Rideau Lakes wades into pool
The Year of the Goat

A turn out of 40 Hub pool supporters to the March 2 budget passing in Rideau Lakes caused the tide to turn around the council table resulting in a one-time $4,000 donation to the facility being approved for this year. Arie Hoogenboom, South Elmsley ward councillor, has supported the pool since its initial request and brought back the funding option this past Monday at the $4,000 mark. “I brought it back at $4,000 to at least get them on the table,” Hoogenboom said. The Hub made an initial request for
$4,200 for a pool cover when only he supported the motion. When they returned the second time for sustainable funding it was for $3,750 a month for six months (this motion lost with a 6-4 vote). Hoogenboom felt the new request was a non-starter as Rideau Lakes has about $50,000 available for organizational support each year. This week’s $4,000 donation was supported 9-1 with the potential of future funding. The Hub pool is grateful for the turn of events and Rideau Lakes’ support, but emphasized their need for ongoing support if they are to really address their See POOL page SF2

The Year of the Goat was ushered in by the Chinese Canadian Heritage Cultural Association Feb. 28 at Holy Trinity Church in Smiths Falls during their Chinese New Year celebration. In addition to a special meal and silent auction, guests were treated to cultural entertainment. There are now 62 properties in Smiths Falls (and counting) who have experienced frozen pipes since last week, according to Don Looby, superintendent of works/utilities with the Town of Smiths Falls. As of Thursday morning, Feb. 26 the frost in the ground had resulted in one frozen water main on Philip Street and one suspected water main break. The water treatment plant is working at low pressure to avoid further breaks. Residents may experience lower than normal pressure. “Crews are working diligently to thaw as many as possible each day,”
Looby said. Municipal staff has been working long days, seven days a week to keep up with demand, but continue to find they are 18 to 20 service calls behind each day. “They need to be commended for the long hard hours they are putting in, all the while, working in extreme cold. I have a dedicated bunch of guys on staff,” Looby said. Anyone who is concerned about pipes freezing, is asked to keep their tap turned on the diameter of a pencil (1/4” stream) at all times until further notice. A town press release states water bills will be estimated from the previous billing cycle during this time period.
