A note from the Editor...

As we slide into February, the year has begun with a traditional Canadian winter, complete with plenty of snow & frigid temperatures! Small Town Life had a poll on our Facebook page asking readers ‘do you prefer winter sports or winter getaways’? I couldn’t help but think of a family friend who has fully embraced the winter sport of snowboarding, making winter not only bearable but desirable! Oh what a thought, anticipating the snow & cold every year. Unfortunately I have yet to find the motivation & desire to jump head first into something that has me spending more than 5 minutes in the freezing temps of winter - and so I still choose a winter getaway. If you feel the same you should check out Woodstock Travel. They are presenting their 4th annual Travel Show on February 9th.

Complete with free admission, show specials & door prizes, I will definitely be attending this event! Perhaps Woodstock Travel can help me stroke another item off my bucket list, and I won’t just be daydreaming of my toes in the sand but will actually find my tropical paradise this blustery season!

Exciting things are happening for Small Town Life… we will be attending the Mamapalooza Mother’s Day Market on May 11th at the North Dumfries Community Complex in Ayr. Stop by our booth for lots of giveaways, live Facebook action, and a draw for some cool prizes. The Mamapalooza Market will be booming with amazing vendors so pop by, meet the Small Town Life team, and do some shopping for your mom, with your mom, or for a new mom-to-be!

Dreaming of an April spring thaw? Mark your calendars! Coming to Plattsville on April 20th is the Wilmot Wild Jr C Lacrosse Spring Shootout! This will be the second year they bring their annual spring exhibition to Plattsville - promoting the sport of lacrosse in nearby communities that would enjoy the high level action. I, for one, can’t wait to bring my son to view his first ever lacrosse game! More info to come regarding this exciting event.

I love when small town communities come together and support each other, which is what this magazine is all about. Small Town Life began a new segment called Around Your Town, brought to you on Facebook Live. The idea behind it: uncover local hot spots & events in the area and bring them to you Live on Location! The Ayr Centennials Alumni Spring 4 on 4 Hockey Program A Non-profit community program ran in Ayr Ontario by local volunteers and Ayr Centennials JR C Hockey Alumni.

This Spring 4 on 4 hockey Program is offered to girls, boys, youth and adults run on Saturdays during the months of April and May. The program promotes team work, emphasis on fun and fair play to all players in our Spring Hockey Program. Our program gives each player a chance to meet new friends within the community, have fun in a positive environment and keep kids and adults playing the game we call love to play “Hockey “.

With running our program for 5 years now, The Ayr Centennials Alumni Spring 4 on 4 program has seen growth in all divisions and has had amazing feedback from participants and families. From Sons and fathers playing together on the ice, to kids in the community meeting other kids from other areas of town, to all the teams working together it has been great to see over the years for our program.

The Ayr Centennials Alumni Spring 4 on 4 program has also sponsored many young athletes in sports in our surrounding area. From Hockey to Figure Skating, The Ayr Centennials Alumni Spring 4 on 4 program has always been about giving back to the community. Our Program has assisted in helping with multiple registrations to youth who may not be able to play or participate in a program due to lack of funding or unforeseen circumstances. With the help of our program we are able to give back to the community and help others who are in need of that extra funding so no one is left out.

With the help of local business sponsorships over the years, The Ayr Centennials Alumni 4 on 4 program has been able to keep costs down for participants to play hockey in our program, purchase jerseys and equipment. All business sponsors of our program are recognized through our social media and given a spotlight about their business for thanking them for their support and sponsorship. We are so appreciative of sponsors and we would not be where are today without them.

Household mold & your health

Are your child’s asthma attacks becoming more frequent and serious? Are you continually catching colds? These situations may be the result of exposure to mildew without you even knowing it.

When a lot of mildew — or mold — develops in a home, these microscopic fungi can scatter breathable particles into the air and consequently cause a number of health problems. Depending on your state of health, age, and amount of time spent in the home, you could be more sensitive. Especially vulnerable are babies, young children, seniors, and people with depressed immune systems.

How do you know if these unwelcome visitors are invading your home?

Look for the following: the appearance of stains, which are often black, on walls, ceilings, or carpets; a musty or earthy smell; dark rings and buckling, which are evidence of water infiltration. Mold loves damp conditions, and those can usually be found in basements, the backs of closets, under kitchen sinks, in bathrooms, and sometimes around windows.

You can prevent mold by ensuring good ventilation in your home. Open windows or switch on fans when taking baths or showers or when you’re cooking. In hot, humid weather be sure to use a dehumidifier in chronically damp places, especially in the basement. Empty and clean the reservoir regularly and add several drops of lemon essential oil to disinfect it. Repair any water leaks as soon as possible. If condensation forms on windows, especially during the winter, check the insulation. These small actions will help to prevent mold from harming your family’s health.

Humidity and ventilation To prevent mould, maintain an indoor humidity le­vel between 30 and 50 per cent and ensure optimal ventilation.

A little piece of Ontario History: Joseph 'Jos'Montferrand:

Joseph "Jos" Montferrand was a French-Canadian logger, strong man and hero of the working man... And the inspiration for the legendary Big Joe Mufferaw - a Canadian folk hero from Ottawa Valley. Best known today as the mascot 'Big Joe' of the Ottawa Redblacks of the CFL, and the subject of Stompin' Tom Connors song Big Joe Mufferaw. Widely believed Montferrand also inspired the creation of Paul Bunyon, he was renowned for his feat of strengths, and courage standing against big logging companies. Three books have been published recounting Joe's adventures, and a statue of Joe Mufferaw was erected outside a Museum in Mattawa, Ontario.

Living Healthy with Dr. Elisha Cook ND

Heart Healthy Habits In February, we celebrate Heart Health Month, which brings awareness to heart-related conditions.

Your heart is a very important organ, and its health can be impacted by and impact many other organs.

Rather than only including information on some heart healthy habits, I thought it might be interesting to provide some insight into the heart from a Traditional Asian Medicine perspective (please note that this perspective looks at more of a metaphorical heart and pathologies do not specifically correlate to physical heart issues, e.g. heart blood stagnation does not mean you literally have blood stuck in your heart). In Traditional Asian Medicine, the heart has a very important role in controlling personality, and joy. If there is an imbalance in this organ it can lead to excessive or deficient joy (mania, depression), anxiety, or insomnia. With this mental – emotional perspective in mind, it may give more fuel to the research findings below that connect depression with an increased risk of heart disease (this is of course in addition to much research between various other connections between depression and other factors which lead to heart disease).

With that being said, below are some findings and habits that may help you to adopt a more heart healthy lifestyle:

Exercise: Exercise helps keep your heart healthy on many different levels.

Firstly, it improves your cholesterol levels by increasing good cholesterol and decreasing bad cholesterol. In addition, exercise can also help to decrease blood pressure. All of these parameters can contribute to heart disease if left unchecked. Exercise also combats depression, which can be a risk factor for heart disease. The important principle to recognize about exercise is that it should be sustained activity such as walking or exercising for a period of at least 20 to 30 minutes in duration. Research has shown the amount of exercise per week that should be achieved in order to maintain body weight (another important factor for heart health) is 120-150 minutes per week.

Avoid Smoking: Smoking has several negative impacts on the heart which include stiffening the arteries and causing plaque build-up in the arteries, which could lead to atherosclerosis. By avoiding smoking, one significantly reduces their risk of heart disease.

Laugh: Laughter can help improve heart health by decreasing blood pressure and helping to combat depression (as mentioned above, a risk factor for heart disease). Some find that laughing can help them to cope with stress as well. A way to increase your laughter in a day includes taking time for activities that you enjoy, with the people you enjoy most!

Eat lots of fruits and veggies: Fruits and vegetables provide a hefty source of antioxidants, fiber, and nutrients, all of which can decrease the risk of heart disease and improve overall heart health. Many of the nutrients can also protect arteries and help the body become more resilient especially with stress. In addition, fruits and vegetables can help to decrease blood pressure and promote healthy cholesterol levels.

Manage Stress: Stress can have a negative impact on the heart by increasing blood pressure, increasing blood sugar, increasing cholesterol, and increasing fat retention (which makes the heart have to work harder by having to pump blood further to more tissue). By managing stress more efficiently, one can decrease their risk of heart disease and improve heart health overall.

If you are struggling to incorporate any of these heart healthy habits, consider speaking with your health care provider about different strategies and realistic goals for your specific situation.

Supporter Spotlight! Meet the Doctor...

Plattsville Natural Health Clinic (PNHC) was founded by Dr. Elisha Cook ND, who has a passion for helping people get to the root cause of their health concerns, and live with a high quality of life. This passion for healing has been evident through Dr. Elisha Cook ND’s whole life.

With this passion in mind, she went on to complete a four year Honours in Bachelor of Health Science at the University of Western Ontario.

While here, she received extra training in areas including Motivational Interviewing, Occupational Health and Safety, and Health Promotion. Upon graduating, Elisha began her educational journey at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) in Toronto Ontario. She completed the four year professional post – graduate program, which included one full year of internship at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic, and a portion of the year spent at Anishnawbe Health Toronto (a health clinic specific for the Aboriginal population).

During this internship, she saw a variety of health complaints and mastered the skills needed to become the naturopathic doctor that she is today. Elisha Cook graduated from the program, having completed her Bachelor of Naturopathy, completed all board exams for

certification, and has since been practicing as a licensed Naturopathic Doctor since.

As a naturopathic doctor, Elisha treats the root cause of disease, and does not merely treat the symptoms. This approach to health is completed through the use of Clinical Nutrition, Botanical Medicine, Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Homeopathy, Physical Medicine, Hydrotherapy, and Lifestyle Counselling. Superfoods: worth the cost?

What do chia seeds, kale, goji berries, coconut oil and quinoa have in common? They’ve all been branded “superfoods” because they’re rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants thought to be especially beneficial to your health. Over the last decade, superfoods have been widely acclaimed for their supposedly miraculous benefits. According to nutrition experts, however, these trendy health foods aren’t worth the cost.

First, it’s important to understand that there’s no scientific definition of a superfood. It’s purely a marketing term that was coined in the natural foods industry to sell certain foods and products.

Most dietitians and nutrition scientists dispute the concept of superfoods.

While they’re certainly good for you, in most cases their benefits have been overstated. Goji berries may be rich in antioxidants, but so are blueberries and most other berries. Similarly, kale isn’t better for you than spinach or other leafy greens, and coconut oil isn’t healthier than regular olive oil.

What’s more, marketers often rely on the exoticism of superfoods — acai berries from the Amazon, goji berries from the Himalayas, etc. — to suggest that they have more health benefits than common staples. This is untrue and causes people to spend lots of money on foods that are expensive. Plus, the spike in popularity in some of these foods can negatively affect the environments where they’re grown. For instance, Bolivian farming communities that have grown quinoa for centuries are often unable to afford to buy the grain for themselves.

The truth is, adding a superfood to your diet won’t positively affect your health unless you’re already eating a balanced diet. Focus instead on eating a wide variety of nutrient-rich fruits, vegetables, legumes HEALTHY TEETH FOR and grains.

Coffee & Mindfulness

Have you ever had a hot beverage so yummy that it changed your life?

Something that made you melt with just the first steamy sip? I’m Dutch, so by nature I am a coffee connoisseur. I know a good cup from a bad one, and I know that anytime is coffee time. Growing up on a tobacco farm we had coffee break for the primers (Dutch exchange students who picked tobacco) and when I was about 9 years old, I had my first taste.

Of course, it was loaded with milk and sugar, great conversation, laughter, and a nice break while on the back of a pick up truck on a hot summer’s day. Spending time with a group of Dutchies who felt like family, and my Dad – the biggest coffee lover of all.

In Dutch we have a saying: “De Koffie is Klaar” – which translates to: the coffee is ready. Every morning on the farm, at around 9am we would prepare and deliver coffee to the workers. It literally was steeped in tradition. I would help my Mom brew it, get enough mugs, all of the ‘fixin’s’, and pack it up to wait for my Dad to pick me up in the GMC. I loved the smell and the comradery it created. I loved how quiet everyone got when we all took our first sip. Pure silence and happiness.

It got me to thinking how honest coffee is, and how mindful it can be. Coffee lovers everywhere would agree. That first hot sip in the morning is heaven, and nothing else really exists. You really don’t have any other impeding thoughts besides “yum” or “ahhhh”, and that’s a perfect segway into mindfulness coffee drinking.

So many of my clients, friends and followers tell me that there isn’t any time for mindfulness in their lives. Excuses.

Many Moms tell me that they have kids, and they work- they can’t find time in their days. Excuses.

Do you drink coffee? (or tea – that’s acceptable too!) Yes? Then you can be mindful. No? Then try it with water, juice, breakfast, snacks.

Here is my suggestion and challenge for you for the next 5 days: 1. When you prepare the coffee, make it a nice ritual. Play music, think positive thoughts, and take some nice deep breaths.

2. While it’s brewing or steeping (depending on your method) relax. Think of all of the things you are grateful for. Be in the present moment. Don’t let your thoughts attach themselves to anything else, beside the enjoyment of the moment.

3. Enjoy using your favorite mug, one that sparks joy for you. (thanks Marie Kondo!)

4. Pour it slowly, enjoy mixing in your fixings.

5. Let that first sip be wonderful. Close your eyes, take a deep breath. Sip. 6. Thereafter, let every sip represent what you are grateful for or thankful for. It really works!

Now, if you are like me and on the go often, I don’t make coffee at home. I go to Settlement Coffee in Ayr. And wow, is it ever delicious. I use that time to be “sneakily mindful”. Meaning: I breathe, think about my ‘gratitude’s’, and am outwardly thankful to the staff who pour my delicious cup of coffee for me. When I walk back to my vehicle, I am warmed by the feeling of my coffee in my hand and again, I think positive thoughts.

Before driving, I take my first sip. I let that steep into my thoughts and belly. Fully present of the hot liquid traveling down my throat and warming me from the inside up. It’s heaven. While driving, with every sip I take, I feel more and more gratitude. The entire process is joyful and enlightening.

Walking the Labyrinth

Have you ever wondered what a Labyrinth is? Or what a Labyrinth is used for? Labyrinths date back over 4000 years. Often circular in shape, like the medieval Chartres labyrinth, one of the oldest, still in use, in the nave floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France.

The Labyrinth has one path into a center and the same path is taken back out again. The labyrinth is different than a maze. Unlike the trickery of a maze, to get you lost, the labyrinth is designed to show you the way. The usual circle shape of a labyrinth is an inclusive image for wholeness and unity, reflecting every aspect of the nature of human experience.

As you enter the path of the labyrinth you are invited to pay attention to your experience, everything on your walk becomes a metaphor for your life. Here on the path is where you have a heart-to-heart talk with your body, Spirit, and mind. Find your own rhythm and pace. Listen to your body. You are invited to set aside all expectations and simply notice everything around you, in the space and within yourself. When you reach the center, you surrender to listening. Here is where wisdom can be heard. When you are ready, you begin your journey back out from the center, reflecting on what and how you may explore further, or incorporate what you have been given.

People all around the world walk the labyrinth for: de-stressing, creativity, meditation, self-discipline, healing and much more. When we walk with our soul and listen, much wisdom is given. Institutions are also recognizing the health benefits of walking the labyrinth, with many labyrinths being built and used in hospitals, churches, schools, and prisons.

There is so much that goes on inside the labyrinth that we simply cannot explain or understand. From navigating the twists and turns and the way they ground our soul and cause our brain to focus, to settle, to listen. The movement of this sacred path, gives peace to our heartbeat, and calmness to our mind. We cannot always describe what happens in the labyrinth, but we know it is something important.

Often our critical voices in our head are confused with the wise guidance from the ‘still small voice’ within. The voice of Spirit is soft, gentle and encouraging. It offers hope and invites you deeper into the mystery of life. The critical voices are loud and repetitious. They nag and discourage. They take away hope and imprison through threats and lies. When you enter the labyrinth, you leave the critical voices outside of the sacred circle.

When we observe ourselves on the path as we walk, we learn lessons; we learn to deepen our compassion/mercy, to lesson our judgments, to increase our patience, and to find our purpose and share it with the world.

I have been walking the Labyrinth for many years and love to invite others to learn and experience this amazing gift. I love hosting and leading groups at our outdoor Labyrinth on our farm or travelling with my indoor canvas Labyrinth. Over the years, I have discovered that there is always a song in your heart and when you forget how it goes, the sacred path of the Labyrinth sings it back to you.

Well, I think it landed in my path. I was about 10 years old when I came to Canada from Peru and couldn’t speak English. I got into the restaurant business at an extremely early age and took it from there. Worked hard and this is how I got here.

I had the wonderful opportunity of sitting down with Piero Serra. The inspiring, talented chef and owner of Table32 Foodbar in Ayr. We discussed his beginnings, what brought him to Ayr, his love for entertaining and of course his passion for food.

The cozy and stunningly decorated Table 32 is conveniently located at 32 Stanley Street in downtown Ayr, set in a heritage building at the corner of Stanley & Northumberland Street.

What's your secret to keeping customers coming into or back to Table 32?

I think the key to any business is customer service. Excellent quality food, and consistency. But I think the main key ingredient that separates Table32 from any other restaurant is that we go above and beyond for any customer that walks in. I don’t like to call them customers, they are my guests coming into my house and I make sure everyone feels that way. We do our best to make sure that happens.

You mentioned you are from the GTA, what brought you to the beautiful town of Ayr? A friend called me up one day when he and his wife closed it down and asked if I wanted to take over. I came and checked it out and saw what a beautiful place it was and in a beautiful town. The previous owners did an amazing job with the décor, and I thought this place could really have a great vibe and we could make something out of it.

What are some of the challenges of being a restaurant owner and manager?

The main challenge for any restaurant owner is that you must enjoy what you’re doing. You must live and breathe the restaurant. If you’re open five, six or seven days a week, there’s never a dull moment. Even when the restaurant is closed, there’s always stuff going on behind the scenes. So, between maintaining your good customer service, excellent quality food, making sure your costs make sense and all the other management stuff is in order, you must also make family and personal time. You really must enjoy what you’re doing and wake up every morning and say, “Oh well, here’s another 15-hour day, let’s go get it,” and I think that’s the biggest thing. There’s never a day I don’t want to come in. As opposed to when you work at a job and you’re doing something that maybe you’re not 100% happy with. This place is different, I come in and I say, “Can’t wait for today brings.” Even when there are issues from the morning, phone calls, gas/electric, or a fridge breaks down, you get by it, and I think those daily challenges as long as you are honest with your guests, everyone understands, and you can overcome anything.

What's your favourite thing about running a restaurant?

what you’re doing. You need to be a people person to interact with clients and have fun. Whether I’m serving or cooking for them. If I’m serving them, we’re going to have a great time and if I’m cooking for them, then I’m dancing and singing in the back. Many times, I get carried away by the music. I have looked up and noticed people are looking back at me from a table or the bar wondering who’s the guy, and that’s me.

What sets Table 32 apart from other restaurants?

It’s a very cozy place and the atmosphere is great. The overall experience. If you come in here and tell me you want breakfast but It’s 5 o’clock in the afternoon, I will do it for you, as long as I have the ingredients. I don’t have a kid’s menu either, but I have kids so I know what it’s like to go to a restaurant with kids and I think a lot of the parents that come out here and bring their kids are really impressed in terms of what the child can get. I will come out and talk to the kid, discuss what they like and what we can make for them, because I will make absolutely anything to make their experience a little bit better and help the parents out in terms of having a nice dinner without having the stress of kids running around and enjoying their food.

What advice can you give a culinary school student or any aspiring chef for that matter?

Make sure this is what you really want to do and that you are going to want to do it for seven days, 24hrs a day if that’s what it takes. Because the first few years are never easy. You have to sweat it, don’t give up, and just go at it. The sun will shine.

A Taste of Love Submitted by Heather Kring Cooking is a labour of love for me. I turn on my music, done my apron and the hours can melt away. I always feel fulfilled and satisfied even if my meal turns out to be a flop. For me the fun is in the creation. It’s a process, not a product that I love. When I have to try something new, it resembles a new relationship for me. Will they like me, will I do something silly that will ruin things? My stomach gets butterflies and I feel all giddy like a school-girl having a crush. This has been my latest crush. Risotto. If you’ve ever watched cooking movies or shows, you know the perfect risotto is up there. Creamy, warm, delicious. It is not labourious, let’s be real - no one really has time to spend hours in the kitchen and the perfect risotto taking hours is just a myth. So why not give it a try? Just practice once before you make it for your sweetie as the Valentine’s Meal.

Shrimp and Parmesan Risotto

Ingredients: 1 lb large raw shrimp (peeled and deveined) 1 tbsp olive oil ½ tsp paprika Salt and pepper to taste 8 cups chicken-broth 2 tbsp unsalted butter

1 small onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 cups arborio rice ½ cup white wine (ok to omit) 1 ½ cups parmesan cheese, grated 1 cup parsley, chopped

Directions: 1. Heat oven to 400deg Rinse shrimp and pat dry. Mix oil, paprika, salt and pepper in a bowl and add the shrimp. Coat and spread on a baking sheet. Set aside-not in the oven!

2. Warm chicken broth in a medium saucepan on the stove on low heat.

3. In a separate sauté pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Brown onion and garlic.

4. Add rice to butter, onion and garlic mixture cooking for 2 minutes. Add wine (if you have it on-hand, it adds a deeper flavour to the risotto) scraping the bottom of the rice until all of the wine has absorbed and evaporated.

5. Ladle the broth, one spoonful at a time to the rice mixture until it too has absorbed/evaporated (this is the labourious part that is ESSENTIAL to the risotto product - it takes about 18 minutes to complete this step!). Each ladleful has to be gone before adding the next, this creates the full-creamy taste in each grain. **Some stoves like mine need to be closer to low than medium heat to ensure it’s not boiling, this should be done at a simmer heat.** 6. In the last 5 minutes (so about 13 minutes in to the adding of the broth), put the shrimp in the oven.

7. Add the shrimp parmesan and parsley to the risotto. Season with salt and pepper as needed. Transfer to serving bowl et voilà!

Authors note: If your not ready to take on the risotto, why not eat the parmesan shrimp with pasta or your favourite vegetable noodles? Adding spinach and cherry tomatoes will also add flavour and colour but will not take away from the flavours either - just sauté them in a frying pan before adding to the mixture!

2019 Real Estate Market what's in store? By Alison Willsey, Broker What will the 2019 Real Estate Market have in store for Buyers and Sellers? What can Buyers and Sellers do to thrive in this market?

The question I have been asked lately by many friends, clients & colleagues is what I predict will happen in the world of real estate in 2019? The real estate market has become a little bit more complicated and there is a lot more for Buyers and Sellers to be aware of and to take into consideration before making a move.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN CANADA?

There is a lot going on in Canada with regards to the economy that has led us into market we are now experiencing. Anyone who has investments and who monitors the stock market will know that stocks did not do well in 2018. The oil industry is in a bit of disarray and the increase in interest rates in the fall of 2018 along with the introduction of new federal mortgage rules has had a huge effect on the economy and a negative impact on both Buyer and Seller confidence. As a result, growth in the housing market overall has slowed. There is talk constantly in the media of a recession although most economists believe this won’t happen. The federal government did not raise interest rates this past month. The economy cannot bear it at this point in time. Rarely do central banks increase rates when an economy is struggling. More consumer money is going towards mortgage and other debt payments and less towards disposable income.

GROWTH IN THE MARKET AND THE FUTURE It is predicted that the Canadian Economy will continue to grow in 2019 although at a slower pace than the last two years. In our area there is low levels of inventory especially in affordable price ranges. This makes it difficult for those first-time buyers looking to enter into the market due to the amount of competition for the product. Demand for these homes will continue to slowly cause prices to rise. There are many buyers who will continue to outgrow their current homes and need to move up and many empty nesters and 28 / 

those closing in on retirement who will continue to downsize. It will continue to be a bit of a Sellers market for homes in certain price ranges BUT some Buyers will have to remain patient until inventory levels rise. The recent (January 2019) slight decrease in interest rates will help consumer confidence and improve affordability for some Buyers.

WHAT SHOULD BUYERS DO? The best thing Buyers can do is to continue saving their money; building up their down payments and continue to pay down debt so that they are ready to purchase when their Realtor finds them the perfect place to call Home!

Find a trusted mortgage broker/mortgage specialist who is experienced and who has your best interests in mind with the ability to provide you with excellent customer service and by offering a wide variety of programs and financing options. They can educate you on the new mortgage rules and work with you to get you a pre-approval or to help you put a plan in place to qualify in the future. Working on credit scores is also important keeping in mind that lenders reserve the best rates for those with great credit! Reviewing your own credit score and report is important to ensure that there are no errors that could negatively affect one’s eligibility to get mortgage financing.

Spring will be here before you know it and once the fist signs of it appear, their will be many buyers out competing for new inventory. Having a plan and a budget (what you’ll need to run your household along with wants and needs) in place along with a financing pre-approval and knowing your criteria for a home will help you act quicker when the right places hits the market.

WHAT SHOULD SELLERS DO?

Home Sellers need to be realistic and re-set their expectations as the market won’t be quite the fever as it was in 2017 into 2018.

According to CREA (Canadian Real Estate Association) stats the number of homes sold through the KWAR-MLS (Multiple Listing Service) was down 11.2 % in 2018 from 2017; there was a 3.4% increase in house prices overall and the average Days on the Market in 2018 was 24 compared to 19 in 2017. The 10-year average was 40 days on the market. Sellers need to keep on top of the local economy, stats and trends in their area.

They need to be ahead of the market to anticipate possible future declines and to be prepared. It is also very important for Sellers to prepare their homes to look their best within their budgets IF they want to yield top dollar when it comes time to sell. Most Buyers today are looking on-line for homes. This means that the quality of the photos and how the home shows can mean the difference of someone setting up an appointment to view a home or not. Sellers need to continually maintain their home and properties so that the curb appeal is strong to get Buyers through the door; to ensure that everything is in good working order i.e. appliances; mechanicals; HVAC/heating/air conditioning systems; electrical is up-to-code and/or has been inspected by the ESA (Electrical Safety Authority) if wiring deficiencies exist or alterations have been completed; sound roofs/ eaves/downspouts are also important; and de-cluttering, donating and packing up what is personal and not in current use and then staging the home certainly helps Buyers imagine themselves living there and brings them closer to making an offer. I am finding in my experience that there are many buyers (especially first-time buyers) who are often pre-qualified for sound mortgage amounts, however; who don’t have extra cash for renovations and who aren’t handy and/or don’t have the time so the more move-inready a Seller’s home is the more saleable it should be.

FEBRUARY is here and we are halfway through this winter with little snow and cold--FEBRUARY is a short month but busy with many celebrations.

February 2nd, 2019 is GROUNDHOG DAY--This is not a public holiday in Canada but areas around parks and some streets in towns may be busy or congested where GROUNDHOG DAY events are popular. The concept first become popular in Canada in 1956 when Wiarton Willie became a household name for his early February weather predictions--according to folklore if he sees his shadow on February 2nd he will return to his burrow, indicating that there will be six more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow, then spring is on the way. As WILLIE'S fame has increased so has WIARTON'S GROUNDHOG DAY become one of the largest winter festivals in Bruce County, Ontario . There are also other famous groundhogs in different parts of Canada such as SHUBENACADIE SAM who is the first groundhog in the country to stick its head out of the hole, GARY THE GROUNDHOG in Ontario, BRANDON BOB in Manitoba and BALZAC BILLY in Alberta.

February 14th, 2019 is VALENTINE'S DAY-- Love, Cupid, hearts, chocolates, cards and flowers are everywhere celebrating love and friendship but where did this holiday of affection come from. The origins of VALENTINE'S DAY are murky. We know that the ancient Romans celebrated the feast of LUPERCALIA, a spring festival, on the 15th of February. With the introduction of Christianity, the holiday moved to the 14th of February--the saint day that celebrated several early Christian martyrs named Valentine. As years passed the holiday grew sweeter. It gained popularity throughout Britain and the rest of Europe. Handmade paper cards became the tokens-du-jour in the Middle Ages. Eventually, the tradition made its way to the New World. The industrial revolution ushered in factory-made cards in the 19th century. In 1913 HALLMARK CARDS of Kansas City began mass producing valentines and it has not been the same since. Today, the holiday is big business--a day to be spoiled by your beloved; some who will break the bank buying jewelry (popular day to propose and buy diamonds); fine dining; chocolates; flowers; and most important the special HALLMARK card.

February 18th, 2019 is FAMILY DAY, a celebration of activities aimed at the whole family. It is a public holiday in five provinces and territories, a day off for the general population with schools and most businesses closed. FAMILY DAY was first held in Alberta in 1990 and proposed by province's former premier, Don Getty, to establish an occasion to counteract what he saw as the erosion of family values in Canadian society. FAMILY DAY is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and to give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families. It was introduced in Saskatchewan in 2007, Ontario in 2008, British Columbia in 2013 and New Brunswick in 2018.

February 18th to 24th, 2019 is HERITAGE WEEK--Since 1974, the third Monday every February has been identified as HERITAGE DAY in Canada. In 1985, the Ontario government designated the third week in February as ONTARIO HERITAGE WEEK, with the federal HERITAGE DAY starting the week. Many heritage organizations and municipalities have used the above as a time to stimulate awareness of heritage resources and issues within the community as well as a time to honor organizations and volunteers who have worked to protect Ontario's irreplaceable heritage resources.

February is also about BLACK HISTORY--it is during this month that Canadians celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the cultural diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today. The commemoration of BLACK HISTORY MONTH dates back to 1926, when Harvard-educated African American historian Carter G. Woodson proposed setting aside a time devoted to honour the accomplishments of African Americans and to heighten awareness of Black history in the United States. This led to the establishment of NEGRO HISTORY WEEK in 1926. Celebrations of Black history began in Canada shortly thereafter. During the early 1970s, the week became known as BLACK HISTORY WEEK. It was expanded into BLACK HISTORY MONTH in 1976. In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as BLACK HISTORY MONTH in Canada following a motion introduced by the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, The Honourable Jean Augustine. In February 2008, Senator Donald Oliver, the first Black man appointed to the Senate, introduced the Motion to Recognize Contributions of Black Canadians and February as BLACK HISTORY MONTH. It received unanimous approval and was adopted on March 04, 2008.

During BLACK HISTORY MONTH one should take the time to read books and literature on the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD which was not a railroad at all but an organization that began in the 1780s to help people escape slavery and reach free states or Canada--it was a secret network of routes and safe houses. Travelling on the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD was dangerous and required luck as much as a guide.

Two UNDERGROUND RAILROAD TOURS are GRIFFIN HOUSE National Historic Site in Ancaster, Ontario or UNCLE TOM'S CABIN Historic Site in Dresden, Ontario. A internet search will find more in the area.

During this month one might also take the time to watch one of the many movies made showing the life of a slave to freedom.

One that made this writer appreciate the history was "ROOTS"--a 1977 TV miniseries based on Alex Haley's 1976 novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family. It is the story of a young African man taken captive in 1750, brought to America by ship, sold as a slave and his life story beyond THE CIVIL WAR. One has so much to be thankful for living in the best of times.

As THE PLATTSVILLE & DISTRICT HERITAGE SOCIETY prepares for our summer display "CRUISING THE 50S AND 60S" each month this year I will add some trivia--these family pictures will be known to all once the name is revealed next month.

Trivia: Era early 1900's - all were born 1917 and before and it is a farm just outside of Bright.

Do hope all have fun trying to find the name of these family pictures--one can always appreciate history of the community.
