April 27, 2025 — Second Sunday of Easter

April 27, 2025 — Second Sunday of Easter
BY DOROTA BEST, ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT AT ST MARY
Growing up in Poland, my parents wanted to make sure that I understood the meaning behind the Divine Mercy Sunday.
The message of Divine Mercy is that God is merciful, that He is Love, and that He wants all of us to turn to Him with trust and repentance while there is still time.
In the 1930s, Sr. Faustina Kowalska, a young Polish nun, had a vision of Jesus. He called her to be the secretary and apostle of His mercy. Jesus shared with Sr. Faustina the desires of His Heart explaining what He wants us to do to respond to His mercy and He promised specific graces to all who would honor and proclaim His mercy.
One of Jesus’ desires is to tell the world about His mercy. Jesus promised to defend throughout their lives those who proclaim His mercy.
Jesus desires for us to turn to Him with trust. To trust Jesus is to fully rely on Him knowing that He is God, and that He loves and cares for us. When we place complete trust in Jesus, we receive His mercy. When we pray “Jesus, I trust in You!” we call on the name of Jesus, and we acknowledge that He is our Savior and Lord. This short prayer summarizes the devotion to the Divine Mercy.
Jesus tells us, the sinners, to come to His infinite mercy, which is always available to us, no matter what we have done, even if we are filled with fears and anxiety. Jesus promised that He could never reject a repentant heart and never refuse an appeal to His mercy.
Jesus asks of us to be merciful to others through our actions, words, and prayers. We are to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, because even the strongest faith is of no use without works.
Jesus desires for us to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus told Sr. Faustina that He wishes to have the Divine Mercy Sunday established on the Sunday after Easter. Jesus promised that this would be a day of total forgiveness of sins for anyone who on this day go to Confession and receive the Holy Communion. On Divine Mercy Sunday, all sins and punishment are washed away in Jesus’ infinite mercy if we come to Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Jesus taught Sr. Faustina this prayer for mercy and told her to pray it “unceasingly.” We also are invited to pray this prayer known as The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Prayed on ordinary Rosary beads, the Chaplet is an intercessory prayer that extends the offering of the Eucharist. This prayer may be said at any
time, but it is especially appropriate to say the Chaplet around 3 o’clock (recalling the time of Christ’s death on the Cross). Jesus said to Sr. Faustina that for those who pray at the Hour of Great Mercy (three o’clock), He renewed His promise that whatever we ask in His name, He will do it.
Jesus desires for us to venerate His image. Jesus appeared to Sr. Faustina with rays of red and pale light coming from the area around His Heart. He asked Sr. Faustina to paint the vision she saw and to sign the painting with the words: “Jesus, I trust in You!”
On this Divine Mercy Sunday, let us remember Pope Francis’ words that “mercy is the Lord’s most powerful message,” and he hopes that we will “find a form of mercy for all,” because apart from the mercy of God there is no other source of hope for mankind.
Join us for Divine Mercy Sunday at 2:30 PM at St. Francis of Assisi.
