He did say the town needed to come up with some type of pedestrian linkage in that area, to which one person suggested tapping into the trade guilds who routinely hold building workshops and complete projects (such as stone bridges) in communities as a learning opportunity. Manhire confirmed the north pedestrian bridge that was slated for work last fall is back on track with footings to be poured this week. The delay was due to a requirement to reengineer the footings to accommodate a watermain. Manhire estimates

Montague considers false alarm bylaw Stacey Roy

Though false alarms in Montague Township are on the decline, the Montague Police Service Board (PSB) feels implementing a bylaw addressing false alarms may help to reduce policing costs. “It’s more about trying to be proactive,” said Reeve Bill Dobson, chair R0013678578
A public gallery of at least 50 people came out to the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre hall Feb. 1 to share their ideas and thoughts on the town’s strategic planning process. Malcolm Morris, CAO thanked everyone for attending and invited them to freely travel from one of seven staffed tables and provide their input and suggestions on the seven plan priorities that will take the town from last year to 2018. These priorities are: develop a Service Sustainability Review, develop a Financial Sustainability Review, branding and marketing, economic development, waterfront development, tourism and a town square. “We have a lot of things to do… we can’t do it alone. We need assistance and we’re asking you to help us,” Morris said. Open house attendees answered that call with a number of suggestions and comments at each of the seven stations. A large crowd gathered around the economic development and waterfront development tables. Art Manhire, manager of community services and Coun. Lorraine Allen managed the waterfront table where interest in the future of the Confederation Bridge was expressed. Manhire confirmed there is no direction on the future of the bridge yet, but the removal of the deck will provide the
installation of the bridge could take place within two to three weeks. Jan Stepniak of Smiths Falls appreciated town staff’s positive approach to the opportunities that lay before the town, including the vacant space available in the industrial park and downtown core. The longtime resident shared some of his own optimism for his community, pointing to the annual Race the Runway event at the airport and the incredible recognition the town receives from star athletes like Brooke Henderson. “Those two things are really the glimmer of hope,” Stepniak said. Morris noted a number of elements in the proposed Strategic Plan 2015-2018, including a desire to balance residential growth with commercial growth and the opportunities to capitalize on future transit options going into the City of Ottawa. “That 900,000 population to the north-east of here is probably our biggest asset,” Morris said. Other action items from the total of 59 represented in the document include a desire to strengthen relationships with the town’s neighbours through collaborative efforts. “The fact is we need each other to survive,” Morris said. Some priorities such as the Service Sustainability Plan and the Financial Sustainability Plan are already underway following council direction. However, Morris did say the feedback

of the PSB. For the last two years the township has sent police officers out to about 117 false alarm calls a year, which represents about 140 billable hours in their OPP contract. Inspector Derek Needham of the OPP did note these calls are trending downwards going into 2016, but felt it is something the township can do to reduce costs with See FALSE ALARMS page SF3
