my fantastic pet Hi! I’m Jonathan. My pet is a very interesting creature. His name is Charlie and he’s a chameleon. He lives in my bedroom in a big glass tank. Charlie is four years old and he is thirty centimetres long from his nose to the end of his tail. Chameleons have got amazing eyes. One eye can look forwards and one eye can look backwards. They can see two things at the same time! Amazing! They’ve got strange tongues, too. Charlie’s tongue is very, very long and the end of his tongue is sticky. Chameleons eat insects. When Charlie sees an insect, his tongue shoots out, he catches the insect and he eats it. Mmm! Delicious! What colour is my chameleon? Well, that’s a very good question. Most of the time he’s green. But Charlie is very clever. He can change colour! If he is angry, he becomes yellow. If he is scared, he becomes brown. Charlie isn’t a very friendly pet. You can’t play with him like you can with a dog or a cat. But he is a very interesting pet and I love him. I want to go to Africa and see chameleons in the wild. Some are huge (68 centimetres long) and some are tiny (3 centimetres long). They are different colours: green, blue, red, yellow, orange, grey, brown and black. Some have stripes and some have spots. I think they’re beautiful. What do you think? Would you like a chameleon for a pet? Or a snake like Sammy? Or a parrot like Mr Beak? Or no pet at all?

Part One

THE secret of the castle

This is Kris. He is eleven. He lives in London with his mum and his little sister. He likes computer games and watching TV. He is good at football and he plays in the school team. He is a normal eleven year old boy. But at night Kris has strange dreams. And he has one dream again and again. In his dream Kris is standing in front of an old wall. He can see something in the wall. What is it? Is it a face? Yes, a face. And he can hear something, too. What is it? It is the sound of animals: a lion, a bear, a monkey, a wolf. Yes, he can hear animals. But they are far away. Then he hears a girl’s voice. She whispers in his ear: “Help me. Please, help me.” Then he hears a man’s voice: “Go away! Go away!” The voice is angry. Kris is scared. Then – he wakes up. It is only a dream. Or is it? Sometimes in summer Kris goes to visit his Uncle Joe and his cousin, David. They live in Cardiff in Wales. David is the same age as Kris and he likes computer games and watching TV and playing football – just like Kris. If the weather is good, they go to the park every day and play football. The park is next to Cardiff Castle. 28

One day the boys are playing football in the park. It is a windy day. David kicks the ball hard and it flies up into the air and over a wall into the castle gardens. The two boys climb over the wall. Where is the ball? They walk through the trees. Kris sees the ball in the long grass. He runs and picks it up. But what is that on the ground next to the ball? It is a key. The key is old and dirty. Kris picks it up and looks at it. “Come on!” shouts David. Kris puts the key in his pocket, picks up the ball and the two boys run back to the park.

The wind blows through the trees and Kris hears a voice: “Help me. Please, help me.”

meet mr dog! If you want to know about dogs, talk to George Peterson. He knows everything about dogs. He writes about them in books and magazines, he trains dogs and now he has his own TV show. He is an expert – the expert’s expert – and everyone calls him “Mr Dog.”

– George, can you tell me about your TV show? Well, it’s called “Send for Mr Dog!” A lot of people have problems with their dogs and in the show I visit them at home and I try to solve their problems. – What sort of problems do people have with their dogs? Oh, they have lots of problems. Sometimes dogs hate other dogs and want to fight. Sometimes dogs hate people and want to bite them – that can be dangerous. Some dogs are very noisy; some are very fat; some are very, very naughty! – And can you help them? Oh, yes. Dogs are clever – sometimes they’re cleverer than their owners – and they learn quickly. I train the dogs and I train their owners, too! – Really? Oh, yes. That’s very important. I train the dog owner to be the boss in the house. – I want to get a dog. What advice can you give me? Well, choose the right dog for you. Let’s look at some pictures. How about this dog? It’s very beautiful but it’s big. And it’s difficult to train. How about this one? It’s smaller than the first one and it’s easier to train. – It’s lovely. Yes, that’s the dog for me. Excellent! And when you get your dog, remember! You’re the boss! – Of course! I’m the boss! Tell me about your dogs, George. How many have you got? I’ve got three: Carlo, Smudge and Lulu. Carlo’s the biggest and the oldest. (He’s thirteen.) Lulu is the smallest and the youngest. (She’s a puppy.) And then there’s Smudge in the middle. What can I say about Smudge? He’s not very clever but I think he’s the funniest dog in the world! Ah! Here’s Carlo. Hmm… What do you want, Carlo? A walk? Oh, all right… – Hmm…Who’s the boss in this house?

keypals Matt is at school. He is in the computer room. He is typing an e-mail to Jake McDonald. Jake is Matt’s keypal and he lives in America. A keypal is like a pen friend. If you have a pen friend, you write letters to him or her. If you have a keypal, you don’t write letters, you write e-mails.

All the children in Matt’s class have got keypals. Matt’s teacher, Miss Scott, has got a friend in America. He is also a teacher. The children in his class send e-mails to the children in Miss Scott’s class. And the children in Miss Scott’s class send e-mails back to them. Miss Scott says: “The children really enjoy reading and writing their e-mails.” Hannah says: “It’s interesting to learn about another country.” Emily says: “It’s a good way to make friends.” Simon says: “We learn a lot about computers. It’s brilliant!” att says: “My keypal, Jake McDonald, is great. M He lives in a really interesting place, too.”

Table Mountain Table Mountain is the huge mountain behind Cape Town. It is called Table Mountain because its top looks flat, just like the flat top of a table. It is 1,086 metres high and it is 3 kilometres long. The views from the top are fantastic. You can see the city of Cape Town below, the blue sea and white sandy beaches. You can climb the mountain. There are 350 paths up to the top. Some of these paths are easy and some are difficult. If you don’t know the mountain, it can be dangerous. It is better to take the Cableway. The trip takes only six minutes. Every year the Cableway carries 600,000 people to the top of the mountain. Many plants and animals live on the mountain. There are about 1,470 types of plants. Some of them grow only on Table Mountain; they do not grow anywhere else in the world. There are baboons and porcupines. There is also an animal called a ghost frog. It lives only on Table Mountain. anywhere else  ['enIwe@r'els] baboon  [b@'bu:n] cableway  ['keIblweI] carry  ['k{rI] climb  [klaIm] dangerous  ['deIndZ@r@s] difficult  ['dIfIk@lt] easy  ['i:zI] ghost frog  ['g@Ustfrɒg] grow  [gr@U]

A trip up the mountain On their second day in South Africa, Simon and Emily went to the top of Table Mountain with Grandma and Grandpa. They went on the Cableway. “Ooh! We’re so high!” said Emily. ”I’m scared.” “Don’t worry! It’s quite safe,” said Grandpa. At the top they looked at the wonderful view. “It’s fantastic!” said Emily. “Amazing!” said Simon. First they went for a walk. There were lots of beautiful flowers. Emily loved them but Simon only wanted to see baboons and porcupines. It was a hot day so they went to the restaurant and had a cold drink. Then they went to the souvenir shop. “Can we buy some postcards?” asked Emily. “Of course,” said Grandma. “And if you send postcards from here, they have the Table Mountain postmark on them.” They stayed at the top of the mountain for about an hour. Then they went on the Cableway again. “Ooh! We’re going so fast!” said Grandpa. “I’m scared!” “Don’t worry! It’s quite safe,” laughed Emily. And soon they were at the bottom of the mountain again.
