Smiths Falls not among basic income recipients BY EVELYN HARFORD
eharford@metroland.com
Ontario basic income pilot locations have been announced, but Smiths Falls is not among the recipient communities. The announcement was made at the LiUNA Station in Hamilton on Monday, April 24. Three regions will take part in the three-year study. Pilots will start in late spring in Hamilton, including Brantford and Brant County; and in Thunder Bay and the surrounding area. The third pilot will start by this fall in Lindsay. The Basic Income Model Ontario has developed will ensure that eligible participants receive: • up to $16,989 per year for a single person, less 50 per cent of any earned income; • up to $24,027 per year for a couple, less 50 per cent of any earned income; and, • up to an additional $6,000 per year for a person with a disability.
The Town of Smiths had sent a delegation to lobby the province earlier in the year. At the time, Smiths Falls' Mayor Shawn Pankow reported that the town had made a compelling case for the town to participate in the pilot. Shortly after the announcement, Pankow took to social media to express his disappointment that the town had not been chosen as a host community and said he hopes that in the not-so-distant future a province-wide basic income program will become a reality. "I still think we're the most appropriate (location for the pilot)," said Pankow following the town's committee of the whole meeting on Monday, April 24. But, said Pankow, with some 400 municipalities in the running there was a "slim margin" that Smiths Falls would have been chosen. "It doesn't change the fact that we have people living below the poverty line – See Pilot page SF5
