options, space for a marina is a consideration. Coun. Jay Brennan said, "I think a marina would be a fantastic addition to the town. If we agree that there's value, that it's an important part of town, then that's what we take to Parks Canada." Pankow said council has not been made a formal decision on this, or the future of the park. "We have expressed to Parks Canada in meetings about the value of the park and the community and they've been very strong pushing back indicating that they appreciate that but the position is it'll be green space like every other lock station." Brennan said he's like to hear from all parties to have an open discussion about it, "obviously majority rules but it needs to be talked about." Miller said she'd find out from Parks Canada if there is any room to work and will report back. The chamber has been invited to be a delegation to Council in September to discuss relocation plans, concerns and opportunities.

Campers in Victoria Park, Smiths Falls may not have a place to park alongside the Rideau Canal come October 2020. In May Smiths Falls town council extended the lease agreement at Victoria Park to a two-year period with the Smiths Falls & District Chamber of Commerce for the continued operation of the campground. Parks Canada has expressed their desire to remove campgrounds from their waterways and the campground at Victoria Park is included in that plan. During this lease agreement, a supplemental agreement was not signed with Parks Canada. Work is underway with town staff and chamber of commerce board members to evaluate potential locations for moving the campground. Jennifer Miller, the town's economic development and tourism manager, recommended to council at the committee of the whole meeting on Aug. 12,
that they enter into a supplementary agreement with Parks Canada to extend the lease agreement to the end of 2020. This draft agreement mirrors the term of the agreement signed with the chamber, the report states. "The reason for this is Parks Canada's intention on returning that space to a public space," said Malcolm Morris, the town's chief executive officer. Coun. Niki Dwyer wondered if there was any leeway with Park Canada to negotiate. "We were in a meeting with Parks Canada and the chamber of commerce and we talked about that and they said yes if they saw progress toward the next steps," Miller said. "They were completely open to extending if they saw progress." On Aug. 13, chamber members and town staff, including Mayor Shawn Pankow, headed to the Trent Port Marina in Trenton to see if a marina might be a key added piece for the chamber to consider operating. Phase 2 for Smiths Falls town hall could be more expensive than originally thought. During the Smiths Falls committee of the whole meeting at Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre on Aug 12, Art Manhire, director of community services, presented a progress update and cost implications of the town hall Phase 2 renovations. The total budget for the project is $1,945,000 but with additional costs could be as high as $582,813 making the amount a total of $2,257,813 if all additions are completed. There are four components of the building that will need to be addressed as additional costs for Phase 2 of the renovations. These include: 1. Brick replacement
and stabilization of the hose tower, $85,000: In 2012 the town hall removed loose grout and fixed up the stonework but the amount of work didn't include the hose tower. At that point two of the three walls were covered in stucco and those walls were removed, exposing the crumbling brick. The tower forms the side of the new south entrance to the building and will need to be stabilized, repaired and repointed. 2. New diesel generator, $100,000 to $120,000: Town hall is powered by a backup generator to supply power to the whole building to ensure continued service to the fire dispatch services in case of a power outage. The current generator supplying power has had several mechanical issues and needed to be removed. 3. Floor of two-bay fire hall, $75,000: The renovations to the two-bay floor

area is planned to hold administration offices for fire as well as the fire department training room and kitchen. The floor of the two-bay in the fire hall was determined unsafe for having a tanker or other heavy equipment parked on the surface. 4. Re-roofing, $164,115 to $302,813: The flat roof for the complex was originally installed when the addition to town hall was added in 1984. "Phase 2 will act as the power plant for the building, meaning the fire alarm system, the mechanical systems, the power system," Manhire explained. "We're looking at eliminating the cost of hydro in town hall." Malcolm Morris, chief executive officer, suggested Manhire and staff peruse the Climate Action Incentive Fund and if support is needed, to come back to council by Sept. 9.

Two years later, as prime minister, his government brought in legislation that decriminalized homosexuality across Canada. "We did gold shirts this year for the 50th anniversary," said event organizer James Ae Perkins, after the pride parade went through
the streets of downtown Smiths Falls, from town hall to Centennial Park, and the drag show by Gender Illusions on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 10. "They did a phenomenal job," said Perkins of the drag queens who strutted their stuff on stage. The festival has changed somewhat since last year's inaugural event. "We opened it up for vendors this year." There had been some concern that the festival may not have enough volunteers, but the community once again rallied to the cause. "Last week we had several people contact us," said Perkins, and there was no shortage of work for them to do. "We found something for everyone."

WHY REPORT ON THE OPIOID CRISIS? ARNPRIOR OVERDOSES SHOCKED US INTO ACTION, SAYS REPORTER DEREK DUNN DEREK DUNN Column
Agreeing to be interviewed by a reporter requires a leap of faith and a level of courage regardless the topic. For the opioid addict loss of trust is among the most insidious aspects of their reality. Anyone who is a slave to fentanyl or other narcotics is cloaked in distrust: dealers only want your money; other addicts only want your drugs. Paranoia, hostility, and alienation become standard. Add to this the general public's stigma surrounding the recently proclaimed opioid crisis. (One study says 10 people die from illicit drug overdoses every day in Canada.) It is a moral failing, the logical extreme of hedonistic pursuit. Many look away rather than rudely express their belief: 'You have nobody to blame but yourself.' I've produced a few stories on the topic lately, ever since OPP announced five Arnprior overdoses in a period. It shocked a few into action. A business owner kindly organized an overdose-prevention workshop. A survivor bravely shared their story with me. Several shared their concerns about family members or simply their fellow residents. Most of those conversations couldn't be "used" in stories. The information was provided as deep background (mean-
ing they provided facts that I would need to independently verify) or off record. After two decades in journalism, my adherence to J-school training has diminished. Yes, off record only applies when the reporter agrees. And the reason for going off record must be compelling; I'm not on the punch-clock to engage in gossip. Still - a reporter (often a stranger to sources) is a sounding board or a cathartic outlet. It helps them, but also helps to educate the reporter - a person uniquely positioned to reach large audiences. I've learned and shared with our readers much about the opioid crisis. The vast majority of addicts, for instance, harbour some deep-seeded trauma. Sexual violence and abuse during childhood are common causes. There can be a genetic component to addiction. Hence the 'nobody to blame but yourself' is demonstrably wrong. Add in societal influences such as advertising, along with pain-killer addiction caused by hard manual work (a Marxist would have much to say about the brutalities of capitalism). It becomes obvious that most addicts are victims to be helped through mental health services, not criminals to be locked up in expensive jails. The plan is to keep writing on this topic. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE MOVE OVER LAW? MALLORY DAY mallor yday@metroland.com Do you know what to do when you see a police officer, emergency vehicle or tow truck on the side of the road? The law is if an emergency vehicle or tow truck is parked at the side of a multi-lane highway, approaching drivers must slow down and move over into another lane if it's safe to do so. If you are driving on a two-lane roadway and an emergency vehicle, with lights flashing, is approaching from either direction you must slow down and pull over to the closest curb and stop. This helps protect emergency service workers and
anyone else at the roadside and provides a buffer and safe zone. Media relations for the OPP, Bill Dickson said lives can be on the line when police, fire fighters or paramedics are heading to a scene. "Even if the other lane appears clear, it is still important for everyone to clear the entire road until the emergency vehicle passes," said Dickson. "Every second counts in an emergency situation." There's a fine of $490 for the driver and deadly consequences for emergency responders and others if this law is not adhered to. Officers and others have been struck and killed at the side of multi-lane highways due to drivers not
moving over. Since 1989, five OPP officers have been killed while carrying out their duties on the side of the road, and there's been close to 700 people sustaining injuries in the past five years. In a press release from the OPP on July 31, 1,891 charges were laid last year in Ontario to people who failed to slow down and move over, marking one of the highest number of annual OPP charges for this offence since the law was enforced in 2003. The OPP has laid more than 9,000 move over charges in the last five years. "Drivers should always keep their eyes on the road ahead and also frequently check their mirrors," said Dickson. "Be aware of potential hazards or approaching emergency vehicles, road safety is a responsibility we all share."

My sister Audrey said I spent too much time worrying about things that would never happen. That did little to put my mind at ease. Between her telling me that, and Father saying my bladder was too close to my eyes and that's why I cried so much, I came to the conclusion that I was a mess. I was sitting in the grape arbour, my favourite place when I was either sad or
had to think. That day it was a combination of both. I spent little effort pushing the swing with my feet, as I contemplated what both Audrey and Father said more than once. My worry had to do with getting ready to go back to school in a few weeks. I worried that Mother wouldn't have enough money to buy the books I needed, and I would be the only one at the Northcote School sitting at my desk with an empty drawer. Then I started to think of what Father had said about my bladder being close to my eyes and that was why I cried at the drop of a hat. I had no idea what a bladder was, but I gathered it had something to do with tears, so it must have been up around my neck someplace. I felt around my neck, but couldn't feel anything that could be considered unusual.

My thoughts turned to the reasons why I cried so much. I know I cried a lot when I knew it was the day Father would be slaughtering to fill the smoke house. I vowed I would never eat a morsel of meat that came to our table, but of course by the time the meat had been smoked and cured, I had long since forgotten the day of doom, as I called it. I certainly cried when my hateful brother Emerson teased me about my freckles and red hair. I cried because there wasn't a thing I could do about either. And I couldn't remember the many times bad Marguerite had brought me to tears. When she made fun of what I was wearing - made by Mother and not bought at Walker's Store in Renfrew like her fine clothes - or when she reminded me she had a pony and how sad it was that
all we had on our farm were work horses. Yes, that too could bring me to tears. I always seemed to cry when we had relatives come to visit, and they were getting ready to go home. I was sure we would never see them again. Or I would cry because our house would quiet down, and Mother and her relatives singing in harmony at night would be over, and there would be nothing to do but sit at the pine table and look through Eaton's catalogue. That could certainly start the tears flowing. Sometimes, I thought, I cried from sheer joy too. When Miss Crosby praised
me for the neatness of my workbooks or said what a good speller I was, I would have to close my eyes tight to stop the tears of happiness spilling over onto my desk. And often at night, when we were all gathered in the kitchen before bedtime, we kids and Mother at the table doing our own thing, I would look at Father slumped over in the chair by the Findlay Oval. I would see the look of pure exhaustion, his hands limp on the Ottawa Farm Journal, his pipe resting on his chest. I would feel the utmost sadness that he had to work so hard to put food on
our table and clothes on our backs. And the tears would come. Well, there was nothing I could do about my bladder. If God had put it close to my eyes, that's what I would have to live with. TELEMEDICINE: MAKING HEALTH CARE CONNECTIONS IN LANARK, LEEDS AND GRENVILLE "This is so much better than going all the way to Ottawa," said a telemedicine client. "My family could be with me at my appointment, because it was close to home." The client had just attended a telemedicine appointment with a specialist located in Ottawa - but the client was at a health centre located less than 30 minutes from her Leeds and Grenville home. She saw her specialist through the Ontario Telemedicine Network, using a special television screen and video equipment. Hospitals, community health centres, family health teams, mental health organizations, family doctors and nurse practitioners are working together to reduce barriers to health such as distance and travel, using technology to
solve these problems. What is telemedicine? Telemedicine connects people with their health care providers or specialists in much the same way that it's possible to have a video conversation over the internet. Using specialized audiovisual equipment, a secure link between a client and a health consultant is established. This secure link is what makes sure that these sessions are private and confidential. A person receiving care in this way may be in one town, while the health care provider may be located in different city or town. A specially-trained nurse (telemedicine co-ordinator) is able to clinically support clients during their appointment, and is available to assist the specialist as needed. The nurse is also trained to op-
erate the video equipment, and any other equipment that might be involved in the appointment. The doctor might wish to use a digital stethoscope (this makes it possible to listen to a person's heart beating from miles away), or the doctor may wish a picture of a skin condition sent so that he or she can look at it more closely. Telemedicine can also connect clients to support groups or education sessions that may allow them to better manage longstanding or chronic health conditions. Sometimes it's easier to find a certain type of specialist far away than it is to access them closer to home, and telemedicine is a great way to connect with them. Anyone with a valid Ontario Health Card is able to use the service.

A new, black fence will now keep wayward, low-flying baseballs in place at Lower Reach Park in Smiths Falls. The new fencing went up near the baseball diamonds beside the Smiths Falls Curling and Squash Club between July 17 and 19. "We have incorporated a plan to replace fencing in town on a rotational basis," wrote Art Manhire, director of community service for the Town of Smiths Falls, in a July 18 email. "The fence that is being replaced is (of) undetermined age, but we believe it has been there for 30 years or so. There is fencing being replaced as part of the tennis court replacement in Lower Reach Park, too." There is other fencing that has been replaced very recently. Last year, the town "did work on the fencing at the Civitan ball diamond, and the fencing along Lombard Street in Victoria Park," Manhire wrote.
"We replace fencing as we have resources to do so and based on the condition and location of the fence." The town has a fencing replacement/repair budget of $20,000 for this year, and this section of fencing along Old Sly's Lock Road costs about $7,000 "to replace fencing and posts with new, heavier gauge materials," he wrote. However, in a follow-up email from James Craig of Tyzak Fencing and Decks, which installed the fencing, wrote that "the actual renovation cost almost $10,800, before tax." The new fencing is also part of a wider program called "First Impressions," which were developed to "improve the look and feel of the town to people who live (in) and visit Smiths Falls," he added. Using this program, "we identify areas for beautification and plan the best way to address any deficiency we might find."

Live at the Falls, in its inaugural year, will see an impressive blues lineup take to the stage at the Gallipeau Centre. From the man who has brought us Kemptville Live Music Festival over the past five years, Bob Beshara says Live at the Falls was something that was needed. "With the (sabbatical for 2019) of the Calabogie Bluesfest this year, there was a need for a blues festival, and the Gallipeau Centre is the perfect spot for it," Beshara told the Record News. Beshara said he had spoken to Dennis Staples when Staples was the mayor in Smiths Falls (prior to 2014) about bringing a blues festival to town. "Dennis came to me and we talked about it," he said. There are some big acts coming to Smiths Falls, including Colin James and Tom Lavin, who are com-
ing in from Vancouver. The lineup looks like this: * Friday: Joe MacDonald, 5 p.m.; Three Times Lucky, 6:20 p.m.; MonkeyJunk, 7:40 p.m.; and Tom Lavin and the Legendary Powder Blues, 9:30 p.m. * Saturday: Blues and Company, 4:40 p.m.; Murray Kinsley and Wicked Grin, 6 p.m.; Angel Forrest, 7:35 p.m.; and Colin James, 9 p.m. "Angel has the best Janis Joplin sound," Beshara said. If camping is your thing, bring and pitch your tent, or camper; there's lots of room on site. There will be food vendors, and merchandise from the various artists will be for sale. The location for this (Live at the Falls) is great - the Gallipeau Centre will have everything on site." Numbers in Kemptville jumped from 5,000 guests in 2015 to 12,000 in 2016; 17,000 in 2017 and 21,000 in 2018, and finally, to 24,000 this year. THE IMPACT OF MENTORING WITH BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF LANARK COUNTY This match started four months ago, but at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County, we feel this match will be one that continues for years to come. Fiona, 9, struggled with relating to her peers, was often bullied and felt very alone at school until a volunteer at her school was matched with her as an inschool-mentor. Fiona and Brenda (a retired teacher) hit it off immediately. Jon, our mentoring coordinator shared, "Fiona's energy completely changes when she is around Brenda, she lights up." Fiona and Brenda share their love for art and reading together. Brenda supports Fiona in creating her own comic books and drawings. Recently, Fiona was able to meet an editor and an artist through Brenda's connections. Fiona is able to experience many new and exciting things in life because of her friendship with Brenda. Their in-school match has now become a traditional match within the agency so they can spend more time together.

A nearly 150-year-old hotel once dubbed by British royalty as the "loveliest place in all of Canada" is up for sale. The show is being held at the Smiths Falls Civitan Hall at 12468 Highway 15 North on Aug. 17. Displays consist of a wide variety of flower arrangements and designs, as well as numerous classes of vegetables. Viewing of all of the show is open to the public, with free admission to everyone around 12:30 p.m. after the judging is completed. Our president Debra Bellevue will conduct the opening ceremonies at 1 p.m., followed by the presentation of the awards for the winning entries. There will be light refreshments available for purchase, as well as a silent auction of a number of very select items. Lindsey McFadden, owner of Autumn's Fine Flowers, will be doing a floral design demonstration and will donate her design to the silent auction. There will also be a head-to-head floral arrangement competition with four competitors. This will prove to be an interesting as-
pect of the show as the participants achieve their arrangements in full view and in limited time. McLEISH, June It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our wife, mother, grandmother and friend, June McLeish, aged 66, on August 6, 2019, due to cancer. In her final days she was surrounded by family and music just as she wished. She was born July 8, 1953 in St John, NB, and was lovingly chosen by Mary (D) and Omar Kumm (D) to be their child. She had a zest for life and welcomed everyone into her home regardless of race, monetary status, age or sexual preference. She believed in seeing the truth and beauty in all people. She is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, Ian McLeish, her daughters Lana Spicer (Craig), Valerie Beale (Fraser). Eila McLeish, her sons, Christopher Gibson, Wyatt Boucher, and Wilson McLeish. She is also survived by her numerous grandchildren Amber (Dan), Samantha (Mike), Ayden, Maia, Ryan and Tyler and by her great grandchildren Benjamin and Riley. She was the matriarch of our family, a source of constant joy and light, gracing every room she entered with her beautiful and infectious smile. June was a person who gave back to the community and always tried to be the champion of those that were in the most need. She loved animals with a passion, especially cats and her home was always a haven for them. Ulysses, Duffy, Alice and Gizmo will miss her deeply. PALMER, John Gray November 6, 1921 - August 7, 2019 After living a full, rich life Gray Palmer (son of the late Mabel and Jack Palmer) quietly slipped away at the GWM Hospital in Perth. His 97 years began and finished at his dearly loved Christie Lake. He had called Mont Jolie Quebec his home during WWII. Irene and Gray resided in Perth to raise their family until retirement led them once more back to Christie Lake. Gray was predeceased by his wife Irene (Poole), his brother Elwood (in his 100th year) and his oldest son Robert. Left to carry on the Palmer tradition are; his daughter-in-law Dawn (late Bob), son Doug and his wife Judy, his grandsons: Shaun (Christine), Cory (Nicole) Derek (Laura) and his great-grandchildren, Amelia, Olivia and Ellie. Gray will also be dearly missed by his stepchildren: Lorna and Wayne and their families, many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. We will forever remember Gray’s quick wit, excellent memory, his carpentry skills and his ability to entertain others with colourful stories of “days gone by”. Gray enlightened many as he regaled tales and actions of early days at Christie Lake. Our family deeply appreciates the efforts of so many who helped Gray fulfill his last wish of living at the lake up until his last few days. As his challenges became greater many agencies offered love, support and compassion to Gray and his family. We are humbled, grateful and beyond thankful to Dr. Gauthier and his staff, dedicated Bayshore caregivers, Perth Home Support, the amazingly supportive Veterans Affairs and last but certainly not least, his dear devoted friends, family and neighbours. McTAVISH, Dixie Lee 1957 - 2019 With heavy hearts and deep sorrow we announce the death of Dixie McTavish. She was the outstanding and loving mother of Andrew (Kelly) James and Leah (Shawn Kuruneru) James, wife of Kevin James (1978-2010), and proud grandmother of Lydia, Maren, Ruth, and Edison James. The cherished daughter of Ruth and Bob McTavish, and beloved sister of Art and Steve McTavish. Dixie passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Kingston General Hospital with her family by her side. She will be remembered for her generous heart, her kind, gentle spirit, and positive and cheery attitude. She taught us to enjoy the small things in life and to always see the best in every situation, person, and place. Her curious spirit lead her to earn a BA from Queens University and a Bachelor of Education from University of Ottawa. She held careers as a florist, a business owner and partner, and in recent years, an educational assistant with the Upper Canada District School Board. Dixie will be remembered as a creative and energetic soul. She was an avid drawer, gardener, and in her younger years, a painter. Her family will treasure the paintings and drawings that she has left with us from years past. She will also be remembered as a loving mother. Her commitment to her children was profound. It was certainly remembered over the past months when Dixie needed her children’s attention and care. This lesson in love will not be forgotten. Though her time with us was too short, her spirit lives on in her children, grandchildren and all the friends and people she touched along her journey. Our family would like to thank the teams at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospitals and the Cancer Center of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital for their exceptional care. SPRUNT, James Ormer October 4, 1949 - August 7, 2019 The HMS “Jimmy” has made its final voyage and has arrived on Heaven’s shores on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 from the Rosamond Wing of the Almonte General Hospital. “Captain Jimmy” was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on October 4, 1949 to Ernest B. and Anna (Young) Sprunt. He leaves behind his sister, Mary Lou Chamberlain (Paul), Will Sprunt (Wendy), and Doug Sprunt (Linda) as well as his sister-in-law, Marlene Sprunt. Also, mourning his passing are his 10 nieces and nephews and their spouses as well as several great-nieces and nephews. Crew mates Bill Seabrooke, Rob Milne, Jeff Cameron, and the team at Jericho Road. As per Jimmy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. MOORE, Berneice Eleanor Berneice Eleanor Moore (nee Reed) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 14 at her home In South Elmsley, Ontario at the age of 87. She was born February 28, 1932 to Mary Ann and Alan (Bud) Reed and spent her early life on the family farm outside of Elrose, Saskatchewan. A survivor of polio in her youth she never let adversity get her down. Following a brief stint at secretarial school she joined the Canadian Air Force where she met and married the love of her life Cecil Moore. Together they spent 66 years of adventures together variously joined by their five children, dogs, cats, canaries and sundry other participants as they crisscrossed the country as part of their military life together. The pair eventually settled down in Yorkton Saskatchewan until retirement brought them east to their dream home outside of Lombardy Ontario where they spent another 25 happy years together. Never shy to make her opinion known, Berneice loved her family, gardening, spending time exploring the land surrounding their property and in her later years she could be seen eagerly zipping about in her Gator on B6. Pre-deceased by Cecil in 2015, she now goes to join him for their next adventure together. She will be missed by her family, daughters, Mary, Donna and Susan, sons Russell and David, as well as her 13 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. She is survived by her sister Frances Hanson and multiple nieces and nephews. A ceremony will be held at Lannin Funeral Home, 32 Main Street, Smith Falls Ontario at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 20 followed by interment immediately after at Lombardy Cemetery located just off Highway 15 and Rideau Ferry Road. All are welcome to join the family for a reception to celebrate her life and legacy to be held at her home at 118 Otter Lake Road following the proceedings.

WICKWARE, A. James “Jim” Jim passed away suddenly while on holiday with family near Cochrane, Ontario on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at the age of 70 years. He was predeceased by his first wife Gaye “Raycroft” Wickware. MAPPLEBECK, Barry Barry passed away peacefully at home July 30, 2019 at the age of 75. Beloved husband of Margaret. Father of Jennifer, Paula and Jocelyn (Jon Huot). Grandfather of Brian, Olivia and Jiraiya. He will be missed by his two sisters Arlene and Lori. He was predeceased by his parents Desmond and Aili, and his brother Dennis Michael of Timmins, ON. Barry worked in Human Resources, Brockville, then Southwestern Regional Centre before moving to Rideau Regional Centre. He retired from there and worked at Ongwanada, Kingston for several years. He was an active Mason, Shriner, and Keystone Cop as well as an active member of the Eastern Star. He was on several boards at Trinity United Church in Smiths Falls, he enjoyed golfing with his buddies. He will be sadly missed by all his family and his many friends. CATON, Richard James “Rick” December 2, 1951 - August 5, 2019 It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Rick Caton in the Perth hospital. Rick passed away peacefully on August 5, 2019 after a courageous struggle with brain cancer. Rick was the dearly loved husband of Pamela Grant and father to Kristina Russell (John Richard) and Janna Holmes (Andrew). Proud grandfather of Jack and Max Holmes. Loving brother of Lori McIntee (Gonzalo Bustos) and brother-in-law of Gordon Grant (the late Maryke McCarron). Loving uncle of Kate McIntee (Steve Cote) and Kerry McIntee (Amy). Fondly remembered by Gail Caton. Predeceased by his parents James Edgar Caton and Phyllis Marjorie Caton (nee Parkes). Born in Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Rick developed a love of all nature, and especially of birdlife, at a young age. He pursued this interest by working as a naturalist in his younger years, and eventually taking up bird carving. He was also a talented musician; Rick played the guitar and sang, in bands, in bars, and around the campfire. Witty and charming, he enjoyed life to the fullest. Family and friends will gather at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W., Perth on Sunday, August 11, 2019 for a service to honour his life at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception in the Blair & Son Family Centre. Following the reception, all are invited for a Celebration of His Life at the family home on Mary Street. The family extends thanks to all those who helped to brighten Rick’s days as he faced health challenges, including Bill Gibson, Bob Reid, PSW Mike Thomas, nurse Leslie Richmond, Dr. Taylor Ferrier, the nurses on the second floor of the PSFDH, and others. We are grateful for the wonderful compassionate support offered in our community, both on an individual level and through our healthcare system. Robin and Annette Lindop CHAMBERLAND, Annette (nee Dubroy) Annette passed away peacefully at the Smiths Falls Hospital on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at the age of 91. Loving wife of the late Gerald Chamberland. Devoted mother of Ray Chamberland (Carol Anne) and Steven Chamberland (Liane). She is also predeceased by her daughter Carmen, as well as her brother Lloyd. Annette will be fondly remembered by her many extended family and friends in the Smiths Falls community, along with her fellow residents at Willowdale Retirement Residence. There will be a private prayer service for Annette at the Willowdale Retirement Residence at a later date, which will be followed by the interment at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery.
