May 25. 2025- — Sixth Sunday of Easter
When was the last me you were really excited about something or someone? Perhaps it was when you met your grandbaby for the first me or when your college-aged child came home for the first me a er being away at school, or maybe it was when you heard that the first United States-born pope was chosen. I’m sure we all have a different answer. Think about encountering Jesus in the Sacraments, does that excite you? God hopes so. He loves us so much that He provides grace to bring us closer to Himand grace for us to bring Him to our neighbor. He does this all through the great gi of His Sacraments. Please see a few of our Sacramental Prep coordinators’ reflec ons below.
Reflec on by Family Ministry Coordinator – Karen Foster
As the Family Ministry coordinator at St. Mary Student Parish, I have had the responsibility and great privilege of journeying with the Family Faith second-grade children who were preparing for receiving their First Reconcilia on and First Holy Communion. The children first focused on the Sacrament of Reconcilia on where they learned that we are all sinners and that some mes we“miss the mark” but that Jesus is always there for us in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. They experienced how wonderful it is to repent and have their sins forgiven.
The children then learned about the Sacrament of the Eucharist. They learned about the Mass and the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, and they were taught what a special gi receiving Jesus in the Eucharist is. The First Holy Communion Mass was held on April 26, 2025 this year and the children were very excited and happy and some were even a bit nervous. I’m sure their nervousness came from wan ng to do everything just right, which they all did! They received Jesus in a beau ful Mass and it was a joyful day.
I was also able to witness the air of excitement among the teen Confirma on candidates as the Holy Spirit descended upon them at the Teen Confirma on Mass on May 1, 2025. What really inspired me and touched my heart though, was when one of the second graders, who had received his First Holy Communion just five days earlier, received Holy Communion for only the second me at the Confirma on Mass. The li le guy was so reverent while receiving Communion from Fr. Dan and a erward he locked eyes with me. I have never seen anyone so happy, excited, and proud to receive Jesus in the Eucharist than that li le boy. I think he truly encountered Jesus and I believe this is what Jesus wants for all of us. We are seeking God in our lives and it is through the Sacraments that He is there for us and where we can find Him.
Reflec on by Hispanic /La no Sacramental Prepara on Coordinator – Maribel Rosas
On Saturday, April 26, during a beau ful celebra on presided over by our Pastor, Father Kyle Shinseki SJ, 10 children and 5teenagers from the Hispanic/La no community received their First Communion, accompanied by their family and friends, who came from other states and even other countries and con nents to share with them this special encounter with God, indeed a moment filled with love and glory.
This year has certainly not been easy for our community, as it has been full of challenges, really difficult and sad moments for some of our families. However, seeing the faces of these children and adolescents radiant with joy and excitement as they were walking to receive our Lord, to find him while receiving for the first me the Holy Eucharist, my heart filled with joy, faith and hope for a be er me. I was moved to tears thinking of all the challenges that our families had to face to a end our sessions, overcoming fear is not easy but knowing that God is with us kept us going.
I am deeply grateful to the team of catechists who donated their me and energy on many a ernoons despite their jobs and schoolwork, to the parents, and especially to two “abuelitas” (grandmothers), who, despite the storms they faced, made sure their grandchildren did not miss classes nor miss receiving the Sacrament. They are undoubtedly an example of strength and faith for me and inspire and mo vate me to con nue this mission.
May God let us con nue to nurture this seed of faith planted in our youth and always pray for them so that God our Lord may make it grow and remain forever in their hearts.
Special thanks to Noah Smith, the Jesuit novice who supported us in this catechesis program, sharing and inspiring our youngpeople with his YES! to the Lord, to Fr. Dan Dixon who has mentored and guided our team, and to Karen Foster who is a great inspiraon to give the best to the families a ending our programs.
