STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

As we celebrate the Centennial Commemora on of the First Mass at St. Mary Student Parish, we would like to share a bit of its history with you.

A BRIEF SUMMARY OF ST MARY STUDENT PARISH HISTORY

In 1817, Catholic priest Father Gabriel Richard, was one of the founders of the University of Michigan (UM). When the University relocated from Detroit to Ann Arbor in 1837, St. Thomas the Apostle Church served the religious needs of the University’s Catholic students. The first Catholic student organiza on, the Foley Guild, was organized in 1888. By 1915, Bishop Edward D. Kelly of Detroit had assigned Father Micahel Bourke to establish a student congrega on.

In 1919, a temporary chapel for Catholic students was dedicated in a renovated building that had been the home of a UM professor on State Street in Ann Arbor. Then, in 1923, construc on began on a new student chapel for the explicit purpose of Catholic worship. On April 6, 1924, the cornerstone of St. Mary Student Chapel was laid, with the first Mass celebrated on Sunday, February 22, 1925, and the dedica on of the Chapel the following Sunday, March 1, 1925.

On August 1, 1940, St. Mary Student Parish was created with its territory being the UM campus, then home to some 1,200 Catholic students. A er World War II, student enrollment experienced unprecedented growth, as did St. Mary. So, a fundraising campaign for a student center with facilies for classes, conferences, reference materials, and recrea on was launched in 1950, with the cornerstone of the Father Gabriel Richard Newman Center laid on October 25, 1952.

By the 1960’s, growing numbers of graduate students with young families led to the development of religious educaon programs for children from preschool to high school. A er Va can II, a Chapel Council was formed in 1969, fostering greater lay involvement. Then, the 1970’s brought many changes, including the transfer of the parish to the Diocese of Lansing in 1972, the growth of social ac vism, and the emergence of the Word of God charisma c renewal community.

As UM grew with the establishment of the North Campus in the 1980’s and expansion of the UM Medical Campus, St. Mary con nued to serve an es mated 8,000 Catholic students. A renewed focus was placed on educa on and faith development, with the Graduate Discussion Group, Catholic Update courses, and seminars as primary parish ac vi es at the me. In the 1990’s, renova ons were made to increase accessibility as well as update and expand mee ng spaces.

At the dawn of the new millennium, St. Mary had its first Spanish Mass, then, in 2005, the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits, took on administra on of the parish, which introduced Igna an spirituality to St. Mary. Today, St. Mary Student Parish serves not only UM students, but faculty, staff, alumni, and those from the greater Ann Arbor area. Our community reflects a broad range of genera ons and cultures, united in Our Lord in the Eucharist and dedicated to pu ng our faith into ac on.
