Healthy lunches for Back-to-School Going back-to-school can be a stressful time of year for parents and children. Making healthy lunches that are school-approved can often add to that stress. Some fun and healthy options are listed below, but one of the best things you can do for your child is give them a choice.

Giving a choice does not mean giving them free-range, but it does mean allowing them to choose between two options. Options help empower your child and increase the likelihood that they will eat their healthy lunch (and yes we recognize that this is easier said than done!).

Lunch Ideas: • Salads: Salads do not have to be boring and can include your child’s favourite colours or vegetables.

Adding in special ingredients like craisins, strawberries, seeds, croutons, and star – shaped peppers can provide variety and keep your little student happy and healthy.

Some salad ideas might include Greek salads, lettuce based salads, taco salads, and bean salads.

• Build-Your-Own-Lunch: using options such as rice crackers with tuna, salmon, egg salad, or hummus with cut veggies. Encourage your child to build a creation and be their own Godzilla that devours it after!

• Meat/alternative and a Vegetable: a meat/alternative such as chicken drum sticks, meat loaf, sausages, hard boiled eggs, etc.; and cut vegetables are a simple, but quick option especially if there are left-overs in the refrigerator. Consider using your child’s favourite supper-time meal or an appealing left over as a healthy lunch option. Combining left-overs into options such as a rice bowl might make another interesting but tasty lunch option.

• Kabobs: for some parents, this may not be an appropriate option because of the wood kabob.

Consider making substitutions such as pretzel sticks for the kabobs to add another dietary element to your child’s lunch.

• Fresh Rolls: fresh spring rolls are a portable lunch that can be packed full of vegetables. This lunch idea can be made into a dip-able option by adding some Thai sauce on the side.

• Wraps: making wraps from lettuce can add a fun twist with increased vegetables. Adding a protein source on top can increase the nutritional value of this lunch.

A protein source might include tuna salad, egg salad, or chicken salad.

• Tacos: making sure to use appropriate portions of your proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber; tacos can be a fun and easy option for most students. Simply make sure to increase the amount of vegetables or have some extra vegetables on the side!

Not all of these choices are going to be winners for your child, or they may be out-right unrealistic. At the end of the day, you have to pick your battles and a “healthy” lunch may not be one of them. If you cannot encourage your child to eat their vegetables or healthy options at lunch, try not to sweat it, and simply compensate at a later or earlier meal where it might be more realistic.

A kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of kids while they were drawing.

She would occasionally walk around to see each child’s work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

• Pasta: brown rice pasta or zoodles (Zucchini noodles) with a tomato sauce make a fun substitute to your classic lunch. I always tell my patients to “doctor-up” these choices by adding in extra vegetables.

• Pizza: pizza does not have to be an “unhealthy” choice. Simply cut down on the cheese (or leave it out entirely), and consider making substitutions such as cauliflower for wheat dough, and add extra vegetables onto the base. All of these can make your pizza a wiser choice for lunches.

RRSPs and TFSAs – using your savings With so many savings options available, it can be challenging to find the right fit for your needs. RRSPs and TFSAs are two popular savings vehicles. Both options are government registered and provide tax-advantaged savings. Understanding the differences and benefits of both will help you make the best decision for you, now and in the future.

The registered savings benefit:

When you put money into a registered or non-registered account, it’s like planting a seed to grow a tree. Income generated from investments held within a non-registered account is usually taxed every year. Gains in the value of investments held within a non-registered account are also taxable when sold. It’s like pruning the tree, slowing some of its growth.

This isn’t the case with money held within an RRSP or TFSA. This characteristic of registered accounts can help your money grow faster – it’s like watering the tree. The unique tax treatment of RRSPs and TFSAs, and the benefit of compounded growth, can mean a significant difference to your investments over time.

Tax-advantaged growth: Contributions to an RRSP give you an upfront tax benefit. You’ll receive a tax receipt for the contribution amount which can offset your income when filing your annual income taxes.

Any gains in the value of the investments in an RRSP are tax deferred. You’ll only pay income tax on this money when it’s withdrawn from your RRSP at a later date. If you wait to withdraw money from your RRSP until retirement, you’ll likely pay lower taxes because your annual income may be less than when you were working.

Unlike RRSPs, TFSAs don’t give you an upfront tax benefit. TFSA contributions are made with after-tax dollars. Any increase in the value of your TFSA is tax free. You won’t pay any taxes on money you withdraw at a later date.

Until what age can you contribute?

RRSP • No minimum age to contribute, but you must be earning income.1,2 • Maximum age to contribute is 71.

• You must convert your RRSP into an income annuity or a registered retirement income fund (RRIF) by Dec. 31 of the year that you turn 71.

TFSA • Must be 18 or older.

• Valid social insurance number required.

• Must be a resident of Canada.

• You can make contributions every year, regardless of age.

What’s best for me?

There’s no hard and fast rule on which type of savings account is better. Both RRSPs and TFSAs are good choices for longterm savings, but there are a few key factors to consider when making a decision: • If you’ll need to withdraw money in the near future, a TFSA is better suited for meeting short-term goals.

• If you’re able to maximize contributions to both account types, this generally makes more sense than putting money into a non-registered account.

• If you must choose one option, consider whether your total annual income is likely to increase or decrease over time.

• If you expect your income to increase, it may be a good strategy to contribute to a TFSA now, when you’re paying less income tax.

• Contributing to an RRSP later when you’re earning a higher income may give you a bigger upfront tax receipt at that time.

Plattsville Skating Club Learn-to-Skate/Canskate and Junior registration form is now available!

Learn-to-Skate/Canskate is for new and beginner skaters, and suitable for kids interested in future hockey, figure skating, ringette, or recreational skating.

This year we are offering an amazing low rate of $175 to skate once per week from September to March! (Yes, our low fee is only approximately $7.60 per week!)

We have also secured FREE loaner skates for Learn-toSkate/Canskate kids from Edee's in Listowel, to make this year's Learn-to-Skate/Canskate even more affordable for all families.

Our junior session is suitable for those who have graduated Canskate and/or are interested in learn more skills for figure skating or recreational skating. The junior session is great for kids of any age who want to improve their skating skills, and is offered in one coached session per week, plus an optional second weekly session for extra ice time and optional private lesson. A piece of History

to return to England separately. However, on February 20, 1890 Birchall telegraphed Benwell’s father in England, saying that his son had agreed to the investment and he should immediately wire over 500 pounds. Three days later hunters found a body in a swamp in Princeton, Ontario. Clothing tags had been removed, and a watch was found close to the body. Still in Buffalo, one of Birchall’s investors saw a picture of the body in a newspaper and recognized him as Benwell. He traveled to Ontario to identify the body and speak with police.

Princeton & the Benwell Swamp

Sometimes we don’t realize the most interesting stories are right beneath our nose. Princeton, ON has a piece of history that is suiting for a big screen murder mystery movie! It all started on February 21, 1890, two woodsmen working in the densely wooded Blenheim Swamp stumble upon the dead body of a young Englishman who had been killed by two gunshot wounds to the head. He was identified as Frederick Benwell - and the murderer was a conman by the name of Reginald Birchall - but who was Reginal Birchall?

Reginald Birchall (aka Lord Frederick A. Somerset) was a British conman, born into a wealthy family in Lancashire, England in May 1866. Birchall entered the Lincoln College, Oxford in 1885. While at Lincoln, Birchall founded the Black and Tan Club... and spent his time partying and incurring debt. In 1888 Birchall was forced to leave college and sell off his is inheritance to pay his debts. That same year he paid 600 pounds for an estate in Woodstock, Ontario.

After eloping with his fiancee, the couple traveled to Canada.

Once they arrived in Woodstock, they discovered that the property was a small farm, not an estate. After six months of creating more debt in Woodstock, the couple returned to England.

Reginald Birchall

Once in England, Birchall concocted a scheme to defraud several wealthy people. He took out an ad in a London newspaper claiming to be the owner of a prosperous horse farm in Canada who was looking for investors. His plan was to take the money, place bets in the Derby horse race, and pay back the investors with his winnings. However the British investors wanted to inspect the Canadian farm and its financial records before investing.

One of those investors was Frederick C. Benwell - In Feb.1890, the Birchalls and the investors arrived in New York City and then traveled to Buffalo, New York. At this point, Birchall took Frederick Benwell, the son of the biggest potential investor, to Woodstock to view the farm. After arriving near Woodstock, Birchall led Benwell into the woods, then shot him twice in the back of the head. Birchall then returned to Buffalo, telling the other investors that Benwell had decided

named Richardson arrived in Princeton in the 1880s and befriended a few people, who noted he was a ‘crack’ shot with a rifle. Richardson announced plans to buy a farm and settle down to marry a local woman, Ms. Rutherford, before he suddenly disappeared. In 1882, Jesse James was shot and killed

by Robert Ford, the story appeared in the newspaper with a photo of Jesse James... some in Princeton swore was Richardson.

Birchall was arrested in Niagara Falls, Ontario on March 3 1890 and transported back to Princeton, Ontario. Birchall denied murdering Benwell.

On September 22, Birchall’s trial started at Woodstock’s Town Hall.

Given that both the suspect and the victim were members of the British aristocracy, the trial garnered substantial attention. News organizations from England, France, Germany and Italy covered the trial. Birchall was convicted of murder based on circumstantial evidence and sentenced to death on September 30, 1890. Birchall professed his innocence to the end. He wrote a long account of the affair while in prison. This memoir was published in an attempt to create an income for his wife after his death.

Birchall was hanged on November 14, 1890. He was buried in the court yard of the Woodstock jail, where he still remains. Frederick Benwell is buried in the Princeton Cemetery.

Oxford County Library is inviting book-lovers across the county to participate in its first annual Oxford Reads initiative. The program encourages reading and community discussion through one featured book that highlights a variety of important themes that relate to the rich history of Oxford County.

In its inaugural year, Oxford Reads is asking community members to join the initiative by reading Linda Spalding’s The Purchase, winner of the 2012 Governor General’s Award for Fiction.

She graduated as a Registered Massage Therapist from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 2015 and soon after was on a path to open up her own clinic.

Summertime is the best time to spend outside! The shining sun and warm weather brings out the best in people and in nature! Not only is it too hot to turn on the stove and oven, it’s also depressing having to spend the day inside cooking, so some of my favourite recipes for the summer involve summer salads and foods that can go straight from the garden or market to the plate with little-to-no cooking time required. Here’s one of my favourite summer salad recipes that incorporates in-season vegetables that are at the peak of freshness and are also readily available at home, the market or in-store!

1 cup of green beans * S​ ee note below 1 cup of yellow beans * 1 cup of kidney beans * 1 cup of chickpeas (garbanzo beans) * ½ cup of diced red onion ¼ cup of parsley 2 cloves of diced garlic ½ cup of olive oil ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp of sugar (if needed to taste) Salt & pepper to taste Garnish with chopped green onion to taste

* If you are using fresh beans you can choose to use them washed and raw or quickly blanch them in a pot of boiling water for 3-5 minutes. If blanching run through cold water once boiled to prevent overcooking. * If you are using canned beans rinse well and drain before using.

Directions: 1.

Mix beans in bowl and set aside.

Mix onion, parsley, garlic, oil, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper together adjusting for personal taste.

3. Place bean and dressing mixture together and let cool and soak at least 1-2 hours before serving for best flavour. Garnish with green onion to taste.

Dave and I purchased the store in November 2015. I met Dave on his Grandparent's farm located across from my parents house on Line 41 back in 1985. I spent many days on the farm with Herbie & Verna. THE PLATTSVILLE & DISTRICT HERITAGE SOCIETY THE PLATTSVILLE & DISTRICT HERITAGE SOCIETY is where the past meets the present to preserve for the future. Our objective is to promote and encourage interest in the history of Plattsville and surrounding district of Bright, Chesterfield, Ratho & Washington. An enthusiastic group of history buffs in the area formed the Society in 2001 from pioneer families of the district--some of those being BELL; BAIRD; CURRAH; GOFTON; HALL; HARMER; HEWITT; HOFSTETTER; HARRISON; MURRAY; TEW; & WOOLCOTT. Our Society at present meets at 7:30PM on the last Monday of the month at the CHESTERFIELD ARCHIVES/MUSEUM or known in the community as the former Chesterfield United Church. It is located at #816661, Township Road 22 (two roads north of Bright and one road west of Plattsville). During the winter months from November to March we move our meeting to SHAKERS RESTAURANT in the village of Plattsville to keep toasty warm and enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate on those cold winter nights All are welcome to join our Society--$10.00 per person or $20.00 per family. During the summer we involve the community in a display and this year it was "OPEN THE DOOR TO CHRISTMAS" wherein we had almost 40 full-sized decorated trees showing different themes and time frames through out the years, along with wreaths, snow globes, angels, nativity sets, village pieces, train sets, stockings, Santas, jewellery, etc or anything Christmas--SANTA in his summer attire joined us on some Saturdays much to the delight of the children who also decorated gingerbread cookies to take home.

Some of our past displays have been 2015--A Gathering of Quilts in May and Interactive Toy and Game Exhibit in July & August; 2016--Weddings Thru The Ages in June & July with a Trousseau Tea and 2017--Windows to the Past in celebration of Canada's 150th in May, June & July. During the year we have a speaker or speakers at selective meetings and always have a Remembrance Day Service at the Cenotaph in the Cemetery adjoining the Archives/Museum. During the time when a display is not in progress the archives/museum has some artifacts on display and an opening can be arranged for viewing.
