A Message from the President A Message from the President
Remember That We Are Professionals
Our company is built upon a culture of learning that is comprehensive, and where training never ends. When people discover why and how their work makes a difference and is meaningful and connect the two, they gain a significant winning advantage. Wevalueourpeopleandunderstandthatweareallprofessionals.
We know that our sales teams are not just retail clerks meant to be hemmed into a mindless existence as merely a cog in the corporate wheel. Many of our retail counterparts view people as a necessary line-item expense on the income statement when in fact people are the very essence of what makes the income statement at the bottom line. In the world of business, most people have on-the-job training specific to the task on hand, but often haven't been exposed to the underlying principles. They understand the duties and responsibilities, but not necessarily the principles that helped create them. Like the old adage, it is like giving someone fish so he can eat for a day instead of teaching him how to fish so he can feed himself for a lifetime.
Our stores average almost $2 million each in total revenue each year. Each store acts as a small business, with each store manager earning an income comparable to that of a small business owner. Yet our store managers don't carry the full entrepreneurial risk and workload. They have the support of our entire operation. Hiring any "warm body" at the lowest price kills retail service and will eventually kill the business. We know of retail establishments that hire someone as an assistant manager one week and promote him or her to store manager role the next. How can someone know the culture and methods of business in less than two weeks? Slack hiring standards reflect a cavalier attitude toward people. This mind set is destructive at any level of the organization.
We are raising up a legion of prosperous professionals and business people. Success depends upon being versed in business and economics, and in particular on the specifics of our industry. Informed business people are more apt to make better decisions and thereby improve their contribution and value to the company. Rewards are sure to follow. In turn, greater contribution means lower costs, better customer service, and higher earnings across the store and the company. That means we can attract even better people by perpetuating our Prosperous Wage.

EMPLOYEE CHECKLIST EMPLOYEE CHECKLIST
1. Know the plan
It’s in every employee’s best interest to understand what’s expected of them if a disaster occurs. Be aware of your company’s hurricane response plan, including the evacuation plan, safe spaces within the building, and how to secure your workspace if it’s required.
2. Stay informed
Whether in Florida, along the Gulf, on the Atlantic Seaboard, or another inland location far away, every employee should have a list with all of their direct points of contact during hurricane season and where to go for updates. If your company has an emergency communication system in place, ensure you understand how critical information will be shared and how to request help if needed.
3. Be proactive
Keep an emergency supply kit in your work area, your home, and potentially in your vehicle. To prepare for extended periods without power in your office, keep a flashlight, portable batterypowered phone charger, and extra batteries on hand. If you take prescription medications, speak with your physician to ensure you have extra. In the event of a power outage, credit cards might not work, so plan to keep some spare cash accessible.
You and your employees need to prepare for the possibility that you lose power, supplies run out, and water becomes undrinkable. Put together a collection of essential items you and your family may need in case of an emergency. Close them in airtight plastic bags, and store your entire hurricane kit in a large plastic container or waterproof duffel.

2023 HURRICANE SEASON 2023 HURRICANE SEASON
Hurricane season is here!
(June 1 to November 30)
NOAA’s outlook for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, which goes from June 1 to November 30, predicts 12 to 17 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA has a 70% confidence intheseranges.
A well-thought-out hurricane preparedness checklist for your teams can make preparing for this challenging season much, much more manageable. Please ensure that all employees have read and understand the Hurricane Policy & Procedures. We have provided checklists to help keep your people and property safe before, during, andafterastorm.
When a hurricane or tropical storm makes landfall, damage and disruption soon follows. Food and basic supplies may run out or be cut off for a period of time. Fallen trees can wipe out electricity, and roadways may flood at a moment’s notice. Experiencing a hurricane can be a stressful situation. But the more time and effort you put into your emergency preparedness plan, the easier it will be to remain calm, act quickly, and lessen the impact on your business. Understanding the risks your stores may face in a severe weather event is multifaceted.
The first step is to identify a storm in its infancy so that you can start to gauge how it will affect your people and business. Severe weather events evolve rapidly. So, whether you are monitoring NOAAandlocalweatheradvisories, thelateststorm data is key to understanding your potential for impact.
A copy of the SMG Hurricane Preparation & Procedure will be emailed to our employees. Area Leaders will follow up either with a call or meeting with their respective stores to discuss the checklistsputforthinthepolicy.

Ruby is the July birthstone – the name comes from the Latin word ruber/rubeus, meaning “red” – the color of love and passion.
In ancient India, ruby was called the “king of precious stones” for its rarity, hardness (second only to diamond), beauty and seeminglymysticalpowers.
Ruby has long been associated with life and blood, ruby was a symbol of power and youth in India. In past centuries, some believed this birthstone could predict misfortune or danger, and others claimed it would cure inflammatory diseases and soothe anger. Burmese warriors believed it made them invincible in battle. Medieval Europeans maintained that rubies bestowed health, wisdom, wealthandsuccessinlove. Ruby is found in Myanmar, Vietnam, Mozambique, Tanzania, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan&Madagascar.
Ruby’s strength and red fluorescence make it valuable for applications beyond jewelry. Both natural and lab created rubies are used in watchmaking, medical instruments, and lasers. Lab created ruby has been around sincetheearly1900’s.
Ruby is the red variety of corundum and is a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it practicalanddurablegemstoneforeveryday wear.Allothercolorsofcorundumarecalled Sapphire.

Store Cleanliness Helps Keep Customers Happy
Our company core value is keeping our stores Green & Clean. This means we not only provide the highest standard of integrity and superior customer servicebutweofferagreatpawn shopping experience! Our stores are not the typical pawn shop because we make sure they are clean and well-kept for a great customerexperience.
Keith Sexton, Director of New Site Development is implementing Green & Clean initiatives. Several stores have been completed, including landscaping, repairs, and freshly painted parking lots, bathrooms, and exterior of buildings. Several more stores are currently in progress and more stores on the way. We know that store cleanliness helps keep customers happy. We also know that people often talk more about poor experiences that positive ones. Now apply that to the digital world where news travels faster than everbefore.Mostpeoplecarrycellphones, whichmeansit'seasyto snap a photo and share it instantly with the world. This is why we aim to ensure our stores our exceptionally clean and wellmaintained.
QualitiesofaCleanStore:
Neatandcleanparkinglotsandsidewalksareimportant. These are the first areas customers see before entering a store. Keeping these areas well-kept and clean can speak volumes of a business. It sets the tone for a customer’s visit right from the start.
As with parking lots and sidewalks, having a pristine entryway should be prioritized. It should be well kept throughout businesshours, especiallyduringhightraffichours.
