A joint investigation involving the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Smiths Falls Fire Department has begun into a massive fire that caused extensive damage to a 21-unit apartment complex in Smiths Falls last Friday. Randy Normandin, Fire Prevention Officer with the Smiths Falls Fire Department who oversaw the Friday, April 28 operation at 8 Pearl St., said the cause of the blaze remains unknown at this time but noted the focus for several hours had been on extinguishing the flames and keeping them from spreading. He said Mutual Aid was activated soon after the initial calls came in around 11:30 a.m. Friday morning. In addition to the Smiths Falls department, firefighters from Montague, Perth, Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills, BBD&E and Beckwith were either on scene or on standby. The fire started on the third floor of the building and spread quickly across the roof of the multi-unit complex. Thick black smoke could be seen billowing from the top of the structure from the north side of the Rideau River and points beyond. Despite a strong northerly wind, quick work by firefighters kept the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Normandin confirmed there were no major injuries. “Everybody got out,” he said. Smiths Falls Police Staff Sgt. Rick Labelle said members of the service were first on scene. “We landed here first and started getting people out,” he said. While none of the occupants were injured, Labelle did say two officers were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. They have since been released, Normandin said. Mayor Shawn Pankow reported the officers went in to Ryland Coyne/METROLAND Firefighters from the Smiths Falls Fire Department battle the mid-day blaze Friday, April rescue a woman who remained inside the burning build-

28 at 8 Pearl St. There were no major injuries sustained, and the fire crews from town and the surrounding municipalities had the blaze under control within an hour.
