For one Smiths Falls family, they say they are thankful to be alive after the chain-reaction collision took out a half-dozen vehicles and left the road blocked for several hours while police investigated. "We are so thankful to be alive," said Melissa Van Alstine,
who with her son Landon, 9, and husband Darrell Logan, still feel the side effects - both mentally and physically. Van Alstine, who sustained shoulder and stomach injuries from the seatbelt, and friction burns on her arm from the deployed airbag, said on Monday, See FAMILY, page 2

FAMILY OFFERS THANKS TO THOSE WHO HELPED AFTER COLLISION Continued from page 1
July 29, that she thinks about the accident every day. "We were very fortunate that a tractor trailer wasn't coming down that road," said Logan. "They travel that road all the time." Landon was in the car behind them with the neighbours and their sixyear-old boy, as the two families were going to spend the day at the Westport beach. VanAlstine said she doesn't remember a lot, "but we were told that a Kia Soul was in front of ours, veered out into oncoming traffic to pass the stopped
car in front of him - for whatever reason - because this car in front was signalling to turn left. When he veered out, he hit an oncoming truck head on." That caused a chain reaction of collisions, eventually involving some six vehicles. Many people, including Van Alstine and Logan, were transported to the Smiths Falls hospital and released with minor injuries. They were talking about putting the directions to the beach into her GPS and looked at her phone. The next thing she knew, the crash had occurred. "We didn't have a chance to do anything," Van Al-
stine said. The family was on scene about 1.5 hours before being taken to hospital. During that time, before fire and EMS had showed up, people had stopped to assist. "They were coming to check on all of us," Van Alstine said, offering food, water, a place for kids to play. "It felt like a war zone," Logan said. An off-duty firefighter from Ottawa also stopped to help. "It was good to see they were patient with everybody in a time of crisis. The firemen were passing out water bottles to everybody," she said. "They nev-
er once complained, and they had to work in that heat. They never thought about themselves. It was all about the victims," Van Alstine said. "We're grateful to be alive, and that the kids were fine," she said. Van Alstine took to social media to thank those who helped them during their time of need. Logan and Van Alstine said they just want to know why the accident happened. "What was he thinking?" Logan said. "I know with 110 per cent, I wouldn't have made a choice like that - not on a highway with a double line like that." "If my son had be hurt, or
killed, he'd be getting more than just careless driving," Van Alstine said. "The part that pisses me off - the kids involved in this. The boys are the best of friends." The kids are traumatized, but Van Alstine said she thanks the firefighter, Andrew Fleming, who gave him a trauma teddy bear, naming it "Lombardy." "That was really heartwarming for me," she said. "When he knew we were leaving by ambulance, he hugged and comforted Landon. He sent the boys home with lunch kits and teddy bears," she said. "Through all of that and that crisis, there's a fireman who stepped up to do
more than just his job and he looked after my kid when I couldn't." Landon sleeps with that bear now, but the boy has had some issues the last couple nights. "He's just scared that something's going to happen," Van Alstine said, as they take some extra time tucking Landon into bed at night, and cuddling with him. Van Alstine said she has panic attacks when she gets into a vehicle now. "I just don't want to drive. The automatic reaction is gut wrenching. But what will haunt her is: "Why ... why did this happen?"

New to the fair this year is a family laser light show happening on Aug. 4 at 9 p.m. in the Agricultural Education Centre. The hall isn't only being used just for the fair, from April to October, it is booked up for weddings, stag and do parties, and big family gatherings during the summer months. "Auctions, big family Christmas parties, workshops and sometimes the school board will rent the hall in the winter time," said Drummond. "People also rent a spot in the barn to store their summer vehicles, like boats." The agricultural has eight buildings on the property and is soon to be home of one more. The
Kemptville College Alumni is relocating to the fairgrounds where the college will display photos, yearbooks and other items from the former college. "We asked that the roof is orange," laughed Drummond. "That's kind of our thing." The Lombardy Agricultural Society renovated the agricultural hall located at Lombardy fairgrounds in perfect time to kick off the 153rd Lombardy Fair set for the Civic holiday weekend, Aug. 2 to 4. The hall was built 37 years ago and the whole facility needed upgrading but still kept the original country charm and holds a capacity of 314 people. Many board members and volunteers came together through local support and fundraising to make this renovation happen. "We are so proud of what we have accomplished," volunteer Nora Brown said in an email after the hall was complete. In a statement regarding the completion of the hall from the society, it listed the upgrades in the hall which are: washrooms, making them more accessible, new propane heating and air conditioning that runs with the new hot water tank, completely renovated kitchen with new cabinets, a new bar, and electrical. The society has also installed Wi-Fi to help groups that do workshops at the hall. Second vice-president of the agricultural society, Judy Drummond, said the renovations were completed near the end of March and the society celebrated by having a kitchen party shortly after. "Accessibility is where the idea first came up," said Drummond. "We put in an accessible washroom with a push button at the door and then went from there." During the fair, the hall will be filled with art work from schools, flowers, a tea room and the stage inside the hall will have old family photos from various fair years.

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Monday, August 26, 2019 in the Council Chambers at the Municipal Office at 6544 New Dublin Road WITH RESPECT TO the first draft of a proposed Comprehensive Zoning By-law amendment under the Planning Act, R.S.O., 1990, Chapter P.13, Section 26(9) and Section 34. The purpose of this amendment is to align the Township’s Comprehensive Zoning By-law No. 13-21, as amended with the recently approved Official Plan by making several modifications to the Definitions, General Provisions, Zone Standards and Zoning Schedules of the Zoning By-law. The changes are intended to implement revised Official Plan policies, and includes, but not limited to amendments that add definitions and general provisions relating to cannabis growing and processing facilities, second units, source water protection and tiny homes. The amendment also revises various zone standards relating to minimum lot area and minimum lot frontage, and removes the minimum dwelling unit area for several zones to permit tiny homes. In addition, the amendment replaces the zone maps to reflect mapping updates that affect certain zone boundaries and to correct known mapping errors. The effect of the amendment would be to implement the policies of the Official Plan and to address various zoning matters that have been identified by the public and/or staff through experience in working with the Zoning By-law and through comments received during the Official Plan review process. A copy of the draft Zoning By-law with proposed revisions is available on the Township website at: www.ektwp.ca (specifically under http://www.ektwp.ca/content/zoning-law). The draft tracks changes to the document to identify amendments. A paper copy of the document is available for public viewing at the Township’s main office at 6544 New Dublin Rd. (New Dublin) and also at the satellite office at 424 County Rd.29 (Toledo).

It was swapped out so suddenly, but there is a reason one of the stop signs beside the Trinity United Church looks a little less reflective. On the morning of Thursday, July 18, two town employees were seen swapping out an old stop sign at the intersection of Russell Street East and Market Street North, for a new sign. "The Public Works and Utilities Department carries out routine road patrols according toe the provincial minimum maintenance standard regulation," wrote W. Troy Dunlop, the town's director of public works and utilities in a July 18 email. "At times, regulatory signs such as stop signs

The era of the automobile may be coming to an end at Smiths Falls town hall - or, at least how staffers talk about getting around. The old terms of reference for the traffic advisory committee were "very auto-oriented," said Troy Dunlop, the town's director of public works and utilities, during council's committee of the whole meeting on Monday, June 24. One way in which the terms are outdated include that "cycling (as a) mode of travel is not referenced," at all, he said, nor is active transport. One change he wanted to see were "provisions for traffic calming," he said. Another change to consider could be calling it the transport committee instead of the traffic advisory committee - a more modern title. Coun. Jay Brennan asked if a member of council could be added to the committee. "We could certainly entertain that," said Dunlop. "It may be a good idea." There are currently four resident appointments on the committee, and one from the health unit. Coun. Niki Dwyer also pointed out that there are many other forms of transport that also use Smiths Falls' roads, from scooters to ATVs to snowmobiles. "The range of vehicle types are changing dramatically," said Dunlop.

LOCAL HEALTH HUMAN RESOURCE COMMITTEE IN HIGH GEAR Recent news of the upcoming departure or retirement of several family physicians in Perth and Smiths Falls has highlighted the importance of the local Health Human Resources Committee (HHRC). The committee, reformatted and expanded in 2018, is a local initiative to co-ordinate and maximize the delivery of primary care health services. "We understand community members concerns when they hear about a family physician leaving," said HHRC chair Michele Bellows, CEO of Rideau Community Health Services (RCHS). "We want people to know that we're on this and are actively working to recruit primary care providers to our communities. Dr. Barry Guppy and chief of staff Dr. Kate Stole; municipal leaders from Perth, Smiths Falls and Merrickville-Wolford; family physicians from local physician groups as well as members from the Nurse Practitioner Led-Clinic; Community Health Centres in the area, HealthForceOntario and Valley Heartland Economic Development. PSFDH's professional physician recruiter is also on the committee. RCHS CEO Bellows says that one of the challenges all communities in Ontario face when it comes to primary health care delivery is that no single authority or agency is responsible for it. "This is why it's so important that it's a community effort. As a community we're collectively responsible for ensuring we have great access to primary care," she said, noting that the committee met in midJuly and will again in early August. "With our committee and community partners we're creating a strong and integrated primary care community throughout the entire area."
At present, the HHRC is focused on developing concrete near-term bridging solutions for local patients who will lose a family physician. As a permanent coordinating body, the HHRC will also develop a longerterm co-ordinated health human resources plan to meet the changing and growing needs of the Smiths Falls, Perth and surrounding communities. PSFDH CEO Dr. Guppy notes that since 2013 the Perth and Smiths Falls communities' ongoing recruitment efforts have enabled successful recruitment of physicians who specialize in in-patient care, emergency physicians and several family physicians. "We have a great community," said Dr. Guppy. "We've successfully recruited in the past, and patients should feel reassured that we're working as a total community to build on this tradition of success." Now is the time of year when homeowners may see more bats than usual, and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Health Unit offers advice to keep family and pets safe against rabies, histoplasmosis, distacemper and mange. These nocturnal animals feed most actively two or three hours following sunset. They are efficient insect controllers eating about three times their body weight. Bats typically have their babies in June and come August many of the young bats are looking for their own roosting sites. Many bats will roost and hibernate in attics. Although bats are beneficial, they can carry diseases as listed above. Approximately three per cent of bats carry the rabies virus. The most common signs of rabies in bats are the inability to fly and resting in unusual places such as the ground or floor. It is important to remember many of the bats that get into our homes are healthy bats and are looking for a way out. If you find a bat in your home and are sure that there was no human or animal contact, try to confine the bat to one room by closing the door of the room. Open a window or door to the outside and then turn out the lights; the bat should fly out early in the evening. Be sure to wear gloves and other protective clothing when dealing with a bat. If you are bitten, or if saliva from a bat gets into your eyes, nose, mouth or a wound, wash the affected area thoroughly and get medical attention immediately. Should you find a bat in your home and are unsure if it has bitten a family member, contact your health care provider and the health unit to determine if treatment is required. Prior to calling though, check for fresh bites and scratches that may be a result of contact with the bat. Bat proofing your house is necessary when they get inside your living space. It is advisable to contact a pest management company or a wildlife conservation agency for assistance with bat-proofing. To protect pets from rabies it is important to vaccinate them. Rabies vaccination is mandatory in Ontario for domestic cats and dogs. The health unit, in partnership with local veterinarians and municipalities, will be holding the annual rabies clinics Sept. 18 and 25. The cost is $20 each. No, I'm not referring to the relatively invisible Scott Reid, who has been our MP for 18 years! Sharbot Lake and Smiths Falls. Highway 7 is becoming four-lanes between Peterborough and Carleton Place. Shouldn't our candidate be at this table of LFK economic development? BECKWITH STREETS GETS CONNECTING LINKS FUNDING The Town of Smiths Falls is pleased to announce that its application for funding under the Connecting Links 2019-2020 program was approved. The Connecting Links Program provides dedicated provincial funding for road and bridge projects on designated connecting link highways. "We are very pleased that the Province of Ontario has chosen to support council's objective for the redevelopment of Beckwith Street," said Mayor Shawn Pankow. "This project will enable council to follow through with its stated priority of revitalizing and modernizing our downtown." The town submitted an application to the province
placement and separation of wastewater and stormwater sewers and new water mains, this announcement demonstrates the province's commitment to the community. The town will receive the maximum eligible contribution of $2.1 million, to be applied toward the Phase 1 Reconstruction of Beckwith Street (Chambers to Russell). The funding will be used for road reconstruction, improved markings and medians, curbs, traffic signal upgrades, and lighting at intersections. Under the program, the project must be completed by December 31, 2021. Securing funding from the province also reaffirms the town's commitment to improve its financial position and save taxpayer dollars.

DIGITAL SERVICE SQUAD TO VISIT BUSINESSES IN SMITHS FALLS SPECIALIST GAELLE GIRAUDEAU TO HELP PEOPLE ESTABLISH GOOGLE BUSINESS PROFILES The Smiths Falls Downtown Business Association has announced that it has received a grant from the Ontario government to fund a Digital Service Squad to help main street small businesses improve their online capabilities. As part of Digital Main Street, the SFDBA received a $10,000 grant from the Ontario government to establish a Digital Service Squad to help small businesses in the downtown area enhance their use of digital
tools and techniques to better evolve and grow. The squad will consist of a trained specialist, Gaelle Giraudeau, who will visit and assist DBAarea businesses at no cost to help them set up Google Business, conduct a digital-readiness assessment and apply for a $2,500 Digital Transformation Grant. Gaelle started to visit businesses July 16. A joint program funded by the Government of Ontario and delivered by the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association, Digital Main Street helps improve how small main street businesses use digital tools and techniques to become more successful. Today's digital economy is vital to small businesses,
and DMS will help them adopt new digital technologies from e-commerce and social media to back-office systems such as payroll and inventory. "Our government is committed to helping small businesses improve their competitiveness, create jobs and attract investment," said Ernie Hardeman, minister of agriculture, food and rural affairs. "That's why I'm so pleased that businesses in Smiths Falls will benefit from the expertise of a Digital Service Squad to help small businesses embrace digital technology. “ Our investment in the Digital Main Street program will help to ensure that Ontario is open for business and open for jobs."

'MADE BY STUDENTS, FOR STUDENTS': SMITHS FALLS NATIVE CREATES AN ONLINE TUTORING GROUP MALLORY DAY mallor yday@metroland.com Smiths Falls native, Andrew Lorimer, created an online group called All Access Tutoring to help students who can't afford a tutor. The website was launched in June and reaches out to students across Canada. Lorimer graduated from neuroscience at Queen's University and is currently living in Brampton with his aunt, uncle and cousins while he studies for his third attempt of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Lorimer started tutoring after school when he was in Grade 12 at St.
John Catholic High School in Perth by playing games to help the students learn. "I tutored back in high school," said Lorimer. "I had five or six students at once so I had my own classroom." The 22-year-old said he does video chats through Zoom Video Communications and Skype so he can talk to the students one-onone. "If the site gets big enough I want to do a live stream over YouTube so I can help lots of people at once," replied Lorimer. The majority of the incoming students are from university, but Lorimer also said he's looking to help anyone ranging from high
school up to college/university struggling in any kind of science. Lorimer focuses on chemistry, physics and other sciences and maths. All the high school science- and universitylevel courses are listed at www.allaccesstutoring.com"If someone came to me needing help in history or English courses, I would help them out the best I can," he said. "Chemistry is my favourite subject." Lorimer said he has good teaching methods when it comes to studying. He has more than 200 hours of teaching experience. "I find that when you break things down into their fundamental components and provide simple
examples, students discover that they knew the solution all along." This young entrepreneur got his start in lawn care in 2015 when he was

WISH OF A LIFETIME COMES TRUE FOR SMITHS FALLS SENIOR It was a trip through time and from sadness to joy as a Smiths Falls senior's train journey honoured the memory of her grandmother. Margaret O'Hearn was only 16 when tragedy intervened and her beloved grandmother died on the eve of a planned rail adventure together nearly 65 years ago. Now 80, Margaret had not stepped foot on a train since - until travelling from Smiths Falls to Niagara on July 11. "It was something I wanted for so long," says the resident of Chartwell Willowdale Retirement Residence. "My grandmother would be so proud." The trip was made possible by Chartwell Retirement Residences and Wish Of A Lifetime Canada. Since 2015, 112 deserving seniors have had their

SMITHS FALLS SHOW AND SHINE CAR SHOW UNDERLINES GROWING FEMALE PRESENCE AMONGST GEARHEADS DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com "My mum said I should have been a boy, because I love cars," said Kelly Watson, as she polished the rims of her new ride, a 2018 Roush JackHammer, limited edition GT Premium Mustang - one of only nine in Canada, and one of only 198 worldwide. "There are a surprising number of women interested in cars," said Watson, as she buffed up the rims. "It's not just a guy thing any more." Watson was one of many exhibitors at the Rise at the Falls Car Club's Show and Shine event held at Lower Reach Park on Sunday, July 14. She also has a 1969 Cougar at home. Collecting classic cars certainly runs in the family. She remembers helping her brother work on his Camaro in the family driveway when she
was a child, and "I was always out there working with him. It's in the DNA!" And what drove her, so to speak, to want to buy such a car as the JackHammer? "I saw it and I fell in love," she said simply, during a trip to Kingston. She returned, took a test drive, and signed the papers that day. The car has been making the rounds of the car show circuit ever since, with 15 shows so far this season, two of which were just the day before. "It's a beauty," she said, boasting that with 840 horsepower, it can go from 0 to 60 km/h in 3.2 seconds. BIG ON MINIS Carleton Place resident Hill Goldberg, fell in love with the most British of cars, the Austin Mini, when he was 18 years old, growing up in Montreal. He was invited to attend the "Mainly Minis" club one day, and, afterwards, he knew, "I am hooked."
Goldberg has owned nine of the cars in his life, and "it's the only thing I've been hooked on, until the day I die." His wife is likely hoping that his latest 1998 Austin Mini will last him a long time because she has told him, in no uncertain terms, that "it's the last one you're getting. Enjoy it." There is an ongoing debate within Mini circles about whether the later model Minis really count. "It's not a real Mini," he will hear them say. "It's like the (Volkswagen) Beetle." No matter which side of the Mini (or Beetle) divide one was on that morning, car camaraderie was very much in evidence when several exhibitors came to the aid of Jim Monahan of Munster, in helping get his 1976 Pontiac Astre that had gotten stuck - with Hill running to get a rope that saw several men pulling, and several more pushing, the car off of a wayward rock jutting out of the earth.

THERE WAS NO ARGUING WITH MOTHER WHEN A STORM WAS BREWING IT WAS ALWAYS A PRODUCTION DURING A THUNDERSTORM, MARY COOK WRITES MARY COOK Column
All mother needed to hear was the far-away rumble of thunder, and she went right into action, preparing us for survival. She was sure it wasn't a case of IF the house was going to be struck with lightening, but WHEN. On that blistering hot day, the only thing different when we heard the thunder off in the distance, was that Aunt Vanetta was visiting us from Ottawa, and she was sure a match for Mother when it came to storms. The sky had darkened, the sounds of thunder were

getting closer and lightening was flashing, brightening up the kitchen. So that meant the first order of business was pulling down the green blinds, and lighting the coal oil lamp on the pine table. Of course, we five children had been herded into the house with the first peel of thunder, and Father, knowing full well what was happening inside, had vanished into the barn. We weren't allowed to sit anywhere near a window, so we were all in a huddle in the centre of the kitchen sitting like we were ready to play 'musical chairs'. And everyone had to wear rubber-soled running shoes. Of course, neither Audrey nor I owned running shoes, so there we sat
with our feet in shoes that belonged to our brothers. It didn't matter, as long as they had rubber soles, which Mother was sure would save us from a lightening strike. Aunt Vanetta had her Rosary beads in her hand, and a small bottle that looked exactly like the bottles Mother bought from the Raleigh man that held vanilla. We knew it was full of holy water, having been blessed at the Catholic church in Ottawa. Because Mother was so frightened, that's all it took for me to cringe and sit so close to my sister Audrey that she told me she couldn't breathe, and I had to huddle in my own chair, waiting for the lightening to strike our house, which I was sure would happen any minute. The heat in the kitchen was enough to suffocate us,

but there we would have to sit until the peel of thunder was so faint, the storm sounded like it had moved off to another country. Before Aunt Vanetta settled down in a chair in the middle of the kitchen, she took the little vial of holy water and tossed a few drops in the general direction of the windows and the tightly closed door. I had no idea how that would prevent a lightening strike, but it sure made me feel better. Every time the thunder roared, Aunt Vanetta and Mother would cross themselves. Emerson, under his breath, said, "They're a little late, the clap of thunder only comes after the lightening" . My brothers thought the whole idea was sheer nonsense anyway. They would much rather have waited out the storm in the barn with Fa-
ther. At least they could play in the hay mow. But Mother wanted everyone in the house, and that's all there was too it. No arguing with Mother when there was a storm brewing. Mother always said thunder storms were worse in the country than they were in New York City. She said she felt safe amongst the tall buildings, all of which had spikes of lightening rods sticking out of their roofs. She also vowed that as soon as she could gather enough egg money, she was having the same rods put on the roof our house. Or course, that never happened. And so we sat out the storms, as Mother said, 'like sitting ducks', whatever that meant. As soon as the thunder was so faint, you could hardly hear it, Mother rolled up the blinds, threw
open the kitchen door, and blew out the lamp on the table. Aunt Vanetta had taken her bottle of holy water upstairs to the bedroom, and the whole house settled down. The running shoes were put back under the bench at the back door, and the brothers headed outside. As for me, I was grateful the storm hit in the daytime. When one came through the night, everyone had to get out of bed, get dressed, and go through the same routine of sitting in the middle of the kitchen wearing rubber soled shoes. That is, except Father, who slept through every night storm, sure that the old log house which had stood for generations wasn't about to go anywhere because of a bit of rain and thunder. SMITHS FALLS MEN'S TWILIGHT LEAGUE The July 25 edition of the SFG & CC Thursday Night Men's Twilight golf was sponsored by Hunt and Dopson Insurance Group. The format was scramble and it was a perfect summer evening of golf action. Justin Pomeroy, Cole McCreary, Nick Mitchell, and Mike Huppert posted the low score on the front nine. The power trio of Tom Burns, Levi Green, and Mel Thompson claimed victory on the back. The Roosteraunt closest to the pin prizes went to retiree Colin Brown and Billy Ballantyne for their tee shots on holes 8 and 14. Mike Huppert and Nic Vail-
lancourt took home the Burns Jewellers gift certificates for the best second shots on holes 2 and 15. The Town and Country Chrysler longest drives were sent into orbit by Josh Veneer and Ryan Henderson on holes 4 and 17. Art Rent won the Milano's Pizza prize for a great tee shot on hole 3, and the Valley Custom Cutting gift certificate went to Rocky Rotundo for his beauty on hole 16. What will happen to the Smiths Falls' water treatment plant project now that Bruce Linton is no longer with Canopy Growth? The former co-CEO stepped down from the position at the cannabis plant on Wednesday, July 3, just 10 days after he was a delegation at the Smiths Falls town council touting big plans for the old water treatment plant, which includes a hotel/office/conference centre space. "(It is) kind of an irrational site to tackle, but I want to do it," Linton said during his presentation to council on June 24. Linton said his time as the co-CEO had come to an end, and taking his place is Mark Zekulin who is now the sole CEO of the company and will work with the board to begin a search to identify a new leader to guide the company in its next phase of growth, which will include both internal and external candidates. HOBBS, John William John (Jack) William Hobbs, age 76, of Lanark Highlands, Ontario, passed away peacefully, surrounded by close friends and family on July 23, 2019, at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. Jack was an adventurous and spirit-driven soul who lived life to the fullest. He loved spending his time outdoors surrounded by nature at his lake, with his greatest love being his family. Jack was born to the late Elsie and John Hobbs in Montreal, Quebec. He is the beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Smith) Hobbs married 53 years and loving father to Sharon Hobbs (Chet) and John Hobbs (Karen). Jack is cherished by five grandchildren, Noah, Kai, Siobhan, Nicholas and Rowan. MATTHEWS, John Edmund December 1, 1942 - July 22, 2019 John Matthews passed away early Monday July 22, 2019. He leaves behind his devoted wife Pierrette, their son together, Justin Matthews and his four children Christa Matthews (Hanna), Matthew Dickson, Tamara Woods (Matthews) and Elizabeth Matthews. He is survived by his nine grandchildren and his brothers Wilmot, Robert and Don. He was predeceased by his sister Jennifer Connolly. John was an artist, with an eye for architecture, design and a great appreciation for nature. His love for travel took him around the globe, traveling throughout North America, Europe, India, South East Asia and Australia. He attended Mount Allison University, where he studied under esteemed artists such as Alex Colville. After graduating from The Art Students League in New York City in the 60’s, he was accepted to apprentice with Henry Moore in England where he was greatly inspired and would continue creating sculptures very reminiscent of Moore. John owned an historic farm and mill, Allan’s Mill, just west of Perth, Ontario, where he lovingly spent much of his adult life with his family and his dogs. His studio, in the beautifully restored mill was a place of much inspiration, where many of his creative sculptures were born. A great admiration for stone developed while restoring his home, it’s surrounding buildings and others. This included a building in the heritage town of Perth, for which he won the Heritage Canada Regional Award. John received many significant commissions in his lifetime. He was awarded by his Excellency Roland Michener to create the Michener Award for Journalism, commissioned by Dr. R.H. Hubbard, chief curator of the National Gallery of Canada. John designed a ceremonial mace for the Royal Society of Canada, commissioned by Her Excellency Mme. Jules Léger, which serves as a medal awarded annually by Heritage Canada. John was also commissioned by Governor General Schreyer to design an award for the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada. Beyond the accolades, he will be remembered for his love of family, heritage, history, art and nature. Diagnosed with early onset dementia, John lived with the decline of this disease for 16 years. May he now find peace. Friends and family are invited to a Visitation on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services (280 Beechwood Ave.) between 11:30 am to 1 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service and light luncheon. In lieu of flowers and in memory of John, the family suggest donations be made to a dementia foundation of your choice.

SEARLE, John V. (LT CMDR, RCN, ret’d) December 3, 1928 - July 24, 2019 Peacefully at Lanark Lodge, Perth ON, age 90. John was born in Ingersoll, ON and raised in Woodstock, ON John joined the Navy in 1952 and traveled the world with various postings to submarines, destroyers and aircraft carriers. John trained as a naval aviator flying fighters, fighter bombers and tracker aircraft. He later trained to fly helicopters and carried out search and rescue missions off the East Coast (HMCS Shearwater). John and his family moved around Canada between Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. He instructed on Tutor jets in Moose Jaw, SK. His last posting was to St. Hubert Que working at Mobile Command. Flying a desk was not in John’s nature so he left the Navy in 1975 and joined Pratt & Whitney Canada (aircraft engine manufacturer) as a test pilot and later became Chief Executive Pilot. He finally retired from flying for good in 1993 at 65 years of age. John and his wife Dorothy settled on Black Lake by Perth Ont in 1997. Sadly Dorothy passed away in 2008. Predeceased by his sister Grace Funnel and his brother Harold Searle. John is sadly missed by his sister Gwen Harrington of Hamilton and his three children and numerous grand and great-grandchildren. His daughter Linda (Paul) McCarthy and David McCarthy (Erica), Sid, Ben and Sam, Kathryn McCarthy (Greg Noel) Abigail and Heidi, Sheila McCarthy, Brendan McCarthy (Emilie), and Kody Moreau of Ottawa. His son John of Montreal. His daughter Susan (Tim) McArthur and Jessica of Toronto. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 31, beginning at 12 noon at the O’Dacre Family Funeral Home, 15 Victoria Street, Perth, with a celebration of John’s life that will follow in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends will meet for a reception immediately after the ceremony. Mom most certainly would have approved of her upbeat and positive funeral service at St. Andrew’s United in Pakenham, which was her church for over 72 years. The joyous musical tribute celebrated a life well lived. Pianist barb Armstrong accompanied the impressive local choir in an outstanding performance. Ollie’s grandson Jason Finner delivered a delightful eulogy touching on many meaningful memories. Beth Portt (nee Machan) from “Cashmere and Rose” created a beautiful flower arrangement for the funeral with additional flowers supplied by Marilyn Snedden for the church. C.R. Gamble Funeral Home provided their expertise, going above and beyond to ensure that all the key details were handled with care. Also thanks to Sharleen Duncan and the volunteer staff at St. Andrew’s, who served a delicious luncheon after the service. A very special thank you goes to Reverend Heather Kincaid, whose loving friendship with Mom shone through in her sincere funeral service. her sense of humour, pronounced spirituality, strong faith, and wise words were appreciated by all.
