A note from the Editor...

November is here, that frosty month that leads into the big event! Yes I’m referring to Christmas ‘the most wonderful time of the year’. This issue is filled with local events preparing us for the festive season… parades, marketplaces, ladies nights, and of course the adorable artisan markets popping up all over the community.

When we support these fabulous local shops & businesses we not only have an opportunity to improve our local economy, but we make an entrepreneur’s dream a reality.

This year I plan to purchase 100% of my Christmas treasures & gifts from many of our local businesses. There are so many interesting and unique gift ideas that could never be found in a big box store. Take a stroll, literally or virtually, through your small town. From the mom & pop shops, the local beauty salons, to antiques, coffee shops, yoga studios and beyond, small business contribute to a community’s identity – keep ours alive & thriving!

Chilly weather & slick roads aren’t the only thing November brings… I also think of comfort dishes, hot chocolate and fires in the fireplace, and breaking out the sweaters that we have forgotten how much we love during the warmer months. The undesirable weather is the perfect excuse to stay inside and create a new dish or just binge on your favourite Netflix series.

November is also that time of year when thoughts turn to sombre reminders of long ago sacrifices.

Millions of men & women gave their lives on behalf of their country. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month please pause in memory of those that sacrificed their lives. It is important that we, as Canadians, remember the deeds and sacrifices of our fallen and those who have served and continue to serve our country… and that we promise to never forget.

Lions Club International is the largest service club in the world. They assist hundreds of thousands of people every year. It takes many volunteers who care about others to accomplish this. We are always looking for new members who want to join the Plattsville Lions club to support our community with growth and development.

We meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month and welcome new faces with new ideas and contributions.

A program that is growing rapidly is the Lions youth program called “Leo” which I am currently chairing for this year. This program gives the Youth members leadership, experience and opportunity to grow, learn and give back.

These are qualities that will help them be strong successful adults in the future and helps us prepare for the inevitable departure of Lions as they age.

Filling Your Cup: 5 Strategies to “Put Yourself First” Mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, care-givers, go-getters, and frankly anyone with various responsibilities in their life can struggle with taking time for self – care, and putting themselves first. We often struggle with the phrase “putting yourself first” due to it suggesting selfishness.

Putting yourself first does not have to involve “selfish” deeds, but requires ranking yourself a bit higher on your priority list. Often, I hear individuals say “there is just no time for me” when the deadlines at work, getting the kids to extra curriculars, making supper, and keeping a tidy home require so much time. My typical response to this is, “you cannot pour from an empty cup”. If you do not take the time for self-care now, you are going to find it harder and harder to feed into each area of your life and find balance amongst them. That does not mean it automatically becomes easy to make time for self-care. Often, it is hard to prioritize the time. Self-care does not have to be time-consuming or expensive. It really requires an intention to put your needs first for a minimum of 5-10 minutes per day. Choosing to incorporate some of the below strategies is a great way to help prioritize yourself first.

Putting ‘exercise’ in your calendar, will help you follow-through with it, as there is a concrete mindset about it, and you are less likely to avoid taking this time for you. Set aside time at least weekly for selfcare – whether it is an acupuncture appointment, massage appointment, yoga class, or even just an “appointment” for a bath or walk.

Self-Care Strategies: 1. Ask for Help: This suggestion may seem simple, but is often one of the most difficult to apply. It is okay to ask and seek help. This could mean seeking the care of a health care professional or asking a spouse or a friend for help with a responsibility. Seeking help is not weakness, its human.

2. Opt for Convenience: Eating healthy is important, but with so many deadlines it can be hard to prioritize the preparation it takes for healthy choices.

Convenience can look like purchasing a pre-cut vegetable tray to use for quick grab-and-go lunch or snack options, or a pre-washed salad. If you can spend the extra money for convenience, you will increase your “me” time and help put your health as a priority.

3. Expect Less and Forgive Easy: Expecting less and forgiving easily involves making realistic and reasonable compromises. For example, asking your child to put away their laundry will mean the drawer is messier. That messy drawer (which you can close and not look at) will allow for 5 minutes of “me” time. You must forgive yourself for imperfections, and recognize that it’s okay to fall short in some areas. Receiving 90% on any test is still amazing! Recognize that it is okay to have limitations, to not be perfect, to be human, and to just say “No”.

By saying “No” to one area, you are allowing the opportunity to say “Yes” to another area.

The Movember Foundation was founded in 2003, and started with 30 moustaches… it has since grown to an astounding 5 million. The foundation focuses on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health & suicide prevention.

4. Let the Small Stuff Go: Choose your battles wisely! You must recognize what is worth the battle and what is worth letting go. By recognizing what is important to address, you can more easily let go of the things that in the long run, really do not matter. Accept that some things are out of your control, and you cannot change. If you cannot control it or change it, don’t battle it.

Winter Myths you shouldn't believe

Winter is on the way... Do you know how to stay toasty?

Myth: Dressing warmly avoids colds, viruses, and flu.

Not entirely correct. If you haven't been exposed to a virus, cold weather won't make any difference. There are over 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. However, your odds of avoiding a cold get better if you bundle up and stay warm - warmer bodies appear to help prevent a cold virus from spreading, and the virus dies more quickly with a healthy core body temperature.

The Priest said "Luigi, you are an inspiration to all husbands here today. Please tell the audience what you plan for your wife for your 50th anniversary."

Myth: You lose body heat through your head.

You'll lose body heat from any part of your body that is exposed - but it's a good idea to wear a hat. The amount of heat you can lose through your head depends on a number of factors, including how thick your hair is and how much energy you use in the cold. Exception: children lose proportionally more heat through their heads as their head surface is much greater than their body surface. Children need those hoods and hats!

Myth: Men and women feel cold at the same temperature.

Ever notice that women's hands and feet tend to get colder before men's? It's because the external temperature at which men’s and women's bodies begin conserving heat — called the set point temperature — varies by about 3°. When surrounding temperatures drop to a certain point, your body will conserve heat by shutting off the blood flow to the hands and feet, making them feel chilled. For women, that temperature is about 70°, while men can hold steady until about 67° or 68°.

Myth: Dress in layers to stay warm.

It's true that dressing in layers allows people to adjust for different levels of activity. But one warm garment that is well-made will do just as well to keep away the winter chills.

Myth: Drinking alcohol will keep you warm.

Drinking alcohol may make you feel warm because it causes blood to rush to your skin's surface. But it actually causes your blood vessels to widen and makes you lose heat faster. Drinking alcohol in the cold also decreases the shivering process, which produces extra body heat.

Upon arriving, the long brick lane way sets the stage for the experience, the knowledgeable & friendly staff explained it’s a similar entrance to world known Glenlivet Distillery in Scotland. The open concept renovated barn is gorgeous - a rustic interior with a modern cocktail bar, I feel like a cool hipster just being here. Recently the distillery added food to their spirits menu, which proved to be a brilliant idea as the wood-fired pizza was amazing.

And let’s talk about the gin... smooth & delicious! This description does not give the spirit the respect it deserves, as I am no gin connoisseur I do know this was one beautiful cocktail. Offering samples & a quick lesson on how they distill - the passion and creativity of those running the operation and making the product can be felt and tasted. And who is running the operation…

Stress-Busting tips for mama's

I don’t know about you, but sometimes… wait... let’s be real here – OFTEN times, I feel stressed out being a Mama.

I stress about the safety of my kiddo at school or at activities, I worry about his lunches, his clean clothes, his pile of dirty clothes, his five-hundred pairs of socks that have no matches, and I worry about his future too. Oh – and did I mention that I stress out about what to cook for dinner every night?!

Sound a little familiar?

Any of these making you nod? You’ve probably got your own list going and it’s a non-stop flight to stress-ville! Just thinking about the pile of ‘stuff’ we have to accomplish as Mom’s is stressful – let alone the actual ‘doing’ of said ‘stuff’!

We are wonderful, amazing, miraculous human beings who can conquer and slay the day at work, but when we get home, we’re just tired and we need to NOT stress out. Am I right Mama?

Sometimes our capes need to stay in the closet, and we need to just breathe.

One thing I am not is someone who preaches but does not practice. I preach – BUT I practice!

One thing I am? A Mama (solo) with a single income, who can’t simply do it all.

Period.

Mama,

You got this!

So what do I DO? How do I try to find some resemblance of peace every day so that I can be the best human and Mama possible for my child?

It starts with one choice. One step. One thing.

Remember: 1.

Stress is something we perceive, based on a set of values we associate or link to a certain act or situation.

Count up the 5’s = ___________________ These are the things you need to keep a close watch on. These are stress points that are building and causing you to worry and most likely angry or frustrated.

What is one thing for each individual “5” that you can do or try to help lessen stress? Alleviate the level of anxiety.

Ask for help. Talk to me. (email below) Count up the 10’s = _________________ These are the points you are going to deal with first. Whatever they may be. You have so many options here.

Knowing is half the battle Mama.

1. Write down positive, healthy solutions to help you manage and thrive 2. Ask for help. Write a list of people you know you can count on, call, text, or ask for help. This could include a Facebook community group page.

3. Speak to a councillor or therapist. We are blessed to have many in our region.

4. Write it out, feel it out, meditate and breathe. Feeling more calm and clear gives you better and focused perspective for moving forward – even if it’s just baby steps.

2. Try meditation. Even if you try for one minute daily to begin – and increase with time. It is like a break for your brain and scientifically proven to improve focus, clarity and decision making while decreasing stress, anxiety and depression – just to name a few benefits!

3. Nature. Take walks in nature. With your kiddos or alone. Get out in nature. Breathe deeply. Walk slowly and mindfully. Just be present.

With the average full-time Canadian undergraduate student paying annual tuition fees of nearly $6,000, post-secondary education can be an overwhelming expense.1 Registered education savings plans (RESPs) are a great way to make this expense more manageable.

RESP contributions should always be weighed against one’s current financial priorities as well as any longterm planning. It’s also important to stay on track to achieving your retirement savings goals.

How do I withdraw money?

Once your child is enrolled at a post-secondary instiWhy invest? tution, you can begin withdrawing RESP money. The An RESP is a savings vehicle designed to help you save process is simple: just provide proof the child is enrolled for your child’s post-secondary education. When to start?

As we all know, children grow up quickly. That’s why it’s important to start saving for school as early as possible.

Don’t worry if you can’t contribute anywhere close to $2,500 a year; consistency is key, so make sure you’re contributing on a regular schedule, even if it’s $10 or $20 a week. Setting up automatic withdrawals through your financial security advisor and investment representative can help keep you on track with your savings goals.

Keep in mind that you have limited time to take advantage of the CESG. You can’t collect more than $1,000 in any given year and the grant stops after the child turns 20 / 

Not all RESP providers have the same requirements for withdrawals, so it’s best to contact your financial institution several weeks before you need the money and ask about their specific policies. It’s also important to note that, if you invest in guaranteed investments or bonds within the RESP, you’ll want them to mature a few weeks before you plan to withdraw the funds.

And remember, if a child’s post-secondary education plans change, there are several options to use those savings for education or other needs.

While saving for a post-secondary education may seem overwhelming, you’ll be surprised at how much you can save if you contribute regularly to an RESP. And free money from the government can be very helpful.

There are two types of withdrawals from an RESP: post-secondary education payments (otherwise known as capital withdrawals) and educational assistance payments (or EAPs).

The difference between these two withdrawals is tax-related; post-secondary education payments are taken from the contributions you’ve made with your after-tax income, so there’s no additional tax owed upon withdrawal. EAPs are taken from the growth of the RESP, so they’re taxed in your child’s hands. However, if they’re claiming tuition and education tax credits, and have a low income, they should pay little to no tax.

When you are ready to use RESP funds, you can specify which type of withdrawal you want to make. It usually makes sense to start by withdrawing EAPs; that way, if the child ends up completing their education before the RESP account is empty, most of the remaining money can be withdrawn without taxes or penalties.

Spicy Butternut Squash Soup Submitted by Heather Kring Fall is my favourite time of the year. Not too hot, not too cold. Sweater, warm soup, hearty vegetables and yummy kitchen smells weather. I cook, but in fall I spend A LOT of time in the kitchen and this is one of my favourite soups to make. I find it is so versatile that it is my go-to for everything because I always have the ingredients on-hand and I can change it up with the to make it taste specific. Check out the options at the bottom and let me know how you like to make it!

Squash Soup Ingredients: Optional Ingredients: • 2 cloves of garlic (diced) • 1 pie pumpkin (or 32 oz can) • 1 yellow onion (diced) • ½ cup peanut butter • 2 cups of broth (chicken or vegetable) • 1 tbsp nutmeg • 1 butternut squash (cubed) • 2 tbsp cinnamon • 1 can coconut milk (15 oz) • 2 chicken breast • 2 tbsp curry powder • 2 medium red/yellow/orange • 2 tbsp ginger (grated or powder) peppers • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp pepper • Garnish with cilantro Directions 1. Add all ingredients into slowcooker.

2. Cook on high 3-4 hours (or low 6-8 hours) stirring at various intervals.

3. Try different variations of optional ingredients until it is up to your taste! **Can be made on stovetop (medium heat for 45 minutes). Please pre-cook the onions, garlic and chicken in a frying pan or oven (350F for 25-30 minutes until cooked through) if choosing this method.

Our students in Grades One to Eight participated again in the annual Terry Fox Run to raise money for cancer research. We had great weather as we ran along the paths by the river.

Our students ran at top speed as they tried to outrun the mosquitoes! It is always our privilege to participate and be a part of the cure!

We enjoyed an amazing Thanksgiving feast as we celebrated the end of our food drive to benefit the Blandford-Blenheim Food Bank. As a school, we collected 609 items for the food bank! Congratulations to our Grade 7/8 class who won our classroom challenge and brought in an amazing 31 items per student!!

It has been a really busy month as our school participated in the CAASO Cross Country meet in Fergus, started swimming lessons at the Wilmot Recreation Complex and had fun with Orange Day. All of our students had a great time as we spent the day at Hidden Acres Camp for a day of outdoor education. The students enjoyed outdoor cooking, games, crafts, archery, and canoeing! It was a warm and wonderful day to enjoy God’s creation!

THE PLATTSVILLE & DISTRICT HERITAGE SOCIETY First I must make two corrections from my Currah Farm History last month- 'I had to crate the eggs' not create, and 'in September 1938 it was the first farm in the area to have hydro'. As I typed 1838 I would very much doubt that there was nothing but wilderness and wild animals in the area--such a difference a hundred years make.

As this Remembrance Day approaches it is also significant in that it is one hundred years since the end of hostilities of World War I--they formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente. The First World War actually ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. Remembrance Day was called Armistice Day until 1931. It is sometimes informally known as "POPPY DAY" because the red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem due to the poem "IN FLANDERS FIELDS" written

by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. Poppies were worn for the first time at the 1921 anniversary ceremony and at first they were real. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I; their brilliant red colour become a symbol for blood spilled in the war. As a little girl it was one of the poems of many that we memorized along with the poppy we wore for our Remembrance Day service.

The First World War left close to ten million dead on the battlefields in Europe, with many additional civilians to die from starvation or direct attack, and millions of returning soldiers to succumb to their wounds in the years to follow. It was a time of great grief in the world as there was not a family that did not have a son or husband or relative or friend connected to the war--every year on November 11th, we take a moment to consider the impact and the sacrifice of past generations.
