Ruby is the July birthstone – the name comes from the Latin word ruber/rubeus, meaning “red” – the color of love and passion.

In ancient India, ruby was called the “king of precious stones” for its rarity, hardness (second only to diamond), beauty and seeminglymysticalpowers.

Ruby has long been associated with life and blood, ruby was a symbol of power and youth in India. In past centuries, some believed this birthstone could predict misfortune or danger, and others claimed it would cure inflammatory diseases and soothe anger. Burmese warriors believed it made them invincible in battle. Medieval Europeans maintained that rubies bestowed health,wisdom,wealthandsuccessinlove. Ruby is found in Myanmar, Vietnam, Mozambique, Tanzania, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan&Madagascar.

Ruby’s strength and red fluorescence make it valuable for applications beyond jewelry. Both natural and lab created rubies are used in watchmaking, medical instruments, and lasers. Lab created ruby has been around sincetheearly1900’s.

Ruby is the red variety of corundum and is a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it practicalanddurablegemstoneforeveryday wear.Allothercolorsofcorundumarecalled Sapphire.
