CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

ENTERING INTO HOLY WEEK

Each year we are invited to enter fully with our minds and hearts into the holiest week of the year for us as Catholics. Holy Week is not a spectator sport that can be called from the sidelines. Rather, for us to reap the abundant graces that God offers us in these sacred days, we must be more than bystanders. It can be easy for us to go through Holy Week as an audience member of sorts, with all the pageantry of each liturgy this week - from the waving of the palms on Palm Sunday to the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday, from the venera on of the cross on Good Friday to the candles lit amidst the darkness of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday.

Since I did not grow up Catholic, I recall the strangeness of each of these liturgies when I first experienced them as I began exploring the Catholic faith. They seemed almost theatrical, performances meant to impress and delight. However, over the years, as I grew in my understanding of our faith, I came to appreciate the depth of meaning behind these liturgies. Indeed, each liturgy of Holy Week is an invita on for us to enter into the mystery of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrec on, an invita on to not be a bystander but rather to walk with Our Lord from the darkness of sin and death into the healing and life-giving light of Christ.

We wave our palms on Palm Sunday to bear witness to our belief that Jesus is Our Lord and Savior. We wash each other’s feet on Holy Thursday to follow Christ’s example of self -sacrifice and humble service. We venerate the holy cross on Good Friday to honor the immense suffering that Jesus,

who was both fully divine and fully human, endured to free each of us from the weight of our sins. Then, we light the candles at the Easter Vigil as a sign of the hope that is born in our hearts through the Resurrec on of Christ from the dead, the hope that Christ has given to each of us for eternal life with God in heaven.

As we enter into this Holy Week, I invite you to take a moment to reflect on the meaning behind each of the liturgies we will celebrate together as a Saint Mary Student Parish community. I invite you to bring all that you are, your joys and hopes, your fears and frustra ons, to these Holy Week liturgies. We are, a er all, the body of Christ. When any part of the body of Christ suffers, we all suffer together. When any part of the body of Christ rejoices, we all rejoice. Let us then come together as one body to accompany Our Lord in these holy days, trus ng that if we suffer with Him, we will also rise with Him in the Resurrec on.

In this Jubilee Year of Hope, let us place our hope in the Risen Lord, who calls us to go out to be instruments of His mercy and His love in our world. Let us pray together as a St. Mary Student Parish community in the following words taken from the prayer for the Jubilee Year of Hope, “Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity enkindled in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your Kingdom.” Have a blessed Holy Week and joy-filled Easter!

St. Mary Student Parish is a welcoming, inclusive, caring, and diverse Catholic community, uniting residents and students.

We are Christ-centered with the Eucharist as the source of holiness in our vibrant liturgical life.

Inspired by Ignatian spirituality, we live a faith that does justice, reaching out to the marginalized.

As an apostolic parish, we are committed to ongoing formation of Christian witness, discipleship, and leadership.

CENTENNIAL CORNER: A HEARTFELT THANK YOU!

This week in our Centennial Corner, we are filled with gra tude for all who made it possible to carefully remove, preserve, and reimagine the me capsule at St. Mary. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of dedicated individuals and teams, we honored our history and prepared a gi for the next 100 years. We will have links to share in the upcoming month for those of you who missed the exhibits and ceremony. Thank you to those of you who joined us for the celebra on! It seems fi ng that about 100 parishioners were able to make it!

We offer our sincere thanks to the University of Michigan Digital Conversion Unit for their though ul support, and to Andrew Kyte, the skilled blacksmith behind Kyte Metal Werks. Learn more here: www.kytemetalwerks.com/about . Through Andrew’s remarkable precision, we resealed the original box and returned it to its place inside the cornerstone secured for the next century.

A special thank-you as well to the generous team at Grunwell Cashero, who donated their me and exper se to St. Mary Student Parish. Their restora on crew safely removed the original cornerstone and me capsule, and flawlessly reinstalled it all at no cost to the parish. We are especially grateful to Jelane Cashero Raycra , Sco
