STUDENT PARISH

CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

A TRANSCENDENT LENT

As we near the end of Lent, it seems like my impossibly busy schedule only gets busier: events to plan and run, millions of mee ngs, and the final weeks of walking in discipleship with our gradua ng students. This season has been one of immense and beau ful growth at our parish, especially in campus ministry. I feel honored to have been a part of it, but, as we finish out another academic year, day-to-day, most of the me, my head is spinning.

Perhaps this Lent has also been a busy or mentally-clu ered me for you, too. I always want to enter into Lent really well –to spend me with Jesus in the desert and grow spiritually. And some days it feels like I do. But most days I’m surviving, hurrying from one thing to the next and trying to simply “get it all done.” It’s easy to lose sight of the transcendent when there are mee ngs to a end and meals to make. However, I’ve come to realize that it’s in the midst of life’s busyness that Christ most wants to meet us, that He most wants to break through our clu ered vision and remind us to fix our gaze on Him.

I was gree ng at the 8pm mass last week, as I do each week. There was a massive storm that night, but we caught a brief window of reprieve in the 20 minutes before mass. It was warm enough to stand outside as students flooded in, and I got to witness an incredible sunset. The sky was an ombré e-dye of orange, yellow, pink, and purple. The previously darkened grey sky was cast into glorious light for those 20 minutes. Beforehand, I had been running around – at the peer minister mee ng, se ng up Sunday Snack, and making last-minute adjustments to the mass announcements. But as I greeted, God broke through my clouded tunnel vision (always focused on the next task) and reminded me of His glory. He knew I’d be there for those 20 minutes, so He painted the sky for me. He took my breath away so that I’d slow down for half a second and remember why I was there – for His glory, not simply for the comple on of tasks.

The sunset was the reorienta on that I needed that night to carry out the rest of my responsibili es with tranquility and joy. I find the transcendentals – truth, beauty, and goodness –are needed daily for me to keep my gaze properly fixed on the glory of God. The beauty of the natural world in par cular (especially in this beau ful, messy, wonderful season of Spring!) helps me reawaken myself to the goodness of God. I also experience this reawakening when wri ng poetry or sto-

ries (which are o en inspired by encounters I have with the beauty of crea on).

If you’d like to take an evening this Lent to refocus on the transcendentals, to remember and celebrate the truth, beauty, and goodness of God and His crea on, I invite you to join us at the second annual Transcendence launch party. Transcendence is a literary magazine I started last year to “find God in all things.” It’s a collec on of student and resident parishioners’ poetry, artwork, short stories, and other crea ve expressions that meditate on the transcendentals. It’s going to be an evening of slowing down and rejoicing in our ability to co-create with God. We’ll have live readings, free magazine copies, and some meatless (Friday during Lent) refreshments. It’s at 7pm in Donnelly Hall this Friday (April 11th) and all are welcome. If you aren’t able to make it, our website bburke431.wixsite.com/ transcendence/single-project will be updated a er the launch party with a digital copy of the latest edi on.

Lastly, thank you again for your support of campus ministry, especially through the March Match Madness campaign. Your support helps bring students into the truth, beauty, and goodness of God. Have a blessed rest of your Lenten season, and I hope to see you Friday!

Reading I Is 43:16-21

Psalm Ps 126:1-6

Reading II Phil 3:8-14

Gospel Jn 8:1-11

To the exiles in Babylon, Isaiah foretells a new exodus, when the Lord will lead his people from cap vity to freedom. True freedom is rooted in the person of Jesus, not in observance of the Law. It is he who challenges us to examine our own hearts before self-righteously judging others.

Reading I Is 50:4-7

Psalm Ps 22:8-9

Reading II Phil 2:6-11

Gospel Lk 22:14-23:56 or 23:1-49

Jesus, humbling himself out of love for us, did not shield his face from buffets and spi ng, but offered his life on the cross. He relied on his father’s love.
