A note from the Editor...

Without a doubt Fall is my favourite time of year, I love the changing of the seasons. I love all the radiant colours of the leaves turning, the crisp autumn air, gathering with family & friends for a Thanksgiving feast , and of course the Fall flavours (welcome back Pumpkin Spice ever ything!).

As the weather cools down, I can’t help but feel it signifies a fresh start . The back to school routine begins and days get shorter, we really start to appreciate our time together at the end of a busy day. As a gateway to cozy winter nights and comfort food, the season is the perfect excuse to curl up with a blanket , a book and a cup of tea.

I f you enjoy the thrill of a good scare, then don’t miss our Spooky Events on page 7! Halloween is such a fun time, unlocking a child’s imagination to explore alternate identities, something that arguably does not get enough exercise anymore in these times of electronic devices. However, Halloween can be tricky if you have a child with food allergies or sensitivities – check out The Teal Pumpkin Project on page 4 for alternate ways to enjoy the festivities without the candy.

The Teal Pumpkin Project: Halloween Treats for Children with Food Allergies or Sensitivities

Halloween is fast approaching, and many households are preparing for the arrival of many ghouls, princesses, and superheroes by purchasing some tasty treats.

However, not all children are able to have the variety that are often offered when trick-or-treating. This notion is how the “Teal Pumpkin Project” began.

Food items that you may be able to provide for some trick-or-treaters with food allergies/sensitivities (but possibly not all) may include some of the below ideas:

The Teal Pumpkin Project involves placing a teal pumpkin on your porch to let other families know that you have safe alternatives for children with food allergies/ sensitivities. Families who participate in this project may offer the “typical” Halloween treats, but will additionally have a separate bowl of alternative treats for those with food allergies/sensitivities.

By providing alternatives, it gives all children an equal chance to participate in Halloween. This project also shines light on the issues of food allergies/sensitivities, and other conditions such as diabetes. Food allergies/ sensitivities are vast and can include many different food items including: - Gluten - Dairy - Chocolate - Egg - Nuts - Seeds - Sugar - Red Food Colouring - Yellow Food Colouring These food items can be found in many typical products, including Halloween candy. It can be challenging to find food items that avoid all of these particular foods. Below are some suggestions of different options that you might choose to provide as an alternative if you are participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project.

Gum (avoid coloured gums to give options that are void of dyes and food colouring) Juice (depending on the brand or type it may contain food colouring) Lara Bars (these may contain nuts) Plain Chips (avoid flavoured chips as it may contain hidden forms of milk i.e. whey) Gummy Candies (these are not always void of gluten, dairy, eggs, or food colouring) Coconut Water (though it is debatable how many children would be pleased with this option)

The Teal Pumpkin Project helps children feel included, despite their medical situation. I would encourage all households to attempt to provide alternatives that may be safe for all youngsters. However, the Teal Pumpkin Project may not be economical for all households, so do not feel obligated if you cannot participate as the generosity that Halloween portrays is in its-self a feat to be recognized.

On Wednesday October 31, we will be offering just some of these options for the local Trick–or–Treaters.

So please stop by and see what options might exist for those with food allergies/sensitivities!

Your Vote is your Voice, Let your voice be heard!

John Mailloux, Mayoral Candidate John Mailloux wants to give you a choice when selecting your next Mayor. John believes residents should judge politicians based on what they have accomplished – not what they promise.

Last year John let his voice be heard when it came time to stand up and save the Bright fire station, fighting passionately against the motion to close the station. He feels important issues in the Township have been overlooked, such as the Union Gas compressor station in Bright, noting with nearly 2 billion worth of upgrades it needs to be reassessed and taxed properly, “if I spent 2 billion on my place, I think they’d raise my taxes”. Union Gas should be treated equally, helping fill reserves to a point taxes could be lowered or remain the same.

These are just a couple of examples of John’s commitment to the people, and his passion to make a positive impact. John deeply cares about the community and wants to look out for families & seniors, focusing on many community goals; such as sustainable development, infrastructure improvements, affordable housing & programs, to name a few. John will work for the people, take action, and make sure our community voice is heard loud & clear.

Randy has been a resident of Blandford-Blenheim for 30 years. In 2014 he ran for Councillor and was elected to represent the residents of his community. Randy’s five years as a business owner, and five years prior as a charity trustee, have given him a key understanding of managing finances, projects and people, which is so vital for this role.

Randy’s focus presses on in the same direction – SAFETY, RESPONSIBILITY and GROWTH. Residents deserve a council that is mindful of all aspects of the safety of residents, manages tax-payer dollars with knowledge and respect to the hard-working residents, and promotes modest growth to help keep taxes manageable and develop business growth.

Randy considers it a privilege to be entrusted with a mandate from the voters. There is more work to be done and his knowledge of the issues on the table, along with his positive working relationship with township staff, enable a seamless continuation of working on the issues that matter to you.

Being that I am a life long resident of Blandford Blenheim, it is my life’s work is to get involved anywhere and any way I can. I have volunteered in many ways including Drumbo Lions, Drumbo Minor Ball, Princeton Minor Ball, and Plattsville Minor Hockey. I have been on the Blandford Blenheim fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and of recent I have co-lead the development of the Blandford Blenheim Food bank. My dedication to this township did not begin 8 years ago as I entered politics as a councillor. My dedication began the minute I Knew we had to take care of our communities. 8 years ago I decided it was the right time to take the next step in caring for the township. I entered the election as a candidate for councillor, with the intention of running for 2 terms, and voter permitting, then run for the office of Mayor. This is where I find myself right now.

Going forward it is my intention to continue to care for our communities in Blandford Blenheim. The past years have shown how the dedicated service groups across the township can collaborate with the township to create functional spaces, multi-service sports pads, a splash pad and so much more. These projects make our township a wonderful place to raise families in. The after-school programs are becoming very popular and very successful in giving children avenues for socialization, and we hope to expand those programs to include activities for our seniors. There is much to do to schedule infrastructure improvements and maintain and address some much needed roads work. I am fiscally responsible in handling every tax dollar and I will establish a plan to lessen the impact these improvements will cost. I have been very vocal in ensuring the taxes in Blandford Blenheim remain the lowest across Oxford County, without forfeiting any services, and if I am the successful candidate for Mayor I will continue to be a strong advocate for our township, and an even stronger voice at the County level.

Epidemiology: Up to 30% of the general population of Canadians will develop herps zoster “shingles” at some time of their lives. It is estimated that about 130,000 new cases of Shingles are diagnosed on an annual basis, along with 17,000 cases of postherpetic neuralgia.

Signs and symptoms: Herps Zoster infection warning symptoms may include a headache, photophobia, pain, and malaise. If those symptoms of prodrome is recognised the patient should be referred to a physician as soon as possible.

Herps Zoster dermatological symptoms include a localised rash in a region served by a single spinal nerve.

The pain associated with the infection have been described as burning, itching, shooting, or throbbing in nature, the pain usually disappears with the rash but may persist for several weeks, months, or years in some cases.

When can the infection can be transmitted?

The rash progresses most commonly in the first 4 days of infection accompanied by pain, itching, and/or tingling, in varying stages over three to five days. This is the period when virus can be passed to other individuals through direct contact with the fluid from the vesicles and pustules or indirectly through articles that are freshly soiled by discharges from vesicles or mucous membranes of infected individuals.

A Peach fit for a King !

submitted by Heather Kring One of my favourite recipes is handed-down to me by my very meticulous ‘Oma’ (Grand-mother in German). I remember it being beautiful, soft, flaky, and just sweet enough. As I grew into a mother and baker, I craved the textures and flavours from this masterpiece pie and practice, repeatedly. Somehow, it never quite tastes the same as my Oma’s, when it’s made with her love, but I hope my daughter gets the same warm feeling I do when I make it for her. When I was pregnant with her I CRAVED peaches. I would stop by the road-side stands on the way home from work and would eat the summer sun-warmed peaches, one after the other until the basket was done. I would always exclaim, “How many peaches is too many peaches to eat at once?” The answer is it’s never too many, especially when they’re baked in a pie!

Directions Ingredients 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9 ½ cup butter inch springform pan. ¼ cup white sugar 2.

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.

1 egg 3.

In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract together (hand mixed or hand mixer is best).

1 cup flour ½ tsp baking powder 4. Beat egg and add to wet mixture. Add vanilla. ¼ tsp salt 5. Fold wet ingredients into dry ingredients.

6 sliced and pitted peaches 6. Using hands cover bottom and sides of pan.

7. Arrange sliced peaches around the center in a Topping spoke (circle pattern).

3 tsp white sugar 8. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar topping mixture.

1 tsp cinnamon 9. Bake 35-40 minutes or until golden brown on top.

Curling

It’s for everyone!

Here’s some important information for you if you’re new to the area or simply out of the loop - Plattsville has its very own curling club. This warm and welcoming two-sheet curling club is located at 68 Mill St. and although it’s attached to the arena, it is an independent institution of winter fun! If you are interested in giving this popular sport a try, come out to the open house/clinic on Sunday, October 21st between 1:00-3:00 pm. It’s free to everyone with no-strings attached but once you’ve played once, you’ll be hooked for life.

Plattsville Curling has five leagues through the week. The Juniors take to the ice on Monday nights. The women’s league curls on Wednesday nights. There are two men’s leagues playing on Tuesday and Thursday nights with the Thursday group being the more competitive night. Friday nights are for the mixed league, where socializing and enjoying tasty snacks after the night’s game is what curling is all about. We are also investigating the start-up of a daytime league to accommodate retirees and others who’d prefer to curl during the day. Our typical curling season runs from the end of October to March for approximately 22 weeks. You can find out more information by visiting our website at: http://www.plattsvillecurling.ca/ If you’re interested but don’t want to make the full season commitment, you can sign up for any of our bonspiels (one day tournaments) that take place periodically from January to March. The club can also be rented for private functions at a nominal rate; making use of either the ice or just the club house space. Check the website for rental rates and contact information.

OVERALL HEALTH: The physical, mental and social benefits from staying active and participating in a sport like curling are profound. Instilling good lifestyle habits at a young age can result in a healthier, happier and more fulfilled life for years to come. We’re a safe, family-based recreational activity. And the best part is, it makes the long winter days fly by.

PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT: Curling enhances balance, strength and hand-eye coordination. It’s an accessible and adaptable sport that can grow with every athlete at every level of the game. While you don’t need to be in terrific shape to be a good curler, the sport can give you a great workout. Sweeping is an excellent cardiovascular activity; and throwing the stone can help to improve your balance and hand-eye co-ordination. And if your knees are wonky and your back’s a little slack, curling can be accommodated to your needs by throwing with a stick, shuffle-board style.

Here are some excellent reasons why you should consider taking up the sport this year: CURLING IS INEXPENSIVE: Unlike many organized sports in Canada, curling is relatively inexpensive. Adult full-year memberships range from $190 to $320 depending on how many nights you’d like to play (you can take advantage of the October 15th early bird deadline and save $25). Students can curl for $110 and the Juniors program gives kids between the ages of 10 and 14 lots of fun for only $35. Plus, curling doesn’t require much equipment. To begin, all you need is a pair of rubber-soled shoes and loose-fitting pants.

THE PLATTSVILLE & DISTRICT HERITAGE SOCIETY Our "Open The Door To Christmas" display is closed and THE PLATTSVILLE & DISTRICT HERITAGE SOCIETY we would like to thank everyone who helped make this adventure a success - those who brought their Christmas treasures to display; those who spent a hour or more helping set up or take down; those in our community who came and spent a few minutes or a few hours checking out the extraordinary Christmas decorations and trees; those who sat on Santa's knee or had a picture taken; those who decorated gingerbread cookies; or those who made a donation at the door- we are forever grateful.

Next year's display is in the planning stages so stay tuned for what we can use from your garage, attic or closets. Our forty page photobook for this year will be out shortly at a cost of $25.00 - a perfect gift for the coming season. Please be reminded that we do have photobooks for all our displays available as well as Gow Harvey's "BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE" and Jenny Harvey's "ONCE UPON A TIME IN WASHINGTON".

Every Farm has a Story...

Have we all noticed the changing countryside--subdivisions and new homes in Bright, Plattsville and Washington and farm changes. Barns are being demolished and sometimes replaced by a new milking barn or the land is now used for cash crops. In my day on the farm we had chickens, pigs and milking cattle giving way to beef cattle as I got older. We grew hay, wheat and oats and the largest of gardens.

Everyone helped whether in the barn or house. Vegetables and fruit were canned or froze for winter use. Everyday we had to clean the eggs and create--how boring. Sometimes we were even in the fields lifting bales or the easy job of driving the tractor. It was a task to get a few minutes to watch our first TV bought in 1956 other than Saturday night hockey from MAPLE LEAF GARDENS in the winter brought in by "rabbit ears".

Every farm has a story and pictures. The history of one of the many dear to my heart is where my Mother grew up-a little stream to the west, a tree lined lane, a house and garden once secured by a wire fence, a barn of animals and stored crops and in the family name for more than a hundred years. It was deeded by THE CROWN in October 1858 to John Risk-100 acres on the 14th line of Blandford James & Matties House--1944 Township in Oxford County. It was bought by Thomas Currah in March 1906 for his oldest son, John who was married in 1907 but sadly he only lived for another two years dying at 25 in 1909 with cancer.

James, the second son was the next custodian bringing his wife Martha "Mattie" in 1912 where their sons Stuart and Don were born. In 1917 Jim got wandering feet and decided he wanted to go west to homestead - my grandmother must have been very adventurous to take two young boys and go west and have another son, Russell and daughter, Sadie Jean. The third son of Thomas, Norman bought the farm and here another family worked the land and their son, Thomas Henry was born.

When Grandpa & Grandma came back from the west in the fall of 1925 more changes, another son, Ross was born and the farm was bought back from Norman and here it would stay in this brother's family for another 92 years or two generations.

Oh the stories, if only whispers could be heard from the walls--my grandmother's piano playing before bed; the Sunday family gatherings to a table laden with homemade dinner and dessert; Granny Currah's summer visits to help houseclean and wallpaper a room or two; and children swimming & fishing in the creek.

James & Matties Farm--1980's

In September 1838 it was the first farm in the area to have hydro in the house and in the barn for the Delco milking machine--how easy tasks would have been with this improvement. The farm was sold in September of 2017 and now another family will continue the story with pictures and make their changes.
