4 mothers who made history

Medicinal Flowers by Dr. Elisha Cook, ND Around this time of year, you will often hear individuals saying “April showers bring May flowers”. What many do not realize is that many commonly known flowers actually have medicinal qualities to them.

Many of these flowers are even used in naturopathic circles to help facilitate healing. Some of these medicinal flowers could even be growing in your own back yard! The medicinal flowers that we will explore in this article include chamomile, hibiscus, linden, calendula, and lavender!

These four women not only left their mark on their children, they also made innovations that changed the world.

Chamomile: When individuals think about therapeutic flowers, one of the most commonly thought of flowers is Chamomile. Chamomile is a small white flower that can be useful for such body systems as nervous, gastrointestinal, dermatological, and gynecological. Chamomile could be beneficial for gastritis (upset stomachs), anxiety, insomnia, dermatitis, menstrual cramps, and many other conditions based on its anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, and soothing capabilities.

Hibiscus: Though not a native plant of Canada, it can be quite beneficial for several body systems. Hibiscus can have an impact on the cardiovascular, endocrine, urinary, and musculoskeletal system. Specifically, hibiscus could be beneficial for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, tension, kidney stones, and anxiety.

Linden: Linden trees produce a small, white-yellow flower that can be useful in several body systems including cardiovascular, nervous, and respiratory systems. Linden could be beneficial for fevers, anxiousness, spasming pains, high blood pressure, and more.

Calendula: also known as Marigold (which can be found in many flower beds). Calendula works primarily in two body systems: dermatological and gastrointestinal.

Calendula’s main therapeutic components revolve around its soothing quality, and so, it can be effective in conditions involving irritation or inflammation in the digestive tract and skin. These conditions might include dermatitis and gastritis.

SIRIMAVO BANDARANAIKE, POLITICIAN (1916-2000)

When she was elected prime minister of Sri Lanka in 1960, Sirimavo Bandaranaike became the world’s first female non-hereditary head of government in modern history. She served in this role for three non-consecutive terms.

Lavender: is very commonly added to different medicinal formulas for its significant impact on the nervous system. In addition to the nervous system, lavender can also be effective for the musculoskeletal and gynecological system. Lavender could be quite effective for anxiety, insomnia, low mood, migraines, premenstrual tension syndrome, and more. Lavender can have a potent effect on hormones, and so, should be avoided in those who have not reached or gone through puberty, unless otherwise advised by a health care provider.

Two of her three children followed her into politics. Her daughter, Chandrika Kumaratunga, was the fifth president of Sri Lanka, and her son, Anura Bandaranaike, held numerous positions in parliament, notably Speaker, minister of higher education and minister of foreign affairs.

One common trend that you will notice among flowers in general, is that they have a calming effect on the body overall.

This trait is very characteristic of flowers when their therapeutic profiles are examined. It is also important to keep in mind that though these plants are therapeutic, some individuals should avoid their consumption or harvesting. If you wish to make use of some of these healing flowers, speak to a naturopathic doctor, herbalist, or botanist before doing so.

MARIE CURIE, PHYSICIST AND CHEMIST (1867-1934) Not only was Marie Curie the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize, she also remains the only person to have ever received Nobel Prizes in two dif­ferent sciences.

In 1906, she shared the award for physics with her husband, Pierre Curie, and her colleague, Henri Becquerel, for their research on radiation.

In 1911, she won the prize for chemistry for the discovery of the elements polonium (named for her native Poland) and radium. Her research was crucial in the development of X-ray equipment.

Marie and Pierre weren’t the only ones in their family to win Nobel Prizes.

Their daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie, shared the prize for chemis­try with her husband, Frédéric Juliot-Curie, in 1935.

VERA RUBIN, ASTRONOMER (1928-2016) American astronomer Vera Florence Cooper Rubin made a major scientific breakthrough when studying the rotation of galaxies early in her career. She discovered that galaxies rotate too fast to hold their shape if the only thing holding them together is the combined gravitational force of their stars.

Her observations and calculations led to the theory that dark matter holds them together. It’s theorized that there’s as much as six times more of this invisible matter in the universe as there is visible matter.

Dr. Rubin was equally known for her work making astronomy more accessible to women, and she mentored many aspiring female astronomers.

Throughout her groundbreaking career, Dr. Rubin raised four children who all went on to achieve PhDs in the sciences.

VALENTINA TERESHKOVA, COSMONAUT (1937) On June 6, 1963, 26 year old Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel to space.

During her three-day solo flight aboard the space capsule Volstok 6, she orbited the earth 48 times.

As a young woman, Tereshkova worked in a textile plant and skydived as a hobby. Her interest in skydiving played a part in her being chosen out of more than 400 candidates to be among the first group of female cosmonauts.

After her historic flight, she went on to obtain a doctorate in aerospace engineering.

Tereshkova married fellow cosmonaut Adrian Nikolayev and had a daughter named Elena. As the first child born to two parents who had been to space, Elena was the subject of medical interest. No medical issues were found, however, and Elena grew up to become a doctor. / 7

Local Hidden Gem! Bakin' Us Keto Owners Rachel Kavanaugh & Sarah Demerling have been friends for over 6 years now. We met at a play-date organized by a Cloth Diaper Group on Facebook when our kids were just a few months old. We have been stay at home moms taking care of our kids ever since, while also doing some entrepreneurial things on the side to make a bit of spending money. Both of us have had a love of baking ever since our grandmothers taught us to bake at a young age, which has always remained one of our fondest childhood memories.

How we began our journey into business partnership: Sarah has commercial space at the front of her home, which came available again in the summer. She decided to turn it back into Commercial Bakery like it was when they bought the property. There's such a need for commercial bakeries for rent in the area that she felt it would be a great business venture. The bakery was complete and received the go-ahead and inspection right before the Wellesley Apple Butter & Cheese Festival in September so Sarah thought it would be great to bake some keto items for sale there and asked Rachel to be a part of it since she had already been asked to sell her keto baking and needed a commercial space to work in. We baked our hearts out to get ready for the event and were sold out within a couple hours and knew we had to make an official business out of it. We started off by taking orders online, which went great but around December with us getting so busy we decided to have retail hours that people can come in and get single items of various off menu items.

Why we Started Eating & Baking the Ketogenic way: In September 2017, Rachel was recommended this lifestyle by her surgeon after she needed her second abdominal hernia surgery and was told if she didn't lose weight she'd need more surgery. Sarah started the lifestyle after seeing other friends successful with their weight loss journeys this way and decided she was sick of being so uncomfortable in her own skin and unhealthy. Since we started 8 /

around the same time we were very encouraging with each other.

Since then, Sarah had lost 50lbs and Rachel 55lbs, blood-work came back better than ever for both of us and our doctors were impressed so that's when we knew we were on the right path. We started baking quality keto breads, bagels and sweets as treats for when we had cravings and saw a need for places people could go to to buy their keto items too, and we were right.

The Future: We Are hoping to have our items in a few more stores in the KW area, and grow organically through word of mouth from our amazing customers.

SEVEN EVENTS… SEVEN DAY! Starting May 1st is YOUTH WEEK - A fun filled week with a new event every day!

May 1 we have a photo scavenger hunt fun for all ages.

May 2 we are having an LGBTQ2+ information sessions for both youth and adults presented by ACCKWA and SHORE which will be hosted in the Wayne Roth room for adults and the Optimist Youth Centre for youth from 6-8 pm.

May 3 we have a youth drop-in in the Youth Centre filled with fun games and activities.

May 4 from 9-5 we are hosting the rural youth forum at the New Dundee Community Centre. This day is to bring together the rural youth in the region and surrounding communities together to foster leadership and youth empowerment.

May 5 we are hosting a Youth Painting Party for all the artist out there at the Wilmot Recreation Complex from 2pm-4pm for a small fee of $10.00. All materials supplied!

May 6 the Jr. YAC is hosting a Family Roller Skating night in the arena floor from 6pm-8pm!

May 7 not only will WAYVE be presenting for some of the leadership classes at WO about stress and time management, but there will also be a board game cafe in the youth centre filled with everything from board games to video games from 6pm-9pm.

Wilmot's Youth Action Council (Y.A.C.) is a group of local youth volunteers (ages 14- 19) who offer other youth a chance to be involved in the community, to create and support the youth voice. Youth will learn and develop leadership skills and provide input into the programs offered to them.

Wilmot's Youth Action Council is open to all youth within the community, and is committed to finding out their needs and interests. Through the actions of the group, youth will be provided with the opportunity to become involved in activities and events throughout the community.

Canada's New Food Guide Key protein changes have been made to Canada's Food Guide since 1977. Gone are the basic four food groups - today there are only 3; fruit & vegetables, whole grains and proteins.

When Health Canada was working on the guide last year their focus would be on plant-based protein vs the animal-based proteins or dairy. While the dairy & meat are still included in the new guide added emphasis has been given to the plant-based proteins (nuts, legumes & tofu).

For the first time, Health Canada has also taken into account concerns not completely related to what we eat, but how we are consuming it. Environmental issues such as sustainability and impacts of raising animals for food, animal welfare and eating local.

One good source of protein that has been limited in the new guide is dairy, including cheese, cow milk, and yogurt. It is now important to ensure you are getting enough protein and other essential nutrients like iron, B vitamin, minerals, omega 3s, and fiber in your daily diet.

Can you get enough protein without meat? Yes... by following a high protein vegetarian diet that includes foods such as eggs, lentils, chia seeds, almonds & quinoa.

Why Eat High Protein Foods? Examples of High Protein Foods from Plant Sources Protein is an important part of every well-balanced Quinoa – 14 grams per 100g meal and healthy diet. Simple flowers, simple flavours. What I love about spring are the budding, baby flowers, sharp green colour of the grass and clean, the new smell in the morning.

Lemon, asparagus, chicken pasta is like spring on a plate to me. Enjoy!

Lemon Asparagus Chicken Pasta Ingredients: • • • • • •

2 Boneless, skinless chicken breast 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 Pinch salt & Pepper 2 Tbsp butter 4 Cloves garlic 2 Cups Chicken broth

2 Cups Milk ⅛ Cup Lemon Juice 300 g Fettuccine 1 lb asparagus ½ Cup Shredded Parmesan Cheese 1 Lemon Zest

Directions: 1. Heat olive oil in pan on medium-high heat in large sauté pan.

2. Salt and Pepper chicken and add to pan cooking for 5-6 minutes on either side turning golden brown when done. Cover and remove from heat.

3. Melt butter and sauté chopped garlic. Add chicken broth, milk, lemon juice and salt to taste. Simmer on medium-low heat. Stirring frequently, do not allow to boil or brown.

4. Cook pasta according to directions, rinse and strain.

5. Trim asparagus and boil for 3-4 minutes, it will soften when done.

6. Add cooked pasta to sauce and plate. Top with Chicken, asparagus, parmesan and lemon zest.

Self Care Deficit

Solo Travel for an EPIC Adventure!

Ladies, usually I like to paint a picture and create analogies, stories and imagery that drives home the point of my articles. Today is different. We need to get down, dirty and real with ourselves! Right now, many of us are experiencing what I like to refer to as a “Self-Care Deficit”.

Allow me to explain: When is the last time you took the time to just sit around and do absolutely nothing, without feeling like you shouldn’t be? When is the last time you spent time on YOU and only YOU, without the guilt trip you self-inflict upon yourself? And… when is the last time you decided that the kids, partner, work, or other obligations could just simply WAIT because you need to take care of you? Can’t remember? Maybe a few weeks or months ago? That’s just not good enough. You’re in a deficit. You need to bail yourself out, and fast!

Deficit, by definition, means a loss, a lack of, or not enough of. And you, are not lost, you are not lacking, and you are absolutely 100% enough. Period. But we need to change a few things in your brain, and that does take time. My prescription?

Meditate daily, take time for mindfulness, practice breathing techniques, and most importantly: give yourself the care that you need.

Self-care does not mean that you need to make sure you’re showering daily, and brushing your teeth (I hope we all do that daily), it’s more than that, and what it does mean is this:

1. Putting yourself FIRST (it's NOT selfish).

2. Allowing yourself the space and time to re-charge and relax without guilt. Zero guilt.

3. Ditching those gremlins or demons that have told you all of your life that in order to feel successful or accomplished – you need to be busy all of the time, or cleaning the house, or running the kids around, or whatever other conditioning/thinking you’ve accumulated over the years.

4. Knowing when you need to remove yourself from toxic people or situations and enjoy some time to care for your soul, spirit and heart.

5. Giving yourself permission to do something that lights you up, brings you joy, helps you in a healthy and positive way – like yoga, meditation, mindfulness, hiking in nature.

Accepting that yes, you are wonder-woman most times – and you can multi-task, and care for everyone else – BUT you need to take care of you. You can’t care for anyone else if there is no care left for you.

Taking stock – on a daily basis – if you’ve given something back to yourself, if you’ve nurtured your spirit, if you’ve done something loving or kind for yourself – even something small like treating yourself to a coffee or a quiet country drive alone.

When you’re beginning to get out of deficit – the only way is up. So I’m suggesting to start small, and here’s a little self-care routine I like to put into place when I am low on battery or gas. Let your family know that it’s time for YOU. No interruptions unless it’s a massive emergency, and I would even go so far as to hang a note on the door or the bathroom. Don’t answer the knocks. Turn off the cell. Put on some relaxing meditative music. Just IN-JOY! Steph’s Self-Care Routine: (done before bed) 1. 15-20 minute guided or silent meditation (you can start with 5 minutes for beginners).

2. 10-minute warm bath or a hot shower.

3. Face mask (I like using egg whites), Face scrub & hot towel wash (nothing better than hot towels on the face!)

This is a salon for all offering diversity, updated styles, body piercing and its very own tattoo studio, all nestled in one large location at 45 Stanley St Unit 209, Ayr. Q: Tell me a little about yourself and how you got started in the business?

I’ve been in the hairstylist for 28 years, had babies in between, worked for a salon supplier for a while and worked at this salon for about 3 years before I bought it. That was 7 years ago, and we were just down the hall and later moved to this unit 2 years ago in October.

Q: This is an incredibly unique salon, you have the hair salon, aesthetics, piercing, and the tattoo bar, what came first?

“I always wanted a salon, but I just wanted a salon, and I’m a little bit edgy, let’s say that,” she laughs about the beautiful ink on her arms.

So, I thought oh well why not do this. When I decided to move I knew I wanted a tattoo shop because I have a lot of tattoos and my kids have a lot of tattoos, my husband as well, we are just like that and it’s something that living in Ayr I was always asked: “Oh where did you get your tattoos?” and I would send them to other places.

So, I thought, okay maybe this is something I should do.

And then I ran into Kevin who has been my tattoo artist for five years and when he decided to come with me, that’s when I said, okay this is what we’re doing.

I could visualize what I wanted Studio 127 to look like because it was one huge open space. My dad restores old cars, so he installed all the car parts out there in the salon, the old Pontiac parts were restored by him. The skulls you see, those are just me and some people don’t understand it but it’s just part of who I am, and it works, it’s different, but it’s good.

Q: And the piercing?

That was something I wanted to do from the beginning but I wanted to find the right person and it’s hard to find someone you can trust to put holes in people’s bodies, and I needed to find somebody that completely clicked with everyone. It took me a year and a half to find the team I have now, and my team now is amazing, it’s a perfect fit and right now I have everything here that I wanted.

Q: Who is your client?

We have everything from babies, to some in their nineties, and everything in between. I had a gentleman here last week; he was 76 and got a tattoo. We had a lady two weeks ago getting her first tattoo at 56 and then we have your 16-year old kids that come in wanting to get a tattoo, but they must be 18 or with and parental consent.

Q: Do you get clientele from outside of the city?

I have clients from Toronto, London, Kitchener, Cambridge, Woodstock, everywhere. I have a seasoned team. I’ve been doing hair for 28 years, Michelle has been doing for 31, Amanda has been doing for 8, Lauren 3, and our new apprentice has only been out of school for six months. Chantel has been an aesthetician for 16 years, so we’ve been working with a lot of these people for a long time who bring their people with them.

“I have a great team and it’s hard to find that because there’s 8 of us, so all of us together and Kevin, been the only guy, it works,” she laughs.

Q: Tell me what has been the most challenging part of this journey?

The change. The tattooing was a big deal because I had a lot of mixed reaction from people before I

opened it. “We don’t need that here” and so on, but so far, it’s been a success.

The biggest challenged was when I moved. This was double the space, double everything, so just trying to fill it with employees because there were only four us at my previous place, and getting the word out to people as well, but so far, it’s been good and thank god for social media.

Q: Can you tell me about your creative process as a hair stylist?

I’ve always been able to look at you and know what looks good. So if you come in and tell me you want something but I know it’s not going to work or look good, I will tell you the truth if I know for a fact it will look awful and offer suggestions and tweaks that will work on you.

“Take a chance, don’t be scared. Hair can always be fixed, tattoos not so much. Piercings can be taken out, aesthetics, oh well you can always repaint, but you can’t be scared, just jump in or you’ll never go anywhere in this business. Q: Do you think this trifecta of services is something that other salons will embrace, do you have competition now?

No, I don’t have any competition when it comes to this.

There’s a lot of hair salons in town but none like us.

For the salon, you are looking at a 2-week wait for Michelle and me, but always call because you never know, we may have a cancellation and fit you in. We have a lot of walk-ins and there’s always someone here.

Q: How has social media helped you with your business?

A: It’s huge, we take a lot of pictures of everything we do

and post to Facebook & Instagram. Any flash specials go out on social and I’m on it all the time. I get the whole team involved as they are responsible for posting their work.

“That’s the thing with my team, we all help each other out and we are a team, seniority doesn’t apply,” she says.

‘Tattoo’ is one of the most misspelled words in the English language.

A tattoo is etched in the second layer of the skin, the dermis. The cells of the dermis are more stable than those of the epidermis.

The most popular tattoo images are angels and hearts.

The word “tattoo” derives from the Polynesian word “ta” (“to strike”), which describes the sound of a tattooing spike being knocked on skin.

"Prome Queen", "Bieber Feaver" To get a tattoo, the skin is pierced between 50 and 3,000 times a minute by a tattoo machine.

Barbie tried to get trendy and for a stretch of time, you could actually buy a tattooed Barbie doll. Known as “Butterfly Art Barbie”, she was released with a butterfly tattoos on her abdomen but he lifespan proved to be short as there was a backlash from parents who didn’t want their children to be influenced by tattooed dolls.  / 21

APRIL SHOWERS bring MAY FLOWERS or as the saying goes. And with those flowers comes MAY DAY, a holiday that most people have heard of but have no idea what it's for. It is a celebration of the seasons changing as well as a day to celebrate workers' rights.

It has its roots in ancient pagan festivals marking the beginning of summer - dancing and skipping around a flagpole with ribbons attached in the sunshine. It is also the same day as INTERNATIONAL WORKERS' DAY since the 1880s. On May 1, 1886 hundreds of thousands of U.S. industrial workers participated in a nationwide strike to demand an eight-hour workday instead of the common 10- to 16- hour days. It was a time of protests and brawls for many days with several strikers being wounded or killed.

MOTHER'S DAY is not a public holiday but always celebrated the second Sunday in May - it is a day to show your appreciation for and honour all mothers/mother figures. Carnations are a popular Mother's Day symbol and it a custom to wear a white flower if your Mother has passed and a coloured flower if your Mother is alive. Some people give cards, flowers, chocolates and/ or handmade items or special meals on Mother's Day. Others spend a day with their mother/mother figure at the movies, in the park or at a restaurant. Some mothers /mother figures receive special gifts such as jewellery, clothing, accessories, and gift certificates.

VICTORIA DAY celebrates Queen Victoria born on May 24th, queen of England between 1837 and 1901, who has a special place in the hearts of many Canadians. She was a popular monarch among a population that remained loyal to the throne after the American Revolution and she also was the monarch who granted Canada its early independence in 1867 - an independence that kept the Queen as the official Head of State in this new country. Victoria Day is always celebrated on the Monday before May 25th. It is celebrated by large fireworks displays in many cities and towns. It is a day of picnics hopefully in the sunshine and the traditional weekend to 'open the cottage'; repair any winter damage and prepare the cottage for summer use. Thanksgiving weekend is the traditional end of 'cottage season'.

Ned sounded concerned as he reminisced: "My great grandfather survived a 100 foot fall down an elevator shaft. My grandfather lived to tell of a 50 foot fall down a stairway. And my Dad is still with us after a 25 foot fall off a ladder!”
