design so you will be familiar with it at the presentation. During the ZOOM presentation, our sales representatives will review the design with you and answer any questions you may have. We offer installation phasing so you do not have to install the whole design at one time. Once you are ready to proceed, you sign the proposal and place a down payment to get on the installation schedule. Depending on the time of year, work could begin anywhere between a couple of weeks and six weeks. This presentation normally takes somewhere between .5 to 1.5 hours.
Q: How long will the actual install take? Depending on the size of your design… your installation may be one week—more or less. This is the most exciting part! We
will transform your landscape to the specs of your design. We have the best crews in the business! Some of them have been with us for over 20 years. They know landscaping and they will respect your property. The crew will leave your property clean at the end of every day and the installation progress will be evident.
Q: How long have you been in business? James Landscaping, Inc. has been creating personalized landscape designs in Northeast Tarrant County since 1989. Q: What defines your company success? We exist because of outstanding clients. Whether you’re looking for a waterscape, hardscape, retainer wall—or all the above, our designs are custom to you. Naturally there is work, family and pet care situations to consider but, for the most part, everyone has at least one weekend in a year to spare for themselves. Start planning some travel time for you—and only you. You probably need it and you definitely deserve it!
Q: Where do I start when I’m ready to plan a trip? It’s easy! I want to know your travel dreams and create a customized journey you’ll love—so we begin with the ‘Design A Trip’ form on my website. Next, I present some preliminary ideas and we discuss itinerary details including activities, excursions, and dining options. Then, we finalize selections together and you will have a detailed itinerary prior to travel. All you have to do is pack!
Q: What unique experiences can you design? I think outside the box to provide carefully curated travel experiences focused on bucket lists, shared interests, as well as group dynamics. Golf travel is one of the most popular groups and sports-focused trips where guests play world-class European courses in different
countries all in one journey. Adventurous clients enjoy expedition travel to the arctics—where its not uncommon to spend the night on an iceberg! Would you like a helicopter ride from the airport to your resort? Prefer to stay in an Italian castle? Need a photographer for sparkling Instagram photos? I know the resources to customize any activity or event for an unforgettable... unique... journey.
Q: Do you charge a fee for your services? There is not a fee in most cases. For customized planning and itineraries on trips of more than five days and for group travel, I do charge a $250 design fee after our initial consultation to protect the time utilized for research, booking, and itinerary management throughout the client’s trip.
Q: What are current trends in travel? One current travel trend is river cruising. It’s a wonderful cultural and culinary way to see hard-to-reach places and multiple destinations at any time of the year. My couples are seeking Greece more than any other location now. And, of course, allinclusive beach resorts are always a favorite for sun seekers. When you’re ready... let’s grab a glass of bubbly and get started planning your customized trip of a lifetime.
OLIVIA WEDEL
Dr. Olivia Wedel is helping women feel hopeful with a renewed sense of purpose and joy. She’s navigating the unique terrain of women’s mental health, including perinatal and postpartum needs, life transitions, and career-related struggles. Things don’t have to stay this way. It is possible to feel hopeful and renewed in your mind and spirit. Change is possible.
COUNSELING & CONSULTING
The process of therapy is much like the metaphor of climbing a mountain—you will move at your own pace and reach the top (your goals) in your own way. Dr. Olivia Wedel will be part of this process as your guide. And then together, you work on solutions for improved clarity and renewal of your body, mind, and spirit. She’s helping women realize that they can feel better, think more clearly, and move forward with focus and intention. Even if you are so tired and frustrated you don’t know where to begin... there is hope!
Q: I think I might need therapy, but how do I know? Therapy is beneficial for everyone at various times in life. It is hard to give only one answer for how one might know they need therapy, because we all have different needs and things for which we hope. However, when thoughts and feelings lead to feeling stuck, overwhelmed, frustrated, and/or exhausted to the point your functioning is impacted, those are signs therapy might be helpful. I also want to promote the fact that something doesn’t necessarily have to be ‘wrong’ to seek therapy. Sometimes it’s simply helpful to have an objective, supportive person to share your thoughts and feelings. Verbal processing in the therapeutic context is very healing.
Q: What is a therapy session like? My approach is warm and collaborative. I believe clients are experts on their own lives, which is very solution-oriented, and if we can find ways to feel hopeful, then it can really assist with minimizing distress. When a client trusts me with their care, they invite me into their world, and I take that seriously. Therapy is a safe, non-judgmental space for conversations clients need to have, and one of the ways I guide this is by asking about their best hopes and what they most want to be different. Therapy can really help identify solutions and resources while building on sustainable change.
Q: How can therapy help me? Therapy helps you know you are not alone. It’s one more step in the right direction for ending the stigma of mental health. There is no shame in seeking help. Therapy helps individuals feel validated, hopeful, and empowered. I like to help clients identify resources, skills, and abilities in relation to improving distress tolerance. I also love sharing education on the brain and how it works to protect and support us—clients are amazed when they learn their brain can be ‘retrained’ or ‘rewired’ with new skills and tools for managing the emotions of daily life. I seek a lot of feedback from my clients on what’s working and when things are better—and if not, how can we do something different to achieve desired results.
mental health. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor. I am trained and certified through Postpartum Support International in Perinatal Mental Health to provide specialized services for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. I work primarily with postpartum depression, anxiety and rage. Screening and supporting mothers during postpartum time frame prevents prolonged distress and can save lives.
Q: How long will I need to be in therapy? This is different for everyone. I’ve had clients who felt they got what they needed in 4-6 sessions and others for several months. With respect to your time and planning ahead, the discharge process starts well in advance of the last session. I provide a unique care plan based on your needs and goals. It serves as a road map, so you know what I’ll be working on for our sessions.
Q: What are postpartum care planning sessions? Mental health must be included in your birth plan, but it’s normally left out. Then moms are caught off guard when they have symptoms after having a baby. Having a plan that supports sleep, nutrition, mental health, and household needs minimizes stress that may arise. Families aren’t left wondering what to do, or waiting on things to just get better. There’s no need to wait! I love helping families with postpartum plans
OLIVIA WEDEL COUNSELING & CONSULTING, PLLCand may be done virtually or in person.
Q: Can I bring someone to therapy with me? Personal relationships are important and navigating them is essential if you think there’s a need. I don’t offer couples therapy, but I have many resources and referrals I can provide for couples and family therapists. Please do not hesitate to ask. Postpartum planning services are designed for couples and they are psychoeducational in nature.
Q: What if even you don’t understand my problems? Since my area of specialization is very specific in terms of women’s needs and various aspects of prenatal, perinatal, and maternal mental health, I am very careful in my screening process to ensure I am a good fit. When someone reaches out for therapy it’s imperative they feel like it is a good fit too, and we talk about this during the free consultations I provide in advance of scheduling. If I don’t understand your problems or they are outside of my area of expertise, I will provide referrals for other therapists who can help. It’s important to keep an open mind when going to therapy—it’s an investment of time, energy, and money, and sometimes things do not improve right away. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t working. Change is definitely possible, and I strive to inspire that belief along with hope that things will get better!
SAVAGE STUDIO
Photographer Alycia Savage has just celebrated 22 years in business this month. She’s well known for shooting seniors, babies, families, maternity, newborns, kiddos, and even pets and boudoir-style photos. She captures memories and moments to be preserved and cherished for years to come.
FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY
In addition to creating beautiful portraits, Alycia Savage is also an international award winner, print competition judge and educational speaker—teaching thousands of photographers from across the world every year.
Q: What type of photography do you specialize in? I own a commercial, fine art photography studio in Keller Town Center. Savage Studio is a product-based boutique providing clients a luxury experience and premium art pieces including, custom heirloom albums, canvas gallery wraps, hand torn art, acrylic blocks, metal masterpieces and custom frames. We cater to families, high school seniors, corporate professionals, beauty and portrait sessions. I’ve always had a passion for photography and now I get to share that with my clients!
Q: I get nervous in front of the camera, how do you make clients comfortable? I have been told that I have an out-going and silly personality which helps put my subjects at ease in front of the camera and makes my sessions lots of fun! My boutique studio is a safe space where my clients feel calm and secure. I will guide you on posing so you never feel anxious about what to do.
Q: What’s the best part about your job? After becoming a mother, I realized how quickly my children changed right before my very eyes. Relentlessly, I started to document their little lives through countless photographs—knowing they would capture a glimpse of the person they were at each particular moment in their life. That’s the best part of my job. I get to capture those priceless memories and milestones that might otherwise be forgotten! And now with over 22 years as a full time professional photographer, I have been so very fortunate to be able to capture these special moments officially since 2001.
Q: How much do you charge? This is an investment in preserving your memories. My fees include the photographer’s time and
talent, custom editing of images and an In-Person Ordering Session at my Keller studio within two weeks after your session. Prints, files and products are purchased separately from the session fee. Portrait sessions can be either in studio or on location in the DFW metroplex. Due to high demand and to ensure I maintain a superior level of service, I have a $500 minimum investment for every session. Most clients invest between $1500-$5000 on their custom photography. I also offer clients a 0% interest financing plan. You can follow me on social media and join my email list for seasonal sales and specials.
Q: How do you define your success? True success comes from knowing I’m creating family heirlooms by preserving once in a lifetime memories for generations to come. The excitement, smiles, and tears of happiness on my clients’ faces is one of the most rewarding feelings I experience. When I began my career as a professional photographer, my priority was to provide relaxing and fun experiences with amazing art products. I am honored to be able to say that I still photograph almost all of my very first clients after 22 years in business. It’s an amazing feeling to get to photograph a high school senior that I have been photographing since their mother’s maternity session!
Q: How should I prepare for my session? It depends on the type of portrait, but here are suggestions that will be helpful for most sessions. Schedule appointments—haircuts, manicures, pedicures … whatever touchups you’re planning, make sure to get on your stylist’s calendar early. If you plan on a haircut or color, do so at least one week in advance. Be sure to shave the day of your appointment too (especially guys). Brows need to be waxed/plucked/shaped how you want them. No heavy tanning or spray tanning before the shoot! Tanning in excess can look unnatural and can throw your skin tone off. If you do plan spray or self tan, be sure the ankles, knees, armpits, hands and wrists are not blotchy. Don’t forget nails! Your hands will end up in some of your favorite poses, so be sure to take time to make them presentable. Have your nails manicured and pedicured a day or two before your session. We will always suggest neutral colors to keep the overall look soft. Nude, blush, cream, ivory or french tips will finish off your look perfectly. Bright or really dark colors can distract from the overall creamy tones of the portraits. Most importantly, be as relaxed as possible. I give full direction on poses and expressions so you don’t have to worry. Arrive to your session with a great attitude and be ready to have fun creating heirlooms that you and your family will treasure for a lifetime.

Dr. Mason, Dr. Dinah Wan, and Dr. Matthew Novak are delighted to help you on your journey to transformative, natural-looking beauty.
PLASTIC SURGERY
Dr. Matthew Novak offers the full spectrum of surgical aesthetic procedures for the face, nose, breast, and body. Patient satisfaction and outcomes are his top priorities, and he is driven by the fact that he can make a huge impact in people’s lives. When you’ve earned the reputation and have the experience that Southlake Plastic Surgery has, you can bet they make patients feel welcome, informed, and comfortable the whole way through their journey.
Q: What should I look for in a plastic surgeon? When looking for a plastic surgeon, you should choose someone that you trust. Carefully review the surgeon’s training and education, experience, and bedside manner by researching their website, social media, and patient reviews. Ultimately, you will want to schedule a consultation with the surgeon to discuss your surgical goals and desires. If you have any uncertainty after the consult, consider scheduling a consult with another surgeon for a different perspective.
Q: H ow can I determine if I am a good candidate for plastic surgery? Being a suitable candidate for plastic surgery involves several considerations. First, evaluate your overall health. Candidates should be in good physical and mental health—with no underlying medical conditions that could pose risks. Next, have clear and realistic expectations about the outcomes. Understand that surgery can enhance, not completely transform, your appearance. Discuss your goals with your surgeon. Assess your lifestyle and willingness to follow pre- and post-operative instructions. A responsible candidate is committed to proper aftercare, which contributes to successful outcomes.
Q: What can I expect during my initial consultation? During our initial consultation, I will spend time getting to know you and to understand your concerns, desires, and surgical goals. I will perform a thorough medical and surgical history, as well as a targeted physical exam. I will present the options to you, offer my recommendations, and discuss any risks in collaboration with your desires to create a mutually agreedupon surgical plan. You’ll be provided with a quote for the procedure that same day.
Q: What is the process like if I choose to have plastic surgery? Opting for any plastic surgery typically involves several key
SL exper t advice Q&A
steps. First is the initial consultation. After deciding to proceed, pre-operative tests and evaluations are conducted—these vary by patient, but typically include lab tests for everyone and an EKG if you are over 50. On the day of surgery, you’ll undergo the procedure under anesthesia. Recovery time also varies by procedure, but post-operative rest, follow-up appointments, and adhering to care instructions are crucial. Patience is key as final results often take time to fully manifest. Throughout, open communication with your surgeon and our team is essential for a successful and satisfying outcome.
Q: How will I know if my issues require surgical or non-surgical treatment options? Determining if you’ll need surgical or non-surgical treatments involves many factors. Surgical options are generally suitable for significant changes—such as reshaping or restructuring. Non-surgical treatments, like injectables or lasers, are better for subtle enhancements or temporary adjustments. During a collaborative consultation, our team considers your desired outcomes, recovery time, and budget to arrive at the optimal treatment.
Q: Will I have to have a hospital stay or will it be outpatient surgery? Whether you will require a hospital stay or undergo outpatient surgery will depend on your
medical history and the complexity of the surgery. Minor procedures are typically done on an outpatient basis. However, more extensive surgeries may necessitate a hospital stay for monitoring/recovery.
Q: What is your education and training background? Early on in medical school, I became involved in plastic surgery research. After completing a breast reconstruction research appointment at MD Anderson, I completed a 6-year integrated plastic surgery residency at Baylor Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. As the only Level I trauma center between Dallas and Austin, I had broad exposure to all aspects of plastic surgery—hand, breast, craniofacial, general reconstruction, microsurgical, and aesthetic surgery. I went on to complete an additional 1-year aesthetic fellowship at the highly sought-after Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute. This additional year of expert training was spent focusing on all aspects of surgical and non-surgical aesthetics.
Q: Do you offer financing? We believe financial limitations should not inhibit the choice to improve your appearance. To make it convenient and stress-free, we offer financing options—Patient Fi, Care Credit, Prosper Healthcare Lending, Alphaeon Credit. In addition, the Southlake Plastic Surgery Rewards Program provides savings, limited time offers, and monthly specials.

In January 2007, Rick Baker formed Stately Design & Renovation and has completed around 700 projects to date. Today, Stately Design & Renovation is a boutique renovation company whose niche is ground-up additions, large scale renovations and second story add-ons. They’re helping North Texas to “renew the love for the place you call home” by renovating luxurious spaces.
AND RENOVATION
Rick and his high school sweetheart, Janet, have been married over 30 years. They’ve built a home and raised a son and a daughter together. They know the importance of the communities we love and the places we call home. The Stately Design & Renovation team members they fondly call ’work family’ have impressed clients with creativity, professionalism, attention to detail and communication. They hope to partner with you on your next project!
Q: What do you specialize in? Stately Design & Renovation has completed over 700 remodeling projects to date and as the company has evolved, we have grown from doing bathrooms and kitchens to large scale full house renovations, ground-up additions, and second story add-ons. We have found the most success when we are able to partner with our client walking through the whole project—from design to construction. This ensures that we’re able to collaborate and solve any problems that might arise before we get too far along.
Q: How long have you been in business? I started Stately Design & Renovation in 2007, after years of experience in real estate, home décor, and owning/remodeling rent houses. My team impresses clients with exceptional creativity, professionalism, attention to detail and communication skills. We aim to exceed client expectations and take a team approach. The business has grown from just me to now completing the team are Vice President Darrelyn Poage, Production Manager Justin Lindemulder, Project Coordinator Tori Jacobs, and Project Manager Adam Lowe.
Q: What defines your company success? Character matters. Honesty matters. Integrity matters. Therefore, we spend a lot of time sharing our process with you, what you can expect from us and what we expect from you. We have often been described by our clients as dependable, honest, trustworthy, punctual, professional, communicative, collaborative, and creative. We really listen to you and then bring your ideas and concepts to life. Our team takes great pride in offering exceptional workmanship and attention to detail. We provide value without taking hidden shortcuts, and our vast years of experience mean we have the knowledge and expertise to be the company you think we are!
Q: Should I invest in a home remodel or buy a new house? We are seeing home prices remaining high and chances are new interest rates are higher than your current mortgage rates. It is making more sense for people to stay in their homes. However, this is a personal decision, and we advise you to ask yourself a few questions: Do you feel a connection to your community and neighborhood? Maybe your family is close by, or you have lots of friends in the area? It makes economic sense to take advantage of all the things you love about your home and remodel. Even if you plan on selling your home down the road—chances are that not remodeling your space generally attracts lower offers and a lot of sellers feel pressured to make updates before selling to get a better price or attract more buyers. We believe that you should renovate for you! Renovations can be a very rewarding process and we’d love to create a plan to renew your love for the place you call home!
Q: What green options are you installing now? Solar power is the most common and since the laws have change in Texas, HOAs can't prohibit homeowners from installing solar panels on their homes now. Solar shingles are also a new, cleaner look over panels. We're also using SPAN smart electrical panels that when paired with an energy storage system offer whole-home backup with prioritized circuits during
power outages, actionable energy insights, and circuit-level control via WiFi using a smartphone app.
Q: What can I expect during renovation? A home remodel is a significant investment in what may be your largest asset. During renovation projects you can expect dust, noise, and strangers in your house. They take a lot of time and there are a lot of moving pieces—definitely have patience during the process! Homeowners quite commonly experience some frustrations during the middle of construction after the excitement of demo day has worn off—and you cannot quite see the finished project just yet. But trust us, it is all worth it when you experience your completed vision!
Q: What should I look for when choosing a remodeling company? Trust between you and the remodeler is a must for a successful relationship Also important is feeling comfortable working with them. Look for someone who will be your partner versus dictating what you should and shouldn’t do. Always ask for references from previous clients and actually contact them. Reviewing photos of past projects is also helpful. Stately Design & Renovation is one of the most trusted premier home remodelers in North Texas. We would be happy to discuss with you further what sets Stately Design apart. Let’s talk!
I said so
In this issue of Society Life’s Mom’s column, we asked local Stitch Fix stylist Gina Mitzel to answer 20 questions about her experiences both in becoming and being a mom. Gina has two children: Sadie is 11 years old and Brayden is 8. Gina lives with her husband, Brock and their kids in Trophy Club. Here’s what she had to say…
SOCIETY LIFE: What’s one of your earliest memories you have of your Mom? GINA MITZEL: When my mom and my aunt took me to my first concert, The Beach Boys!
SL: What is something you thought about Motherhood that was totally wrong? GM: We raise our kids to be who they are and not try to change them. But I remember thinking when they were little that we weren’t going to be the “sport” parents whose lives revolve around sports! Boy was I wrong! But I’m glad I was wrong. They’re doing what they love, getting exercise, learning new skills, and learning how to be part of a team. And most importantly, having fun!
SL: What’s something you wanted to do but didn’t... and why didn’t you? GM: I want to volunteer. It’s taken years to get to the point in my life that I have my own time while the kids are at school. While I workpart time, my schedule is flexible, so I make time for things important to me. I also think volunteering will be great for my mental health as it feels so good to do something for someone else.
SL: Was there something you swore you’d never do as a parent? GM: I will never try to change them. I want them to be confident and happy with who they are.
SL: What did you think you wanted to be when you grew up? GM: I always said I wanted to be a lawyer because I argued so much with my brother and considered myself quite successful doing so!
SL: How have your notions of what it means to be a Mom changed over your lifetime? GM: When they were babies, my goal was to keep them healthy. When they were toddlers—learn how to be sociable, play with others, and know right from wrong. As they grow in elementary school, you teach them respect, how to be a good listener, and how to be a good friend and overall human. We’re at the point with Sadie, as she’ll be entering middle school, in which more serious conversations about life are naturally emerging. We’re very open and honest with the kids and these conversations have become an important part of our lives.
SL: What’s the best family vacation you’ve ever taken? GM: I grew up travel-
ing to Florida throughout my childhood and am so happy that we’ve been able to do the same for our kids. Sanibel Island is our favorite spot in Florida. We have been fortunate to travel with grandma/grandpa and my brother and his family. My brother lives in Chicago so the kids have very little opportunity to spend much time with their cousins. Last summer the whole family met there and vacationing with their cousins was the best vacation.
SL: Is there a moment or event that radically changed the way you saw Motherhood? GM: We are grateful to not have any major tragic life events that I would think of when answering this question. However, my role as a parent changed when Sadie was diagnosed with dyslexia and Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD). While we had incredible resources and support at her school, I had to step in and become her advocate by not hesitating to ask questions and by keeping the communication line open with staff. We are our children’s greatest advocate and it is important to take responsibility for that.
SL: When did you know you were ready to have kids? GM: We always knew we wanted kids. We were married for a couple of years and settled in our first home in Keller and it just felt like it was time. We had always said we wanted two kids and were thrilled to have both a girl and a boy!
SL: What’s your favorite photo of your family or kids? GM: Our kids are so photogenic that we have so many amazing photos that it’s too hard to just pick one! But my very favorite photos are the candid photos we take with our photographer. She always says something funny to make us laugh and they just radiate happiness.
SL: What was the first year of motherhood like for you? GM: Sadie was a happy, easy baby so that significantly helped with the transition. I went back to work when she was two months old, so I had to learn how to balance home and work life. Brock and I had to coordinate carpooling for day care, I learned how to use a crock pot, and had to prioritize the little time we had together in the evenings.
SL: What do you want or wish most for your kids? GM: I want them to be happy, healthy, and successful in whatever direction life takes them.
Momilies
SL: What are some of your biggest struggles as a Mom? GM: Mom guilt! It’s so easy to compare yourself to other moms and I’ve learned you have to be confident in how you raise your kids and the decisions you make. It’s easy to forget that sometimes!
SL: What would your perfect day off be like? Describe it. GM: Our family’s happy place is the beach. I would start my day with a workout because that is my favorite way to start any day. We would spend our day bouncing back and forth between the pool and the beach and we would end the day with a delicious seafood dinner and a cocktail for mom and dad and ice cream for kids! I’d also selfishly hope I could get some reading time in on the beach!
SL: What’s the one song that means the most to you? GM: I love music but when I have my ear buds in or I’m in the car, I’m listening to a book! So I’m going to modify this question a bit. My favorite book is The Great Alone from my favorite author Kristen Hannah. The main character of all her books are strong, independent females and her stories never close with a fairy tale ending. I appreciate that because that’s real life. There are bumps in the road and while good things happen along the way, it often takes a lot of work to get there! Her stories demonstrate strength and determination and I would only hope that those would be characteristic that would also describe me.
SL: What advice would you give to your younger self about Motherhood? GM: Don’t get too comfortable in each phase, they are always changing! Learn to pivot.
SL: Is there a quote, saying, words of advice or scripture you consider words to live by? GM: “Take care of yourself as if you are the most awesome person you have ever met.” – Jen Sincero. I am a huge proponent of self-care so I can be physically and mentally there for my kids.
SL: If you could share a meal with any woman past, present or future who would it be? Why? GM: Reese Witherspoon. She’s a creative genius! I love how she values female authors and I’ve been loving her book to TV/movie adaptations.
SL: What Mom from real-life or even TV/movies do you admire most? GM: Lorelai Gilmore. She is a single mom who does it all. I respect the way she raised Rory and I can only hope Sadie and I will have the same open communication and close relationship.
SL: At the end of a long day, what do you do for fun or relaxation? GM: Read!
Trifecta
HIS PERSPECTIVE: STORIES FROM FATHERHOOD | BY JON SALINSKYThe first-place horse was named Colonoscopy. It was dark and mysterious. According to my wife, the horse was a sure winner. It was a sure winner in terms of awkwardness. Thanks to recently updated healthcare guidance, the recommended age for colorectal screening has been greatly reduced. As a result, I was between the rock of a logistically risky do it yourself colon-health-mail-away-home-kit and the hard place of a colonoscopy. While the cartoon character promoting the DIY kit was fun-loving and cuddly, I couldn’t risk an errant return to sender situation. Our dog and her affinity for our neighbors’ yards had already earned us an unflattering reputation in the neighborhood, so I placed my bet on Colonoscopy.
I can’t consider it a memorable experience. I only remember the pre-procedure and post-procedure. Pre-procedure, in a semi-meditative state, I watched a fellow patient escape the confines of his curtained cell. With one hand, he clenched the back of his hospital gown as he scurried toward the bathroom. With his other hand, he turned backwards the Houston Astros ballcap that he wore upon his head. I understood the clench. It probably served a dual purpose. Given his impending procedure, I understood his choice of ballcap. I didn’t understand why he turned it backwards. Even though a backward facing ballcap is a cool look, despite public service announcements, colonoscopies are not that cool. They are especially not cool enough to warrant a backwards facing ballcap.
Maybe this pantless pixie was the type to forgo anesthesia. I, for one, was not. Not long after I finished the character analysis of the character, I woke up in post-procedure recovery. Two nurses and a doctor were smiling at me. At least they weren’t laughing or wearing backwards-facing Astros hats. Better yet, at least I didn’t remember why they would be. Then they presented me with the photos.
The second-place horse was off-white and chippy. His name was Root Canal. Soon after we left the surgical center for
Colorectal Health & Embarrassment, I began to crawl out of my anesthesia induced fog and hunger set in. In about 36 minutes, I made up for nearly 36 hours without solid food. During the gorge session, I experienced acute tooth pain. I contorted my mouth like Mick Jagger and noticed the gum around my back molar was inflamed. I chalked it up to an unexplained side effect of the colonoscopy. When the pain did not subside, my 11-year-old daughter, Revi, referred me to the dentist. The dentist rooted Root Canal across the finish line. In celebration he performed a ceremony befit for an ancient civilization upon my tooth. He then had the audacity to invite me back for a dental cap. In a stroke of ironic misfortune, my insurance pre-claim for the cap was denied, because the root-canal caused our annual insurance payout to reach its dental cap.
The third-place horse was dirty-yellow and disfigured. His name was Corn. Partly afraid of the dentist and partly afraid of our dental insurance, I ran out of the dentist’s office. I didn’t run very far on account of a needling and burning sensation on my foot. This time I didn’t trust my daughter with the diagnosis. Instead, I trusted Google. With the help of Google, Corn showed itself across the finish line. There are fewer things more descriptively gross than a skin condition described in terms of a vegetable.
As I zoomed-in to get a better look at corn photos from across the globe, a pop-up advertisement appeared for padded medicated adhesive O-rings. I bought the pads. Then something magical happened. The corn gradually became less painful.
With the trifecta won, I sought my winnings. Because of the dentist there was no cash available to collect. Though I did have an unused package of padded medicated adhesive O-rings which I have since repurposed. My nipples no longer chafe when I run in cold weather.
Fifty was supposed to be my peak age. If I live to 100, it’s the age where I would be as close to life as to death. It’s also when I expected medical procedures would begin in mass. I was wrong. It was 49. If medical procedures were a horserace, I would have won the trifecta.

THE TRIBUTE TO VALOR FOUNDATION CHALLENGES EVERY STUDENT TO ANSWER THE QUESTION WHO AM I? BY USING 6 CORE VALUES OF THE MEDAL OF HONOR AS A ROAD MAP. WHO AM I? DECALS ARE GIVEN TO EACH STUDENT WITH A CALL TO ACTION FOR THEM TO PLACE THE DECAL WHERE THEY WILL BE REMINDED DAILY OF THE SIX CORE VALUES.
WHO AM I?
The Tribute to Valor Foundation was founded in 2018 as an all-volunteer organization focused on influencing, impacting and inspiring the students involved in STEAM curriculum. Their goal is to help these students understand and engage the values of the Medal of Honor—Courage, Sacrifice, Patriotism, Citizenship, Integrity and Commitment. They also provide students with the opportunities to meet and learn from wounded, ill, or injured service members, and understand the importance of STEAM and how new
technologies have been critical to improving their quality of life and that of their families. Engaging young people with these veterans gives the students a unique perspective of the positive impact STEAM can make in the lives of others. They accomplish their goals by working with school districts and bringing Medal of Honor Recipients—those who have earned our nation’s highest award for valor in combat—to engage with the students through assemblies, workshops, presentations and unique immersive experiences. As of April 2023, there were
only 65 living Recipients of the Medal of Honor—true national treasures that are committed to “paying it forward” by instilling in young people the responsibilities of being Americans, and to demonstrate those special values of character.
PROGRAMS AND EVENTS
Their intent is to inspire students to view STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) through a unique lens, and help them to take a critical look at STEAM as a path to pursue. Working with educators and administra-

They strive to help them learn about those opportunities, and the indelible and positive impact STEAM can have on the lives of themselves and others. Technologies such as the iBOT mobility system, the Trax Chair and the Exsoskeleton have been vital to enhancing mobility and independence for many disabled men and women, including many of our nation’s veterans.
ESSENTIAL HEROES YELLOW RIBBON SCHOLARSHIP
The Tribute to Valor Foundation has always honored those who embody the six core values of the Medal of Honor, and who live a life dedicated to the service of others. The recent events surrounding the pandemic brought to the forefront the sacrifice of all healthcare, first responders and essential service workers. The Tribute to Valor Essential Heroes Yellow Ribbon Scholarship is dedicated to the brave men and women that have always served their communities, and put themselves at risk for the benefit of all. The pandemic caused more casualties than combat operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam or Korea. Tribute to Valor Essential Heroes Yellow Ribbon Scholarship helps surviving spouses and children of fallen essential heroes to move forward with education, support with tutoring, vocational training, certification and college opportunities. These scholarships will also be presented to deserving students who are pursuing opportunities in the healthcare and first-responder professions.

TESTIMONIAL
“What an awesome experience for the students and myself! So inspiring to hear their stories. I think this is especially helpful for 6th grade middle school students as I see a few starting to go down the wrong path. It is such a huge transition from elementary school to middle school and the students need all the guidance they can get. My son was super impressed and cannot stop talking about it. My students have been talking about courage, bravery, opportunities and integrity. Warms my heart to hear my 6th graders discussing this with their peers and myself!” – Tara

SPICED HONEY GOAT CHEESELog
Entertaining season is just around the corner and we will be looking for an easy, delicious appetizer to impress our guests or hostess. This is it! This takes only mere minutes to make and tastes so fancy. It’s creamy, crunchy, sweet and spicy— all at the same time! I’ve rolled a delicious goat cheese log in finely chopped pistachios and finished it with spicy honey. You could just warm some honey and drizzle it on top, but it’s so good with a bit of cayenne. You can spice it to your liking. I originally came up with this because it’s too hot outside to cook dinner—let alone appetizers. And after I tried it, I realized just how perfect this would be as a holiday appetizer. I am definitely making this again at a holiday party!
INGREDIENTS FOR ONE LOG:
8 oz goat cheese
1/4 cup pistachios, finely chopped 1 Tbsp honey
1/8-1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
(1) Roll goat cheese in chopped pistachios, thoroughly coating.
(1) In your smallest sauce space, warm a generous tablespoon of honey with cayenne pepper. Whisk until combined and slightly warm, then pour over log. Serve with crackers and enjoy!

Crave Kitchens, a food delivery service that offers customers the unique ability to mix and match dishes from different restaurant concepts in one order, just launched a location in Southlake in July. The online platform and mobile app make it easy and convenient for Keller, Southlake, Colleyville and Grapevine residents to access a wide variety of high-quality, delicious cuisine from a variety of restaurants—all from the comfort of their couch. Crave Kitchens’ concept allows customers to mix and match their favorite dishes so everybody gets what they want. A driver picks it all up and delivers it to your door—all in one fell swoop.
Crave Kitchens partners with top quality restaurants to provide you with an array of delicious options, including Asian fusion, classic American, Italian and Mexican. It’s five restaurants all in one place. Big Red’s Burger & Grill features unique burger selections like a Breakfast Burger with an over easy egg, bacon and a garlic aioli. Already locals are loving The Diablo. This spicy creation features grilled jalapeños, ghost pepper jack and chipotle cayenne aioli. It pairs perfectly with the Sweet Potato Fries for a sweet and spicy punch.
Red Crane offers a variety of classic Asian cuisine with a modern twist. Popular dishes include the Red Thai Curry and Fried Rice. My not-to-bemissed from this concept is the General Tso’s Chicken. The chicken is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and oh-so-saucy with teriyaki glaze. The Vegetable Egg Rolls with sweet chili sauce are the perfect companion.
The Twisted Cactus features unique and vibrant Mexican cuisine. Choose from classic Mexican favorites such as burritos, and bowls, as well as distinctive dishes like the Twisted Cactus or Vegan Chorizo burritos to expand and satisfy your palate. Tacos are offered in Carne Asada, Shrimp, Chicken Tinga and Pork Carnitas. Pair it with Twisted Cactus Rice and Beans for a traditional Tex Mex feast.
The Flying Rooster specializes in bringing home-style comfort food straight to you. The menu features classic American dishes like burgers and salads, as well as some unique specialties like their signature chicken sandwich with Buffalo Butter. All their dishes are made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and are sure to
satisfy your soul food craving. For the ultimate game day meal, the Buffalo Chicken Wings with Fries and Tater Tots will bring the classic sports bar vibe right into your home. Brownstone Pizza offers a delicious variety of freshly made pizzas and more.
Whether you’re looking for a classic cheese pizza or something more adventurous, Brownstone Pizza satisfies every taste bud. From this concept, I’m loving their one-of-kind Smoky Carnita Pizza and Hot Honey Pepperoni. Complete the Italian feel with Garlic Knots, Mozzerella Sticks or Meatballs. Crave Kitchens also offers dessert. They’ve narrowed it down to two options that everyone loves. The New York Cheesecake with raspberry swirl can go toe-to-toe with Junior’s Cheesecake in Grand Central Station. They also offer a Chocolate Cake that can nip the strongest late night cocoa craving in the bud.
“At Crave Kitchens, we believe food is more than just sustenance—it’s an experience,” says Crave Kitchens coowner Danny Weisman. “We’re thrilled to bring our innovative food delivery service to Tarrant County and provide customers with an entirely new way to enjoy their favorite foods. We’re confident our platform will change the way people think about food delivery and we can’t wait to see what delicious combinations our customers come up with.”
Whether it’s a romantic dinner for two, a family meal, catering for a corporate lunch, or friends gathering for a night in, Crave Kitchens has something for everyone. Visit the website or download their app to browse menus, select dishes from different restaurant concepts, then place your order. Multiple brands, one order, delivered right to your door... now that’s crave-worthy!
