STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

XITA CORPUS

Los Viejos de Corpus, or "Xita Corpus" in the Otomi language, was founded in 1912 in Temascalcingo, in the state of Mexico. Corpus Chris is the biggest fes val in the world because the body and the blood of Christ is celebrated, which is why it is called Corpus Chris , and it is celebrated a er Pentecost in the month of June.

They say that our ancestors had a drought where it did not rain, and there was famine due to the lack of rain. So, some men began to think, what do we do? God is punishing us! That's what went through their heads. But they went to the church and began to pray at the feet of the Lord, using these masks to cover the shame of their sin, and with their dance and prayer they cried out to God. God listened to them and sent the rain and abundant harvests. Their clothes and shoes represent their long, exhaus ng journey. This is a great lesson for each new genera on, but it is also a sign of love, respect, and charity for our elders and ancestors. Since then we have followed this tradion ll this day.

The Bull represents the strength with which the evil that comes through sin is defeated. This also represents Faith, and when the old man dies, evil disappears.

The Masks represent covering one's face in the presence of God because of all one's sins.

The design of the suits represents their long journey and what they used during those mes .

From the Gospel of John 6:48, 51:

I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert but died. Here is the bread that comes down from heaven So that they eat it and no longer die .

Join us on Sunday, June 22 at 2 PM. There will be a procession of the Corpus Chris at the end of the Mass. We will also have a deanery procession at 7 PM (see flyer on the right)

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Over the past year, St. Mary has been engaged in a combined capital campaign to invest in Catholic educa on and in the future our parish. As of June 2, 2025, we have raised $4,064,477.59 in pledges from 443 individuals and households from our parish. Your generosity reflects the love and commitment you have for our community and your desire to ensure that St. Mary may connue to be a beacon of light and a wellspring of hope for generaons to come.

I am incredibly thankful for Dr. Kim Eagle, who served as honorary chair; Connie and Tom Kinnear and Mike O’Donnell, who served as co-chairs; and the many parishioners who served as cabinet members, and ambassadors. As they conclude their service, I would like to gratefully acknowledge the hard work of these dedicated volunteers. We could not have seen such great success with our campaign without each of you!

Please know that we are diligently working to ensure that we are good stewards of the funds that you have entrusted to us. We have formed two subcommi ees for Facili es and Development, which will help us, along with the Church Enhancement Commi ee, to be prudent in how we allocate and spend the funds that we receive. As we make progress on various projects, we will keep you updated through the parish bulle n.

SAVE THE DATE for a special gathering on Thursday, July 31, 2025, the feast of Saint Igna us Loyola, when we will come together to celebrate the success of our campaign. Thank you!

Fr. Jim Kennedy, SJ was ordained Saturday, June 14th . He graduated from UM in 2013 and served as a catechist at St. Mary, where he first met the Jesuits.

Jim taught at Creighton Prep in Omaha, Nebraska, and Marque e University High School in Milwaukee. He also served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in the Bronx while studying at Fordham University. He just completed a master of divinity degree at Regis College in Toronto. A er ordina on, Jim will serve on the faculty at Marque e University High School. Here is a quote that he shared with us for our voca ons project:

“I love being a Jesuit because, as a Jesuit, I can serve God's People out of gra tude for all that I have received, including what I received at St. Mary's Student Parish. Being a Jesuit gives me the opportunity as a sinner loved mercifully by God to give my me, care, and a en on to that which is worthy of love: the wonderful world God has given us for our common home and the various people God has called forth to be his own, especially those Christ has put in our lives as the dear neighbor. Jesus invites me to be his companion and, in return, I try to him with all my heart, all my soul, and all my strength. There is no greater adventure than that!’
