LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Every year, local food banks are replenished by an outpouring of community love through a 12year-old initiative that has so far grown to benefit 11 communities. During week three of the Hinton Auto Group Build a Mountain of Food campaign hit it out of the park with a whopping 80,000 lbs. of food collected and more than $7,000 in cash donated to the local food bank. This third leg of the sixweek campaign will help support the Smiths Falls Community Food Bank. Teams of volunteers were at four locations including: Andress' Your Independent Grocer (YIG), the Garden Market, Giant Tiger and Food Basics. Of the 80,000 lbs. of food collected during Saturday's campaign, 43,000 lbs. were from these four stores. Dan Andress, YIG owner, aims to sell 100 more bags annually, with a goal of selling 1,200 this year. Colton said the local grocers pre-pack the bags and have them ready to go at the registers to make the process more consumer-friendly. "All the managers of these grocery stores are amazing people to allow us to do what we're doing," said Hugh Colton, organizer and founder of the drive. "Without them, there'd be no mountain of food." Build a Mountain began in Perth 12 years ago, collecting 3,200 lbs. of food in its first year before it grew to include Smiths Falls and nine other local communities. "What we really enjoy is that we can get the food on the shelves and it lasts more than a month," said Colton. "Some of this food will last until April or May." Colton said the generosity of the community is always touching to witness, as Smiths Falls has a substantial need for food bank support.

Submitted/Jim Wright Staff and volunteers at Giant Tiger in Smiths Falls gather around a skid of food donated to the Hinton Auto Group Build a Mountain of Food campaign in Smiths Falls on Nov. 24. Food and cash donations raised as part of the campaign stay in Smiths Falls. Pictured are, left to right, Debbie Seddon (Food Bank Volunteer), Kathy Botham (Food Bank Volunteer), Theresa Bisaillon (Giant Tiger), Hugh Colton (Build a Mountain of Food, kneeling), and Giant Tiger store owner Ross Muir. "I really wish we didn't have to talk about it, but we do, because I don't want anybody to be hungry, and that's just the way it is," he said. "Nobody should be hungry." Last year's campaign supported the food bank to April, said Natalia Soteroff, manager of the food bank in an interview with Hugh Colton, the campaign organizer, just prior to the drive. With the store-to-store challenge, Colton said they put amazing numbers on the food bank shelves. There are also several business owners, and service clubs that also donate to the cause, Colton said, during a live broadcast from YIG Saturday. Two special mentions included the Smiths Falls Civitan Club, with Gib Hodge presenting Colton with $1,000, and Chris and Leigh Craig of RCL Automotive, $1,300 (and their daughter, Roslyn Craig's $300 from her various fundraising efforts throughout the year). "That's the great part of Build a Mountain of Food these young people that are getting involved and will continue to carry Build a Mountain of Food into the future," Colton said. Soteroff sent out a huge

thank you to the many volunteers, including several new volunteers, for their help during the day. Colton reiterated: "Our mission is that nobody, but nobody goes hungry." So far this year, 162,576 lbs. of food has been collected, along with $21,844.66 in cash donations after Saturday's contributions of 86,768 lbs. and $7,049.85 in cash. Next up for Colton and the crew will be the CP Holiday Train event on Nov. 28 when it makes stops in Smiths Falls and in Perth. There is not enough time for him to get to the stop in Merrickville, he said. The CP Holiday Train will feature Terri Clark, Sierra Noble and Kelly Prescott this year. First stop in this year will be at Merrickville for 4:45 p.m., then to Smiths Falls at 6:20 p.m. and Perth at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 is week four of the drive with the campaign in Westport at Kudrinko's from 9 a.m. to noon, then in Elgin at Gordanier's from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday night, the BAM float will be in Perth for the Santa Claus parade at 5 p.m. then they will hustle to Athens for that community's parade, which starts at 7 p.m. – with files from Paulina Hrebacka

Beckwith Reeve Richard Kidd says his council's hands are tied with respect to a proposed cannabis farm in the township, despite residents' concerns. During a planning committee meeting Nov. 12, Kidd noted "there is no legal reason to say no," to a site plan application for an outdoor wholesale cannabis facility at 733 Ferguson Road. The proposal, put forth by Burnstown Farm Cannabis Company Ltd.'s chief executive officer, Mark Spear, would see a 1,034square foot farmhouse constructed on the 50-acre property owned by Ian and Linda Andrews. It would initially be used as a residence and later for office space. Plans also include a 2,500-square foot greenhouse and two 323-square foot storage containers. The operations would use 12 of the 50 acres and grow

approximately 100,000 plants. Kidd said the land's designation is zoned rural, which permits these types of operations. Planner Stephen Closs confirmed in 2014, the provincial and federal governments put pressure on municipalities to update zoning bylaws to allow permissions for medical marijuana facilities. "The Township of Beckwith's council discussed this across a number of public meetings in 2014 and updated the zoning bylaw on June 2, 2015 to include provisions for marijuana facilities," he explained. "These facilities were permitted in four zone designations - rural, agricultural, industrial and rural/industrial - and as mentioned before, this lot is zoned rural." In the township's zoning bylaw, a medical marijuana facility is defined as "a facility licensed by Health Canada to cultivate, process, test, destroy, package and distribute marijuana for medical purposes." " ... A zoning bylaw regulates what can be built on the property and how it can be used, but it cannot regulate to whom a wholesaler or retailer can sell. It's beyond the scope of what zon-

ing can regulate," Closs stated. "For all intents and purposes, the word 'medical' is redundant in the zoning bylaw." The site plan must be approved by council in order for Spear to approach Health Canada for a licence. "This isn't a small undertaking. It can potentially take years to get licensed and it's tough," Spear said at the meeting. He anticipates operations to begin by 2020. And despite reports the company wishes to establish a cannabis spa on the site, at the meeting Spear confirmed it would strictly involve cannabis cultivation. It wouldn't be permitted anyway as on Nov. 6, council passed a motion to opt out of allowing licensed retail of cannabis. "The main reason (the motion was passed) is because residents are so up in arms about the traffic and other concerns," Kidd said. "I understand that (retail sales) could change the area. I don't think growing it could. It's one thing the province has given us power over and we thought we'd be proactive when it's a hot issue in the township." Spear and Burnstown Farm Cannabis Company have plans in the works for a second facility in the township, on McLachlan

Submitted/Furry Tales Facebook Furry Tales Cat Rescue in Smiths Falls was the recipient of $10,000 Aviva funding.

FURRY TALES CAT RESCUE RECEIVES $10,000 AVIVA FUNDING It was a secret worth waiting to reveal as Furry Tales Cat Rescue of Smiths Falls earned the $10,000 Aviva Community Fund. The program, Children, Youth and Families Helping Animals, by Furry Tales, was the initiative that garnered the attention of all who voted. "This children's program was selected as a small idea category winner," said Linda Hewitt, who is the spokesperson for Furry Tales. The idea of the program is to expand on the existing school presentation program to support children and youth in creating awareness and developing projects that will help animals in their community. Children and youth are encouraged to involve their families and the community with their ideas and projects as well. The Aviva Community Fund announces Children, Youth and Families Helping Animals by Furry Tales Cat Rescue has won $10,000 in funding for 2018! Since 2009, Aviva has funded over $9.5 million in local projects, and has supported over 400 charities and

community groups across Canada. For the 10th anniversary of the Aviva Community Fund, $1 million has been earmarked for ideas that bring people together and create meaningful change in local communities. Aviva Canada chose to focus on bringing communities together because building strong communities creates a more welcoming place to live and builds resilience and trust among community members. A total of 50 small idea winners were each selected to receive $10,000 toward their project, and Children, Youths and Families Helping Animals by Furry Tales Cat Rescue received among the highest number of votes from brokers, community members and the public for their idea in Smiths Falls to win funding. "I had the opportunity to participate in a presentation at a local school and it was very rewarding to see the interest it generated in the children that attended. Their interest didn't end at the conclusion of the presentation. The children participated in a

little project to grow cat grass for Furry Tales to use in a fundraising event later. Furry Tales supplied materials and some were donated by a local business. This was a wonderful example of children, teachers, our rescue and a local business all working together to help animals," added Hewitt. "Campaigns like the Aviva Community Fund are successful over the long term because they directly fund local programs, where we also happen to work and live," says Colm Holmes, president and CEO of Aviva Canada. "As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, under the theme of bringing people together, we couldn't be more proud to support ideas - big and small - that will have a lasting impact in their communities." Furry Tales Cat Rescue is located in Smiths Falls and was founded in August 2015 by Donna MacRae. It is a not for profit, registered charity, fosterbased rescue. Our primary goal is to assist cats (older and middle aged) who have been displaced, abandoned or have a high risk of being euthanized in the pound system. We are all about the cats we rescue, and with our amazing volunteers, fosters and adoption partners we are making an incredible difference with over 2,300 cats and kittens adopted since opening in 2015.

NEW ENTRANCE SIGNS COMING TO SMITHS FALLS EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com Signs, signs, everywhere they'll be new signs. Five new signs will be installed at entry points in town: at Lombard Street; Brockville Street; Highway 43 from Perth; Highway 43 from Merrickville; and Union Street. Each sign will feature the logos of Smiths Falls' service clubs and elements of the town's heritage. This is the last piece of work to be commissioned in the process of the town's rebranding that began in 2017. Coun. Chris Cummings said, in light of a comment from a resident about the town "wasting a bunch of money" with the rebranding exercise, that the signage isn't being replaced because of the new branding; it's being replaced because it needed to be replaced, anyway. "We were always going to put new signs up," he said. Council awarded the request for proposal to CGS Signs & Stripes at their Nov. 13 meeting for drop-through acrylic signs, with a solar light for the Union Street location since there's no power hook up there, at a value of $90,252.31. The town opted for the second most expensive option,

2-DECADE STUDY SHOWS 'DRAMATIC' COLONIZATION OF INVASIVE ZEBRA MUSSELS IN RIDEAU RIVER EVELYN HARFORD ehar ford@metroland.com A two-decade study has shown a dramatic colonization of invasive zebra mussels in Rideau River. While the 99 per cent of the native mussels have been depleted in some areas of the river, the local area shows signs of hope for native mussel populations. The highest number of native mussel refuges have been found upstream from Burritts Rapids to Smiths Falls, reported AndrĂŠ Martel, a senior research scientist and malacologist with the Canadian Museum of Nature and lead researcher of the study. It was in the fall of 1990 that Martel first identified zebra mussels in Ottawa's Mooney's Bay. Knowing the

species had taken over waterways in Europe and was rapidly expanding in the Great Lakes, Martel and senior research assistant Jacqueline Madill set out to document its presence throughout the Rideau. The results of the two-decade study, published last month in the Canadian Journal of Zoology, represent the longest-known monitoring study of the invasive species in a small-river system. Invasive zebra mussels have been known in Canadian waterways since they first arrived from Europe into Lake Erie in 1986. The first zebra mussels were identified in the river in 1990, and two decades of monitoring the 100-kilometre waterway reveals some areas where there are hundreds of thou-

sands of individual zebra mussels within a square metre. The zebra mussel originated in the Caspian Sea region of Europe. The tiny invertebrates are highly-efficient filter feeders. Females can produce up to one million eggs per year. Zebra mussels out compete native mussels for food - consuming vast quantities of nutrient-rich plankton that would otherwise be available for other species, including native mussels. Starting in 1993, researchers began monitoring 13 sites along the Rideau River at most locations every year - mainly at canal locks operated by Parks Canada. Each October and November, Parks Canada would draw down the water levels at the locks. With the

Submitted/Dan Smythe In the fall of 2010, two museum volunteers count zebra mussels in quadrats (each 0.5 by 0.5m) on the floor of lock 31, at Smiths Falls. agency's co-operation, Martel and Madill, joined by students and volunteers, would climb down using specially constructed ladders to count and sometimes collect the zebra mussels attached to the exposed walls and bases of the locks. Numbers from the downstream third of the river

close to the National Capital Region showed rapid growth, becoming pervasive by 1996. The growth was exponential, sometimes as high as a 1,000 to 10,000-fold increase over time. The highest densities measured were comparable to the worst-case scenarios reported in the Great Lakes in the

LIGHT IT UP SAFELY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON During the holiday season, it's important to enjoy time spent with family and friends. It is also the time of year where most Canadians are using a lot of electricity with additional Christmas lights on, the furnace running, spacer heaters on, the stove cooking dinner, plugging in your vehicles so they start and all the new gadgets getting plugged in. The Canadian Safety Council offers some safety tips for this winter and holiday season. Whether it's because you were shovelling the snow or pulling too hard on the extension cord, sometimes the cord gets damaged. If your extension cord is damaged at the plug or the sheathing, do not use the cord. The damage may cause you to get an electric shock. Repairing the cord with electrical tape is not recommended and will not ensure that it is safe to use the cord in the long run. Using timers for your outdoor holiday lights is not only a great way to ensure that they are on before you're home, but is also a great way to be environmentally conscious. A timer will also shut off the lights before you go to bed, saving you money on your power bill. You won't even have to leave the comfort of your own home to plug or unplug the lights. Turning off the lights before going to bed prevents the light bulbs from overheating in the night, and setting them on a timer ensures that it's not a task that might slip your mind. Whether it's at home or in the office, outlets can only handle one portable space heater. As soon as you plug in that second one, you'll trip the breaker. Most home outlets are rated for only a single 12-amp or 1,500-watt load. Check your space heater and any other electrical device that you're plugging to ensure it doesn't exceed this rating. Most modern houses have GFCI outlets on the exterior of your home to plug in holiday lights and other electrical equipment. The benefit of a GFCI outlet is electric shock protection for you when using portable cord- and-plug connected electrical equipment in an indoor or outdoor environment. While we're on the topic of GFCI outlets, think of hitting that test and reset button before you plug in your device. You want the GFCI to work to protect you from being electrocuted should there ever be an electrical fault. Consider doing this in the bathrooms in your house and on outside outlets at least once a month or ask your family or guests to test the GFCI before they use the outlet. It's better to ensure the protection is working long before you need it. Enjoy these tips which can help you have a safe and happy holiday season.

HOLIDAY CHICKENS: NOW I HAVE SEEN EVERYTHING WHEN WHAT TO HER WONDERING EYES DID APPEAR, BUT A LIT CHICKEN. KILL ME NOW, WRITES LAURIE WEIR. LAURIE WEIR Column

It was a hot day in May, 2014, when I was cleaning out my grandma's house to make it my own. There was some tidying up around the yard I was also doing, including taking an old and broken, paint-chipped cement chicken to the curb for garbage pickup. I was busting windows not on purpose - when I happened to meet the cute neighbour from Newfoundland as I was heading to the shed with the broken glass. He invited me for dinner.

As I headed to his place that weekend, I was shocked to see Grandma's broken down cement chicken, sitting in his garden of green peppers and tomatoes. We had a good laugh about it, and I didn't think any more of it, until my cute Newfoundland neighbour became my Sweet Baby and moved in with me that fall. Along with him and all his possessions, came the danged broken-down, cement chicken, and it went right back into its original spot on the garden patio ... much to my chagrin. It wasn't long after when Sweet Baby found a couple little chicks at a yard sale. Last summer, he cut down a dead pine tree about three feet from the ground. It was the perfect spot for a flat piece of wood. It became a new home for the chickens. He painted them white, and spray-painted a splash of gold on their beaks and heads.

"What in the name of all that's holy are you doing with those danged chickens?" "You just never mind, I like chickens," he said. "I'm working on a farm, and I might move those solar lights that are over by the lilac bush and make it a shrine." After a recent trip to Mom's one Sunday, it was dark when I got home, but I saw some Christmas lights from a distance. Sweet Baby had gotten on the roof of the house to throw some lights on the spruce tree. Then I had to laugh outrageously! The multicoloured spotlights were shining, reflecting through the trees, and highlighting that danged chicken. Laurie Weir is the news editor for the Perth Courier and Smiths Falls Record News. She can be reached at ljweir@metroland.com when she's not trying to hide the chickens.

SMITHS FALLS LEGION REQUESTS FREE PARKING FOR VETERANS Veterans have given a lot for our freedoms. Now, they're asking for something in return. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 has requested that council approve an exemption from parking fees at metered parking sites in Smiths Falls for all vehicles displaying a valid Ontario veteran's licence plate. "I hope that they will exempt veterans from parking," said Jim Jenkins, president of the legion. "We thought it would be nice for the town to do this for veterans seeing as this is the 100th anniversary of the armistice being signed."

The legion says that making parking free for veterans would be a huge symbolic value to those who have served their fellow citizens. They've asked that this parking exemption be permanent from the time of its approval. "Veterans deserve that as a thanks to their service," said Jen-

kins. Though Jenkins said that modern day veterans haven't seen as much combat as those who fought in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and Afghanistan, veterans who've served with the United Nations have seen tragedy, too. "They've seen some pretty dis-

A local high school wants to give blood in memory of one of their own. Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) staff have adopted the Smiths Falls Mobile Donor Centre on Dec. 5 in honour of the late SFDCI teacher, Kristine MacLaren. In May of 2017, MacLaren, a music and arts teacher at SFDCI, was diagnosed with a leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer originating from smooth muscle. During her treatment, Kristine required close to 40 units of blood. On July 5, at 46 years old, MacLaren passed away at the Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital with her loved ones by her side. The blood donor clinic will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95 located at 7 Main St. E. in Smiths Falls on Dec. 5 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. To book an appointment at the Smiths Falls Mobile Donor Centre, use the GiveBlood App, call 1888-2DONATE or visit www.blood.ca. Those with appointments are encouraged to keep that appointment and, if possible, bring a friend or family member to donate with you.

cy success and participant feedback brought attention to the need for additional support; a prenatal drop-in program was added in 1996. Today Connections is proud to offer a continuum of prenatal and postnatal support services to families in our community. Our goal at Connections is to provide support to families during their pregnancies and in the healthy growth and development of their young children. This is a co-operative effort involving the family, agency services and the community. Connections has four main core programs; The Birth Companion program, Good Food for a Healthy Baby program, the Home Visiting program and the parent and children's play groups program. These programs help to reduce isolation and increase parenting competency. Prenatal support reduces the risk of low birth weights and increases breastfeeding rates. In-

dividual support gives families a sense of security knowing they have someone in the community they can count on and trust resulting in a more positive, less stressful household environment. Practical help, such as food, prenatal vitamins, transportation and advocacy is a major component of the Connections program. This kind of help reduces stress for the parents, leading to better attachment and parent/ child interaction. At times when funding allows, we offer parent education workshops such as Bounce Back and Thrive, SOS or Nobody's Perfect. Through the summer we offer a school readiness program, a group for preschool children going to school in September. Through donation, and much hard work, we offer a back-to-school program in late August. This program gives students in need, a backpack or school bag, lunch kit and school supplies. Connections is a very unique nonprofit agency. We offer not only a variety of support but a progression of support. Participants can move from program to program as their child develops or they can

use more than one program at a time. All participation is voluntary and is parent directed. Our programs are run throughout Lanark County and our Good Food for a Healthy Baby program is also run in Leeds/Grenville. There are no fees for our programs; core funding comes from the federal government, Public Health Agency of Canada (Community Action Program for Children and the Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program). At Connections our goal is to make a difference in the lives of the families we serve. We believe by supporting pregnant women and their partners, they will feel better about themselves, their birth experience and their babies. By supporting a woman, or a woman and her partner through labour may shorten delivery, reducing complications and the need for medical intervention. We embrace the idea that contributing to a parent's physical and mental health, one can positively influence the health of their child. Submitted by Maureen Hampton

FALL FOR THEATRE NIGHT DEC. 7-9 On Dec. 7, 8 and 9, we invite you to enjoy the Fall for Theatre production of a Trio of One-Act Plays by Merrickville's award-winning community theatre group - satisfying audiences for 44 years. The program begins with Rideau Interlude, an original play penned by our own Margaret Shearman, based on an event that she and her husband lived some 20 years ago, when two children appeared on their riverside doorstep, in search of an errant parent and seeking sanctuary from a chaotic family situation. This slice of life drama, directed by Helen Steenburgh, premiered at a private showing in Ottawa and was recently lauded at the Eastern Ontario Drama League One-Act Festival in Kingston, in competition against eight other community

theatre groups. The production received nominations from the adjudicator in six out of 14 award categories. Congratulations are due to our friends at Studio Theatre in Perth for their excellent entry. The second play in the trio, Time Flies, will give theatregoers a brief glimpse into the dating life of two lucky mayflies: in addition to meeting each other, they also get to be featured on television, with commentary by David Attenborough! Come to our pond and enjoy this very short but very funny play written by David Ives and directed by Connie Coleman. Connie advises that, given the subject matter, this play is rated PG. Peter Boire directs our third play of the trio, The Work of Art, by Victoria Dawe. A sculpture is creat-

ed before our eyes as the 'artist' and his next door neighbour discuss the merits of the project - as a gift, a tribute and a work of art. There are laughs and lessons skillfully woven into this unique and interesting play. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 p.m. for the Sunday matinee. Those dates again are Dec. 7, 8 and 9. Tickets are $15, available online at www.merrickvilletheatre.org, in person at Mrs. McGarrigle's Fine Food Shop and the Merrickville Book Emporium, or at the door. Call 613-269-2150 for further information. You can also like us on Facebook and follow the links. Submitted by Andrea Howard, Theatre Night in Merrickville

ZEBRA MUSSELS COLONIZE IN RIDEAU RIVER Continued from page 7

team was picking up significant, though less numerous, counts for zebra mussels in the farthest upstream reaches of the river near Smiths Falls. At the same time, over the past 20 years, researchers also documented a significant loss of native mussels, at some sites observing close to 100 per cent mortality, in areas where the zebra mussels have taken over. Martel said before the invasion of zebra mussels, the Smiths Falls area had the most diverse and plentiful populations of native mussels. "Old Slys is a fantastic site," he said. "Between 1991 and 1993, and before, you would have snorkeled and seen native, freshwater mussels." But as colonies of tiny zebra mussel grow, they effectively "choke" out and smother the larger native mussels. The zebras attach to the native mussels by se-

creting hundreds of byssal threads, which prevent the native species from feeding or reproducing, killing them over a few months or years. "Our native mussels were not equipped to be covered with the zebras," said Martel. "They were dying like crazy, they couldn't breathe or reproduce. They died very fast." The carnage of the zebra invasion can now be seen throughout in the river. "You'll see dead shells by the thousands," said Martel. "It's very sad." But there is good news for the local area. The higher survival rate of native mussels upstream from Burritts Rapids to Smiths Falls may mean that area plays host to a greater number of natural refuges for these native mussel species. At the Old Slys, Andrewsville and Burritts Rapids sites, roughly three quarters of the native mussels have died - showing that more native mussels are surviving

upstream than they are downstream. "We are noticing good news. In some shallow wetlands with softer ground we're noticing surviving mussels," said Martel. "The survivors are good at burrowing." Martel said zebra mussels can't burrow and need fresh water flow to survive. The areas around Smiths Falls have a habitat that's better suited to native mussels who burrow, giving them a better chance to escape the zebra mussels. "That's where the native mussels have a chance," he said. "Some (native species) burrow for weeks or months." These native mussel refuges may provide more clues about what the fate of native populations could be and what could be done to help save them. Martel says more research needs to be done on what it takes to be a survivor. For now, he said, people can help by using the water-

ways responsibly to avoid passing invasive species from one body of water to the next. "It's not a right to drive your car, it's a privilege," he said. "Our waterways should be the same." Martel advises that people should avoid bringing their boats from one watershed to the next without checking it and cleaning it. "If you don't clean it, you're going to introduce things, not just zebra mussels but other aquatic plants, too," he said. "Make sure you don't give them a ride."

MAN'S BODY RECOVERED FROM SAND LAKE Police recovered the body of a missing Westport man from Sand Lake on Monday, Nov. 26. Officers of the Rideau Lakes OPP detachment began searching for Scott McPherson, 33, on Nov. 24 when he was reported missing while snowmobil-

ing in the area. The OPP's emergency response team (ERT), the OPP snowmobile ATV vessel enforcement team (SAVE), Rideau Lakes Fire Service with ATV support, and OPP unmanned aerial support (UAS) participated in the search.

The OPP urges everyone to stay off the ice, whether snowmobiling or on foot. No ice is "safe ice." Underlying water currents or air pockets can create thin ice, even in the coldest temperatures. Snowmobilers can't see this until it's too

late. If it can't be avoided, check ice conditions beforehand, wear a floater suit, carry ice picks and make sure they are accessible. Always be prepared and travel with safety equipment in the event of an emergency.

Photo submitted by police Scott McPherson was last seen on Nov. 23. Police believe he went missing when he was snowmobiling.

MONTAGUE PUBLIC STUDENTS PLANT 600 FLOWER BULBS IN SCHOOL GARDEN The Eco Team at Montague Public School in Smiths Falls planted 600 flower bulbs in their school garden. These flower bulbs were given to them by Bulbs4Kids, a program that is allowing the school to become familiar with flower bulbs and the world of nature in a way that is also a lot of fun. When the tulips, crocuses, daffodils and grape hyacinths start blooming early in the spring, this school garden will be bursting with colour. Kathleen Lang, from the Smiths Falls Horticultural

Society, assisted the school with planting. She also is responsible for nominating the Eco Team at Montague to receive a $400 grant from the 2018 REAL Action Grant. The school purchased a dump truck full of soil with the funds. Montague Public School was awarded the gold level by the Ontario EcoSchools team in 2017-2018. Montague Public School signed up last spring to receive a flower bulb kit. Montague is one of 84 schools who signed up for the kit, across Canada.

LANARK COUNTY WOMAN SEEKS TO SET UP TINY HOME COMMUNE DESMOND DEVOY desmond.devoy@ metroland.com A former Perth resident is hoping to set up a tiny homes commune. Jordan Naomi Chambers, who now lives in Almonte, is working on a business plan to buy up some land where tiny homes and even old shipping containers, converted into residences, could be set up for people dealing with environmental sensitivities. The community would also be a place for residents to learn life skills, and even grown food, some of which could be donated to area food banks, a "people feeding people farm," she explained during an interview at the North Market Café in Almonte on Tuesday, Nov. 20. "You get the time to recoup in an (environmentally) clean home." She is looking at land in either Lanark Highlands Township or Mississippi Mills to set up this community, and she sees it as a chance to compliment institutions like homeless shelters. "We do need shelters, in the short term," she stressed. But for a lot of the

people she is looking to help, getting them back to the land would help them heal from their environmental illnesses, which would most likely then lead to better mental and physical health outcomes. As an ex-contractor herself, "I can tell certain things about houses," such as what works, and what does not. She would like to see the laws around where tiny homes can be placed, because she admittedly that she naively "thought I could put a bunch of tiny houses on a small plot of land." It's not that easy, and "laws absolutely need to be changed for this." She already has about $4,000 on a GoFundMe page for this initiative. Perth problems "I'd been screaming for help for six years," when she lived in Ottawa. The most that ever seemed to be done there was that her name would be written down on a notepad at Ottawa City Hall, and nothing was ever done. "Nobody was listening," she said. She moved from place to place about 12 times before landing in Perth, losing two pets from what she said were environmentally unsafe apartments. A Realtor

THE ISSUE: HOUSE PRICES ARE RISING LOCAL IMPACT: HOMELESS YOUTH SAY ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND HOUSING

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Jordan Naomi Chambers stands on Mill Street in Almonte, at Centennial Square, on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 20. she had been working with in Ottawa told her about an apartment that had opened up in Perth in the vicinity of St. John Catholic Elementary School. The apartment had come on the market because the lady had died of lung cancer. "I got rid of everything, donated everything to an Indigenous youth shelter," she said, and began her move within 24 hours of getting the word. "We got there while they were still painting. One thing I noticed was mould all over the walls. I didn't say anything. They (the painters) painted over it."

Within a short time after she moved in, her dog, a miniature poodle, began scratching himself, and she developed breathing issues. A portion of the ceiling came in one day, bringing down mould and asbestos on her, making her black out. Both in Perth and in Ottawa, she was dealing with blackouts, hives, insomnia (being unable to sleep for 17 days at one stretch), paranoia and a loss of appetite. "I was afraid to eat because of what was going on with my body," she said. She was even confined to a wheelchair at one point.

There was no heat either in her place, and she used the oven to heat her apartment, until that broke too.

Moving out She soon moved out into a tent in a friend's backyard near the Perth fairgrounds. "There was a safety in that backyard," she said. In time, she saved up money to buy a second-hand car, and lived in that. "It was roof over my head," she said. "The longer I was outside, the better I felt. I felt good." She now has a new place in Almonte, "and I am do-

ing much better ... It's a very nice place. No complaints," she said. Throughout her experience, she got to see firsthand the challenges women living with housing insecurity face. "This is a problem for women," she said. Some men would invite her to stay with them in their spare room, and then "they kept approaching me for sex," she said. At one point, she had to barricade the door to keep one persistent pervert out of her room. "I don't want anyone to go through what I've gone through." While she may not have been heard in Ottawa, that changed once she moved to Lanark County.

Cornerstone Landing support

Desmond Devoy/Metroland Terrilee Kelford, executive director of Cornerstone Landing Youth Services, speaks with Perth town hall's director of development and protective services, before the start of Perth town council's commitee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 11. were drafting the bylaw. Away from Lanark County however, Kelford said she is worried about the "systemic structures that keep people out of affordable houses." For example, "new, tiny homes, banks and CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation) will not finance them ... you can't get a mortgage." Chambers' idea for a tiny homes commune might be one solution to help with the housing crisis, for people who might have mental health or environmental issues. For example, people suffering from paranoia and social

anxiety might not like to live in an apartment building, where "you can hear every conversation your neighbours are having, you can smell every meal they are cooking," she said. As such, a tiny home might be right for them, whereas a young person without these issues would feel more comfortable in an apartment. Everyone, she feels, has "a right to live in a home of their choice." Kelford did speak with Chambers last week, and "Jordan's case is a perfect case" of housing insecurity, she said. "We need towns to be proactive on this."

Cornerstone Landing Youth Services is "definitely interested in the tiny homes community" idea, said executive director Terrilee Kelford during a telephone interview on Monday, Nov. 26. In fact, her organization tried to get a similar idea off the ground in Smiths Falls off the ground earlier this year, asking the town council to "gift" them some land where they could put down about four tiny homes. However, that would require a site specific zoning amendment, so, she returned to council and asked them to change their bylaws regarding tiny homes across town. "We need the town to be proactive about this," said Kelford. About 60 per cent of her youth housing cases come from Smiths Falls and while the town's economic prospects continue to grow, with increased prosperity comes a rise in housing costs. "This is great. We all want development," said Kelford, of the town's sudden burst of good fortune, but this has a direct impact on the most vulnerable who can barely sustain housing in the private market as it is. While the recent municipal elections have seen the issue slow down around council chambers, she is hoping that the matter will be revisited once new councils are sworn in in early December. Even so, Tay Valley Township has taken the lead, allowing tiny homes to be placed there - in fact, they even sought out Kelford's input while they

"I've got more response from the rural areas," she said. This past August, she contacted Perth Town Hall, and got in touch with Mayor John Fenik in August. "I dropped to my knees in front of Fenik in his office," said Chambers. She had received a call back from his office an hour after she visited the town hall. Fenik heard her out, and even went to Gatineau, Que., to look at a tiny house with her. "He stepped up and he listened," she said. "He took time and I appreciate that." Keeping a positive attitude has proved to be instrumental in her struggle to break free. "I've stayed positive through all of this ... There is no point in anger," said Chambers. "I do have my off days. I am physically and emotionally exhausted from the summer." But in the end, "it's not about me. It's about the end game now," of a tiny home commune.

CANNABIS FARM GAINS SUPPORT FROM BECKWITH COUNCIL Continued from page 3

Road near the Montague border. Robin Garreau, who lives on Ferguson Road with her family, said she is concerned about odour from the plants and the lack of regulations surrounding these types of operations.

"What research have you undertaken to study the effect of the noxious odours in proximity to our homes?" she questioned. " ... Will it cause an unbearable odour and have a catastrophic effect on my property value?" She suggested the township create a bylaw for noxious odours, the way they do

for noise pollution. "As councillors who live in this community and make decisions on behalf of the constituents' welfare, you have a duty to refuse this decision or at least defer it until the proper research is done." Spear said there should only be an odour from plants for three weeks a year. "It's really quite mini-

mal. It's not like you think. It's not like living next to a hog farm or where liquid manure is spread ... Connoisseurs go crazy for this stuff. They love the smell of it. It's certainly not a noxious odour or harmful to your health." Garreau highlighted the example of a cannabis greenhouse operation in

Aldergrove, Ont., by Canopy Growth Corporation where people's "clothes, houses and cars smell of weed." She added that on Sept. 24 of this year, town council in Kingsville, Ont. placed a moratorium on all new marijuana zoning applications until they are enshrined in its Official Plan and zoning bylaws.

Kidd said Beckwith doesn't have that option because a marijuana facility is already a permitted use. To alleviate some of the concerns, the planning committee included the site plan stipulation that if Health Canada comes up with conditions for outdoor facilities, they must be applied to this property. Jingle bells, Jingle bells! Jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride In a one horse open sleigh! A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride, And soon Miss Fannie Bright

Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, Misfortune seem’d his lot He got into a drifted bank, And we, we got up-sot. (Repeat Chorus) Now the ground is white, Go it while you’re young, Take the girls tonight, And sing the sleighing song. Just get a bob-tailed nag, Two forty for his speed, Then hitch him to an open sleigh, And crack! you’ll take the lead. (Repeat Chorus)

FALL FOR THEATRE NIGHT IN MERRICKVILLE DEC. 7-9 theatre groups.

On Dec.

NEIL DOEF ENJOYING LIFE AT PRINCETON FOUR YEARS AFTER SPINAL CORD INJURY LAURIE WEIR ljweir@metroland.com Life has been all about hockey and university for Neil Doef of Smiths Falls, now in his sophomore year at Princeton University. The 21-year-old said he was appreciating some downtime for the American Thanksgiving when reached by phone in New Jersey on Nov. 21. "It's been good. Definitely enjoying it here at Princeton," he said. The Ivy League school honoured its commitment to Doef in 2014 after a spinal cord injury ended his hockey career. He has been part of the men's hockey team since he arrived. "I don't necessarily have a specific role with the team," he said. "It's more like being part of the team, being around the guys during games and practices, coming on the road for games as

well. Especially this year, it's been a lot of fun." Last year, the Princeton Tigers won the ECAC conference and made it to the NCAA tournament, losing to Ohio State in the first round. "Considering what they were expecting, it was a big accomplishment for sure," Doef said of last season's results. "Starting off this year, they've been nationally ranked pretty much every week this year, so in the top 20 and they're continuing to improve and get better every day." Doef said he's just one of the guys though, but if there is an opportunity to give some advice, he does. "If I see something I'll let them know. For the most part, I'm just enjoying the whole team atmosphere, for sure," he said. Doef said he is still undecided about his major, which he will have to choose next year.

FEDERAL ELECTION

MEET YOUR CANDIDATES FOR THE LEEDS-GRENVILLE-THOUSAND ISLANDS AND RIDEAU LAKES BYELECTION A byelection will be held Monday, Dec. 3 for the vacant member of Parliament Leeds-GrenvilleThousand Islands and Rideau Lakes seat, formerly held by the late Gord Brown. Get to know your four candidates in profiles below.

Michael Barrett Conservative party I'm Michael Barrett and I live in Leeds-GrenvilleThousand Islands and Rideau Lakes with my wife Amanda and our four children. Following my service in the Canadian Armed Forces, Amanda and I chose to make our home and raise our children in the place where our family has deep agricultural and community roots, and a heritage we treasure. Community life and

public service have always been important to me. In 2014 I was elected councillor for the village of Spencerville and surrounding agricultural area in the municipality of Edwardsburgh Cardinal. Along with representing my ward and bringing forward the concerns of my neighbours and constituents, I served as chair of the public works, environmental service and facilities committee of the whole. For the past five years, I have been involved with the Conservative Electoral District Association, serving most recently as president. This afforded me the opportunity to work closely with my friend and mentor, the late MP Gord Brown, co-ordinating meetings with farmers, small business owners,

hunters, anglers, landowners, seniors and youth. I have been fortunate to meet so many people across our beautiful riding and have become familiar with their interests, concerns and aspirations for their communities. Once elected, I will hold issues-based meetings open to the public throughout the riding. I will maintain a constituency office in Brockville, and satellite constituency offices in Kemptville, Gananoque and Westport. I will work with our 13 municipal councils to advance the needs of our communities in Ottawa. I serve on municipal council because I care about our community. I served alongside the finest men and women in our Canadian Forces because I love our country. I served

as the Conservative association president, because I am a principled Conservative. I stand for balanced budgets, for local infrastructure investments, for secure borders, for a strong Canadian identity and free trade. I support investment in clean energy technologies, but not a carbon tax. I support law abiding gun owners, and believe in stiff penalties for gang members. With extensive experience and the energy to serve the people of our great riding, I would be honoured to receive your support on Dec. 3.

Mary Jean McFall Liberal party Mary Jean McFall is a devoted community leader with a proven record of public service, and the Liberal candidate for Leeds Grenville - Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. As a community advocate, lawyer, mother, grandmother, and former Brockville city councillor, Mary Jean has shown her deep passion and determi-

nation to make a real difference for families in our region. Born and raised here, Mary Jean has deep roots in our region's agriculture sector, serving as a Director of Egg Farmers of Ontario and working as General Counsel to Burnbrae Farms. Most recently, she served as the Chief of Staff to Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. She has a unique understanding of our evolving local economy, and she will be a hardworking member of Parliament for all of us in Leeds - Grenville - Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. "For me, it's all about service, it's all about ser-

vice to my community," she said in a promotional video. " ... If you want to have things in your community, you have to contribute to your community. The rules are made by those who show up. If you have a seat at the table, you get to stick your hand up to vote, and help make things happen." Our community needs a trusted and experienced voice in government who will be a champion for a growing economy and stronger middle class, and Mary Jean McFall will never stop working hard to build a better future for families in Leeds - Grenville - Thousand Islands

She was involved in setting up local forestry enterprises and in developing the first Aboriginal-owned forestry marketing co-operative in Canada. She has supported and advocated for sustainable use of natural resources through organizing, research, writing, advocacy and regional and national conferences. As the former Executive Director of the National Aboriginal Forestry Association (NAFA), Lorraine worked on national and international forest policy. et. From failed crops to increased natural disasters, the cost of continuing to kick the can down the road is too great to ignore. We need to invest in clean energy now and institute initiatives that keep the onus for pollution prevention on the worst offenders. Under Harper, application processing wait times rose significantly for our veterans. They gutted that department, closing local access offices and laying off staff. Trudeau campaigned specifically on fixing the problem in the 2015 general election. Instead, he has done little to help over the past three years, even leaving money earmarked for our vets unspent. The men and women who have served our country deserve the very best service from our government. That's not what they've received from both the red and blue camps, and I'm determined to advocate loudly for that to change. Our vets and their families should get timely access to the benefits they've earned - anything less shows a lack of respect for their sacrifice. In this election and those in the future, I ask you to really consider what's being offered by each party. Platforms, leaders and priorities change. Don't just vote for a colour by habit; make your candidate earn your support! Think of your values and your hopes for the future. I hope to represent those for you in the House of Commons on Dec. 3.

Michelle Taylor NDP I'm Michelle Taylor and I'm running to be your next MP. My husband Paul and I are raising our four children in the beautiful village of Athens. With experience in various sectors like natural resources and the first response medical field, I'm the best choice as I have a strong work ethic and I'm deeply committed to improving areas of our communities where help is needed most. We have a large agricultural segment in our riding. For their sake and that of us all, we need to buckle down and take climate change seriously as a country. Environmental responsibility is seriously lacking from both the Conservatives and the Liberals when we should be putting deliberate focus on reducing our damage to the plan-

There's a lot more than cannabis growing in Smiths Falls these days. As the community celebrates the end of a monumental year, the town is booming in more ways than one: The increase in real estate and construction development that has reached record highs. The impetus behind these increases lies primarily with investment from Canopy Growth Corporation (Tweed), and the wealth of jobs created by the cannabis giant since settling in Smiths Falls in 2014. "Over the past four years, we've seen tremendous growth in our community," said Jennifer Miller, manager of economic development and tourism. "A great deal of that growth can be attributed to Canopy Growth Corporation's confidence in investing in our community, but there are other factors at play here as well." Those other factors include resettlement opportunities following the relocation of the Department of National Defence to the west end of Ottawa, a complete rebranding, and an increased investment in services and economic development in Smiths Falls, all of which has helped push the community into becoming a sought-after destination for relocation in eastern Ontario. The proof is in the numbers for Smiths Falls: Between 2013 and 2015, construction values fluctuated between $3.5 million and $6 million annually, on average. In 2016, those numbers increased to $9 million, and then jumped $30 million in 2017, before reaching an alltime high of $161 million in the first three-quarters of 2018 alone, a more than 400 per cent increase from the previous year. The growth in construction value not only means increased assessments for the municipality, it also is an indicator of the confidence developers and investors have placed in the community's future

growth. Park View Homes is one developer that has seen first-hand the effects of the recent growth in the community. Park View spent nearly 10 years developing the Ferrara Meadows subdivision in Smiths Falls, which reached capacity in 2018. Ken Shelley, vice-president of asset management for Park View Homes, explained that, until recently, Park View had been building only a couple of homes in Smiths Falls each year, but that demand for new housing has increased exponentially. In 2017, Park View built 14 new homes in Ferrara Meadows, and an additional 13 homes in Maple Ridge, an adjoining subdivision. Park View Homes is now entering into the first phase of a brand-new subdivision, Bellamy Farms, a 50-acre development that will see an additional 265 townhomes and one-story bungalows, along with at least one apartment building. More than 60 homes will be part of the first phase of development, with an expectation of completion within two years, and an increase of more than $18 million in construction value. Park View has also taken on the renovations of the Smiths Falls architectural icon, Hotel Rideau, to create 25 one-and-two-bedroom residential units and three ground-floor commercial units, with an anticipated construction value of $3.5 million. Shelley explained that he would expect this increase in development in Smiths Falls to continue for the foreseeable future. "Canopy Growth Corporation is the biggest driver for what's happening in Smiths Falls," he said. "It has had a ripple effect. They're hiring people, which puts a demand for housing, and then there's more demand for retail and services. We're feeling the effects of this in a good way for sure." The increase in construction has seen a corre-

sponding increase in the local real estate market. According to Rob Garvin, a RE/MAX Affiliates sales representative who has spent roughly 10 years selling homes in the Smiths Falls and surrounding areas, the real estate market in Smiths Falls is booming. "This is definitely a sellers' market, and we've seen quite an increase in price over the last few years," he said. There are a few factors that Garvin looks to for an idea of the state of the housing market in Smiths Falls, and one of those is the number of homes he's been selling each year, along with selling price, and renewed development in the community as a whole. Garvin confirmed the number of homes he sells in a year is "definitely up" and that the kind of sales he's making have been impacted, with competitive opportunities arising that have been previously unseen in Smiths Falls and area. "Some properties aren't even hitting the market, they sell before it gets to MLS," he said. "Properties are also selling higher than their list price, which I've never seen in Smiths Falls in the 10 years I've been in business." Residential and multiunit commercial properties are "selling overnight" according to Garvin, and development in the community is at a record high. The reason behind the boom, according to Garvin, not only comes from Canopy Growth Corporation bringing new employees to the community, but it's also as a result of the relocation of the Department of National Defence headquarters to the west end of Ottawa, and a "publicity buzz" that has highlighted the advantages of living in an up and coming community like Smiths Falls. (Nana, Mum), died peacefully in Victoria General Hospital November 7th, 2018 at the age of 93. Joan was admitted the day before, after a fall in her beloved home at Jeskin Aerie Assisted Living. Left with a fractured pelvis the doctor felt would heal in time, her death was unexpected and likely from cardiac arrest. Surrounded by family just hours before she passed on, Joan shared many stories from days gone by in her typical cheerful manner. Joan often expressed gratitude for living a long and happy life with few regrets. In those last few hours she focused on family and reminded us to “never forget to cross your t’s and dot your i’s.” She had no unfinished business. Born October 14th, 1925 in Duncan BC, Joan grew up mostly in Victoria. One night in 1947, at the Roller Bowl in Victoria, she met a young sailor from Royal Roads. Three months later, at age 22, she married Stanley Mitchell and soon afterwards Joan and her sailor moved to Halifax NS, to begin raising a family. Joan was the quintessential Navy Wife: ready, steady, resourceful, loving and strong willed. She had to be: raising 3 boys and a girl, much of the time alone while Stanley was at sea. The family lived in Halifax, Ottawa, Victoria and Burlington. In retirement Stan and Joan lived at their Otty Lake cottage, Mission Texas, Saudi Arabia and Victoria. The two of them were warmly social and made many friends everywhere they went. Joan/Mum/Nana was predeceased by Stanley in 2005 and youngest son Bryan in 2011. She is survived by children: Rodney (Heidi), Bruce, Robyn (Gary), grandchildren: Victoria (Steven), Heather (David), Kathleen (Shayne), William (Allyce), great Grandchildren James and Chloe, sisters-in-law Evelyn and Audrey and nieces: Leslie, Joy, Debbie, Tracey, Nancy, Erica and Ingrid. The family offers heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Jesken Aerie for the warm friendship and nurturing care that enriched Joan’s last years. Also to the staff at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital for the compassion and professionalism they have shown to our Mum and Nana both of late and over the years. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held in Victoria at a later date and next summer at Otty Lake. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Jesken Aerie of M’akola Housing Society in Victoria BC, or The Great War Memorial of Perth District Hospital Foundation in Perth, Ontario. REASON FOR MOTHER'S TEARS REMAINED A MYSTERY WORDS OF JOY AND SADNESS FILLED HER DIARIES, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

The two coal oil lamps sat on the table, one at either end, giving off a small circle of light, that barely lit that corner of the kitchen. Over the table, hanging from the ceiling, was the Coleman lamp that was only lit when we had company. The little fragile wicks were too expensive to waste on family evenings only. I could sense that all was not well. Mother was hunched over her diary, and I could see the pencil moving quickly, as if she had to get something down

in a hurry. Everyone but Father was sitting around the big pine table, busy with our own amusements, as we did every night after everything had been redded up. Audrey and I were thumbing through the Eaton's catalogue, but I wasn't paying attention. My eyes were on Mother. Often she would write, pause a bit, and look up at the ceiling as if searching for the next word to write in her diary. But that night, there was no pausing. She was writing quickly, and once a page was filled, she flipped it over, and started anew. She wasn't really writing in a diary. It wasn't like the one Santa had brought me for Christmas ... a little red satin cover book with a gold clasp and its very own key. No, Mother's diaries were scribblers bought at the one-cent sale at the drugstore. The covers looked like black oilcloth,

and as soon as one was filled, it was put into the kitchen cupboard, not to be touched by anyone but Mother. I had no idea what she wrote, but scarcely a night went by that she wasn't bent over her diaries at the kitchen table. That night, she seemed a million miles away. Often, she would write a few words, and then chuckle to herself. This night was different. Then I saw a tear roll down her cheek. She brushed it away quickly and kept at her frantic writing. What could she be putting down on paper? If it was upsetting, why did she write it in the first place? My sister noticed it, too, but said nothing. I shifted on the bench, and Audrey seemed to know that I was about to ask Mother if there was something wrong. Audrey put her hand on my arm, and I knew she was telling

me to say nothing. The frantic writing went on. My brothers were too busy at their own projects to take notice, and Father, sitting by the stove with the Ottawa Farm Journal, had fallen asleep. It was just my sister and I who could see the gentle tears on Mother's face. Audrey made a big production of turning the pages of the catalogue and in a voice that was more shrill than usual, began pointing out things we could buy if money was no object. I tried to be interested, but it was so unusual for Mother to ever shed a tear, that my heart was heavy, and it was all I could do to sit quietly and say nothing. Then the old CPR clock over the icebox struck, and it was time for bed. My three brothers raced for the stairs, Father roused from his chair at the stove, and Audrey closed the catalogue and nudged me

away from the table. Mother closed her diary and put her opened hands on its cover and just sat there looking around the kitchen, almost as if she was seeing it for the first time. When I went to bed, I couldn't put out of my mind what I had seen at the kitchen table. What had Mother written that had caused her to shed a tear? Audrey wouldn't talk about it and told me not to worry about it. Mother would be fine, she said. The next morning, when I came down for breakfast, there was Mother making porridge at the Findlay Oval. She was whistling, as she often did while working around the kitchen. What had caused her sadness the night before? Whatever it was, she had tucked it away and taken on another day on the farm which had become her home after many years of

DANUBE MEANDERS THROUGH 10 EUROPEAN NATIONS JEFF MAGUIRE WRITES ABOUT A VISIT TO THE PICTURESQUE OLD TOWN OF ULM JEFF MAGUIRE Column

There is something about the Danube River that makes it a favourite sightseeing stop for people touring Europe. Given the early onset of winter here I must admit that thinking about an afternoon stroll along the "Blue Danube" is particularly uplifting! The river isn't hard to find. The Danube flows for 2,850 kilometres (1,770 miles) and meanders through 10 countries, more than any other river in the world. The source of

the Danube River is located in the small German city of Donaueschingen, just north of the border with Switzerland. Kathleen and I have visited Donaueschingen during our time in Germany. It is a picturesque place set in a valley among the low mountains of the southern Black Forest. In the company of our good friends and longtime travel companions Frank and Wendy LeBlanc, we drove to Donaueschingen on a Saturday. The town's market is a bustling place which we thoroughly enjoyed touring. The main reason for our visit was to see the source of the Danube. Unfortunately the actual viewing site, located on the grounds of the local palace, was undergoing renovations and was offlimits to visitors at the time. However it is a major tourist attraction and signage directed us to the

local museum where a "temporary source" had been set up. This has become an "injoke" with the four of us. We laugh every time we think about it. Because the "source of the Danube" was actually just a raised display case in the middle of the floor with a viewing port at the centre. Visitors could look through the port and into a rather deep passage resplendent with flashing lights. At the bottom was a blue "water flow" which, temporarily at least, purported to be the river source. With apologies to the good people of Donaueschingen, it was pretty hokey actually! Our visit was in the fall of 2013. Frank and Wendy have been back more recently and they say the newly rebuilt official source of the Danube ("Donau" in German) is looking pretty spiffy these days. While planning our re-

cent fall vacation in Germany, France and Switzerland Wendy asked if we would be interested in spending a day and a night in the city of Ulm which is located on the Danube. The city of 125,000 is just over an hour northwest of Munich where we began our excursion in late September. We enthusiastically agreed! Ulm is in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. The rivers Blau and Iller are tributaries of the larger Danube which also flow through the city. Most of Ulm, including the picturesque old town, hugs the left bank of the

Danube. On the other side of the Danube is the twin city of Neu-Ulm (population 50,000) which is in the state of Bavaria. The medieval city wall has been rebuilt and runs along the Danube, offering beautiful views along the river and across it to Bavaria. Behind the city wall, in the old town, are some wonderfully rebuilt half-timbered buildings which are a hallmark of Germany. Sadly an Allied bombing raid in December 1944 resulted in the destruction of 80 per cent of the medieval city centre. Some buildings were painstakingly restored al-

though much of the area was rebuilt in 1950s and 1960s style. If you are looking to stroll along the Danube there is no better place to do it than in picturesque Ulm. FIRE DEPARTMENT Every year in Ontario, tragic fatal fires occur during the holiday season. I urge you to take a few minutes to protect yourself and your family. Test your smoke alarms to make sure they are in good working order and change the batteries if necessary. There’s nothing more appealing on a cold winter’s night than a blazing fire place and the warm glow of candles. But open flame can be an invitation to disaster. Please treat fire with respect this holiday season. Never leave your fireplace unattended and always use a fireplace screen. Don’t burn wrapping paper or ribbons in your fireplace. uary, he will have his final exams. This year, Doef is taking French, geoscience, microeconomics, and a basic civil engineering course. He said the courses he's taking right now are not too difficult, but there is still a lot of work to do, especially when juggling hockey.

HEALTH UPDATE Health wise, Doef ditched his leg brace almost two years ago and he just goes with the walking pole, which provides some stability. "Still not sure when I'll get rid of the pole, but maybe sometime in the future." Overall, he said he's doing well. With the four-year anniversary of his on-ice collision approaching in a few weeks, he said he still thinks of that day. "It's kind of crazy," he said of the passage of time. "At times it feels like four years, but at other times it seems like it hasn't been that long. It just depends on the day. But it has been crazy that it's been four years since it happened." Is he haunted by memories of the on-ice collision that left him paralyzed on Dec. 14, 2014? "I don't think I would say that," he said. "I have

definitely come a long way since I got hurt. I am happy with the way things have turned out and happy with all the progress I've made. From time to time I think about that day, and what happened. How can you not? It was such a major life event. I definitely think about it from time to time." As for physiotherapy, he had some sessions this summer when he was home in Smiths Falls, but not at Princeton. "Things have been pretty busy," he said. "But I try to do whatever I can when I have some time." Doef said he gets home often, including in October, at Christmas and for spring break. He was home all summer as well. Seeing the town growing since he's been away has been positive, he said. "There's always something changing when I get back home - whether it's the Tweed factory getting bigger, or the new St. James' school which is around the corner from my house. It's been interesting to see all the changes that have happened and it's always neat seeing it when I get back there." Doef is also a longtime friend of LPGA superstar Brooke Henderson. The two are the same age, attended the same elementary and high schools in Smiths Falls, and often can be seen hanging out

through social media when they get a chance to get together - which isn't that often. "In the summer we went to Chicago to watch her play the KPMG tournament, but that was the only tournament we went to this summer," Doef said. "In the beginning of September, the school year, she came down here for a little bit."

HOMETOWN STRONG Doef said he still gets messages from home, as support remains strong. "It's been good," he said. "People check up with me and see how I'm doing text me or message on Facebook. It's always nice to get those messages." This personable young man doesn't realize that he's been a role model to so many. When asked about that, he takes a moment. "I just did what I had to do. You know, work hard, try to get better, and if I'm inspiring people because of it, then it's an honour and hopefully I can inspire them to do great things as well," he said. Does he hope to have something to do with hockey in the future? "Maybe not coaching, but having something to do with the team down the line," he said, would be nice. "Not just sure what, but being involved in hockey is something that definitely interests me."

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY HOURS Municipal Office will be closed Monday December 24 at noon and re-open Wednesday January 2 at 8:30 a.m. Laurie Weir/Metroland St. John Catholic High School teacher Dave Peters thanks those for organizing Relay for Life in this file photo from 2017. 42 kilometres." Peters said he has run marathons before; it's the altitude that will be a challenge. "I'm reading a book on breathing - trying to work on duplicating higher altitude breathing," he said, as he needs to reduce the amount of oxygen he needs to accomplish this marathon. "There is 12 days of trekking and acclimatization. It's a designed itinerary to get to base camp. There are designated spots to get to, assuming weather and everything co-operates," Peters explained. His leave of absence through the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario was contingent upon Peters' progress reports during his trek. "We're going to promote Relay for Life," he said. "I'm not sure how often I'll be able to get online, but the idea is to have a daily blog." The school's Relay event will be held May 10, 2019, and then he will leave soon after to hit the Mount Everest challenge. "We are trying to attract more participation from Grade 7/8 students," he said. He said he wants to appreciate being healthy, "and to be able to take on the challenge. That's the reminder I get every year at Relay, how fortunate I am, how we all are, to do something like this."

Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is an international high altitude adventure sports event held from Mt. Everest Base Camp, criss-crossing the high Sherpa trails of Khumbu valley on May 29 every year. This event celebrates the historical ascent on Mt. Everest by late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953. Runners from around the world can take part in such categories as the 60-kilometre extreme ultra, 42kilometre full marathon or the 21-kilometre half marathon. To support Peters in his journey, you can make a donation to his GoFundMe page (until his Relay for Life page is set up, at which time he will transfer donations to the Cancer Society page). On the fundraising page, Peters has a goal of $10,000 - but that's not for his trip, it's an amount he wants to raise for the Cancer Society. He's paying his own way to Nepal. "The ultimate goal of this would be to get every student at St. John to participate in Relay for Life," he said. "Now that we do it as a day time event, it allows kids who want to participate throughout the day, that opportunity to do so." Visit https://davidpeterssjchs.wixsite.com/everestmarathon to keep upto-date on his event.

St. John Catholic High School is hosting its annual Relay for Life May 10, and this year, teacher Dave Peters has a lofty goal. He said he wants to get more students involved to help raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. But how do you top what these people have accomplished over the past 17 years - they have raised $775,000. Each year for the past several, they have averaged $50,000. This year, to get his students revved up for Relay, Peters is heading to Nepal to take part in the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon. "The goal is to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society through Relay for Life, ultimately inspiring our students to get involved and maybe go a little further in their fundraising efforts," Peters said during Grade 12 health and nutrition class on Nov. 22. An interesting mix of KD was cooking, with a side of protein bars. "Also, this is to celebrate the accomplishments of this school over the years." The challenge every year is to motivate people, he said. "Usually our kickoff rally does a great job; our guest speakers really motivate the students," Peters said. "The last few years, I felt like we needed to look at something bigger, and that's how this came about." With the student population decreasing - the school was around 900 at its highest, and now is about 400 students - it's getting harder to raise funds like they have in the past. Trevor Choffe, the fire chief in Perth, is going with Peters as his "support crew." "Last year they had 141 people registered; there is a group that does the trek itself. It's a full on marathon,

TRIO OF FELINE SISTERS LOOKING FOR HOMES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The Lanark Animal Welfare Society is searching for homes (or one home) for a trio of feline sisters. These three girls are siblings found at the locks on Poonamalie Road. All are a bit shy, but like to be petted. They still need help getting socialized but would do better in a home

where they can get constant attention with people. Two kittens are better than one, as they can play together and keep each other company, and in this case, three kittens would be great! Please contact the shelter to meet these beautiful girls.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
