Important facts about Sunscreen

A Summer Hiatus...

Finally, we can feel that glorious month of Summer just around the corner. Vacation time inches closer, the smell of BBQ's waft through the air, kids scurry around on bikes and scooters, and we get to dust off our summer sandals... freeing happy toes everywhere.

1) Sunscreen is protective. Sunscreen does protect your skin from the sun’s rays when used as directed. However, some research suggests that sunscreen users get burned frequently, which may be because they use too little, apply it/reapply it too late, or use it to engage in otherwise unsafe sun exposure, like staying out longer or not wearing protective clothing.

2) You have to use a lot. That means a shot glass full to cover the full body, a fourth to a half teaspoon for the face.

Studies have shown that consumers use much less sunscreen than is needed to effectively protect, so use more than you think you need or get a measuring spoon!

3) Don’t use it solo; it’s important to use a combination of sun safety approaches for effective sun protection.

Sunscreen isn’t an all-protective force field. It is intended to be combined with other sun-safety approaches, like covering up with clothing, staying in the shade, wearing a hat, and scheduling activities to avoid times of day when the sun is most intense (10AM – 4PM).

4) Coconut oil is not a good sunscreen. Although some sunscreens contain coconut oil, the oil itself is not adequate to prevent skin damage. Of course, we can't forget Father's Day on June 16th. Take time to honour the men who show up, who love, who mentor, who care - let them know how they've impacted your life.

This is a challenging day for the many mourning the loss of a father or grandfather. Spend time with family sharing memories, celebrate him & how much he meant to you, keeping loved ones alive in our hearts forever.

On June 21st at 10:54am the Summer Solstice begins! This solstice marks the longest day of the year. Early dawns, late sunsets, short nights, long warm days. I cannot think of a better reason to celebrate - best of all it falls on a Friday which means it's time to start planning that outdoor patio Summer party!

This month is also bittersweet for me, with the thrill of summer around the corner I can't help but be a little saddened at our decision to put Small Town Life on hold while we reassess the direction of the magazine. Many may not know I have a day job that takes up my weekdays, and recently have received a career advancement that is quite exciting & impossible to turn down. I also have a beautiful 5-year old that requires my attention and our weekends should be spent making memories.

Creating this little community magazine has been my passion, and the amazing people I have met through this endeavour has been the best part of this experience. Many thanks go to every supporter, follower and advertiser that has contributed to making my publishing dream come true - I am extremely grateful to you. I also want to thank a couple brilliant Gems in my life; Ingrid Hicks & Wendy Held who supported and helped me create this publication, it NEVER would have been possible without you and your endless support!

Naturopathic Essentials for Camping by Dr. Elisha Cook, ND When camping, you want to spend as much time in the great outdoors as possible, and nothing is more frustrating than having to run back to civilization to grab those last minute items to make the experience more enjoyable. In an effort to try and prevent those annoying trips back to civilization, there may be some extra naturopathic supplies that can help. Aside from the camping essentials such as a tent, sleeping bag, first aid kit, etc., there may be some extra items in your kitchen pantry or medicine cabinet that can be surprisingly more helpful than maybe you thought.

Majority of the items outlined below can be used multiple ways and for multiple situations. These multiple situations may involve such discomforts of camping like altered regularity to your bowel movements (constipation or diarrhea), affected sleep, bee stings, bumps and scrapes, dehydration, muscle cramps, bad breath, and bug bites. It is important to keep in mind that these items do not replace the need to seek medical attention in the event of experiencing certain signs and symptoms.

1. COCONUT WATER – coconut water acts as a great electrolyte which can be beneficial for those who are quite active while camping. It can help to nourish muscles and keep you hydrated – and hopefully prevent some muscle cramping. In addition, it can help replenish those experiencing diarrhea, due to the potential to become dehydrated.

2. ESSENTIAL OILS – everyone has their own preference

For Father’s Day, here are three famous fathers worthy of note.

for which essential oils they like, but I will recommend several of my favourites. Citronella and vanilla essential oils can both be beneficial as bug repellents. Using a couple of drops on your neck, wrist or ankles may help to ward off these pests. Keeping in mind that your sleep may be impacted while camping, having some lavender essential oil on hand may be helpful to encourage you to sleep.

3. HOMEOPATHICS – Homeopathics can be quite useful for a variety of different concerns. In particular, Arnica and Apis can be beneficial for trauma and bee stings respectively. However, it is best to consult with a naturopathic doctor or homeopath to determine the right dosing for you.

4. PEPPERMINT TEA – Peppermint tea is a powerful therapeutic tool, because it can help with so many potential problems that could happen with camping. It can help to encourage sleep, settle upset stomachs, encourage regular bowel movements (in the event of constipation), and fight infections. In addition, the peppermint tea bag can be applied topically (when cooled enough) over bug bites to help decrease the irritation and help prevent infection.

5. COCONUT OIL – Coconut oil and coconut water are quite different. Though they have similar constituents, they can help in different ways. Coconut oil can act as a great fungal infection fighter topically. In addition, using coconut oil for oil pulling can be beneficial if you cannot use toothpaste while camping. Oil pulling involves swishing some coconut oil around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. This helps to keep your breath nice and fresh. Interestingly, coconut oil also has an SPF between 4 and 6, and can help moisturize dry skin.

These recommendations should not replace the need to seek medical attention when warranted, but it is hoped that these might make your summer camping trips more enjoyable!

Gift ideas for every kind of dad Seeing as every dad is unique in his own right, why not give him something that reflects the person you love so much? To help get you inspired, here are a few gift ideas for every type of dad.

THE FOODIE: Does your father enjoy a gourmet spread? Between craft beers, good wines, fine cheeses, sweet treats — like rich chocolates and gourmet candies — local produce, and other mouth-watering delicacies, there are many options to appeal to your dad’s taste buds.

THE THINKER: There’s nothing like a board game or puzzle book to get Dad’s grey matter going. You can also surprise him with a documentary series or a subscription to a scientific magazine to quench his thirst for knowledge.

Father’s Day lineup: a day dedicated to Dad Does your kids’ dad deserve more than a tie and a hug for Father’s Day? This year, help your children celebrate their old man by dedicating the whole day to him.

MORNING Breakfast in bed is the perfect way to kick off Father’s Day. Older kids can help prepare and serve the meal, and little ones can decorate the serving tray or table. Excellent service is mandatory on such an important day, so everyone will need to be on their best behaviour.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN (1889 – 1977) Silent film star Charlie Chaplin had 11 children, 10 who survived childhood. His youngest son was born when he was 73 years old, making Chaplin one of the oldest famous fathers in history. Performing clearly ran in the family. Many of the Chaplin children followed in their father’s footsteps and became actors themselves.

STEPHEN HAWKING (1942 – 2018) The theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking became famous after authoring the book, A Brief History of Time. He became equally well known for his disability-inducing struggle with ALS and the computer that allowed him to communicate using a single muscle in his cheek. Revered as a scientist and as a role model for people with disabilities, it may come as a surprise to some that Hawking fathered three children. He remained close to his kids until he died at the age of 76.

PRINCE WILLIAM (1982) The future king of England has a very important job that has nothing to do with the crown. It’s raising his three children with his wife, Catherine. His mother, Diana, was famously intent on giving her sons a normal childhood, and he’s carrying on the tradition with his own kids. He’s even gone as far as asking for the Queen’s permission to break with royal convention in order to travel on the same airplane as his kids.

Happy Father’s Day to all dads, famous or otherwise.

AFTERNOON If he loves his car almost as much as he loves his kids, treat him to a car wash at home. Once the car is looking shiny and new, take a ride to the activity of Dad’s choice.

The whole family is sure to enjoy whatever he picks, whether it’s mini-golf, the ice cream shop or the park.

NIGHT End the day with a movie marathon at home. Let Dad decide what you watch and nosh on. If he loves Mexican food, make nachos. If he appreciates the classic movie snacks, you can’t go wrong with buttery popcorn. And don’t forget to pick up his favourite candy so he can satisfy his sweet tooth.

Help your young adults budget effectively for venturing out on their own.

Budgeting isn’t something teenagers often think of but, before they know it, they’re applying to schools, sorting through admission offers and packing their bags.

Accepting a university or college offer marks one of the largest financial commitments they’ll make in their lifetime.

As parents to teens preparing to take the leap into higher education, it’s crucial you start the money management process early.

Do your homework A great way to learn the value of money and the importance of saving is to talk with your teen and break down the costs associated with attending university or college. If they have an understanding of where their money is going, they’ll gain a new perspective on their spending and saving habits.

In the early stages of planning, it’s also important to look for financial assistance opportunities. With your teen, search for scholarships, grants or bursaries they can apply for. This is an easy way to get a head start on saving.

Creating a student budget If your teen is just beginning their post-secondary education, take time to help them learn how to manage their monthly expenses by creating a budget to fit their new lifestyle. Consider these things when creating a budget with them: Evaluate sources of income: • Will they be working during the school year? If so, be sure to incorporate their income into their budget. Have them look for jobs on campus – these positions generally have flexible hours and can work around a class schedule.

• If you’re helping your teen financially, create a clear arrangement to send funds at set intervals to help them avoid running out of money, Determine variable and fixed expenses: • Ensure they have a firm understanding of variable and fixed expenses – what expenses are set in stone, versus expenses that can change on a monthly basis? This will help them budget their spending effectively.

• Have them continually monitor their expenses and, when necessary, cut back on things such as shopping, entertainment and data & Internet plans.

Set financial goals.

• Is your teen planning to take a spring break trip? Don’t forget to factor that into their budget.

• Are they planning to take a course over the summer? Encourage them to continue to apply for scholarships and bursaries throughout university to help pay for their school costs.

Be smart.

• Your teen should be looking for money-saving ideas. Encourage them to suggest useful gift cards (i.e. grocery stores and bookstores), instead of gifts for birthdays and holidays.

• Have them explore student discount options available to them.

• Tell them to be wary of credit card promotions on campus, as they typically come with high-interest costs if not used smartly.

INSTRUCTIONS: Lightly oil the bottom of a large dutch oven, to prevent the nachos from sticking.

French twist SANGRIA A Spanish classic with a French twist makes for a refreshing, sophisticated cocktail. It’s easy to prepare, but don’t wait until the last minute.

INGREDIENTS (FOR 10-12 PEOPLE) • 750 ml red wine • 150 ml port • 150 ml Grand Marnier or Cointreau • 100 ml brandy • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 tbsp ground ginger • 4 cups fruit — whole, diced or sliced (pineapple, strawberries, oranges, kiwis, etc.)

PREPARATION 1. In large bowl, pour red wine, port, co­g nac and Grand Marnier over two cups of fruit. Let marinate in fridge for two to three hours.

2. Strain mixture and discard macerated fruit. In large ser­ving bowl, add re­ m aining fruit, cinnamon and ginger to mixture.

3. Mix well and serve over ice.

For the first layer, evenly spread 1/3 of the chips into the dutch oven, topped with 1/4 can El Pato, 1/4 can black beans, 1/4 cup cheese, and a handful of avocado, green onions, and cilantro. Repeat for the second layer.

For the third and final layer, use the remaining 1/3 portion of chips, 1/2 can El Pato, 1/2 can black beans, 1/2 cup cheese, and the remaining avocado, onion, and cilantro.

Cover the dutch oven and place on a metal grill over your campfire for about 10 minutes, until the cheese has melted.

Serve with the lime wedges.

NOTE: While a cast iron Dutch oven is the preferred vessel for making nachos, it would also be possible to make a smaller portion in a cast iron skillet with a lid. The key is having some sort of lid to trap the steam inside to help melt the cheese and slightly soften the chips.

Don’t have a lid for your Dutch oven or cast iron skillet? A sheet of aluminum foil over the top should do the trick, or you could cover it with a large plate.

A Dutch Oven is the most versatile piece of camp cookware, opening up a whole new world of cooking options: you can cook stews, bake lasagna, braise chicken, and of course, make nachos!

Captain the Ship

It's come to my awareness that while yes, I am a professional and a certified meditation teacher, and yes; I teach mindfulness to kids and have many certifications... that I am still only just a student of life and I have a long ways to go, especially with my 10 year old.

Lately, things have been tense at home. Many changes both great and challenging have been occurring and it's tough to manage as a kid (or adult, to be honest!). We've got all of the support measures and professionals in place that I can think of; plus we have a loving home, a willingness to openly and honestly communicate, fun, plenty of food, a roof, a car, pets, amenities of all kinds and the important life necessities that every kid should have.

Yet things are still tense... We have been having a rough go. Our boat has holes. Sometimes we feel like we are sinking and both for different reasons.

Can you relate as a parent?

I was chatting with some Baseball mamas the other day, and thank goodness they shared that they felt the same. They swear, yell and have a hard time keeping their cool!! My soul exploded - I thought I was all alone and turns out I am not. Neither are you.

Anxiety is present, and boy is it ever. This Mama is trying to remain mindful - but some days all I can do is just keep us both alive, while still trying to captain the ship as a single parent and professional. There are times when I feel that I just can't navigate through the storms no matter how much professional training I have. I swear and yell too. Some captain, right?

There are moments, and sometimes days where I feel like despite all of my knowledge and awareness, I am drowning in the ocean of parenthood and there is no life preserver ring to be seen.

Waves of challenges sometimes seem so high that surrendering to the power just feels like the easiest and best choice (while it's not, and we all know this).

Without a doubt, there are also situations

where I parent like a victorious warrior.

I am running a tight ship, and my boat is sailing smoothly. The sun shines, birds chirp, and I feel connected to my child, while still rocking the rest of my life too. Anxiety is low, peace has arrived and the waves are small and insignificant.

The Mamapalooza event in May was an exciting & memorable day! We met so many amazing supporters. The next event is Nov. 9th: 'Baby + Kids Handmade Market', Mark your calendars!

What I want to be clear on to all who continue to support and read my articles is that by no means, am I perfect, and by no means am I always 100% mindful.

It's okay if you're not either. We can only do so much, we can only give so much and we can only, truly support our children properly when we first, support ourselves.

I wonder what life would look like for you and your family if you (and I) committed to changing the way we captain our ships?

What if every day for 21 days, you wrote in a journal or notebook, or on your smartphone or napkin the following questions and answers to them: 1. What can I do right now, to stay in the positive flow of life?

2. In what ways am I reacting in the same old ways/ bad habits - and do I want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future?

3. How am I supporting myself today, or how did I support myself today?

4. How can I help and manage my family through some of these tidal waves? What strategies can I use?

The Captain commands the ship - and it's time to take command.

How to Keep Your Mind Sharp

Raspberry and Sweet Tea Sangria

Activities to keep the mind sharp and brain nourished: 1. Exercise: Mind and body are interconnected. Regular exercise goes a long way to keeping the brain healthy - what benefits the body will benefit the brain.

2. Read a Book: When you read, not only do you absorb the information from the book, but the act of reading itself builds connections within the brain reading is beneficial on many levels.

3. Eat Right: An all-around healthy diet may be the best nutritional strategy for keeping the brain sharp.

But let's not forget red wine has also been linked to a healthy brain!

4. Maintain Good Posture: An upright, not slouched posture improves circulation and blood flow to the brain.

5. Sleep Well: A good night’s sleep is vitally important to a healthy mind, especially memory. If necessary, take naps.

6. Paint, Draw or Doodle: An excellent workout for the brain? Draw a picture, paint or a simple doodle.

7. Listen to Music: Music affects the brain profoundly and has been linked to improved cognition and memory functioning.

8. Write: Writing improves working memory and your ability to communicate. It matters not whether it’s an email to family, a private journal or a novel.

INGREDIENTS (Makes 8 or more servings) • 6 cups white or green tea (sweetened to taste) • 1 bottle white wine (750 ml) • 2 cups fresh raspberries • Mint leaves PREPARATION 1. In a large pitcher, mix the cooled tea with the wine.

2. Carefully add the raspberries.

3. Let the mixture sit in the fridge for at least 8 hours or overnight.

4. Garnish with mint leaves and serve cold with ice cubes.

And there you have it — your new summer staple for those days by the pool!

If you’re the sort of camper who backpacks for a week, carrying minimal gear, and getting back to nature, try making your coffee the cowboy way. It’s one of the simplest ways to brew when your resources are limited. You’ll just need to get yourself a kettle that can be placed over the campfire or whatever your heat source will be.

To make Cowboy Coffee, first, fill your kettle with water and bring to a boil. Next, remove your kettle from the heat source, and let it cool enough to stop boiling.

Thirty seconds should be plenty of cooling time. Stir in two tablespoons of coffee grounds per serving. You should hear a sizzle when the grounds hit the hot water.

You may even see a little foam.

Let your coffee rest for two minutes. Stir it up again, then rest for two more minutes. Once the grounds settle to the bottom, pour your coffee in a mug slowly to avoid as much grit getting to your cup as possible.

SAGITTARIUS You’re going to have some trouble controlling your spending when you find yourself in a shop you love. It would be wise to become more spiritual and less material in your outlook.

CAPRICORN You’ll accomplish a feat that will make you proud. If you’re single, expect to encounter your soul mate, or at least to start talking about the future with an intriguing new partner.

Where is spring? It's been too cold and damp to move outside to the patio! The gardens are wet and plants are staying in the ground--our poor farmers are finding the days few and far between when they are able to work and plant the fields. Will we just have summer this year?

JUNE brings FATHER'S DAY--not a public holiday but always celebrated the third Sunday of the month--this time we show our appreciation for and honour all fathers/father figures. It is a day for cards, chocolates, dining out or attending DAD's favourite game--it's about what your father likes to do best and treat him like a king--a day to get his slippers after a breakfast tray in his favourite spot. It's about memories to be made for the men in our lives.

JULY 1st brings CANADA DAY, a celebration of the signing of the British North America Act in 1867. It is the day of red and white; a day to show patriotism for your country; a day to celebrate with balloons, streamers and fireworks displays. It was known as DOMINION DAY originally and changed to the present day name with the passing of the CANADA ACT in 1982. This year CANADA will celebrate 152 years young.

Our farm picture from MAY issue is of the DALGLIESH family at the corner of TOWNSHIP ROAD 12 & COUNTY ROAD 22. The farm of 100 acres was deeded by the CROWN to Charles DALGLIESH and his wife, Nancy LITTLE in February 1859. According to the 1851 Census Charles and Nancy were already living there with their family of 10 children--their two eldest children, Andrew & Margaret, having been born in North Dumfries Township before moving to the Chesterfield area circa 1838. Charles died in 1885 and Nancy died in 1901. Their son Charles (picture attached) and his wife Rebecca McFarland lived there with their children, Jean Ross, John, Margaret Elizabeth, William Johnson, and Agnes who were born at the farm in the late 1800`s. Nancy lived with her son and family until her death. The picture of the house was taken early 1900`s and no persons have been identified. Charles, Nancy and several of their children & grandchildren are buried in the CHESTERFIELD CEMETERY. Nancy known as Nanny was a sister to Effie Bell, & Elizabeth Scott Murray.

A bit of history is the picture of the vision of PLATTSVILLE from the 1876 HISTORICAL ATLAS of Oxford County--it appears the Nith River was called Smith Creek and many more streets and bridges over the creek were never built. Presently the town is expanding and many new houses are being built to the east of the original town. Two farms are now subdivisions with new streets --look for some more town history in the next addition.

We hope you have checked your hiding spots and found us some 50`s & 60`s treasures for our display. It will soon be time for our grand opening on June 15th for the 2019 display. We hope to see you again this year for some memories of days gone by.
