June 1, 2025 — The Ascension of the Lord
June 8, 2025 — Pentecost Sunday
BY FR KYLE SHINSEKI, SJ
“Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” These are the words pronounced as we are anointed with the sacred chrism as we receive the sacrament of Confirmation. During this Easter season, 28 adults and 40 teens from our parish received this sacrament. Each year, this sacrament reminds us of the many gifts that the Holy Spirit pours out upon each of us, God’s beloved children. It was such a blessing for me to witness the joy and excitement so many of our fellow St. Mary Student Parish community members experienced as they received the fullness of the Holy Spirit through this sacrament, which finds its origins in the feast of Pentecost.
In the first reading for the feast of Pentecost from the Acts of the Apostles (2:1-11), we are told about a large crowd, “filled with the Holy Spirit [that] began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” Yet despite this plethora of languages, each person present heard them, “speaking in [their] own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” Since I was a young child, I have had a fascination with cultures and languages. One example of this is how I decided in grade school to make a list of how to say, “thank you,” in various languages, going as far as writing to embassies in Washington, DC, to create a list of more than 100 languages.
When I became Catholic as a junior in college, I began to discover the wealth of languages and cultures that form our global Catholic Church. I witnessed Aztec dancers paying homage to Our Lady of Guadalupe at a Spanish Mass, the moving Ifoga penitential rite at a Samoan Mass, and the beautiful exchange in the tonal language be-
tween the priest and the assembly at a Vietnamese Mass. These experiences helped me to appreciate how, “all human beings relate and respond to God and express this faith from and within their culture,” as explained in Principles of Inculturation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (USCCB, 1994).
Over the years, I have participated in Masses in a variety of languages and cultural contexts. Even though I do not speak or understand most of these languages, I always find myself enriched and my faith deepened by these experiences. The great diversity of gifts manifested by the many peoples and cultures who make up our Catholic Church is a reflection of the many unique gifts that the Holy Spirit has given to each one of us. As we celebrate Pentecost, I would invite you to reflect on what unique gifts God has given you and to consider how God might be calling you to use those gifts for the greater glory of God and the good of God’s people.
In his homily for his Inauguration Mass, Pope Leo XIV called us to be, “a united Church, a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world.” He emphasized that such unity, “does not cancel out differences but values the personal history of each person.” In other words, this unity comes precisely by honoring and valuing the unique gifts the Holy Spirit has given to each of us. The Holy Father invites us to use these gifts to, “offer God’s love to everyone,” by following, “the missionary spirit that must animate us; not closing ourselves off in our small groups, nor feeling superior to the world,” but by being a church that, “opens its arms to the world.” May the Holy Spirit lead us forward as a united church to witness to God’s love.
