When Kirsty Walker walks out of Heritage House Museum this May many of the precious artifacts and images will be more accessible to the public and primed for this year’s 35th anniversary of the museum and next year’s 150th birthday of a nation. Walker accepted the four-month archival coordinator contract and began to work with museum staff on Jan. 4, 2016. The funds have come from the Documentary Heritage Communities grant program at the Library and Archives Canada, and are being dispensed by the Smiths Falls Historical Society. The contract will focus on improving the museum’s archival cataloguing, storage and public access, while executing a marketing project for the Canada 150 celebrations and a window display for the 35th anniversary. “The first thing I’ve been tackling is catching up with cataloguing recent Stacey Roy/METROLAND acquisitions,” Walker said. This weekend’s Smiths Falls Winter Carnival has a full slate of activities the town hopes will draw not only local residents but also hockey families coming for the Cubtown Tournament. “It gives them an opportunity to experience a little bit of life in Smiths Falls while they’re here,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow. A significant number of events are scheduled to take place inside and outside of the arena facilities, including a Feb. 13 skate with the Senators Spartacat and the Smiths Falls Junior A Bears mascot on the Gerry Lowe Memorial Sens Rink from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. (ice conditions permitting). Other on ice games include “cage” the bear, hoops n’ skate or run and skills n’ thrills. Then at noon bring to the Sens rink tent your favourite cupcake samples for judging (12:30 p.m.) Recognition will be given to the most yummy, most colourful and best winter theme. A number of sporting opportunities will be available on the arena grounds, including the Mulligan Sno Classic sno-golf tournament (1 to 3 p.m.), which will take place beside the youth arena. Clubs will be provided for those who wish to play, but organizers do encourage those with clubs to bring them for this afternoon of

fun. A sno-soccer competition will be getting underway at the same time as sno-golf on the tennis courts. Warm up at the burn barrels where roasting marshmallows will be available and Sparky the fire safety dog will be on hand to talk to kids about safety around flames. Then turn the heat up a little more inside the community centre where the Cubtown tournament will be taking place until Feb.14. Spectators are welcome to attend free of charge. Downtown The annual Lions pancake breakfast at the Legion on Main Street will kick off the day. Plates will be served up from 8 to 11 a.m. with tickets just $6 for adults and $3 for children. Once the kids have a solid meal in their tummies, head down to the Rideau Candy Shoppe at 20 Russell St. E. for their Candy Carnival. Tickets are 65 cents each and will buy you access to traditional carnival games such as ring toss, snare the hare, shoot the snowman, icicle drop, and face painting. Children under 18 will receive two free tickets and a hot chocolate voucher to start them off. The carnival runs much of the day from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Take a break in the afternoon and head down to the library for Valentine’s Day themed stories, crafts and See CARNIVAL page SF3
