A note from the Editor...

Finally, March has come around. Which means Spring is just around the corner and, along with warmer temps, the ability to plan events with the confidence there won’t be a pop-up snow storm that ruins everything!

I think this winter has been the most unpredictable in a very long time. As a mother of a 5-year-old, there have been many mornings, I woke up thinking ‘will there be school or won't there’, not to mention the number of cancelled events due to the unpredictable weather! The thought of Springs arrival I’m sure has everyone excited. Before heading off to bed on Sat. March 9th don’t forget to turn that clock ahead 1 hour in anticipation for that first day of Spring on March 20th – a date that is circled in bright red on my calendar, as though I’m hoping Mother Nature clues in and finally ends this full-on Canadian winter.

Local pair strike GOLD! The Ayr Skating Club is a small town club with a membership of 85.

The club offers a wide variety of programming for skaters of all levels, including Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, CanSkate, as well as StarSkate and Competitive programs.

The 2018-2019 competitive skating season has been one filled with lots of success for two of our skaters, Sophia Kagolovskaya and Kieran MacDonald, and their coach, Carleigh MacDonald.

Kagolovskaya & MacDonald started out their season competing at the North American Series in Toronto, a competition where they represented Canada, and competed against skaters from both Canada and the United States. They finished second in Novice Dance at this event. Throughout the season, they had very successful outings at numerous local competitions, culminating in their gold medal win in Novice Dance at the 2019 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. After winning their national title, they were assigned to their first international assignment, where they represented Canada at the Bavarian Open in Oberstdorf, Germany. Kagolovskaya & MacDonald won the gold medal at this competition, in the Advanced Novice Dance category. With all of their success this season, they are looking forward to moving up to the Junior level next season.

A number of our StarSkate athletes, also coached by MacDonald, have had successful outings at local competitions this year. Our Star 1 skaters, Presley Eby, Keira Mitro, and Hannah Simpson all received Gold or Silver evaluations at their competitions, and our Star 2 Skaters, Paige Butler, Meghan Campbell, Rilee Eby, Emma Martin, Summer Pottruff and Kaylin Wehrli all received Bronze, Silver or Gold evaluations at their competitions. Lily Carmount (Star 5) and Katie Janzen (Star 8) also had successful seasons with podium finishes in their categories.

A common question I am asked is “When is the best time to sell a home?” Usually the most ideal time seems to be between mid-March to Mid-April; however, long a declining number of available homes on the market seems to be pushing this window of opportunity back due to demand. Still, spring and early summer remain your best bets. This is when there is more daylight; the exterior of homes and surrounding property seem to show their best i.e. the landscaping and curb appeal is better due to the grass starting to green; flowers, trees and shrubs starting to bloom; and most Buyers start to come out of hibernation.

In April we are having a Healthy and Unhealthy Foods information night from 7 to 9:00pm in the Optimist Youth Centre. The time is now to start preparing your home to sell in the spring market. Timing is crucial. Missing a few weeks of the prime spring market because a Seller wasn’t prepared may negatively affect the sale price. It is important to start interviewing prospective Realtors to create a game plan. They can give you tips and advice on how best to prepare and stage your home and what (if any) repairs that need to be completed prior to listing. They can also let you know when the most ideal time is to list the property so that you have a time-line to work with as well as give you an opinion of what price they recommend you list your home and property for. Lastly, they will help assist and guide you with regards to making your next move. When you have a competent and successful real estate agent who has experience in helping Sellers and Buyers it can make the whole process less stressful.

The next step is preparing your home for the market by working your way through the following INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE CHECKLISTS (most of which are low cost ways to prepare): EXTERIOR INTERIOR • Reseal driveways • Clean windows • Weed and mulch flowerbeds and gardens • Clean and replace light bulbs and fixtures • Trim shrubs, trees and bushes back • Wash and polish floors • Plant bright flowers and plants • Vacuum and steam clean carpets and tile floors (grout • Clean exterior of windows cleaning) • Paint any faded or peeling paint, if applicable • Wash and dust all surfaces i.e. walls and furniture • Wash siding, if applicable • Organize all closets and storage areas; garages and • Clean and inspect gutters and downspouts to ensure free workshops of debris and that all attachments are on and directing • General de-cluttering i.e. items/clothing/furniture not in water away from the house/structures use. As we enter into March, many people have already thought of, participated in, or begun to think about “spring detoxes”. Before we discuss how we can naturally encourage detoxification, it is important for us to define what a detox is.

A detox (or detoxification) is defined as a process by which the body turns toxic substances into less toxic substances for elimination from the body. Basically a detox is like the “spring cleaning” you do in your home, but for your body. Though this is not generally medically supported – unless for the purposes of addictions and rehabilitations – many of us could benefit from supporting the body’s natural detoxification process.

FOR LOW INCOME & SIMPLE TAX SITUATIONS

A toxin is defined as a “poisonous substance that is produced by living cells or organisms and is capable of causing disease when introduced into the body tissues”. If we are keeping with the spring cleaning example, a toxin might be that piece of food under your couch that, though harmless at first, can eventually start to stink up your house, and eventually cause mold spores and impact health. With this concept in mind, it is important to clean the house (body) regularly in order to prevent disease.

Promoting Detox Daily: A detox doesn’t have to just be done in spring. Though it is the best season for detox programs, detox-promoting activities can be performed everyday! You can make a lifestyle out of allowing your body to detox and eliminate toxins.

The following activities and items are different ways to support this naturally occurring process in the body: 1. Lemon in hot water Start your day off by having a hot glass of water with lemon in it. Not only is this good for making you feel full and energized, but it also helps stimulate the liver (the detox center) to “clean up” your system. This drink can also promote digestion, though cautions should be used in any individuals with a history of gall bladder and liver concerns.

2. Exercise Among the many health benefits that exercise can provide, it can also provide a way to detoxify our bodies. Exercise does so by promoting sweat, which is one of the ways our body removes wastes and toxins from the body.

3. Eat 5-8 servings of vegetables and 3 servings of fruit each day Though this recommendation may seem like a tall order, fruits and vegetables have many nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to health. Along with their nutritional value, they can also improve digestion. By improving “transit time” (i.e. helping you have a bowel movement), they help your body to detox, as having a bowel movement daily is another way our body detoxifies.

We have two of the biggest, fattest, juiciest squirrels who have been visiting us at 6am and 11pm daily. I know who they are, and I know exactly what they’re doing. They’re living rent-free in my attic! Every night for the last week or two, like clockwork we hear them scurrying up onto the roof, and then tap dancing across every square inch into what I can only assume is their special spot which just happens to be directly above my bed. Not cool squirrels. Not cool!

They engage in what I will say “squirrel related activities” (from my limited experience) which sounds like one is killing the other in a screeching-scratching match. (I think they’re getting ready for the mating season, but this is a PG magazine!) Bottom line: the squirrels gotta go.

Was I flattered that they choose our house to snuggle up in to stay warm and dry? Nope! Do I appreciate their shenanigans early morning or late at night? Heck no! So how was I going to get those squirrels to go? A plan. I just needed a plan.

I have a best friend who has been there for me for as long as I can remember. He’s always got my back. He was the first person I thought of for this task. I trust him and I knew he would help. He’s tall, strong and agile – just what this operation needed!

So at 8 am on a Saturday morning, here he comes with a ladder, strobe lights, and a squirrels-gotta-go-attitude. I had my tool kit ready with a live cage, foam spray, repellent spray and that same attitude. We rigged everything up, got everything in place and felt that we had secured the premises so as not to let those pesky squirrels back in again!

From the sounds of it, I think there were probably 100 up their partying every day, but realistically probably only two. I even fibbed to my son and told him that they were a rare breed of ‘elephant squirrels’ which had him pretty freaked out until I admitted the truth ( hey – they did sound pretty elephant-y stomping around and carrying on!)

We all felt pretty sure that the precautions and measures that we put in place would not allow the squirrel's entry back into the attic - so they’d been officially evicted. They were chewing stuff up, running a muck, keeping us up, not letting us sleep, driving us nuts, and worrying us. Sound familiar?

HOW TO PLAY :

Let’s give these squirrels names. How about: “Stress and Anxiety.” After all, that’s what keeps so many of us up at night, and deters us from being able to live wholly and fully in the present moment, right? And let’s just say that the proverbial house and attic are our bodies and brains. The body is the house, and the brains (or mind) is the attic. How often have we let our own squirrels bury their way into our ‘attics’ and wreak havoc on us? What precautions, plans, and measures do you take to deal and heal with the squirrels inside your attic? More importantly, how many squirrels are you letting up there? One is too many, in my opinion.

What's the Difference?

Cappuccino is an espresso-based drink, of Italian origin, with 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 wet foamed milk. The difference between a latte and a cappuccino is the milk content.

Latte has a lot of milk, whereas cappuccino is a strong coffee.

So what can you do to evict these squirrels and use this example as a mindful lesson in your life?

1. Who are the squirrels? Identify them. Stress? Anxiety? Fear? Write them all down.

2. How can you begin to work at eliminating these squirrels? Not just getting rid of them, but actually dealing and healing?

3. Who can you count on? Who has your back? Who can help you, support you, and be on your ‘squirrels-gotta-go’ team?

4. How can you properly and fully secure your mind/brain so as not to let these squirrels reek havoc?

Mindfulness means paying attention, being in the moment, being fully here and now. I want to encourage you to try to live your live squirrel-free – and see what kind of joy and present-moment awareness you can invite into your life, your house, your body, your attic and your mind.

DID YOU KNOW: Librarians used to have to learn a specific style of handwriting “Library hand” was a specific rounded style of cursive script that was developed to standardize handwriting, and was taught in schools for librarians from the 19th century into the mid-20th century. Mark: I am from New Dundee, in fact, my family lives just a few houses down the street.

Danny: We opened the tea room at first and later upgraded to the restaurant. Soon thereafter we started selling home décor and that lasted for a couple of years, but it was the boutique that brought us success and now accounts for half our business.

Mark: The building was for sale for 7 years and we looked at it for 3 before we bought it. Danny and I are handy, so we did a lot of the work ourselves.

Danny: This building had a history for being a tea room and lunch place, so we started with that. All the staff that worked for the previous owners came to work for us and with them brought the recipe for the “Butter Milk Scones” which was passed onto them from the previous owners dating back to the ’70s. Prior to moving to Ontario from Montreal, I had no idea what High Tea and Afternoon Tea was because it’s a British Tradition - Danny laughs.

What sets the New Dundee Emporium apart?

I had the pleasure of having a sit-down interview with Danny Duchesne & Mark Harrison, owners of the renowned New Dundee Emporium to discuss their business and what led to their success.

In business for over 15 years, The New Dundee Emporium is in the heart of the beautiful town of New Dundee, Ontario. The circa 1887 building situated on ½ an acre property on 169 Front Street, New Dundee, offers a welcoming atmosphere, friendly smiles, and eye candy for all things tasty and beautiful.

Mark: Nothing we serve is store bought, nothing comes from containers or bags.

Danny: Everything is made from scratch and all ingredients are Canadian.

Describe your food offerings. What are the most popular items on the menu and why?

Danny: Warm seafood salad and the quiche. Believe it or not, the quiche is very popular, don’t know what the fuzz is all about -Danny laughs.

Mark: The featured potato crusted cod is also very popular on Fridays, and Eggs Benedict on Sundays. There really isn’t anything specific, if we don’t see something moving, we wouldn’t have it on the menu.

Danny: People eat with their eyes, if the restaurant is busy, they see a dish come out, they want to order it as well.

Dinner rolls are another item. Baked fresh every morning!

Mark: They are awesome! They're like your Grandmas warm, sweet, and yeasty. Not a lot of places serve a basket of bread anymore, it’s extra at most places but not at New Dundee.

Tell me a little about your annual events.

Mark: Valentine’s dinner is very popular and the St. Patties week “Potato pancakes” is something you definitely won't want to miss. High tea events are very popular. Last year we celebrated the birth of the Royal Princess Charlotte and donated some of the proceeds to Pride Stables.

Danny: Titanic dinner is a huge event, clients dress up and impersonate the characters, guests are given a boarding pass and the end of the evening they are told whether they survived or not.

Mark: We use spray water bottles and swing the lamps -Mark laughs.

Danny: I did my research and copy the food the guests ate the evening the Titanic sank.

What’s next for the New Dundee Emporium?

Danny: We are not sure, but we are always evolving, so I think the next step will be the expansion of the frozen takeaway food line. Right now, TJC Food in Kitchener sells some of our frozen food selection. So, I think that the division of the already prepared homemade frozen cooked food is where our expansion is going to be.

Mark: It’s a good way of promoting our business as well. It works as a calling card. People buy our frozen food, serve it to their friends or family and that in turn attracts people to our location.

What is one piece of advice would you give someone opening a new restaurant or becoming a chef?

Danny: This is a two-part answer. It’s not an easy job. You must do it with passion because if it’s glamour or money you’re looking for, don’t do it. You will work long hours, weekends, and holidays. You don’t have a normal schedule. Passion is key. As for running a restaurant, listen to your customer, please your customer, don’t impose what you think will work, listen.

Mark: Leave your ego at the door. I find with a lot of people who are going to school to learn a craft or a skill, teachers fill their heads with the idea that once they teach you this, you can open your own business. Gain the experience. You should waste someone else’s money to learn and make mistakes first, don’t do it on your dime because what works in one location won’t necessarily work in another.

Tell me about the boutique.

Mark: The service we offer at the boutique is what keeps people coming back.

Danny : And they have one on one service because Mark is the fashion guru -Danny laughs.

Mark : I do a lot of public speaking. So, I go to various women’s groups and do a “What not to wear.” Many women have had horrible shopping experiences by either being oversold or lied to. I would rather them hold something and say, “Oh my god I love this!” and remember that versus “what was I thinking?” “how did I get suckered into that?” or “there’s another thing that’s going in the back of my closet.

So that’s the success. I have a lot of business people that come out and need pieces they can multipurpose and I challenge them to step out of their comfort zone.

There’s an app for that! It’s no secret that most us love our smartphones perhaps a little too much.

The desire to unplug is growing among people who see 24/7 connectedness as damaging to their mental health. Many of us feel anxiety at the very thought of being without our phone and the access it offers to the internet. The term for this affliction is nomophobia ("no mobile phone phobia"). So, the question is, how much smartphone use is too much?

If you believe the groundhog in 2019 our WIARTON WILLIE is predicting an early spring as he did not see his shadow on the 2nd--we all got chocolate and roses on the 14th--everyone had a fantastic family day on the 18th and it is hoped one took the time to read up or explore a museum for some Black History knowledge thru out all of February.

Of course March will come in like a lion and out like a lamb--seems straight forward enough in that it's still winter and cold when it arrives and by the end of the month spring has begun--there are few theories on the origin of this saying but one is in the starsLEO at the beginning of the month and ARIES at the end. This year the 5th will be SHROVE TUESDAY /PANCAKE DAY, the last day of feasting before LENT begins on the following day, ASH WEDNESDAY. It's called so due to the custom of eating pancakes on this day, a tradition that comes from a time when any remaining rich foods were eaten on the day before LENT to use them up before fasting began. It's observed mainly in English-speaking countries. It is a movable feast whose date is determined by EASTER and celebrated exactly 47 days before EASTER SUNDAY. This date can vary as early as February 3rd to as late as March 9th. BEWARE OF THE IDES OF MARCH on the 15th, an old familiar saying but where did it originate and what's there to fear? The IDES is actually a day that comes about every month not just March. The Romans tracked time much differently than we do now, with months divided into groupings of days counted before certain named days: the IDES being the middle. The IDES OF MARCH is familiar because it is the date that the Roman statesman Julius Caesar was assassinated and thus the immortal words "BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH" are uttered in William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar to the leader by a fortune-teller. Other bad things have happened on March 15 of course, but there's probably no reason to beware of March's IDES more than the IDES of any other month.

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY or the FEAST OF SAINT PATRICK is a cultural and religious celebration held on the 17th, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of IRELAND and a public holiday in IRELAND. Irish descendants all over the world celebrate with public parades and festivals, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. They are joined by the general public and thus we have IRISH STEW and GREEN BEER served and merriment by all. In recent years, there has been criticism of Saint Patrick's Day celebrations for having become too commercialized and for fostering negative stereotypes of the Irish people.

And now to reveal our trivia pictures: The family is ARTHUR LEO and IDA MABEL BULLOCK CURRAH who were married in 1899 and in 1901 bought "THE OAKS" just west of Bright from his mother REBECCA HUTCHISON CURRAH to raise their family--Arthur's birth home. Their girls in the picture are Louie-1901; Blanche-1904; Belle-1907; Dora1910; Nell-1911; Mary-1915 and Hazel-1917--these pictures are taken circa 1920. In 1923 they added Beverly, their only boy to the mix of girls. Mary Currah Allen is the little girl between the Herefords and she was a member of the community until her death.

ARTHUR LEO was a man of many accomplishments--he built the large, 2 storey red brick house; he set the slab of concrete in the front wall with "THE OAKS 1901" and in the back wall was another "ARTHUR L. CURRAH"; he loved oak trees and planted many from acorn seed around his house and farm starting reforestation in a time when many a farmer were vigorously cutting down trees; he raised a good sized purebred Hereford herd showing them at the CNE and local fairs winning many ribbons and prizes; he loved to recite and write poetry of which many have survived; he made fancy canes having sent one to King George in 1951 and Winston Churchill in 1952 even receiving replies and perhaps your family may have one in their possession; he loved to play the piano, mouth organ, and auto harp; he was a farmer with a large family so he compromised to serve his county in WW1 by going to Detroit to work in the ammunitions factory during slack winter months on the farm.

His daughter Belle, a teacher, wrote her personal story "THE THIRD ACORN AT THE OAKS: Roots but no tree, just me" which compiled each of her sibling's story into one. In her retirement, she wrote "THE CURRAH FAMILY STORY" from 26 /

many years of collecting CURRAH pictures and a visit to Alston, Cumberland County, England home of the original family settlers.

This collection of writings from Belle make for an afternoon of interesting research at the OXFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY on Light Street in Woodstock. They are open five days a week from ten to four and staffed by volunteers who are readily available to help you find your family roots with shelves of history and folklore from the community. I have attached a couple more pictures from the 1920's of THE OAKS with family on the front lawn and no oak trees yet and one of some of the family heading out for a buggy ride--a much more simple time in life.

And now for our bit of TRIVIA or maybe another word would be "PICTURE FROM THE PAST"--this is a school picture from the community and not even I know all the persons in this picture, but someone out there does and can be of help to name everyone in the picture.

Spicy Salmon Patties

Finding something exciting, simple and healthy to make is my kryptonite. Pleasing everyone takes the fun out of making food for me. I agonized for hours about what I will make and usually end up going back to the slow cooker on Sundays to prepare meals for the week. I am definitely not that Wonder Woman who has time to make long meals after work, before or after lessons and bedtimes. We’ve recently gone back to canned foods because they’re quick and easy and in the cupboard when I don’t make it out to the grocery store and I don’t find frozen meat to be the same as a butcher shop and market fresh meat. As a result, I stumbled across this old recipe that my mom used to make for us when I was little. Easy, fast, delicious AND healthy. Mom win! It’s one to keep for summer barbecues and is great cold for picnics. Keep this one handy and bring on the summer weather!

Ingredients: 1 tsp garlic powder 3 cans 6oz Atlantic Salmon 1 tsp oregano 1 ½ cups Ritz Crackers, crushed 1 tsp thyme 1 cup mayonnaise ½ tsp paprika ¼ cup panko bread crumbs ¼ tsp cayenne pepper ¼ cup minced red onion 1 stalk minced celery Dip: 1 minced jalapeno ½ cup mayonnaise 2 tsp mustard 1 tbsp hot sauce 1 tsp black pepper 1 pinch black pepper Directions: 1.

Drain salmon and set aside.

In a large bowl combine crackers, onion, celery, jalapeño, mayonnaise, mustard and spices.

3.

Fold in salmon and panko crumbs and make into patties (4 large or 8 small).

Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown patties about 4-5 minutes on either side for large size and 3-4 minutes for small size.

5.

Remove to paper towel and pat to get rid of excess oil.

6.

Mix dip ingredients and serve on top of large patties or as dip for appetizer sized.
