March 9, 2025 — First Sunday of Lent
March 9, 2025 — First Sunday of Lent
BY JEREMY DENIEGA, MARY GASS, AND PAUL MOKOTOFF
From January 31 to February 2, the Grad/YP group held their annual retreat at Colombiere Retreat Center. About 45 graduate students and young professionals ventured out in some snowy weather to par cipate in a variety of faithbuilding ac vi es, including: Eucharis c Adora on, Reconcilia on, small group discussions, yoga (courtesy of Fr. Bobby), and plenty of fellowship. The theme of the retreat was “In Giving of Ourselves that We Receive,” inspired by the Prayer of St. Francis.
Throughout the weekend, Retreat Team members shared talks focusing on: 1) how to “learn to let go” of our worldly goals and desires; 2) surrendering to God and His will; 3) receiving the graces that God is providing us each day; and 4) tes monials of how God has worked (and is working) in our individual lives. These talks served as a gateway to insigh ul small group discussions. Retreatants shared deeper experiences about giving of themselves to God, fears of “le ng go”, and graces they’ve been blessed with.
One of our retreatants shared that: “I had the opportunity to let go of all distrac ons and bring my anxie es before God so He can transform them into something be er. I enjoyed talking with others about topics I o en self-reflect on but don’t talk about in normal everyday life, especially with those who don’t share my faith. Hearing others’ faith jour-
neys helped me realize that I’m not alone … and that God expresses His love and mercy in different ways.”
One of the coolest parts of the retreat was celebra ng Sunday Mass with many of the Jesuits that live at Colombiere. All of the Jesuits in the congrega on joined Fr. Bobby in the Consecra on of Christ’s Body and Blood. Hearing all of the Jesuits speak filled the chapel and caught the a en on of mul ple retreatants! A few of us men oned this a er Mass, realizing that there were over 500 years of combined Jesuit ministry among those celebra ng Mass with us.
Overall, the Grad/YP community had a refreshing and spiritually frui ul weekend! The a endees received many graces from the retreat to take back with them into their busy lives. The graces from the weekend are best captured by one retreatant’s reflec on: “Although the hardest part of the retreat was when it ended, I felt refreshed and mo vated to con nue growing closer to God. I’m blessed to have a ended this year’s retreat and thankful for all the connecons I made.”
May God con nue to bless our graduate students and young professionals with the graces they need to establish themselves in their careers and build a life rooted in Christ!
