Our diverse Cocurricular Activities offers all students the opportunity to participate in various activities. We encourage our students to participate as it enriches classroom learning, fosters positive relationships, and strengthens their belonging and engagement in our community.

The Cocurricular Activities are categorised into: Physical Activities, Heart and Mind Activities and Creative and Performing Arts Activities.

Cocurricular Activity Registration

Registration instructions for Term 1 will be provided via the Parent Portal/App Newsfeed to parents and carers. In activities that have a maximum number of students, registration will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Cost

Activity costs are per term and will be charged to school accounts.

All Term 1 Cocurricular activities will begin in Week 3.

Physical Activities

These activities promote physical well-being, health, and fitness, aiming to develop exercise, sports, and physical challenges, aiming to develop students’ physical skills, teamwork, coordination, and overall fitness.

Students meet at the school to run for 30-45 minutes, typically covering distances ranging from 3 to 5 kilometres. Students may run in small groups according to personal pace and preference.

A light breakfast is provided after the run at the school. Appropriate running attire is required (i.e. running shoes, weather appropriate clothing).

Students represent SMGS in the local Jindabyne Netball Association competition which is held on Tuesday nights in Terms 4 and 1 at Jindabyne Sport and Recreation. The teams will also participate in training at school one lunch time per week to develop netball skills and tactics.

For those students interested, umpiring opportunities are also available.

Students must register with Jindabyne Netball Association and Netball NSW. PE uniform is required.

Students have the opportunity to form a team of up to 12 and compete on Monday evenings against other local teams in a Summer Soccer mixed competition that is based around fun.

Games start from 6:00 pm.

Collaborating with local run coach, Pablo Urena from Jindy Runners/Chase Running Co., our students will utilise the oval for running conditioning sessions in preparation for the school carnival and upcoming regional competitions. And regional competitions. These sessions will encompass warm-up drills, structured workouts, and cool-down activities.

Appropriate running attire is required (i.e. running shoes, weather appropriate clothing, sun hat, water bottle).

Junior MTB (Beginner) Rider’s Club will be facilitated by MTB Academy staff and support staff to cater for students with varying ability and fitness levels. During the sessions, the primary focus is enhancing students’ bike handling skills, developing confidence, riding safety, and fostering a love of riding bikes through a gamesbased approach. But, most importantly, we are going to just ride bikes and have FUN!

Pre-requisite skills: No bikes with training wheels. Students must be able to take off and stop on their own.

Students are asked to bring: Mountain Bike in good working order, helmet and long sleeve jersey are compulsory safety equipment. It is also recommended students wear a small (with1L water) hydration bladder, a spare snack/muesli bar and full fingered MTB gloves. SMGS MTB jersey is not mandatory, but available from our uniform shop.

Heart and Mind Activities

Heart and Mind Activities focus on the holistic development of students by engaging their emotional and intellectual selves. These activities encourage awareness of self and others incorporating emotional intelligence, critical thinking, mindfulness and service learning.

Students go to Warhammer Club to engage in model building, painting and table-top gaming activities. Participants have the option to bring their own models or work on club-provided models. These models are then assembled into armies, and exciting battles are staged, allowing students to test their strategies and enjoy friendly competition.

Students may bring their own Warhammer models, rules, dice and ruler. Models, paints and other equipment are available for new members.

Robotics education is a brilliant gateway that prepares individuals for diverse and exciting careers in fields such as engineering, computer science, and project management. In this hands-on, dynamic extracurricular, students have the opportunity to design, construct, and experiment with robots, leading to participation in the VEX IQ competition. With the next season of gaming commencing in May, it’s crucial for students to begin forming teams and dedicating time to practice both building and competing. This year, SMGS is proud to host the Southern NSW competition, presenting a fantastic opportunity for participants to showcase their skills and potentially progress to the national level.

Aperture (the SMGS Astronomy Club) is for students who have an interest in Astronomy. The club is called Aperture because it is the opening through which we view the cosmos. We aim to foster a shared passion for astronomy, exploring the night sky through guided observations, discussions and general astronomical events. Aperture meets every month on school grounds around the New Moon when the sky is dark and better for observations. The Agriculture Club activities encompass the following elements.

Chickens

• Caring for chickens.

• Cleaning and maintaining the chicken shed/house.

• Collecting eggs and organizing feed and water.

• Potential focus on learning how to clean and prepare birds for shows, depending on interest.

Sheep

• Learning how to handle and care for sheep.

• Cleaning and preparing sheep for shows,

• Possible exploration of haltering and leading sheep for show participation, based on student interest.

Gardening

• Preparing and planting gardens for spring/summer crops and flowers.

• Tasks include composting, bed netting, constructing frames, setting up irrigation systems, plant propagation, seedling growth and transplantation, and preparing plants for show or produce entry.

Cattle

• Pending confirmation of arrival, activities related to cattle, feeding, watering, grooming, washing, show leading and stance.

Students are required to wear closed shoes, pants and long sleeve shirt and hat. Bring gardening gloves if you can please.

The Mock Trial is a competition run by the Law Society of NSW and is offered as a co-curricular activity at SMGS for students in years 10 and 11. The competition aims to introduce students to the NSW judicial system and involves students taking part in a simulated criminal or civil court case. There are a variety of roles that students can undertake including barrister, solicitor, witness, court officer and magistrates clerk. The trials often take place in local court houses, schools or online and they provide a wonderful experience for students who are interested in the law. The Mock Trial competition develops advocacy, debating and problem-solving skills and necessitates students working closely as a team.

Writing Rulz @ SMGS is a dynamic and engaging cocurricular activity designed to inspire and motivate Stage 2 students to develop their writing skills and reach their full potential. This program focuses on teaching the structure and techniques of narrative and persuasive writing, equipping students with the tools they need to express their ideas effectively and creatively.

Goals:

• To develop confidence and proficiency in narrative and persuasive writing.

• To improve understanding of writing structures, grammar, and language techniques.

• To foster a love of storytelling and creative expression.

• To celebrate students’ achievements by publishing their work for an audience.

Structure:

Each session will run twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:10 am to 8:35 am, providing students with focused, interactive lessons that include:

1. Fun and practical instruction on the fundamentals of narrative and persuasive writing.

2. Guided writing practice with individual feedback to help students improve.

3. Collaborative activities to share ideas and build confidence.

Publishing Days:

At the end of each term, parents, carers, and friends are invited to celebrate the students’ progress during a special Publishing Afternoon event. Held on the second last Friday of each term, after school, these events showcase the students’ hard work as their written pieces are shared and celebrated with the school community.

Students will:

• Gain confidence in writing for different purposes and audiences.

• Learn to plan, draft, edit, and publish their work.

• Receive encouragement and support to explore their creativity and refine their skills.

• Take pride in their accomplishments as their writing is shared with a real audience.

Calling all young artists! Art Club is the perfect place for students in Years 1 to 6 to explore their imagination, experiment with different materials, and bring their ideas to life. Each week, children will dive into fun and engaging art activities, from painting and drawing to sculpture and mixed media. Whether your child loves to sketch, splash colour, or craft something totally unique, Art Club is a space to create, express, and have a blast! Students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will attend a number of expeditions in wilderness environments to fulfil the Adventurous Journey component of their Award. These journeys are generally 4 days and 3 nights in length and are held at various locations and at different times throughout the year. Students will be sent an invitation to join an AJ as the date draws near. The first AJ will be held from 4/4/25 - 8/4/2025.

Students participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award have the opportunity to gain assistance with the administrative requirements for their Award program. This includes logging their hours on the Online Record Book, completing Adventurous Journey reports, seeking help with ideas of activities to participate in or asking questions about their participation in the Award program at SMGS. Students only need to attend this session as required.

The SMGS Equestrian Academy (EA) is a specialised program catering for beginner to advanced riders, boarding and day students, the program will provide increased opportunities for all riders to work towards their personal best and beyond in a number of equestrian disciplines. As part of the AE program, we are also pleased to offer boarding and day students the provision of agistment, located adjacent to the Jindabyne Pony Club.

The SMGS MTB Program runs for a full day on Wednesdays during Term 1, 2 and 4 as a specialist downhill and enduro development program, with qualified and experienced coaches from Thredbo and Jindy Riders.

Adult students in this class will learn how to introduce themselves in Japanese, learn to count, order in a Japanese restaurant, and learn phrases for going shopping. The lesson is delivered in an immersion style and students will also start to learn some of the Japanese written characters.
