CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
By Rosa Luz Beltran Pos go, Hispanic La no Ministry Coordinator
The experience of a migrant is always very difficult, no ma er how complicated the path was, whether one arrived on foot, by bus or by plane, the feelings are always the same. We leave behind the embrace of those who remain in our country of birth, family and friends, the home that sheltered us, the food, the smell of the earth, the blue sky.
Arriving in a country that is not ours, learning another language, other customs, another way of living, is always a struggle. Overcoming looks of contempt or strangeness, answering many mes those ques ons: why did you decide to come to America?, is never easy.
Our experience as migrants was no different from that of others. My husband and I, pharmacists by profession and with many years of work in Peru, saw the possibility of migra ng when the economic condi ons in our country became very difficult for our profession. That is why when the opportunity to revalidate the degree as a pharmacist came up thanks to a program sponsored by the Massachuse s College of Pharmacy and our university in Arequipa, Peru, we made the decision to leave. Given the condi ons, we had to separate and my husband came first to take the exams and I stayed in Peru taking care of our children, ages 10 and 12. A li le more than 2 years of painful separa on went by un l we all reunited in North Carolina. Those were very hard mes, which is why whenever I have the opportunity to advise someone who wants to migrate, I tell them, do not separate from your children, go all together, you will save yourself many tears.
However, God, with his infinite mercy, allowed us to reunite and embrace each other again as the family we always were.
For my husband and I, it was not an easy task to adapt to this country. At just over 40 years old and accustomed to a different work environment, we had to do everything to support our family, work in fast food restaurants, in the supermarket, and in my husband's case, study all night to pass all the exams and try to achieve the dream of giving our children a be er future. Once again, the hand of the Virgin Mary was there, allowing him to complete the exams and get his pharmacy license, and soon a er, we were able to move to Ann Arbor to start a new life. Despite s ll living the grief of having migrated and with all the difficul es overcome, we arrived again in another city
where we began new work and other obliga ons and opportuni es with our hearts full of dreams. And God sustained us at all mes as he sustains all his children, especially immigrants. Our faith was the only thing we always had that was certain, the only thing that made us overcome and forgive humilia ons and imper nent looks, cruel phrases and that feeling that o en made us ask ourselves: What am I doing here?
However, God had a plan for us, we remained faithful despite the difficul es and we looked for, as in all the places we were before, a parish that would shelter us and give us the immense gi of being able to pray in our own language and for the moment we were there, nourished by the body and blood of Jesus, feeling at home, speaking fluently and effortlessly and feeling the embrace and warmth of this new community.
And so we arrived at St Mary and God gave us a great and beau ful community and over the years we fulfilled dreams and achieved goals as a family. Our migrant hearts smile and are grateful for all the gi s we have received, grateful to God and grateful to this great na on. Thank you Lord!
“I was a stranger and you welcomed me into your home” Mt 25: 35
